Redmond firefighters and police officers lined the back wall of the hall and a fire-department chaplain offered condolent words to those in attendance. Susie is survived by her father Jon and mother Veronica, as well as her two sisters, Jillian, 4, and Genevieve, 6 weeks.
“Susie’s bright light brought something significant to all of us,” family friend Thomas Mathiesen said at the gathering. Susie’s grandmother Nancy Dreher added, “You and your spirit will be with us every day — always.” [ more SUSIE page 7 ]

Art comes alive starting today at festival
The Redmond Arts Festival will take place today through Sunday at Redmond Town Center. Times will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and tomorrow and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The juried arts fair will feature more than 70 talented artists along Northeast 74th Street showcasing and selling their work. Food trucks stationed along 164th Avenue Northeast will offer culinary delights and main stage entertainment will feature local musicians and ethnic performances. There will be original fine art, sculpture and pottery, wearable art,
celebrating her life, as well. People filled the Happy Valley Grange in Redmond on Thursday morning to share stories about Susie and comfort the Redmond family and each other. Susie, 2, passed away on July 1 after being struck by a car in Redmond Town Center.

This weekend, Derby Days turns 75. To mark the occasion, Rachel Van Winkle, events and marketing administrator for the City of Redmond, said the annual summer event will have a more festive-than-usual birthday party theme. From a birthday cake-eating contest to a birthday-themed Grand Parade, she said the theme will be present throughout the festival.

For years, Stuart Hargreaves has participated in Group Health’s annual Seattle to Portland (STP) ride. The Redmond resident has done the ride a few times on his own, but last year, for the first time, his 12-yearold daughter Lili — who was 11 at the time — joined him. The two did
the 205-mile ride on a two-person tandem bicycle. “I liked it,” Lili said. She and her father were riding to raise money and awareness for cystic fibrosis (CF) research through the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF). This weekend, they will be joined by Lili’s younger sister, 11-year-old Amelia. Again, the Hargreaves family will be riding for the same cause,
which is near and dear to them as Lili was diagnosed with CF when she was 3 years old. Stuart said at that time, they had just moved up to Redmond from Portland. Lili was hospitalized for pneumonia and it was during this period that her doctor figured out what her symptoms — which mainly

Initially, Larsen said they identified three park sites where the building could possibly go: Conrad Olson Park (formerly Conrad Olson Farmstead), Arthur Johnson Park and Martin Park. He said they had consulted with a building-moving company to do an analysis. Larsen said they eliminated Conrad Olson Park immediately because the route to the park included a bridge that would not be able to handle weight of the building. Once it was determined that their potential relocation choices would be either Arthur Johnson Park or Martin Park, he said they then had to figure out the cost. There are two separate costs to relocating the Nokomis building. The first would be moving and stabilizing the building; the second cost would be making the building usable for the public. Larsen said the latter is always a challenge when it comes to older buildings. “The second cost is sig-
nificant,” he said. Larsen said the estimates to move the Nokomis building to Arthur Johnson Park would cost $193,440, with the second cost to make it usable being $386,880. For Martin Park, the costs are $228,384 and $524,160, respectively. Martin Park is more expensive because there are streams on the site and they would need to take setbacks and buffers into consideration. These costs would be on top of the city’s donation of the land, estimated at a value of $130,000. Larsen said the city is willing to accommodate the building if the Nokomis Club of Redmond can pay for the move. He added the city is giving them six months to raise the money. According to a press release issued by the city, a community fundraising effort, led by OneRedmond, will begin to raise the revenues to cover the moving costs. When asked for a comment, Alexa Munoz, president of the Nokomis Club of Redmond, said this matter is under appeal and until the hearings are concluded, they can make no comment.

Redmond Fire Department (RFD) units responded to a four-acre brush fire
and two structure blazes last weekend. All three non-injury fires are possibly fireworks related and are still under investigation, according to RFD Battalion Chief Doug Kammerzell. At approximately 6 p.m. on July 4, about four RFD crews of 20 firefighters began battling the four-acre blaze behind Emily Dickinson Elementary School on Union Hill. It took them about four hours to extinguish the blaze, and two firefighters stayed overnight
at the site and kept a hose line set in case there were any flareups, which didn’t occur. The two house fires occurred at about 7 a.m. on July 4 and at 4 a.m. on July 5 in the Amesbury neighborhood and Ames Lake area, respectively. The Amesbury fire started on the roof and the Ames Lake homeowner saw flames coming from under the house, said Kammerzell, who noted that both fires were doused soon after RFD crews arrived.

Weighing in on City of Redmond’s propositions 1 and 2
The City of Redmond’s desire for a 23 percent increase in its property tax rate goes counter to its and the proponents’ claims about how well the city is being run. These proponents of the 23 percent increase laud the city for its fiscal stewardship and its efficiency in providing city services. If city government is so well-run, why should it need such a huge increase in the tax rate? And this is in addition to the statutorily allowed compounded rate that has been levied consistently and regularly throughout the budget cycles. Also the city has an increase in its projected revenue stream of more than 10 percent over the previous budget. This revenue coming into the city should be sufficient to provide necessary services for a government that is being touted as well-run and financially responsible. Nor should residents be misled by the phantom costs alluded to by the proponents of the tax increase to homeowners. The actual increase in property tax will depend on the individual homeowner’s assessed value, not the imaginary figure cited by the advocates for a tax increase. For example, the median home value cited by Zillow.com is $593,600. At that value, the tax increase will be $207.76 and not the $174.50 cited by the proponents for the 23 percent increase. A NO vote on these two property tax increases is a vote for a government that is responsible to its citizens, and against the megalomaniacal desires of politicians.

I am writing to voice my support for Redmond’s propositions 1 and 2 on the Aug. 4 ballot. As a council member, I can tell you that we thoroughly reviewed the service needs of our community balanced with our ability to meet those needs. During the Budgeting by Priorities process last year, it was quite clear that the residents of Redmond highly valued the Public Safety and Clean and Green priorities. Not only did we hear this during meetings, our unofficial survey through the interactive budget game created by students at Digipen backed it up. And those priorities were funded in our budget, but there were more needs than resources available. So we followed the letter of the law and are asking our residents if they want to live in a city that barely keeps up with the rising costs of doing business by sacrificing services on the edge or one that has the resources to meet the needs of all of our residents. When we began our discussion of whether to place the levies on the ballot, we leaned on input from our residents in selecting the programs and projects. As elected officials, that’s the kind of feedback we need to deliver the services our community wants. We are also sensitive to the impacts our decisions have on residents and sought out programs and projects that enhanced the services we provided, or helped to fill a gap where the level of service was challenged due to limited revenues. It is easy to point out how revenue has grown in the past few years, but failing to acknowledge how Redmond weathered the recession and the impacts it had on our service is myopic. The city survived the downturn because we
were fiscally responsible and made hard decisions to reduce levels of service. Those decisions are being felt in many ways, such as limiting the number of neighborhood parks we can upgrade, limiting the hours of coverage at sports fields, timing road overlay projects to more closely align with when the roads will show significant wear and subsidizing aid cars throughout the city. While doing this, our region began to change and we were faced with new crime trends that require a significant investment of police investigation time. Our reaction is to partner with our residents, roll up our sleeves and get to work on keeping Redmond a great place to live, work, raise a family, play and learn. The proposed levies fill gaps created by economic forces that we couldn’t control, but we had to confront. The needs expressed by our residents are recognized in the proposals before us. Please join me and Vote Yes on propositions 1 and 2 on Aug. 4. Help keep Redmond a place that we can all be proud of for years to come.

I, too, would like to see a move away from carbon-based fuels to safer energy sources — but with a different, and much better focus that will increase the speed of this change. Remove the ultimate goal of the transferring of wealth (Marxism) over to focusing more on free-market economic policies, which have been stepped on since the early 1900s by the initial Progressive movement. In summary, this is more about opening a back door for very bad economic policies to take root in the United States, via the use of bad climate models which are the front door of the climate-change discussion. The debate is not over, rather it is just the beginning. Unless, that is, free speech gets stepped on. Wait a minute: that is exactly what Progressives are trying to do right now, along with their other misguided priorities. Stupid is as stupid does: if you vote stupid, you get stupid. Period.

The big picture here is that the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has lost all credibility because of both Climate Gates due to the thousands of e-mails that were leaked, that clearly expose the truth that many anthropogenic global warming (AGW) scientists frankly admit to each other that much of the science is weak and is very dependent upon deliberate manipulation of the facts and data. These scientists view climate change as a political cause, rather than having a balanced scientific discussion, in order to retrieve more funding to further their own career. Statistics are no better than the methods and definitions used in collecting them. If all aerospace scientists were to follow AGW scientist’s methods, planes would have a hard time getting off the ground. All scientists do agree on one small slice: there has been warming over the past several hundred years but there is no agreement as to whether warming is dangerous or not. But this latest “apocalypse” has opportunist members such as Hollywood that have joined the band-

He cited both the Overlake Corridor expansion/ Group Health site and the recent Nokomis Building dispute as examples of the city’s longstanding disregard for resident and community input for growth in Redmond. She met Fields through family tennis lessons at Central Park, and during his term on the board at the club, where he was instrumental in a building campaign that financed the construction of a larger building for

and sexual violence. When they get it wrong, the public lets them hear about it. But that wasn’t always the case. In 1995, the Seattle Mariners were in a race for the Western Division Pennant and fans adopted the phrase “Refuse to Lose” to cheer them on. It was the first time the team advanced to the American League Championship Series and it was a time when no one in professional sports was talking about domestic violence. The Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WSCADV) asked the Mariners if they would collaborate on a domestic violence prevention campaign. The Mariners response? “Yes. It’s the right thing to do.” Since that day, the two organizations have partnered on this effort. Van Winkle said entries will continue with the weekend’s theme and have some sort of birthday party motif. In addition, she said the parade’s grand marshals, longtime Redmond residents Roger Trepanier and Sandy Marion, like the festival, are also celebrating their 75th birthdays this year. Van Winkle noted that this year’s parade route has changed. It begins on the corner of Northeast 85th Street and 158th Avenue Northeast, will travel south and head east on Northeast 83rd Street and north on 161st Avenue Northeast before heading west on Northeast 85th Street and finishing where it started. “It just spreads it out,” Van Winkle said, adding that this will give more people a chance to see the parade along its route. The Kids Parade will also run the same route, but will head north on 160th Avenue Northeast up to Northeast 85th Street — a shorter route to accommodate the younger participants. Also in this year’s Grand Parade will be a Fill The Truck float by Redmond United Methodist Church. This will be a food drive and people are encouraged to bring a bag of non-perishable food items to the parade route, watch for the church’s truck and hand their donation to a walker in a dark blue shirt. Another activity that has been brought back — but reinvented — is the Derby Queen Scholarship. Van Winkle said it is now called the Derby Do-Gooder Award and highlights a high school junior or senior from Redmond who has been impacted by completing community service. She added that the scholarship, which is sponsored by Umpqua Bank, is now also open to both male and female applicants.
The inaugural Do-Gooder recipient is Julia Doherty, who graduated from Redmond High School on June 12. Redmond and Cascade Water Alliance continue water discussion with residents Submitted by the City of Redmond Residents in the City of Redmond and Cascade Water Alliance have water, in the midst of statewide drought, because of longterm planning, strategic investment and a commitment to serving its residents. But how residents use that water and why they need it is the focus of an innovative effort by Redmond and Cascade Water Alliance to continue the conversation with residents throughout the region as to the need of water, and how individuals value it. Uncle Dan Dreher described Susie as “wonderful, lively, athletic and artsy,” and fondly remembered the time the Redmond family visited his family’s home in Texas and took photos in the bluebonnet fields. Susie was a funny and spirited girl, according to her teachers, Whitney Alderson and Tamica Alexander, who noted that she liked to get messy whenever classroom projects were geared that way. screen, Susie is seen playing in the sand and getting it in her hair, dribbling a soccer ball and tumbling on a mat. Susie, an early walker, was drawn to sports by the time she was 1 and a half years old and was always kicking or throwing a ball, the family wrote in her obituary. “Recently, a seasoned coach had stepped aside to say how she had never seen a 2-year-old with such apparent talent for dribbling a soccer ball. She loved the Seahawks and insisted on

The 20-year-old stage dancer, who trained at the Premiere Dance Center in Redmond, made it into the top 36 on “So You Think You Can Dance,” but couldn’t crack the overall top 20. Arun’s TV run ended on Monday when the top 20 was revealed on FOX. The top 20 is comprised of 10

A message on Arun’s Facebook page reads, in part: “I am so thankful to have been part of such an incredible week with so many beautiful artists, and I wish all my friends in the top 10 stage dancers the best of luck! Western Washington University honored its Outstanding Graduates for the 2014-15 academic year at spring commencement June 13. Faculty members from dozens of academic departments and programs selected one graduate to honor as the Outstanding Graduates of the year. Selection is a high honor based on grades, research and writing, service to the campus and community, and promise for the future. Redmond’s Mauricio Romano and Rachel Wulff were two of the honorees. • Romano, who was the Outstanding Graduate in the industrial design program, graduated in June with a bachelor of science degree in industrial design. He received the Senior Merit Award at the Industrial Designers Society of America western conference, one of just five students to receive the award across the country. He spent a year as an intern at Intel in Oregon, where he worked on a range of products, includ-

putex tradeshow in Taipei, Taiwan. The tablet, called Llama Mountain, is based on Intel’s upcoming Broadwell processor. He holds two utility patents, one provisional patent
and five design patents. Meanwhile, Romano’s “Walk Talk” two-way radio design concept was featured in a magazine in Singapore, and as a freshman he won an international design contest to make a custom arcade stick. • Wulff, who was the Outstanding Graduate in the University Honors Program, graduated magna cum laude in March with a bachelor of music degree in music education and vocal performance. At Western, Wulff has been a student, guest conductor, presenter, employee, leader and teacher. She performed with the Western Opera Studio, with the Concert Choir and Western Voices ensembles, in guest masterclasses, in two solo recitals and in a variety of other concerts. She was also involved with the Western chapters of the American Choral Directors and Collegiate Washington Music Educators Association. This fall, she will begin work as a music teacher in Mount Vernon.
Redmond’s Sarah Cardoza has been named to the Dean’s List at Providence College in Rhode Island for the spring 2015 semester. To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must achieve at least a 3.55 grade point average with a minimum of 12 credits.
Providence College is the only college or university in the United States administered by the Dominican Friars. The Catholic, liberal arts college has an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 3,900 students and offers degrees in 49 academic majors. Since 1997, Providence College has consistently been ranked among the top five regional universities in the north according to U.S. News’ America’s Best Colleges.
