Seven candidates, including two incumbents, have filed to run for three positions on the Vashon Park District board. When the week-long filing period closed last Friday, the roster of candidates included current commissioners Scott Harvey and Bill Ameling, who are vying for Position 5 along with Peter Ray. Joe Wald, the current board chair, did not file to run again. In addition to Ray, the islanders who have stepped forward to serve the district for the first time are Rick Skillman, Karen Gardner, Bob McMahon and Joshua Weil. Skillman and Gardner are running for Position 1, the seat Ameling currently holds. Rick Skillman is a retired hospital CEO who said he filed for that position specifically to challenge Ameling. “I think he has contributed a great deal, and I think it is time
to have someone else there,” he said last week before Ameling filed for a different position. In one of the island’s chilliest annual fundraisers, nearly 20 courageous souls ran into the water at Jensen Point on Saturday afternoon, some of them dunking entirely underwater. “If you’re brave, you dive in,” said Ava Apple, director of the Vashon Senior Center, which held the so-called Chicken Plunge for the third time last weekend. “My son made me dive,” she added. “It’s adrenaline that gets me through it.” The event, which participants collected donations for, raised about $1,200 for the senior center, funds that Apple said will help with the nonprofit’s shoestring budget. Still, Apple said she wished more islanders would participate in the Chicken Plunge. She was unsure if the low numbers this year were a reflection of the busy weekend, with many other events scheduled on Vashon, or if it simply showed that people weren’t interested in jumping into Quartermaster Harbor. Many who did take the plunge were senior center members or board members. “There weren’t many young people,” Apple said. “That’s good for us, right?”

The legal battle over the Mukai Farm and Garden continues, as Texas resident Mary Matthews works to prevent a group of Vashon activists who recently won in court from taking control of the historic property. Last week Matthews came to Vashon and quietly held an open house at the property, much to the chagrin of the group of islanders who have for weeks hoped she would transfer the property to them. “We are not going away,” said Glenda Pearson, a Friends of Mukai board member who expressed frustration last week over the prolonged dispute. “We’ve said that from the
beginning. … The end game is to save the property. That’s all we really want.” The Friends of Mukai celebrated a major legal victory last month, when King County Superior Court Judge Monica Benton ruled that the group of islanders had legal control of Island Landmarks, the nonprofit that owns the house. The ruling left Matthews, who has been highly criticized during her time at the helm of the nonprofit, and other former board members no longer affiliated with the organization or the property. However, Matthews’ party — which includes former board members Nelson Happy, Owen Ryan and Ken and Ellen De Frang — recently appealed that decision. They also argued for a stay, a legal action that would allow them to retain control of Island Landmarks during the appeal, which could take six to nine months. SEE MUKAI, 12

Falling short of its goal to raise a quarter of a million dollars for the island’s public schools by early May, the Vashon Schools Foundation continues to seek donations for this year’s campaign. The foundation had hoped to raise $247,000 by GiveBig, a fundraising event hosted by the Seattle Foundation on May 5. While the nonprofit did bring in over $54,000 on that day, late last week it still had only raised $173,500, about 70 percent of its goal. “I feel pretty good about it, but I think there’s definitely some time for people to give and bump that up,” said Donna Nespor, the foundation’s administrative coordinator. While the foundation in the past has raised funds to fill the Vashon School District’s budget hole and save teacher positions, it now collects money for school district initiatives, including new programs, curriculum and textbooks. The nonprofit also scaled back its request from the community, which in past years has been around $500,000 Still, Nespor said it’s harder to raise money for the schools when they’re not facing a crisis. “When people hear about classes being cut at the high school, arts reduced at the elementary school, that ignites people to give,” she said. Nespor also said that some donors, seeing the foundation ask for less, gave less
than they have in the past, even though in past years the foundation has fallen short of its goal. “Some donors gave half of what they did in the past,” she said. A top priority for the foundation this year was the funding of a district-wide mental health and suicide prevention program, to cost $58,000. That program was identified in the foundation’s first tier, which has been fully funded. “I’m certainly pleased. ... It’s important to make sure that’s covered,” Nespor said. Priorities that have yet to be funded include new science lab equipment for the middle and high school, graphing calculators for the high school, psychology textbooks and a summer school program for elementary and middle schoolers. Nespor noted that while the school district is no longer in a financial crisis, many of the items the foundation has been working to fund have been ignored or underfunded for years. “They are in a lot better shape than they were three years ago, but they’ve been living rather frugally,” she said. The foundation’s dozen board members will continue to privately seek out onetime and monthly donations, Nespor said. While there’s no firm deadline for the campaign and gifts are accepted year-round, the foundation would like to raise the full amount by July, when the school district will work to set the following school year’s budget. Three school board seats to be contested in fall election Former board members, new faces seek to become commissioners By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer
Three seats on the Vashon School District’s board of commissioners will be contested in the November election. Current commissioners Dan Chasan and Laura Wishik each filed with King County Elections last week to seek reelection to the five-person board, and both were challenged by new candidates. And two people will vie for the seat that will be vacated by Kathy Jones. Chasan, who has a long history on Vashon’s school board, is challenged by John Osborne, who has also served on the board. Chasan is currently finishing his second four-year term, and he also served several other terms in the late 1970s through the early 2000s. John “Oz” Osborne was a school board member from 2005 to 2009, but did not seek re-election after that. A software engineer, he works for the University of Washington and teaches at Olympic College in Bremerton. In addition to his school board experience, Osborne has served on several citizens’ committees tasked with campaigning for school levies and led the citizens’ committee for the bond for the new high school building. He is currently on the board of Vashon Partners in Education (PIE) and has served on a few other nonprofit boards. His two children
both attended Vashon’s public schools. “I think I bring experience, and I think I bring a new perspective and new energy,” he said. Wishik, who is seeking a third term on the school board, is challenged by newcomer Toby Holmes. Holmes, a Vashon native, graduated from Vashon High School in 1989 and returned to the island seven years ago. He now has two children at Chautauqua Elementary School and commutes to Seattle, where he does business development and marketing for a software company. A few of his family members, including his wife, have worked for the school district as well. In an interview, Holmes said he is interested in joining the board largely to help guide the district as it navigates changing national standards and to promote conversation around that topic. “Everyone has the best intentions in mind. Part of the role of a board member is to make sure the district is still following the vision that it set out,” he said. Kathy Jones, who currently fills Position 3 on the board, will not seek reelection, and islanders Jake Jacobovitch and Zabette Macomber both filed to run for her seat. Jacobovitch, who has lived on Vashon nearly 40 years, was a commissioner from 2003 to 2007, when he was defeated by Wishik. He also ran in 2009 and was defeated by Steve Ellison, who is still on the board. His children attended Vashon schools, and he has grandchildren at Chautauqua. Jacobovitch is the facility maintenance manager for King County Metro, and his long list of volunteer experience includes

time on several other public and nonprofit boards, including the park district, community council, Vashon Youth Baseball & Softball and the Puget Sound Regional Council Growth Management Policy Board. He has also been a volunteer school bus driver and sports coach. In a written statement, Jacobovitch said that if elected, some of his priorities would be curriculum alignment, financial stability, public involvement and vocational education. “A board is like fabric,” he said. “Five identical strands going in the same direction does not produce a strong fabric.” Macomber is currently on the board of the Vashon Schools Foundation and the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust. She has a degree in education and worked as a substitute in the Seattle Public Schools for a year and also taught in New Dehli for two years. She does not currently work outside the home and has two children who attend Chautauqua and McMurray. She has also served on the boards of Vashon Youth & Family Services and the Vashon Maury Cooperative Preschool. In an interview, Macomber called it an interesting time to be in education, particularly with new national standards and with Vashon’s school board considering another capital bond. “I have a great respect for the school board, and I think it’s important to get new voices on the school board,” she said. “I think I could really help the school district in the future and in the years to come.” Ballots for the Nov. 3 general election will be mailed in mid-October. Islanders seek reelection to other boards, but some seats unfilled While Vashon’s park board and school board will see races this fall, several islanders filed last week to run unopposed for positions on other public boards. At Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR), David Hoffmann will run unopposed for reelection, and no one filed for the position that will be vacated by commissioner Rex Stratton. Stratton has been deeply involved as a fire commissioner, but will not run for re-election as he is making plans to move off the island. Bob Powell will run unopposed for reelection the three-person board at Water District 19, and Don Joy will run unopposed for re-election to the Vashon Sewer District. Likewise, Lisa Devereau will run unopposed for re-election to the cemetery district. For the board that oversees Vashon’s small municipal airport, three seats are up for election, and only one person has filed. Will Gerrior has filed for the seat to be vacated by Dennis Fohart, and neither Kaye Pierson nor Bob Therkelsen is seeking re-election. Vashon residents will have one more chance to run for the positions that no one has come forward to fill. A special filing period will be Aug. 5 through Aug. 7, and filing must be done in person at the King County Elections offices. At VIFR, secretary Susan Wolf said that if Stratton leaves before his term is over in December, the board could appoint an interim commissioner. — Natalie Martin

Islander works to start an alternative program for middle school girls Ten students must enroll for the program to be offered By SARAH LOW Staff Writer
Vashon may soon have an alternative education option for middle school girls, as the Vashon Learning Cooperative, a new program offered by islander Lisa DeFaccio, is now accepting applications. “This is like a bridge between homeschooling and private school,” DeFaccio said. DeFaccio will make a final decision about starting the program in about a month, she said last week, explaining that she needs at least 10 students to enroll to make it possible. DeFaccio has been educating students of all ages for over 25 years, with experience teaching and tutoring in general education, special education and highly capable settings. She also cofounded the StudentLink and FamilyLink programs at the Vashon School District with former Superintendent Monte Bridges. But it is her experience as the parent of a busy, highachieving 12-year-old daughter that spurred her current effort to create an alternative program. “I noticed that my daughter has been coming home with
a lot of undifferentiated homework,” DeFaccio said. “The learning is not tailored to what she specifically needs, and there is no opportunity to move ahead in certain subjects without also being responsible for all of the busy work in other areas, all while trying to maintain an extra-curricular focus on top of everything.” Now, DeFaccio’s goal is to provide a program for sixthto eighth-grade girls where they can be educated with customized curricula designed for each student, according to their needs and strengths. Extra-curricular activities will be encouraged and supported by a four-day academic week and very little homework. “We really want to preserve after-school time for other activities,” she said. The program will accept girls only, DeFaccio explained, because they are the ones who she believes have been asking for options. “My daughter and her friends have been the ones pushing for this, and they have made it clear they are looking for a girls-only program,” she said. “I also think that it gives girls at this age a chance to take more risks academically. It’s been my experience that boys at the same age are more assertive, and girls will often sit back. A single-gender situation would give them the chance to reach their potential.”

The cooperative does not meet the state’s criteria to be approved as a private school due to its four-day academic week. Ideally, DeFaccio said, parents of enrolled students would declare their intent to homeschool and she would do the teaching. The program could also partner with families who are already a part of or are interested in joining FamilyLink. Instruction will focus on individualized math programs, a hands-on approach to biology, physics and chemistry through lab work and small groups, and independent projects for learning humanities, language and literacy. Vashon Learning Cooperative will be located in the small house that DeFaccio owns that was previously home to Vashon Natural Medicine, on Vashon Highway north of Courthouse Square. The program will accept a maximum of 15 students, with a tuition of $10,000 per student, per academic year. DeFaccio said that so far six families have expressed interest in enrolling, but she will need a minimum of 10 to make the program financially viable. Enrollment is currently open, and more information about the program can be found at the cooperative’s website, vashonlearning.org. “We’re motivated and excited, but we’ll see who actually signs up,” DeFaccio said.

Prom brings back memories best forgotten
Remember what you love about living on Vashon
Since the local high school promenade is approaching, I thought I’d offer a lesson learned from my own prom. Here it is: Don’t listen to your basketball coach. Perhaps a little backstory is in order. When I was 10 years old, I moved from Ontario, Canada, to Tennessee. I didn’t know what to expect and had heard strange things about the American South, like the weird food they eat — for instance, chitlins, which are made from hog intestines, or grits, which are made from, well, nobody really knows what grits are made from. People lived in towns with even weirder names like Toad Suck or Bugscuffle. I got my first sense of what lay in store when I was unpacking. I pulled my hockey skates out of a box, and my aunt said, “Are those hockey boots?” Hockey boots. I put the skates back in the box. The high school I attended was quite small and didn’t offer much in the way of athletics. They had a football team, but I don’t look good with helmet hair, so that was out. They had wrestling too, or as they called it, raslin’. I didn’t think wearing a mask and hitting my opponent with a metal folding chair was my scene, though, so that left basketball. The good news was I made the team. The bad news was I was the shortest guy on it. I was basically practice fodder. During games I would ride the pine and check out each squad. Generally, we had the best looking cheerleaders. During halftime I followed my coach around with an ashtray as he gave his comefrom-behind speech, and he always gave the come-from-behind speech because we stunk.

But it also serves to remind us what we appreciate on Vashon, what made us choose this island in the sound not for a vacation but for a lifestyle.
HUMOR By CHRIS AUSTIN The girls’ team, on the other hand, was a different story. They were gifted athletes that made it all the way to the state finals. They lost in the last three seconds on a controversial play to a large, powerhouse school. I can remember those last three ticks of the clock like it was yesterday. The team was composed mostly of seniors, and when prom came around, their coach wanted to make sure each one of his girls would go to their last high school dance. The thing was not all of them were going to be asked. That’s where I come in. The girls’ coach approached me one day and said that if I would go to the prom with “Elbows” (so named, behind her back, for her rebounding skills), he would let me use his Datsun 240z sportscar. I didn’t even have my driver’s license, so I’d take the school mascot to prom for a chance to drive a 240z. Since I was a sophomore, the rules stated that I could be asked to the prom but I couldn’t ask anyone. This problem was solved one day when I looked up from my desk in English class to see Elbows looming in the doorway. My teacher raised an eyebrow as I scurried to the door to meet her. She looked nervously over my head and said, “So you wanna go to the prom or something?” I looked up to her face, envious of

Take time to notice redwood in town I would like to call the attention of your readers to a very large coast redwood tree, Sequoia sempervirens, in the middle of downtown Vashon, on the east side of the street just to the south Treasure Island, the antique store. I estimate the age to be about 115 years old based upon other examples that I’ve seen taken down for one reason or another. The diameter of the
trunk is probably greater than 6 feet at breast height. Its a fabulous and monumental tree. Coast redwood is not indigenous to Washington, but it thrives here. It’s a little less frost tolerant than Douglas fir. This tree must have been planted around the turn of the last century, when Vashon was something of a hot bed of horticultural fantasies. It has survived many a hard winter, many a howling wind, and has extraordinarily beautiful foliage. Take a gander at it. It’s something to appreciate.

her mustache, and said yes. As the big day approached, I went to the coach and asked when I could pick up the car. He leaned back in his chair and chuckled. “Austin,” he said, “there is no way in hell I am giving my brand new 240z to a kid on prom night.” I stood there dumbstruck. I had the corsage ordered, the powder blue tuxedo rented and a reservation at the Crimson Shrimp — a Red Lobster wannabe. I briefly considered backing out but remembered what Elbows could do to the competition and that was with a referee close by. So instead of driving my date to the prom in a red hot sports car, I was being driven by my date in mom’s beige sedan with headrest doilies. The prom itself was pretty standard fare, bad punch, musicians just beyond garage band status and lots of dance moves you’d like to forget. Then came the last song of the evening, a slow dance. I rubbed my sweaty hands over my ruffled shirt, and we moved to the dance floor where I nervously put my cheek on her collar bone. During the ride home she talked about plans after school, but I wasn’t really listening. My mind was occupied on how the evening would end. How far did she think she would get with me. How far would I let her get, under the shirt or over? I needn’t have worried, though. The date ended with a peck on the cheek and a chuck on the shoulder. I never saw Elbows after that night, and I’ve still never driven a 240z.

and found a delightful surprise, a little-known musical that is funny, clever and well-acted. It moved quickly and easily kept the audience entertained. It is an entirely frivolous story with terrific undertones of satire and the human condition. Do not miss it. It is still going on this weekend. I’m already planning on going back. And secondly, the Vashon Opera production, “Albert Herring.” Yet another frivolous story with complex and interesting music, unusual instrumentation, impressive voices and much humor, again highlighting the human condition. You, too, will come away marveling at what you can drive down the road to see on our island.

High school show is excellent Let me be blunt. “The Drowsy Chaperone,” the Vashon High School spring musical, is, how shall I put it? Hilariously written and acted. Fabulously constructed and produced. And worth every minute of your time and every dime in your wallet. It made my stomach ache with laughter as a wonderful crew of youthful thespians took risks, remembered lengthy lines, hit their comedic stride from beginning to end and delighted the entire audience. Go see the high school musical. You will be glad you did.

The bill’s sponsors call it the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, but our side has labeled it the Deny Americans the Right to Know Act. Please contact your federal representatives about this act. Both are light subjects with seriously competent execution. Firstly, the high school performance of “The Drowsy Chaperone,” a title that would likely inspire no one to purchase tickets. This bill would keep people in the dark about GMOs, thus ensuring a growing number of GMO products in our country. First let me remind you that you’re going to be moving anyway. Starting your packing may get you a bit more focused on looking forward, not back. Second, you may recall that I mentioned that when all of your stuff is visible, potential buyers often end up “visiting” you, and not thinking about buying your house. If they’re local they may even know some of the folks whose pictures are up around the home. They can even start talking about the time they visited a place that you have photos and keepsakes from. They are no longer imagining the house with their belonging in it or thinking about the spaces in the house and how they would use it. I’ve always thought that the first things to be packed when you’re going to move should be your most treasured items. You don’t want to have these things get lost in a packing frenzy once you have a sale. It’s also usually recommended by listing brokers that you have the home as clean and clear of excess items as possible to make it easier to photograph. That always shows better on the Internet. I know you have many fond memories attached to that home. But now that you have a new plan for your lives, it’s time to start packing so that you can move on. Soon you’ll have a new refrigerator for those photos to live on and a lovely new house close to family members and friends. You can unpack all those lovely mementoes of your life and let them become a part of your future.

FRIDAY • 22 Supported Learning Center Plant Sale: The Supported Learning Center (SLC) at Vashon High School will host a plant sale to benefit the class’s life skills/community vocation program. All of the plants were started and grown by SLC students working with student mentors and staff. Plants available for sale include basil, squash, pumpkins, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, artichokes, nasturtiums, cosmos and zinnias. Last Saturday, islanders Marnie Jones-Koenig and her husband Jim Koenig took their 50-foot sailboat to join the growing protest against Shell Oil’s Polar Explorer rig’s residency in Seattle’s Elliot Bay and plans to drill in the Arctic. Jones-Koenig explained that she was in charge of organizing the bigger boats as part of an effort by the Backbone Campaign and other activist groups to create a flotilla by the rig. About a dozen sailboats to shored up the perimeter of the kayaks, paddle boards, native canoes and other small vessels involved in the protest. The couple also hosted four of Seattle’s Raging Grannies activists. Jones-Koenig noted that she observed activists from Greenpeace among the protesters, and there were police, Coast Guard and medic vessels. She said the day “went beautifully. There were no incidents at all.”

IT’S YOUR HISTORY Hubbell, Hubbell, Toil and Rubble
By Chris Austin If you read last week’s article on how our roads came to be named you may recall that Luana Beach Road had a particularly interesting backstory. I thought this merited further investigation. The area just north of Point Robinson on the east side of Maury Island was the type of place only a person with a fertile imagination could envision as a resort. It was marshy, with no roads connecting it to the rest of the island and the closest fresh water was on a distant hilltop. Yet Frank A. Hubbell, a Civil War veteran, former POW and retired railway employee, had just such an idea. In 1910, while in his sixties, Hubbell purchased land from the Ogilvy family and began building cabins and campsites. His wasn’t the only commercial enterprise in this remote part of the island. Skalberg Powder Works began operations in 1908. They produced about a ton of blasting powder every day. Unfortunately the business ended as abruptly as the last episode of the Sopranos. An explosion killed Mr. Skalberg and all five of his employees. They were buried in a mass grave as it was impossible to identify the remains. Hubbell was quite the woodworker and built nearly all of the 27 two-room cabins from driftwood. He also carved a 40-foot tall Uncle Sam replica, a six-foot eagle, and recreated a Civil War fort and a prison cell because who wouldn’t want to be reminded of the horrors of war while on vacation. He also built a 3,000-foot pavilion which was used for skating and dancing. As with any new venture there were a few hiccups. One William Hately and his wife made the two-and-a-half-hour boat ride from Seattle only to be told their room was not quite ready and they ended up staying in a tent for three days. The same thing happened to me at Motel 6. Due to the area’s isolation all customers and provisions came by boat, mostly from Tacoma and Seattle. Milk, however, was provided by a local farm which made deliveries by rowboat. When a passable road connected Luana to the rest of the island the unique hideaway began to lose its mystique. Hubbell sold the operation and in 1927 he died. By then the Luana Beach Resort was on its last legs too. The pavilion burned and the hand built cabins were eventually washed away by the tides once again becoming driftwood. As for how Luana Beach got its name, I reported earlier that it was named after a former girlfriend. Digging a little deeper revealed that the resort was named after Lu and Anna, two erstwhile sweethearts from Hubbell’s youth. Photographer reveals her mind’s eye in island show By JULI GOETZ MORSER Staff Writer

Island photographer Lori Kay likes shapes. The more repetitive the shape is, the better. They grab her attention as does color, especially the wildly saturated colors of the spectrum. So when Kay saw an oddly shaped rowboat painted a vibrant red and tied up under the repetitive arches at Dockton Park marina, she zeroed in on her subject and snapped a winning photograph. “Ginny,” as the photograph — and rowboat — is called, recently won the Judge’s Award in Still Life at the annual Artist Association of Ocean Shores contest. Meanwhile back on Vashon, Kay’s photo image Giclée fine art prints are brightening the walls at Café Luna in an exhibit that opened last month and is being held over until the end of May. Called “Metal & Glass,” the show is a still life study of abandoned factory buildings and machinery near the Aberdeen waterfront. Kay said each photograph stands alone, but as a group “these images provide a sense of the harsh edges of human labor. ... The industrial metal and glass engaged my fascination for the possibilities it presented.” To achieve the results she wanted — transforming stark objects and hard edges into painterly images — Kay spent long hours on each photograph, adjusting the color and applying digital techniques that mimic what she learned as a student working in the dark room of her high school. The original photograph ended up providing the bones for Kay’s new creative process.
“In this show the (bones) are the steel doors, the crosshatched windows, the multiplicity of lines. The images have almost no color, so I had to add that. I wanted to use colors that were complimentary to the repetitive shapes.” Though Kay loves color, there was a brief time in her life when she went colorblind, which she discovered on her way to take the California bar exam. Kay had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when she was 19, and over the course of her life the disease has raised its debilitating head when she experiences a great deal of stress. And as a defense attorney in Seattle and the only women for a long time who took murder cases on a regular basis, Kay and stress were well acquainted. When Kay received a second life-changing diagnosis in 2004, she closed the door on the legal world and opened a new one that led to her 20-year pursuit of photography. An island resident since 1992, Kay has exhibited at various venues on the island including Heron’s Nest, where she was the featured artist last October, and where her work remains on continuous display. Kay is not sure if she’ll continue with the Giclée process, saying the series was unique and special for the Aberdeen subjects, but she liked using the new techniques because of what it allowed her to do. “To create the image seen in my mind when I took the photograph takes thought and technical work, along with software tools. The result of this work ... is a photograph showing my intent, my ‘mind’s eye’ view of the subject photographed.”
Portraits showcase faces of Latino community By JULI GOETZ MORSER Staff Writer
Eight years ago, island painter Pam Ingalls hung a portrait exhibition called “Facing Vashon” at The Hardware Store Restaurant gallery. The show inspired Ingalls to travel to other parts of the world — like Africa and Guatemala — to paint the people she met in the villages she visited for an annual spring portrait exhibit. This year, Ingalls stayed close to home, choosing to paint members of the island’s Latino community for her current show “Facing Latinos on Vashon Island.” “We have this other community on Vashon,” Ingalls said, “which is so interesting but mostly invisible, and I wanted to connect the two communities as the start of a bridge.” The show will be up until the end of May. As is her custom, Ingalls will donate some of the proceeds to the Latino community. “Some of the money goes back to the people I paint,” Ingalls said. “It’s my way of giving back.”

Two high school seniors recognized for achievement, leadership By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer
Two students from Vashon recently earned the distinction of being named National Merit Scholarship finalists, an honor awarded to academically talented students. Sage Levin, a senior at Vashon High School, and Graham Peet, a senior at The Northwest School, were among 16,000 students from across the country named semi-finalists last fall after they scored in the top 1 percent on the PSAT exam. They proceeded to the finalist rank after submitting scholarship applications that included information on their participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities and honors they have received. Levin, the son of Lesley Reed and Denny Levin, will attend the University of Washington in the fall and pursue a career in the STEM fields. VHS counselor Laurie Martin praised Levin. “I think he is remarkable,” she said. “I feel he has definitely achieved a lot in his scholastic endeavors. ... He will find a huge amount of success in college.” Levin’s interests outside of school
include sailing, and he said he has volunteered hundreds of hours on the schooner Adventuress, a 133-foot long historic sailing vessel that takes passengers and teaches green living. Graham Peet plans to attend Haverford College in Philadelphia this fall and study economics. The son of Andrew Peet and Sam Lanier, he received a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship. The agency awarded just 2,500 of these scholarships to the pool of more 15,000 students who applied. The panel of judges selected those who have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies, according to a press release. Additionally, the number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors. Outside of school, Peet says he spends his time running and playing the violin. His advisor at The Northwest School, Cecilia Tung, called him one of the brightest, hardest working students she has worked with. “He is insightful and meticulous,” she said. “He does his work seemingly effortlessly, but with a sense of humor.”

As control of the property was in question last week, Matthews quietly began an open house there, putting a sign up in front of the house. A flyer read that the garden would be open Monday through Sunday and that the farmhouse would also be open with a slideshow and exhibit Friday through Sunday. The flier went on to say that the property will be open at least 10 days each month from June through October. One criticism of Matthews and her former board has been that the site has not been regularly opened to the public, as promised when the property was purchased years ago. In a court brief filed last Thursday, the Friends of Mukai, who opposed the stay, called the open house posturing on the part of Matthews’ group. The weeklong event was apparently not advertised other than on a sandwich board placed outside the property, at the end of 107th Avenue. “The Court may and should conclude that the defendants developed this new interest in opening the property simply to counter the pending motion,” the court brief reads. “If the Court issues a stay, the defendants will no doubt return to their

The Court of Appeals granted a temporary stay, meaning Matthews could maintain control of Island Landmarks and the property until the court has an opportunity to decide who has control during the duration of the appeal. Legal arguments over that issue will take place via phone in about two weeks. “I’m not that surprised, but I’m disappointed,” said Lynn Greiner, a Friends of Mukai board member and attorney, of the temporary stay. “It’s only for a couple weeks, and we’ll have a chance to respond.” Greiner and other board members said they still feel confident they will prevail in time, especially with what they called a strong ruling in Superior Court. They’ve argued in court that they’d like to gain access to the property as soon as possible to start needed repairs and begin a study on how best to preserve the house. Pearson noted that while Matthews has said she can’t afford to do work at the house, the group has grant funding in hand and the support of several government agencies and historical preservation organizations. “They will not work with her again,” she said of Matthews. “There are all kinds of resources now for legitimate nonprofits to move forward with historical projects.”

Islander creating public garden for pollinators By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer
At a time when the decline of the bee population is frequently in the news, one islander has begun creating a garden specifically for bees and other pollinators. Gene Kuhns, who is a beekeeper himself, recently obtained a $900 grant from his employer, McDonald Miller, for the project, which will be located in a far corner of the Village Green. “We want to attract as many butterflies and native bees as possible,” he said. Just as important as the plants themselves, Kuhns said, will be the educational component of the garden. A placard with information will be included, showing the life cycle of butterflies and bees and explaining how habitat loss and the misuse of chemicals have affected pollinators. Kuhns added he hopes that the garden will inspire islanders to plant with bees and butterflies in mind and include plants that bloom from spring through fall. “We are trying to encour-

One-third of our food sources are dependent on pollinators, he said, making it vital that people recognize their importance. “If we do not do more to restore habitat and diminish chemical use, we are going to be hurting, not just on Vashon, but the human population as a whole,” he said. Kuhns has been working with the Vashon Island
Growers Association (VIGA) on the project, and Margot Boyer, VIGA’s secretary and a beekeeper, is serving as the groups liaison. Boyer noted that VIGA’s mission is to promote agriculture, and a pollinator garden fits into that picture well. Native bees pollinate native plants, she said, but honeybees, which were imported with European settlers, are needed to pollinate many agricultural crops, including what many
think of as common, local foods, such as apples. “You cannot have apples without honeybees,” she added. Both Boyer and Kuhns stress that the public need not worry about getting stung. While hornets and wasps are prone to stinging, honeybees only sting when they or their hives are threatened, Kuhns said. “I can stand or work for hours in the garden very near our hive with honeybees buzzing all around me and never get stung,” he said. Kuhns is now working with local vendors to buy the plants he will use, including native plants, sunflowers and coneflowers. However, he said he would appreciate plants that islanders may wish to donate. He also welcomes volunteers, including children, to help plant, with an event scheduled for this Saturday during the farmers market. The event will include a raffle for a professionally installed pollinator garden at the winner’s home. Volunteers should stop by between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Village Green.

Crew qualifies eight boats for Nationals competition Baseball team ends season

Two and a half seconds. In this weekend’s NASCAR race, that distance equated to about 700 feet. In the Preakness Stakes horse race, about 130 feet. And in Sunday’s junior men’s lightweight four crew final, 12 feet. Rowing is a sport of perfection and repetition. Over the 2,000-meter course, 12 feet equates to an extra half-inch per stroke. On Sunday, Vashon’s crew of Cole Puckett (stroke), Jack Mask, Josh Davis, David Ngyuen and coxswain Callie Andrews dug deep but couldn’t find that extra half inch per stroke, placing fourth and barely missing a trip to Junior Nationals in Florida in three weeks. A year’s worth of hard practice and strict diets came up just short. It was a relatively rare disappointment in an otherwise successful weekend of rowing that saw the junior crew consistently finishing in second place. In fact, with 36 races rowed over the three-day event (including heats, timed finals and finals) Vashon’s crew placed second in half of them. Vancouver Lake in Southwest Washington is the annual venue for the Northwest Regional Rowing championships and presented smooth conditions that for much of the weekend were rippled only by the blades pulling through the water and the bald eagles snatching fish from the shallows. For junior varsity and novice rowers, this event is the season finale, and the JV women’s double with Katrina Heffernan and Caprial Turner made the most of their opportunity with a thrilling victory (and Vashon’s only gold medal) over rival Seattle Rowing Center, and it came down to a sprint over the last 100 meters. Silver-medal winners in non-Nationals qualifying races were the women’s novice double and lightweight single and the men’s youth and novice coxed quads. The men’s and women’s high school eights took home gold medals for winning their timed finals,

The high school eight races are the concluding races at the regatta and often feature rowers in elaborate costumes chanting and singing school fight songs at the starting line (and occasionally down the course). Vashon took 35 rowers and coxswains to this event, and entered 24 boats in 22 races with all but five returning with a medal. Out of a possible 13 boats and 20 team members eligible for Nationals at the regatta’s conclusion, Vashon had qualified eight boats and 14 rowers. That puts Vashon third in the nation for number of qualifying boats behind only Oklahoma City with 16 and Seattle Rowing Center with 11. Silver medalists were the women’s lightweight double, double, pair and lightweight four and the men’s quad. Vashon also won bronze medals in the women’s lightweight double and men’s single and double. Rowers qualifying for Nationals are Fletcher Call, Ally

The Vashon Pirates baseball team lost both district playoff games last week by tight scores, ending its season. The team had the much-anticipated matchup against the Klahowya Eagles at Charles Wright in Tacoma on May 14. The Eagles have held the number one ranking in the state all season. The Pirates lost, 2-0. Although they had four walks and only four strikeouts, they could only manage one hit, a sharp shot down the left field line by Harper Whitney. Logan Hawkins got the start from the mound and pitched a solid four and twothird innings. He gave up five hits, five walks and had five strikeouts. Ashton Dulfer came on in relief and closed the game out. The following day, at the same Charles Wright field, Vashon faced league rival Cascade Christian in a tense loser-out game. The Pirates dropped this one, 3-0, ending their hopes of going on to the state tournament. Josh Hruska Myer got the start, and the Cougars were able to capitalize on 10 hits for their three runs. Myer walked just one batter and struck out three. Dulfer again looked sharp, pitching the final inning. The Pirate bats were again silent as the only offense came courtesy of two hits by Hawkins. The Pirates had two walks that they did not capitalize on, and they struck out six times. Coach Steve Hall and the players were left unsatisfied with how the season ended. “I was very disappointed with our ability to adjust and hit off of good pitching. We struggled all year with that, and it really cost us a state berth,” Hall said. “We really wanted to send Josh off with a bang and didn’t get it done. With everyone back next year but Myer, I’m expecting us to get right back into the state tournament. It was a... successful year, and I want to thank all the players and coaching staff for their hard work and dedication.”

Several track athletes head to district meet Pirate softball closes
out season with a win

The Pirate track and field team competed in the Nisqually League championship meet held at Fife high school last Friday and Saturday. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams finished fifth in the five-team league in overall team points. The boys’ team will send freshman Gerry Gerrior to the district track meet, as he finished third in the 100 meters in 11.85 and fourth in the 200 meters in 24.97. Other highlights from the boys included freshman Hunter Justis setting a personal record in the 1,600 in 5:02 and in the 300-meter hurdles in 50.06. Freshman Chase Tucker set a personal record (PR) in the triple jump at 31 feet, 4 inches. Senior Mason Carter set his PR in the discus at 89 feet, 9 inches, and senior Aaron Kitchener saved his last 800-meter race to set his personal best at 2:29. The girls are sending eight competitors to the district meet. To qualify for districts, athletes have to finish in the top four. Senior Emily Browne was the Nisqually League champion in the triple jump with a mark of 31 feet, 7 inches. Senior Anna Rykman placed fourth in the triple jump with a PR of 30 feet, 4.5 inches. Junior Natalie VanDevanter set her personal record in the discus with a throw of 85 feet, 1 inch to place second overall. Sophomore Kat Andrus placed fourth in javelin with a throw of 85 feet, 11 inches. In the running events, junior Annika Hille placed second in the 100 meters in 12.71, which is her personal record, and second in the 200 meters in 26.46. Hille also placed third in the long jump at 15 feet, 4 inches. Sophomore Eva Anderson placed fourth in the 800 meters in 2:43. In the preliminary heat on Friday, Anderson set a PR in 2:38. In the 1,600, Anderson finished third with a PR of 5:48. Sophmore Aria Mildon will move on to districts in the 3,200 meters. She finished fourth in 13:24. The girls four-by-100 team, consisting of Hille, Browne, Anderson and sophomore Annie Muller, finished third in 54.88. Abigail Kim, who lives on the island and represents Seattle Christian, took the Nisqually League title in three events. Kim placed first in the 100 meters in 12.46, 200 meters in 25.72 and the long jump with a leap of 18, feet 1
The Vashon Pirate softball team closed out its regular season with a big win at the home field on Friday, May 15. Behind the pitching of freshman Taylor Eastly, the team beat Forest Ridge by a score of 8-2. Game highlights included the great pitching of Eastly, coupled with solid defensive play and a monster home run by Lilly Hennessey. Sophomore Makenna McVey reached base on each at bat and scored four of the runs. Junior Rayanna Weller pitched the second half of the game and helped bring the victory home for the girls. Other highlights included a perfect bunt by sophomore Hannah McArthur and a double by junior Mallory Breen. Fans got to witness chemistry in motion as the team finished on an up note for the season, after winning just the one game. Pirate tennis had strong season, looks ahead Junior varsity team has much potential for next year By LISA BROUGHAM For The Beachcomber
Vashon High School girls’ tennis got off to a great start this season with an exceptionally large turnout. Emphasizing technical skills development, team unity and having fun, there was no shortage of enthusiasm. Despite numerous rainouts along the way, most of the games were eventually rescheduled, resulting in great league and nonleague matches played by season’s end, with the Pirates finishing second in the league. Vashon’s top two singles players and top two doubles teams participated in the Nisqually League tournament on May 11, which unfortunately
took two days due to rain. The number one varsity singles player Taryn Mulvihill, who played strong all season, placed second at the league tournament and will advance to district playoffs next week. Visiting exchange student Ida Johansen, who played number two singles, was a welcome addition to the team this year, had a great season playing for the Pirates and earned third place at the league tournament. Number one doubles team Emmaline Whittwer and Siena Jannetty progressed together throughout the season and played a close match at League, narrowly missing Districts, instead landing as alternates. Number two doubles team Sierra Richter and Julia Denison played well together, and by the end of the season showed they had really progressed as tennis partners. Newcomer Lizy Maciejewski con-
tinually held her own in singles play and will be an asset to next year’s team. Seniors Ellie Bacchus, Paige Bulson, Sinath Hurd, Meagan Whitman and senior team captains Lily Lott and Julia Denison provided leadership and steady play to finish their tennis experience on a high note, playing some of their best matches ever. Most of these seniors have been in the program all four years and will be greatly missed. The junior varsity team’s improvement was nothing short of dramatic and shows so much potential for next year. A blend of new talent combined with seasoned experience has Vashon tennis already looking forward to the coming season. — Lisa Brougham is the varsity tennis coach.

County certifies final park district levy vote Commissioners disagree on meaning of narrow victory By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer
King County Elections certified the results of the recent election on May 12, with the Vashon Park District levy passing with 60.63 percent of the vote. By state law, the levy requires 60 percent of the vote to be approved, and from a few days after the election on, the ballot count stayed just above that mark. The measure passed by fewer than 20 votes out of the 3,485 votes counted. At the park district’s regular board meeting that night, commissioners responded with mixed reactions to the results. “This is where I always run into trouble with The Beachcomber,” said Bill Ameling. “It’s adjectives. Did it barely pass? Or did it kick butt 60-40?” Joe Wubbold, who frequently attends park district meet-
ings, challenged Ameling, noting the small margin by which the levy passed and stating that he knew at least 30 people who voted yes because of the work by the Friends of the Parks, a campaign group organized by Kristin Pesman “This levy would not have passed had Kristin and the Friends of the Parks not done the work they did,” Wubbold said. Both Lu-Ann Branch and Doug Ostrom expressed different views than Ameling, who said he interpreted the results to mean that people like the park district and are happy. “I don’t think we can interpret it as people being happy with the park district,” Ostrom said. “They want the park district to continue. That is something quite different than being happy with it.” Ameling countered that Ostrom could not be sure of that interpretation. “When you run for election, you’ll state what you state, and you’ll see who likes you or don’t. That is the only way you can tell what is going on. … The only time you know how the island truly feels is when they all vote. The island said we want a park district.”

Beyond being good with numbers, Skillman said he has good external and internal communication skills. Skillman, who filed early in the week, has lived on the island for 20 years and noted that politics can be messy at the local level. “We have room for a lot of different opinions. The idea is to respect those opinions,” he said. Like Skillman, Karen Gardner was one of the first islanders to file last week for the November election. “I love the parks on Vashon and care deeply about Vashon’s future,” she said. Gardner has lived on Vashon for three years and has had property on the island for five. While she has not been politically involved on Vashon until now, she said the concerns for the district are well known and she believes she could be helpful. Gardner is a retired computer scientist. After she retired, she said, she was free to follow her passion, returned to school and earned a degree in horticulture. Currently, she is finishing up further education on soil science and is conducting a bioremediation project in a forest at the south end of the island, using microorganisms in an effort to sequester arsenic in the soil. “I have a deeply embedded love of plants and growing things and the environment,” she said. Carrie Carstairs passed away in her home in Prescott Arizona on the morning of Friday, May 8th. She was 35 years old. Carrie’s big energy and vibrant passion for the things she cared about impacted everyone she knew. Carrie grew up on Vashon Island and lived many of her adult years as a well-loved trainer, mentor and riding instructor in Kirkland, WA. She was a rider with rare talent, a spirited competitor whether in the saddle or in conversation and she had an unbelievable way with the wild animals she cared for and loved so deeply in her work as a keeper at the sanctuary. attending and recording park district meetings since 2012. “I have been involved and watching for almost three years now, and having seen the dysfunction of the board, I felt I could contribute,” he said. Ray, also a member of the Friends of the Pool, said if elected, he would take a broad view. “I do have a special interest in swimming,” he said, “but (a board member) must be fair to all sports and all activities.” Currently, one of the problems with the park district is that its mission is not as clear as it should be, he said, and he also believes the board micromanages to a large extent. “I would just as soon be part of a board that would step back and not be so heavy handed in how things are run there,” he said. Ray noted that he filed for Position 5, which Harvey currently holds. He filed for that position, he said, not because he was determined to compete against Harvey, but because several people who watch the park district were paying attention to who had filed and wanted to ensure that if Ameling also filed, he would be faced with a primary election. “It was in our sites that it would be really good for there to be a primary,” he said. Ameling filed on Friday, switching from Position 1 to 5. The primary is scheduled for Aug. 4. The top two winners will proceed to the general election, which is slated for Nov. 3.
Richard Lowell Rhoads June 2, 1931 – April 30, 2015 Richard (Dick) Rhoads died peacefully at his granddaughter’s home after succumbing to cancer. He is survived by his daughters Ahlyshawndra (Shawn) and husband David, and Erin and husband Craig; sisters Carolyn (Lynne), Nola and half-siblings: Quindara, Jeannette and Terry; grandchildren Kelsey and husband John, Ryan and wife Nicole, Anthony and Meri, and Derrick, as well as his nephews Dale and wife Natalie, Tim and wife Trina, Eddie and wife Norma Jean and Eric, and foster son Ruben. With the help of Franciscan Hospice and Palliative Care, the family was able to bring him home to Kelsey’s house where his friends and family, whom loved him very much, were able to say good-bye to Dad/Grampa/Dick in a quiet and loving setting. Dick was very happy on Vashon. He originally bought the property while attending the University of Washington and then between marriage, the death of his wife, Gwynn, and traveling to Mexico to live with his daughters, he didn’t come back to his house on Vashon until around 1970. By then the house was in a state of disrepair and, in his own personal style, he fixed it up to be able to live there quite happily.
