For those looking to toss their hats into the political ring, time is running short. In King County, like everywhere else, the official filing period for the fall election season concludes with the close of business today, Friday. Filing opened Monday morning. This year’s campaign cycle includes an Aug. 4 primary and a Nov. 3 general election. Covington mom, daughter walked in survivor show BY SARAH WEHMANN Reporter

others and daughters tend to do a lot of activities together like shopping, going out to lunch or taking trips. But for one duo from Covington, their activity was beating cancer. Ann and Katie Collier both beat cancer and on May 1 they participated in the Gilda’s Club
A community workforce agreement between Tahoma School District and a nonprofit organization has created tension, which has gone public. Over the last 15 months, Skanska, the contractor TAHOMA working on SCHOOL the new high DISTRICT school project for the district, and Sound Alliance have been in private negotiations over a community workforce agreement. The issue is pre-hire agreements setting terms and conditions of employment for the construction of the new high school project. Sound Alliance is a nonprofit organization that represents religious and educational institutions as well as labor unions. The organization helped the Voice
Surviving Style Fashion Show and luncheon. Ann graduated from Kentridge High School and now lives in Covington where she raised her five children. Katie is the youngest of the five. In February of 2008, the first diagnosis was delivered. Ann was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). According to breastcancer.org, DCIS is the most common type of non-invasive breast cancer.
Ann said in her case, it appeared to be non-invasive until she had a partial lumpectomy. After that, she said, “It was discovered that I didn’t have any clean margins.” She added that she also had an invaded lymph node. During Ann’s fight she had 11 surgeries over the course of three years, a total of 56 weeks of chemotherapy and participated in a three year clinical drug trial. During her treatments she said she was able to continue working at Valley Medical Center and did what she had the strength and time to do. [ more SURVIVORS page 6 ]

CRAFT VENDORS SOUGHT FOR COVINGTON DAYS FESTIVAL
The Covington City Council will hold a public hearing on the proposed six-year transportation improvement program at its City Council meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday May 26. The purpose of the public hearing is to receive comments on the proposed six-year transportation improvement program. A list of possible projects is available from the Public Works Department at Covington City Hall. Questions may be directed to Bob Lindskov, city engineer. The city of Covington is seeking craft vendor applications for the Covington Days Festival, scheduled for July 18 and 19. An official SeaFair-sanctioned event, Covington Days has been a staple in the community since 1986. The festival is always the third weekend in July. Its focus is on providing family fun while promoting community spirit. The festival kicks off on Saturday with the parade at 10 a.m. Afterwards, the festival grounds come alive with arts and crafts, carnival games, exhibitors, kid and family activities, on stage entertainment, inflatable toys, watermelon eating contest. According to Chrastil, the district has not upheld all of its promises made before the bond measure was passed. The district disputes Chrastil’s claim. Chrastil said Sound Alliance’s presentation was made during public comment after attempts to meet with members of the board were denied. Patterson said the board or district administrators haven’t met with Sound Alliance exclusively because the contractor is negotiating on their behalf. The agreement the district made with Sound Alliance in 2013 was informal, Patterson said. it was a bit worn out before we replaced it. Then we had kids. We really weren’t willing put money into a new carpet with messes little babies and toddlers make; most specifically my youngest. No matter where I put her on a blanket, which was in the middle of the living room floor, she seemed able to flip herself to her stomach, drag herself to the edge of the blanket and puke just off the border. Since I put the blanket in approximately the same place every time I put her down to play, there was an odd square of dark stains like something out of a crime scene. Between that phase and potty training, we waited. So when my youngest turned three and was well beyond potty training and throwing up, we took the plunge and got a new carpet. I think it was called “spaghetti vernais.” I don’t know if that’s the exactly the term they used, but it’s what sticks in my mind. It’s basically just an updated version of the shag carpets that were so popular in the 70s, although it’s a pleasGretchen Leigh
I was vacuuming the carpet the other day, getting ready for Mother’s Day. I’ll be having my mother and my mother-in-law over for a nice luncheon. I’m cooking even though I’m a mother, too. It’s what I really enjoy doing and, quite frankly, I think it’s much easier to have people over to my house than to load the family and my own mother up in the car to see my mother-in-law. She doesn’t drive, so we either pick her up and bring her here or all of us go to her. Besides, it’s especially nice for me to cook for different palates besides my family. They usually like what I cook, but don’t appreciate some of the foods I like. However, I digress. I am actually trying to write about the carpet I was vacuuming when I started this column. When we moved into this house 23 years ago, the people who owned it had only been here a year and a half. They had done some light, cosmetic remodeling, including a cheap, gray carpet. I never liked the carpet or its color. However, because it was new, we figured we’d wait until

ant brown rather than an avocado green. However, I often think about how I chose wrong – to save on money – I got less strands per square inch, making the carpet less full. It’s fine, though, and doesn’t rule my every waking moment; but now that my daughter is 17 years old and some of my tastes have changed, I’d kind of like to get a new carpet. We only have a small living room and hallway that’s carpeted, so it probably wouldn’t even be that expensive. I’m not sure what style I’d get, I’d probably even get a similar color of brown. So I was vacuuming away, thinking about how I could probably justify a new carpet now that it’s been 14 years. I was dreaming about whether I’d step outside my comfort zone and get a patterned carpet, which seems a big commitment, like deciding on a tattoo, or maybe just another shag. I couldn’t visualize a really short carpet. As I let the cat in the front door, I was imagining something really plush that would make people want to come in and roll around on the floor. She got a bite to eat, then as I turned the vacuum back on, she barfed right next to the coffee table. This is why we moms can’t have nice things.

Kelley’s legacy gone in a flash Jerry Cornfield
It took 207 days of campaigning through two elections in 2012 for Troy Xavier Kelley to secure the job as Washington’s state auditor. It required only a few minutes Monday to erase nearly every scratch of evidence he is still in office. At 1 p.m. that day, the Tacoma Democrat began an unpaid leave to fight the batch of federal criminal charges on which he was indicted last month. Moments later, Kelley’s government email account was disabled and his mug shot and biography disappeared from the agency website. His name no longer adorns the twice-a-week emails distributing the latest crop of local government audits. As his digital footprints got deleted, Kelley’s least-visible employee was scrubbed away, too, with the firing of a part-time staffer living out of state who is a personal friend, political supporter and professional confidante of Kelley’s. Jan Jutte, the respected veteran bureaucrat entrusted with the keys and codes to the operation in Kelley’s absence, ordered the expunging that has effectively erased her boss from the political landscape. She so thoroughly purged his presence that it’s made him seem like the answer to a “Jeopardy!” answer: “He is the only indicted elected official in Washington to ever abandon but not resign a post.” Even though he’s gone, Kelley might still get a raise and retain his spot in the line of succession for governor. The Washington Citizens Commission on Salaries for Elected Officials wants to give the state auditor a 4 percent pay hike over the next

O D I D Y O U K N O W ? : According to Wikipedia, the Green Bay Packers, founded 1919, is the oldest NFL franchise in
two years. At least commissioners did in January, when they approved a recommendation to boost Kelley’s annual salary from $116,950 to $121,628 on Sept. 1 and to $124,061 the following September. They acted before Kelley’s indictment on federal charges, which include tax evasion and lying to investigators, and before his denial of wrongdoing and departure on an indefinite leave of absence. Commissioners will have those facts in front of them when they sit down to take final action on the pay hike May 13 in Olympia. Meanwhile, Kelley’s status as the legally elected state auditor might preserve his spot as the fourth in line to serve as governor. Article 1, Section 10 of the state constitution lays out who’s in charge if Gov. Jay Inslee is unable to do the job. Lt. Gov. Brad Owen is first up. If he can’t do it, the reins go to Secretary of State
Kim Wyman, then Treasurer Jim McIntire and then the auditor, Kelley. There’s never been a serious enough disruption of leadership to put the auditor in charge. It wasn’t clear this week what would happen if it did occur with Kelley in office but on leave. (It’s a question the attorney general hasn’t been formally asked to consider.) Since everyone ahead of Kelley in the order of succession wants him to immediately resign, they will no doubt be sure to not be out of state all at the same time to avoid any chance Kelley could be called to serve as governor — even for a few minutes. Reasons for Planning Commission decision (The) Planning Commission added the residential component to the Comprehensive Plan based on the following criteria. 1. Maple Valley housing availability is limited in this category. Part of the justification is to provide some housing for people employed in the commercial developments. Also, the city must attempt to provide closer to 12 percent of its housing in multifamily units in order to meet the (King) County wide goal of housing for all levels of income. If we ignore
this goal, or attempt to put it off to the future, we risk the possibility of losing out on funding for county and state matching funds on infrastructure projects. 2. The desire is that much of the multifamily housing will be devoted to senior apartments minimizing effect on traffic and school district. Also some of the apartments planned for will be studio and one bedroom type minimizing the effect on schools. 3. Contacts with commercial builders, investors, and architects indicated no interest in developing commercial properties in Maple Valley. 4. Most of the vacant commercial land has been on the market for over eight years with no brick and mortar interest generated.
5. Comprehensive studies showed that multifamily housing would generate the most income (by a significant margin)to the city in tax revenue. 6. City staff was unable to provide believable statistics to prove that commercial would generate greater tax revenue. 7. City staff provided minimal and untimely information from the Tahoma School District as to potential crowding in the schools. 8. The city has shown only lip service to promotion of EDC (Economic Development Council) and the IEDC (International Economic Development Council) report. In addition they did not present any targeted plan to with checks and balances to promote
economic development in the future. 9. (The) Planning Commission felt that with allowing some residential construction that the owners would hold the rest of the land for commercial development. 10. The approval of multifamily would provide maximum tax income to the city in the shortest amount of time. Thus the fiscal cliff could possibly be avoided. I feel that it is very important to understand the process that Planning Commission used in making this final decision. They worked long and hard in what was very difficult in all the ways enumerated above.

DRUNKENNESS • On May 8 around 6:45 p.m. officers responded to Pizza Hut to the report of an extremely intoxicated woman who appeared to have been found passed out behind the building. The report stated she was unable to speak, stand and she had urinated on herself. Medics transported her to Multi Care for detoxing.
ACCIDENT • On May 9 at 2:25 a.m. officers arrested the driver of a vehicle who crashed into a tree and a fence. The report stated the driver was arrested for driving under the influence.
FIREARM • On May 9 it was reported that an unknown suspect shot one round at a coffee stand overnight while it was closed. According to the report the bullet entered through the east window and did not break through the west facing window. • On May 9 officers responded to reports that an unknown suspect had shot a bullet into the reporting party’s vehicle during the night. The shot caused damage to the fender and trunk.
ASSAULT • On May 9 at 6:30 p.m. officers responded to reports of an unknown male punching through a car window. The report stated the assault was caused by road rage.
THREATS • Officers responded to reports that a husband had threatened to kill his wife. The wife reported that during an argument her husband said that but then later denied it. According to the report, the wife does not believe the husband would carry out the threats.

Haz mat incident sends five to hospital Editor’s note: The following is a release from Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority. On May 11 five employees at a local company in the 19800 block of 84 Ave. S. in Kent were sent to local hospitals for treatment following exposure to a possible airborne chemical. The Kent Fire Department was dispatched to the call at 9:04 am, after the employees reported to the company’s nurse station complaining of shortness of breath and dizziness. All the employees worked in the same area of
the building. One other person was treated at the property for a medical issue unrelated to the hazardous material incident. The call was upgraded to include hazardous materials teams from not only Kent but from throughout south King County. This type of response is normal and necessary in order to have the number of hazardous materials technicians needed to investigate and mitigate a chemical problem on scene. A team sent in to determine what took place was unable to find any obvious
problem. The building was ventilated to remove any remaining airborne chemicals. It will be up to the company to investigate what was happening at the time of the incident and to take any measures necessary to prevent it from happening in the future. At no time was anyone outside the building in any danger.

During her fight, Ann said she had three scares with mortality but said it is “quite possible (that God kept me around) to share my story and encourage others along their way.”
From her story, Ann hopes that people will learn there is hope for those battling cancer. Her advice to those fighting or learning of a diagnosis, is to take “one day,
one week, one treatment at a time.” She added that battling cancer is a tough process and “nobody can do it for you.” Less than four years after

Technology improves individualized learning Reporter
When I was in the fourth grade, my classroom was selected to be one of the first classes in the district to use a smart television. In 1999, this smart television prototype was a monster – it took up a whole corner of the room, and a ring of three or four of the tallest students could maybe encircle it by linking hands. Of course, the best days we had in class were when we could go up to the television and use one of it’s magnetic pens to solve a problem or write an example for the whole class to see. It was way more fun than using those boring old whiteboards and overhead projectors, although it took way more time and effort to turn on the smart TV (a good solid five minutes) and then calibrating it (another two or three) than it would to use almost anything else. Still, I would argue that my level of interest and involvement in the classroom through using state-of-the-art technology helped me learn lessons and retain the information better than a sitting in class, bored and uninterested. The Sumner School District is thinking along those same lines. If using technology can keep kids interested and focused in school, they’ll learn more, retain more, and be overall better students.
Increases in Learning & Productivity One of the first things I noticed when I sat with Sandy Maynard, the chief technology officer in the Sumner School District, was the piles of laptop boxes stored in her office. Other young adults may remember during their high school years there were only two or three laptop carts that would roll around the school, and it was up to teachers to plan way ahead of time to coordinate when they would need the computers. Maynard said that will no longer be a problem in the next three years, and the evidence was stacked right behind her. “In the state of Washington, we have the largest deployment of Chromebooks per student,” Maynard said. “We have just under 5,000 Chromebooks that are in the district.” According to Maynard, only third, fourth, fifth, sixth and ninth grade classes currently have access to an individual Chromebook in their classroom. But by 2017, all students from third grade through 12 grade will be using Chromebooks in their classrooms, Maynard said. The Chromebooks are a sleek product. Unlike traditional desktop computer or even mainstream laptops, which is preloaded with software programs, Chromebooks only run the Google Chrome web browser. The lack of desktop applications may seem counterintuitive when it comes to

student education, but it does two things for students. First, the lack of software makes the Chromebooks highly usable in a classroom setting. “We have skimmed time off of classroom instruction because kids can get into stuff almost instantly,” Maynard said. “As fast as you can (log in), you are there. So the productivity is high.” The school district found that traditional
desktops and laptops can take up to four minutes to log in and be ready for students use, according to Maynard. I recall my filmmaking class in high school and waiting for as long as 10 minutes for the clunky, obsolete desktops to get all set up for me to edit my projects. In contrast, the Chrome desktops are much quicker, speeding up the login process up to two minutes or less, said [ more LEARNING page 8 ]

As Maynard explained later in our talk, there are countless web programs and websites that teachers can use to individualize classroom learning. Not being chained to software may mean more work for teachers, as they would be responsible for finding information and developing new lessons, but the students can greatly benefit from learning outside the box.
Applying Teaching Applications As technology becomes more and more common in the classroom, education apps for laptops, tablets and phones
are becoming commonplace. Although Maynard said the Sumner School District doesn’t yet have an official list of apps for teachers to use, the Google Play Store already has a few dozen free apps for teachers to use in their classroom. One app is called Common Core. Common Core is a set of collection of academic standards for math and language arts used in Washington state. The Common Core app, developed by MasteryConnect, allows students, teachers and interested parents to view and understand the language arts and math standards set for kindergarten through 12th grade. Socrative Teacher is also a free app, designed to be able to quiz students quickly on a topic and give them and the teacher instant feedback on how the class is performing. Socrative Teacher is also able to ask open-ended questions to which students can respond, and then vote on which answer is the most correct.

Online education Educational websites have come a long way since I was in school. I remember getting ready for summer vacation and teachers passing out lists of kid and student-friendly websites that could help us stay sharp on what we learned doing the school year. Problem was, you couldn’t learn from the websites. If you didn’t get the concept in school, there was a slim chance the website would walk you through a lesson so you could learn it. But with advances in both education and technology, some educational websites have successfully taken off and are helping students, teachers and even parents across the world learn math, science and language arts. One website is IXl (www.ixl.com), which has materials for kindergarten through 12th graders in math and language arts. The website breaks down both subjects into digestible lessons that often start with a question, like asking about the domain and range of a graph is or where a comma should be placed in a sentence. If you don’t know the answer, don’t worry. The website will walk you through why you got the question wrong, give additional examples of similar problems, and help you correct your answer. Once you feel comfortable with the concept, you move on to the next question. The website keeps track of how many questions you get right and how long it takes you to answer a strings of questions. Another website is Khan Academy (www.khanacademy. org). Unlike IXL, Khan Academy has topics ranging from math and language arts to science, economics and finance, arts and humanities, computing and test prep. The website will start users off with warmup questions to determine your starting level, so users aren’t bored by re-learning fundamentals. After finishing up the warmups, the website will let users practice what they think they need assistance on, or continue practicing what they already know until those skills are mastered. Videos are available for each skill for those who don’t understand a question or topic. Just remember to keep a pen and paper handy for each website though – workspace isn’t included online.

Kentlake won 4-2 and next played Wednesday in a loser out game.
Tahoma tennis honored for academics The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) along with the Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires announced the 2015 spring team academic state champions. turn up the color volume by adding these around an evergreen shrub or cascading from a mixed basket. Supertunias are super easy to grow in sun or semi shade. Wave Petunias – oceans of color from groundcover petunias that will swamp the garden with a sea of blooms. If you have a large space to fill, look for the Wave petunias that will spread out to 3 feet wide and a foot tall. The Wave petunias come in solid shades of white, pink and purple and you can mix and match to make stripes or drifts of color. Like all petunias the Wave petunias do best in full sun in soil that drains well but can be kept moist during the dry months of August and September. You don’t need to deadhead or prune back these spreading petunias but you do need to give them room to grow.

et thee to a nursery this second week of May because you now have the green light to fill window boxes, plant up porch pots and turn your patio into a blooming wonderland of color. Celebrate our pollinators and wildlife at the Tukwila Backyard Wildlife Festival and celebrate moms by visiting Powellswood Pleasure Gardens in Federal Way; you’ll have plenty of inspiration to fill up a nursery cart with color that will last all summer long. Combining colors in a container garden is a lot like painting a picture and many of our most famous artists have been gardeners as well. I’ll be speaking this week about art and artists in the garden (check my website at w w w.binettigarden.com for details) but these three types of petunias will help you paint your own summer color with success. Superbells Calibrachoa hybrids – more compact for small spaces These bright bloomers look like mini petunias only they are much better behaved. In our climate the Superbells resist rain and wind damage and fill up a container with compact and tidy blooms in enticing bi-color combinations. Mix Superbells with spiky plants and
trailing plants or pot up a bunch together for a massive display. If you have a small space these make a big impression. Coralberr y Punch Calibrachoa This bi-color blooms orange with a dark eye and looks great in a terra cotta pot or next to a brick wall or walkway. You don’t need to remove the spent blossoms – just feed and water for repeating blooms. Plant with orange and lime green coleus and purple sweet potato vine for a trio with a tropical punch. Supertunia Petunia Hybrids – mid-size blooms and medium size plants Bicolor blooms make the Supertunia hybrids perfect for combining with foliage plants or using as specimens. The show stopper that started the sensation was a purple and lime green petunia called “Pretty Much Picasso� and this year you can find the Supertunia “Picasso in Pink� with the same lime green edging around the petals but with a bright pink center. Ann said when she learned of Katie’s diagnoses she was “shocked and devastated.” The moment was “surreal,” she said. Katie was 18 years old when she learned of his diagnoses. She said her first two thoughts were, “Am I going to die?” and “Am I going to lose my hair?” Katie’s treatments did not last as long as her mom’s but she did spend eight months doing chemotherapy. She said on top of the chemotherapy, she was also taking about 10 pills a day. Helping Katie get through her treatments was her sister, Megan. “She is my best friend and went through it ALL with me,” Katie wrote in an email. While a senior at Seattle Christian, she missed a lot of days but made it a goal to play for the basketball team for her final high school season. She hit her goal. Katie said she was there during the first practice and was “strong enough for our first team game.” During her time at Seattle Christian, according to the University of Washington’s women’s basketball website, she became the all-time leading scorer. At 6 feet, 3 inches, Katie averaged 15 points a game for the Warriors. She took her basketball skills to Seattle where she plays for the University of Washington Huskies. “I have always wanted to play for my hometown team,” she said.

2 events help replenish food bank shelves
In two separate events recently, employees, students and community members helped stock the shelves of the Maple Valley Food Bank. Members of Tahoma’s Public School Employees group volunteered during the annual “Stuff the Bus� even at QFC. They collected donations of 2,104 pounds of food and $1,070. In a separate event, Tahoma Middle School staff, students and families held a spring food drive, which brought in 1,923 pounds of food and necessities. Project Coordinator Angela Wilhelm wrote a letter of thanks to the school, noting that the total of recent collections from Tahoma School District altogether was 10,785 pounds. “The food you provided will soon be on our shelves and on its way out to the homes of local families in need,� Wilhelm wrote. “We so appreciate our Tahoma Schools!�
New THS contractor boosts local workers The start of construction is less than a month away for the new Tahoma High School and regional learning center. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5. After that, earth moving begins, followed soon after by a parade of trucks delivering concrete, steel and other building materials. Much of the project has yet to go out to bid, so there are still opportunities for local companies to get involved. That was one of the messages at a meeting on the evening of May 6, when representatives of the project’s general contractor, Skanska USA, met with local businesses about how they can get involved. Skanska has held three public meetings to talk to local busi-
nesses about the project. More than 35 businesses attended the sessions. Skanska recognizes that the project’s immense size means smaller businesses might not have the resources to compete for work. The company offers guidance to small businesses about how to work with other subcontractors to determine if they can collaborate. Dan Curtiss, senior project manager for Skanska, told local business representatives at the May 6 meeting that Skanska has a program called Boost, which is designed to assist small businesses not only for the Tahoma project but anything Skanska builds. State testing seen as better way to track progress Students throughout Tahoma and Washington state are taking the Smarter Balanced tests this month. The S.B.A.C. (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) developed the tests to align with Common Core. “The state assessments will help us calibrate our expectations and level of achievement for our students,â€? said Dawn Wakeley, director of Teaching and Learning for the district. “The new state scores will begin to allow parents and teachers to measure year-overyear growth for our students. This helps us better understand if they are on track to meet the college and career ready expectation by the time they graduate from high school.â€? The transition to Smarter Balanced testing began last year, when Tahoma helped pilot WKH DVVHVVPHQWV LQ ³¿HOG WHVWLQJ ´ 6WXGHQWV and teachers are adjusting, although there is VLJQLÂżFDQW VWUHVV DVVRFLDWHG ZLWK WKH FKDQJH District staff used the experience gained LQ ÂżHOG WHVWLQJ WR GLVFRYHU ZKHUH LPSURYH-

That preparation includes a switch from paper tests to online testing, which requires that there are enough computers and bandwidth to accommodate students taking the assessments. “It’s all new and we have to ensure we have good support for them,� Wakeley said. Wakeley recalls the beginning of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning in 2001, which represented the beginning of tests tied to higher academic standards. The WASL was phased in over four years, while the SBA is being done in one year. Despite the challenge of making the change in a shorter time period, Wakeley said students are responding well. “We’re seeing kids rise in amazing ways to the challenge,� she said. “But not all of our kids are there yet.� Wakeley said students and parents can expect to see assessment scores go down and
then begin to climb during the next few years as instruction shifts to meet higher expectations of Common Core Standards. During that transition, Wakeley said teachers and support staff will provide added support to students. “Every single person in our system wants our students to do well,â€? she said. Contrary to what many people think, Common Core is not a curriculum; rather it is a set of standards that came from a bipartisan coalition of governors and state education chiefs who wanted to update their benchmarks of student success. Their idea was to enable American students to compete with other countries, allow states to be compared fairly across the board and save money by writing standards together. The discussions began when President George W. Bush ZDV VWLOO LQ RIÂżFH DQG WKH VWDQGDUGV ZHUH completed after President Barack Obama’s election.
