Steve Fields is challenging John Marchione in the upcoming City of Redmond mayoral election. Marchione will be seeking his third term in the Nov. 3 general election. Fields, a 62-year-old Redmond resident, told the Reporter that he is choosing to run because he has seen a lot of Steve Fields changes in the city and is concerned with the use of city money and how it is being managed. He added that Redmond is starting to become too costly to live here, and if elected mayor, Fields said he wants to maintain the city’s livability as it grows. “I love Redmond,” Fields said, adding that the city has been a great place for him and his family to live. He said it would also be good to bring a new face and perspective into the picture. If elected, Fields said he wants the city government to be more effective and inclusive [ more FIELDS page 3 ]
As Danu Sherpa spoke on the other end of the phone line from Kathmandu, Nepal, his voice wavered. His emotions were taking over. On Tuesday, Sherpa said he was looking around at the city and the crippled buildings that were rocked and leveled by a pair of mammoth earthquakes in the last month. The 44-year-old City of Redmond employee paused and noted: “I was lucky to survive.” Sherpa’s voice trailed off when he mentioned that his family’s house was destroyed in one of the tremblors. His sister, his niece and two orphan children were killed and two others were injured. “For awhile, I was very devastated and depressed,” said Sherpa, who added that he’s dealing with his emotions by helping others. Sherpa returned to his home country about three weeks ago to help in the relief efforts for his large family and residents whose homes were destroyed by the quakes and are in need of shelter, water, food, clothing, blankets and more. He has helped set up tents not far from the rubble for people to try and get some much-needed rest.

Sherpa was inside the building when it partially collapsed, and the experience lingers with him each day while he attends to others’ needs. (The first quake — 7.8 magnitude — hit on April 25 and there was a 6.7-magnitude aftershock on April 26. To date, more than 8,000 people have been killed and more than 21,000 have been injured, ac-
cording to various news reports.) “It’s a very devastating situation right now. It’s hard to leave. There’s so much to do,” said Sherpa, who plans to stay in Nepal for another month or so. “I’m trying to do my best. I’m trying to get people back to a comfortable living situation before I leave.” He said people are scared as smallerscale quakes (3.5- and 4.5-magnitude) hit the city each day. Motorcyclist in critical condition after collision A 28-year-old Kirkland man was in critical condition at press time after being ejected from his motorcycle and sustaining head injuries on Bear Creek Parkway in Redmond on Tuesday evening. in a possible road-rage incident in the downtown Redmond area. The officer attempted to stop the motorcycle, but the suspect fled at a high rate of speed and the officer didn’t follow. Minutes later, RPD received several 911 calls reporting a motorcycle-versus-car collision on Bear Creek Parkway. Officers responded and observed a motorcycle off the roadway in the grass. Several witnesses reported seeing the motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the collision. The motorcycle was the same one observed by the officer earlier. According to his resume, he has also worked as a strategic adviser/business analyst for the City of Seattle. He has also held a number of positions with King County, including business and finance manager for the Public Health Department, project manager for the Department of Executive Services and budget manager for the Office of Management and Budget. According to the press release, Fields is a government efficiency guru who designs and implements systems to bring public budgets under control, making them more transparent and understandable for the citizens they are meant to benefit.
During his “Field campaign,” he will meet with voters on their doorsteps. “I’m ready to listen, something that’s become a lost political art,” he said in the press release. “I’m also ready to hear new ideas and build community engagement that’s real, not contrived meetings and overused ribbon-cutting ceremonies that lack spirit and authenticity.” Fields is married to his coffee shop partner, Ronni Fields, and has lived in Redmond for almost 25 years. He has three children and is a local sports, tennis and health advocate and coached basketball, baseball and soccer in Redmond’s recreation leagues.
To give Sherpa a hand on his mission to assist his family and others in Nepal, Eric O’Neal — who has worked with Sherpa in the City of Redmond’s Parks Department for about 15 years — started a GoFundMe page just over three weeks ago that has generated $13,800 in funds from 145 people at press time. O’Neal has sent nearly all of the funds,
to include more citizen input as they have a stake in what happens in town. “The current mayor talks about the importance of city government living within its means. But are city leaders making decisions that would allow small businesses, retirees and working families to live within their means?” he said in a press release. He added that parks and recreational facilities are deteriorating, and neighborhoods are being ignored while the city focuses its investment on downtown changes. Currently, Fields is co-owner of Down Pour Coffee Bar in Redmond.

City celebrates completion of relocated and restored lower Bear Creek

The City of Redmond celebrated the completion of the newly relocated and restored lower Bear Creek with a ribbon cutting on May 14. The project, located between SR 520 and Bear Creek Parkway, behind Redmond Town Center, relocated about 3,000 feet of Bear Creek from the mostly straight, channelized “stream” to a meandering, reshaped and re-planted channel, in an existing adjacent open space. The creek now supports healthy and diverse fish runs as well as habitats, including the largest wild Chi-

The parallel path and “side-routes” allow people to walk over to the stream and to view and interact with a much improved Bear Creek. “This collaboration between the city and state emphasizes how proactively addressing our regional transportation challenges and improving our environment can move us forward together,” said Mayor John Marchione. “Relocating and restoring this portion of Bear
Creek into a productive salmon-bearing stream continues the city’s commitment to protect and improve our environment.” The restoration was not only a unique and interesting partnership between the City of Redmond and the WSDOT, but area tribes, as well, according to Lisa Rhodes, City of Redmond communications manager. During restoration, a unique archaeology site was discovered and the city worked closely with area tribes to preserve much of the site while recovering many artifacts for academic studies, Rhodes added. The result is a greatly improved habitat for the largest population of Chinook salmon in the Sammamish population.

Take time to remember why we have Memorial Day
T
his Memorial Day, there will be honor guards snapping to attention as flags ripple in the breeze. Amidst the green lawn and bright flowers of cemeteries throughout the state, lone buglers and mournful pipers will evoke a heartfelt tear. On Monday, I hope we can all shut off our SmartPhones and pause from our barbecues and picnics and our busy lives. That we can take a moment to remember those who served in the military who gave their precious lives for our nation, for our way of life and for our freedom. Whether they died a century ago, or just last week, their sacrifice renews itself every single day as we who probably never knew them, go about our daily lives, as we work, play, raise our families and build our communities. For the men and women who fell in World War I or II, in Korea, Vietnam, the Middle East or anywhere else – be they William Shaw

Surprised at poll results about Redmond City Council members I happened to read the answer to your “Question of the week” from your May 15 edition: “Are Redmond’s City Council members doing a good job?” The answer to the poll was Yes: 36.8% No: 63.2%. Thank you for the poll. I found it timely with your excellent reporting done on the City Council and mayor in the same edition. It was also an eye-opener. I was surprised that nearly two thirds of those polled felt Redmond City Council members were not doing a good job. That is a significant number of people! So how does one think the council could do better? Re-look at the city’s growth policy? Are we growing too fast? Establish greater efficiencies within the government? Should council have to ask us for more levy money? Pay more attention to neighborhood issues? Is council over-involved in regional issues? City Council follows Mayor John Marchione in lock-step. Should they be more outspoken? Which leads me to my second point. I just found out Mayor Marchione’s office is being contested by a credentialed, qualified candidate by the name of Steve Fields. He has had the chance to see King County and City of Seattle operations from all perspectives in his government work and now he runs Down Pour Coffee Bar caddy corner from Tech City Bowl on 132nd Avenue Northeast.

Chicas for Change set for water walk We are the Chicas for Change, a group of sophomores from Redmond High School who are working together to help change our community and the world, one step at a time. We are sponsoring a water walk to raise awareness about the importance of access to clean water in developing countries. In the United States, we are fortunate to have access to water in our homes, but more than one in nine people in the world don’t have access to clean water, that is more than 780 million people! Collecting water for their families as a daily chore is one of the primary reasons girls in developing countries do not get an education. We want to change that, so to raise awareness we are asking individuals, teams and community groups to participate in our water walk from 4-7 p.m. on May 30. The walk will also be featured on the national news this summer. We encourage teams, groups and individuals to participate by walking around the Redmond High School track with water containers on their head. Prizes will be given for the largest team participation, most laps walked individually and as a team. And don’t forget, the news crews will be there filming all the action. Please join us to help drive awareness for this important global issue.

Response to letter regarding Islam In last week’s Letters to the Editor section, Mr. Usama Ahmed referred to the attack by two Muslims on the Texas “free speech event” and stated, “Islam has never permitted vio-
lence in response to blasphemy.” However, we read about both Muslims and non-Muslims being punished weekly for the crime of blasphemy. Blasphemy in Islam is any disrespectful act or statement about Allah, Muhammad or anything considered sacred in Islam. Islamic scholars hold that punishment for blasphemers is supported in the Qur’an by verses 5:33 and 33:57-61. According to the principles of Islam, Muslims are to follow the example of Muhammad. One of the most respected authors of true stories about Muhammad is Sahil al-Bukhari, and he reports that a man (Ka’b ibn al-Ashraf ) insulted Muhammad, so Muhammad called for his murder. Furthermore, Muhammad said that no punishment will befall the person who murders anyone who disparages, abuses or insults Muhammad. In fact, ever since approximately 1,100 A.D., a consensus developed among Islamic scholars that anyone who insults the prophet must be put to death. Today, Muslim nations that abide by Islamic law (Shariah) continue to penalize blasphemy by imposing punishments that run from beatings to the death penalty, and we read about these almost every day. For examples, consider Salman Rushdie, the British novelist, who is under the threat of death from a fatwa calling for his assassination by Ayatollah Khomeini, or consider Seattle’s Molly Norris, who is in hiding after she was the subject of a fatwa for depicting the likeness of Muhammad in a cartoon. Therefore, I conclude that not only does Islam allow violence for the act of blasphemy, but it is demanded by the writings of the Hadith and Shariah law of many Islamic countries.

The man said he was using it anyway; he said he was then assaulted by staff in the business. Workers deny assaulting the man, stating he has been contacted before for similar behavior. Redmond will have water despite drought

Although Gov. Jay Inslee declared a statewide drought emergency, the City of Redmond will have water for normal activities this year. As a member of the Cascade Water Alliance, Redmond receives most of its water from the Seattle water supply system, which has sufficient resources. “We don’t anticipate any lack of water supply for the City of Redmond this summer. Redmond citizens continue to focus on conserving and maintaining wise use of water,” stated Mayor John Marchione, board chair of Cascade Water Alliance. Redmond residents with an interest in the future growth and character of the city are invited to apply for an upcoming vacancy on the Redmond Planning Commission. Planning commissioners are appointed by the mayor, confirmed by the City Council and may serve up to two four-year terms. All board and commission members are volunteers. The commission’s role is to make recommendations to the City Council regarding proposed amendments to Redmond’s Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Code. This coming year, the commission will work on updates to development regulations

A male suspect was arrested for allegedly wielding a large saw blade and chasing after people on May 16 in the 5100 block of 148th Avenue Northeast, according to Redmond police. Officers arrived on the scene at about 3:39 p.m.
and located a subject matching the description given and possessing the blade. It was reported that the man chased two subjects with the blade, and they were able to run away without injury. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and he apologized for his behavior, stating he needed to go back to the penitentiary and this was how he could go back to prison. He was arrested for second-degree assault and booked into jail.

Also from Overlake, senior Tucker Lutz and junior Mihir Velagapudi each scored 103 and missed the cut by five strokes. Sirosh notched his second straight 1A Emerald City League boys golf title. Overlake junior Lizzie Riffle qualified for her first state tournament by scoring 105 and grabbing the final berth to next week’s state tournament. Benjamin Lee took first in both the 110-meter hurdles (16.1) and 300-meter hurdles (42.8). Luke Poling placed fifth in the 1,600-meter run (4:58.0) and took third in the 200-meter run (25.5) less than 20 minutes after finishing second in the 800-meter (PR of 2:06.6). Sean Gallagher finished fifth in the 3,200 meters (11:26.5) with his season’s best run. Darryln McDonough finished sixth in the 100 (13.8) and fourth in the 200 (28.0).

Finding friends in Redmond and on the backroads of Washington
Recently, a friend (Harvey Sherman with the Aurora) informed me of a group of people who enjoy a good drive, the Northwest Drivers group on Meetup, regardless of what is driven. So I decided to check it out. The founder of the Northwest Drivers group, Marko “Wolf ” Wollschlaeger, had been part of the Jaguar and Porsche owners clubs in the area, but found that they weren’t too much into driving. “So I was like, I’m going to found my own thing so that anybody can join. The main purpose was any brand or make, it doesn’t matter what you drive,” said Wollschlaeger, owner of a 2014 Porsche Boxter S. Two years later, the group has more than 200 members — 40 or so of which showed up for the drive on May 16,
Prior to the May 16 morning’s drive, owners lined their cars up at the QFC on Redmond Ridge for a meet and greet. DEANNA ISAACS, Reporter Newspapers which started and finished in Redmond and covered backroads from Redmond around the south side of the Snohomish Valley to Everett. The drive started at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of a QFC on Redmond Ridge. So, I got up early (for me), put caffeine in my belly and headed out in the Acura TLX I’m reviewing. Arriving with several minutes to spare, I pull the TLX into a space next to a Porsche and, I’ll be honest,
there seem to be doubters about my choice of car — me included. I hopped out of the sport sedan and started schmoozing with the owners of Nissan GTRs, Fiat 500 Abarths, a ’90 Miata from the Miata Club where I purchased my own MX-5, and more. There was a car for everyone, or near enough that it makes no difference. Around 40 people showed up, one duo coming from as far away as Port Angeles, to come and drive with
other car enthusiasts on nice roads. “We don’t really have too many people into car culture out there, so when I found this group online, I thought it would be a fun trip out to Seattle,” said Dallas Derma, who drove his 1999 BMW 328i from Port Angeles. “I was pretty surprised. I was just really surprised how many cars there were.” Derma came out with his car-loving buddy, Brandon Meyers; both are 16-year-
old high school students. “I’ve never seen this many cars like this in one area, usually the car shows in Port Angeles have one or two really nice looking cars, but this is really good,” Meyers said. What a great way to start the weekend. After a quick drivers’ meeting, the group of around 40 was split up into three driving classes: Cruise, Normal and Spirited groups. Now, that’s not by car, but by how a driver wishes to
drive; cruisers were out for a leisurely drive, normal drivers were out for something quicker than leisurely, and spirited drivers were out to have a little bit of fun on the upcoming curves. I stepped out on a limb and chose the spirited class. I figured, “Hey, I’ve got a V6 AWD Acura with ‘Sport+’ mode. Let’s do this!” complete with a mind-sized Joe Swanson from “Family Guy.” [ more CARS page 14 ]

I couldn’t have chosen better. Also in the Sport speed group was a Mitsubishi Lancer, a VW Golf R32, an Audi S5, the first Porsche, a Nissan GTR, two Honda S2000s, a Lotus Elise, another Porsche (targa), an Aston Martin Vantage, a Corvette, the Acura, and behind me a Porsche Cayman S. What a train of cars to be among! “I love to do the drives… I love meeting new people and driving my car,” said Joe Macri, 2009 Porsche Cayman S (driving behind me). “...A little spirited, (but) I’ll come back. I thought it was really fun and, going with a lot of people and meeting new people is really fun too.” The drive was sporty and fun. People were safe; not taking things too quickly, but still at a very nice pace. “We’re a bunch of guys (and gals) trying to have a good time, trying to be safe,” Wollschlaeger said. Brakes would be applied into the corners and then, upon exit, a chorus of climbing rpms rose to the sky. On the hairpin corners, taken at an unbelievably careful pace given the powerhouses under some hoods (complement, not complaint), the reward was a cacophony of engines, their vocals resounding in my heart.
The Aston Martin Vantage’s belting out a monstrous growl, the Lotus Elise pouring a highpitched scream into the air and the Acura TLX’s V6 giving me a smile at every gas pedal tap. It may not have had the same tone as those around it, but it was still a blast to hear (and drive). It sounded glorious. The other cars sounded glorious. The roads were glorious. All around glorious. So glorious, that I wished it was longer. Luckily for me, and all the other enthusiasts out there, this isn’t the only time they meet. The Northwest Drivers group is open to all people with all makes of vehicles — cars, trucks, whatever your flavor of wheels — and only requires
