Meerkerk Garden open for sale, auto display Peak blooms will still be visible, as Meerkerk Gardens hosts two weekend events this month. The Purple Passion Sale will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Celebrating the purple rhodie varieties guests who wear purple will get a free plant. There will be a wide variety of hybrid, species and heritage rhodies, from 1 gallon to mature 6-to-7-feet tall field grown plants. Shop early for best selection. Entrance to the gardens is free on sales days. Garden spokeswoman Joan Bell said this weekend’s sale is one of four weekend sales of the year. Until the end of June, the nursery will be staff on weekends otherwise customers will need to schedule an appointment or can purchase by honor system. Right now, the garden has many mature rho-

dies for sale, which were willed to the nonprofit. Later in the month, Meerkerk will host a Classic Auto Display 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20. Members of the Whidbey As and Whidbey Cruzers will gather around the gazebo with cars on display. Entry is $5 for adults. Children younger than 16 are free. “We invite anyone with an old car to join us,” Bell said. Meerkerk Rhododendron Gardens, a not-forprofit garden open to the public, encompasses 10 acres of display and educational gardens enveloped by 43 acres of woodland preserve with fourplus miles of nature trails. Friends of Meerkerk memberships, plant sales, admission and contributions combine to care for the Gardens.
