You have an itch because you know how to do it at a very high level and the best part about it is we can continue to do it better.”

e in the Pacific Northwest knew it from the beginning, but as the Seattle Seahawks and their top-ranked defense made their way through the NFL last year like a hot knife through butter, the buzz surrounding the team seemed to stay low. All through the season and the playoffs, the Seahawks were downplayed and ignored by popular media and national talking heads. That is until the “underdog” Hawks scored 12 seconds into Super Bowl XLVII and never looked back, blasting the favored Denver Broncos 43-8 and bringing the Vince Lombardi Trophy to Seattle for the first time in the franchise’s history. This season, however, the cat is out of the bag and no one is overlooking the Seahawks. This year, the team has a target on their back as they attempt to repeat as NFL champions. But don’t worry, last year’s Super Bowl champs were the youngest team ever to win a title. At an average of 26 years and 162 days old at the time of the game, the Hawks appear

Despite beginning just his third year in the pros, Wilson has emerged as the team’s leader on the offensive side of the ball. Already, the young quarterback is breaking records and the sky appears to be the limit for him and the Seahawks. At just 25 years and 65 days old, Wilson became the third-youngest starter ever to win a Super Bowl and his 28 total victories are the most in NFL history to begin a career. five postseason starts. And if things get a little hairy off the bat? No problem for Wilson, who is already building a reputation as a comeback kid, thanks to four - count them FOUR - fourth-quarter comebacks last season, including two on the road. In just two seasons as the Seahawks starting quarterback, Wilson has led 10 fourth-quarter comebacks, ranking second-most ever for a quarterback in their his two seasons. But it’s not just Wilson that opposing defenses will need to worry about. Taking the ball from Wilson this season will once again be Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch, who set a career-high in 2013 with 14 total touchdowns. Lynch is the only player in the NFL to score 10 rushing touchdowns and rack up more than 1,000 yards in each of the past three seasons. Lynch also leads the NFL with 19 100yard games since 2011 and in that time he also leads the league with 39 total touchdowns (35 rushing, four receiving). But like last year, the Seattle Seahawks look to be led by their top-ranked defense and the world-famous Legion of Boom secondary corps, headed by all-pro Richard Sherman. Sherman, whose last-second tip in the NFC Championship game put the Seahawks in the Super Bowl, is looking to improve on his league-leading eight interceptions, four of which came in his last three games. Sherman also led the team with 19 passes defensed. His 20 interceptions and 60 passes defensed since 2011 lead the NFL and earned Sherman a big, new long-term contract in Seattle during the offseason. Sherman wasn’t the only member of the Legion to re-sign in the offseason. Safety

Earl Thomas, another Pro-Bowler who had a career-high tying five picks in 2013 and a career-high 100 tackles, also signed a new, four-year contract and continues to patrol the backfield at CenturyLink Field for the foreseeable future. The Legion’s other two members are also locked up for at least this year. Safety Kam Chancellor, described as “the hardest hitting safety in the NFL at 6’3” and 232 pounds,” signed a four-year extension in 2013. He had nine tackles and an interception in last year’s Super Bowl. The fourth member of the Legion, Byron Maxwell, is headed into his fourth professional season and second as a starter. Maxwell forced a fumble in the third quarter of the Super Bowl, recovered by Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith, effectively ending the Broncos chances of coming back. Smith, also entering his fourth season as

a linebacker with the Seahawks, is also back for more this year. All together, the Legion of Boom was the NFL’s top-ranked passing defense last year as they allowed only 172 yards per game and led the Seahawks to an NFL-best 28 interceptions last year. In total, the Seahawks defense dominated the NFL last season and gave up 231 points all of last season, an average of 14.4 per game, to lead the NFL. The Seahawks also led the league with a +20 turnover differential as the defense forced a leagueleading 39 turnovers while the offense only coughed it up 19 times. On the defensive line, Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril led the team in sacks, 8.5 and 8, respectively, adding to the Seahawks overall total off 44, good enough for eighthbest in the NFL. But beyond the players on the field,

the Seahawks secret weapon is, of course, the 12th Man, the fans who last year set multiple records for crowd noise and whose support means that every game at CenturyLink Field this season is already sold out. Thanks in part to the fans, Seattle won all but one game last year after going undefeated the year before at the CLink. In the past two seasons, Seattle’s point differential at home is +271 with a +25 turnover margin. In addition, since 2005, the Seattle Seahawks lead the league in opponent false start penalties with 132 in 72 games. All together, the team and fans had a great ride last season, from training camp in Renton through an opening day win in Carolina to Sherman’s NFC Championshipsaving deflection to the amazing victory parade in February. And boy does that trophy look good here in Seattle. Let’s do it again.

Plenty of superlatives for the Hawks after a good minicamp BY EVERETT HERALD STAFF

As the dust settles on the offseason and teams get ready for the start of the 2014 campaign, the Seattle Seahawks are among the teams sizing up their new personnel headed into the season. With the conclusion of last month’s three-day minicamp, the Seahawks wrapped up a month of offseason workouts that kicked off preparation for what they hope will be a successful Super Bowl title defense. Players then scattered around the country and were on their own for five weeks, but as they all reconvene in Renton for the start of training camp, let’s look back at the past month of organized team activities and minicamps. Call it our offseason superlatives. One disclaimer before we dive into this. I focused almost entirely on young, up-and-coming players for this column. You don’t need me telling you that Earl Thomas, one of the best defensive players in the NFL, looked good in minicamp. Nor is it worth worrying about the multiple interceptions Russell Wilson threw in the last couple days of workouts — he’ll be fine. Instead, let’s look at the players who made an impression during the past month. Most impressive rookie — WR Kevin Norwood. Paul Richardson, the receiver Seattle picked two rounds ahead of Norwood, has the wow factor; defensive end Cassius Marsh was incredibly impressive in limited action; and tackle Justin Britt has arguably the best shot of earning a starting job as a rookie, but Norwood is my choice here because he was the most consistent performer. Receiver is one of the tougher positions for a rookie to adjust to, and when you factor in Seattle’s secondary, excelling in practice

injuries as their redshirt class, and those players are a big reason Carroll thinks his 2014 team can be every bit as good as the Super Bowl champion squad despite losing a number of key players. There are several good choices for this one, from linebacker Korey Toomer to defensive linemen Jesse Williams, Jordan Hill and Greg Scruggs. But the player who might have made the best impression out of the “redshirt class” was cornerback Tharold Simon, who came into this offseason as a complete unknown. Simon barely took the field in rookie minicamp last year before a foot injury sidelined him, and he never practiced again with the Seahawks in 2013. Yet throughout OTAs and minicamp, the 6-foot-3 Simon looked every bit like a player who fits right in with the rest of Seattle’s talented, rangy defensive backs. In particular, Simon, a fifth-round pick last year, was the star of an OTA session in which Richard Sherman took a day off, coming up with two interceptions while playing with the first-team defense. While passing Bryon Maxwell on the depth chart for a starting job seems unlikely, Simon looks like a very strong option as a backup to Sherman and Maxwell, and a viable starting option down the road (Maxwell is a free [ more SUPERLATIVES page S7 ]

The road to repeat Seattle SeahAwks 2014 schedule

Week 1, Sept. 4 (Thursday) Green Bay Packers (2013 Record: 8-7-1; first place NFC North)

Week 12, Nov. 23 Arizona Cardinals (2013 Record: 10-6; third place NFC West)

The Green Bay Packers return to CenturyLink Field for the first time since the Seahawks defeated the Pack 14-12 in a controversial Monday Night Game during the 2012 season in which Russell Wilson threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate on the final play of the game. Last year the Packers saw their season come to an end with an NFC Wild Card game loss to San Francisco.

The Cardinals may have a 16-14 series advantage with the Seahawks, but Seattle has a 9-7 edge on games played in Seattle, including an 8-4 record at the stadium now known as CenturyLink Field. Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will lead Arizona against Richard Sherman and the Seahawks. Sherman has six interceptions in five starts against Fitzgerald.

Week 2, Sept. 14 at San Diego Chargers (2013 Record: 9-7; third place AFC West) The Seahawks beat the Chargers 27-20 in Seattle during their last meeting in 2010. In that game, Leon Washington set a Seahawks record by returning kickoffs 101 and 99 yards. The Seahawks have won 11 of 14 meetings against San Diego.

Week 3, Sept. 21 Denver Broncos (2013 Record: 13-3; first place AFC West) The Seahawks welcome the Denver Broncos to CenturyLink Field in a muchanticipated rematch of Super Bowl XXVIII, which Seattle won 43-8. The Broncos are led by Peyton Manning who set an NFL record last year for touchdowns. During the offseason the Broncos solidified their defense.

Week 5, Oct. 6 (Monday) at Washington Redskins (2013 Record: 3-13; fourth place NFC East) After a disappointing 2013 campaign, the Redskins are looking to rebound this season. Washington has won the last six regular season games against the Seahawks, but Seattle has a three-game winning streak in the post-season, including a 24-14 victory in 2012.

Week 6, Oct. 12 Dallas Cowboys (2013 Record: 8-8; second place NFC East) In their last meeting, during week 2 of the 2012 season, the Seahawks beat the Cowboys 27-7 at CenturyLink Field. The Cowboys this season are again led by Tony Romo, who has a dismal record at the CLink, including a 2006 playoff loss in which Romo fumbled the snap on a potential game-winning field goal.

Week 7, Oct. 19 at St. Louis Rams (2013 Record: 7-9; fourth place NFC West) The Seahawks are 8-7 at St. Louis, but during week 8 of last season the Rams gave the Hawks quite a scare. Seattle was able to escape with a 14-9 win after cornerback Brandon Browner tipped a fourth-down pass incomplete in the end zone on the last play of the game.

The road back to the Super Bowl will not be an easy one for the defending champs. This season, the Seahawks face the sixth most-difficult schedule of all teams in football. Seahawks opponents posted a .561 winning percentage in 2013. The season gets under way Sept. 4 at home with the ultimate goal of playing in Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1, 2015 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.

Week 8, Oct. 26 at Carolina Panthers (2013 Record: 12-4; first place NFC South) The Seahawks return to the site of their 2013 opening day victory, a 12-7 win over the eventual NFC South Champs. Carolina lost in the Divisional Playoff round to the 49ers. Last season, the Panthers held opponents to just 15.1 points, second behind the Seahawks.

Week 9, Nov. 2 Oakland Raiders (2013 Record: 4-12; fourth place AFC West) The Seahawks have not played their old AFC West rivals since 2010, when the Raiders ran for 239 yards in a 33-3 win over Seattle in Oakland. Since playing in the 2002 Super Bowl, the Raiders have not had a winning season and have started 16 different quarterbacks.

Week 10, Nov. 9 New York Giants (2013 Record: 7-9; third place NFC East) The Giants will be looking to avenge an embarrassing 23-0 loss at home to the Seahawks in week 15. Last season, the Legion of Boom had Quarterback Eli Manningâ€™s number, picking him off five times in that game. The 12th Man will also be looking to repeat their 2005 performance in which the Giants were penalized 11 times for false starts.

Week 11, Nov. 16 Kansas City Chiefs (2013 Record: 11-5; second place AFC West) Under new Head Coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs went out to the hottest start in football last season before struggling through the second half. The last time the Seahawks played the Chiefs, back in 2010, Kansas City played to a 42-24 victory. Leading rusher Jamaal Charles led the NFL last season with 19 touchdowns.

Week 13, Nov. 27 (Thursday) at San Francisco 49ers (2013 Record: 12-4; second place NFC West) The Seahawks head to Leviâ€™s Stadium for the first of two games in three weeks against their division rivals. The Niners handed the Seahawks a 19-17 loss during a week 14 visit to San Francisco last year. With both teams among the favorites to make the Super Bowl this season, this will be a game to watch and a true test for Seattle.

Week 14, Dec. 7 Philadelphia Eagles (2013 Record: 10-6; first place NFC East) The Philadelphia Eagles finished the year atop the NFC East, but lost to the New Orleans Saints in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. In their last meeting, the Seahawks beat the Eagles 31-14 during a 2011 game in Seattle. The Eagles are led by second-year quarterback Nick Foles and NFL-leading rusher LeSean McCoy.

Week 15, Dec. 14 San Francisco 49ers (2013 Record: 12-4; second place NFC West) In what has become one of the premiere matchups in the NFL, the 49ers return to CenturyLink field for the first time since losing the NFC Championship game on a last-second knockdown in the end zone by Richard Sherman. Though the series is tied at 15-15, the Seahawks have a 9-7 advantage in Seattle.

Week 16, Dec. 21 at Arizona Cardinals (2013 Record: 10-6; third place NFC West) The Seahawks travel to Arizona, where the Cardinals have a 9-5 edge in the series. The last time the teams played in Arizona, week 7 last year, the Seahawks sacked Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer seven times and picked him off twice on their way to a 34-22 win.

Week 17, Dec. 28 St. Louis Rams (2013 Record: 7-9; fourth place NFC West) The Seahawks end their 2014 campaign at home against the division-rival Rams. The Seahawks lead the series 20-11 and are 12-4 in Seattle, including an 11-1 record at their current stadium. Seattle beat the Rams 27-9 in the final week of the season last year to secure home field advantage in the postseason.

agent after this season). Most impressive position group — Linebacker. OK, so the secondary might have been the best group throughout camp (big surprise), but that’s also way too easy of a choice. Instead, we’ll go with linebacker, the overlooked position of the defense last season, and a group that looks poised to make a name for itself in 2014. Seemingly day after day, linebackers were making plays, even with Bruce Irvin and Malcolm Smith sidelined by surgeries. And it wasn’t just the usual suspects like K.J. Wright and Bobby Wagner. Korey Toomer looks like a big-time playmaker if he can only find a way to get on the field. Mike Morgan more than held his own working as the first-team strongside linebacker. Rookie Kevin Pierre-Louis is as athletic as advertised. This is potentially the deepest position group on the roster. “Us as linebackers, we’re really trying to stand out,” Wagner said. “I love the D-line, and the secondary gets a lot of talk, but you will talk about the linebackers this year.” Position group that was a pleasant surprise — Wide Receiver. With Golden Tate leaving in free agency and Sidney Rice recovering from knee surgery, the Seahawks came into offseason workouts with few proven pass catchers beyond Doug Baldwin,

But with Harvin healthy and once again running past everyone, and with rookies Norwood and Richardson showing plenty of potential, this group, despite the loss of last year’s leading receiver, suddenly looks very deep and promising. Or as Baldwin might put it, there is nothing pedestrian about this group. It’s particularly fun to imagine Harvin and Richardson on the field together at the same time with their blazing speed. “It is a really fast group,” Carroll said. “It’s really exciting to see the guys catch the ball well, too … There’s nothing like being fast, that kind of speed, so we’re really excited about it.” However, all of this excitement about the rookie receivers needs to come with one caveat — after quarterback, receiver might be the hardest position for rookies to make the leap from college to the NFL. You could easily find as many if not more glowing reports on Golden Tate in 2010 as there have been about Norwood and Richardson this summer, yet Tate struggled to even get on the field as a rookie. time with Paul McQuistan all year, then the Seahawks decided not to pick up the fifthyear option on the former first-round pick this offseason. So to say Carpenter has a lot to prove in 2014 is something of an understatement, and so far he’s off to a good start. While most were expecting Carpenter to be fighting somebody for a starting spot, offensive line coach Tom Cable has made it pretty clear that the left guard job is Carpenter’s. That likely has a lot to do with Carpenter coming into offseason workouts in the best shape he has been in since Seattle took him with the 25th pick in the 2011 draft. Carpenter still has a long ways to go to live up to that draft status, but if he can build off this encouraging offseason, a position that was a big question mark last year could turn into a strength for Seattle without adding a player. Nice to see you out there — WR Percy Harvin. We knew Harvin got through the Super Bowl healthy, so it was expected that he would be available for offseason workouts. But even if it was expected, Harvin’s presence on the practice field is a very welcome sight for the Seahawks. When Seattle acquired Harvin in 2013, he was something of a luxury acquisition, which was evident in the fact that they got to the Super Bowl with almost no contributions from him because of a hip injury. Detroit and Rice a question mark because of his knee, the Seahawks offense will need to get a lot more out of Harvin in 2014. Still have work left to do — QB Terrelle Pryor and S/CB Eric Pinkins. It’s wildly premature to say anyone is struggling or a bust before training camp has even started, especially players new to the team. However, Pryor and Pinkins are two players who at first glance have some work to do in order to make the 53-man roster. Pryor, a parttime starter in Oakland, has undeniable ability, and he showed considerable growth from the first session of OTAs to last week’s minicamp, but he still has progress to make if he’s going to beat Tavaris Jackson for the backup job or convince the Seahawks that it’s worth keeping three quarterbacks on the roster. Pinkins, a sixth-round pick out of San Diego State, was a safety in college, but the Seahawks said when they picked him that they saw him as a cornerback. It didn’t take long for the Seahawks to move Pinkins back to safety — he was done playing cornerback by the third day of rookie minicamp. As a safety, he was struggling to get reps with the second-team defense. Pinkins has plenty of time to either show he can adjust to cornerback or improve his status on the depth chart at safety, but like Pryor, he will have work to do in camp to earn a roster spot.

Renton is gearing up for the sixth annual Seahawks Training Camp presented by Bing. More than 33,000 fans will flock to Renton’s beautiful Virginia Mason Athletic Center (VMAC) to watch the Seahawks practice for the upcoming season. Throughout the city 12 flags will proudly tout fan spirit, and local businesses, organizations and fans will display Seahawks Training Camp 2014 cheer cards. Fans can download cheer cards from the city’s website at rentonwa.gov. Everyone is being asked to wear blue and green colors and put on their “12” buttons during training camp to show their support.
