Co. to open in downtown Tacoma (Tacoma Daily Index, May 27, 2015) — Dunagan Brewing Co. is expected to open this summer in downtown Tacoma. The storefront, located at 1126 Commerce St., was previously occupied by Shanghai House, a Chinese restaurant, and Tacoma Cross, a medicinal marijuana shop. "Our microbrewery is planned this year for an early August opening," owner Jesse Dunagan told the Tacoma Daily Index last month. "We're actually all local Tacoma boys here and have moved back home to serve our community. Things are still at the foundation laying stage and we'll have some more updates soon." Downtown Tacoma already includes several local breweries, such as Harmon Brewing Co., Pacific Brewing & Malting Co., Wingman Brewers, Tacoma Brewing Co., and Odd Otter Brewing Company. 4. Surplus Lincoln District street lamps could fund neighborhood improvement projects (Tacoma Daily Index, May 7, 2015) — Dozens of decommissioned ornamental and iconic street lamps that once illuminated the sidewalks and streets in Tacoma's busy Lincoln International Business District could soon serve the neighborhood once again. In March, the City spent approximately $125,000 to replace 31 ornamental street lights (as well as 20 standard street lights) with new and similarlooking light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs. The old fixtures were repackaged in boxes that were used to ship the new light fixtures, and offered up by the City in April. Last month, an ad hoc steering committee partnered with Safe Streets to claim the surplus street lamps in the hope of eventually auctioning them off to raise money to help pay for improvement projects in the neighborhood. "We just thought it would be a great communitybuilding project, something we could do together," steering committee member Leslie Young told the Tacoma Daily Index in May. It's still unclear the types of projects the old, sun-faded street lamps could pay for, but some ideas include wayfinding signage, banners promoting the neighborhood during street events, or a community kiosk and bulletin board, according to Young. "The main purpose for this, in my eyes, is that it's a fun, communitybased project," said Young. "Raising money is great. But that is only a small portion of it." 5. Tacoma Dome District: Renovation turns former Nalley plant into charter high school (Tacoma Daily Index, May 20, 2015) — In May, the Tacoma Daily Index toured the ongoing renovation of an 85-year-old building in Tacoma's Dome District that will soon be a new charter high school. For more than 20 years, the brick and terra cotta building, located at 409 Puyallup Ave., served as the headquarters for Nalley's Pure Food Products. According to the Tacoma Public Library's Northwest Room, the company broke ground on the building in September of 1928, and opened for business in February of 1930. In 1953, the building was sold to the Salvation Army after Nalley's relocated its pickle manufacturing operations to South Tacoma Way and the Nalley Valley. The Salvation Army operated out of the building for nearly 45 years before it closed the site in 1998. Los Angeles, Calif.-based Pacific Charter School Development purchased the building for approximately $2 million in August and plans to spend approximately $5 million on the renovation. When completed this fall, the three-story, 35,000-square-foot building will be home to Summit Public School's Olympus campus.
