Pierce County Ferry riders invited to take surveys on ferry use Pierce County Ferry riders are invited to take a survey during each of their sailings on March 17, 19, 21, and 22 to share information about their trip as part of the ferry system's Waterborne Transportation Study. The origin and destination survey will be passed out on sailings starting at noon March 17 and 19, and on all sailings on March 21 and 22. The surveys should be returned before or as riders disembark. Riders will be asked for information such as the reason for their trip, what type of fare they purchased, how they boarded the ferry, and how they will reach their ultimate destination.

"We want to learn more about our riders and how they use the Pierce County Ferry," said Deb Wallace, Pierce County Public Works and Utilities airport and ferry administrator. "This information will help us as we evaluate potential alternatives for the system during the study." Residents of Anderson and Ketron islands, along with those who own property on the islands, will be asked to take a separate survey online by March 27 to share information about household demographics, how they use the ferry, and current ferry service. These individuals will soon receive a postcard with instructions on how to access that survey. WSDOT to begin Pac Ave, McKinley Way bridge demolitions this spring Images Courtesy Washington State Department of Transportation April's showers won't dampen the demolition of a four-lane overpass spanning Interstate 5 in downtown Tacoma. The Pacific Avenue overpass will soon be turned into a pile of rubble to make way for high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes. The bridge demolition is part of the Washington State Department of Transportation's (WSDOT) Interstate 5 M Street to Portland Avenue HOV Project. The Pacific Avenue overpass is one of two bridges that will be removed and rebuilt in this project to create HOV lanes through Tacoma. Pacific Avenue will close at Interstate 5 on Mon., April 6, and remain closed until March 2016, while crews demolish and rebuild the overpass. During the closure, drivers can cross Interstate 5 using a signed detour route to McKinley Way. Once the new overpass at Pacific Avenue is open to traffic, WSDOT will close the McKinley Way overpass for 18 months while crews replace it. "We know this lengthy Pacific Avenue closure will affect Tacoma businesses and residents, which is why we won't close both Pacific Avenue and McKinley Way at the same time," said WSDOT Olympic Region Administrator Kevin Dayton. Demolition of the Pacific Avenue overpass is expected to take approximately three months. Construction crews will first demolish the bridge approaches and then the bridge, working overnight hours when Interstate 5 traffic volumes are lowest. Crews will start on the northbound side of Interstate 5 near the Interstate 705 / State Route 7 interchange. Drivers should expect lane and ramp closures on Interstate 5 during demolition, and details of the lane closures will be forthcoming.

ability of the system, and evaluate the system's 14year capital needs. The study and resulting plan are expected to be complete in early summer 2015. The study will be completed in three phases. In Phase 1, which started in late November and lasted through February, the current status of the ferry system was assessed to understand the system's history and outlook, and identify key challenges and opportunities for the future. The county analyzed population and ridership, fare structure and ticketing system technology, the system's finances, and service including vessels, terminals and operations.The county will develop alternatives for the ferry schedule, fare structure, ticketing technology, and cost and revenue strategies during Phase 2 in March. In Phase 3, the potential impacts of the alternatives to ridership, finances, customers, and communities will be examined before the plan is developed. During this phase, Pierce County will host two public meetings to share the proposed alternatives and gather feedback. A study advisory group has been formed to provide input on the needs of the ferry system and the implications of any alternatives. BERK Consulting, a Seattle firm, has been hired to lead the study on the county's behalf. The system was last analyzed by the 2003 Waterborne Transportation Study. The Pierce County Ferry System provides service between the town of Steilacoom and Anderson and Ketron islands. More information about the study is available online at piercecountywa. org/ferry. Pierce County Superior Court to host national jury management seminar Jury administrators from around the nation are coming to Pierce County this month for a three-day advanced training seminar. The Virginia-based National Center for State Courts selected Pierce County's Jury Administration Office as the host after working together on a technical assistance study. The study was complimentary of Pierce County Jury Administration operations, and also identified areas for improvement and efficiency. "This is the first time the National Center for State Courts has held this training in Washington State and we are pleased to have been chosen to host it," said Pierce County Superior Court Presiding Judge Frank Cuthbertson. "This will be an outstanding opportunity for the staff of our Jury Administration Office to join their counterparts from across the nation, take our jury operations to the next level and become even better at what they do." The seminar, to be held March 25-27, is entitled "Fair and Effective Practices in Jury Management." It will be conducted by Paula Hannaford-Agor, director of the Center for Jury Studies at the National Center for State Courts. The training is limited to 40 participants and the registration list includes jury managers from all over the United States, including the U.S. Territorial Court in Guam. The Pierce County Jury Administration Office has 4 participants registered for the training. Jury operations will be temporarily relocated to Courtroom 100 on first floor of the CountyCity Building to accommodate the training seminar.
