Effort will get local produce on more plates Survey says

Vashon-grown fruits and vegetables will be available to more islanders this year, thanks to a program intended to put local produce on the tables of those who might otherwise not be able to afford it. Beginning next month, the Vashon Island Growers Association (VIGA) will expand its Food Access Partnership and provide vouchers to island nonprofits so staff members may shop for free at the Farmers Market and farm stands or pass the coupons on to their clients to do so. “I believe that good food is a right,” said Merrilee Runyan, one of the organizers of the initiative. “We have all this wonderful food on Vashon. We want to spread it around.” While the Food Access Partnership has existed for several years and stretches the purchasing power at the market for people who receive assistance through federal food programs, this year it is embarking on a more ambitious effort, and hopes to provide $6,000 worth of coupons that nonprofits and their constituents can redeem for island-grown food. Teen drinking and drug use on Vashon — once far above state averages — have declined, according to the latest Healthy Youth Survey. Results from the survey — administered last year at middle and high schools across the state — show that eighth- and 10th-grade drinking, binge drinking, marijuana use and use of other drugs have all dropped steadily on Vashon since the survey was first given in 2006. Statewide results have shown similar though not as steep decreases in teen substance use. For instance, in 2006, 34 percent of Vashon’s eighth and 10th graders — a group government agencies look at when considering grants — reported drinking in the last 30 days, compared with 24 percent statewide. By 2010, that number had dropped to 22 percent on Vashon, and last year, just 11 percent of Vashon’s SEE SURVEY, 14

It probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that when Sarah Day, nurse for the Vashon schools, began to plan the district’s recent Head Lice Expo, she asked Lance Morgan to appear in costume as a giant louse. As the longtime office secretary of Chautauqua Elementary, Morgan has become known for doing things that stretch his job description, including creating a paper clip museum housed in a school hallway, writing Chautauqua’s endlessly looping school song and
amassing a quirky body of work as the school’s videographer. At Chautauqua functions, he has dressed up, variously, as an orca, a cowboy and Waldo of “Where’s Waldo” fame. For his appearance at the Lice Expo, held last week in the Chautauqua lunchroom, Morgan donned a costume stitched by Day from a set of beige curtains she found at a Value Village store. As worn by Morgan over a pair of khaki pants, the costume looked somewhat like a cute and cozy, though ill-conceived, sleeping bag. SEE LICE, 19

Vashon Island High School has again received a Washington Achievement Award and has been recognized as one of the top 5 percent of schools in the state for 2014. The school received the award, which is given by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the State Board of Education, last year as well. The award is based on state test scores, and schools that earned awards were recognized for high performance in one or more of six categories. VHS was again awarded for Overall Excellence, an award reserved for the top 5 percent of schools in the state that have overall high test scores as well as a narrow gap between the scores of low-income students and non-low-income students. VHS was also recognized for High Progress, meaning low-income students’ test scores showed improvement over a three-year period. Students considered low-income are those enrolled in the state’s free and reduced lunch program. New this year, VHS was also recognized for having a high graduation rate. That

category takes into account students who take five or six years to get their diploma. “When we are able to help the fifth- and sixth-year seniors get over the finish line, it really puts us there,� said VHS Principal Danny Rock. Rock said he and other school staff were pleased to get the award a second time. VHS was one of about 400 elementary, middle and high schools statewide to earn Washington Achievement Awards this year. The award was first handed out in 2008, when OSPI and the State Board of Education created the Washington Achievement Index, a school rating system that gives more weight to the performance of low-income students. “We appreciate the award, but it’s not the goal,� said Rock, who called the recognition a “whole-staff effort.� This is Rock’s second year at the high school. “It’s the first year where it reflects time I shared with the community,� he said, “so that is encouraging to be able to tell the team that we did it together.� Rock added that while the school clearly has many high-achieving students, it could do more to meet the needs of high schoolers who struggle in a traditional classroom setting. He and other staff are currently working to develop new alternative programs at VHS.

Bishop Greg Rickel, head of the Episcopal Church in Western Washington, will preach and lead worship at Vashon’s Church of the Holy Spirit on Sunday. The bishop visits most parishes once every three years, and Rev. Carla Pryne called his visit a special occasion. The church will have just one service that day, at 10:15 a.m. The usual 8 a.m. service is cancelled for May 3 only. Rickel was elected bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia in 2007. He previously served as a priest in Texas and Arkansas. As Bishop in Western Washington, he has articulated a vision with three main mission foci: stewardship of all creation, concentration on those 35 years of age and under and congregational development. “When it comes to church, Greg isn’t interested in business as usual. He’s got imagination, courage and edge. ... I’m grateful to be serving on his watch,” Pryne said.

Voice of Vashon has started a membership program, looking for a steady source of funding to sustain its many media platforms. The new membership program asks islanders to donate regularly to help provide year-round cash flow for the nonprofit. Voice of Vashon (VoV) operates an FM radio station that also streams online, an emergency alert service, a TV station, a comprehensive website and a smartphone app. Last year, the nonprofit organization raised about $50,000 to start up its FM station, KVSH. “Building it was one expense. That was not cheap. Now we have to keep it going,” said Station Manager Susan McCabe. The organization runs primarily on volunteer power — an estimated 7,000 hours contributed every year — plus an annual cash budget of about $76,000 to cover all of its operations. McCabe said that amount is less than one 10th of the budget of the standalone public radio stations in the Seattle area. Several local businesses serve as VoV underwriters, and the organization gets some private donations as well.

600 yards later, state will give update on effort to address Asarco pollution By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer
After sampling dirt from more than 600 island properties, state officials will visit Vashon next Wednesday to update the public on their project to test and clean yards contaminated by the historic Asarco smelter plume. Since the state Department of Ecology (DOE) began the massive cleanup project a few years ago, it has sampled soil from 615 Vashon properties for arsenic and lead contamination. It mapped out a service area on the southern ends of Vashon and Maury islands where contamination is the worst and where it will offer to replace yards with the highest levels or arsenic and lead. Of the 410 properties sampled in the service area, 39, or about 10 percent, meet the criteria for cleanup, according to Amy Hargrove, a coordinator with DOE’s Yard Cleanup Program. Another 5 properties sampled in the effort to set service area boundaries also qualify for cleanup. The state began the cleanups last fall, when contractors gave six locations about a foot of new topsoil. It plans to clean 16 more this year, and will clean any remaining yards in 2016. At the upcoming meeting, Hargrove said state officials will explain how they recently expanded the service area to include more properties on Maury and will soon reach out to those homeowners to offer sampling. “We wanted to make sure we offered
people more sampling in that area, just to make sure we found everyone who would qualify,� she said. The state will also give information on a new program for homeowners who have dirt with lower levels of arsenic and lead contamination. DOE has long publicized its recommendations for living with contaminated soil, such as removing shoes inside and washing hands after working in the dirt. Now, Hargrove said Yard Cleanup Program staff will also speak with individual homeowners to help them craft a plan that will work best for their households. “We’ll talk with them about ways they can reduce exposure and find out what actions they will actually take, rather than giving them a list,� said Jill Jacobson Reitz, the Yard Cleanup Outreach Coordinator. Hargrove noted that the state hasn’t heard from about 200 homeowners it offered soil testing. Properties in the service area can still be tested this year. State funding for the effort on Vashon and in Tacoma comes from a settlement Asarco, the Ruston-based copper smelter, made when it filed for bankruptcy in 2005. The state received $188 million in settlement funds and expects to spend about $64 million on the yard cleanup program. The meeting will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at McMurray Middle School. An open house session will be from 6:30 to 7 p.m., and a presentation will begin at 7 p.m., followed by a question and answer session. Special for April 29th May 2nd

Schools foundation supports a robust Strong candidates needed education for all Vashon students EDUCATION to revamp the park board EDITORIAL
By the time this paper comes out, we’ll likely know whether the Vashon Park District’s levy was renewed by voters. Either way, the district will only get back on the right path if it has a strong and cohesive board governing it, which it doesn’t right now. As individuals, commissioners are well intentioned, but at a recent meeting, they couldn’t even agree on a simple update to one of the district’s internal documents. It’s clear the park district needs new leadership to take charge and work to restore this once robust agency. There’s now a chance for significant changes on the park board. This fall, three of the five seats on the board will be up for election — the deadline for candidates to file is May 15. Now is when sharp, civic-minded islanders need to step up and breathe new life into this agency. And commissioners need more than financial acumen. They should have strong convictions about the park district’s role on the island, bringing with them relevant experience and an ability to provide the careful oversight this agency needs. They should act professionally and represent the interests of all park users — not just one group — as well as Vashon taxpayers. They should be good communicators, able to treat others respectfully and work toward consensus. It would also be encouraging to see some younger faces, more women on the board and broad interests represented. Strong candidates might be afraid to throw their hats in the ring, worried the experience of joining the park board may prove more unpleasant than its worth. However, we can’t let this cycle continue. Islanders who care about the park district’s mission should consider this an opportunity to be part of the solution and to contribute to the community in a very tangible way. Much is on the line — local parks, beaches and programs that help make Vashon a great place to live. Wouldn’t it would be wonderful if come this fall Vashon voters had several good options for new park commissioners. It’s the time of year when the Vashon Schools Foundation has its annual pledge drive. It’s one of many worthy causes raising funds in the community this month. Also, as a parent of two Chautauqua students, I’m well aware that spring brings sports fees, gear purchases and summer camp registrations as everyone gets ready for end of school and warmer weather. With so many demands on family finances, it’s a challenge to contemplate one more expense — especially when the state of Washington is supposed to be funding public education, not parents. So why, then, do I donate to the Vashon Schools Foundation every year? Why do I encourage others to do the same? Simply put, I want to keep and enhance the quality of education available here for all island students, including my own. I am a 1984 graduate of Vashon public schools. I know that I benefited from the devoted staff, small class sizes, challenging curriculum and virtually unmatched array of enrichment opportunities that existed then and persist today. There are precious few school districts in the state that enjoy this kind of continuity or consistency. Just ask the dozens of mainland families who enroll their children in Vashon public schools each year. Like these families, I recognize that island schools are not merely functional, they are extraordinary. If my son needs extra help in math, there’s academic help available. If my daughter is having a problem with a friend, there’s a counselor on staff ready to assist as needed. There are advanced academic study programs. There’s bilingual preschool. There’s a self-directed

learning program for homeschool families. There’s summer school assistance available. The curriculum is continually being evaluated and enhanced. New textbooks and lab equipment are provided when the prior generation’s tools become outdated or break. Then there’s all the amazing art and music programs, science clubs and school-sponsored sports options, many of them mentored by professionals from the community, as well as school district staff. All these opportunities that are just presumed to be part of the Vashon school experience are considered luxuries in other districts. They are deemed non-essentials that have been either cut out or downsized in mainland schools, mostly due to lack of funding. I feel these programs are necessities, not luxuries. Like every parent, I want my kids to have the advantage of choices, tools and instruction to help them become well-educated and well-rounded individuals by graduation day. So I am more than happy to give a donation to the Vashon Schools Foundation to help keep all this going. We’ve set up our gift on the foundation’s web site as an auto pay monthly contribution that fits our budget, and we let it run. My husband and I feel good knowing we are participating. Our donation,

A last word about thriving. One of the most exciting district proposals for next year is the new mental health and suicide prevention initiative. The goal of this program is to provide on-campus resources for issue identification, early intervention, counseling and support services in grades K-12. Staff training and processes will be implemented in order to proactively address issues of diversity, conflict, depression and isolation, promoting good mental and emotional health for every student in the Vashon Island public school system. I want to support a school district that thinks this way. One that responds to community sorrow with a progressive plan to help achieve wellness while avoiding tragedy in the student population it serves. I hope you will want to support it as well.

provided funds, design effort and equipment. Granny’s Attic’s Tim Johnson, parent Jordon Petram, the fire department, numerous sweepers and others seemed to pop up at just the right moment with just the right support. The groundbreaking studies of the stream bugs in Shinglemill Creek instigated this better approach, spearheaded by Vashon Nature Center’s Bianca Perla and supported by multitudes of Vashon school students, teachers, bug experts and volunteers. This all culminated at junior crew’s first spring car wash in an inspiring community effort, with more people pitching in than I have space to name. Improvements made for the recent guide dog benefit car wash, based on storm water system mapping done by VHS students, support by Water District 19’s Armin Wahanik and key suggestions by King County Stormwater’s Lori Cronin, Jeanne Dorn and Cameron Chapman, made things remarkably easier this time by intercepting all runoff at a main storm basin for pumping to a soil filtering area. I’m sure the bugs and critters in Shinglemill Creek send a big thanks to all. — Frank Jackson

Islanders need to step up Win or lose on the levy, the deadline for folks who are willing to run for a seat on the Vashon Park District board of commissioners is May 15. Forms must be

filled out and submitted to King County by May 15, or we’ll have more of the same at VPD, and who wants that? Many years ago, VPD Commissioner Bill Ameling said that most people on the island don’t know and don’t care about what’s going on at the park district. He was right. Nobody was paying attention. You want a better outcome? You better be willing to show up and work for it, one way or another. For many years, Captain Joe Wubbold was one of the very few members of the community to regularly attend VPD meetings. He witnessed the whole financial/VES Fields storm as it developed and then almost broke the district. Over the past few years I’ve observed the hostility and rudeness that some commissioners have directed at Captain Joe and other members of the public who have steadfastly shown up at the meetings and tried gamely to understand and help solve the problems that the district faced. The resentment and anger that has often been shown towards citizens who raise questions is palpable, and the fact that the other commissioners allow it to go on without comment has been disheartening, to say the least. We have an opportunity to change how business is conducted at the VPD. This November, there will be three seats up for election, but without strong candidates to run for these seats, there is no possibility of changing the disturbing culture that has developed over the years on the VPD board of commissioners.

The preservation report planned for this morning (May 29) at Raab’s Lagoon was canceled after several officials were unable to attend. However, islanders can still attend the Vashon Maury Island Land Trust’s annual meeting to learn about what the land trust has been up to in the past year and how it recently partnered with King County to purchase additions to several island parks and preserves using the $4 million in state funding that Sen. Naming Namers (part 2 of 2) By Chris Austin Maury Islanders, the next time you have a twenty-dollar bill in your hand notice the guy who went a little crazy with the styling mousse. That is President Jackson and he is the person ultimately responsible for naming your island. He authorized the United States Exploratory Expedition (dubbed U.S. Ex. Ex.), our country’s first government funded large scale scientific venture. When first suggested by President John Quincy Adams in 1828, using public funds for the advancement of science was a contentious issue. It took eight years of wrangling to finally clear the way for President Jackson to approve the project in 1836 (clearly NASA was not the first exploratory program to live or die by Congressional purse strings). Perhaps it was the auspicious timing that helped fund the voyage because 1835 and 1836 were the only years our country was debt free. As with previous world tours by France, Great Britain and other countries, the U.S. Ex. Ex. had the lofty goal of sailing around the earth over a period of years and collecting, cataloging and documenting everything in sight and all this information would be made available to the world. While the treasures brought back would soon become the basis for the Smithsonian Institute’s collection, it would take another seventeen years to publish all the facts, figures, charts, maps and drawings. It has been said much of this time was spent waiting for the copier guy to show up. The voyage itself had a few hiccups before it ever set to sea. First of all they had trouble finding anybody who wanted to lead it. Because it was a scientific rather than military command it wasn’t considered a plum assignment. After four others passed on the job it was offered to Lieutenant Charles Wilkes. Wilkes was born in 1798 and, after the untimely death of his mother, he was raised by various relatives including his aunt Elizabeth Seton, as in Seton Hall University. Elizabeth would go on to become the first American saint when she was canonized by the Pope. My guess is when a relative is an actual saint and has a university with a decent basketball team named after them, it raises the bar for the rest of the family and Wilkes was nothing if not driven. While he may not have been a religious icon he did expect his men to obey him like the word of God. In fact, there is some evidence to suggest that Herman Melville used Wilkes as a template for Captain Ahab in the classic Moby Dick. Maury Island’s namesake, William Maury, felt the ire of Wilkes when his punishment for a transgression was to be left alone on an island with the singular task of measuring the tide every hour, twenty-four hours a day for ten days. While this may seem cruel by today’s standards, it still isn’t as bad as sitting through a timeshare sales pitch. Given Wilkes’ temperament he must have been really cheesed-off when he entered Puget Sound in 1841 and found the big stuff already named. Yet he made up for the size of the features he named with the number, some 250 features in all. He apparently loved naming points of land. Just on our islands we have Robinson, Piner, Dalco, Neill, Sandford, Heyer and Henderson, plus others. Wilkes must have overcome his misgiving concerning Maury, the ship’s astronomer, as he named an entire island after him. Maury would go on to spend twenty years in the US Navy but, like the British James Vashon before him, he would go to war against the United States. Born in Virginia, Maury felt his allegiance lay with his state and resigned his US Navy commission to serve in the navy of the Confederate States of America but it probably didn’t help that his own commanding officer marooned him on a Pacific island! Ensemble will play music of 1600s and beyond The Salish Sea Early Music Festival will return to Vashon with the spring concert “1600: Winds of Renaissance, “ at 7 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Church. The program will include the diverse musical atmospheres of Italy in 1600, France and Europe in 1750 and Germany and Austria in 1820. The musicians will play the concert using period instruments. Anna Marsh will play dulcian, with Jeffrey Cohan on the renaissance transverse flute and John Lenti playing the Renaissance lute. Artists will open their doors for studio tour The first two weekends in May kick off the Spring Art Studio Tour, when over 30 island artists will open their studio doors in 21 different locations. The tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, May 2 and 3 and 9 and 10.
Visitors can meet the artists, ask questions about their creative process, enjoy the variety of artistic mediums and purchase art directly from the artist. New on the tour will be a mother-son show with landscape fused glass pieces by Mary Jo Svensen and paintings of familiar
Vashon scenes by Michael Leavitt. Jewelry will be well represented with work by Michael Kenney, Zuzko Jewelry, Gordon Bell and Jo Hollingsworth, among others. Jiji Saunders will demonstrate the 2,000-year-old wax encaustic painting technique at her studio, and Heron’s Nest will display

Hot new show burns brightly Burlesco Notturno returns to the Open Space for Arts & Community with a new show descriptor — HOT — and four of the region’s most popular burlesque performers, hand-picked by Madame X, at 8 p.m. Saturday. Doors open at 7 p.m. Madame X and her minion attorney, the alter egos of Open Space founders Janet McAlpin and David Godsey, typically host Burlesco with dramatic flair. Photos reveal world through teen eyes Camera shutters were snapping last month when island teens studying photography at Harbor School and McMurray Middle School stopped to capture the world as they saw it. The images will on display this month at Two Wall Gallery, with an opening night reception on Friday. Two shows from 25 McMurray students include photo transfers into beeswax. The students worked with photographer Ray Pfortner, who was hired through the Vashon Artist in Schools program, and McMurray art teacher Katie Lewandowski. Pfortner teamed up with school counselor Carolyn Zike, Tracie Mach from the Vashon Alliance to Reduce Substancec Abuse and portrait photographer Trudy Montgomery to work with eighth-grade students from the Prevention Club. Students shot portraits of classmates, who showed what keeps them “above the influence.” The show is called “The Power of Photography to Shape Positive School Culture.” At Harbor School, Pfortner collaborated with island photographer Chris Beck and
art teacher Alisara Martin during the school’s Voyager Week at Fort Worden in Port Townsend. “I will use what I learned as a jumping off point ... of how I want my shot to look,” said eighth grader Rhiannon Simmonds. “Everywhere I look (now) I see a photograph. It’s almost like having a rectangle in your vision.” For sixth-grader Finn McClure, the mechanics of photography caught his attention. “I used to think a camera was just ‘point and shoot,’ but there are a lot of mechanics to consider to put together a good photo,” he said. Paolo Peani, an eighth-grade student, had never used a DSLR camera. “I really enjoyed taking macro photos of flowers and fiddling around ... to get the perfect sunrise pic. I’m excited (about the show) and hope (the photographs) will be of interest to fellow photographers and viewers alike.” — Juli Goetz Morser

eighth and 10th graders reported drinking in the last 30 days, compared with 14 percent statewide. Similarly, in 2006, 28 percent of eighth and 10th graders on Vashon reported using marijuana in the last 30 days, compared with 13 percent statewide. Last year, just 8 percent of Vashon students reported using marijuana, compared with 13 percent statewide. While the small numbers of students surveyed mean the statistics could be off by a few percentage points, those examining the results say it’s encouraging that Vashon’s numbers are now more in line with state averages. They also call the downward trend evidence that school and community efforts to prevent teen drug and alcohol use are working. “The big trends are looking good. ‌ We’re close to the state in almost everything,â€? said Jim Hauser, a member of the Vashon Alliance to Reduce Substance Use (VARSA). In 2009, the group that would become VARSA partnered with Vashon Youth & Family Services (VYFS) to garner a large federal grant to try to address Vashon’s high levels of teen drinking and drug use. In 2012, VARSA captured an additional grant, and at one point the community coalition had around $500,000 per year to spend on programming and island-wide initiatives to steer youth away from drugs and alcohol. While VARSA and VYFS became mired in dispute over how the funding was spent, those involved say much has also been accomplished in recent years. The funding
has allowed VYFS and the schools to offer more parent education, parent counseling and services for families with at-risk children. Efforts in the community have included giving local businesses electronic ID readers, opening up or lighting places known to draw illegal activity and putting on highly publicized events, from prescription drug take-backs to road cleanups. At Vashon High School, policies around drugs and alcohol have tightened. And VARSA helped those designing the new high school building incorporate principles meant to provide fewer places for people to hide. VARSA volunteers have also worked to provide alternative activities for teens. The school district has partnered with VARSA for some of its programs and now works more closely than ever with the group as the fiscal sponsor for its grant. “I don’t know what’s correlative, let alone causative in that,� said VHS Principal Danny Rock, “but I have to believe if you’re trying to tackle this big of an issue, that every little individual effort is contributing to the larger push.� Hauser agreed. “I think it’s easy to get tied up in the minutia, but when you look at the bigger trends, I think it’s working,� he said. The Healthy Youth Survey is a lengthy questionnaire administered every two years that gives a snapshot into the lives of Vashon’s teens. While the survey was previously given only to sixth, eighth, 10th and 12th graders, this year all grades at VHS were surveyed. It was also the first year results compared Vashon’s data with the averages from only small school districts in Washington. Lisa Bruce, VARSA’s paid coordinator, said the small school averages were very similar to the statewide averages.

Rock noted that while Vashon’s use is now more in line with state averages, the survey found that both drinking and marijuana use spiked between the 10th and 11th grades. For instance, just 16 percent of Vashon’s 10th graders reported drinking in the last 30 days, but 34 percent of 11th graders and 41 percent of 12th graders reported drinking. Similarly, 30-day marijuana use rose from 12 percent in 10th grade to 20 percent in 11th grade and 26 percent in 12th grade, numbers that are close to state averages. Rock said that with that information, the high school hopes to now focus more on reaching ninth and 10th graders before they start drinking or using drugs. They’re off to a good start, he noted, by moving health class from 10th grade to ninth grade. “While we’ll continue to be holding students accountable if they choose to be high or bring drugs to campus or be under the influence at events, the focus will not be on them but on everyone else who’s not choosing to use. ... I definitely have a renewed interest in focusing on a prevention program to empower kids who are not using to continue to not use,� he said. Bruce agreed that VARSA and the school district’s work is far from over, noting that survey results also show Vashon teens perceive less risk around drinking and drug use than they once did. Among other things, this year VARSA is looking at where teens access alcohol. According to the Healthy Youth Survey, around 46 percent of students reported they got alcohol from a friend and 45 percent got it at a party. Eighteen percent said they took alcohol from home and 24 percent had their parents’ permission to drink at home. VARSA will continue its efforts to educate parents, Bruce said, and will host a
presentation next month by Stuart Gitlow, president of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He’ll speak about how substance use can harm a developing brain. “It’s not just that they’ll become addicted, but the use harms them,� Bruce said. VARSA is also making plans to go beyond the Healthy Youth Survey by having informal discussions with teens about the local party scene and what activities are popular for youth, since many indicated they got alcohol through friends or at parties. “We’re not cops. We’re just interested in knowing,� Bruce said. “What do you do, and what do the kids who aren’t in the party scene do? And how can we help make events that people want to go to? How can we expand on that?� VARSA also recently garnered county grants to partner with the schools on programs around mental health and suicide, issues Bruce said often go hand-in-hand with substance abuse. The Vashon Schools Foundation is also raising money for a broader effort around mental health education and suicide prevention. Healthy Youth Survey data shows that reported depression levels have remained steady among Vashon teens, with a small spike in 2010. Last year, 22 percent of students in eighth and 10th grade reported feeling depressed in the prior 12 months, compared to 31 percent statewide. Five percent of Vashon’s eighth and 10th graders said they had attempted suicide in the last year, compared with 10 percent statewide. Bruce said that while Vashon’s numbers might look low compared to the state, smaller numbers are less reliable, and mental health is an issue for youth everywhere. “We’re glad the school district has decided to do something focused around this,� Hauser said.

The Vashon Pirate baseball team has compiled an impressive 9-2 record so far this season, but its toughest test will come in the next two weeks. The Nisqually League title is still up for grabs with the top three teams playing each other multiple times before May 5. Vashon will face Seattle Christian twice more and will play Cascade Christian three times before the playoff run begins on May 9. The Pirates beat Overlake High School, 8-3, in a chilly game at Marymoor Park in Redmond on April 21. Logan Hawkins got the start from the mound, and junior Sam Yates made his varsity pitching debut, giving two strong innings before turning it over to sophomore Ashton Dulfer, who picked up the win. Offensively, the Pirates were led by freshman Levi Myer, who hit a single, double and his first home run — a solo shot to deep center field. Clyde Pruett, Hawkins and Josh Hruska Myer each contributed two RBIs. Sharp defensive play by catcher Chester Pruett ended the game on a quick tackle and throw ’em out double play. The game against Seattle Christian on Wednesday, April 23, was called in the third inning on account of the deluge. That game will be rescheduled for a later date. At the time of the drowning, Josh Myer was on the mound, and the Pirates were trailing 1-0. Saturday, April 25, found the Pirates at home on a beautiful morning with a huge crowd for the game against The Bush School. He faced four batters, had two strikeouts and threw out the third. Clyde Pruett created a bit of a mess from the bump, but Levi Myer quickly sorted that out, and the Pirates rolled to a 14-4 victory. Hawkins was the dominant bat on the day with four hits and four RBIs. Sam Schoenberg had three hits and two RBIs and Clyde Pruett had two RBIs. Junior Aeryn Johns saw action in left field and contributed a hit, as did freshman Wyatt Yates, who caught the final innings. Head coach Steve Hall is readying his team for a big push for good position going into the playoffs. “We’ve had a fun couple of nonleague games this week. The win over Overlake, who really took it to us last year, was nice. The guys really came out with a workman-like attitude
and controlled the game from the start. The team was thrilled for Levi’s bomb over the center field fence. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a freshman hit a ball that far.” He added that Saturday was also opening day of Vashon Youth Baseball & Softball and provided an opportunity to get everyone playing time. “Now the fun really starts as every game the rest of the way will be a fight for playoff seeding,” he added. The Pirates played Seattle Christian on Monday, April 27, after press time. On Wednesday, the Pirates will face Cascade Christian for the first time this season at the home field at 4 p.m. On Friday they will travel to Cascade Christian, and there is a possible makeup game set for Saturday, May 2. — Cheryl Pruett is the mother of two Pirate baseball players.

Last week, Vashon boys’ soccer team played two league home games that were must win in order to keep any hopes of a post-season alive. With a standing of zero wins and three losses against various league rivals, the Pirates were looking desperate for some league wins. The first game of the week came against Cascade Christian, which turned the tide for Vashon. The Pirates found their first league win with a decisive 4-2 victory over the Cougars. Scoring opened up with a cross through the penalty box that Gabe Reoux connected with into the back of the net. Ten minutes later and with a touch of his own skill, he got his second goal just before the half. Sensing how vulnerable the Cougar defense was, the Pirates proceeded with their onslaught in the second half. Bohdin Mozeleski scored on an Anthony Gateman cross, and Gabe Reoux scored another goal after the hard work and skill of Gerardo Pereyda helped Vashon seal a huge lead. The Pirates were on a clear roll to victory, and this is where they showed their own vulnerability. In the last 15 minutes, the Pirate defense clearly let their guard down. Cascade Christian scored twice before the final whistle. There was never a fear of the Cougars climbing back into the game, but it became apparent that one of Vashon’s biggest weaknesses could be playing down to the level of teams that they should be finishing off. On Friday night, the game against league rival Seattle Christian was a rematch of an earlier season game that Vashon lost. The Pirates were looking for redemption after a game that they only themselves to blame for losing. So at the last home game of the season and Senior Night, the players from both teams were called to roll, and the game was underway. Again, both teams dominated both ends of the field. Passing and control was better from the Pirates, as possession was mostly theirs to enjoy. On a sloppy clearing from the Vashon defense, with the sun in goalie Ben Stemer’s eyes, the ball dropped to a Seattle Christian player, and he blasted it into the back of the net. Seattle Christian was up 1-0 at halftime. Vashon senior players were getting set to play their last half of a game for Vashon High School forever. With the start of the second half, it was obvious that

Junior crew continues strong spring season

Vashon players were not going to roll over. Playing hard and pressing again and again, Gabe Reoux got his foot on the end of a cross from Austyn Heit to tie the game up. Frustrated, the Seattle Christian goalie made an attempt on a save that missed the ball and took out a Vashon player to set up a penalty kick. The first Pirate penalty kick of the season was buried in the back of the net by Heit, saving the game in a 2-1 victory and saving Senior Night in front of a large home crowd that loves a great game of soccer. With these two league wins, the question is how are Vashon’s hopes for post-
season now. These wins put the Pirates in third place in the league. Next come the last three games of the regular season against tough league opponents. All games are away with Charles Wright Academy first, followed by Bellevue Christian and finishing against Cascade Christian. The top three teams in the league will move on to the district tournament. Brentwood College School located on Mill Bay north of Victoria, British Columbia, put on its 45th annual juniors’ regatta this past weekend with more than 1,700 rowers participating from 34 clubs in western Canada and the Northwest United States. The competition was spirited, and the growing camaraderie of rival crews who have been racing each other in various regattas this spring and who shared the campus grounds with each other for three days was evident in high fives and group conversations. The beautiful setting was enhanced even further on Friday afternoon as sunny periods chased by rain showers draped intense rainbows across the east-facing venue. Races are comprised of heats (top two or three move on) and finals plus combinations of experience (novice, junior varsity and varsity), weight (lightweight and open) and age categories (A, any age; B, 16 and under). A total of 167 events were held on the 1,500-meter course from Friday afternoon through Sunday morning. Once again Vashon’s crews turned in a solid performance, coming in

10th in overall score and tied for third when results were normalized to the number of events entered. Friday turned out to be a banner day when 10 of 13 boats made it out of the heat round and into Saturday’s finals, where the team collected four silver and five bronze finishes. Vashon crews that took second place in Saturday finals were the men’s novice and JV A quads and novice B quad and the women’s novice B quad. Third-place finishers were the women’s varsity B eight, the varsity A and B quads, the JV B quad and the men’s varsity A quad. On Saturday afternoon, five more boats advanced to Sunday finals, where the lightweight varsity four with Virginia Miller, Maddie McEachern, Shannon Lipe, Emily Milbrath and coxswain Ally Clevenger led from start to finish to take home Vashon’s sole gold medal of the weekend and kept alive a multi-year winning streak for varsity boats at this prestigious regatta. Sunday’s racing also brought a silver medal for the women’s B varsity double and bronze medals for the women’s B varsity quad and A varsity double. Overall for the weekend, Vashon
rowers advanced 15 boats out of 25 heats with one boat going directly to a final. Medals are not easy to come by at Brentwood, and the weekend total of 13 eclipsed last year’s record of 12. Of 37 Vashon participants, 33 returned home with a medal. Both Katrina Heffernan and Tabitha Illerbrunn topped the individual medal tally with four each. The event was an unusual one for Coach Richard Parr, who was not able to make the trip and had to watch the racing from Vashon. With mobile phones slightly warm to the touch all weekend, the distance didn’t impede communications with assistant coach Tom Kicinski, who handled on-site preparation of the crews. “This regatta was a testimony to the depth we are building in our junior program. The only teams that scored higher in this regatta have more than three times the number of rowers in their programs, ” Parr said. Two junior men’s and women’s quads and a mixed masters’ eight will race Saturday, May 2, in the Opening Day regatta at the University of Washington. — Pat Call is the father of a junior rower.

Vultures rank second in league The Vashon Vultures lacrosse team is sitting in second place behind Klahowya, sporting a 4-2 league record and having scored 88 goals to Klahowya’s 118, though Klahowya has played one more game than Vashon. The team is led with senior strength from Ezra Ende and Chance and Winter Krimmert. Freshman Duncan McMillan is doing a fine job at goalie, saving more than 50 percent of the shots taken. After a long break to accommodate spring breaks, the Vultures played Port Angeles on Saturday and defeated them soundly, 16-1. In that game, McMillian saved nearly 88 percent of the shots on goal. In its league, Vashon has the second-, third- and sixth-ranked goal scorers in Winter Krimmert, Ende and freshman Max Schira. The seventh-eighth grade team is having a good year as well, with a large crop of eighth graders. With long, quilted skirting attached to a long-sleeved tunic, it was topped by a hood featuring soft, floppy antennae. “It’s really comfortable and warm, but the only problem is that I can’t use my fingers,” Morgan said, as he extended the costume’s clawed mittens toward a group of curious kids who had gathered around him. “These are for grabbing onto your hair,” he said. Morgan couldn’t answer many questions about the life cycle of a louse — “I can’t explain it, I just am what I am,” he answered, in character, to one visitor’s queries — but luckily, others at the Expo were armed with facts about the hard-to-get-rid-of but harmless parasitic insects that seem to be increasingly seeking safe haven on the hair shafts of Vashon schoolchildren. Organized by Day and a group of Chautauqua parents who call themselves the Lice Squad, the Expo was intended to be a light-hearted and community-minded way to tackle the lice issue head on, so to speak. “It’s not that this is a problem on Vashon,” Day said. “It’s a problem everywhere.” All over the world, Day explained, lice have become increasingly resistant to over-the-counter chemical treatments such as RID and Nix, so parents need to take a more hands-on approach and inspect their children’s hair at least once a week. While the elementary school has seen lice outbreaks in the past, so far this year there have been an average of 5.6 cases reported per month. Day said those numbers are comparable to nationwide average for lice infestation. At the expo’s combing station, Day ran a lice comb through the hair of several young attendees, looking for the telltale signs of infestation — live bugs and their tiny, eggs, called nits, which are attached to the shafts of hair. Day was joined in her work by Larissa de Ruyter, who has

a local business called Nit Pickers — de Ruyter specializes in lice and nit removal as well as organic treatments for lice prevention. As they combed through and peered at the heads of children who lined up for inspection, the pair kept up a running commentary that was aimed at dispelling myths about the insects. “Lice don’t fly or jump, they only crawl,” Day said. “It’s really important to remember that this is not about having a clean house. Lice can’t live long on carpeting or couches, and their little claws have only evolved to hang onto a human hair. That’s the only place they want to be, where it’s warm and moist.” The expo also featured a science fair-like display where kids and parents could see lice specimens up close through three microscopes. Younger kids were also encouraged to color cartoonish pictures of the bugs in a handout called “The Latest Greatest Coloring Book About Lice.” For puzzle-minded kids, there were copies of a jumble that included a search for words including “infested,” “scalp,” “blood” and “crawl.” At a lunch table, members of the Lice Squad held court with helpful advice and explanations of why they decided to get involved in the cause of lice eradication on the island.
Patricia Dunn Hudson of Port Townsend, WA, died on April 21, 2015 at 87 years old. She passed peacefully at her daughter’s home, surrounded by her children, and fittingly drifted away listening to a Bach Prelude. Born August 22, 1927, in Oakland, CA, to Eda and Lemuel Dunn, Pat was the youngest of three siblings. She married Wayne Hudson in 1950 and was a loving mother to Kathleen, Susan and Curtis. Pat began conducting church choirs at 17 years old. She attended San Francisco State University, graduating with a music teaching credential in 1949. She spent over fifty years in choral music (off and on) serving as the Director of Music at the Congregational Church of San Mateo for 29 years. She was also on the faculty of the Crystal Springs School and worked with the AAUW Women’s Chorus. She conducted the Mills College Community Chorale before moving to the Northwest in 1988. After directing music at the Vashon Methodist Church, she became the conductor of the Vashon Island Chorale until her retirement in 1999. Somehow during all this, Pat found over twenty years to own and operate Potcarrier, a Southwest American Indian Art store in Burlingame, CA and Vashon Island, WA. After retirement she moved to Port Townsend, Washington. Surviving are her brother Tom Dunn of Oklahoma, her daughter Kathleen Hudson of Port Townsend, WA, her daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Del Moss of Nayarit, Mexico, and her son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Michelle Hudson of Eagle, Idaho. Also surviving are four grandchildren (Jami, Jared, Nicholas and Matthew) and one great grandchild (Riley Sue). Private family services have been held. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in her name to the charity of your choice.
Christy Veal, Lice Squad president, moved to Vashon in 2013 after spending a few years in The Netherlands — a country, she said, with a much better system for keeping lice in check. “In Amsterdam, a group of moms came into the school and checked every single head three times a year,” she said. “It wasn’t a big deal, but when we came back to the U.S. it was so different here. It was a big secret, and so dramatic.” The mission of the Lice Squad, Veal said, is to “educate, empower and remove the stigma” surrounding lice, as well as provide support and advice for parents dealing with the issue. The group has a hashtag — #licefreevashon — and also hopes to use social media to spread the word about how to prevent transmission of the bugs. More events — possibly including Lance Morgan, dressed up as a louse — might also be in the works, they said. That seemed to be fine with Morgan, who remained in costume and in character as the evening wore on. “We all have a purpose in life,” he said, as the louse, in a musing that was both philosophical and poignant. “I just mostly annoy people, but I don’t hurt anyone.” For more information on lice or the Lice Squad, contact Sarah Day at sday@vashonsd.org.

Senior center Director Ava Apple shopped frequently at the farmer’s market and farm stands for the agency’s lunches, which it provides four times a week for a small fee. Doing so enabled the cooks to offer fresh salads at each meal and feature other vegetables as well. “Locally sourced, organic produce is a total game changer. That is what everybody wants,” Apple said. “To be able to offer that was a coup.” While fresh vegetables pack a nutritious punch, they also provided food for thought, she added. “I would tell the seniors where the food came from, and that would sprout a conversation about memories, how they grew that food, or their parents did, or they remembered that farm from years ago,” Apple said. She readily used the $600 worth of coupons and would have used more had she
had them. “I could use double that,” she said. At VYFS, Deborah Rieschl said she gave some of the vouchers to clients of the VIVA program, which helps islanders meet their basic needs, and used some for agency events and groups that clients attended. In addition to enabling low-income islanders to stretch their limited funds, Rieschl said it was particularly helpful for families who might live in far-flung areas of the island to shop near them at a farmstand. Sometimes, Rieschl added, she shopped with clients using the vouchers, then cooked and ate with them at their homes. While she handed out all the vouchers, she said, clients did not use them all, a problem she intends to address this year. Instead of making the vouchers available only to VIVA clients, Rieschl said she would like the entire counseling staff to be able to pass them out when appropriate. “I am so hopeful that if all staff knows and gets the fervor going, they will actually be used,” Rieschl said. New to the program this year is La Comunidad Latina, a group that started a few years ago to help foster community with members of the island’s growing Hispanic population. Helen “Lennie” Louise (Leonard) Gifford Helen was born to George and Hannetta Leonard on July 10, 1925 in East Liverpool, Ohio and passed away on April 12, 2105 in Anacortes, WA. She lived in East Liverpool through grade school, attended high school in Chicago, Illinois, and went to college at the University of Colorado where she studied business. Her favorite extra-curricular activity was her active participation in the University of Colorado Hiking Club. She met the love of her life, Jack Gifford, at the University of Colorado and they were married in 1948 in Bond Chapel, University of Chicago campus. After college they moved to New Jersey where their two sons were born. Before their birth and after their sons were raised she held a variety of accounting and bookkeeping positions. In 1962 they moved to Vashon/Maury Island where they stayed for the rest of their lives. They often remarked to each other on how lucky they were to live on Vashon/Maury. Such an ideal location and so many wonderful friends. She was a dedicated and much loved Mother, volunteered for parent support activities in schools, supported many charitable, social, and religious organizations both in New Jersey and Vashon. She was especially fond of her P.E.O. chapter and her participation in Quartermaster Yacht Club of which she and Jack were life members. Helen and Jack together built their much loved sailboat “Sea Dreamer II” and had many happy cruises on it. Her dedication to and love of family was beautiful to see. She and Jack loved and enjoyed each other, family, friends, travel, sailing, their home of more than 50 years on Quartermaster Harbor, and life in general. Helen also enjoyed gardening, bridge, piano playing, genealogy, swimming, tole painting, calligraphy, and oil painting and created many beautiful pieces. She will be remembered by all as a loving, pleasant, beautiful and gentle person. Helen is survived by two sons and their wives, John and Janet of La Conner, Washington and Paul and Janette of Isle of Palms, South Carolina; grandsons Jarad, Kevan (and his wife Becky Jo), Brian, Kamron; granddaughter Stephanie; step-grandson Brian Kayler, and sisterin-laws Janet Leonard of Illinois and Jean Gifford of England. said she sometimes hears about families facing dire situations. “This will help me respond to that need,” she said. She will also be getting word out about the program in Spanish, she said, including the information about matching funds for those who participate in the food stamp and WIC programs. In fact, Runyan said, the voucher program VIGA is working to expand this year has its roots in that effort. In 2009, VIGA received a grant to purchase a wireless credit card machine that enabled the market to accept EBT cards (food stamps). It added its supplemental Market Bucks then, and each year since has matched the first $10 EBT customers spend each week with an additional $10 toward their purchase. Last year, it followed suit with the WIC program, which provides food assistance to low-income women and their children under 5. Those efforts have been funded by donations and grants, as is the voucher initiative. Last year it received money from a family foundation as well as a larger fundraising drive. This year, Granny’s Attic provided $800 for the program, and a Guest Bartender Night to help fund the cause is set for next week with the goal of raising $2,500. The Market Bucks and the coupons benefit not just those who use them for food, Runyan said, but local farmers also benefit, and, in turn, the wider community. Last year, thanks to Market Bucks and the vouchers, $2,665 went back into the local economy, she noted. “It is a beautiful circle,” she said. “It does bring more business to farmers.” Harmon Arroyo, the coordinator of the daily free community meals program is looking forward to being fully involved this year, though he stressed he is not sure yet just what that will mean. One option is that the vouchers could go to the volunteers
who provide the free meals and help to defray their costs. Details will be arranged soon, he said, and stressed his enthusiasm. “I think VIGA is doing a wonderful thing, and the implications will widen with time,” he said. “It’s a win, win, win, win no matter how you look at it.” Many communities try to make local agriculture accessible to low-income people, Runyan said, and many work with social service agencies, but Vashon is the only community she knows of that supplies vouchers for food. This summer, she said, she expects the island will benefit from a recently awarded federal grant meant to put fresh, local food within reach for many lowincome people. VIGA will likely use those funds to publicize its incentive programs, Runyan said, and use the funds it is raising to fund those programs. In the mean time, she said, her committee is working on getting the word out on what VIGA currently offers, has taken lessons from the pilot effort last year and will make adjustments as needed. “Being an island, we are small enough to that we can experiment and can see what will work,” she said. At DoVE, whose clients will also benefit from the produce vouchers this growing season, Executive Director Betsy Archambault said she, too, is pleased clients of her agency will be included. “We will not be stingy with them,” she said about the vouchers. “We want people to eat more fruits and vegetables. Besides, the farmers market has a lovely atmosphere. If people go there and get a little bit of extra happy on Saturday, that is good, too.” A Guest Bartender Night benefitting the Food Access Partnership will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at The Hardware Store Restaurant. Andrew Miller Andrew Miller died unexpectedly on April 21, 2015, at the age of 44. Andy is survived by his wife Shannon; sons David and Tommy; parents Lee and Joan; brother Scott, Rosemary, Peter and Robert and sister Linda Stone, Dan and Piper. Andy was born on March 29, 1971 in Bellevue, WA, to Lee and Joan Miller. He married Shannon in 1998 and the couple moved to San Francisco where David and Tommy were born. The family returned to Seattle in 2006 and Andy continued his technology career. Andy was an outdoorsman and loved everything about the mountains and being on the water. Always quick to help someone at a moment’s notice, his generosity captured the hearts of those around him. A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, April 30, at 5:00pm at St. Thomas Church in Medina, with a reception to follow at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue to celebrate Andy’s life. We’re looking for forever homes! Rogue came to VIPP in February of 2014 looking a little worse for the wear having lived his life as an outdoor cat. Over time, Rogue has become more self-assured and likes to see the volunteers when they come with his daily meals. Rogue is looking for a warm safe indoor home with peeps who can be patient with him as he becomes more comfortable around humans. Rogue came to VIPP on 2/15/14. Paulina is a very beautiful girl who was turned over to VIPP with her three kittens back in August. She nursed her kittens until they were old enough to find new homes and now she is spayed and ready to find a new home of her own. She has gone from being shy the point of hiding to coming out to greet volunteers and get pets when they come to her room. Paulina has suffered enough perils in her life and she looks forward to being adopted into a loving home. An indoor quiet home is best for her. Paulina came to VIPP on 8/20/14.
So there are smart dogs, and then there are really smart dogs‌and then there is Ginger. This lovely two-year old Border Collie mix is truly just an absolute gem of a dog who quickly wins the heart of anyone she meets with her goofy smile and invitation to play. Whip smart and oh so eager to please, she loves to be loved and after a lifetime of being abandoned, Ginger is aching for a forever home and someone to call her own. Ginger will need an active home that can give her plenty of exercise and continue with her training.And because she is just now learning how to interact with other furry and small creatures, being an only dog in a home with no kids is best so the spotlight can be on her!
