Actor finds his voice in a career spent talking Island man’s voiceover work is heard around the country By ELIZABETH SHEPHERD For The Beachcomber
If the name “Voice of Vashon” hadn’t long ago been claimed for the local radio station, it might well have been an apt moniker for islander Jeff Hoyt. Hoyt speaks with a resonant, mellifluous sound that is instantly recognizable to many locals. As the program director of Voice of Vashon, he has recorded many of the station’s public service announcements and he co-hosts the Morning Scramble show once a week. For years, he’s also emceed Vashon Allied Arts’ auction, the Vashon Community Scholarship Foundation’s spelling bee and the Strawberry Festival parade. But many islanders might not
know that Hoyt’s dulcet cadences aren’t only familiar here at home. They’re also heard on a daily basis by thousands, sometimes even millions, of people worldwide. He’s a top-tier voice actor who does it all: radio and television ads, web video, film narration, online learning courses and increasingly, audiobooks. On a recent morning, Hoyt welcomed a visitor to the state-of-theart recording studio in his home on Vashon, and explained, in an awshucks kind of way, the appeal of his particular voice. “I’m the least versatile guy I know,” he said. “I don’t do dialects or extreme characters. I get cast to just be me, being me. Fortunately, there is a huge call for that. The fire department fielded nearly twice as many calls as usual over the holiday weekend, with three fires reported and multiple aid calls. “I am very happy we staffed up for it,” said George Brown, interim acting fire chief at Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR). From Friday through Sunday, Brown said, the department responded to 21 calls, eight on Friday, four on Saturday and nine on Sunday. With the dry conditions, many on Vashon were concerned about fire, and Brown added staff and volunteers to weekend shifts and

Not everyone complied, however, and fireworks caused two brush fires, he said, one on Cemetery Road and one on the north end, both growing to about 10,000 square feet. “We got there quick and kept them from getting big,” he added. A variety of medical calls, including some that were heatrelated, came in, but there were no fireworks-related injuries. State officials have charged Vashon therapist Jeffrey Zheutlin with unprofessional conduct and have suspended his license for six months. Zheutlin violated the law by becoming romantically involved with a patient, who was his client as well as the mother of a juvenile whom Zheutlin also treated, according to documents from Washington’s Department of Health (DOH). A settlement, reached late last month, also requires that he take 12 hours of continuing education regarding boundaries and ethics and pay a fine of $2,000. Additionally, when he applies to have his license reinstated, he may have to abide by conditions the state imposes, such as a probationary period or a restriction on practicing alone. Zheutlin worked at Vashon Youth & Family Services for more than 20 years and was the agency’s clinical director when he resigned last September, two weeks after the Department of Health opened its investigation. State proposes ferry fare increases The Washington State Transportation Commission is asking the public to weigh in on a proposal to raise ferry fares over the next year, with car fares increasing slightly more than passenger fares. The commission was tasked by the state Legislature with generating $375 million more in ferry revenue in the next biennium. It proposed a 2.5 percent fare increase for vehicles this October and again in May of 2016, as well as a 1 percent increase for passengers in October and again next May.

Greg Beardsley, head of Vashon’s Ferry Advisory Committee, co-chaired a citizen committee that gave feedback on the plan. He said the state is interested in increasing vehicle fares more than passenger fares to encourage carpooling and walking on the ferries. However, Beardsley and others on the committee questioned the plan. He said he believes charging more to drivers is unfair on Vashon. Many commuters are unable to walk on the ferries because of where or when they work, he noted. Bus service in the area has

decreased in recent years, he added, and often people simply need to take their cars for activities such as shopping. “A lot of people have to drive every day,� he said. The committee voted 7-4 against the proposal, he said, with some preferring a plan to raise fees 2.5 percent across the board two times. However, the transportation commission stuck with the original plan, which was proposed by Washington State Ferries. The state raised vehicle fares slightly more than passenger fares two years ago as well. “I don’t think there’s anything we’re going to change in the transportation commission’s planned proposal,� Beardsley said, “but if we don’t speak up as a community now, the policy is going to continue to be this way.� Public hearings on the proposal will take place in Friday Harbor, Whidbey Island and Bremerton. Land trust will show farm as fundraising continues Former strawberry farm to be purchased for preservation By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer
Vashon’s land trust will give tours this weekend of a swath of property near town that it plans to purchase as its first-ever farmland preservation project. “It’s a chance to make sure everyone who wants to see it sees it,” said Tom Dean, executive director of the land trust, “and it’s an opening foray into what will become a public space.” The Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust announced last winter that it intends to purchase 12 acres of land behind the K2 building from islander Miyoko Matsuda, who with her husband farmed strawberries there until the 1980s. The property is currently a hay field, but the land trust plans to lease it as affordable farmland, which many believe there is a lack of on Vashon. The land trust is under contract to purchase the property for $510,000. So far

it has raised about $85,000 in donations from its board members and other donors. The nonprofit also expects to receive roughly $350,000 toward the purchase from King County’s Conservation Futures Tax and Parks Expansion Levy, though that allocation has not been formally approved. The land trust hopes to raise about $90,000 more in private donations. The purchase is set to close at the end of September. Because the county’s budget is not finalized until later in the year and fundraising may not be complete, the land trust plans to take out a bridge loan from a national organization called The
Conservation Fund. Dean noted that Matsuda gave the land trust a year to line up its funding. “For our donors, it shows a level of commitment to the project,” he said of taking the bridge loan. “We’re going to close the deal and finish fundraising.” The rolling property abuts a meadow outside the Open Space for Arts & Community as well as a 5-acre wooded parcel that Matsuda’s brother owns and promised to the land trust in his will. The site is laced with informal trails that people use to travel from town to Center and Paradise Valley. Dean said the land trust plans to keep those
trails open in addition to leasing out the farmland. Land trust officials hope the purchase is the first of many farmland preservation projects on the island. “I think 20 years from now, we’ll look back and say thank God we have these farms that are protected,” he said. Saturday’s event will include a guided tour, information about local wildlife and guest speakers.

Attempts to support island health care unsuccessful so far The group working to improve health care on the island has not made substantive progress, and members say they will regroup in the fall. Last November, representatives of the Vashon-Maury Health Collaborative announced they would like to help provide economical, sustainable and island-directed health care on Vashon, with one of the goals being to keep island providers and draw more to Vashon. In part, they hoped to create a common hub that would provide a variety of administrative support services to island health care professionals and had expected to deliver a business plan in the beginning of this year, but progress has been elusive. “That idea did not gain a lot of traction in the community,” said John Jenkel, an attorney and member of the group. Recently, following the news that Kimberly Valencia had closed her practice at Vashon Women’s Health Center, Jenkel and fellow collaborative member Tag Gornall said the group had reached an impasse and members will reassess the situation over the summer. “We exhausted all options we identified for ourselves,” Jenkel said. The group had also hoped to secure a rural designation for Vashon, which would provide improved student loan forgiveness for providers and increase Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rates, but they were unable to do so. They also attempted to bring a new medical practice to the island, but that will not be happening in the near future either, they added. Vashon has the capability to make changes that would stabilize health care, they said, but so far they have not found a widespread sense of urgency to do so. — Susan Riemer

Adult care program expands to the pool A group of adults was gathered around a table at the Vashon Pool last week, enjoying a chicken and trimmings lunch. The gathering was part of a new program at Vashon Community Care’s Adult Day Care program, Pool and Picnic. The day program is for those 18 and older who need assistance with daily living. The days are geared toward those who attend and typically include art, music and other activities, said recreational therapist Cara Aguilera. As of last week, Wednesdays now include a trip to the pool. On Wednesday mornings, Aguilera teaches a deep water aerobics class open to people of all ages at the public pool and said she thought it would be good to revive a summer pool program for seniors at the same time. Now, with staff and volunteers assisting,
Aguilera takes a van of program participants who would like to swim or walk in the shallow end, join aerobics — excellent for those who do not want to do weightbearing exercise — or relax in a lounge chair. Last week, just five people attended, and Aguilera said she would like to increase that, as she has room for as many as 14. Following the picnic, Aguilera and her lunch companions enjoyed the children gathering on the deck, she said, and the kids also helped with a game of poolside ping pong. Financial aid is available for the day health program; the deep water aerobics class is $3, with financial aid available for that as well. I will share some unidentifiable snippets, so you can see just a small piece of our work. • “John” wants to leave his abusive wife but knows that if he did, she would get custody and she would not let him see his children. • “Julia”, her husband and baby live together. Her husband accidentally hit the baby when he was beating “Julia” while she was nursing. She has nowhere to go to be safe, so she stays. • “Sammy” has changed the locks on her doors three times in order to keep her abuser out, but she pays for the place, so the police can’t really do anything. “Sammy” wakes up once per week with her abuser standing over her bed holding a gun. She is terrified that she will take her out to the woods one night and end it all; she stays because it is this life or homelessness. • “Sheila” has two dogs that she loves very much. Her husband has said that if she leaves, he will kill the dogs. Yep. This is what we do. And this is why I am frequently flabbergasted by why, as a society, we don’t make people-with-abusive-behaviors accountable. Until we do, we will never see the end of domestic violence. A healthy gut makes for a healthy body
Widening gap in ferry fares isn’t fair on Vashon
We are not alone. Ninety percent of the cells in our bodies are not human. They are microbes — bacteria that influence our health and happiness throughout our lives. These microbes evolved along with humanity. One type is acquired during childbirth as the baby passes through the birth canal. It specializes in digesting breast milk and prepares the baby to digest solid food. A child born by C-section does not acquire this type of microbe, which, according to the University of Chicago’s Celiac Disease Center, is probably why they develop celiac disease more often than babies born vaginally. Celiac disease causes the body’s immune system to attack the wall of the intestine when gluten is eaten. C-section babies have higher rates of other diseases that also correlate to the types of microbes in the body. A healthy microbiome — or community of organisms — has about 1,500 species of microbes, all with specialized tasks. Most of us have far fewer. Our culture is obsessed with cleanliness, but children raised in clean environments lack microbes that would properly “train” their immune systems. As a result, such children have higher rates of allergies and asthma. Worse, a child in the United States is, on average, treated with antibiotics 10 to 20 times by age 18. Antibiotics wipe out a third of the microbiome. Some species of microbes remain dormant for years after antibiotic treatment. I was pleased to learn that people who have pets, particularly pets
The state should rethink its recent trend of increasing ferry fares for drivers at a higher rate than it increases those for passengers. And Vashon residents who want to see this movement end should speak up now. With an order to increase revenue from ferry fares, the state has proposed increasing tickets for vehicles by 2.5 percent and tickets for passengers and walk-ons by just 1 percent later this year. The same increases would happen again next year. Similar fare hikes were put in place two years ago, meaning the difference between what drivers pay and what passengers pay could be getting larger and larger. With climate change a pressing issue and with traffic in the region worsening, it makes sense to give ferry riders incentive to carpool or walk on the boat by keeping those ticket prices lower. However, on Vashon, the choice to drive or walk on the ferry is likely more influenced by where riders are going than ticket prices. Many commuters can take buses from Fauntleroy to their workplaces. However, many people work too far away to take the bus, work in a place where bus service isn’t convenient or work hours when buses aren’t in regular service. King County’s Metro bus service has been cut in recent years on Vashon and on the mainland, and the county has threatened additional cuts more than once. It’s becoming harder to get bus connections to and from the ferry. For those who aren’t commuters, walking on the ferry is often just not an option due to where they are going, what they’re doing or who they have with them. Ferry tickets are costly and are already a big part of some families’ budgets. Many believe high ferry fares also discourage new families from moving here. When fares do have to go up, they should hit all tickets equally, not bring a greater burden for those who in many cases have no choice but to drive. An expected 11.9 cent gas tax increase to fund the state’s transportation needs — including ferries — will only pile on more costs for drivers. A citizen committee that included representatives of ferry served communities seemed to agree when it voted 7-4 to not recommend the lopsided proposal. The state might consider other means to encourage walking on, such as funding sustained bus service or providing extra incentives for carpoolers. It’s possible that after implementing these new fares, the state might widen it’s fare gap even further in another two years. If this is a trend islanders don’t like, the state should hear about it. However you feel, consider commenting on this proposal before the Washington State Transportation Commission makes its final in decision August. See wstc.wa.gov for more on how to comment.

Gardeners and farmers have more diverse microbiomes, too. Amazingly, some microbes trigger the production of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that creates feelings of calm and well-being. Soon we may treat depression and anxiety by altering a person’s microbiome. Obesity is also highly influenced by the microbiome. When lean mice are given microbes from obese mice, they become obese. The reverse is also true, but only as long as the obese mice are given a healthy diet along with the microbes from their lean kin. The right diet is essential to retain the “good” microbes. We cannot control whether we were born by natural childbirth or C-section, but we can shift the spectrum of microbes in our gut to some degree. Two Stanford scientists, Justin and Erica Sonnenburg, published a book this year titled “The Good Gut.” They explain the microbiome and, as parents of young children, they give tips and recipes to get children to eat healthy foods. I wish this book had

Sharing the road means sharing rules We have a lot of bicycle traffic on Vashon. We have signs beseeching us to share the road. I am happy to share the road. Driving my car, I am glad to wait behind a line of cyclists as we all approach a blind curve or a steep hill with no visibility of oncoming traffic. I think of these folks as reducing the carbon footprint for all of us. Here is what I don’t get: cyclists running stop signs. Yes, I understand that to actually stop the bike and put a foot on the pavement breaks momentum. But
it is not safe for a cyclist to run a stop sign, glancing back and forth as they enter the intersection, scanning for traffic. More than once I, having actually stopped for a stop sign, have turned right and nearly creamed a person on a bicycle who came up from behind me and assumed I was going straight. I had stopped and looked for traffic and pedestrians in all directions. The cyclist was not in sight as I began my turn, having been just below the crest of a hill that hid them. Not only that, I figured that cyclists were bound to the traffic laws in the same manner as I; I expect

been available when my kids were small. A healthy microbiome requires a lot of fiber, because that is what microbes eat. Processed foods that form the “Western diet” are the worst thing for the microbiome. We need to eat fresh vegetables and fruit, legumes, nuts and seeds. Grains should be coarsely ground to get the maximum amount of fiber. In my 20s, I had a handturned grinder for grains and bought fresh whole wheat and berries to make cereal and bread. Hmm, where is that thing now? Red meat should be avoided because microbes that thrive on it produce a chemical that causes strokes and heart attacks. We can increase good microbes in our systems by eating fermented foods, such as unsweetened yogurt or kefir and fermented vegetables like pickles and sauerkraut. To my dismay, most artificial sweeteners seem to trick the microbiome into causing insulin resistance and weight gain. Stevia is the only sugar substitute that has not (yet) been shown to have this effect. Starbucks will not put Stevia in my latte — another reason to stick with the independent coffee stand near my office. To resist a cold diet soda on warm afternoons, I bought icedf tea makers for my office and home. A good glass of iced tea does the trick. So, be good to your microbes and they will return the favor.

July 4th celebration dinner at the Vashon Senior Center 2015: home of The Greatest Generation. Fried chicken, potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, watermelon and cake. Frail folks, some blind, most deaf, all disabled. The hokey part: two pages of songs for after dinner, which many today might feel embarrassed to sing: “America the Beautiful,” the national anthem, “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” various hymns. Revamped Relay for Life to be held at Agren Park Vashon’s Relay for Life will look different this year, with organizers hoping to attract more people to the fundraising event. Vashon has hosted the Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, since 2009. In some recent years, however, turnout has been low, possibly because the event was all night long and team members were asked to camp out at the Vashon High School track, said Jenni Nadler, a community manager for Relay for Life. This year the event will be held during the daytime hours at Agren Park. Local organizers have planned a variety of activities to appeal to all ages, including musical performances, croquet and bocce ball, yoga, games and a food truck. “It will be more like a community festi-

val,” Nadler said. The event will still include an event for cancer survivors and caregivers as well as a ceremony honoring those who have died from cancer. As of Monday, there were 15 teams and 83 participants signed up for the fundraiser, which Nadler said was already more than last year. Islanders are also encouraged to drop by at any time during the day, Nadler said, whether or not they are able to donate. “We wanted something that will revitalize it and bring people back into the effort,” she said. By Chris Austin So now it is the late 1950s in our time-line of the island’s annual merrymaking but sadly it was probably one of the lowest points in its history. By 1958 there was such little interest in the event that it was almost canceled. Fortunately the Jaycees stepped forward as sponsors. While the organizers of the gala may have suffered ennui, the attendees surely didn’t. There was “Festival Bowling” for the tenpin crowd, bingo for gamblers and a dunk tank for those in the mood for some schadenfreude. You could go on a carnival ride, catch the “Rock Club Exhibit” or watch a model-airplane flying demonstration. I am sure my favorite would have been the “light refreshments” available at the missile battery’s open house. Ah yes, nothing like a bit of lavender tea while prattling on about the kill radius of a Nike missile. Our local battalion even entered a float in the parade which included their candidate for “Miss Seattle Air Defense.” Probably one reason the festival volunteers’ esprit de corps slumped was the sheer geographical size of the affair. Parts of it were sprinkled all over the island. For instance, there was the hole-in-one contest on Maury Island, boat races were in Burton and horsey stuff was located on 111th Avenue. You had to go south to Dockton for swimming and picnicking then turn around and go up to 156th Street for the square dancing. It must have been a logistical nightmare for the coordinators. By the mid-1960s our island celebration was as fun packed as ever. You could start off in the morning with a pancake breakfast, take in some arts and crafts then listen to a bagpipe exhibition. If the non-stop droning and skirling of that musical octopus got you in the mood to punch someone, well, just head on down to the Island Club Field for “boxing matches, bouts and instructions.” If pugilism wasn’t your thing you could match wits in the greased pig contest. This period must have been the high point for the contest of feminine charms. In one 1968 photo the festival’s queen had no less than eight ladies in her court, some with flowers, some with tiaras but all with elegant white gloves well past the elbow. Competition was stiff too. Candidates had to participate in evening gown, swimsuit and talent competitions. And if you weren’t voted queen there was always the “Miss Congeniality Award” (although I don’t know how congenial you could be if you weren’t named queen). Before the coronation of the new monarch the old one had one last duty, the “Queen’s Final Walk.” I guess that was just before they threw her into the volcano. Photographer explores human landscape in new book By JULI GOETZ MORSER Staff Writer
A figure in a firefighter’s suit appears in assorted Western landscapes. A young woman in a dress fashioned from bubble wrap populates dreamy urban and natural environments. Both anomalous and thought-provoking figures become the actual and metaphorical stars in a new book by island photographer David Lynch, “Strangers in the Landscape: Dialogues of Figure and Landscape in the American West.” The book compiles two series of photographs — one showcasing the fire suit, the other with the bubble wrap dress — by Lynch, with text by Annie Brulé. A release party for the new book is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hastings-Cone Gallery next to Snapdragon. Lynch will show slides, and Brulé will read excerpts from the book. Lynch, who grew up in western Massachusetts, began his photography career shooting landscapes near his hometown of Northhampton and across the terrain of New Zealand. When a friend invited him on a trip to Guatemala in 1991, Lynch agreed to go and soon found himself as a stranger in a new land, not knowing the language, the culture or the topography. The novelty hooked Lynch. He stayed for a year to shoot — as a photojournalist — images with social commentary, a documentary project he continues to this day throughout Central America. But Lynch also longed to do something different, which is where the fire suit and bubble wrap dress come in. “I always wanted to shoot outside the box, think outside the box,” Lynch said. “I had the fire suit with me; it was following me around everywhere I moved. I thought

the road for a month for a photo shoot of indeterminate nature in 2003. “I was not really sure what I’d do with it. The idea was forming as I was on the road.”
As Lynch drove past the sparse lands of the Southwest, possible scenarios floated through his mind, but nothing stuck. Then one day, through the tumbleweeds, the word “Hope” appeared, and Lynch knew he’d landed on the perfect scene. “It’s the name of a place, but I came in the back way, not through the town. I’m not a religious person, but I saw it as a sign from the universe,” Lynch said. Lynch uses the fire suit and bubble wrap dress as metaphors for humankind and the landscape as a metaphor for the human condition. While the fire suit conjures isolation and protection from the sometimes harsh and brutal outer world, he said, the girl in the bubble wrap dress is all about the strength of fragility and exploring the feminine in contemporary culture. Brulé’s essay “The West is a Territory Inside Us” opens by saying skin comes in all kinds of thicknesses — an allusion to the way we react to what life brings. Do we form a tough outer layer, Brulé asks, or remain soft and open, or perhaps it is a complex combination. Brulé writes, “These otherworldly figures ultimately ask us, ‘How will I inhabit my own experience?’ Will I wall myself off in fire-proof immunity, a mirror of the world around, untouchable and, perhaps worse, unable to touch? Or will I remain open, vulnerable to the winds that buffet this earthly existence, and to the possibility of being blown off course or pierced by sharp edges, in exchange for the exhilaration of walking through life whole, exposed, and alive? We are all strangers in the landscape, entering and leaving this world alone; it is up to us which kind of skin we clothe ourselves in for the journey.” Along with copies of the book, prints of the images will be sold at the reading.

When David Hartness graduated from Vashon High School in 2001, he worked for three months as a volunteer teaching English in a small rural village in Kenya. Now, nine years later and based on seven years of experience living in Africa, Hartness has published a novel set in Mozambique called “Amani’s River.” Hartness will read from his new book at 5 p.m. Friday at Vashon Bookshop. “Amani’s River” tells the story of a 10-year-old American boy whose parents return to their native Mozambique to live on the banks of a beautiful river. The family settles in, but soon violence breaks out. The boy, Aderito, is abducted by rebels and forced to become a trained killer. “I hope the book is an eye-opener and people will keep in mind there are still 250,000 children serving as child soldiers,” Hartness said. Unofficial mayor runs for reelection Caleb Johns, the current unofficial mayor of Vashon, announced last week that he will run for reelection to the faux post. In the Strawberry Festival tradition where donations to a charity count as votes, Johns is campaigning in support of the Vashon Community Care Foundation. He is up against Joe Thieme, who is running in support of Rj’s Kids, and a goat named Bandit, who is running on behalf of Vashon Youth Baseball & Softball. Johns also ran in support of the VCC Foundation last summer. He said that growing up on Vashon, he watched some elderly people leave the island and their families for care in other places. Vashon Community Care, he said, plays an important role by allowing residents to stay on the island as they age. The care center turns no one away for lack of funds, but in recent years has relied on community fundraising to help make up for what Medicare doesn’t cover. “I think the foundation is a fantastic addition to providing sustainability to the care center,” he said. Johns is perhaps best known on Vashon as the farmers market manager and lead server at May Kitchen + Bar. As unofficial mayor, he has attended several local events and ribbon cuttings in the past year and even made mock mayoral proclamations. He said he enjoyed being able to fill the role and was surprised how much people appreciated his lighthearted mayoral appearances. “I found that the actual duties ... are developing into something that’s very valuable for the community,” he said. Johns didn’t originally plan to run for reelection, he said, but was approached

He’s glad to raise more money for the foundation, he said. And should he win, he looks forward to continuing his mayoral duties. “A lot of people before me and myself have invested in something that will grow and be a valuable part of this community,” he said. Unofficial mayor candidates can campaign and raise money until the Strawberry Festival, which will take place July 17 through 19. Donation jars are in locations around town. With calls not to use fireworks coming from a variety of officials, including the governor, sales were down about 40 percent at the Vashon Fireworks Company, according to Gabriel Felix, who owns the fireworks stand. “If you are going to have a bad year, you want it to be for the right reasons,” Felix said on Monday. “People were making good choices. I appreciate they were doing that and using good judgement to have a safe Fourth of July.” Felix, who designs heart monitors professionally and has said he brings fireworks to the island because he’s interested in the science behind them, noted he and his staff at the stand stressed caution this year. “We really pushed fireworks safety in terms of prevention with each customer,” he said. “It was too dry; if you were not on the
beach, you were being dangerous.” While his “die hard” customers bought fireworks this year, he added, he believes more conservative customers did not. This year he sold only 30 packs of quiet fireworks, he noted, compared to 140 last year. In the off-season, Felix stores his unsold fireworks in a special storage facility in Tacoma. This year storage fees will be high, he noted, but the lack of sales will not create a hardship for him — as it does for those who rely on fireworks sales for income. “I will keep designing heart monitors for my real job,” he said, “and it will be OK.” Unrelated to the holiday, VIFR responded to a house fire on Westside Highway late in the afternoon on Sunday. The residents of the home reported smoke coming through the vents, and by the time firefighters arrived, Brown said, smoke was coming out of the eaves. “That is the worst kind of fire,” he added. “When you cannot see it, you’ve got to go find it.” With the help of a thermal imag-

Five small hydroplanes were launched into Quartermaster Harbor on Saturday morning, carrying on the tradition of circling Vashon in the early morning hours of the Fourth of July. The informal race dates back to the late 1950s, when Roger Stanley and Warren Bibbins raced each other around the island in their hydros. This year on a perfectly calm morning, five hydros were launched from the Jensen Point start/finish line, and 41:26 minutes later, Karl Olsen flew by the finish line for
his second win in a row. Olsen’s boat, which has run the circuit many years and has been passed down from at least four now retired racers, took advantage of the calm early morning waters to edge out Mitch Van Buskirk, who came in at 43:15, followed by Ty Christophersen at 43:30. Olsen was presented with a new perpetual trophy, designed by racer Larry Fuller and made from the power head of an old hydro motor. The perpetual trophy has been passed from winner to winner since 1976, and this year it had had no more room for winners’ names. Evan Mattingly also started the race but was not able to finish after a breakdown near Camp Sealth. Paul Hoffmann intended to race as well but had mechanical problems and did not start.

Master rowers beat the heat at Regionals Bill Burby fun run set for Strawberry Festival weekend

Rule one: Apply sunscreen liberally. Rule two: Stay continually hydrated. Rule three: Stay under the shade of the cottonwood trees whenever possible. Racing in sweltering heat well north of 90 degrees most of the weekend, Vashon Island’s masters rowers medalled in half the events they entered at the Northwest Masters Regional Championships June 26 to 28 on Vancouver Lake near the Columbia River. Of the 13 events in which Vashon placed first, second or third, five medals were claimed by Vashon’s lightweight women, a small sub-group of the club that has been rowing together on Quartermaster Harbor for years. Various combinations of Jan Peterson, Debby Jackson, Therese Smith, Carri Singer, Celia Congdon and coxswain Lisa Huggenvik won medals in every lightweight event they entered, including gold in the lightweight women’s four and pair races. “Lightweights row against all ages, and the older boats get an age handicap,” Congdon said. “That means every second ends up counting, so we have to keep our heads in our own boat and just row our race.” Also claiming gold at Regionals this year was a women’s pair with Kim Goforth in stroke and Marilyn Kleyn in bow. A mixed four also took first with Su DeWalt stroking the boat in front of Colby Atwood, Chad Magnuson and Mary Rothermel, with Debby Jackson coxing.

Assistant coach Tom Kicinski stood in for coach Richard Parr at Regionals this year and said that a masters regatta is nothing like a juniors regatta, where the same lineups prepare for weeks or months in advance. “Vashon held its own in a lot of races where the crews had limited or no practice time before race day,” Kicinski said. “This was a nice surprise for me. It means that people are rowing a similar stroke and can jump into a lineup with most anyone and find a way to move the boat.” Next, the masters turn toward a long summer of warm-weather practice rowing on flat, early morning water before beginning to tune up for the longer head racing season during
the fall. For islanders curious about the sport, Vashon Island Rowing Club is offering a two-day learn-to-row class for adults ages 18 and over from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 25, and from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, July 26. The class offers an introduction to rowing basics and will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to help interested rowers get started in the sport. The cost for the two days is $100. The Bill Burby Inspirational 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk will celebrate 35 years this year on Saturday, July 18, when Russ Brazill fires off the starting gun promptly at 9 a.m. While there have been some disputes about the actual first year of the event, Bob McCormick, Vashon High School Class of 1983, has a copy of the registration from the first Fun Run, confirming that it was July 11, 1981. At that time, McCormick was the sophomore class president and part of a leadership team looking for a way to raise money. Their class advisor, Henry Beal, suggested a fun run. “We were pretty astounded to learn that people would pay as much as $8 to run a race,” recalled McCormick. McCormick and his classmate Neal Allen approached the K2 Corporation, which agreed to be the event sponsor by buying shirts and printing forms. With a sponsor in place, the boys suddenly realized, “Oh, this might actually happen.” So they started asking around to see who might have some experience to help them put on a fun run. They learned that teacher-coaches Russ Brazill and Bill Burby had been organizing an informal run during Strawberry Festival weekend for several years and already had a course laid out. They joined forces, and the K2 Fun Run was born. When Burby unexpectedly died in 1989, the event was renamed The Bill Burby Inspirational Fun Run. Over the years, the course location has changed and the organization of the event has been passed on to to different groups at the high school. A 5K run and a 5K walk have been added to the traditional 10K run. Registration fees have increased to $25 for an adult and $15 for 18 and under, but still include a T-shirt. New sponsors have stepped up to help organizers offset the cost of putting on the event each year. The 10K and 5K runs are now officially timed by BuDu Racing, and the event is sanctioned by USA Track & Field. The first-place prize is a $100 gift certificate from STORY CONTINUES, NEXT PAGE

Northwest Sports, and second place is a $75 gift certificate from CoreCentric for both male and female winners in the 10K and 5K runs. First-, second- and third-place medals are awarded to the top finishers in each age bracket. The 5K walk is not officially timed, and prizes are not awarded, but participants are assigned a chipped bib and number to allow them to track their personal time. Funds raised from that first run went to benefit the Vashon Athletic Booster Club. Today the funds raised through this event continue to support high school athletic teams and the Bill Burby Wellness Scholarship. Participants can also choose to Run for Ryan and donate to the Ryan Krug Scholarship Fund. Organizers would like to encourage anyone who has been involved in the run to visit the event’s Facebook page and share their stories. The run and walk will begin at 9 a.m. at the VYFS Playspace. Islanders compete in annual tennis tournament Winebledon has been held on Vashon for more than a decade Mary Beba and Gil Garcia became the first mixed doubles team to win the annual Winebledon tournament held at Vashon High School courts the last weekend of June. Lightning interrupted the final sets, but the players returned to the courts after a 10-minute break. Beba and Garcia defeated Dave Carroll and Frank Davis in a pro set the semifinal, 8-5, and went on to beat Dick Cushing and Alan Warneke at 7-5 in a tiebreaker after splitting the two-set final. Cushing and Warneke defeated Molly Johnson and Lars Strandberg 8-1 in the pro set semifinal. In the consolation bracket, Jeff Johnson and Ron Irvine defeated Deb Cekosh and Mark Leonard, 8-4, in the pro set. Nick Smith and Bart Queary pulled out a narrow victory over Marcy Rice and Mike Douvier, 8-6. Johnson and Irvine beat Smith and Queary in a close final in the consolation match, 6-4, 6-4. Winebledon has evolved over 11 years to a unique format. Players are rated into two pools seeded by the tournament directors into higher- and lowerrated players. Doubles teams are drawn at random from each pool. Those teams play a round robin on Saturday morning on the VHS courts. Based on their records in the round robin, the teams are placed in two equal tournaments to be played on Sunday. Winebledon is sponsored by Vashon Island Tennis Club and the Vashon Winery. The club has no rules, dues or bylaws and is made up of an everchanging group of players who play regularly at VHS starting at 7 a.m. All players are welcome to come and play.

officials say. He continued to practice outside of the agency after he resigned. Reached last week, Zheutlin provided a statement via email. “As a therapist, I have been blessed to share the lives of so many people on Vashon for the last 25 years. I hope this community can now show me grace and understand I am human too. Professionally, I made a big mistake with serious consequences. But personally, I chose to follow my heart and have never been happier. I have learned and grown personally and professionally through this situation, and I look forward to working in this community again soon,” he wrote. Documents indicate Zheutlin, who was married at the time, provided counseling for a woman identified as “Patient A” from the spring of 2012 to September of 2013, and in the summer of 2013, the two began a romantic relationship, which is ongoing. Zheutlin also provided treatment for the woman’s child in approximately the

same time frame. The state never condones sexual misconduct on the part of a health professional, said DOH case manager Tammy Kelley, but it does consider aggravating and mitigating factors. In this case, she said, sanctions were on the low end of the spectrum of possibilities because of mitigating factors, including that Zheutlin does not have a prior disciplinary history with the department and that he cooperated fully with investigators. In some cases involving sexual misconduct, the state suspends licenses for up to five years or completely revokes the practitioner’s license, she added. Kelley noted that in addition to being Zheutlin’s client, the woman he developed a relationship with was an intern under his supervision at Vashon Youth & Family Services (VYFS). The Department of Health does not have disciplinary authority over agencies, she said, but if investigators would have turned up evidence of wrongdoing at the agency, including if people knew of the relationship, but turned a blind eye to it, officials would have investigated. “If we had seen anything leading to that in our investigation, we would have pursued it,” she said, “but obviously nothing made us believe it.”

Kathleen Johnson, the executive director at VYFS, declined to comment, saying that agency policy is to keep personnel matters confidential. Once the six months of his license suspension have passed and Zheutlin has completed all the requirements, his license will likely be reinstated with conditions. “We are going to want some oversight once he is back in practice,” Kelley said. Additionally, she noted that in some cases a requirement to practice with others would mean that the health professional could not practice at all — which would run counter to the intent of the agency. Other arrangements might be made in that case, she said, including that the health provider work with a practice consultant, who, in turn, would report to the Department of Health. “We want someone to be able to safely practice in the least restricted means available,” she added. The laws regarding sexual misconduct exist to protect patients because there is always a power imbalance between a provider and patient, Kelley said, adding that in small communities, the situation can be particularly challenging, but legally, the boundaries are set. “To follow the law, you have to draw the line in the sand,” she said.

Recently, the Billy Graham Evangelical Association hired him to narrate three television documentaries, one of which is a television special about the famous preacher’s life. Hoyt’s wheelhouse as the voice of the average Joe has earned him what he called “a very good living” in a highly competitive and increasingly global field. But he quickly clarified what he means by that. “To me, a very good living is to make a livable salary, to be able to work from home in my bare feet and be able to go on vacation whenever I want,” he said. “Those are the things, to me, that make my job really enjoyable.” Indeed, on the day he showed off his studio, he was dressed casually in shorts and a short-sleeved shirt and was shoeless. With a solid build, Hoyt has a physical agility that belies his 61 years — perhaps the result of his longtime involvement with the Vashon Island Rowing Club. A clearer sign of his age is a pate that is bald on the top but fringed around the perimeter with wiry white hair. His blue eyes signal both a keen intellect and a friendliness to others. Some say that Hoyt’s successful career is owed to those smarts and people skills. Jamie Lopez, Hoyt’s Seattle talent agent — one of 13 middlemen he employs in various cities — had praise for Hoyt’s business acumen. “A lot of people are talented. But I think what makes Jeff special is the service he provides,” Lopez said. “He’s super responsive and he over-delivers. He’s also a very warm and genuine guy. I think that might also be his secret rocket sauce.” Brian Walter, a multimedia producer who has known Hoyt for 20 years, praised Hoyt’s mastery of the new technology that has kept his field ever-changing. “He was the first guy to get a laptop, he had one of the earliest cellphones, and he was one of the first to have Wi-Fi,” Walter said. “He was one of the first voiceover guys who could do everything himself. He’s very skilled at an esoteric job.” Hoyt’s easygoing yet efficient style was in evidence as he opened his recent workday with rehearsing, recording and editing a spot for a regular client, Washington State University. Truxtun and Janet always loved traveling. In the early days of their marriage his annual two-week vacation meant piling the kids into the station wagon and camping across country to visit grandparents in California and on the East Coast. Later when retirement gave them more time, the couple enjoyed motor home trips around the US and into Mexico, barefoot cruises to warm climates, and winters in the Southwest. Truxtun leaves Janet, his wife of 67 years, his four children: Christine Craven (Rik Dalvit), Catherine (Tom) Mix, Thomas Craven, and Dorothy McCoy, nine grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. He will be remembered as a loving husband and father, and an upright and honest man who did his duty as he saw it. There are no plans for a memorial service. Currently we are looking for a dynamic, community-oriented, and creative teacher to teach the Toddler class for the Academic Year of 2015-2016. 1 1/2 yr old German Shepherd Mix, BRUCE loves people and is gregarious and friendly when given the opportunity to meet someone in a way that makes him comfortable - but he does still have some baggage from his past and will need a home that is committed to making sure he is not put in uncomfortable situations. Above all, Bruce is a true gem of a dog. Maybe not the easiest dog you will ever have, but absolutely the best. The kind of dog you will be telling stories about and hold in your heart forever. Because we would like this dear one to be the center of attention, no kids please but he absolutely ADORES playing with other dogs and would love a poochie playmate.
