Mukai activists win in court, secure historic farmhouse Ruling ends legal battle, though other side could appeal By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer
The local activists seeking to take possession of the Mukai Farm and Garden won in court earlier this month, when a judge ruled that they legally control the historic property. “That’s the phrase we’ve been waiting for,” said Helen Meeker, a Friends of Mukai board member who said she was “euphoric” when she learned of the decision. King County Superior Court Judge Monica Benton ruled on April 2 that the group of islanders did legally orchestrate their 2012 takeover of Island Landmarks, the nonprofit that owns the Mukai property. The decision ends a two-year legal battle and leaves former Island Landmarks president and Texas resident Mary Matthews — who has been
highly criticized during her time at the helm of the nonprofit — no longer affiliated with the organization or the property. “It’s a big win,” said Friends of Mukai President Lynn Greiner, who is also an attorney for the group. Glenda Pearson, another board member, was pleased as well but struck a more cautious tone, as it is possible Matthews and other former board members named in the lawsuit could appeal the decision. “We’ve been kind of battered for years,” Pearson said. “I’m almost afraid to believe it.” Still, the Friends of Mukai say they are looking forward and already making plans for restoring and opening the property, where the Japanese-American Mukai family once kept a strawberry farm and traditional Japanese garden. Last week board members were working to get keys to the farmhouse and planning to meet with historic preservationists and government officials about their next steps. SEE MUKAI, 12

Everitt, who many islanders know from her board work with the Vashon Maury Island Heritage Association and her position at Vashon Allied Arts, is completing a master’s degree in nonprofit leadership at Seattle University. She returned to school, believing she would work in the arts world, but now, she said, she is happily immersed in her new position and the work and mission of VCC, which she summed up succinctly. “If you run out of money, we do not run out on you,” she said. “I can get behind that 100 percent.” Everitt spent her early childhood on Vashon and then

Food bank director steps down after 10 years at nonprofit Former food bank client was catalyst behind food bank farm, summer lunch program By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer
After 10 years at the helm of Vashon’s food bank, Yvonne Pitrof will step down as the organization’s executive director. Pitrof announced her resignation to the staff and board of the Vashon-Maury Community Food Bank last week. In an interview with The Beachcomber, she said that while she’s immensely proud of what the food bank has accomplished under her direction, she’s ready for something new. With a son who recently started college, she added, it’s a good time for a career change. “Personally it’s time for me to move on, a good time to move on and grow into other things,” she said. Pitrof became director of the food bank in 2004, after commuting for two years to a job at Northwest Harvest, a nonprofit food distributor based in Seattle. As a single mother, she was a client of Vashon’s food bank before being hired there. “For me, there was a certain amount of empowerment, getting over the ‘Oh, it’s my fault,’” Pitrof recalled. “We have a system where it’s really hard to get by as a single parent covering all the bills. I went through hard times, and that definitely fuels my passion for this work.” Over the past decade, Pitrof has seen

She also helped the nonprofit advance how it does business, from improving how it trains and works with volunteers to implementing systems to track the food that comes in and out. “We’ve grown and professionalized the organization tremendously so we can better speak to what we do, can better understand what we’re doing and strategize accordingly,” she said. Today, the organization hands out food to about 200 families a week, with help from about 200 volunteers each year.

“She’s been an integral part of the food bank’s success over the years,” said Susan Flores, president of the food bank’s board. “She’s put her heart and soul into it.” Both Flores and Pitrof called the food bank’s farm program, which provides locally grown produce to food bank clients, a highlight of Pitrof’s decade at the organization. The food bank started the farm program with a United Way grant in 2010. Since then, it has grown enough produce at food bank-run farms to help supply some off-island food banks as well, and it’s now working to open a new farm just outside town. “There’s so much potential with that,” Pitrof said. “It’s so centrally located and easy for volunteers to get to.” Pitrof said she is also proud to have started the food bank’s first summer lunch program last year. For some time, the food bank thought such a program was out of reach, as Vashon doesn’t have enough lowincome families to garner federal funding for summertime lunches for schoolchildren. However, it found local donors to fund the lunches and volunteers to serve them. “I thought we could raise the money to do it. That was a huge shift,” Pitrof said. The food bank decided to open the lunches to all children so that it wouldn’t be known as a program for low-income families. Educational activities are also provided, and parents are asked to donate if they can. Pitrof said the lunches have drawn families from across the socioeconomic spectrum. “We wanted it to just be a fun thing for kids to all come together. … We did

erase that stigma, which was completely our goal,” she said. Pitrof has also worked to address regional hunger issues as a board member of the South King County Food Coalition and the Washington Food Coalition. She is currently helping lobby lawmakers for state funding for food bank programs. “It’s been a part my role that I’ve really loved,” she said. “I’ve been quite passionate about doing that on a larger scale as far as working to make larger systemic differences.” Locally, Pitrof said she’s worked to increase awareness of the amount of need on the island and the wide variety of people the food bank serves. And as need has grown, she said, Vashon’s support of the food bank has kept up. “The community has really responded and has been really dedicated to making sure we’re taking care of our own, and that’s something you don’t always see quite as cohesively as happens here,” she said. Pitrof is now considering her next steps and said that while she’s passionate about nonprofit work, she’s also keeping her options open. She plans to continue living on Vashon and will leave her post within a month. “I definitely want to see the food bank move on to its own new chapter in a healthy way,” she said. Flores said Pitrof will be missed, but the board is already planning its search for a new director and will post the position soon. “We’ll watch her soar in her next steps,” Flores said.

New restaurant to open Vashon Highway targeted for anti-skid treatment Vashon will have a new restaurant in a familiar space when islander and chef Chris Lueck opens the Mediterranean-influenced Isola in the old Express Cuisine location. “This is going to be an entirely new concept,” Lueck said. “It will not be anything like what I did before.” Lueck put the space up for sale last year, when knee replacement surgery left him unable to continue running Express Cuisine. But while his effort to sell was unsuccessful, his recovery was just the opposite. “I’m fine now,” he said, “so it seemed like the per-
fect opportunity to reopen with a new concept.” Stretching from Spain to Turkey, and Croatia to North Africa — with everything from southern France to Greece in between — Mediterranean cuisine presents a wide variety of culinary opportunities. And while more details will be available as progress is made toward opening, Lueck is very clear that Isola — which is Italian for “island” — will be the embodiment of who he is as a chef. “This time, I’m going to be doing what I want to do.” — Sarah Low
King County plans to apply an innovative antiskid road treatment at twodozen locations throughout the county, and a section of Vashon Highway is included on the list. The project is part of a countywide effort to improve safety and reduce the number of vehicle-offthe-road accidents. According to Jeff Switzer, spokesman for the county’s Department of Transportation, a roughly 450-foot section of Vashon Highway north of Quartermaster Drive is slated to receive high-friction surface treatment (HFST). The treatment involves plac-
ing a thin layer of specially engineered, high-friction aggregates on the road surface to improve pavement friction and increase skid resistance. It it used most frequently on curves. The locations chosen by the county were determined by the frequency of accidents that involved vehicles leaving the road. The Vashon Highway location recorded a total of 19 accidents between 2005 and 2014, 15 of which involved vehicles going off of the road. The Federal Highway Administration has reported a significant decrease in accident occurrences in areas where HFST has been-
installed. As of last year, a 74 percent reduction in accidents was verified across 30 locations in various states. “It helps drivers stay on the road in places where speed and heavy braking has otherwise worn the surface down,” Switzer said. “It’s helpful and needed.” He added that HFST should not pose a problem

Don’t feel guilty for skipping the market
Win in Mukai case saves an important Vashon place
Islanders can support local agriculture in many ways
A recent court ruling puts a group of islanders in charge of the historic Mukai farmhouse. Their long-sought legal victory is also a win for Vashon, a chance for us to take back this sadly neglected piece of local history. The Mukai farmhouse is one of the most intact historic sites on Vashon. It’s the place where the Mukais, a JapaneseAmerican family, once ran a successful strawberry growing and packing business. Many have called their home just outside town a unique marrying of two cultures — an American-style farmhouse set off by a traditional Japanese garden. The property speaks to the island’s agricultural and cultural heritage, as well as some history we’re not proud of. In 1942, the Mukais fled the island to avoid internment. Michael Sullivan, a well-respected historian, said today the site makes up the most intact Japanese-American-owned complex in the state, with a house, garden and fruit barrelling plant all still standing. Mary Matthews saw the significance of this site years ago and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for her nonprofit, Island Landmarks, to purchase it. Since then, however, she has been unable to fulfill her vision for restoring the place and it’s fallen into a sorry state of disrepair. She and her husband may have had good intentions but have lived out of state, rarely visiting the site, opening it to the public or doing work there. Matthews herself admitted the Mukai property was more than she could handle alone, but was unwilling to loosen her grip on it short of a court order to do so. Now the Friends of Mukai, a group of well-respected Vashon residents, are able to move forward on plans they’ve been developing to restore the house and garden and open them to visitors. With government agencies and nonprofits already committed to helping, and Sullivan’s company poised to create expert restoration plan, this group is far better prepared to steward this important site. One day, the place could look much as it did in its heyday, when hundreds of people came to work in the strawberry fields that stretched for acres behind it. It could be open for the public to come learn about this time in our island’s and our country’s past. And it will be because of the work of a few islanders who were tirelessly committed to saving the property, even when it meant dragging the issue through court. On Monday, Sullivan told The Beachcomber he would say “attaboy” to those Vashon activists who didn’t give up. We would echo his sentiment and add a thank you to other supporters, government officials and historians who also called for change and supported the Friends of Mukai. We hope to one day visit the site after those who helped save it realize its full potential.
If I had a nickel for every time I saw a Vashon local avoid the uptown scene on a Saturday morning, I’d have the cash to personally buy and clean up the K2 site. I’m using hyperbole to get your attention, but you get the point. Whether it’s an aversion to traffic, pedestrians, crowds or tourists, it’s a common refrain among those who are proud to be islanders. Much of that Saturday hubbub, of course, is centered around the Village Green, home of the Vashon Farmers Market. For full disclosure, I’m on the board of the Vashon Island Growers Association (VIGA), the parent organization of the farmers market, but I have no intention of persuading every local to shop there on a weekly basis. The fact is, the scene’s not for everyone, and that’s OK. Much of the aforementioned aversion is tied to aspects of the market that many locals find unappealing. Lots of islanders live here because it’s an intimate community, offering proximity to cities as well as relative isolation, whereas the farmers market brings a boisterous crowd made up of lots of off-island shoppers. A lack of enthusiasm for the Saturday farmers market, however, does not translate to a lack of support for local agriculture. The purpose of the farmers market is to provide a platform for direct-to-consumer sales; to cut out the middle man, in other words. Alternatives are to shop at farm stands that are stocked and managed by farmers themselves or sign up for a local CSA (commu-
FOOD & FARMS By EMILY SCOTT nity-supported agriculture) program to provide farmers with working capital in exchange for fresh produce throughout the season. One might find a neighbor who keeps chickens (because we’ve all got at least one) and buy eggs from him or her. Another option is to shop for produce, meat, cheese, baked goods and more at the summertime Wednesday Market. The Wednesday Market is a fairly new offering designed for people passing through town on their way home to make dinner. Supporting local agriculture at the direct-to-consumer level not only strengthens interpersonal connections in our community, it makes possible the opportunity for sales directly to retail, restaurants or institutions. In Vashon’s current agricultural economy, it’s extremely difficult for farmers to grow to the scale that would allow them to make a profit at wholesale prices. At the same time, local restaurants and institutions (like the school district, senior center, Vashon Community Care, local grocery stores, etc.) can’t afford to pay retail prices for the quantities they need. By supporting local agriculture at the direct-to-consumer level, we can provide the incentive and the revenue small farmers need to expand their operations, allowing them to sell retail and wholesale. It is possible for an individual to do all this on his or her own, but there’s strength in numbers. By becoming a member of VIGA,

you can be part of an organization that is working on a broader scale to promote farming, healthy food and a sustainable agricultural economy on Vashon. VIGA members enjoy perks like access to a Google group dedicated to buying, selling, trading and sharing information about all things agriculture, the opportunity to participate in group orders of seeds and supplies with significant cost reductions and the latest information about educational opportunities and special events. VIGA members also feel good knowing that our Food Access Partnership gets fresh produce in the hands of folks that may otherwise not be able to afford it by matching EBT dollars at the market and farm stands and providing vouchers to local institutions, like the senior center and care center. More importantly, VIGA members take pride in preserving Vashon’s character. Like Dan Carlson mentioned in the last article of this series, “agriculture ensures a country landscape that defines Vashon’s quality of life.” However, just as much as the pastoral life is built into Vashon’s personal image, so are aversion to authority and corporations, selfreliance, self determination and independence. Supporting local agriculture cuts out the middle man, lowers your carbon footprint, reduces Vashon’s reliance on off-island shipping companies and increases the likelihood that your kids will be able to eat fresh, nutritious food, not only at home, but at school as well. Supporting local agriculture gives locals the chance to keep Vashon genuine for those who know and love it most.

of the three positions is May 15. We need strong, thoughtful, civic-minded people to step forward and run. Without that, all this hand-wringing over the levy will be for naught. The park district’s director, Elaine Ott, has done an excellent job taking an agency that was in sorry shape and turning it into a place that again boasts a spirit of professionalism. She’s a smart, considerate executive, and we’re lucky to have her at the helm. But governance continues to be a significant problem at the park district. In recent years, park board meetings have been marked by strife, tension and, at times, incivility. And despite Elaine’s leadership, our park district continues to ail. We urge islanders who care about the future of our park district to work with us in finding well-intentioned, civicminded people to serve on the board. A strong executive director and an adequate levy are not enough. For our park district to once again thrive, to work with islanders to set priorities that serve the wider community, we need a new set of commissioners who will provide vision, direction and vigilant oversight to this important public resource.

Beachcomber (“Act has not worked well for all”). I, too, am a Washington state enrollee and am grateful for the attempt by the U.S. government to address the problems of our health care system. I, too, found it easy to sign up and was awarded an income-based subsidy that was within my ability to pay, though on the high side. My premium was about the same as I had paid the previous year for a private plan. But then I saw the cost was going to rise considerably for 2015 and, the worst shock, I underestimated our income for 2014 so must pay back some of the subsidy: several hundred dollars we don’t have. I am used to getting money back from the Earned Income Credit. This money has helped my family immensely over the years to pay for dentists, eye doctors, glasses, other health care not covered by insurance, car repairs, computers (used) and sometimes even a camping

Soccer club urges a yes vote The board of the Vashon Island Soccer Club encourages island voters to vote yes this month to renew the Vashon Park District levy for the next four years. This levy is the primary funding mechanism for supporting and maintaining our much-loved parks, facilities and related programs. Without the levy, valuable programs like youth soccer may no longer be available to the community in 2016 and beyond. We support the levy because we believe in the positive role of youth sports that depend on the parks and because of the broad array of park district resources and activities that are essential for a vibrant and healthy community. We appreciate that the district has had challenges and respect the contributions from many different voices. The parks board members themselves represent a spectrum of perspectives, but they all agree that continuing this levy is essential. The soccer club will continue our long partnership and strong commitment to growing a robust and sustainable park district with many benefits for all. vacation to visit family. It has also been enough to pay my self-employment taxes for over 10 years. A complaint I have that was not mentioned is that the premiums are just too high (even with the subsidy) for lower-income working or fixed-income people who don’t qualify for Medicaid. I don’t fault the government for this; I fault the insurance companies. Rates went up after the ACA passed, such that subsidies were necessary to keep the cost the same. This year the premiums have increased again. Perhaps there should be some regulation of premiums. I don’t have more of an answer, but there never will be one if those in power who benefit are allowed free reign to exploit those who need, and are now required to use, their services. — Laurel Boyajian

Each spring, the French repeat the rat race of competitive cycling Sometimes getting a newspaper out every week can be a hard-nosed business. Take for instance this article. It was supposed to hit the streets last week because of its time-sensitive subject matter, but it got bumped. I laid out a logical argument to my editor that included breath holding and foot stomping, but all it got me was a woozy head and a sore foot. You see, it had been a while since I let my inner bicycle nerd loose, so I wanted to tell you about two momentous cycling events that began a very long time ago. The first is the Paris-Roubaix race (pronounced Paree Roobay rayse). When most American’s think of a bicycle race, the first and usually only thing that comes to mind is the Tour de France. The Tour is a wonderful but complicated event that takes 21 individual races in 23 days to crown a winner. To the uninitiated, it is a bit daunting to understand. A much easier race to follow is the Paris-Roubaix. It is considered one of cycling’s classics because it is a very old (first run in 1896) and very prestigious one-day race. Depending on who you talk to it is nicknamed either Queen of the Classics or Hell of the North.
HUMOR By CHRIS AUSTIN What makes this race unique is that about 40 percent of it is ridden over cobblestones or, as the Dutch call them, kinderkopjes — children’s heads. Some of the roads are so old they were laid by invading Romans. As a consequence, racing on a 2,000-year-old road can be dicey, especially when it rains, and it always rains. This is one of the most crash-prone races, not only because of the slick cobbles, but because the constant vibration makes balancing a challenge, especially with numb hands. So it is not unusual to see rider after rider go cartwheeling off the road and explode into flames. Maybe that last part was an exaggeration. The race ends with mud-caked riders flying around a velodrome (a banked, oval track for bicycles) to determine the winner in front of a

DOCK. DOCK. WHO’S THERE…?

When is a real estate crash good? When it happens somewhere else. And as luck would have it Dockton was the benefactor of someone else’s woes. The year was 1892 and a 352-foot-long, 106-foot wide dry dock was just being completed in Port Townsend. When local real estate prices tumbled the dock was sold and the structure, nearly the size of a football field, was towed to Dockton. But it wasn’t called Dockton then. The Puget Sound Dry Dock Company, owner of the behemoth, actually named the area. Originally workers commuted to the island by steamship but accommodations were built to house the employees. Dockton soon had two hotels and the upscale houses of “Piano Row” which were owned by the management elite. Pianos were the high-end entertainment system of the day and reserved for the well-heeled. If those houses were built today “Piano Row” would be known as “HDTV surround sound premium cable package Row.” The dock itself was a going concern until 1908 when it was sold yet again and moved to the Duwamish River. While operations lasted Dockton could boast it had the largest dry dock west of the Mississippi. Given how many oceans there are between here and the Mississippi I guess that’s not too surprising. Shipbuilding and repair continued in Dockton however until 1929 with the Stucky and Martinolich shipyards. During the years that Dockton was a maritime concern it worked on a variety of ships. One of the first was the Wetmore, a whaleback steamer. Built in Wisconsin, the Wetmore was sailed all the way around South America to get here - somebody really, really wanted a whaleback steamer. Also the British warship with the fearsome name Hyacinth (I guess Pansy was already taken) hove to for repairs. Not everything was smooth sailing though. Around 1913 the 72-ft, gasoline-powered, Florence J. was launched and promptly capsized. Little wonder Florence didn’t use her last name. The very last commercial ship to be built in Dockton was the Janet G. in 1929. With the depression of the 1930s grinding away at the nation, there was still work to be had at the dock but when the Martinolich sons retired, shipyard operations were mothballed thereby bringing a close to an era. Many reminders remain including the houses of Piano Row and pilings from the dock itself. delirious crowd. Even though this is a simple point A to point B race, it can still be hard to understand a rider’s tactics considering how a modern race works. In the beginning, cycling teams would simply hire several fast cyclists and hope one of them came in first. They were basically opponents wearing the same jersey. Team Peugeot is credited as the first to come up with the philosophy that a bicycle race is contested by teams but won by an individual. Basically in the run-up to the racing season, Peugeot chose the toughest, fastest man as the captain and it was the task of the rest of the team to assure his victory. It is not all bad for the domestiques, as the French call them. Not only are they paid to help their leader, but they share in the spoils if he wins. How do they accomplish this? The most important thing they do is ride in front of the captain and block the wind. When someone rides in the slipstream, they use about 30 percent less energy than the man in front. The team will take turns at the front so the captain stays in the best aerodynamic position. Teammates will also get food and water, help him steer clear of crashes and keep an eye on key opponents. If everything works out, by the end of the race each team’s strongest rider will be as fresh as possible for the final push. When the Peugeot team first tried this,
it choose Georges Passerieu as captain. He was an extremely strong rider who could maintain a high speed for a long time, but he was a very poor sprinter. That meant if anyone was close to him at the finish line, he would probably lose. The plan of giving him a large lead by the end of the race worked perfectly. Each teammate worked to exhaustion and fell away as George pedaled with relative ease. It almost came to naught, however, because as he was making his way to the velodrome with thousands of screaming fans lining the route, a French policeman stepped out of the crowd and demanded that he show he had paid his bicycle tax. It is like leading in the last lap of the Indianapolis 500 and getting pulled over to show your licence and registration. As Inspector Clouseau’s grandfather argued with Georges, his competitors were racing through the town. Finally he relented, and Georges passed the finish line just ahead of his opponents. So I urge you to set your DVRs for 51 weeks in the future and catch the 2016 version of this racing spectacle. Oh and what was the other momentous cycling event that began a long time ago? Rejecting critics’ attempts to read sexual meaning into her floral paintings, 20th century American artist O’Keeffe painted enormous flowers that blurred the line between abstraction and representation. In 2014, O’Keeffe’s 1932 painting “Jimson Weed/ White Flower No. 1” sold for $44,405,000, more than three times the previous world auction record for any female artist.
Last year, Vashon’s poet laureate Ina Whitlock established a twice yearly poetry reading to celebrate island poets in an informal setting. The second annual event of “As We Like It, Let’s Read Poetry” will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Vashon Bookshop. This year, poets can read work from a beloved poet or a favorite translation as well as a their own original poetry. There is a two-page limit. Rock Orchestra jumps back across the pond Seattle Rock Orchestra (SRO) caught the attention of island audiences when they crossed the pond for their Vashon debut last summer. This time, island audiences will hear the unique repertoire of SRO’s chamber ensemble, Seattle Rock Orchestra Quintet (SROQ) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Blue Heron. SROQ offers a more intimate experience with edgier programming than its larger counterpart. SROQ will perform songs by Beck, Bjork, Radiohead and more. The island’s own i Solisti di Vashon, led by musical director Gaye Detzer, will open for SROQ. I Solisti di Vashon includes Hugh Davis, Ana de Guzman, Charlotte Schoen, Max Moore, Julia Wright (violin), Ethan Sedgemore (viola) and Camille de Guzman (cello). Band brings acoustic harmonies to the Bike The Washover Fans, a Seattle band that’s been hailed by the city’s vibrant independent music scene, will bring its soulful acoustic harmonies and lyrics to the Red Bike at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. “We think the judge made a really good decision to put this in the hands of board members who are islanders,” said Christie True, director of the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks. “It’s really important that these historic properties are well protected.” Last year the county offered to purchase the Mukai property as part of a settlement in the lawsuit. However, the agency couldn’t reach a deal that Matthews would agree to. Now, both the Friends of Mukai and True say they’ll consider whether the property should ultimately be transferred to King County, which manages a short list of historic sites around the region. “We’re still open to potentially being the property owner,” True said. “We’re open to that conversation.” The dispute over the Mukai property began in 2012, when a group of islanders concerned that Matthews and her small board of largely out-of-state residents were letting the historic site fall into disrepair quietly became members of the nonprofit. They then called a special meeting where they elected a new board and president, ousting the former officers. When Matthews then refused to give up control of the nonprofit, the Vashon group sued. Benton, the superior court judge, originally ruled in favor of the original board, saying that according to Island Landmarks’ bylaws the islanders did not properly give notice of their meeting. However, after the Vashon group appealed that decision, a three-judge Court of Appeals panel ruled that their meeting was in fact valid. But the panel said other facts in the case were not clear — such as

However, because the group now has the farmhouse and because the barrelling plant’s owner has not given them permission to go inside, Artifacts will focus its efforts on planning restoration for the farmhouse. Sullivan recently visited the site and said he was dismayed to find that a door to the house was standing open. Inside the house, he said he found empty beer bottles and spoiled food in an unplugged refrigerator. “It just looked like there were signs that there wasn’t anybody watching out for it,” he said. Sullivan, who outlined his concerns in a declaration presented to the judge, said he’s most worried about the home’s roof, which has long needed repair and which he says has been improperly covered with plastic sheeting. “The quickest way for a building to deteriorate is for a roof to go bad,” he said. Greiner said the Friends of Mukai hope to quickly do work on the roof, which they have grant funding for. Also high on their list is taking down a plastic deer fence that has surrounded the property in recent years and holding an event for supporters and Vashon residents. “We’re hoping to get the public there soon,” she said. While Matthews and her board could appeal the decision, lawyers for the Friends of Mukai say that because issues of fact have been cleared up, the case likely wouldn’t go far in appeal. As of Monday, the Friends of Mukai had not yet gotten keys to the house. “We’re hopeful everyone will do the reasonable thing here and transfer the property … so repairs can be started and everyone can move forward,” Brenner said.

Soccer team ends losing streak with shutout against Coupeville
Pirate runners, jumpers stand out against larger schools Girls team continues to take top spots at meets By CARRIE VAN BUREN For The Beachcomber
The Pirate track and field team participated in two large invitational meets over the past two weekends. The events gave both newcomers and seasoned participants the opportunity to compete against a host of larger high school teams, while shining the spotlight on several girls’ teammembers. At the Lil’ Norway Invitational event in Poulsbo on April 4, the Pirates rallied to bring 18 top-10 finishers in a field of 15 high schools. The day was punctuated by the girls’ team scoring a notable 50 points and placing fourth overall behind other dominant 2A and 3A teams. The highlight for the day came on the heels of both girls’ and boys’ sprint medley relays (SMR), as the Pirates finished in second and fourth places, respectively. The SMR offers a potpourri of sprint distances for the four runners to complete in a sequence of 100, 100, 200 then 400 meters. Girls’ team members Annika Hille, Emily Browne, Annie Muller and Lauren Jenks, as well as boys’ team members Kellan Riley, Gerry Gerrior, Nate Lawson and Jason Kruly, cruised to a spot on the podium and a place in the Vashon High School record books as both teams set new school records in the event. Finish times were 2:06.63 for the girls and 1:46.09 for the boys. More notable track performances came with Hille grabbing a coveted second place in the girls’ 200 meters and fifth place in the 100 meters. Teammate Eva Anderson took sixth place in the mile with a personal record (PR) of 5:53.37, as well as a seventhplace finish in the 800 meters. Sibling racers
Aria and Selena Mildon both earned PRs in a tight 3200 meters competition, with Aria taking fourth place in 13:36.12 and Selena finishing seventh with 13:41.65. On the boys’ side, freshman Hunter Justis garnered a 16th-place finish in his first time ever running the 400 meters, as well as eighth place in the 1,600-meter event — his first opportunity to compete in a meet this season after an injury. In the field events, Emily Browne bounded to a third-place spot in the girls’ triple jump with a jump of 31 feet, 6.25 inches. Leapers Muller and Jenks wrapped up the third- and fourth-place spots in the girls’ long jump competition with jumps of 14 feet, 5 inches, and 13 feet, 11.5 inches respectively. Sophomore jumper Kellan Riley must have eaten his Wheaties that morning as he improved on his best gain in the boys’ triple jump four times over with a jump of 34 feet, 6.75 inches for a ninth-place finish. His teammates Nate Lawson and Julian Cross had big PRs in the javelin throw as well, with Lawson taking fifth place overall on a throw of 132 feet, 9 inches, and Cross besting his own prior best throw by more than 20 feet. Last Saturday, three Pirate girls’ teammembers accepted invitations to compete in three events during a wet and wild Tacoma Invitational event held at Lincoln High School. Thirty five teams, primarily 3A and 4A, crowded the infield for a long day of competition amid rain squalls alternating with sun breaks. Though the sand in the pit was hardpacked from the soaking, Kat Andrus showed her stuff once again on the girls’ triple jump runway with a stellar first-place finish jump of 35 feet, 7.5 inches. Senior Emily Browne, who just this season incorporated the triple jump into her track and field arsenal, took 12th place with a jump of

Later, Hille returned to the podium with an eighth-place finish in the long jump. VHS track and field will have its next opportunity to compete against other Nisqually League opponents tomorrow in a meet at Charles Wright at 3:30 p.m.
Vashon’s varsity boys soccer players came away with their second win of the season on Saturday against Coupeville High School. The long, winless drought that Vashon had been experiencing was quickly washed away by a rain of goals, as the Pirates won the match 10-0. From defenders to strikers, most Pirate players had a shot on target. Notable goals were two scored off headers from corner kick set pieces. The first one, which opened up the scoring for the Pirates, came off the head of central defender Luis Castellon. Noteworthy goals were also made by Bohdin Mozeleski and Sam Foucault, who both put in a great twogoal game effort. The Vashon defense is to be credited with solid defending, good communication and clearing the ball out of the back with intent. Passing and connecting between players was precise as the Pirates controlled the game very well. Movement on and off the ball was done fluidly and at times it appeared that the Pirates were dancing around the Wolves. The Pirates hope to carry this momentum as they head into Nisqually League games. Their next match is this Friday, a home game against Bellevue Christian scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Spring rains make way for Pirate baseball to hit the field “It’s been a fun start in spite of all the rain. We’re happy, but nowhere near satisfied with our play. This week’s schedule of mainly non-league games and with Seattle Christian mixed in will be a real test. This Wednesday’s contest will be huge, and we hope everyone can come out for the game.� The week of spring break the Pirates will play four games. On Monday, April 13, Vashon traveled to top-ranked 2A North Kitsap High School, with results after press time. On Wednesday, April 15, the team will play at home against Seattle Christian at 4 p.m. It is a league match-up with serious post-season ramifications. On Friday, April 17, the Pirates will host Sequim High School in a 3 p.m. start, and on Saturday, April 18, will host University Prep at noon at the high school field.

The Vashon High School baseball team finally got a full week of ball in, playing four games in five days, winning three and losing one. The team’s overall season record stands at 6-1 going into the week of spring break. On Monday, April 6, the team traveled to Eatonville and beat the Cruisers in an odd, error-filled, see-saw game by a score of 12-7. Sophomore Ashton Dulfer got the start, pitching three strong innings. Junior Sam Schoenberg, in his first action of the year from the mound, picked up the win. Freshman Levi Myer made his pitching debut, closing out the final two innings. Offensive highlights included Josh Hruska Myer and Dulfer, with three RBIs each. On Wednesday, April 8, the Pirates played the first of three against the Tarriers at Charles Wright in Tacoma. With their defensive play cleaned up, the Pirates won 11-1. On Friday, April 10, Vashon hosted the Tarriers in a five-inning double header at Jim Martin Field. The Pirates ended up with a split, taking the opener 9-3 and dropping game two in a tight 6-5 affair. Left-hander Logan Hawkins got the win in Wednesday’s game against Charles Wright, putting in another dominating performance with just one earned run off of five hits, three walks and seven strikeouts in six innings of work. There was solid offense up and down the lineup with centerfielder Simon Perrin contributing three RBIs. Game one of the double header featured Josh Hruska Myer on the mound. It was another solid outing for the senior, who gave up three runs on six hits and recorded three strikeouts. Hawkins led the offensive attack with three hits and three RBIs. Myer had four RBIs on two hits. Dulfer took the bump for game two, and after some early inning struggles, settled down and held the Tarriers to six

left for 40 years before returning from Los Angeles in 2007 with her husband and two children. She owned her own production company there for 15 years — work that is serving her well now, she noted. “I love the development world,” she said. “It reminds me very much of producing. I spent a lifetime asking people for funds. I have no problem asking people for money.” Now, she and the foundation’s 12-member board are doing just that. It is a task that is essential at VCC, they say, in part because of its commitment to caring for residents who no longer have the ability to pay for their care. When someone enters a nursing home, unless they have long-term care insurance, they are expected to pay the full cost of care. When their funds are depleted, Medicaid will kick in, but it covers only a portion of the cost. Currently, Medicaid pays 70 percent of the cost in VCC’s skilled nursing facility and 49 percent in assisted living, according to Truman O’Brien, the president of the foundation. VCC serves 30 residents in its skilled nursing facility, and about two-thirds of those are covered by

Medicaid, said Judy Beggs, the director of operations. Because of that Medicaid gap, O’Brien said there is a projected shortfall of more than $1.1 million this year, a number that keeps increasing as costs rise and reimbursement rates do not keep up. In 2013, the Medicaid gap was about $1.03 million, some $100,000 less than it is now. VCC has worked hard to create a stable financial picture, O’Brien said, and through careful budgeting and income from the adult day health program and its rehabilitation services, it will make up for all but $400,000 of the needed funds. With the cost of foundation staff added, that figure is $500,000. Now, O’Brien noted, the foundation is on track to raise three different types of funds: a sustaining fund dedicated to operations, a legacy fund to keep liquid to tap in case of catastrophe and an endowment fund. Last year, he said, the foundation raised $406,000, with $306,000 going to operations and $100,000 earmarked for the legacy and endowment funds. As part of their fundraising effort, the foundation board and Everitt are encouraging people to donate monthly to the sustaining fund. The foundation began this initiative last year, but both Everitt and

fall short of and is based on staffing levels, performance on a variety of quality measures and the results of annual inspections by state and federal employees. When making his fundraising pitch, O’Brien notes the demographics of the island, which has a larger population of seniors and soon-to-be seniors than other parts of King County. According to the 2010 census, 42 percent of islanders were between 45 and 64, compared to 27 percent in King County, and 18 percent of islanders were 65 and older, compared to 11 percent countywide. Some of those who work with seniors on the island say that precisely because of those demographics, Vashon will have to become a leader in the region in how to care for an aging population. Everitt and O’Brien say that the work of VCC is essential to that and are working toward a time when annual campaigns to cover the shortfall will not be needed. Their goal is to grow the endowment fund so it alone will cover the annual shortfall; $6 to $7 million will be needed to achieve that goal, O’Brien said. Until that time, though, they will be looking for islanders to support the care of island elders at VCC. “These are our friends and neighbors,” Everitt said.

O’Brien say it has been slow to catch on with potential donors. If 600 people gave as little as $20 a month, they say, that would create a much more solid base for VCC. “We want that $20 a month,” O’Brien said. “A couple hundred of those, and it adds up.” They are a long way from their goal, they acknowledge, but do have several donors, some that give $5 a month, others at $100, $200 and $300. Beyond that effort, they say they are able to accept property and investments and will apply for more grants and continue to seek major donors and host a variety of events. O’Brien became involved with VCC when his mother lived the last eight years of her life there; she died in 2009. He first served on the VCC board, including five years as president, and he spearheaded the creation of the foundation. To him, the path is clear. “We can give lousy care or we can shut the doors,” he said. “And I am not going to do either one of those things. We are going to give quality care and keep the doors open.” He noted the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services awarded five stars to VCC as part of its routine rating program of the nation’s nursing homes. Lewis, who denies grimacing, says she has encouraged the group to take action. “I have known for years it was a problem, but there was not an easy solution,” she said.

The groundwater committee and crew club connected through masters rower Deb Jackson, who is married to Frank Jackson. Despite the all the combined forces working on the issue, addressing the problem proved challenging. The kit’s square basin for collecting the water did not fit in the round storm drain, Lewis said, and the location of the drain itself poses a challenge, as it is near the front of the businesses. Once it is opened, it is an open pit that must be blocked off. “You cannot have an open pit with cars going by and kids around,” she said. Additionally, the traditional car wash location in the parking lot means that water has to travel uphill to drain. On Sunday, a large hose was laid across the lot to direct the water, and volunteers were sweeping it uphill to be pumped out and delivered to a nearby berm. The solution was not optimal, Call noted, but those involved considered the first day a pilot to see how well their plan would work. As Call watched some parents take turns with the brooms, he said that several people involved believe that a more practical and effective approach might be to install a French drain that would catch water and divert it to a berm. It could be done fairly inexpensively, he said, but he cautioned that was just one idea. “We have not talked to Shawn about digging up his parking lot yet,” he added. Either way, he said, the crew team is committed to continuing the fish-friendly car washes, noting that working on the project has made the stakes clear to him. “When you look into the storm drain, you are looking into Shinglemill Creek,” he said. Shinglemill, Vashon’s second largest creek, has a fork that starts just west of the fire station on Bank Road and is often filled mostly with runoff, Jackson said. The committee plans to to address larger issues of runoff from town, he added, but he stressed the importance of solving the car wash problem. “Shall we continue to pollute, or is the way we can do it better?” he said. “Well, when you think you can do better, and you work on it, you can do better.”

Born 2003, Danny Boy came to VIPP when his beloved owners moved to assisted living and could not take them along. Danny Boy is extremely sweet and laid back.
