Newspaper printed on rolling paper By MEGAN HANSEN Staff reporter

Old newspapers aren’t just for packing and lining bird cages anymore. The Whidbey News-Times announced this week a new partnership, bringing new use to the 125-year-old print product. Starting April 1, the Whidbey News-Times will be printed on new material provided by Zig Zag, the popular maker of smokable rolling papers, allowing readers to read up and then toke up. “We’re always looking for new innovative ideas for our products,” said Executive Editor and Publisher Keven Graves. “There will be no additional charge for the new, high value,” he added. With the legalization of recreational marijuana in Washington state, partnering

with a Washington newspaper seemed like the perfect opportunity for creating a dual-use product, a Zig Zag spokesperson said. Modifying the two paper products into one wasn’t as simple as one might think. Prior to its launch, the new paper product was tested for durability and burning qualities. The companies also had to test and redevelop the ink used to ensure safe inhalation when burned. “We were already halfway there since we already used a natural soy-based ink,” Graves said. “A little tweaking and Zig Zag was able to produce just what we needed.” The changes won’t affect Oak Harbor’s non-smoking citizens and the paper is still recyclable.

NASCAR race track coming to Whidbey ‘Beast Mode’ to transition to race-car driver By JIM WALLER Sports editor

Paul Allen’s billions may lead to millions for Whidbey Island. Allen, owner of the Seattle Seahawks, has decided to build a NASCAR track on Whidbey Island. Trey Dinpahndt, associate director of operations for NASCAR, confirmed the report. “We have been trying to get a track in the Northwest for decades,” Dinpahndt said. “It is the one part of the country without one, and it will enable us to expand our brand and exploitation.” Mike Rashauft, spokesman for Allen’s Vulcan Inc., also confirmed the report. “Mr. Allen is a huge

NASCAR fan,” Rashauft said. “He has a retreat on Whidbey Island and enjoys the friendships he has developed there. The track is a way to thank the citizens of Whidbey Island for their hospitality and to share his passion for NASCAR.” Allen has committed $2.5 billion to build the track, which will be a state-of-theart, multi-use facility. So the track won’t sit idle for lost stretches of time between races, it will be designed to host non-racing events such as circuses, rodeos and other sporting events, including football, soccer and baseball games. In fact, Rashauft said, Allen has received permission from the NFL for the Seahawks to play one game a season at the track, which will seat over 100,000 fans. In one of the biggest organized crime busts since Prohibition, Oak Harbor’s shadowy Dutch Mafia was taken down in a hail of old Kleenex and stale coffee Monday night. A task force made up of Oak Harbor police, Island County Sheriff’s deputies and disgruntled Irishmen brought down the hammer after years of undercover investigation in the city’s seedy tulip district. “It will not be swept into a wooden shoe this time,” Sheriff Mark

The officers infiltrated the Hollandbased syndicate’s coffee klatch beneath the City Beach Park windmill and discovered a room filled with grown men and women decked out in old-timey Dutch costumes, sharing oliebollen and funny stories about old friends. Several of the octogenarians made a break for it, but didn’t get far before their Klompen cracked open. Vanderbrown said the investigation was hampered by the fact that even expert linguists couldn’t decipher the suspects’ thick accents or figure out

Commissioner switches parties, at long last By JANIS REID Staff reporter

Well-known “rino” Commissioner Jill Johnson has finally switched parties and become a Democrat. While some were surprised by the move, others said the change was long in coming. “Duh,” said Jason McFadyen, president of the Oak Harbor Chamber of

Commerce and an infamous Democrat. The term “rino” — or Republican In Name Only — describes “politicians who claim to be Republican but are in fact liberal or puppets of the liberal media,” according to Conservapedia.com. Johnson has been labeled as such by some area Republicans, apparently not without foundation.

However, Johnson’s aisle-crossing politics are not unusual in Western Washington where fiscal conservatives can also support gay marriage, anti-immigration activists support environmental protections and gun-toting nationalists have secret crushes on Rachel Maddow. SEE JILL, A19

‘Fighting Kraken’ adopted as mascot By RODNEY BERRY Staff reporter

The controversy and buzz created by Oak Harbor’s newest piece of public artwork took an unexpected turn last week when the Oak Harbor Public Schools formally embraced the “Fighting Kraken” as its new high school mascot. Troubled with the former Wildcats nickname’s lack of a local connection to Whidbey Island, the high school student body pushed for a mascot change and presented the idea of the Fighting Kraken to the school board after the metaland-copper sculpture was installed in Oak Harbor last month. The artwork depicts the sort of giant Pacific Octopus that lurks in Puget Sound waters, only this one is swallowing a Nautilus submarine inspired by the Jules Verne classic, “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.” Students from Oak Harbor and beyond have flocked to the sea creature to take selfies, setting in motion the idea of a new high school mascot more suitable to a marine and nautical environment. “There are no wildcats on Whidbey Island,” said Steve Van den Vooglespacker, student body president. “But local fishermen have long recounted tales of the Giant Pacific Octopus underneath the Deception Pass Bridge.” The school board approved the landmark motion last week, initiating immediate changes such as

renaming the school’s television station to “Kraken TV,” and switching the name of the high school’s award-winning culinary arts program to “Kraken Katering.” To beef up the image, “Fighting” was added to the nickname, but there were still some concerns from some administrators and others, including high school football coach Clay Werner. “Don’t octopuses suck?” Werner said. “Yes!” Van den Vooglespacker interjected. “But they also can squeeze the life out of you!” Werner smiled. He could see the headlines now: “Kraken crush the competition.” “Don’t tangle with the Kraken.” “Kraken wrap up another league title.” Some Oak Harbor residents think the school district is simply kraken up. “We don’t need a Fighting Kraken,” said Gilroy O’Strudle, who lives on Ireland Street. A plumber by trade, O’Strudle inadvertently revealed why the nickname might lack merit when he stooped to pick up a “Say no to Kraken” sign he brought to protest last week’s school board meeting. A painful period of five, maybe six seconds transpired before Superintendent Lance Gibbon had seen enough and asked the board to reconsider.

While rumors have swirled nationwide for years, it has been confirmed that Elvis Presley lives in Coupeville. Previously thought to have died from a drug overdose in his Graceland home in Memphis, the King of Rock and Roll is, indeed, alive and well. Presley currently makes his residence in a small submarine under the Coupeville Wharf, according to multiple sources. “I’ve seen him popping up and looking for orcas,” said Larry Vail, owner of Vail Wine Shop. Larry’s son, Erik, who owns Vail Photography in Oak Harbor, got word from his parents and ran down to snag some photos of Presley last week, but he was too late. “I’ve tried to lure him out with wine a few times,” said Patsy Vail, Larry’s wife. “But he seems very sheltered and unwilling to interact with the community.” Linda Eccles, Coupeville Chamber of Commerce president, said she suspected Presley was living in town when an artist going by the name of “Smelvis Bresley” opened a booth at last year’s Arts and Crafts Festival. “He was selling handmade barnacle sculptures alongside water-stained vinyl records,” Eccles said. “I approached him and said he looked like Elvis would today, but he just shifted his eyes away and mumbled, ‘A little less conversation, a little more action, please.” Confirmation of Presley’s well-being was made when he was spotted at a dark cor-

Barb Miller, a waitress at the bar, said she approached Presley, offered him a drink, and was turned down. “He said he’s sworn off drugs and alcohol since that near-fatal day in 1977,” Miller said. “Burning, burning, burning and nothing can cool me,” Presley said Tuesday night of his thoughts decades ago. “I just might turn into smoke. But I feel fine.” He wasn’t fine. But now he is. “Wise men say only fools rush in, but I can’t help falling in love with you,” Presley said of living in Coupeville. He said he had been traveling around the island since early 2008 and finally settled on Coupeville in 2010. “It’s just, uh, a really won-

derful place to call home,” Presley said. “Like the Skagit River flows surely to the sea, darling, so it goes, some things are meant to be.” After five years of living in his submarine, sneaking into Kim’s Cafe and even venturing toward Oak Harbor, Presley has finally decided to become an active member of the community. “He’s been thinking about this for a while,” said Oak Harbor Mayor Bob Dudley, a friend of Presley’s. “I told him I thought it was time for him to really engage with the community.” Presley has joined the Coupeville Port Board of Commissioners, Citizens of Ebey’s Reserve, the Oak Harbor and Coupeville town councils and Island Transit Board of Commissioners, and has become CEO of

Whidbey General Hospital. “I know many of these organizations have had some turmoil lately, but I really think I can remedy that,” Presley said. “Let’s rock, everybody, let’s rock.” Presley, now 80, said that while he has had some success in the music industry, he would really like to settle down and focus on his barnacle sculptures. “I don’t plan on getting into much trouble,” he said. While he has had some offers to join families in their homes, he said he’ll stay put in his little home under the wharf. “I like to watch families walk by and sometimes toss up my blue suede shoes to bring a smile to the little ones’ faces,” he said.

The scenic acreage that surrounds Monroe Landing has been a home and refuge to many. Initially one of three Salish villages located on the shores of Penn Cove, the beach made a perfect canoe landing area and temporary encampments cropped up around the cove. Rich in water, prairie and forest habitats, the area was also ideal for fishing, hunting and farming for early settlers. It is this area’s history of farming and aquaculture that the Whidbey Camano

Land Trust is attempting to secure by purchasing more than 300 acres of development rights around Monroe Landing. People want to see the area preserved for many different reasons, said Pat Powell, executive director of the Land Trust. “The property means different things to different people,” Powell said. Community hopes for the property include the conservation of historical farms that lay within Ebey’s Reserve, maintenance of open space, safeguarding of undeveloped area around the air-

port, and protection of scenic elements and wildlife habitats, she said. The proposed conservation includes the VanderVoet Farm, “a beloved and iconic landscape on Whidbey Island” that is the “scenic backdrop to the historic and popular Blue Fox Drive-in theater and is a much viewed pastoral entryway to Oak Harbor,” according to the application for Conservation Futures funds. Tri-county connector may end June 30 By JESSIE STENSLAND Staff reporter

Bus service between Whidbey Island and Skagit County will come to an end this summer unless Island Transit officials are able to carve out enough money from the agency’s limited budget to finance the route. The Island Transit board decided last Friday to hold a special meeting Monday, April 13 to discuss the future of the tri-county connector. Group helps to keep girls in school By JANIS REID Staff reporter

It started as just a bunch of gals who liked to quilt. The E.B. Quilters, named in honor of Oak Harbor Soroptimist Elena Bainbridge, is a group of Whidbey residents who gather at the Cottage Hobby House in Anacortes to quilt. When Brenda Merrick mentioned Days for Girls, an international program that sews reusable sanitary napkin kits for girls in underprivileged areas, the E.B. Quilters got to stitching. “We said, ‘oh no, we need to do this,’” said

Shannon Paterson, now chapter co-director, with Merrick, of the 12 E.B. Quilters. Since then, Paterson said, there has been a steady flow of new volunteers. “Everybody got involved. It was like wildfire.” The group has since started sharing an Oak Harbor space with the Heartbeat Safety Center on Fidalgo Avenue and meets at 5 p.m. the last Monday of every month. Paterson said it is their hope to increase the frequency of their kit creation days in July. For each kit, a girl receives a fabric bag that can be worn as a backpack filled with supplies including two “shields” that attach

to undergarments, eight flannel absorbent liners that are tucked into the shield, one wash cloth, two new undergarments, one travel-sized bar of soap and a couple of ziplock bags. Paterson concedes that the subject may be a tough one to discuss for some people. “It’s one of those subjects you don’t bring up at the grocery store,” Paterson said. But that makes it all the more important, Paterson said, because the organization “provides a product they have access to, it’s reusable, and it’s healthy for them.” The concept comes from the LyndenSEE DAYS, A4

Rick Almberg knows how to make a splash. The Oak Harbor councilman made his announcement that he will seek reelection surrounded by members of his campaign committee at a strategically chosen site downtown. He said the spot, next to the Windjammer Park sign, can be seen as the epicenter of the issues he is focused on as a councilman. It’s near to the site of the future wastewater treatment plant, a giant project that he wants to continue to help guide to a successful completion at a cost that is affordable to the community. CONTINUED FROM A1 based Days for Girls International message that girls and women without access to supplies often miss school and work. “What if not having sanitary supplies meant days without school, days without income, days without leaving the house?” the Days for Girls website states. “Girls use leaves, mattress stuffing, newspaper, corn husks, rocks, anything they can find ... but still miss up to two months of school every year. “The poverty cycle can be broken when girls stay in school.” Founding member Kathy Vass, who has been sewing for most of her life, said it’s “really kind of fun when you can do something creative and share it with someone.” “They’re missing school because they’re on their period for crying out loud,” Vass said. “You feel like you’re changing someone’s life.” Kits made in Oak Harbor and sent to Lynden and then are distributed to Africa or where they are needed. However, the organization has 325 chapters worldwide and the United States. In New Orleans, for example, a chapter focuses on the area’s homeless population, Paterson said. Studies have shown that these reusable packs can last for up to three years, Patterson said. Plus, Patterson said, “a woman in Africa can’t just go down to 7-Eleven and buy what she needs. Disposables don’t work there.” While those with an affinity for sewing are welcome, anyone wishing to be involved can also donate fabric,

Mayor Nancy Conard said she isn’t seeking reelection after 20 years at the town’s helm.

though the state funding hadn’t changed at that point. She blames former director Martha Rose for the mismanagement of the budget. Zachaukirk is not sure what she’ll do if the route is cancelled altogether. “People may not understand the difficulties veterans endure on a daily basis,” she said. “Many go without health care simply due to the associated stressors of getting to that facility.” Island Transit officials and local leaders lobbied state lawmakers to continue funding the tri-county connector, but the money doesn’t

Councilwoman Jackie Henderson is also up for reelection but hasn’t announced her intentions. The seats held by two members of the Whidbey General Hospital board, Georgie Gardner and Nancy Fey, will be on the ballot. All five positions on the North Whidbey Park and

appear to be in either state transportation bill, according to Graska. The financial problems with Island Transit that arose last year made it a difficult sell in Olympia, according to Oak Harbor City Councilman Rick Almberg, who’s the chairman of the Island Transit board. “What I’ve heard is that they want us to get our house in order before they’re willing to hand us anymore money,” he said. One sticking point for state lawmakers is Island Transit’s fare-free service; they want to see fares, which the transit board members said they will consider.

Recreation board, which has gone through strife in recent years, will also be on the ballot. Three seats on the Oak Harbor School board, two seats on the Coupeville school board, two on the Port of Coupeville, one on North Whidbey Fire and Rescue board and one on Central Whidbey Fire board will also appear on the ballot, along with various positions on cemetery districts, water districts and sewer districts.

In addition, Graska said the board approved his plan to clean up another relic of the agency’s past — the proliferation of unneeded buses. The board voted to declare 21 buses and 12 staff and support vehicles as surplus. For now, the board has to decide whether the agency can afford to continue a limited version of the off-island route without state funding and whether that even makes sense, Graska said. “We may be able to provide a bare-bones, skeletal service on these routes,” he said, stressing that it would be a much reduced level of service.

New transit board’s goal is to stabilize and return services

Island Transit is pleased to report it is in the midst of executing a recovery plan after having survived serious financial challenges that require significant reductions in bus service in July and September 2014. A new Interim Executive Director was hired to implement recovery planning for future financial stability, and a new Board of Directors was appointed. At its first meeting of 2015, Island Transit’s Board adopted a stabilization plan including the following key strategies: 1. Development of a financial stabilization plan. 2. Consideration of new funding sources. 3. Review of overlapping service with other transit districts. 4. Ongoing review of all routes and schedules. 5. Investigation of collaborative transportation solutions with Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI), school districts, and other qualifying organizations. 6. Discussion with neighboring public transit districts for ways to improve operating efficiencies. Embracing these goals and strategies, the management team is aggressively monitoring, analyzing and implementing policies and projects that will contribute to operating efficiencies and improved services. At the same time, budget levels are within approved parameters and future service reductions must be avoided. Meanwhile, a number of new, constructive activities are underway in 2015 to set the foundation for a more promising future. Some of these efforts include: n A carefully balanced 2015 budget. n Continuation of the Service Enhancement Plan to reinstate and modify most transit services that were eliminated or reduced in 2014. n Continuation of efforts to identify new sources of additional revenue. n Development of an Asset Management Plan and accompanying Asset Replacement Plan. n Continue regional service coordination efforts with Skagit, Whatcom and Snohomish counties. As the year progresses, we will continue to plan for added weekday service, the return of discontinued service and scheduled replacement of aging buses. Improvements and expansion in transit service will be slow in coming, but Island Transit is more encouraged and excited about its future than it was just a few short months ago. Maybe letter writer should join staff Editor, After reading Maryon Attwood’s latest letter to the Whidbey News-Times, I thought that maybe Sound Publishing might be interested in hiring her as a stringer writer. This way she could make sure that informative and correct information concerning the Navy and other military components would be fully vetted to the public. In case she is not aware of what a stringer writer is, it is someone who writes articles and submits them to the paper for publication. If they are accepted, then she is paid for her work. She would be in good company, as Dorothy Neil and Eileen Brown, among others, were in this category. If Ms. Attwood is not familiar with those names or the responsibilities of a stringer writer, a little research in the archives of the local papers would give her some insight. I believe that Ms. Attwood would then be able to show in concrete format just how the Navy and other military components are hurting Puget Sound. For example, instead of talking

about the orcas being harmed, she would just back up her claim with solid background evidence. Another example would be the loss of tourism at the Deception Pass State Park and the decrease in attendance at the park because of the jet noise. She could explain how in the beginning she was for the closing of OLF Coupeville due to the noise and inherent danger of the Navy jets in her town of Coupeville, but keeping NAS Whidbey open would be beneficial to Whidbey Island. Last but not least, she could show how she has now reached the conclusion that the Navy and other military components must now leave Puget Sound. Pubic comment needed on transit connector Editor, I recently wasted a Friday morning at Island Transit headquarters only to learn that the meeting concerning wht would happen with the Tri-County

Connectors linking Camano and Whidbey Islands via Mount Vernon was postponed to 9:30 a.m. Monday, April 13. Whether you support a $2 fare on the route, as I do, or not, whether you support Island Transit being patriotic and fulfilling promises to our state legislature and to the disabled community or not, you need to let your voice be heard and demand a final decision be made on April 13 so folks with disabilities have a mere 78 days to make life-altering decisions to seek new jobs and/or to move. I always get the wrath of Whidbey’s acutely anti-America pundits who want to close NAS Whidbey Island for saying I sure am grateful Island Transit serves OLF Coupeville for me to watch EA-18Gs train. OLF Coupeville is irreplaceably vital not just for aircrew safety, but also for the maintainers and other U.S. Navy personnel who work on aircraft carriers –- and that’s real clear to me, standing around 500 feet away hoping for afterburner. It’s a high privilege and honor to this American to answer the inner call to serve and defend plus photograph OLF Coupeville as an act of gratitude toward America’s Navy with Island Transit’s help. Cinco

Veronica M. Cinco

Veronica Mary Cinco died March 26, 2015, at Careage of Whidbey at the age of 92. She was born Sept. 18, 1922, in Auburn, Mass. Veronica was raised in Worcester and then moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she met a young sailor who became her future husband, Raymond A Cinco. Ray and Veronica were married in 1941. As a Navy family, they were sent to Panama City, Panama, and London, England; and, in 1975, the Cinco family arrived in Oak Harbor to be with their grandchildren. This was, perhaps, the most joy-filled time of their lives. In 1976, Veronica began working for the commissary at NAS Whidbey, assisting shoppers with their groceries. During her 38 years working as a bagger, she became affectionately known as “Gramma.” Following the death of her husband in 1986, she lived independently, surrounded by her many friends who became her Oak Harbor family. Veronica loved bingo, knitting afghans for her grandchildren, helping others in need and walking around town for hours when she was not working. She was known as strong, independent, caring, hardworking, occasionally stubborn, loyal and, most importantly, a devout Catholic. She retired from the commissary in 2014 at the age of 92. Mrs. Cinco is survived by her son, Raymond (Del), of Lennox, S.D., and daughter, Veronica LaGala, (Jack), of Springhill, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-greatgrandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond A. Cinco, her parents and four siblings. Visitation for Veronica will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 5, at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Visitation will be followed by a vigil service, rosary

and time of sharing 7-8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, April 6, at the church with the Rev. Paul Pluth, J.C.L. officiating. A reception will follow at Wallin Funeral Home. Waino William Johnson

Waino William “Wayne” Johnson died at his home in Coupeville on March 15, 2015, at the age of 93, surrounded by his family. Wayne was born Aug. 3, 1921, in Brocket, N.D., to Gustav and

Aili Johnson and was raised on the family farm. When Wayne was 9 years old, his father died suddenly, and Wayne was forced to go to work to support the family. He attended college for a time in North Dakota but was forced to quit because of family hardship. Waino moved to Southern California and was hired to work in an airplane manufacturing plant building planes for the war effort. He decided to go ice skating one day and met a young lady who was spending most of her time sitting on the ice and took pity on her. He showed her how to skate and a friendship developed, which blossomed into love, and on May 20, 1944, Wayne and Concetta Caringella were married in Pasadena, Calif. Just two short months later, on July 27, 1944, Wayne was drafted into the U.S. Army. At first duty station he saw action at the Battle of Okinawa. Wayne was critically injured in the battle with a bullet in his spine and left for dead. When he was discovered alive, he was eventually evacuated back to the U.S. and discharged from service. For his courage in combat and his injuries, he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal for Valor. Wayne decided to return to school under the GI Bill, attending Pasadena Community College and Santa Barbara State College. He received his bachelor’s and master’s Degrees and began a 30-year career as a teacher. He was hired by the Gilroy School District at Brownell

School as a home room and woodshop teacher for the seventh and eighth grade, a career he thoroughly enjoyed. Wayne retired at the age of 58, and he and Connie traveled, looking for a place to retire. They visited friends on Whidbey Island and decided Coupeville was their retirement paradise. Thirty years later, they still agreed this was home. Wayne continued his love of woodworking and also was an avid gardener. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Whidbey Island Chapter. Wayne is survived by his wife, Connie, of nearly 71 years; one daughter, Jill Bishop, and husband, Dan; one son, Paul Johnson, and wife, Kathy; two grandchildren, Jason Johnson and Katie Faias; and three great-grandchildren, Justin, Marley and Haiden, all of Beaverton, Ore. He is also survived by his brother,

Nestor, of Missoula, Mont., and his sisters, Lydia Ford, of Minneapolis, Sadie West, of Los Angeles, and Vienna Tripp, of Lolo, Mont. He was preceded in death by siblings Leo and Arve of Haines, Alaska. Memorial services for Waino Johnson will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 11, at the Coupeville Methodist Church with the Rev. Jin Ming Ma officiating. My wife and I are snowbirds. We have a modest little place in Arizona that we like to spend our time when we’re not at home at Shelterbay in La Conner, WA. This year, my wife beat me to Arizona so I was driving to meet her when I got in an awful car accident near Redding, California. I ended up being in the hospital for a month before being discharged. I had been to Fidalgo Rehabilitation a few years ago when I had gallbladder surgery, so I knew immediately I wanted to come back after this accident. When I pulled up to Fidalgo from the hospital in California, I immediately relaxed. Just seeing the building the familiar faces was so comforting. Even though I was in a lot of pain from my innumerable fractures, I was so relieved to be back. The nurses have been just as I remembered them to be, wonderful! They are attentive and available whenever I need them. The therapy team really tailored an exercise regime to ﬁt my individual needs. They know just how to push you to not only reach your goals but exceed them! I especially want to thank Blake Olin the Dietary Manager. I have Celiac Disease which means I have to be very careful with my food and read every label to make sure I can eat it. I have never had someone work so hard to cater to my dietary needs. It is so wonderful to have the peace of mind knowing that whatever I get served while at Fidalgo, meets my dietary restrictions and I don’t even have to think about it. I could get used to that. I’m headed home soon and I couldn’t have done it without the team at Fidalgo Rehabilitation. I know that if I ever needed another rehabilitation stay, I’ll be headed back and recommend you do the same! ~Ian Ellis

There were plenty of positives in the prep sports scene over the weekend. The Oak Harbor tennis and Coupeville softball and soccer teams each won their first games, the Coupeville baseball team opened league play with a win (and a nohitter), the Oak Harbor baseball team won a nine-inning thriller and the Oak Harbor soccer team scored its first goal of the spring to earn a tie in its Wesco opener.

The Bearcats scored two runs and left the bases loaded with the help of three Oak Harbor

errors. Snavely finished the game with eight strikeouts and one walk. Singles by Brent Mertins and C.J. The relationship between Suzanne Maris and Ken Grigsby is one of trust and mutual admiration. When Maris directs plays at the Whidbey Playhouse, she feels comfort in having Grigsby as producer, knowing he has a long track record of getting things accomplished while still wearing a friendly smile. She’s seen that combination in action under very different circumstances when she was a student in Grigsby’s Pacific Northwest history class at what was then Oak Harbor Junior High School. “He’s the only teacher who ever gave me detention,” Maris said, recalling a time when she arrived late to class. More than three decades later, Grigsby still gently nudges Maris when the situation arises. They’ve been working together on their latest production, “I Hate Hamlet” for the past 12 weeks. The comedy, written by Paul Rudnick, starts Friday,

April 3, with the first of 11 performances. “He’s just a really nice, jovial guy,” Maris said of Grigsby. “He gets stuff done. Everybody likes him so it’s great. “With a producer, you want to have a guy who you know is going to get everything done and pokes you with a stick to make sure you’re getting stuff done.” “I Hate Hamlet” has turned into somewhat of a reunion between a retired teacher and former Oak Harbor school mates. Two cast members, the director and assistant director all attended Oak Harbor schools and are long familiar with Grigsby. “This has probably been the most fun cast to work with because it’s a small cast,” said Troy Haugen, a longtime playhouse performer who plays the role of John Barrymore. “So, you get kind of personal. You learn things you can’t really learn with big casts. You wind up blending and meshing faster than most.” The cast is made up of only six actors. The plot

revolves around one central character, Andrew Rally, played by playhouse newcomer Chris Barrett. Rally is a budding Hollywood television star who accepts the role of Hamlet in a theater production then tries to wiggle his way out of it with the urging of his slick, fast-talking agent, played by George Washington Orange III. Rally’s attempts to get out of the role are made difficult by the haunting presence of Barrymore, a former stage actor considered the greatest Hamlet of his time. Barrymore tries to convince Rally that the honor and prestige of playing such a role on stage is an art form worth more than Hollywood

fame and fortune. In town less than a week, Barrett showed up for auditions in early January and landed the leading role. After graduating from UC Davis, where he was part of a student-run theater group, he moved to Oak Harbor to live with his brother, who’s in the Navy. “I had been in California my whole life,” said Barrett, who’s from Redding. “I just wanted to try something new.” Rounding out the cast are Sheila Terry, who’s performed in other shows in recent years, and Emily Boyle and Orange, two active-duty sailors acting in their second performances at the Oak Harbor playhouse. For Boyle, a sonar technician, it will be her last local appearance onstage. She is being transferred in May after two years on Whidbey and is headed to Washington, D.C. “This is a great family being away from your own,” she said of the playhouse. Tara Hizon, Oak Harbor city councilwoman, is the play’s assistant director and was another familiar face in the hallways to Grigsby during his teaching tenure that covered 34 years.

While the process has been moving forward slowly over the last couple of years, there are still steps to be taken. Powell said the property owners in question are interested in selling the develop-

ment rights but an agreement has to be made. “Before we can move forward to protect these properties, we will make a fair market value offer to the owners, based on appraisals, which are, right now, being independently reviewed and approved,” Powell said. “At that point, it is up to the owners to decide to accept the offer or not. This is all about private property rights and willing landowners. It is critical that the proposal works for the private landowners.”

Island County Assistant Commissioner I.L. Tacsu said both sites have their pros and cons. The OLF site allows the county to “concentrate noisy activity” in one spot, Tacsu said. “That way we wouldn’t be upsetting another portion of the population. Besides, those folks are use to the noise.” The Fakkema farm and its sweeping view of Puget Sound would be “the most gorgeous setting for an athletic venue in the U.S.,” Tacus said. This would be a reversal by the county, which previously stopped development of the farm into a residential area. The owners’ bid to subdivide the acreage was denied several years ago because, the county said, it would lead to urban sprawl and damage the rural atmosphere of Whidbey Island. “This is different,” Tacsu said. “This isn’t several people trying to sell their own property; this would benefit the county. “The county could make an obscene amount of money with this track. Government revenue trumps ideals any day of the week and twice on race day.” Allen, in addition to building the track, is going to start his own NASCAR race team, Paul Allen Racing, or PAR. According to Rashauft, one of the PAR car drivers will be Seahawk running back Marshawn Lynch, who is expected to retire from football after one more season. Lynch currently races during the football off season in the Hollywood Series, a circuit designed for celebrity racers. The Hollywood Series receives little publicity because it is a private enterprise and the races aren’t open to public spectators. Many of NASCAR’s regular drivers enter Hollywood events during NASCAR’s down time to keep their skills sharp, Dinpahndt said. The quality of driving at Hollywood is equal to the highest level of NASCAR, according to Dinpahndt. With their vast financial resources, the drivers have
