Harbor School purchases Carpe Diem Schools will merge but keep separate buildings for now By SARAH LOW Staff Writer
Harbor School has purchased Carpe Diem Primary School, resulting in the island’s only private K-8 school. Those involved in the merger, which was formally approved by Harbor School’s board on Monday, say that while the purchase happened quickly, the idea has been in the works for years. “This was the logical next step,” said Janice Campbell, former owner and head of Carpe Diem. “For the school, myself, for all involved to continue to grow.” Campbell has owned and run Carpe Diem, a for-profit school for children in kindergarten through the third grade, for the last eight years, and she was a teacher there for four years prior to that. Activists plot to stand in the way of Shell Backbone Campaign, others will try to stop oil rig from leaving Seattle By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer
As a massive oil rig came into view last Friday morning in Port Angeles, protesters were already on the shore. As dawn broke,
they slipped kayaks into the water, preparing to greet the incoming rig with a small rally. The group of activists, which included some islanders, made headlines for their part in the on-the-water protest against Shell’s oil drilling the Arctic. However, those involved say last Friday’s demonstration was just a warm-up for what’s to come. They’re hoping hundreds more will join them on the water for the main events — a floating demonstration in Elliot Bay in May and finally an
attempt to block the rig, the Polar Pioneer, and prevent it from leaving Seattle and heading to the Arctic sometime this summer. “This is a historic moment,” said Bill Moyer, director of the Backbone Campaign, a political action group based on Vashon. “It feels like 11 years of work we’ve done have in a sense been in preparation for this very moment.” SEE ACTIVISTS, 17

Local neurologist leads in unearthing the medical benefits of marijuana By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer

Last week the grange hall was packed for a lecture by Dr. Ethan Russo. The standing-room-only crowd was silent as Russo, a neurologist, flipped through a PowerPoint presentation packed with charts, graphs and molecular diagrams, and easily rattled off scientific terms. Only the occasional mention of cannabis or picture of a leafy green plant revealed to the untrained listener that Russo’s lecture was all about marijuana. The talk, which drew people from Seattle and around the region, was a coming out of sorts for Russo. For several years, the 63-year-old has
worked quietly out of his Vashon home, directing and publishing studies as one of the country’s leading medical marijuana researchers. He’s rarely spoken publicly about his work, and then only at medical conferences in far-flung locales. That is until recently, when Russo left the large pharmaceutical company he worked for, removing what he called his velvet handcuffs, and the legalization of recreational marijuana in Washington created a friendlier climate to stand up and talk about pot. After tearing down the old McFeeds building last week, Vashon Allied Arts has begun construction of its new performing arts center, which is now expected to cost nearly $20 million. As Sellen Construction, the general contractor for the project, set up on the site on Monday, VAA staff were finishing alerting neighbors, finalizing logistics around parking and preparing for the noise and disruptions that will come during the next 12 months of construction. Still, Executive Director Molly Reed said last week that she and other VAA staff were “delirious with joy” that construction was finally starting. VAA began planning for its 20,000-square-foot arts center several years ago and originally planned to break ground last November. However, the building boom in Seattle resulted in higher costs for subcontractors, and the $800,0000 VAA had added to its budget wasn’t enough to cover the additional costs. Over the last several months, VAA and Sellen worked to reduce costs by using value engineering and rebidding some parts of the project. The final total for the project, Reed said, is $19.7 million, including contingencies. When VAA unveiled designs for the center in 2011, it anticipated it would cost $16.5 million.
Reed said she’s not discouraged by the escalating costs. Islanders have continued to give large donations, and VAA has now raised $18.5 million. A loan will cover the difference and will also provide cash flow until some of the pledges are fulfilled. Reed said VAA staff are confident that the final $1.2 million will come in through donations and grants. “The board would not have approved it moving forward if we didn’t feel we could do it,” she said. During construction, business and events will carry on at the Blue Heron. However, parking will be a challenge, Reed noted, as construction will block most of the existing parking. The organization is working to designate spots for ADA-accessible parking, as well as an area for parents to drop off children for classes. VAA staff will park by the Seattle Distilling Company, but for concerts and events, most attendees will have to park on the road, which Reed said could be “dicey and inconvenient.” Some of VAA’s daytime programs and summer camps will take place elsewhere due to daytime construction noise. But non-weekday events will still be held at the Blue Heron. “We’re trying to move as much as possible,” Reed said, “but there will be weekend and evening events here.” VAA hopes to complete the building in April of 2016.

Schools foundation targets mental health, STEM for 2015 campaign By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer
The Vashon Schools Foundation launched its annual spring fundraising drive this week with the goal of bringing in $247,000 for the island’s public schools. The drive officially began on Monday and will close May 5 with GiveBig, a fundraising event hosted by the Seattle Foundation, which matches a portion of the donations made through the program on that day. “The funding that the community generates is critical to keeping the core and also to creating and enhancing what kids need to really thrive,� said Ruthann Howell, the president of the foundation. Now in its fifth year, the Vashon Schools Foundation has raised nearly $2 million to help fund vital staff and programming efforts that the state does not provide for. This year, in concert with the district, the foundation has put forward a dozen initiatives to be funded through the drive. Among the first tier of priorities are mental health and suicide prevention efforts in grades K through 12; science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program enhancements across all grade levels and new math textbooks for grades nine through 12. Members of the foundation stress the importance of donations to high quality education, particularly because state funding to school districts across the state is still

below 2008 levels, according to Howell. Helping students thrive is the motivation behind the mental health initiative, said Donna Nespor, the foundation’s administrative coordinator. In previous years, the foundation raised money for the nuts and bolts of education: to keep teachers employed and address concrete classroom needs, but attention to healthy emotional development will bring a more holistic approach to learning and students needs. “It is a basic part of our education,� she said. “If that is not in place, students are not going to learn math or science or the arts.� Indeed, Howell said, those involved in this year’s campaign are looking more broadly at education and redefining what is central to it. “We are redefining the core. The core is more than what the state funds. The core is what our kids need,� she said. This mental health initiative is slated for $58,000; donations will provide start-up funds for curriculum, staff training and program coordination, according to Superintendent Michael Soltman. Other top priorities, STEM and science program enhancements, are to receive $52,000, which will be used, in part, to enhance elementary science programs, Soltman said. The district is recruiting local scientists to provide real-life science experiences in the classrooms, aligned

with the new Next Generation Science Standards, which 26 states have adopted to guide science education. Funds will also go to curriculum and equipment renewal: new microscopes, graphing calculators and other learning tools. In recent years, the foundation has attempted to raise larger sums of money than it is this year, Howell noted, and fell short as the economy improved and the sense of crisis no longer loomed. Last year it raised about $335,000 out of a $500,000 goal, similar to fundraising results in 2013. Now the district is on more solid financial footing than it was a few years ago, according to school board chair Laura Wiskik, thanks to higher than predicted enrollment and careful budgeting practices. Foundation board members say they believe this year’s goal is a realistic one and are looking for a broad base of families to contribute — either one time or with smaller donations on a monthly basis. “We want the community to feel very good about investing in success,� Howell said. “We anticipate this is a very reachable goal.�

County officials will visit for open house

A slate of King County officials will visit Vashon next week to discuss current county work on the island during the annual Community Service Area (CSA) open house. Officials who plan to be at the event include King County Councilmember Joe McDermott, Sheriff John Urquhart and Rhonda Berry, a top official at the King County Executive’s office. Harold Taniguchi, director of the Department of Transportation; John Starbard, director of the permitting department, and Alan Painter, manager of the CSA program, will also be there. Painter called the open house an opportunity for islanders to hear from these officials about current county projects and
bring any questions or concerns. “I think we have a pretty good group of folks there,” he said. The county will make available a document listing current and future plans on Vashon, such as environmental restoration projects, road work and changes to Metro bus service. There will also be information on the CSA grant program, which issues annual grants to nonprofit groups. The county began the CSA program about there years ago as a new model for engaging with citizens in unincorporated areas. There are now nine CSAs in King County. The CSA open house will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at McMurray Middle School.
Quilt shop to close, hold farewell event Island Quilter’s last day in business will be this Saturday, and owner Anja Moritz says she intends to go out with a bang by throwing a farewell party for friends and customers that evening. The band The Rumblestrips will play from 6 to 8 p.m., when deejay Marcus Fellbaum will take over and play 1970s disco music, and refreshments will be served. Moritz opened Island Quilter in her home in 2007, and the business has grown considerably since then. She moved into town in 2009 to the space that
now houses Spider’s Ski and Sports. In 2011, she and her partner Paul Robinson moved to their current location. Earlier this year building owners Bob Hawkins and Chuck Robinson sold the building to an island couple who plan to use the space for an exercise facility and retail space. While Moritz had hoped to keep her business on the island, she said last week that no available space on Vashon would allow her to continue offering a large selection of fabrics, as well as what she enjoys most
about her store — special exhibits and classes. As of Monday, she had not found a space for the store offisland either, and she and Paul intend to put their inventory in storage while they continue looking. Moritz said that she has begun the application process to work for the post office, and also shared a more lighthearted daydream involving an old ferry. “The Fabric Ferry is coming soon to a port near you,” she joked. — Susan Riemer

Vashon moments are times to celebrate
Foundation is realistic as it works for robust schools
It was a Vashon moment. Walking in lower Gold Beach, we spotted a mature bald eagle landing on a tree just ahead. As we drew closer, it seemed that this eagle had an awfully large head. At least there was a very large shock of white near the top of the tree. As we drew closer, we saw why: There were two eagles, side by side, surveying the shore and the sound, motionless except for occasional tilts of those great heads. We were pretty much spellbound and didn’t care to resume our walk any time soon. Another woman joined us. She looked up to where we pointed. After a few quiet moments, she put into words what my friend and I were feeling: “It’s so beautiful it makes my heart ache.” Can you relate? Every day I see or I hear something that more or less kills me with delight, that leaves me like a needle in the haystack of light. It is what I was born for. (Mary Oliver, “Mindful”) Vashon moments happen a lot. This island is a place where it is not uncommon for people to point at something that breaks their hearts with delight. If we happen to be driving, we may pull over to the side of the road — or stop in the middle of it — roll down the window, point and say, “Wow, have a look at that.” We might say it out loud, even if there’s no one in the car with us. Sometimes what stops us may be something that’s considered rare. More often, though, it’s something commonplace: your neighbor’s goat’s head turned just
In past years, spring was when the Vashon School District was in crisis. With insufficient funding from the state, layoff notices were issued to teachers, sending ripples of worry that beloved instructors and entire classes would be lost. Volunteers stepped in and created the Vashon School Foundation and raised hundreds of thousands each year to fill the school district’s large budget gap. One year, as part of the effort, a multi-age class at Chautauqua even held a bake sale to raise funds for their teacher’s position. As the district’s financial situation has gradually improved, some have wondered if the Vashon Schools Foundation would cease to exist when jobs and class sizes were no longer at risk. That time is here, and the foundation is as active as ever, now raising money for other needs at the district. Sound like a bait and switch? Look a little closer. The schools aren’t facing a budget crisis, but they’re still receiving less funding than they did seven years ago. The state Supreme Court recently declared that Washington isn’t fully funding education. Until it does, public schools such as those on Vashon won’t have enough money for things like updating classroom curriculum and replacing textbooks in a timely manner — much less adding new programs. In recent years, donors have given less to the foundation. Lacking more urgent needs, the foundation has appropriately shrunk its request of the community to about $250,000, compared with half a million dollars in recent years. This shows those at the helm of the nonprofit are being both mindful and realistic in their approach to bolstering schools. Should families continue to give to the schools foundation? It depends on what sort of schools they want. Take a look at page 4 of this issue, where the foundation’s top priorities are spelled out. Should the fundraiser fail, the island will no doubt still have strong public schools. But filling the gap will allow for more robust programs, updated teaching in the important areas of math and science and more programming on topics district officials have identified as vital on Vashon: mental health and suicide prevention. The foundation also wants to help fund the district’s preschool, something research increasingly show sets young children up for later success in school. Robust schools benefit the whole community by attracting new families that contribute to the local economy and encouraging them to stay. Not surprisingly, foundations to support public schools are becoming commonplace in communities that have high expectations for their schools. Today’s students deserve the best education they can get. Until the state improves classroom funding, on Vashon, our foundation is here to stay. But it has appeared to set realistic and important goals, and hopefully the community will respond in kind.
ENVIRONMENT By CARLA PRYNE so; your other neighbor’s mare galloping across the pasture, the wind and the light catching her mane and tail; a young buck strolling across the tide flats at Tramp Harbor. Nor am I talking about the exceptional, the fearful, the dreadful, the very extravagant — but of the ordinary, the common, the very drab, the daily presentations. Last week a semi rolled over on I-5. It was transporting 14 million honeybees to a blueberry farm in Lynden. Most of the bees died, were killed, or were hauled to a nearby dump. That kind of news breaks the heart — a heartbreak that comes not from delight, but from deep sadness. This Earth Day, and every day, there is much to be sad about. But there is also much good news, and it is happening all over the world. Some of that good news for the earth is happening right here on Vashon Island. People are hitching their energies and love, their skills and creativity, to healing the earth: not just bees, but salmon, trees, soil, water. It is what I was born for — to look, to listen, to lose myself inside this soft world — to instruct myself over and over in joy, and acclamation.

In response to last week’s commentary by Emily Scott (“Don’t feel guilty for skipping the farmers market,” April 15), I just want to say this: Actually, we need you. One of the primary ways to support a vibrant local economy on Vashon is to have a thriving market. Fifty-five percent of our family income is generated at the farmers market. Additionally, a few of the more than 50 businesses that got their start at the Vashon Farmers Market include Patty’s Tamales (soon selling to Costco) Anu Rana’s, Zamorana and King Caramel.

Maybe that’s part of what we do for each other as fellow members of the commonwealth — really the “common gift” — of Vashon and Maury Islands. We share moments of joy and acclamation. And in so doing, we encourage each other in the wider work of healing the planet, the commons of life we share with all who live on this blue-green pellet, bright in a very large universe. “Look!” we exclaim, jabbing an elbow into our friend’s rib and pointing to something lovely on this good land. We share with each other a few of the “daily presentations” which offer themselves for our delight, and our transformation, every single day. We share not just delight, but gratitude and love. We share work, with many hands on deck and boots on the ground. And when that’s done, we sometimes celebrate with great jam sessions, singing and strumming at the end of the day. This is the kind of community that is commonplace here. This is the kind of community that feeds the soul and allows us to dare and dream big as we join others in what has sometimes been called the great work of our generation. I won’t drive the road down to lower Gold Beach any time soon without remembering that walk and those eagles. Just another Vashon moment.

parks and who should now step up and help pass the levy. I changed my mind — something I seldom do — when I separated out, in my own mind, the need to pass the levy from the need to elect new commissioners. So I am working with Kristin Pesman and the other Friends of the Parks to look to the future, vote and then vote aye. Then we can do the hard work to recruit candidates for the November election. I have read all of the letters on the subject and have placed my name and that of the Keepers of Point Robinson on all of the advertising. I do so again, and in particular do I ask all of the island community who enjoy Point Robinson, for that is my first love in our park system, to join me in voting and then to vote yes. And I ask this knowing that there are many reservations about giving the board another influx of money to spend with little concern for public desires. But I see this yes vote as being one for the good of the entire island community, not just for a few groups or individual users. Once we have the next round of funding secure, we can then work to elect a board that will truly reflect what the community wants. Lack of park programs is noteworthy, disappointing How sad to note the paucity of child programs and camps sponsored by our Vashon Park District. In the 54 offered camps and programs listed in “Island Child,” the park district is only mentioned as the location of three sports camps being sponsored by other entities. Vashon Allied Arts, which receives no levy support, is sponsoring 25 programs, ranging from chess to summer musical theater. Our park district, which receives over $1 million annually in levy funds, appears to sponsor zero programs. Thanks to the individuals and organizations who sponsor such an array of opportunities for island children. — Janet Quimby

Criticism rings true Emma Amiad recently recounted the frank opinion of a visiting potential real-estate client. That person was alarmed by the sloven and wild appearance of some island citizens. I recognize the angst. I, too, found myself recently appalled. We have a great thrift shop. I like being among the first in line at 10 a.m. to skim the pickings. After a late night shift, I awoke to find I had just

enough time to secure my position. I jumped from bed, pulled on my sweatpants, and drove to Granny’s. After shopping, I headed to the village for errands. Up and down the grocery aisles I walked with other causally dressed persons. I stood in line there, the hardware store and post office. Finally I went home. My consumed large cup of coffee suggested the tinkle. I was sure these sweats had a zipper. Exploring behind, I discovered that not only had I put my pants on backwards, but the zipper was wide open. No one had said a thing to me of it all morning. At least I had my underwear on. The next week I’m exposed to further outrage. Back up to the village for more errands, I tried to do better, first by checking my zipper for forward orientation and full-mast position. It was colder, so I adjusted the sweatpants to tie looser to go over my long underwear. Stopping for petrol, I went to prepay. As I left to pump my gas, a big, burley guy approached to enter. The very moment I graciously held the door open for him, my loose sweats dropped to my ankles, leaving me standing in my long johns. He stared down, and then with eye contact asked, “Happy to see me?” I was relieved Emma was not there with her guests. She might have commented, “Happens all the time here.”

By Chris Austin It’s a good thing we didn’t get our islands’ names like T or C, New Mexico, did. “T or C” is the shortened version of Truth or Consequences. The town was originally called Hot Springs but citizens decided they’d rather be named after a radio program. If we had done the same thing this area might be called “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me” which would probably cause problems every time a customs agent asked you where you’re from. In our case both Vashon and Maury islands were named after people who at one time were sworn enemies of the United States, so that’s awkward. Vashon and Maury Islands were named simply Vashon Island by George Vancouver in 1792. George and his crew were on a four-and-a-half-year global expedition (1791-1795) to see what the earth had and how it could benefit Great Britain. This included documenting new peoples, plants, insects and animals. They cataloged rivers, islands, mountains and the coastlines of five continents. And all of it had to be named. Vancouver and company were about halfway through their journey when they became the first Europeans to enter Puget Sound. The Sound itself is named after Peter Puget, a crew member who explored its southern end by rowboat. By then it must have been difficult to think up new names for stuff. For instance, Mount Baker was named after the crewman who first saw it. Even his ship got in on the name game with Discovery Bay and Discovery Island. And I have it on good authority that Mount Rainier was almost named “Mount Mr. Whiskers” after George’s cat. Good old nepotism played a part with Vancouver’s appellations too. He shrewdly named Vashon after his old boss, James Vashon. Vashon was an officer in the British Royal Navy rising to the rank of admiral. Indeed Vashon’s family relations influenced several local features. He married the sister of Admiral Peter Rainier, a la Mount Rainier, and his niece was married to Lieutenant Baker (the Baker who got a mountain named after him because he looked at it). Early in his career however, our namesake fought for the wrong side in America’s War of Independence. He was pretty good at it too, sinking our ships and taking lots of prisoners. We’re getting ready to put our house on the market and we have a question. Last year the septic system backed up and we had to have a new drainfield put in. We didn’t get any permits but we think it was all done right and it’s working fine. Do we have to disclose that? What if the County finds out we did it without a permit? Can they come after us?

You will have to disclose that you had a septic repair. I would recommend you contact our local septic certification technician and have the system tested. You will be required to do that as a part of any sale anyway. If all is well you will have that report to show to prospective buyers. You should also have the tank pumped and cleaned while you’re at it. That certification should be good for six months, so if you price your home well it should sell and close well within that time. The issue of what the County will do is more difficult to answer. Most, if not all, issues that come up with code enforcement and the health department are the result of a complaint. The staff of the code enforcement office has told me that they don’t have the personnel or time to check every property out to see if it’s in compliance. It’s rare that King County code enforcement gets involved in a real estate transaction. Sometimes a potential buyer will call the County to see if they can do certain things on a property they intend to buy. That can sometimes trigger an investigation. In my experience, that’s rare. We have so many properties that have had unpermitted repairs and additions that I can’t see the County ever trying to get everyone properly permitted. I would also recommend that you have a home inspection done ahead of putting the house on the market. You can get a real head start on issues that may come up when a buyer does their inspection. Anything serious can be taken care of ahead of time.

This Zellner brothers film that premiered and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, stars Rinko Kikuchi (above, right, with David Zellner) as Kumiko, a young woman from Tokyo who believes the movie “Fargo” was a documentary. Obsessed with finding the money that was buried in the Minnesota wilderness by kidnappers in the film, Kumiko embarks on a journey across the Pacific that is both inspirational and devastating. The story is based on an urban legend surrounding the death of a Japanese woman named Takako Konishi. “Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter” plays from Friday, April 24, through Monday, April 27, at the Vashon Theatre. Described by music critics as a young Bob Dylan, singer songwriter Kanzler and his band have an alt country-folk music sound. Kanzler will be playing with veteran island musicians.

Occasionally there are watershed moments that change the course of one’s life in a single moment. For islander and musician Jason Everett, that instant arrived via a song on the car radio when Everett, age 16 at the time, heard the title track “Quiet” for a band called Ancient Future. Fast forward to next Wednesday when Everett will perform with Ancient Future at the Vashon Theatre. Everett, who trained on the clarinet and was studying to be a classical bassoonist when he first heard Ancient Future, recalled the effect the new music had on him. “I was possessed. I couldn’t concentrate on driving and had to pull over to listen,” he said. “Then I rushed home and called the station to get the title so I could buy the album. Ancient Future started me on my world music path.” Considered the first and longest running ensemble dedicated to world music, Ancient Future formed in 1978. The band and its leader, guitar player Matthew Montfort, coined the term “world fusion music” to describe the group’s contemporary mix of traditional Indian, African, Balinese, Middle Eastern and South American rhythms. Though Everett received a full bassoon scholarship from Northern Arizona University, his true passion belonged to the bass. The instrument, Everett said, was his world. He dropped out of college to play bass professionally in jazz clubs and eventually discovered the fretless bass, which began his pursuit of Indian music in earnest. Everett, who ran Vashon Allied Arts for eight years as executive director, first met Montfort when Ancient Future performed at the Blue Heron 12 years ago. “I was able to tell Montfort my story, that he changed my life. But I didn’t stay connected until Facebook came along,” Everett said. Through social media and island drummer Bill Moyer, who is a student of Vishal Nagar, a member of Ancient Future, Everett recently reconnected with Montfort. Nagar encouraged Everett to audition for

Everett flew to California for an audition and by the end, Montfort had signed him on to tour Washington with the band. Everett, who calls himself a fusion artist, was beyond excited. He reveres Montfort and Nagar for their musical mastery. “These musicians begin training at age 3. They develop a depth of knowledge that is being lost. It is amazing that musicians of this caliber are not valued more. They are masters.” Everett said that after 9/11, interest in world music started to decline. Montfort’s self-described mission is to reintroduce world music to help breakdown cultural barriers that have gone up post 9/11. Everett also is committed to building a greater audience for world music, especially for children. “I want to bring kids into the music, inspire them to think outside the box,” Everett said.
On Wednesday, Everett will provide the opportunity for islanders to hear live world music as he plays the seven-string fretless bass with Montfort on the scalloped fretboard guitar — a cross between a sitar and steel string guitar — and Nagar on the tabla. The tabla is an Indian hand-drum that Everett says sounds as if multiple people are drumming due to the speed with which the instrument is played. Everett said the concert is a dream come true for him. “I remember playing Ancient Future’s CDs,” he said, “and thinking if only I could ever play with guys like this.” The show will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday April 29, at the Vashon Theatre. Tickets are $15 in advance at the theater box office and will be $18 at the door for general admission. Student tickets are $10. Proceeds from the concert will benefit Vashon Allied Arts’ scholarship program.
Incendiary play ignites issues of Musical contrasts featured in race, class and power chorale spring program Enrique Henao
Renowned guitarist plays solo concert World-renowned classical guitarist Enrique Henao returns to the island for a solo concert at 7 p.m. Friday at the Methodist church. Known for his soulful interpretations of flamenco and his rhythmical Latin American renditions, Heneo is a master of classical and jazz music. He has performed in over 80 countries, garnering acclaim as one of the world’s finest guitarists. Henao has also performed with music legends, including Charlie Parker, Sammy Davis Jr., Johnny and June Carter Cash and Andres Segovia. Admission is by donation.
“The North Pool,” a one-act psychological drama that involves an emotionally and politically charged conversation between a high school viceprincipal and a Middle-Eastern born transfer student will be presented as a staged reading at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Blue Heron. Written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph, author of “Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo,” the play is directed by Lisa Breen and will feature Chaim Rosemarin in the role of vice-principal Dr. Danielson and Reverend Marc Powell as the high school student Khadim Asmaan. The story begins with Danielson calling Asmaan into his office to ostensibly discuss the student’s absence during a fire drill. It quickly becomes clear that this is a ploy to interrogate Khadim about other incidents that touch on issues of class, race and power. The fast-paced interchange between student and principal becomes a commentary on prevailing cultural prejudice and paranoia, but as the play unfolds, the volatile argument between the two characters reveals painful past stories that end up transforming the characters in unexpected ways.Lighting design is by Jamie Dulfer, sound by Kevin Pottinger and music/sound by Marc Powell. Tickets are $12 for VAA members and seniors, $16 for general audience and $10 for students ages 14 and up. Tickets are sold at the Blue Heron and vashonalliedarts.org.
Vashon Island Chorale will present its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Church. Artistic Director Gary Cannon chose two works — “From the Bavarian Highlands” by Edward Elgar and “Messe de Requiem” by Gabriel Fauré. He explained the pieces are contrasting compositions. “One (is) secular, the other sacred; one English, the other French; one with piano, the other with chamber orchestra; one largely a boisterous romp and the other gentle in mood,” he said in a recent email. Elgar’s piece is set to six poems written by his wife Alice during the couple’s regular excursions to southern Bavaria. Each song describes a different story of their trip. Fauré began composing his requiem mass in 1887. He made some unusual decisions in his choice of texts, omitting the traditional “Dies irae” or day of judgement sequence and borrowing the “In paradisum” from the burial liturgy. Fauré completed the piece in 1893. Pianist Linda Lee will perform for the Elgar piece, and Karin Choo will be the concert mistress for the 15-piece chamber orchestra in the requiem. Glenn Guhr and the Vashon-based soprano Holly Boaz will sing solos. Tickets are $18, $15 for seniors, $5 for youth to age 18 and are sold at brownpapertickets.org and at the Vashon Bookshop.

Bird watching Field Trip The Vashon-Maury Island Audubon Society hosts free birding field trips to different island locations the second Saturday of each month. Non-members and levels of birders are welcome. Meet at the Ober Park park and ride at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 9, to carpool. Bring binoculars and a scope if you have them.
This series of workshops is presented by the Vashon Island Growers Association (VIGA) and is for those who want to learn to grow their own food or expand their gardening skills. VIGA will offer several programs between now and September. The program on Sunday, June 7, will feature Jo Robinson, well-known author of the book “Eating on the Wild Side,” and Julia Lakey, founder of the Vashon Community Care garden, which is an example of deep mulch gardening, a method that uses almost no added water. In July, a workshop will be held at Lotus and Barb Smith’s garden in town, which is an example of growing food in a small area. The program will focus on keeping up with the garden in mid-summer, weeds and succession planting. The final workshop of the year will be in September and will feature Jen Williams, who is growing for seed saving

Innovative islanders give old items a new lease on life

Grad gowns go green with recycling program High school graduation can be expensive, with one of many costs being the regalia worn at the graduation ceremony. But one program run by parents is cutting those costs for families and recycling in the process. Several years ago, some parents collaborated to start collecting old graduation caps, gowns and stoles to be lent out for the Vashon High School graduation each year. Karen Heit is currently in charge of the effort and keeps about 200 graduation gowns of varying sizes at her home. This year she matched them with 35 graduating seniors. “For me, personally, it’s about helping the kids and about being green,” she said, noting that she plans to use some of the ripped and stained gowns to make ribbon to decorate at the next graduation ceremony. “I’m really anti-waste, especially with stuff like this,” she said. Heit plans to run the program through 2017, the year her youngest son graduates. She’s looking for a volunteer to take over after that. For more information, contact her at heit6@msn.com.
Shelves find new homes at local nonprofits When Tag Gornall of Island GreenTech learned that True Value would replace all its shelving as it transitioned to Ace Hardware, he hotfooted down to the hardware store. “I walked in and said, ‘I’ll take it. How soon can I get it?’” he recalled. Now, GreenTech is distributing the shelves, which would have otherwise been scrapped, to Granny’s Attic, the Vashon Tool Library and a woodworking co-op that is starting up. Granny’s Business Manager Tim Johnson noted that Granny’s has benefitted heavily from used fixtures over the years. The counter in its new space is from The Little House, and it has glass display cases donated by the heritage museum. “There’s no original fixtures on Vashon,” Gornall joked. “It’s all just circulating ownership.” Last Friday True Value owners met with some of the shelf recipents to teach them how to to assemble the shelves. The moment Moyer refers to has been in the making since the Port of Seattle earlier this year approved a lease for Shell to use the port as a home base for its efforts to drill oil drilling in the Arctic. The move has drawn criticism from those against exploratory oil drilling in the Artic, with many saying that Seattle shouldn’t support endeavors that will ultimately contribute to climate change. Shell has also been much maligned by environmentalists concerned that drilling in the Arctic could lead to environmental destruction. An oil spill in the isolated Arctic, they argue, could be difficult to stop and could cause damage similar to or worse than the Gulf spill five years ago. Outraged, some local activists thought a water-based demonstration was an obvious choice, Moyer said. However, protest plans weren’t formalized until Seattle Port Commissioner Bill Bryant was secretly recorded revealing when the rig would come into Seattle and joked that the port had been “threatened with a flotilla of kayaks.” “We thought now we have to do it. … Make him eat his words,” Moyer said. Now, the Backbone Campaign has joined forces with several other political groups — Rising Tide Seattle, 350 Seattle, Bayan USA and the newly formed Mosquito Fleet — to plan such a flotilla. Asked whether he thought the Polar Pioneer could truly be stopped from making its way to the Arctic, Moyer simply said, “If we don’t try, we’re guaranteed to fail.” Ross and Sellers, however, said that with enough kayaks and other boats, they believe they could delay Shell’s plans by as much as a few days. Eventually, Shell will move forward with its plans, they admit, but not before the activists make a problem for them. “If we can block this thing, we can create a crisis that forces the issue into a larger spotlight, and that’s how we’re going to win,” Ross said. “I think it’s unlikely we’re going to stop it completely from going up to the Arctic, but we’re going to make it as costly to them as possible, both financially and in their public image.” Moyer noted that while he and other activists were initially offended at the idea that Shell’s oil rig would be parked in Seattle, they’re now thinking of it as an opportunity to bring light to larger issues around Arctic drilling and climate change. Track team sees success in Tacoma Soccer team falls in hard-fought game against Bellevue squad

A small but mighty Pirate track and field team seized the day, as well as a collection of first-place finishes, in a league meet last Thursday at Charles Wright Academy. The spring break week reduced the team to just 15 participants, but both boys’ and girls’ teams managed a fourth-place finish overall among the eight teams in attendance. Four of the five boys who competed in the meet took top-four spots in their events. Freshman Gerry Gerrior pushed past fellow sprinters for a close but satisfying first-place finish in the boys’ 200meter event with a time of 24.69, after his fifth-place finish in the 100 meters. Both sprints were personal records (PRs) for Gerrior. Freshman comrade Hunter Justis also enjoyed a PR in two runs as he placed fourth in the 800 meters and sixth in the mile. Nate Lawson continues to improve his form and function in the javelin throw, demonstrated by his win in that event with a commanding PR launch of 144 feet, 5 inches. The Vashon varsity boys’ soccer team played Bellevue Christian last Friday under great conditions, if not a slightly cool temperature, at the Vashon Stadium. The guests were reported to be the best team in the league with an undefeated record. They brought all the swagger that a roster loaded with senior players would suggest. The expectations that Bellevue Christian would automatically be a shoe-in for a birth in the state finals this year was put to the test by the Vashon Pirates. Vashon defense played the best game of the season. Controlling and clearing out of the back was not an issue as the Pirate defense absorbed relentless attack after attack. The frustration mounted for Bellevue as it could not find a single way through the defensive stronghold that was clearly led by Vashon center backs Gerardo Pereyda and Dan Green. Pirate mid-fielders then stepped up by controlling the play and dominated Bellevue Christian. The senior-dominated,

top-tier varsity team from Bellevue got frustrated and was out-played by Vashon freshmen and sophomores. Vashon was definitely inside their minds, and Bellevue players were complaining and whining about it. That said, the inability of the Pirate forwards to take advantage of finishing on goal and a slight lapse in the opening minutes of the game that led to a penalty kick caused Bellevue Christian to win 1-0. The final score is all that matters, and Bellevue Christian knows it as they keep their clean record. The takeaway from this game for Bellevue is if they believe that this is their year for state, they better bring a better game against the likes of younger and more talented teams like Vashon. The Pirates will try to salvage any hopes of a post-season with two more home league games, one on Tuesday, after press time, and another on Friday. They wrap up their regular season the following week with a succession of away games.

Baseball team loses one, wins one over break By CHERYL PRUETT For The Beachcomber
With four games scheduled over the last week’s spring break, the Pirate baseball team was looking to make up some valuable field time. Unfortunately, Monday’s contest against North Kitsap was called due to monsoon, and Saturday’s game against University Prep was cancelled. On Wednesday, April 15, the Pirates came up one run short in an exciting, close and hotly contested pitching duel against league rival Seattle Christian. The final score was 2-1. The game was an amazing 0-0 tie going into the seventh inning before the Pirates blinked, giving up two runs on an error and a hit. Vashon mounted a furious comeback in the bottom of the seventh. With one runner on base, Clyde Pruett dug out an infield single. On his subsequent steal, mayhem ensued over a hotly contested call that resulted in Pruett being called out and head coach Steve Hall being ejected for the first time in his 13-year Vashon coaching career. Chester Pruett came up big with a clutch RBI shot that
would have scored his brother from second if the play had been called correctly. Logan Hawkins was the pitcher of record, with another strong showing. Over the seven innings he allowed only two runs on six hits, he walked two and struck out three. On Friday, April 17, the Pirates hosted 2A Sequim in a fun, sun-soaked game, winning 6-3. Josh Myer went the distance allowing three runs on six hits with only one walk and six strikeouts. The Pirate offense came alive, getting their six runs on 10 hits and five walks. Hawkins hit the first home run of the year for the Pirates, sending a solo shot over the right field fence. The JV Pirates won two games over the break, beating both Overlake, 20-8, and the Sequim JV, 11-6. The Pirates will play Seattle Christian again on Thursday, April 23, in Seattle. Vashon Youth Baseball and Softball will host its annual Opening Day Ceremony this Saturday, April 25. The Pirates will play a home game against The Bush School at 10 a.m. at the high school field.

Rowers bring a bevy of medals home from Oregon regatta By PAT CALL For The Beachcomber
It has been a year since Vashon’s rowers journeyed to Dexter Lake in the Cascade foothills southeast of Eugene, Oregon. In that time the regatta has expanded to become one of the premier rowing events on the West Coast spring schedule, and a couple of changes were apparent. The college portion of the event was moved to the previous weekend, leaving this past weekend to juniors and masters rowers. And the surrounding hills had the look of newly shorn French poodles with little tufts of trees adorning the ridges as though that could disguise the newly clearcut slopes below. Nonetheless, the weekend was blessed by fabulous weather, and nearly every Vashon rower returned home with a medal and a sunburn. This year the Covered Bridge Regatta fell at the end of the spring break rowing camp for the juniors, so they were feeling the effects of a week of heavy workouts and were not peaking for these races. In addition, this regatta now attracts the strongest programs from California, Oregon and Washington, so the competition was of national quality. Nonetheless the juniors medaled in 22 of the 28 races they entered with three first-place, 13 second-place and six third-place results. In particular, the junior women had a strong weekend, medaling in 15 of the 16 races they entered. The junior women’s double of Kalie Heffernan and Kirsten Girard overtook powerful local rival Seattle Rowing Center to win by a little more than a second. In this regatta, there are no events for lightweight rowers, so Vashon enters its lightweights in the JV category. Shannon Lipe and KaiLi Scheer won their JV double race on Saturday, and then on Sunday, Lipe joined teammates Emily Milbrath, Maddie McEachern, Virginia Miller and coxswain Callie Andrews to take their JV four race. Other junior women’s boats that medaled were the novice 4, two varsity pairs, JV double, varsity eight, JV eight and varsity four (second places) and novice coxed quad, JV four, two varsity quads and a varsity

Indeed, while public talks on marijuana are new for many, cannabis has made a career for Russo, who has been studying the plant and its medicinal benefits for nearly 20 years. In 2002, a writer for the magazine Cannabis Culture called Russo a “pot pioneer.” “So what does that make me now,” Russo said, “an ancient pioneer?” Though he attended medical school in Massachusetts and spent much of his career as a physician in Montana, Russo first encountered medical marijuana in Seattle. While completing a residency at the veterans hospital in the 1980s, he met a man with an autoimmune disorder who added a bit of marijuana to his pipe tobacco to help combat muscle weakness. “He had cut his hospital visits down dramatically,” Russo said. “Everyone knew he was doing it.” When he began practicing as a neurologist in Missoula, Montana, Russo saw patients with a range of ailments, from migraines and other chronic pain to seizures, strokes and ADD. He now describes how he gradually began to question the powerful medications he prescribed. “It began to dawn on me that I was giving increasingly toxic drugs to patients who sometimes had less and less benefit,” he said. Russo began researching and prescribing herbal medicines, drawn by what he calls the idea that plants could produce equal, if not better, results for his patients and have

Lila Webber McKey Lila Webber McKey passed peacefully from us on 9 April. Born in New Jersey in 1936, she attended Russell Sage, then taught physical education at Oswego State Teachers’ College. There she met a young Coast Guard Officer named Tom who was completing his reserve training while attending law school in Michigan. They married in 1960 and headed West, enamored with a bustling Seattle they would never leave. A talented pianist and alto, Lila joined the Seattle Chorale where she sang beautifully for 28 years. She also enjoyed playing her ukulele and singing around beach fires on her beloved Sequim Bay surrounded by family and friends. An advocate of athletics for girls, she helped pioneer junior girls’ soccer in the Seattle area. A coach, Den Mother, Scout leader and family logistics director, she immersed herself in the joys and challenges of raising four children. She also earned her German Education degree at the U.W., and opened her home to serve as host family to a generation of foreign students finding their way at the U. She later opened her home through infant care to a generation of toddlers who adored her. She and Tom retired to Vashon in 1997 where she sang in the Island Chorale and enjoyed visits from the many whose lives she touched. Lila is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Tom, her brother Dr. John Webber in Fort Lauderdale, her four children, Tim, Chris, Heather and Brenda all in the Seattle area, and her ten grandchildren. A celebration of Lila’s life will be held on Saturday, 25 April at 11AM in the Mileta Creek Restaurant at the Vashon Golf and Swim Club. His recent research has been focused on better understanding the chemical components of marijuana as well as the endocannabinoid system. Discovered only 20 years ago, this body system regulates many physiological functions — such as metabolism, immune response and inflammation — and can be balanced with the use of cannabis. Russo believes better understanding the endocannabinoid system could help many patients get more targeted treatment for their ailments, but notes that it is barely touched on in medical school. The system was a focus of his talk last week at the north-end grange, which Russo said had a more “folksy atmosphere” than medical conferences. Many who attended were medical marijuana patients already familiar with Russo’s work, said Shango Los, the head of VIMEA, and many scribbled notes as he spoke. “They were coming because they had already learned all the stuff you can learn from regular people and on the internet, and they really wanted that specialty information,” Los said. “It looked like a graduate class.” One audience member asked whether Russo might campaign lawmakers in the U.S. for better laws around marijuana. But Russo made clear he’s not an activist, but a physician. Indeed, Russo talks of his frustration with those he says willfully ignore the benefits of medical marijuana. But he speaks just as passionately about the research needed to back cannabis as a medicine and to get the right products in the hands of patients. “There is still a lot of work that has to be done and people who need to be convinced,” he said. “I think this will go on a long time. … I have no interest in retiring.”

Buck is also survived by his sister, Tara Holtzclaw, of Enumclaw, his son Kyle Hendrix of Kirkland, and his fiance, Maria Rodriguez, of Miami, Florida.
