Coming together to fix a hole in a roof BY DENNIS BOX Editor

ake Sawyer Christian Church and Stevenson Roofing joined forces this week to fix a hole in a roof where the rain gets in. Brian Sytsma, a member of the Lake Sawyer Christian Church, said the James Brigade from the church and Stevenson Roofing found a way to replace a roof for a woman who recently lost her husband of 40 years. (She asked that her name not be used.) Sytsma wrote in an email the James Brigade is, “… named after the verse in James 1 that says that true religion is to look after orphans and widows in their distress…” He said the James Brigade goes to a widow or single mother’s home once a month to do handyman work or yard chores. His James Brigade team of three or four men helped the woman who lost her husband in October. She lives north of Ravensdale. “On many Saturdays over the winter months we would spend as much time just sitting and talking with her as working around the house,” Sytsma wrote. “In February, she told us that she was concerned about her roof, since there had been a few leaks. She showed us an estimate she had received from a roofing company. It was over $12,000, which would wipe out a chunk of her savings.” During a period of heavy rain in March Sytsma said her roof began leaking. “She called us, not knowing what to do,” Sytsma wrote. “We are not licensed or bonded, so we cannot take on major repairs. Maple Valley residents will see at least two new council members next year. Five of the seven council positions are expiring. Two of those members – Noel Gerken and Layne Barnes – announced earlier this month they would not be running for re-election. The remaining three council members whose terms also expire at the end of this year – Dana Parnello, Position 6, Linda Johnson, Position 7, and Sean Kelly, Position 1 – have announced they will run to keep their chairs on the dais come 2016.

COVINGTON Covington has four seats on its council expiring this year, Jeff Wagner, Position 7, Sean Smith, Position 5, Marlla Mhoon, Position 1, and Mayor Margaret Harto, Position 3.

Kent church helps single moms, widows change their oil BY SARAH WEHMANN Reporter

For the second year in a row, members of the Kent Seventh-day Adventist Church will help change oil for single moms and widows. Last fall, 11 women from the church received oil changes. “It was so well received and appreciated (last year), we are enlarging the offer,” Pastor Greg Schaller said. Schaller said during a home group meeting, church members decided to provide the oil changes as their practical service to others. “We picked single women and widows because sometimes changing the oil can be overlooked and we want to help,” he said. The oil changes are done by those church members who came up

with the idea to provide the services. And Schaller said this time, the church is partnering with the O’Reilly Auto Parts in Kent who will provide the oil and filters. The church will have enough oil and filters to help 30 women. The oil changes will take place at the church from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 26. Schaller said the oil changes are limited to single women and widows from the Kent-Covington area. To participate in the event Sunday, Schaller said people must call the church and make an appointment and provide what type of car to ensure the correct filter and oil is used. The Kent Seventh-day Adventist Church is located at 25213 116th Ave SE and their phone number is 253-852-3883.

Five of the six elected positions in Black Diamond are on the ballot this year. Those are Mayor Carol Benson, Tamie Deady, Position 1, Janie Edelman, Position 3, Craig Goodwin, Position 4, and Ron Taylor, Position 5. As of the press deadline, the Reporter hadn’t received any official word from either the Covington or Black Diamond elected officials regarding their decision to run for office.

MAPLE VALLEY Kelly, who was first elected to the council in 2011, wrote in a letter to the Reporter he wants to focus on traffic problems, among other things, within the city. He said within the next two decades, 6,000 homes will be built in Black Diamond. This, he wrote, will cause an influx of 10,000 [ more COUNCIL page 6 ]

con a year ago, I realized the only reason we got a hotel room was so the kids could go to the ball Friday night. But knowing my daughter won’t actually go anywhere where dancing might break out and never coming out financially even on the hotel room, I wondered why I was still going. I only agreed to Comicon last year if I could drop them off. With food and water packed into their backpacks it worked so well, I broke tradition this year and decided they could do it again not only for Comicon but for Sakura-con as well. I also decided I wasn’t going to drive them. They are 16 and 17 years old and could navigate public transportation making my life more convenient. My youngest daughter’s big conventions this year were within a week of each other. Comicon (dressing up – oops, excuse me, “cosplaying” like comic book characters) was the last weekend in March and Sakuracon (dres- uh, cosplaying like anime or Japanese cartoon characters) is always Easter weekend. For Sakura-con we made it a whole “thing.” I’d pack the snack trough, get a hotel room and spend the weekend in the lobby. When we got there in the morning, it took all day to get into the room, only to have to pack up the next morning and check out of the room. I don’t know about you, but driving to downtown Seattle with 100,000 or more additional people, is not my idea of a fun weekend. Although I always went to Sakura-con with my daughter and her friends, when Comicon was added to the list, I resisted. In the midst of Sakura-

The first day, one of the other moms drove them, hung out in Seattle all day and brought them home. I was not willing to do that. But there was a bus I had been enlightened to a few months before – bus No. 150. It picked them up at Kent Station, delivered them to Seattle, then dropped them off at Kent Station. Bus No. 150 became my new best friend, not only was it closer to my home than the light rail, it was easier to navigate. So Sunday morning of Comicon, I dropped my daughter and one of her friends off. My youngest texted me to let me know they had arrived. Getting home was probably more complicated as they had to figure out where to get the bus, but they were grown up enough to ask directions. I was stressed waiting for them and it reminded me

when my oldest daughter didn’t get off her bus on her first day of kindergarten. As the bus driver drove back to the bus garage, he pondered where she had gone (a whole other issue and a cause of mass hysteria) when he looked up to see her little hands on the back of a seat. She didn’t recognize the stop because it was different from where she was picked up. So you can imagine my relief when my daughter and her friend stepped off the bus; safe and sound; sold on taking bus No. 150. It turned out it was actually easier than the light rail (aside from the varied reactions to their costumes). My little cosplayers don’t need me like they used to – thanks to bus No. 150.

Fatal construction accident still under investigation BY RAY STILL

2014 FIRE FATALITY REPORT SUMMARY There were 45 fire related fatalities reported in 2014. Fire related fatalities were down for the third consecutive year (37 percent from 2011). Sixty percent of all fire related fatalities occurred in single family dwellings. Smoke detectors were not present in 33 percent of incidents. Nine percent of those killed by fire were under the age of 10. From the State Fire Marshal’s Office

It’s been described as the worst tragedy the city of Bonney Lake has ever seen. The untimely deaths of Josh, Vanessa, and eightmonth old Hudson Ellis early last week brought emotional turmoil to the Bonney Lake community and spurred city officials and company investigators to meticulously scrutinize what construction workers were doing on the morning of April 13 and why the barrier wall on the state Route 410 overpass fell onto Angeline Road. While the investigation is still on-going and information continues to surface, Bonney Lake officials have made it clear they believe the demolition of the SR 410 barrier wall was to occur at a later date and the bridge demolition plan may not have been followed by subcontractors working on the project. The various companies working on the SR 410 sidewalk project, including WHH Nisqually Federal

Services, Highmark Concrete Contractors, Staton Companies and American Concrete Cutters, remain tight-lipped. “Staton company wishes to extend it’s sincere and heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of the Ellises,” said Mark Scheer, attorney for Staton Company. While Scheer only represents Staton, his statement epitomizes other statements made by the rest of the companies involved in the SR 410 project. “This has been a very big tragedy for everyone involved,” Scheer said. “The company is cooperating with all aspects of the investigation and has no further comment at this time.”

WIDENING THE OVERPASS The SR 410 Sidewalk Project involved widening the 410 overpass above Angeline Road to install a sidewalk so pedestrians and bicyclists can cross the bridge safely. On Dec. 13, 2014, the city of Bonney Lake offi-

cially hired WHH Nisqually Federal Services to be the prime contractor of the project. On bid submission documents, WHH Nisqually listed Highmark Concrete Contractors and Transportation System Inc. as subcontractors for the project. Highmark hired Staton Companies to help with the partial bridge demolition, according to bridge demolition plan documents. Staton Companies hired American Concrete Cutting to also help with the partial bridge demolition. According to Bonney Lake spokesperson Woody Edvalson, the project cost about $1.8 million. Construction on the project has been temporarily halted to allow for further investigation and review of construction practices and procedures, according to a press release from Bonney Lake.

We are all aware of the dangers of driving while we’re distracted. So why do we continue to text, call and conduct personal hygiene while we’re behind the wheel of a deadly hunk of metal? Something happens in our brains that makes us pick up our device as soon as it chimes, indicating we’ve got a new message or someone has “liked” your selfie from earlier this morning. Is it the need for instant gratification that our technology-based society yearns for? I think it goes deeper than that. We all like being liked. It’s human nature. Technology has just hyperbolized this innate trait and has deepened our desire to be liked. I don’t think any of us post something on social media without some kind of expectation that we’ll get at least one “like” out of it. And as soon as that first notification comes through, we have to see right away. Well, unless your friend clicked “like” by mistake, that notification or text will still be there when you get off the road. I promise. The weather is nice, so go take a walk. What you’ll notice is pretty incredible, in a scary kind of way. As you stand on the corner of a busy intersection take note of how many drivers go by with their heads down and at least one of their hands holding their phone or a mascara comb. Take note of how long their eyes are off the road and how far they’ve traveled in that time. We know it happens all the time, but to actually see it and to see the damage it causes is something completely different. According to the Centers for Disease Control’s motor vehicle safety webpage, there are three types of distracted driving – visual, manual, and cognitive. Texting or handling any type of device while driving checks all of those boxes. We’re staring down at our phones, we have at least one of our hands off the wheel (sometimes two), and our

mind is focused on what we’re reading or thinking of a witty response, as opposed to the road. And this does not only apply to young drivers, adults do it too. In 2012, 3,328 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver. That’s almost 80 percent of the entire population of Black Diamond. More than 3,000 people gone because of our inability to remove ourselves from our virtual lives or put down the makeup brush for more than a few minutes. By the numbers, distracted driving is about a third less deadly than alcohol-impaired driving, according to the CDC. But, the fact that it’s less dangerous does not make it safe. So what can be done? We can increase fines for distracted driving or we can make more laws restricting mobile device use while driving, but those remedies address only the problem. They aren’t a real solution. We need to start detaching ourselves from our devices, physically and mentally. We also need to wake up 10 minutes earlier so we can put our makeup on in the safety of our bathrooms. Start at home, before you even place your fingertips on the door handle of your vehicle. Make a rule that all devices stay out of ear shot of the dinner table vicinity. Take a walk outside while

the nice weather lasts and leave your phone at home. You don’t need it anyway. Make a conscious effort to understand that what’s happening in cyberspace does not require your attention at this very moment. When you do expand this practice to the inside of your car, you can take extra steps to decrease your chances of picking up your phone. Physical limitations include putting your phone in the backseat of the car or even in the trunk if you have really long arms. You can also download an app that detects your speed and automatically puts your phone into drive mode, disabling your ability to use it. It also sends a text to people who message you that says something like, “Yo, I’m driving. I’ll get back atcha.” You can customize the message if that’s not your style. But, whatever you do, don’t think that you can simply ignore your phone. The last thing you want to do is start an internal battle between your will power and your desire to be liked while you’re behind the wheel. Checking your messages, seeing who has liked your valencia-filtered selfie, or putting on your face for the day are all things that are not worth someone’s life. You’re not invincible and neither is the person driving towards you in the other lane.

Support Prop 1 I am writing to urge you to support Proposition 1 to fund road and sidewalk improvements in the city of Covington. As a homeowner, I am never happy about tax increases except in the case where I know that the money is going for a cause or specific use that I am in favor of. In this case, the taxes raised from a 0.2 percent increase in the Covington sales tax would be restricted to road and sidewalk improvements. These are necessary and overdue improvements, just ask anyone who navigates through Covington from

east to west, or north to south. Covington is largely a hub for southeast King County residents of nearby towns and unincorporated areas of King County. Rather than burden only the citizens of Covington, this is a very fair way to leverage the sales tax revenues to finance the street improvements. With growth in the nearby communities continuing and the continued expansion of our rich shopping and dining choices, it makes sense that those traveling to and from Covington help with the road and sidewalk maintenance and repairs. As evidenced by the hours of review from the Budget Priorities

Dissent opinion has it wrong on Prop 1 As a 12-year homeowner in Timberlane, I want to share my

passionate opinion. I know increased taxes hits everyone hard, and fundamentally they are tiresome. However the Transportation Benefit District on this upcoming ballot simply makes sense. As a member of the Covington Budget Priorities Advisory Committee, I learned firsthand just how much money our city government does not have, and how well they manage with what they do. as highly as you might think. And frankly, the pay for the new city manager, effectively the chief operating officer of Covington, seems a bit low to be competitive if you ask me. And donâ€™t we want the best managing what our taxes pay for? I do, and because of that I know compensation has to be competitive. There are other city budget costs that the dissent opinion authors criticize. I can tell you whatâ€™s wrong with things, but the true concerned citizen figures out how to fix it before complaining. The Transportation Benefit District was one of two recommendations the BPAC committee gave to the city. The beauty of the TBD is that people who drive in to Covington to shop will be helping to pay for our roads. This includes people from North Bend, Black Diamond, Enumclaw, Maple Valley, Kent. All who love to shop all these great stores we have so close that they donâ€™t have nearby. Letâ€™s let them help pay

for the roads they use to shop our awesome city. This resolution brings our sales tax equal to the cities around us who already have the Transportation Tax District in place. Please vote yes on Proposition No. 1 Sales and Use Tax for Transportation Improvements.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, also known by its much easier to pronounce name, CJD, is a neurodegenerative disease. A variant of CJD made headlines a few years back when people ate infected meat and became ill with mad cow disease. CJD, however, has not been linked to contaminated beef, and it is rare enough that it need not be a worry for most people. The symptoms of CJD include personality changes and anxiety; sudden jerky movements; difficulty speaking, thinking, and swallowing; and eventually heart and respiratory failure and coma. In the majority of cases, Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease occurs for no known reason. In the United States, about 5 to 10 percent of people with CJD have a family history of the disease or test positive for a genetic mutation associated with CJD. The last week of April is a busy time for planting vegetables. You can plant seeds of cool-season crops like beets, radish, lettuce, kale, cabbage and onions and add pregrown vegetable starts of leaf crops like lettuce as well. If you are looking for more color,

Hostas are the queen of the darkness when it comes to shade-loving perennials but a new perennial is climbing the rungs of the popularity ladder so look for beautiful brunnera plants this month at area

nurseries. Brunnera has large, colorful leaves much like a hosta but is more slug and deer resistant. Brunnera also displays sky blue blossoms on airy stems in the spring and a neat and tidy growing habit. Like hosta, the brunnera will look best in a shaded spot that has rich soil amended with compost and the plants will look their best if kept moist the first summer as they build a root system. Other perennials that will grow in shade are lamiums, primroses, corydalis, saxifrage and bleeding heart. For late summer and fall color add Japanese anemone but use this aggressive perennial only in areas of dry shade – Japanese anemone is tall, dramatic and attractive but a real

tramp in the garden as she will sneak into other beds uninvited.

one of your seminars) that plants with gray leaves are drought resistant, slug resistant and deer resistant. Sound like just what I need. Please give me the names of some gray foliage plants. C.R., Renton

You may not find 50 shades of gray at your local nursery but you will find soft gray leaves on lamb’s ear, finely cut foliage on the silver gray Artemisia and many shades of gray from various lavenders to add to the dry places in your garden. For contrast with all that shiny silver foliage add the rich burgundy of crimson barberry or the

drought-resistant Royal Purple smoke tree.

STAN KAWAMOTO HALL OF FAME A longtime resident of the Renton-Maple Valley area, Stan Kawamoto, will be inducted as part of the Oregon chapter Class of 2015 into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Portland. After a competitive career as state champion for Estacada High School and Portland State University, Kawamoto began officiating in 1967. He served as president the Portland officials association and the Western Washington association. He served as head official for the Oregon state tournament from 1982 through 1991. In 1995 he was named Puget Sound Official of the Year.

The nationally ranked Tahoma boys soccer team is on a winning streak. In fact, the Bears haven’t lost a game all season. The girls tennis season is roughly halfway complete and the Kentwood Conquerors are leading the South Puget Sound League 4A North Division with a 5-1 record.

The Bears are ranked sixth in the country in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s standings. The team is also rank No. 1 in Region V, according to the NSCAA. Tahoma is 19th in the TopDrawer ranking. Johnson said this team is “one of the most focused and enjoyable teams I’ve coached. They are self motivated and more disciplined than most teams I’ve been around.” The Bears hosted Thomas Jefferson Tuesday after the press deadline. Edvalson said it seems the construction crew was not following this plan. â€œIt doesnâ€™t appear that they were cutting and demolishing this bridge barrier in pieces, because in the aftermath, we didnâ€™t see the small chunks,â€? Edvalson said. â€œAccording to this demolition plan, they should have cut these 8 to 10 foot sections and have a big piece of equipment holding onto it while it was being cut, and then removing that section, so everything else would have been attached still.â€? Edvalson said. â€œWe didnâ€™t know when they would start that, but since it hadnâ€™t been discussed in those weekly meetings, the cityâ€™s assumption was that (the demolition) wasnâ€™t going to be pursued.â€? Part of discussing the demolition plan, said Edvalson, would have included reviewing a Site Specific Safety Plan (SSSP) drawn up by Highmark Concrete Contractors. Edvalson said no SSSP documents were received by the city or discussed during the weekly meetings. Edvalson also said the city was not aware of any demolition equipment movement or on-site flaggers until after the barrier wall fell because the demolition was not discussed.

A small section of concrete on the outside edge of the barrier would remain uncut by construction workers to keep the barrier attached to the bridge. These sections of the bridge were to be tipped off the bridge edge to â€œcleanly break free the small un-saw cut portion,â€? according to the demolition plan. Then the concrete sections, weighing between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds, would be pulled forward over the bridge and trucked away.

Position will be based out of the Federal Way office. The primary duty of a Circulation Manager (CM) is to manage a geographic district. The CM will be accountable for the assigned newspaper as follows: Recruiting, contracting and training independent contractors to meet delivery deadlines, rack and dealer collections, insuring delivery standards are being met and quality customer service. Position requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner; to occasionally lift and/or transport bundles weighing up to 25 pounds from ground level to a height of 3 feet; to deliver newspaper routes, including ability to negotiate stairs and to deliver an average of 75 newspapers per hour for up to 8 consecutive hours; to communicate with carriers and the public by telephone and in person; to operate a personal computer. Must possess reliable, insured, motor vehicle and a valid Washington State driverâ€™s license. Tara Christa Kreutzer

Retired federal drug prosecutor Monte Stiles will speak in Enumclaw the evening of April 29. Stiles, who spent most of his 28year career fighting drug crimes and those who profit from the drug trade, will address an audience in the Enumclaw High School commons. The event – which is free and open to the public – begins at 6 p.m. Those attending are expected to hear about local issues, how to identify addiction and to learn about early intervention and prevention. Stiles is being brought to Enumclaw by the Foothills Healthy Community Coalition, a part of the Rainier Foothills Wellness Foundation. Alfred H. Killip, PE

Alfred (Al) Hartzell Killip passed away on Friday evening, February 1, 2015 at an adult care home in Kent, WA at the age of 81. He left this life to be with Jesus, his Lord and Savior. Al was born on July 25, 1933 in Cleveland, OH, the only child of Thomas A. and Helen L. Killip. He is survived by his wife, Geri, and nieces and nephews and their families. He and Geri moved to WA in 1970 to start a new job. Al was a Professional Mechanical Engineer for 39 years. He loved his work which allowed him to travel to many countries. He ended his career at the Boeing Company in 1998. There will be a memorial service on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at 2PM at Alliance Bible Church, 19320 SE 240th St., Covington,WA, 98042. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Seattle Union Gospel Mission or Alliance Bible Church.

John Schiller passed away at his home in Maple Valley on April 18, 2015. John was 97 born on July 22, 1917 to John and Magdalena Schiller in Markinch, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was the youngest of six children with five older sisters. The family moved from Canada to Seattle when John was six and he grew up in Rainier Valley, attending Franklin high school and Edison Vocational School. He worked at one company, Washington Iron Works, for 43 years. His work ethic was appreciated and rewarded with many promotions as he began as an apprentice and retired as Superintendent of the Machine Shop in 1979. John was preceded in death by his loving wife and best friend of 68 years, Claudia (Billie). Their love story began when they married in June of 1944 and moved to their home on Lake Lucerne, which John had purchased in February of that same year. They shared a beautiful and romantic life together. John and Billie lived life to the fullest and had many friends and family that joined them in the fun adventures. They loved golfing, time at their vacation condos in Ocean Shores, and Hawaii, camping, mushroom picking, beach combing, traveling to Mexico, Fiji, and Reno and backpacking the beaches including the West Coast of Vancouver Island. John was an avid gardener and regularly donated fresh produce to the Maple Valley Food Bank. He’ll be remembered for his “Schiller’s Killer” tomatoes and “John Schiller’s Homemade Pickles and Sauerkraut” (both for connoisseurs only) which he made annually and generously shared with friends and family. He also enjoyed playing the stock market and continued trading up to just days before passing. John was a man of integrity, strong character and was respected and loved by many, some calling him the father they never had. He became a naturalized US citizen in 1957 and had an unwavering love for his country. He is survived by daughters Judy (Jim) Coovert and Joan (Allen) Scott, both of Maple Valley; grandchildren Daniel (Kori) Melton, Tempe, AZ; Darren Melton, Maple Valley; Scott (Michele) Melton, Columbia Falls, MT; Melody (Kevin) Downey, Fall Brook, CA; seven great grandchildren and one great great grandson. John will be missed and remembered for being an incredible man. A Celebration of Life is being planned. Details and guestbook can be found at “marlattfuneralhome.com”.
