City facts
With nearly 55,000 residents, Redmond is the 18th-largest city in Washington and is known for being home to Microsoft Corp. and having a healthy economic base, a high quality of life and quality schools. Geographically, the city comprises more than 16 square miles between Woodinville to the north, Kirkland to the west, Bellevue to the south and Sammamish to the east. Settled in the late 1870s by Irish immigrant Luke McRedmond and New England transplants William and Laura Perrigo, the town incorporated in 1912 with 300 residents. Many descendants of these and other early families of Redmond still live in the area. While it maintains a proud history, Redmond is also known for some of its more recent residents, including Nintendo of America, Medtronic, the popular Redmond Town Center and a

Redmond has a strong mayor/council, non-partisan form of government. Seven council members and the mayor, all representing the community at large, are each elected directly by the people for staggered four-year terms. The City Council meets for business meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The alternate Tuesdays are council study sessions. All meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. in the Redmond City Hall Council Chambers.

Celebrating 75 years of community pride, Redmond’s summer festival is July 11-12 at the Redmond city Hall Campus, 15670 N.E. 85th St. The tradition began at the end of the Great Depression with amateur bike races around Lake Sammamish to raise money for downtown holiday decorations and school athletic equipment. This year’s festival features a Happy 75th birthday theme for the Kids Parade and Grand Parade, the Derby Dash 5K run/walk to raise money for pancreatic cancer, fire department pancake breakfast and the Criterium, the country’s longestrunning bike race. New this year are birthday cake and watermelon eating contests, 75-yard community participation fun races to highlight the event’s historical
tradition, a Street Scramble and interactive family game booths. Fireworks, beer and wine garden, food featuring Redmond restaurants, carnival and stage entertainment are sure to please all ages and interests. For more information, visit www.RedmondDerbyDays.com.

A community celebration of light that honors the winter traditions of Redmond’s diverse population, Redmond Lights is Dec. 5 at City Hall Campus. The Redmond Police Department just wrapped up our Spring Citizen’s Academy with 25 students attending nine evenings of classes. The highlights for the graduates included; mock traffic scenes, a field trip to the King County Medical Examiner’s office, processing a mock crime scene and hearing presentations from many amazing and professional Redmond police officers on the many different duties they perform. We plan to run our academy every spring and likely will extend it to 12 sessions in 2016. More information will be posted on www. redmond.gov/PoliceCitizenAcademy.

Old Fire House: teens’ home away from home
“The Old Fire House (OFH) is a nurturing and encouraging place that has challenged me to share my ideas for the community, and provides leadership opportunities. You really get out of it what you put into it. There are opportunities for continual achievement, which colleges and employers love to see,” said Seb C., graduate of Redmond High School class of 2013. Since opening in 1992, the OFH has provided a safe, supervised community space where high school-aged teens in 9th-12th grades can interact, share their musical talent and explore their interests. Activities are often planned and led by teens such as cultural celebrations, game nights, ice-cream making, chem study, dance for beginners, drama costuming, bratwurst and 3-on-3 basketball.

On Friday nights, teens showcase their talents — from drama and music, to comedy and open mics. Other programs at OFH are skateboarding instruction for coeds and girls only, movie making, improv studio, filmmaking, home recording and graffiti art studios. Some of the most popular activities are partnerships that have grown over the years, including Pacific Science Center’s Teen Science Cafes, cooking with Whole Foods Market, Jet City Improv and Redmond High School DECA club. Teen programs also offer a youth leadership program, Redmond Youth Partnership Advisory Committee (RYPAC). RYPAC helps youth gain skills while serving the community. The RSC is part of the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, located at 8703 160th Ave. N.E. on Redmond’s municipal campus with plenty of convenient parking. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Fridays. The RSC daytime programs and activities primarily serve individuals age 50 or better, all evening classes and activities are for adults ages 18 and older. The RSC has a dedicated team of volunteer who lead programs, greet participants, help with general office duties and prepare daily meals. Activities and services at the center include: • Free interest groups such as card games, pickleball, Scrabble, art studio, music, driftwood sculpture, walking club, writing and tennis. • Fee-based classes and life-long learning topics including watercolor, photography, ballroom and tap dance, strength and cardio fitness, yoga and fly-fishing. • Day trips to concerts, plays, exhibits, restaurants, casinos and overnight travel trips. • Adventure trips for hikers of all abilities. • Special events such as Table Tennis Tournament, dancing to swing big band

Arts festival on tap at Redmond Town Center The Redmond Arts Festival will take place July 10-12 at Redmond Town Center. Times will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The juried arts fair will feature more than 70 talented artists along Northeast 74th Street showcasing and selling their work.
