A new kind of paddling takes off BY NATALIE MARTIN

hether it’s sunny and warm or cool and drizzly, Reed Nichelson can often be found on the waters around Vashon, standing on a board and paddling. One afternoon last March, he took a few friends out to paddleboard in Quartermaster Harbor. “It was a lot of fun,” said Cindy Nelson, who tried paddleboarding for the first time that day. “I did fall a few times, but it was easier to balance than I thought it would be.” As stand-up paddleboarding becomes increasingly popular, Vashon, too, has more opportunities to stand and paddle. Vashon Watersports will open for the season this spring with a fleet of a dozen paddleboards at its rental center on the Burton Peninsula, and Nichelson has a new small business dedicated to the sport. Called Fat Cat Paddleboarding, the startup business offers mobile paddleboard rentals, meaning Nichelson will launch boards at inner Quartermaster Harbor, where he lives nearby, or anywhere else Certified Residential Specialist

someone may want to paddle. A certified instructor in the sport, he also offers paddleboarding classes, paddlebaord yoga, guided tours and overnight trips. “The sport is so new that people are finding new opportunities to get out on paddleboards,” Nichelson said. Stand-up paddleboarding originated decades ago in Hawaii when surfers began to stand or kneel on their boards and propel themselves with one paddle, sometimes catching waves in the process. The new sport made its way to the mainland United

States, and now most surf shops and kayak retailers in the Puget Sound area offer paddleboards as well. In recent years the trend has reached the quiet shores of Vashon, and on calm days paddlers — sometimes clad in wetsuits and sometimes in no more than a bathing suit — can often be seen at KVI Beach, Tramp Harbor and Quartermaster Harbor. “We’ve seen a pretty good increase in people’s interest in paddleboards,” said Doug Kieper of Vashon Watersports. When Kieper and his wife purchased

paddleboarding the kayak rental business from the Vashon Park District in 2013, it had just two paddleboards in its collection. Now Vashon Watersports offers 12 paddleboards in addition to its 30 kayaks and two canoes. Kieper added that paddleboarding is especially popular when it’s warm and that many like to go out on the water in groups. “When people come to paddleboard, they paddleboard in a half-dozen,” he said. Nichelson took up paddleboarding a couple of years ago in a quest to find more activities he could do on Vashon. An outdoors lover and avid mountain biker, he biked in Dockton Forest but often found himself leaving the island and driving long distances in search of outdoor fun. He was also looking for an activity he could do as he aged. He tried kayaking, he said, but found it was hard on his back. “Paddleboarding is something I can do forever,” he said. “It’s something you can be as young or as old as you want.” Now Nichelson, an energetic 56-yearold, says paddleboarding has opened up a new world for him. He loves being out on the water, and he calls paddling a full-body workout.

“If you don’t like going to the gym to work out, get on a paddleboard,” he said. On his board, he’s seen plenty of sea life, including a giant octopus in Quartermaster Harbor, and he frequently hops off to swim through kelp beds. He calls the vantage point on a board completely different than a kayak.

“It’s only a few feet, but you’re standing up on top of the water and you can see more,” he said. One time he was paddling off Point Robinson when a pod of orcas went by. “All you could hear was breathing,” he said. “It was just me and them, and the sound was fantastic.” Recently Nichelson has taken up more extreme forms of the sport, joining a small group of islanders that goes out during windy weather to surf waves on paddleboards. The so-called downwinders can be found on the water during some of the worst storms. “There are a few crazies who do it,” he said. “The bigger the wind, the better.” For the more casual recreation seeker, Nichelson said he hopes to change the misconception that paddlebaording is only a warm-weather activity. On cool days, he noted, wetsuits keep paddlers plenty warm. “I just tell (people) come on out, get in a wetsuit, and I’ll prove it,” he said. — Natalie Martin is the editor of The Beachcomber.

Beyond typical paddling excursions, Vashon Watersports offers kayaking classes, camps, moonlight paddles and trips led by a naturalist. The business also offers the opportunity for groups to circumnavigate Vashon by kayak and camp along the way — on their own or fully supported. If they choose the latter option, Vashon Watersports will provide kayakers with catered meals and tents that have already been pitched when the paddlers arrive at their campsite.

Pods J, K and L — about 90 whales — spend the warmer months in northern Puget Sound and Whales intheallPacific Ocean. But periodically during the fall and winter — and occasionally at other times — they venture south to Vashon, feeding on salmon and providing a spectacle for those lucky enough to see them. The show is greatest when the whales pass Point Robinson, where they often come close to shore and can be seen splashing and breaching. The point has even been named as a site on the Whale Trail, a list of the best whale watching spots in the region. Whale sightings aren’t necessarily frequent though, so those wishing to see orcas should be proactive. Citizens often post the whales’ locations to Facebook pages such as VashonAll and Orca Network. And for a small annual fee, Sound Action, a local nonprofit, will send text or email alerts when whales come to Vashon. Sign up at www.soundaction.org. The Vashon Hydrophone Project, a local whale research group, also asks that local whale sightings be reported to them at (206) 463-9041. Don’t forget, however, that the orcas are listed as endangered. Vashon activists promote only shore-based whale watching, and federal law states boats must stay at least 200 yards away from whales.

Take a walk in the woods Vashon is a walker’s paradise. Thanks to the combined efforts of the local land trust, the Vashon Park District and King County, the island is laced with trails, some of which wind for miles through forests. And while popular, they’re often quiet, offering up sweet solitude for those in search of a bit of tranquility.

ISLAND CENTER FOREST Island Center Forest is the largest and most popular expanse of trails on Vashon. Now more than 400 acres in size, it’s a place hikers can go for long walks. The site, owned by King County, was once a working forest. Today, it boasts a warren of trails, two ponds, extensive wetlands and an artful, open-sided shelter for picnics. And, as the name suggests, it’s centrally located. There are several trailheads — two just outside town — and kiosks hold trail maps. How to get there: There are several entrances into the forest, but the one that offers the best parking is off of Vashon Highway. Head south from town, and take a right on SW 188th Street. At the end of the road, turn right to follow a gravel driveway to a large parking lot.

How to get there: The easiest entrance is a trailhead that begins in the parking lot across the road from Dockton Park.

FISHER POND PRESERVE A lovely, half-mile trail circumnavigates Fisher Pond, named for islander Bill Fisher, who donated this 90-acre preserve to the land trust. At the west end, a picnic shelter and table are perched above the water, providing views of this shallow, bird-friendly pond. The land trust has built an additional trail from the east end of the loop, which extends through a lovely forest to Cove Road, and another from the west end, which extends almost to Agren Park. Dogs are not allowed at this preserve.

Like Island Center Forest, these two natural areas are big enough to get lost in. Combined, the two sites — one a former gravel mine — are now more than 400 acres, an expansive forest with a confusing but delightful warren of trails. Hardy walkers who are ready for hills can go from shore to shore at this site — trails lead from Dockton Park on Quartermaster Harbor all the way to the eastern edge of Maury Island on Puget Sound. There, old mining structures can still be seen, and at low tide there’s a nice gravel beach affording a walk along the water.

hiking HIT THE TRAIL Trail maps for some of these preserves are available at the Vashon Park District offices at Ober Park and at the land trust, located at 10014 SW Bank Road. Or download them at www.vashonlandtrust.org. Information and directions can also be found on the park district’s website, www.vashonparks.org. King County also offers excellent maps online. How to get there: Fisher Pond is located on Bank Road, about a mile west of town. Just before reaching the pond, there’s a pullout along the road with room for cars.

SHINGLEMILL CREEK/ FERN COVE Vashon’s newest hiking trail is a delightful twomile traverse that takes hikers along the crest of a ridge, into a tree-studded ravine, across Needle Creek and along the shores of Shinglemill Creek, a salmon-bearing stream that empties into Fern Cove and is Vashon’s second largest creek. At the end of this topographically

diverse trail, cross Cedarhurst Road and pick up the last leg — a final stretch that leads to the expansive mudflats at Fern Cove on Colvos Passage. Bring your binoculars; birds abound here. Those not wishing to make the trek back can leave one car at the Shinglemill trailhead and one car by Fern Cove. How to get there: From town, head north on the highway about two miles; head west on SW 156th Street about a third of a mile. The trailhead is down a driveway on the right side of the road, and there is a small parking lot.

OUTDOORS BURTON ACRES This 64-acre park on the Burton Peninsula offers several lovely trails winding through a mature, diverse forest with towering big-leaf maples, Douglas firs and the occasional Pacific yew. The trails are flat and provide easy walking. How to get there: Take Vashon Highway into Burton and head east onto SW Burton Drive. Turn right at 97th Avenue SW and follow the road to Jensen Point, where parking is available.

CHRISTENSEN POND PRESERVE

THE TRIALS AT MISTY ISLE

A birder’s paradise, this 30-acre preserve on the west side of the island was protected in 2000 with the help of the Vashon Audubon Society. It offers both a small pond and extensive wetlands — a haven for migratory songbirds, waterfowl, owls and hawks. A trail, not quite a mile long, circumnavigates the pond through a pleasant coniferous forest. Dogs are not allowed. How to get there: The preserve is due west of Burton on Wax Orchard Road just south of SW 232nd Street. Look for the small sign that says “nature preserve.”

Hills set the stage for one tough ride BY SUSAN RIEMER

his September, hundreds of bicyclists are expected to take part in what some say is the toughest ride in Puget Sound, Vashon’s Passport to Pain.

The P2P, as the ride is known, covers 80 miles and takes in many of the island’s steepest hills, totaling 10,000 feet of elevation gain, according to Bruce Morser, the ride’s mastermind and one of its organizers. Known as an extremely fit cyclist, Morser makes clear just how difficult the ride is. “This shreds me,” he says. Now in its fifth year, the event continues to grow, and Morser expects it to draw nearly 400 men and women this year. In addition to the 80-mile ride — christened The Idiot — there are shorter options. The Weasel climbs 6,300 vertical feet over 50 miles, and even The Weenie is not for the faint of heart with 3,400 feet of elevation gain over 30 miles. Morser created the ride as a fundraiser for the Vashon Island Rowing Club, of which he is a member, and the result is a ride — not a race — marketed with attitude and a lot of humor. It is also a ride that Morser and others say ranks among the top rides in the region, including the Chilly Hilly and the Ride Around Mount Rainier in One Day (RAMROD). given a passport, which is then stamped at 18 checkpoints along the route. The checkpoints all have themes that might range from paradise, where cyclists can enjoy a tropical fruit snack and receive a lei for the

cycling a few words of advice for those who are considering the ride. â€œTrain, train, train,â€? he said. â€œRide nothing but hills.â€? The number and steepness of the hills make the elevation gain more difficult than sustained long climbs, he explained, and riders have to change in and out of climbing mode both physically and mentally. â€œVashon is a fabulous place to train, but a tough place to ride,â€? he said. For those who think they might be more up for the challenge as part of a team, that is an option, too, either with a group riding the route together or riders sharing the hills and completing the course in relay fashion. One year, nine women from the rowing club â€” representing eight rowers and a coxswain â€” participated as a team. It allowed them to ride two hills each, support the club financially and volunteer at checkpoints, but just two of Vashonâ€™s hills can prove challenging for even the fittest rowers. â€œMy two hills are killing me,â€? Kim Goforth said during training. â€œThere are hills between the hills.â€? Rowing club coach Richard Parr has praised the event, noting that he appreciates it as a fundraiser because it provides

something for everyone. Over the years, he said, P2P funds have helped purchase much-needed equipment for the club, including new rowing shells and oars. â€œThe masters and juniors all train very hard, and we should get them the best equipment. The P2P goes a long way toward making that possible,â€? he said. Currently, the rowing club is working to improve its boathouse, and this yearâ€™s P2P funds will support that effort. Morser noted he thinks the rowing club is a good cause for cyclists to support, particularly for what it offers teen rowers in terms of self esteem and camaraderie. â€œI love what rowing does for kids,â€? he said. â€œIt just rises kids up.â€?

DOCKTON PARK Owned by King County, this 23-acre park doesn’t have much sand, but it’s a favorite on Vashon — especially among teens, who swear the water is the warmest on Vashon. The park has a playground, a grassy lawn, restrooms, a boat launch and a pier. It’s also the beginning of the Dockton Historic Interpretive Trail. Directions: From town, go south on Vashon Highway. Turn left at SW 204th Street. When

it comes to a T at the water’s edge, turn right onto Dockton Road SW. Cross the isthmus to Maury and turn right to stay on Dockton Road until you enter Dockton. The park will be on the right.

KVI BEACH This beach, named for the AM tower that provides not only a radio signal but also a roost site for bald eagles, is a top choice among locals. With an expansive, sandy shoreline and

LISABEULA PARK A quiet, west-facing beach, Lisabeula is the perfect spot for evening sunsets and family picnics. It also boasts a grassy expanse for Frisbee throwing, some picnic tables and portable restrooms. Directions: From town, head south on Vashon Highway. Turn right at SW 204th Street. Turn left on Old Mill Road. Turn right on SW 220th Street. Continue down a winding road until you reach the park.

This 320-acre park, owned by King County, was once a gravel pit. But thanks to an ongoing restoration campaign, the park — an expanse that begins in the woods and ends at the shore — is looking increasingly natural and verdant. It’s a steep half-mile walk from the parking lot to the beach. Directions: From town, head south on Vashon Highway and turn left on SW 204th Street. When it comes to a T, turn right on Dockton Road SW. At a Y in the road, veer left onto SW Point Robinson Road. Take a right onto 59th Avenue SW and a left onto SW 244th Street. Proceed to the end of the road.

THE NORTH END If you happen to be stuck at the north-end ferry dock during a low tide, the beach in front of La Playa Mexican Restaurant is a fun one to explore. Blake Island can be seen directly to the north. Look for sea creatures, especially

beaches under the dock, but be respectful of nearby homes. Directions: Access the beach using the boat ramp on the right side of the north-end ferry dock.

WINGHAVEN PARK This 12-acre park on the north end of the island suggests Vashon’s grand past; it’s the site of a former waterfront estate and still boasts a crumbling balustrade. The quiet beach, located down a quarter-mile trail, offers views of Mount Rainier and sand to walk on at low tide. It’s also a great place to collect beach glass. Directions: From the north-end ferry dock, head south on Vashon Highway. In about a mile, take a left on Cunliffe Road. The park entrance is a half-mile down the hill, down a wooden staircase on the left side.

Get up close with sea creatures Vashon’s Low Tide Celebration at Point Robinson has become a favorite local tradition. It gives everyone a chance to learn more about the region’s rich marine ecology from trained naturalists on a day when the tide is low enough to unveil plants and animals that are seldom seen. It’s also a fun day for kids and families, with booths, food, children’s activities, guided beach walks and a special visit by the Blue Heron Canoe, which typically comes across the water from Des Moines for the occasion. n 1967, Noel â€œGigiâ€? Hake was crowned Miss Vashon and competed in the Miss Washington contest as part of the Miss America Pageant. Wait â€Ś what? Vashon had a Miss Vashon? Yes, indeed. For nearly 50 years, Vashon had a festival queen and Miss Vashon contests as a popular part of the annual Strawberry Festival. Vashonâ€™s annual festival was not always the Strawberry Festival. Over the years, the festivals were called the Island Festival, Peach Festival, Harvest Festival, Vashon Island Festival and, since 1984, the Strawberry Festival. The first festival on Vashon was held in 1900, and in 1909, the first Strawberry Festival was held to celebrate Vashonâ€™s renowned strawberries and plentiful strawberry farms. The 1923 Strawberry Festival renewed the tradition of annual festivals, which had been interrupted by the First World War.

FAMILY FUN Festival was held at Ellisport, sponsored by the Commercial Club. The festival featured a ball held at Burton the evening before, an address by P. Monroe Smock — editor of the Vashon Island News-Record — a band, booths, a tug of war and a baseball game. Alyssa Jean Shipley was crowned queen at that festival, and her court included four young women. The newspaper reported there was “no accident, no drinking and no unseemly conduct by anyone.” Terkel Hansen, president of the Vashon State Bank, remarked that the festival was “unquestionably the biggest thing the island has ever put over.” Two years later, in 1926, the festival was moved to town at the Vashon school grounds, where Ober Park is now. Mabel Holland was crowned queen and given a key to her island empire. She also had a court of four. Their photo from the July 30, 1926, News-Record shows us what well-dressed flappers were wearing then. The tradition of a Vashon Island queen and court was well established and continued into the post-war years, with breaks during the Great Depression and World War II. From the late 1940s through the early 1970s, the festival grew increasingly larger and more elaborate. And with this growth came a more important role for the festival queen and more elaborate floats for the queen and her court to ride in the parade. The 1951 photo (shown above) of Island Harvest Queen Susan Wadleigh and her court on their float covered in fir boughs, ferns and flowers is a good example of how important the festival queens were to the festival. By the late 1950s, the festival queen also became Miss Vashon and was eligible to participate in the Miss Washington

Pageant representing Vashon Island. But by the early 1970s, the tradition faded away. Changes in attitudes, the women’s movement, the counter-culture revolution and a lack of volunteers to run the contest led to the end of Miss Vashon. Rhea Brobeck was the last festival queen crowned as Miss Vashon at the 1971 Island Festival, and she competed in the 1972 Miss Washington contest. With no festival queen at today’s festival, the role of grand marshal — given each year to a community leader — has expanded. The unofficial mayor contest has become another way to recognize islanders at the festival and also raises money for local nonprofits. But a special part of the festival disappeared when Vashon lost its annual festival queen. — Bruce Haulman is an island historian.

HERITAGE MUSEUM

Travel back in time The Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum, housed in a historical Lutheran church just west of the main intersection in town, showcases the island’s rich history. The well-kept building is small but jampacked with historical artifacts, photos and interactive exhibits on Vashon’s past. This summer the museum will feature an exhibit on the Point Robinson Lighthouse, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary (see page 28). It will run through October. In its permanent collection, Vashon’s rich farming and shipbuilding history is showcased. Visitors can also see artifacts of the island’s earliest settlers — the stuff of island life — a herring rake, an apple peeler and tarnished school bells. Nike missiles were sited on the island, and a nose cone can be found there along with toy rockets made on the island. There are also artifacts from when Native people inhabited the island. The museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays at 10105 SW Bank Road. Admission is by donation. It sometimes holds special events as well. See www.vashonhistory.org.

Vashon seems to have a celebration to mark every season and holiday â€” community-wide affairs that showcase the islandâ€™s creativity and fun-loving spirit. While the biggest bash is the weekend-long Strawberry Festival in mid-July, smaller celebrations occur throughout the year. A celebration of water, wind and sky, Kite Day draws beachgoers for the annual event at Point Robinson. Set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 6, festivities will include food and music, kites available for purchase and tours of the lighthouse. Also at Point Robinson, the Low Tide Celebration, a favorite event among locals, offers a chance to see sea life during one of the lowest tides of the year. This year it is slated for Sunday, Aug. 2. See page 19 for more information. The Fourth of July is a true community affair on Vashon. An impressive fireworks show generously sponsored by locals each year draws hundreds to the shores of Quartermaster Harbor. Halloween is a particularly spirited time on Vashon, when the town core closes to cars and both kids and adults â€” dressed in creative and sometimes extravagant costumes â€” hit the streets. Merchants hand out candy, and thereâ€™s a haunted house or two to explore. Before the big day, many islanders carve pumpkins with intricate designs and put them on display at the Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie, creating a visual cornucopia of jack-oâ€™-lanterns. WinterFest, this year slated for Dec. 5, draws hundreds into town to celebrate the holidays. It includes a Santa-led parade and tree lighting, music, roasted chestnuts and other holiday favorites. Merchants in town stay open late for holiday shopping and drawings for prizes. Spring Fling, when the Easter Bunny makes an appearance, is a delightful, kid-friendly event. It takes place the Saturday before Easter and includes an egg hunt, crafts and prizes for kids in Ober Park.

Dogs love Vashon, too Vashon’s a great place to venture out with a four-legged friend. There are several parks and beaches where a dog can be off-leash if it’s under voice command. KVI Beach and Point Robinson are favorite spots for well-behaved dogs to romp (see page 18). Another favorite spot is Island Center Forest, a 400-acre expanse of trails where dogs are allowed. Also consider the long trails of Dockton Forest (see page 14). But dogs need to share the trail with horses, cyclists and joggers, so aggressive and overly friendly dogs need to be leashed. he west coast of Washington state, particularly the peninsula-protected waters of the Puget Sound, is a mariner’s playground. From the workhorse fleet of white and green ferries to sailboats, barges and fishing trollers, vessels of every shape and size sail the waters around Vashon Island. It should come as no surprise then that the island is also home to a lighthouse, which stands watch on the easternmost point of Maury Island, as it has for the last 100 years. The Point Robinson Lighthouse, easily Vashon’s most iconic landmark, celebrates its centennial anniversary this year. With a permanent spot on the National Register of Historic Places, the lighthouse has a story as rich as it is long, and there is much more to this former Coast Guard station than its classically picturesque facade and stunning backdrop that typically draws shutterbugs and wedding parties alike. 28

Marine navigation aid at Point Robinson was first established 130 years ago with a fog signal in 1885. Two years later, a lantern was attached to a post as the first light source, and in 1915, the lighthouse was built. The best source of information on the 38-foot red-and-white beacon is Captain Joe Wubbold, known on Vashon as Captain Joe. Wubbold is a former Coast Guard captain and current president of the Keepers of Point Robinson, a group of volunteers dedicated to preserving the lighthouse and the popular park where it sits. On a tour of the lighthouse — which Wubbold gives weekly during the warmer months — he might tell you about the barn that the U.S. Lighthouse Service initially built for the station in the hopes that those who lived there could be self-sufficient. He might also tell you about the boathouse, of which there are still some remains. As part of the centennial celebration, the “barn boys” — a group within the Keepers of Point Robinson that perform most of the maintenance at the site — plan to restore it. “We want it to look just like it did,” Wubbold said, “and the barn boys can do it.” Another project in the works at the HEAD TO THE POINT lighthouse this year Point Robinson Park is open daily from is to install a new dawn to dusk. But if you really want to see Wubbold light up, get him talking about the lighthouse’s original light, a Fresnel lens that still sits in the lantern room at the top of the tower. Though the Coast Guard installed a less expensive and more easily replaceable LED light there in 2008, Wubbold and the Keepers insisted that the rare Victorian-era Fresnel lens (named after the French physicist who created it) remain in its place. “These lenses are priceless. This one is made up of 61 prisms, each individually cast of leaded crystal and polished and mounted by hand,” Wubbold said. Those who visit Point Robinson might also be greeted by

lighthouse Wubbold’s newest protege, 6-year-old Mirabelle, who lives in the caretaker’s quarters with her family. When the light was automated in 1979, there was no longer a need for the lighthouse to be manned. However, when the Vashon Park District entered into a long-term lease for the park with the Coast Guard in 1998, it added a caretaker, primarily for park security. Jake Heil and Julia Anderson currently fill that position, having moved with their two children from Portland earlier this year. While the lighthouse is the main draw at Point Robinson, the spot is also home to a popular park and beach managed by the Vashon Park District. Surrounded on three sides by water, the point offers breathtaking views of Puget Sound and Mount Rainier. A large, grassy lawn makes a good spot for picnics, and low tide exposes a ribbon of sandy beach dotted with driftwood that draws walkers and sandcastle builders alike. The Vashon Beach Naturalists hold their popular Low Tide Celebration — a chance to see and learn about sea creatures — at Point Robinson every summer. And come June, the beach fills with families and the sky fills

with kites during the annual Kite Day. Those who fall in love with Point Robinson might consider staying there a few nights. Two historical Keepers’ Quarters at the point are available to rent

through the park district. While the former Coast Guard captain and his crew of volunteers should have visitors covered for on-site information, in town the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum is displaying a special exhibit on Point Robinson through Oct. 15, 2015. The exhibit offers artifacts, pictures and interactive displays on the lighthouse, as well as profiles of three of the light’s historical keepers. There is also a special section called “This Little Light of Ours” that displays local artwork featuring the lighthouse. At the end of the day, Wubbold might also tell you that the most interesting thing about the Point Robinson Lighthouse is the lack of interesting things that have happened on its watch. As busy as the Port of Tacoma has been since the late 1800s, the lighthouse’s reliability rating is high, as there have been no groundings or marine accidents in the area. “Lighthouses have been around for 3,000 years,” Wubbold said. “There’s a reason for that. Places to play With its beaches, woods and parks, Vashon provides a playground for kids of all ages. There are plenty of fun activities to keep children busy on the island. Here are a few places to start. TAKE A DIP The Vashon Pool will open for the season on Memorial Day Weekend and continue through September. Throughout the summer, the pool will offer early morning and noontime lap swims, open swims every afternoon and evening, family swims and swimming lessons. Come September, hours will be reduced, but the pool will still be open in the afternoons and on weekends. A popular place, the pool has a spiral slide, diving board and plenty of pool toys. Daily admission is $6 general and $3 for seniors and children 3 and younger. Season passes and punch cards are available at a discounted price. Individual and group lessons and private pool rentals are available, too. For more information, call pool manager Scott Bonney at (206) 240-7721. The pool is located at 9600 SW 204th St. next to the high school. It is ADA accessible.

HEAD TO THE PARK Ober Park, at the north edge of town, is an excellent choice for little ones. It has play structures and swings, as well as woods and trails, and the library is just steps away. Other play areas include Dockton Park, with playground equipment feet from the beach, and Chautauqua Elementary School, which offers play equipment and covered basketball hoops. Agren Park sports a large field, trails in the woods and a baseball diamond.

SKATEBOARD AT BARC The Burton Adventure Recreation Center — or BARC — is the park district’s “alternative park,” offering a new skate bowl, an indoor skateboard and in-line skate facility, a nine-hole disc golf course, BMX trails and a regulation sand volleyball court. GO FOR A NATURE WALK Choose one of Vashon’s less strenuous hiking trails to take little ones to explore the outdoors. Consider visiting Island Center Forest via the trailhead on 188th Street, where it’s a short walk to Mukai Pond. Fisher Pond is also a fun spot for families, and the trail there is wide and flat. A one-screen movie house endures Islanders rallied to help keep a unique theater open BY SARAH LOW

here can you go to sip an old-fashioned egg cream, nibble a locally made organic cookie or munch on popcorn made in a WWII-era popper while watching a 3-D blockbuster, the Bolshoi Ballet’s latest performance or a live musical event? You’d be hard pressed to find any place other than the Vashon Theatre, the island’s sole movie house. A surviving member of a dwindling group of independent, single-screen venues, this downtown cornerstone is more than just a funky place to see movies. It’s an embodiment of the community itself. The current 400-seat theater opened in 1947 after a fire destroyed the island’s first cinema. As movie studios switch from 35-mm film to all-digital formats, theaters have had to install new projection and screening systems, costing upwards of $80,000 for the projectors alone. This is a drop in the bucket for massive, multiplex theater chains, but for the small, independent movie houses, it’s been a death knell, forcing many out of business. Vashon Theatre owner Eileen Wolcott was faced with the dilemma in 2012, when she said it was getting harder and harder to get films the theater could show, even though she and her husband put in a new projector when they bought the theater in 2003. “Everything was 3D; all of the new movies were digital. There were fewer and fewer options,” Wolcott said. “We knew if we 34

wanted to keep showing first-run films, we were going to have to figure out how to buy the new equipment.” Initially prepared to take out a substantial bank loan, the Wolcotts — who live in West Seattle but also have a house on Vashon — soon discovered they had more support than they thought. As they were gearing up to go into debt, they connected with Island GreenTech, a young nonprofit group with a mission to catalyze business activity on Vashon. GreenTech, whose members felt it was important to keep the theater open, agreed to help with the needed fundraising. Theater lovers jumped on the opportunity to give to the cause, some giving generously. The group collected $35,000 in three donations alone. “When we started, we wondered if we could even raise enough to buy the projector,” said Tag Gornall, president of GreenTech. “Ultimately, we raised far more than we ever imagined.” Indeed, the effort garnered enough money to purchase not only a digital projector with 3D capability, but 3D glasses, a special cleaning unit for the glasses and some audio equipment as well. “There was a point we had to put an announcement in The Beachcomber for people to stop sending money,” Gornall said.

movie theater Rex Stratton, one of the founders of GreenTech, explained that due to laws preventing nonprofits from giving money to private businesses, the funds raised were not given to the Wolcotts to buy the equipment. GreenTech, on behalf of the Vashon community, owns it. “This was a real Vashon solution,” he said. This also means that if the theater is ever sold or goes out of business, the equipment still belongs to islanders. “The people in this community tacitly took ownership of the theater,” Gornall said. For their part, the Wolcotts purchased a new, larger screen that was needed to show the digital films and built a new stage. They also agreed to a unique arrangement in lieu of paying GreenTech to rent the upgraded equipment. At least two nights a week, the theater is now available free-of-charge to community groups. Tuesday evenings — referred to as GreenTech Nights — are for nonprofits to show films or hold educational events. The theater also hosts free movies for middle school and high school students, and on the first Friday of every month, the Vashon

Film Society screens independent, often locally produced films in conjunction with the Gallery Cruise. “It was overwhelming,” Wolcott said of the community’s response. “Just a huge miracle. And the new equipment is also allowing us to expand our offerings to adjust to the changing market.”

Like all theaters, the Vashon Theatre has had to adjust to changes such as the increasing availability of new movies on cable or on-demand services like Netflix. Recently Wolcott decided to expand her own lineup to appeal to wider audiences. Some of the programming the Vashon Theatre now offers includes performances filmed for the National Theatre Live series, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Bolshoi Ballet. Looking to the future, Wolcott notes that the theater is close to being licensed to serve beer and wine, which would likely only happen on weekend evenings or for special programs when appropriate. “We want to keep things family friendly,” she said. And with her husband getting closer to retirement, Wolcott says the two of them hope to become a more permanent part of the community they’ve grown to appreciate and move to the island full-time. “Eventually it would be nice to just be on the island,” she said. “Vashon is like a deep breath.” — Sarah Low is a staff writer at The Beachcomber.

STEP OUT ON FIRST FRIDAY Vashon’s vibrant arts scene shines particularly bright on the first Friday of every month, when galleries and other businesses open new shows. The evening is a great chance to see artwork and connect with islanders and other visitors. Many island places — shops, restaurants, banks and even two senior centers — show art and participate in the First Friday Gallery Cruise each month. Vashon visitors and residents alike can now tune in to a radio station billed as “all Vashon all the time” at KVSH. Broadcasting on 101.9 FM and online, KVSH offers an eclectic mix of Vashon music, talk shows on local issues and more, all produced by a group of intrepid island radio lovers. Fifteen years ago, an FM station with island-driven programming — let alone the notion of an app — seemed like a certified pipe dream. But the visionaries of Voice of Vashon were tenacious, and last

October, the nonprofit media organization broadcast its first show. “It (was) the ultimate community historic moment,” said Rick Wallace, a longtime Voice of Vashon (VoV) volunteer. “There aren’t that many things on Vashon that have taken so many years to come to fruition.” Indeed, the group first applied for FM status back in 2001, but was turned down due to lack of space on the FM dial. Later efforts were also unsuccessful. Not to be deterred, the energetic VoV volunteers moved ahead on other broadcast frontiers, establishing a web radio station with music and shows by islanders, a community access television station on Channel 21 and an alert system that broadcasts ferry information and emergency alerts on the radio at 1650 AM. “It’s a testament to the creativity of this bunch of people,” said Susan McCabe, VoV’s station manager. “After we lost (the applications for FM status) … each time rather than folding our tents and going away, we found other ways to continue broadcasting.” So when the Obama administration allowed the FCC to open up the bandwidth for community radio stations, VoV was ready. This time around, the FCC quickly approved VoV’s application. “2014 was the year the dream came true,” McCabe said. “Now, KVSH has a range of fun programming, from comedy to talk shows to music. The music is island generated or related, which you can’t get anywhere else in the metropolitan area.” Created, hosted and produced by island volunteers, KVSH’s 24/7 broadcast offers a variety of programming with lots of music but also shows with poetry, local news, comedy and children’s stories. The station’s flagship show, the Morning Scramble, runs from 8 to 11 a.m. each weekday. The program is hosted by live broadcasters — half of whom have previous radio experience — and features music, discussions and interviews. “We try to be a reflection showcase, a forum for all that is Vashon,” McCabe said. “We even have a program called Island Crossroads that covers those subjects whispered about in the aisles at Thriftway.” KVSH fills the air between programs with what it calls Vashon All the Time, a mix of music related to the island. The lineup includes songs by local musicians who frequently play on Vashon or have connections to the community. Some connections are more tenuous than others — as is the case with a band whose guitar player once drove a UPS truck on the island — but listen-

ers will also hear big names like Macklemore, K.D. Lang and Bill Frisell, who have all played shows on Vashon. “There are all kinds of weird connections,” said Jeff Hoyt, KVSH’s program manager and a weekly radio host. “We are trying to play with the connections and have some fun with it, see what happens when we mix it all together. ... Though the station’s low-power signal covers most of the island, reception can be spotty in waterfront neighborhoods, some inland low-elevation places and the two ferry docks, which is where VoV’s mobile app comes into play. With the app, listeners can tune in to KVSH anywhere on the island or around the globe. McCabe tells stories about grandparents in all parts of the world who listen to live sportscasting of Vashon High School football, basketball and soccer games. “This is the only place people are going to get Vashon Island information from their neighbors about their home,” McCabe said. “We hope it will be a forum for community issues and opinions, and certainly a showcase for the arts that are happening here.”

Vashon Opera rivals big-town shows Theater

Perhaps one of the island’s most stand-out artistic efforts is the Vashon Opera, a small opera company that turns out shows that rival bigcity productions. It’s rare that a place the size of Vashon would boast its own opera company, but after a pair of professional opera singers landed on the island, Vashon Opera was born. Since its inception, the company has drawn sellout crowds and considerable praise. Since founding the company in 2009, Jennifer and Andy Krikawa have produced 11 full-scale operas, including “La Boheme,” “Madama Butterfly” and “Die Fledermaus.” The volunteer-run company has been an effort of more than 90 islanders donating their time and talents to create top-notch opera. The company brings up-and-coming singers, well-known Northwest performers and talented orchestral musicians to the Vashon stage. Season seven of the Vashon Opera opens this fall with “The Elixir of Love,” a comedy by Gaetano Donizetti that will feature a professional cast and a chorus of 26 Vashon performers. Sung in Italian with English supertitles, the opera will play Sept. 11 and 13, 2015. In the spring, the company will put on “Pagliacci Palooza,” a combination of opera’s greatest hits and the opera “I Pagliacci.” The show is scheduled for May 13 and 15, 2016. DRAMA DOCK Drama Dock, now in its 39th year, is an island institution — a community theater company that showcases Vashon’s remarkable theatrical talent. A legendary bicycle The bike in the tree continues to draw curious visitors

Tales abound about how a bicycle came to be lodged in a tree feet off the ground outside Vashon town. But a longtime island family has laid a solid claim to the bike. The bicycle belonged to Don Puz, who left it in the woods in 1954, when he was as 8. Don received the bicycle after a tragedy struck his family: A fast-burning blaze swept through his home one evening, when everyone in this family of seven was gone but Donâ€™s father, who perished in the fire. Islanders, moved by the tragedy, responded in tender Vashon style, donating clothes, furniture, financial support and a new bike for Don. But the bicycle wasnâ€™t his favorite, so one day he left it behind in the woods. He never returned to fetch it, and the rest is history. The bicycle in the tree has become a legend on Vashon, and many travel to the island simply to take in the curious site. Unfortunately, the bike has been vandalized recently and is missing several parts. But locals have discussed restoring it, and whatâ€™s left is still a draw for those interested in the quirky sight and the story behind it. Weekend spotlights working dogs The Vashon Sheepdog Classic has become a celebrated island event that attracts thousands of spectators each year. At the multiday competition, dogs and Sheepdog dog handlers from around Trials the country demonstrate sheepherding at an idyllic setting, the rolling meadows of Misty Isle Farms. The most well-attended herding event on the West Coast, the sheepdog classic is a nationals-qualifying event for the U.S. Border Collie Handlers Association. Maggi McClure, an islander and professional dog trainer, started the event in 2010. It has grown each year, drawing larger crowds and more dogs and handlers. Artisan coffee has roots at the historical Roasterie BY JULI GOETZ MORSER

he Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie is a hub of activity, frequently filled with people enjoying the shop’s brews and socializing on the porch of the 100-yearold clapboard building. Old coffee bags and grinders lining the walls of the shop, however, suggest the spot’s historic past. It was here at Center that Jim Stewart, known for founding Seattle’s Best Coffee and bringing artisan coffee to the Northwest, got his start. As Stewart tells it, the path to Seattle’s Best Coffee began with two bookkeepers — the women who did the taxes at an ice cream shop he opened in Coupeville in the summer of 1969. But Stewart’s eureka moment came when he discovered The Coffee Bean, a specialty coffee shop in Los Angeles where he eventually worked during optometry school. “They had coffee samples, and it was like whoa, this coffee has flavor. Each one is different from the other. So I started drinking coffee,” Stewart said. And he started selling it at his ice cream shop, called The Wet Whisker, buying from a wholesaler in Portland. Stewart also learned the art of roasting, and soon his younger brother joined him. In 1971, the two opened a second store at Pier 70 in Seattle. Stewart now says leaving optometry to sell coffee happened because he was going through a divorce and not thinking clearly. But his love of specialty coffee and the success of The Coffee Bean also drove the decision.

“That coffee was different. People didn’t know what it was. … People were coming in like Robert Redford and Cary Grant. I mean for a 21- or 22-year-old kid from Wisconsin, you could hardly believe you were there,” he said. “But I learned the biz and then came back up here.” He brought his entrepreneurial spirit and Midas touch with him. After Pier 70, Stewart landed a contract for an ice cream concession at Seattle Center. It became the largest hand-dipped hard ice cream stand on the West Coast, and sales funded his coffee business. He then began roasting on Vashon in 1984, in the basement of old Granny Dugan’s house, the current site of the Roasterie. Stewart had moved to the island in 1981, and he liked the idea of not commuting to a warehouse in Seattle. Next, the brothers opened a retail store in Bellevue Square. But the company name, The Wet Whisker, and the burlap bag look were not for Bellevue clientele. WWW.VASHONBEACHCOMBER.COM

FOOD & DRINK “We decided ... to call ourselves Stewart Brothers Coffee and laid out this whole new thing,” Stewart said. With high traffic flowing through the Bellevue Square store and a focus on product quality, sales soon reached $1 million and the brothers met a subsequent challenge. They needed money to grow. It was the Carter era, and the financial risk came in interest rates close to 18 percent. Riskier still was Stewart’s decision to buy coffee direct from growers after a trip to Indonesia, Central and South America, a practice that was unheard of at the time. “Nobody was doing that, not even the big companies,” he said. “I figured we could buy less expensively and get better quality, but you needed to buy larger quantities.” As the business began to expand, Stewart Brothers Coffee in Chicago discovered Stewart Brothers Coffee in Seattle, and they didn’t like the coincidence. The brothers switched the name to SBC, and in 1987, the company became an overnight sensation. SBC won a tasting contest held by the restaurant McCormick & Schmick’s, and that night on every radio and TV station in Seattle, SBC morphed into Seattle’s Best

Coffee. From there the company’s trajectory soared high and fast, with shops all over Seattle and sales reaching $5 million. SBC had to restructure again, and this time Stewart bowed out. He sold 60 percent of his share but continued to keep his hand in the business doing what he loved most — buying the beans. And he did so until the day Starbucks bought the company in 2003. “Which I can tell you was not part of the plan,” he said. Though there was worry that Stewart’s beloved shop on Vashon might morph into a Starbucks, the company only wanted what was new at SBC, such as computers and cash registers. Starbucks had no use for the old roasters or other items, which meant Stewart had a museum on his hands when islander Eva DeLoach approached him to rent the building. To Stewart’s delight, DeLoach was also interested in roasting.

“She knew nothing about coffee, but was afraid of nothing,” Stewart said. DeLoach brought Stewart’s former roaster on board, and soon the smell of roasting beans permeated the air again. She named her new business the Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie, and because she wanted the feel of the old building left intact, Stewart didn’t have to move his collection of antiques. “It was perfect,” he said. Today, the Roasterie is a thriving business. Along with freshly brewed coffee, espresso and pastries, patrons can buy organic sandwiches and salads, slices of freshly baked cake and pies, and islandmade beer, cider and wine. DeLoach’s other business, The Minglement, is also housed in the building and is one of the state’s original natural food stores. The Minglement offers an array of healthy foods, teas, supplements, local produce and hand-crafted gifts. As for Stewart, he still owns the building and plays a role in coffee bean sourcing for the Roasterie. He spends half the year in Costa Rica on his farm, which became the country’s first certified organic coffee farm. Sales from his beans help fund Stewart’s nonprofit Vashon Island Coffee Foundation (VICF). Originally established to assist Santiago, Vashon’s sister city in Guatemala, VICF has also helped with flood relief and earthquake assistance in El Salvador and Costa Rica. Inside the Roasterie recently, Stewart talked with some patrons while evidence of his storied career hung overhead. With his easy laugh, Stewart reminisced that the two bookkeepers never did ante up on their part of the deal. “We didn’t get the donut recipe, thank heavens,” he said. “But we did get the coffee.”

Located less than two miles south of Vashon town, the intersection known as Center — at Vashon Highway and Cemetery Road — was once Vashon’s business hub. Today Center retains its historical feel thanks to the maintenance of several historical buildings, which are now home to some beloved, locally owned businesses. The Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie was where the coffee company that eventually became Seattle’s Best Coffee was once housed. It’s still a favorite place to get a cup of coffee or a bite to eat and relax on the front porch (see previous pages). In back of the Roasterie, Zuzu’s Ice Cream serves up frozen delights April through November. Also in the Roasterie building is the Minglement, an organic health food store established in 1979. Shoppers should also head to the back of the Minglement, where Bookman West offers an impressive collection of rare, collectible and signed books, as well as many quality yet affordable titles, including fiction, poetry and travel books. Kitty corner from the Roasterie, the nonprofit Vashon Allied Arts is located inside a 100-year-old structure built by the Odd Fellows. Now called The Blue Heron Arts Center, it holds a gallery with shows by local artists and a theater that hosts regular concerts and events. Construction is happening at the site, as the nonprofit builds a new performing arts center, slated to open in spring of 2016. See www.vashonalliedarts.org. Also at the intersection, the whitewashed, two-story Fuller Store is the oldest commercial building on Vashon. Beginning in July of 2015, it will house Treasure Island, a local antique shop that recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. At the northern edge of Center, a large red building houses Seattle Distilling, where visitors can get a taste of the locally made vodka, gin and whiskey that has garnered much praise (see page 66).

Queen of caramel builds a sweet empire

tanding at a stove stirring a large pot of caramel one day last December, islander Hedy Anderson shared her journey from occasional candymaker to successful entrepreneur.

Anderson is known on Vashon as the maker of mouthwatering caramels. But she’s also the owner of the Sugar Shack, a commercial kitchen and event space in the downtown building where The Little House, a gift shop, was located for four decades. There Anderson rents out kitchen space to others in the food industry, holds food-centered events and classes and provides the space for special events, ranging from weddings to concerts. And it is where she makes her caramels, the candy that set all the rest in motion. Anderson is the force behind King Caramel, the brand of handmade and hand-wrapped caramels she makes and sells at the Vashon Farmers Market and more than 20 stores on Vashon and beyond. Six years ago Anderson had been working as a handbag designer and had a popular line called Hedy Handbags. But she was unhappy working in the fashion industry and was winding the business down when she made a batch of caramels for family and friends. One of those friends, the manager of the farmers market at the 58

time, thought that the caramels would be received well there. At first, Anderson was reluctant to work in the food industry. But she set those feelings aside and started slowly, making caramels in a commercial kitchen at the common house at Vashon Cohousing and selling only at the farmers market, while homeschooling her two children. Then Little House owner Bettie Edwards wanted to carry the sweet treats at her shop, and the business grew from there. Quickly though, Anderson said, she learned that unlike the handbag buyers she had worked with, food and drink buyers were enjoyable to do business with. “They like to eat, drink and laugh,” she said. While some may think of caramels as the uniform, mass-produced Kraft squares, Anderson’s caramels are a step apart. Online she carries six varieties: Classic, Roasted Pecan, Organic Agave, Fresh Ginger, Black Licorice and Sea Salt, the far and away favorite. For the farmers market, she gets creative and tries out additional batches, such as coffee, rocky road and turtle caramels. Her busiest times are in the summer and December, when she sells a couple hundred pounds a week and over 4,000 caramels in a month’s time. A small team helps with packaging and other tasks, but so far, she is the only one staffing the stove, where she tests everything she makes.

Together, they offer monthly pop-up markets, where they showcase their work, offering samples and selling their food. They also offer regular cooking classes, ranging from how to make the best birthday cakes to the foods of France, Greece and India. “People can spend a Saturday afternoon being inspired, learning something new and maybe have a glass of wine,” she said. She also offers kids a turn in the kitchen. For Mother’s and Father’s Day, young cooks can learn the ins and outs of cooking for their parents, and this summer, she is offering Camp Yum, where kids will harvest vegetables at a nearby farm then cook and eat lunch and make caramels for dessert. Anderson wants the Sugar Shack to serve the wider community,

as well, she added, and offers it for rent. Concerts there can seat up to 50 people and sit-down dinners can accommodate 36. Caterers are welcome to use the kitchen space. “We want to keep it versatile,” she said. For her part, Edwards, who reached out to Anderson with that middle-of-the-night text, predicted success. “She’s going to make it a winner. Vashon spirits

Wineries and more offer local tastes Vashon Island has long been home to several successful wineries. But recently, the island has become something of a mecca for talented individuals making spirits of all kinds. Now nearly any type of drink you can think of — wine, beer, cider, perry and even liquor — is made and sold on Vashon. The island-produced spirits are garnering awards and rivaling those of the best-known makers.

Many of the beverages are made using locally grown fruit, creating a special connection to the place. And on Vashon, the people behind the bottles are eager to talk about what they make. Several of the businesses have tasting rooms and offer occasional tours of their operations. Consider walking through Asian pear trees at Nashi Orchards or seeing the state-of-the-art facilities at Seattle Distilling Company. Some makers are also on hand at the Vashon Farmers Market and for the island’s annual CiderFest. See the following pages for a little about each business.

wine, cider and more PALOUSE WINERY Palouse Winery on Vashon’s north end produces 1,500 cases of handcrafted wine a year. Owners George and Linda Kirkish, whose bottles have won a slate of awards, complete the entire winemaking process onsite using Eastern Washington grapes and aging the wine in French oak barrels. The winery plans to soon release its first port, a joint effort with the Seattle Distilling Company, located on Vashon, which made the port’s brandy from Palouse wines. VASHON WINERY Vashon Winery has been producing cabernet sauvignon, merlot and its reserve red for nearly three decades. Ron Irvine, the winery’s owner, was named Best Winemaker of 2012 in the Seattle Weekly’s Best of Seattle edition. Irvine works with several local vineyards, so many of his bottles incorporate grapes grown on the island. He has also gained a following for his hard cider and his sparkling

The small but growing Maury Island Winery is a family-owned and operated vineyard and winery dedicated to producing high quality, estate-grown wines. SEATTLE DISTILLING

Dragon’s Head Cider is home to 2,000 cider fruit trees and a production facility. Owners Wes and Laura Cherry believe one of the keys to creating great cider is having control over the entire process, and they do pressing, fermentation, blending and bottling all on their farm. They offer several ciders, which they describe as lightly effervescent and pleasantly dry, as well as perry, an alcoholic drink made from pears. Thriftway, the Minglement and Vashon Liquor carry their ciders, and May Kitchen + Bar and The Hardware Store Restaurant offer them on their menus. Family-owned Seattle Distilling is a grain-to-bottle distillery that makes vodka, gin, whiskey, coffee liqueur and many other seasonal offerings. It has garnered many national awards for its spirits and had even been voted best Western Washington Distillery by Evening Magazine. NASHI ORCHARDS Nashi Orchards creates artisanal perry and hard ciders. The winery started with Asian pear perry and has expanded its offerings to include Island Harvest Perry, Spring Cider, Issho Ni Cider and a quincepear-apple blend. Additional small-batch blends of perry and cider will be released throughout the year and are only available from the winery location. On Vashon, Nashi Orchards products can be found at the Minglement, Thriftway, Vashon Liquor and The Hardware Store Restaurant. VASHON BREWING COMPANY Vashon Brewing Company, a small but beloved brand created by islander Cliff Goodman, offers original beers brewed right on Vashon using all Washington and local ingredients. He offers several brews at a time, including IPAs, blondes and porters. Several local restaurants carry the beer, called “Cliff’s Beer” after the brewer. Or pick up a refillable growler at Vashon Liquor, the Minglement or the Vashon Farmers Market, where the beer can also be tasted.
