The Vashon Park District will open the pool for one day of free swimming on Saturday, rain or shine. The event, organizers say, is meant to thank the community for supporting the pool, provide information on the upcoming extended season and allow the Friends of Vashon Pool to preview their vision for a covered pool. Pool manager Scott Bonney has promised to heat the locker rooms as well as the water. “I’ll crank it up to 88 or

90 degrees,” he said. “You can jump in with steam rising off the pool.” Representatives from the Friends of the Vashon Pool will be on hand to discuss their work, recruit new volunteers and let people know about the swimming season, which will go through September this year. They will also discuss their efforts to make swimming throughout the year possible at the public pool — an effort that has taken place repeatedly since the pool was first built in 1974. The Friends of the Vashon Pool came together

School district moves forward on plan to update sex education By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer

Vashon’s school board has unanimously approved a plan to update sexual health education at the Vashon Island School District, including providing condoms at the high school. School officials have praised the new plan, saying it outlines a more holistic approach to sex education. Superintendent Michael Soltman said he and other administrators will now begin work to implement it in the classroom, something that could be a challenge because the schedule at Vashon High School does not allow for added health classes beyond the one semester currently offered. New sexual health curriculum and teacher training is in the works for McMurray Middle School, Soltman said, and it’s possible some education could be worked into VHS’s smart periods — time students now use to work on homework or get extra help from teachers — or at other times of the day. “Creating a bunch of new semester courses is not an option,” he said. “We have to create experiences somehow within the time we have.” The plan approved by the board last Thursday was crafted over the last several months by a committee of district representatives, health professionals and other community members that formed after the district garnered a large grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The 10-point plan

includes promoting the skills necessary for teens to choose healthy behaviors; educating about all forms of birth control and disease prevention, while teaching abstinence as the only certain way to avoid pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, and addressing the needs of youth who are sexually active, including making condoms available at VHS. Board chair Laura Wishik proposed removing the condom portion from the plan, saying she would rather see the high school make condoms available as a one-year pilot program. However, the board declined to do so. On Friday, Wishik said she is concerned there is not yet a clear plan for providing education around condoms when they are eventually distributed. “I don’t feel very good about the fact that I don’t think we know a way to provide condoms that will also provide the counseling and education that’s really needed,” she said. However, Soltman said administrators will work on planning education around condoms as they determine where and how they will be made available. The plan for condoms will not require board approval, but may be crafted with input from the committee. “We have to have a good solid way to distribute information,” he said. Fully implementing the plan, Soltman said, could take a couple years. “There’s some work to be done,” he said.

Farmers market gears up for a new season Market veteran will also host pop-up store for new businesses By SARAH LOW Staff Writer

Along with warmer temperatures, baseball season and a few more weekend ferry runs, the arrival of spring brings the farmers market back for another season at the Village Green. The first market of 2015 will take place on Saturday, and market manager Caleb Johns described some notable vendor changes. Most noticeable is that the market will have two dairy vendors this year. “It’s a niche that has been in high demand on the island, so it’s really exciting that they’ll be here,” Johns said. Both Burton Hill Farm goat dairy, owned by Collin and Rebecca Nedeiros, and Cornerstone Farm and Dairy, a cow dairy owned by Natalie and Luke Sheard, are raw milk dairies that will offer milk and aged cheeses at the market. Johns also noted that while market regular Island Meadow Farm is taking this season off, there will be a new farm in its place as Liam Rockwell’s Cedar Spring Farm enters the mix. Rockwell interned at Hogsback Farm

before recently starting his own farm. “His focus is produce and highyield gardening,” Johns said. Snapdragon will also not participate in the market this season, but the Vashon Island Baking Company will be there “purveying all things delicious,” Johns said, and one vendor, Azula Phillips, has made a big change. “She’s our newest chocolatier,” he said. Phillips, best known at the market for her unique feather headpieces, will now sell raw vegan organic chocolate truffles as the Mighty Truffle Confectionery — a business she started at the Sugar Shack, the community kitchen and event space owned by Hedy Anderson of King Caramel. Anderson and a number of the small businesses that rent time at the Sugar Shack will hold a pop-up market of their own on Saturday to correspond with the farmers market opening. “It’s a way to showcase some of these small businesses on the island, who are just getting their feet wet and aren’t quite ready to jump into farmers market just yet,” Anderson explained. Science shows why we can’t kick sweets

Say yes to levy as park district works through its troubles

“I don’t want to offend you,” my friend said apologetically, “but isn’t it just a matter of having self-control?” We were talking about the struggles some people, including me, have with food. My friend is one of those people who never had a weight problem. She “watches what she eats” and exercises every day. To her it is like brushing her teeth. “I’m so glad you asked!” I told her. “Willpower and self-control are enough for some people, but some of us have more going on.” Let me tell you about the rats. Scientists got some lab rats addicted to cocaine. Then they let them choose cocaine or sugar water. Nearly all the cocaineaddicted rats chose sugar. In another experiment, rats were fed the yummy white filling from Oreo cookies. After they got used to eating it, they were offered food with no sugar. Those rats refused to eat — at all. They preferred to starve if they couldn’t have Oreo filling. It turns out that sugar is eight times more addictive than cocaine. You can see the addiction in brain scans. People had their brains scanned while they drank a chocolate shake. A normal person’s brain lights up when they consume sugar. The brains of people who are addicted to sugar light up much less because they have developed tolerance. The area of the brain that lights up is the same area activated by heroin and cocaine. It

Despite unhappiness in recent years with the Vashon Park District, island voters should renew the park district’s levy this month. Taking tax dollars away from this agency, which keeps our parks open and so much more, would be a mistake. There’s little question that the VES Fields project was mismanaged, becoming a source of great public frustration. It went far over budget, took funding from other district needs, and still isn’t complete, despite getting underway five years ago. However, there’s been turnover since then in the park district’s director and staff. The new team is setting the district on the right track, and the fields will be finished this year. However, the chief reason voters should renew the levy is that our island park district exists for an important reason. If voters are unhappy with how the park district has acted or spent public money, they should choose new representatives when the time comes, not defund the agency. The park district maintains the parks and beaches used by many, some of the most well-loved spots on the island. It also facilitates the bulk of the recreational opportunities on Vashon, managing the public pool, the boathouse in Burton, athletic fields at the schools, equestrian trails and the horse arena, the Tramp Harbor dock, the playground in town, the Village Green and the island’s only skate park and disc golf course. These are many of our island’s greatest assets, things that help make Vashon a great place to live. When it comes to the levy, the stakes are simply too high. Three park commissioner positions are up for vote this November — two of the board members with expiring terms have been with the district for several years. Whether or not these commissioners choose to run again, taxpayers will likely have some decisions to make. Then will be the time to consider the district’s future and set the agency up for further change. For now, it’s clear that the island needs continued funding of the Vashon Park District.

Grant funding targets some important local causes Last week’s article on grants from Granny’s Attic to help fund some island health projects points out what wonderful work is being done by their board to address some major needs of island residents (“Health Projects launch with aid from Granny’s Attic grants,” March 25). The Granny’s board perceptively selected programs that will best utilize funds for the island’s increasingly aging population, targeting such key

areas as off-island transportation for medical needs and supporting our care center’s ability to provide services to islanders who may not be able to afford care. Not limited to senior needs, Granny’s has also funded other programs with the Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness and the Vashon Island Growers Association. These are not glamorous programs — not the stuff of capital campaigns — but a wonderful example of islanders taking care of other islanders. My thanks to the board for their fine stewardship.

Neither snow nor rain lack of stamps impedes Burton post office The other day, I walked into the Burton branch of our estimable island post office system, rang the quaint little bell on the counter in order to summon a post-person and waited. The usual postmistress, if that is the right term, was on vacation, and my first thought was: “Wait! They get vacations? What about ‘Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night’... etc?� I rang the bell again, and eventually a nice lady came around from behind the post boxes she was stuffing with, as near as I could tell, nothing more than circulars from various grocery stores and catalogues from L.L. Bean. “Can I help you?� she asked. In my head, I immediately heard my late grammar Nazi mother saying, “I don’t know, CAN you?� But I knew the woman really meant MAY I, and did not correct her. People, I have learned, do not take kindly to grammar correction. I never did, either. I wish my dead mother would shut up; she’s not helping. “I’d like a book of first-class stamps, please,� I said finally. “I’m sorry, but we have no stamps.� The post office has no stamps. Now I don’t know about you, but I’m

Director will raise funds for library with film screening Creator of “Outsourced” brings a movie about a faux rock band By JULI GOETZ MORSER Staff Writer

What would be a last-ditch effort for a struggling rock band trying to garner attention on the music scene? Hop a plane to Tokyo, of course, and make it big in Japan. That’s the premise of writer and director John Jeffcoat’s comical film “Big in Japan,” which chronicles the madcapped musical odyssey of a Seattle band on tour in Japan. The feature will be shown on Vashon’s silver screen Friday as a fundraiser for Friends of the Vashon Library (FOL). Jeffcoat will be on hand after the show for a question and answer session. Jeffcoat, whose other popular films include “Outsourced” and “Bingo,” said the idea for “Big in Japan” arose at a time when he was shooting a lot of documentaries about Seattle bands for MTV and writing scripts for an NBC series based on his film “Outsourced.” He longed to return to the world of production. “I wanted to do something fun with a

small crew — a rock’n’roll movie,” Jeffcoat recalled. “An MTV producer said she knew of a band who wanted to do a reality show, but I wasn’t interested in doing a documentary.” Nevertheless, Jeffcoat met with the band Tennis Pro, and the decision was eventually made to book gigs in Japan, where Jeffcoat would shoot the band’s performances. Jeffcoat said the whole trip was pretty much improvised. After reviewing the footage, Jeffcoat wrote a script and then returned to Japan with the band to shoot scenes to fill in the narrative, and the ersatz documentary was born. “Big in Japan” tells a story with humor and heart that is loosely based on the band’s misadventures. It has been likened to The Beatles’ movie “A Hard Day’s Night” — not in comparison to the musical performances, but rather in the way Jeffcoat’s guerilla-style filming captures the antics of the group’s Japan tour. Along the way, Vashon played a supporting role in the feature. Four years ago, Jeffcoat, his wife and two children moved to the island looking to recreate the feel of the small farming community in South Africa where they had previously lived. “I edited ‘Big in Japan’ on the island in my home office,” Jeffcoat said, “and I

self-confessed “Outsourced” fans, asked Jeffcoat if he could help with a fundraiser, he readily agreed. Jan Riley, operations supervisor for Vashon Library, explained that Vashon Film Society and the Vashon Theatre are also helping FOL, an independent group that raises money for library programs. “FOL pays for some of our most popular programs like Norm Hollingshead’s opera previews and the free SAT prep for our high school students,” Riley said. “They also contributed to the Library To Go van, which visits preschools, Chautauqua and seniors, bringing them books and offering readers’ advisory ... and have funded supplies for our very popular Late Night for Teens program.” As for Jeffcoat, he said he is happy to support the library. “I’ve always been a big fan of libraries,” he said. “Big in Japan” will play at 8:30 p.m. Friday. Snapdragon will show work by Seattle artist and musician Jana McCall. The Hardware Store Restaurant will feature island native and travel/nature photographer Aaron McCoy. McCoy, whose work is on the cover of Lonely Planet guidebooks, TIME, Sunset and National Geographic Traveler magazines, was introduced to photography at Vashon High School. Though he has lived and traveled extensively in Central and South America, McCoy said that Vashon has always been his base. “The show is a retrospective,” McCoy said. “I’ve included my favorite shots of Vashon over the years.”

VALISE will present “Pretty Little Heads,” a collection of video, sound and sculptural artwork by Seattle artists Molly Mac and Julia Freeman. Acclaimed Vashon artists Britt Freda and Charlotte Masi will show their work in the VAA Gallery. Vashon Community Care will showcase work by two local artists, illustrator Rayne Beaudoin and watercolorist Geri Peterson. Both artists work in watercolor and gouache and portray many images of Vashon. Vashon Intuitive Arts will show artist Marjon McDermott’s acrylic paintings on canvas. Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum will open a show in honor of the Point Robinson Lighthouse’s 100th anniversary. See story on page 1. Last Thursday the Pirate track and field team enjoyed near 70 degree weather and all the competition they could handle at a combined Nisqually and Emerald City League showdown at the West Seattle Stadium. In team scoring, the Vashon girls finished second of 12 teams with 98 points. Charles Wright Academy took third with 97, and Bellevue Christian took first place with 111 points. The lion’s share of the team points for the Pirates came from the field events, with Natalie VanDevanter and Emily Brown finishing second and third in discus. VanDevanter had a throw of 78 feet, 4 inches. Kat Andrus and Annika Hille finished second and third in the long jump, with Andrus completing a jump of 14 feet, 9 inches. The highlight of the meet was Emily Brown and Andrus sweeping the triple jump, placing first and second, which added 18 points for the girls. In the process, Andrus broke her own school record, which she set last year as a freshman when she hit 35 feet, 10 inches. At West Seattle Stadium, Andrus went 36

feet, 1 inch, to set a new standard at VHS. In the girls’ running events, sophomore Eva Anderson placed third in the mile race in 5:58. Anderson also placed fourth in a competitive 800-meter race with a time of 2:39. The 4-by-100 relay team of Hille, Brown, Annie Muller and Lauren Jenks placed third with a time of 54.18. Overall the Pirate boys’ team placed eighth out of 12 teams at the meet, with 31 team points. Senior Nate Lawson had the best performance of the day by placing second in the boys’ javelin with a throw of 128 feet, 8 inches. The boys 4-by-100 relay team with Kellan Riley, Gerry Gerrior, Nate Lawson and Jason Kruly placed fifth with a time of 48.16. Abby Kim, who lives on Vashon but competes for Seattle Christian, placed first in the girls’ long jump at 17 feet, 4 inches, and first in the 100-meter dash at 12.48. The Pirate baseball team played just their second game of the season last Friday, defeating league rival Bellevue Christian, 5-1, at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue. Senior Josh Hruska Myer was dominant on the mound, allowing only one run over his five innings of work. He picked up the win striking out four, giving up four hits and no walks. Junior Logan Hawkins came on in relief, finishing the game holding the Vikings hitless and striking out four. O f fen sively, Vashon came out swinging, scoring three runs in the first inning. The team picked up one run in the third, and the final run came across home plate in the sixth. Junior Sam Schoenberg went 2-4 with a run scored. Hawkins

Great pitching, defense and clutch hitting will be our recipe for victory all season.” The Pirates faced Bellevue Christian again on March 31 and will play them again at home at 4 p.m. Thursday. The Pirate JV team played three games last week. They lost a heart-

breaker on the home field in an extrainning nail-biter to Chief Sealth on March 24. They faced the same team on March 26, getting shelled early and dropping by a final score of 12-2. Kat Andrus is a versatile Track and Field athlete who has decided to concentrate on field events this year. She has added the javelin throw to her repertoire of long and triple jumps. On Thursday, March 26th, Kat broke her own school record in the triple jump with a distance of 36’ 1’, far outpacing all other girls in the Nisqually League. As a very experienced jumper, Kat has served as a mentor to our less-experienced jumpers this year as well. Her hard work and keen analysis are huge assets to the Pirate Track and Field Team.

After starting the season with a win, soccer sees a week of losses Boys’ team drops games to Charles Wright and Seattle Christian by one point each By BEN BORK For The Beachcomber

Vashon’s boys’ varsity soccer players had their first home game on Tuesday, March 24, during what proved to be a beautiful break in the weather. Vashon High School rivals Charles Wright took the field and started in at a fast pace. Within the first minute, the Vashon defense was caught with their hands in their pockets and would get scored on by a well-placed shot into the back of the net. Charles Wright doubled its efforts and went up 2-0 not much later. Before the half ended, Vashon goalkeeper Ben Stemer was tested on a penalty kick. Stemer dove correctly and parried the ball away from goal, and the stadium erupted. This was the fourth time in two seasons that the Vashon goalie had denied opponents a goal on a penalty kick. In the second half, utilizing more of their stamina through the midfield, Vashon strung together a couple of sweet passes that found Gabe Reoux onside. He burned the rather slow defender and chipped a nice shot over the head of their goalkeeper. With a quick reset, Charles Wright kicked off and found themselves on a cor-

ner kick. Stemer got a hand on the short cross only to have his possession slip away as Charles Wright toe-poked the ball into the goal. With time waning, Vashon drove toward the goal and saw a rebounded ball come right at the kicking foot of Vashon midfielder Sam Foucault. He buried it in the back of the net from 20 yards out. Through all of their efforts, time ran out for the Pirates as Charles Wright walked away with a 3-2 win. Several days later, Vashon traveled to play Seattle Christian. The Vashon players came out strong and controlled the game easily. Reoux scored on an early cross to put the varsity team up. Seattle Christian re-doubled their efforts and the intensity of the match quickened. There was a lot of play in the middle third of the field, with turnovers from both teams becoming quite repetitive. Penalties and set pieces ensued for each team, which showed disastrous defending and many nervy moments. In the end, Seattle Christian would get their go-ahead winning goal and beat the Pirates 2-1. It was a tough week of losses for the Pirates, but they hope to turn the corner on these defeats and find a couple of wins. Up next at the VHS stadium, the team will take on Klahowya High School at 6 p.m. on Thursday and then Blaine High School at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. — Ben Bork is the coach of the varsity boys’ soccer team.

The spring crew season has proven a challenging one so far, with the March 21 Green Lake Spring Extravaganza first shortened to 500 meters and then canceled after just three races due to a strong southwesterly wind that sailed over the finish line to land in the middle of the race course with a 20-mile-per-hour thump. The junior crew picked up the pieces with a visit to American Lake in Lakewood on Sunday. There they rowed against Olympia (for the third time — they are probably tired of seeing the team pull into the parking lot) and Commencement Bay Rowing Club. At Green Lake, Vashon won two of the three races it entered before the weather turned. The junior men’s quad (Patrick Hanson, Fletcher Call, Liam McConnell, Forrest Miller and coxswain Olivia Mackie) rowed into the headwind to pound out one victory. The master women’s lightweight quad (Celia Congdon, Therese Smith, Carrie Singer and Jan Peterson) also had a

solid win against an open field. This Sunday the conditions were breezy but rowable, and the course returned to the standard 2,000-meter length for juniors. Vashon won both singles events, with Katrina Heffernan taking the women’s race and Liam McConnell the men’s. Kirsten Girard and Kalie Heffernan won the women’s double then jumped in a quad with Rhea Enzian and Katrina to take that event as well. The lightweight women’s four won the JV race with KaiLi Scheer, Maddie McEachern, Virginia Miller and Shannon Lipe, coxed by Ally Clevenger. Shannon and KaiLi also won their JV double race. Coach Richard Parr summed up the day as “a really worthwhile day of rowing and a big confidence booster, especially for the novice women and the lightweight men (with two second place finishes).” “The weather hasn’t been very cooperative these last three weeks,” he added, “so it is great to get some quality racing in.” The junior crew will race at the Husky Open in University of Washington’s Montlake Cut next Saturday, April 4. — Pat Call is the father of a junior rower.

Softball team drops one to Bellevue Christian The Pirate fastpitch softball team took on the Bellevue Christian Vikings at Hidden Valley Park in Bellevue Friday, losing the contest 14-3. The Pirates got off to a slow start, but rallied in the fourth inning, scoring their three runs off the hitting of Cassandra Hernandez and Makenna McVey, with walks by Hannah MacArthur and Lilly Hennessey. Coach Jackie Merrill noted that her favorite part of the season is the beginning, which can also be challenging. “After 10 days of practice, we put

together the random athletic talents of 17 girls,” she said. “We send the team out to play ball. The results are right in front of you ‘for real,’ and then you have six more weeks to modify, improve and win. I admire the growth, spirit, team bonding, momentum and passion for the sport as we play throughout the season.” The team will face the Vikings again twice this week. There are also profiles of three lighthouse keepers who lived at the point before 1979, when the light became automated. One of the keepers, Mark Suko, who kept the light from 1970 to 1972, will be at the exhibit opening during the First Friday

And what about the LED light that replaced the lens in 2008? “Cheap plastic. The LEDs do the job, but they are not beautiful like the lenses were.” Despite the modernized light — and foghorn — now in place at Point Robinson, Wubbold still brags that in its 100 years of standing watch, there have never been any significant marine accidents in the area. The importance of the place for Wubbold — and for Vashon — is clear in the new exhibit, which heritage museum board member Rose Edgecombe describes as “phenomenal.” “I got a lot of help from the Coast Guard museum,” DeWire said, “and Captain Joe was a real mentor to me. My mom tells me she’s very proud.”

The heritage museum’s new exhibit “Point Robinson Lighthouse: 100 Years on Watch” opens at 6 p.m. for First Friday and will run through Oct. 15. Regular museum hours are 1 to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, and admission is by donation.

Robert W. Holder Robert W. Holder was born on Jan. 17, 1931, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Carl and Emilie Holder. He died of multiple myeloma on March 13, 2015, in Redmond, Washington, at age 84. He was a graduate of West Waterloo High School and a graduate of the University of Idaho with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and later a master’s degree. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society and Blue Key and was captain of the University of Idaho football team, where he was an AllCoast linebacker in 1951. He was also a member and president of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and in the NROTC program, commissioned in 1953 aboard the USS Gurke as a naval officer in the Korean War. In 1959 he joined Merrill Lynch in Spokane, Washington, where he became a vice president and worked for 42 years. He was a former president of the Vandal Booster Club, a member of the University of Idaho Foundation board and a member of the Exchange Service Club of Downtown

Spokane, the Presbyterian church, the Elks Club, the Spokane City Club and the Spokane Country Club. He was also an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He recently lived in Bellevue and on Vashon Island. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Suzanne Holder. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Jones Holder, son Michael (Lisa) Holder, and children: Emily, Jessica and Eric of Federal Way; son William Holder and daughters: Meg, Betsy and Annie of Seattle; daughter Ann Holder Strand (David) of Boulder, Colorado, and sons: Zachary and Charlie. He was also survived by a sister, Maxine Heise of Waterloo, and several nephews and cousins. A service was held on March 21 in Redmond.

William B. Crawford William B. Crawford died on Jan. 23, 2015. He was 78 years old. Crawford was born in Havre, Montana, on July 21, 1936, to Lloyd and Georgia Crawford. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Beverly of Vashon, and his sister, Jody Lorey of Hawaii. Crawford worked for Prime Construction for many years and was most proud of helping build the Bonner’s Ferry, Boundary and Libbey dams, the current Monroe Correctional Complex and Woodinville High School. His last project was Chautauqua Elementary School, where

he was injured and became totally disabled. In his senior years, he took up swimming early every morning at the Vashon Athletic Club pool, which led to his joining the Senior Olympics. He won first place in nearly every race he entered. He was also a model train enthusiast after winning a train set that was on display every Christmas at the old Vashon hardware store. He expanded the original train set by building Mount Rainier, the Three Sisters mountain range and a complete town. He put cameras on the engines, hung tracks from the ceilings, and now the set takes up the entire rec room at his home. Crawford delighted in

showing children of his friends how to run the three sets of trains at the same time. He will be missed.
