Florida team helps BLM assess National Monument Lands By Gretchen Wing Special to the Weekly

Lopez’s National Monument lands received special attention in May and June from a research team led by Dr. Wendy Anderson, Environmental Science professor at Florida’s Stetson University. The team had two mandates: review, summarize and analyze 24 years of volunteer monitors’ reports and other research on Iceberg Point, Point Colville and Watmough Bay to glean trends in human use; and conduct a fine-grain survey of plant species, analyzing and mapping their distribution. Anderson visited Iceberg Point in 1997 and “felt like I had found the place where my soul lives.” Then studying ecosystems in Baja California, she felt drawn to the cool green of the San Juans. In 2008, Anderson bumped into the Bureau of Land Management’s Nick Teague. Teague helped facilitate Anderson’s plan

to survey plants and soil on some outer islands with a group of students. This year, funded by a National Conser vation Lands research grant, the survey moved to Lopez. The team spent six weeks wielding measuring tapes and one-meter-square grids at each site. They ran GPScorrected transect lines south to north to create a 20 meters by 20 meters sampling grid. Within each grid, they identified every plant and noted any rare or invasive species. When some areas proved too dense or prickly to cross, they documented the dominant species from afar. Anderson says, “We agonized over the trampling impact we were making with every footstep, and walked with great care.” While Florida is a long way to travel, Anderson says the San Juans’ wellpreserved but at-risk beauty presents compelling conservation challenges and opportunities. Murphy, who first helped her understand the region’s history, and Colin Doherty, who guided her previous groups’ kayak journeys: “They represent that generation who will continue carrying the torch of conservation.” Her team also enjoyed the annual hospitality of hosts Rick and Sue Ayre on San Juan. Back in Florida, the team will generate multi layered maps for land management, showing, among other things, locations of rare plants and trouble-species that might need controlling.

Meanwhile, their compilation of usage reports shows an increase in inappropriate usage (off-leash dogs, bicycles, etc.), but the rate of misuse is not rising as fast as the rate of visitation. This suggests that public education, or the mere presence of monitors, may help visitors understand the need to minimize their impact. The Monument Advisory Committee invites the public to a meeting on land use with opportunities for public comment on July 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Church.

July 15-17. The Carters have been professional puppeteers since 1976, training with master puppeteers of Romania, Sicily and China. They have been featured performers at National and World Puppet Festivals from Scotland to Uzbekistan. Shadow puppets will be created under the guidance of Dmitri Carter with opportunities to use modern translucent materials, feathers and other found objects to incorporate colors and shadows into the silhouettes. Rachel Buchman arrives from Houston for Children’s Summer Music Camps. Kids love to make musical noise in this class, and it helps them develop the pre-literacy skills needed to play instruments. Buchman’s background is impressive: Her career has brought her to diverse venues throughout the U.S.,

Europe and Israel, from New York’s Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors Festival to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She has recorded seven albums, two of which have been Grammy award semi-finalists, and is the Teaching Artist for the Orcas Chamber Music Festival. July 6. Participants will create their own unique paper and envelopes, embedding plant materials from Ryan’s garden. In a similar vein, Iris Graville, author of “Hands At Work,” will instruct two classes, the first of which is Paste Paper – Finger Painting Grows Up! on July 20. In this class, participants will use brushes, combs, other tools, and paste paints to turn plain white paper into original designs. These hand-painted papers can be used for journal covers in Graville’s Introduction to Journal-Making class on July 21, where participants will learn three simple techniques to make journals. Graville first attended a hand-bound journal-making workshop in 1997. She writes, “Bookbinding is the ideal accompaniment to my work as a writer, providing me the skills to create beautiful (and sometimes quirky) places to record words.” Brooks will offer a class in collage on July 22. She was drawn to collage/mixed media in the 1960s when at art school in New York City. Many were inspired by her collage work displayed at the library, that she was invited to share her skills so the community could learn her techniques and create their own unique piece of art. Cheryl Harlan will offer a class on Your Hands – What Can They Tell You? This July 18 class will teach the essentials of hand-reading.

Each year the TAP show transforms Lopez Center into a magical, musical theater. All is ready for us at showtime: the ticket table, the chairs and risers, the dark curtains, hundreds of costumes. Over 70 performers—preschoolers to retirees—dance their hearts out. We leave with big smiles, amazed that so much spirit and talent can be showcased on such a small island at such an affordable price. Most of us leave without knowing what happens every year behind the scenes. We don’t see the chaos of the numerous dressing areas, how the music is cued in the side hallway, or how the lightboard high above us is delicately played. Few witnessed the vital performance that took place the Monday morning before TAP, when eight volunteers, guided by Chris Coiley, transformed the open floor of Lopez Center into theater seating in under an hour and a half. Seven men and one woman, ages 17 to 73, connected the heavy frames, the carpeted aluminum floor panels and the piped rails like a giant Lego set, then rolled out stacks of chairs and placed them in audience-ready rows. “This job needs to be done six times a year at least,” says Coiley. “It’s physical and it’s fun. And we totally depend on volunteers to set up and take down.” The Giant’s Causeway concert two weeks before required a small army of volunteers to produce; door volunteers to take tickets and welcome people, drink table volunteers to serve refreshments, cleanup volunteers for after the show, and of course someone to make the performers dinner and another person who offered rooms in their house for the band to stay in. “Volunteering is a great way to help the Center produce shows at affordable prices – and volunteers get in for free!” said Assistant Director Robert Harrison. Free or ticketed, every event requires volunteers working behind the scenes. Volunteers help keep rental fees and ticket prices well below actual cost, so that the Center is available to all. Volunteer opportunities are wide-ranging, including helping during events, painting signs, distributing posters, serving on a committee, lending expertise to special projects, gardening, and maintenance to name a few. The biggest, most immediate volunteer need is for the upcoming Fourth of July barbeque, which is backto-back with the Abbey Road LIVE! concert on the July 3. “We’re looking into the eye of the beginning of a summer storm,” explains Center Director Janet Baltzer. “It’s a huge undertaking, and we need volunteers for the Fourth to raise tents, help with food prep, serving the burgers and cleanup. There’s something for everyone who can help.” A small, important task at this time is for a volunteer to raise and lower the flag. ea sure, we agree that no one deserves to be abused. But there really isn’t anything we can do personally to prevent it is there?” A group of concerned men asked me the other day on the inter island ferry. “Well, I am glad you asked!” I replied as we settled into a conversation about social norms, challenging accepted community misconceptions and changing our actions to match our principles. The conversation moved from the needs of abuse victims to the services DVSAS (Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services of the San Juan Islands) offers the survivors. Then on to the education and prevention work that is such an important aspect of what DVSAS and our volunteers do. This led to the newly forming “Stand Up Men Action Groups” on our islands. We discussed how these groups are made up of men from all ages, professions, and life experiences. And how this platform is providing a safe place to gain the knowledge and tools necessary to reach out and educate friends, family and community. As the ferry pulled into the dock and we walked to the car deck one of the younger men said, “You know, I feel so much more empowered to actually do something about abuse. And all it took was to have this conversation. Maybe that is where we can all start the change; just start the conversation.” I love it! It can be that simple! Let’s encourage each other to “Stand Up, Get Educated and Start Talking!” All men are welcome to join the “Stand Up Men Action Groups” forming on each island. Dr. Fries’ 1980 hypothesis – the “Compression of Morbidity” – says that, as we live longer, disability and disease are compressed into a shorter period of time. Two important reasons account for this. One is the rapid increase of medical advances, such as joint replacement surgery, better treatment of diabetes and hypertension, colon cancer screening, and the use of statin drugs to postpone heart disease. The second even more significant factor: prevention. Until relatively recently, we didn’t hear about the benefits of not smoking, exercising, losing weight, wearing seatbelts and eating healthfully. You may yawn at this, but in fact, information about how we can prevent our own decline and disability by following good health habits is a new wrinkle in the world of successful aging – and it’s profoundly changing how many of us grow older. Numerous studies confirm this. One followed 1,700 University of Pennsylvania alumni beginning in 1986 when their average age was 68 to the present. Those who smoked, were obese and did not exercise were

four times as likely to suffer from cumulative disability than those who were lean, exercised and did not smoke. Remarkably, those in the lowest risk, third, experienced a postponement of disability by nearly eight years, compared to those in the highest-risk third. Further (and chillingly), those in the higher-risk categories had a surge of even worse disability levels in the last two years of their lives, compared to those in the lower-risk group. Last time you drove down Center Road, did you notice the sign, “Future Site of the Lopez Island Pool”? Well, there is a lot more happening than an empty lot behind the sign! The FLIP board is an energized group that has performed phenomenal research to determine the

best options for our pool facility and has accomplished amazing things over the past several years. The empty lot was donated generously by John Sorensen. The board attended hearings with the county regarding the land use classification for a successful adjustment to permit a year-

round indoor natatorium. In 2009 the board hired the best aquatic designers in the nation (Aquatics Design Group working with Heery International architects in Seattle) to provide cost analysis, feasibility and a needsbased design. The board listened to the concerns of the Lopez community and

incorporated solutions. In 2011, the board attended the USA Swimming Association’s National Build A Pool Conference. (The USA Swimming Association is the governing body of all public pools.) They approved the work done by Heery and the Aquatics Design Group, allowing the board to develop a solid business plan under their guidance with confidence and knowledge. Did you know there will be two pools rather than one large one? One will be 82 degrees for laps and recreation, and the other at 92

Gladstone has loved photography from an early age, but only began photographing professionally in her twenties. One of her images was recently chosen for “Harvest: The Bounty of Washington,” a juried show of fine art photography at the Washington State Convention Center. Raised in Massachusetts,

she obtained her Master’s in Social Work from Smith College in 2012 and moved here in 2013.

And what about the building? The cost of the whole pool complex has been trimmed three times from the original cost proposal, reducing the footprint and eliminating a large lobby and extra rooms. Last year, a building committee was formed with Brian Silverstein, Nancy Greene and Mark Herrenkohl. They are charged with providing a cost analysis of various building types as well as refining the design. The latest exciting news is that the pools will be Myrtha

design and the natatorium will be built with Kalwall, a thick, insulated, translucent fiberglass material by Structures, Unlimited which will bathe the pool area with natural transfused light. All these big and small details have demanded the full attention of the board. This summer FLIP will expand fundraising because all that is left to do is to build the pool! Heather Gladstone exhibit opens

Abbey Road LIVE! is back Since 2002, Abbey Road LIVE! has rocked the music of the Beatles at clubs, theatres, festivals and numerous shows at Lopez Center! Initially a tribute to the monumental “Abbey Road” album, the band has expanded its scope to include more than 100 Beatles tunes, from all eras of the Fab Four’s career. Abbey Road LIVE! is not your typical Beatle look-alike tribute act; don’t expect mop-top haircuts and vintage Rickenbacker guitars. Rather, this show is about bringing to life some of the more mature and complex Beatles material in a raw and spirited fashion, while remaining true to the original recordings. Abbey Road LIVE! is made up of four allstar musicians from the infamous Athens, Ga. music scene that gave the world R.E.M.,

Widespread Panic and B-52s. Collectively the band members have recorded and toured regularly with Cosmic Charlie, Charlie Mars and Fuzzy Sprouts. Individual band members have also collaborated with acts such as Indigo Girls, Juliana Hatfield, Mike Houser (Widespread Panic), Danielle Howle and Lemonheads. Anyone of any age who enjoys Beatle tunes will love this band and more than likely find themselves singing along to many, if not all the tunes. The show will be outside, weather permitting, on Friday, July 3 at 7 p.m. Bring chairs and blankets. There will be a no-host beer garden.
