Suspect in barista assault surrenders to police in Idaho BY DEAN A. RADFORD dradford@rentonreporter.com
A 42-year-old felon wanted in the assault of his former girlfriend at a coffee stand in North Renton in February surrendered March 7 to police in northern Idaho. Renton Police credit the public with providing tips that may ultimately have led to the surrender of Shad A. Johnson, who formerly lived in Idaho, according to Renton Police Detective Robert Onishi. Johnson turned himself into authorities in Wallace, Idaho, after he heard he was wanted in Washington state, according to Onishi. He was still being held in jail in Idaho mid-week while details of his extradition were worked out. According to police, the victim was asleep in his truck outside the stand when the victim arrived for work at about 4:30 a.m. Feb. 17. She asked him to move as she tried to open the stand and a confrontation ensued during which Johnson allegedly forced his way inside the stand, and sexually assaulted the victim, according to police.

Council approves update to give nuisance law more teeth BY BRIAN BECKLEY bbeckley@rentonreporter.com
The city council on Monday passed an update to the city’s nuisance property law that clarifies a few aspects of the ordinance and adds more teeth to the emergency provisions of the law. Originally passed in March 2014, the law
is designed to help the city deal with chronic problem properties, such as those that receive multiple calls for police service within a 60-day period. The ordinance allows the the city the ability to revoke the business license of chronic nuisance properties, such as taverns that get many calls for fights, noise and other police complaints. But City Attorney Larry Warren said his office noticed a few things in the law that could potentially cause the city problems trying to enforce it so few minor changes had to be enacted. For example, one of the changes approved Monday makes sure calls to an

establishment are for incidents actually occurring at the establishment. According to Warren, two of the police visits to one local bar dealt with high school kids being too loud as they crossed the business’s parking lot. Another listed the address because a driver pulled over for a DUI pulled into the establishment’s parking lot. However, none of those incidents had anything to do with the business and should therefore not be counted against them. “We want to make sure it’s clear due process is involved in this thing and that the incidents are connected to the business,”
Warren said. Warren said the city also strengthened the emergency provisions, giving them a little more teeth. Now, following two physical assaults or shootings at a given location, the city can issue an emergency nuisance citation and potentially pull the business’s license. The changes also include a new section making it clear that the legal owner has a presumption of control over the property and knows what a lessee is doing. DISTRICT COLLEGE PREP TESTING
Thanks to a federal Raceto-the-Top grant, about 900 high school students from all Renton School District high schools recently took the SAT college-entrance exams. Students usually pay $50 per test and the test is normally administered on the weekend, at a neighboring location, but students were able to take the tests during the school day for free. Young girls will model period costumes and raise money for Seattle Children’s Hospital, in the American Girl Fashion Show coming to the Newcastle Golf Club this weekend. The charity event is expected to draw some 1,300 people to five shows, during the weekend. The fashion shows are 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., March 14, and 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., March 15. The shows feature the young models with their dolls in matching outfits. However, if you don’t have your ticket already, it’s too late to purchase them for this year’s show. Tickets were available through Wednesday. “The fashion show is a fun way to learn about what girls wore a long time ago,” Ann Doughty, event organizer, said via email. “These girls lived in different periods of America’s past, but they show how the values and interests girls had in times long ago are still relevant and inspirational to girls today. We’ll see outfits they would have

really worn in their times.” Participating girls range from 6 to 10 years old and there will be 50 models per show, with three show groups. The models have a challenge to raise at least $100 on their own. Last year’s models raised $17,000. Most of the models raise the funds through bake
sales, making scarves, bracelets, piano recitals and other activities. “We want to teach them how to be philanthropic and know that at any age you can make a difference,” said Doughty. All the money raised goes toward Seattle Children’s Hospital’s Uncompensated Care Fund. This year alone

Things moving fast for local teen singer/songwriter BY TRACEY COMPTON tcompton@rentonreporter.com
A
t age 14, Renton resident Kaedyn Kashmir is already living the life of a pop
star. This month, the singer/songwriter is releasing her debut album which she worked on with Warren Huart, multi-platinum producer of The Fray, James Blunt and Aerosmith. She’s been a featured artist on the online music site ReverbNation and she just appeared on KING 5’s “New Day Northwest” talk show. Things are moving fast for the eighth grader at Northwood Middle School. “It was an incredible experience,” Kashmir said of her first TV appearance. “Honestly, you know, first time doing that sort of thing, so even when I’m on stage performing I get really nervous, but for some reason, up there, I wasn’t.” Kashmir has been singing since she was 2 or 3 years old and came up with her first tune, she said, at age 3. “Actually my oldest song on my album is, “Love is Just a Fairytale,” which I wrote when I was 11,” she said. Kashmir considers her music “pop-ish” and follows the style of singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles. Kashmir sings with a richness much older than her age and listeners will be reminded of Paramore’s Hayley Williams’ vocal style. Williams is Kashmir’s “total celebrity crush” and she looks to Bareilles and Owl City for inspiration musically and lyrically. Like Bareilles, Kashmir belts uplifting songs about self-esteem and positive vibes. It’s a conscious decision she’s made to incorporate the struggles she and her friends have dealt with while coming of age in 2015. “’Grin and Bear It’ is probably the most important song to me because that song was kind of about oppressed minorities and being bisexual and transgender; I think it was kind of getting that off my chest,” said Kashmir. “Like for some of my friends, they’re trans too. That song was kind of written for them to say that you’re not alone and basically, quoting from the song,’you can make it through this.’” Kashmir identifies as gender neutral, meaning as neither female or male. Her parents refer

Kashmir has written three of the five songs on her debut release and “Grin and Bear It” is dedicated to a friend who died, Leelah Alcorn. “She was one of my friends who killed herself and so I just wanted to write that for people like her, who thought they couldn’t do it,” Kashmir said. “I guess that’s where all my passion comes from, trying really to keep people alive.” She recorded her first album at Spitfire Studios, in Laurel Canyon, Calif., using the same microphone that Adele and Aerosmith used to record some of their music. Working with Huart, it was a treat that blew Kashmir away. “That’s honestly really, really cool,” she said, of the microphone. “I usually don’t get very excited about things, but that’s so cool to me.” Kashmir plays guitar, cello, the ukulele, a little viola and the piano. She also loves science and enjoys drawing. “I guess drawing is really important to me; it kind of lets out that stress that’s built up inside me,” she
said. “It’s what singing does for me too. It’s just a major stress release.” Her parents are supportive of whatever interests Kashmir pursues as long as she is having fun. “It’s all about being behind Kaedyn for what they want to do with their life and if that’s school or science that Kaedyn loves, science or music, it’s about supporting that,” said Derek Whitaker, her father, using the plural pronoun when speaking of Kashmir. Brenda Kashmir, her mother is just as proud. “It’s been really great and the ReverbNation thing is pretty cool,” said her mom. “Being a worldwide featured artist, when they just released the CD - she’s got a lot of attention.” Kashmir is signed with the label Play Like A Girl Records. She invites the community to her CD release party for “Sliding Doors” at 5 p.m., March 15, at Trattoria Amante, 131 Front St., Issaquah. There will be live performances by Roger Fisher, founding member of the band HEART; Roni Lee, of Venus and the Razorblades and the Runaways; Lynn Sorensen, of Bad Company and Spike and the Impalers and Baby Blonde, among others.

Shirley Jean Park
Shirley Jean Park passed away in Ellensburg, WA on March 4, 2015 at the age of 86. Shirley was born in Port Townsend, Washington on January 8, 1929, to Floyd and Nellie Cleveland. Prior to graduating from Renton High School, Shirley worked at the Bryn Mawr Drug Store soda fountain. In 1947 she married Don Rock in Renton,WA.They had two daughters, Cindy and Bonnie. Shirley went to work for Boeing in 1963, and then later worked as a purchasing agent for the King County Directors Association until she retired. After almost 27 years of marriage, Don Rock passed away in 1974. Shirley married Otis Park on August 29, 1988, and enjoyed many years with him until his passing in April of 2000. One of the many pleasures of Shirley’s life was sewing, which included embroidery, quilting, and making dolls, bunnies, and many other items. She also liked to play cards, bake cookies, and especially camp and hunt. What many people will remember her for were her Christmas parties, and she loved those parties. Another one of her many joys was going to the casino with her brother and friends. Shirley was a caring and loving mom and grandmother, often taking family members on camping trips and vacations, and always ready to babysit. Shirley is survived by her daughters Cindy Hunt (Wayne) and Bonnie Scott (Ron); her brother Bruce Cleveland (Linda); grandchildren Scott Rhodes (Jennifer), Andrea Wellborn (Trevor); step-grandchildren Nathaniel Scott, Theresa Scavera (Tony), Blaine Hunt (Tyra), and Gerald Hunt; 10 great grandchildren and many loving friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Harvey Cleveland, husbands Donald Rock and Otis Park, and great grandson Kenneth Rhodes. A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at the Renton Senior Center, 211 Burnett Avenue North, Renton, WA 98057. Inslee, Boeing mum on bill targeting big 777 tax break Sixteen months ago, Gov. Jay Inslee signed into law the largest tax break any state has ever given a private company. It extended a bunch of sweet incentives to the Boeing Co. that could save it up to $8.7 billion in tax payments to the state in the next 25 years. As hoped, the aerospace giant responded by agreeing to carry out the final assembly of the new generation of the 777 and its carbonfiber wings in Everett. Work is under way to prepare the site where this will happen. Today, that law is under legislative attack in Olympia, and the governor isn’t publicly defending it. Freshman state Rep. June Robinson, DEverett, is proposing to rewrite the law in ways that would slice the tax break in half immediately and force Boeing to pay millions — maybe tens of millions — of dollars in additional taxes this year. She’s introduced House Bill 2147, which would tie Boeing’s incentive to the number of workers it employs in Washington. If that workforce shrinks — and it has since the law was signed in November 2013 — the tax break will, too. Inslee is doing little to discourage the assault on this signature achievement of his first term, telling executives of Boeing and aerospace suppliers last month that he’s monitoring its progress. Neither he nor members of his administration will take part Friday [March 13], when the House Finance Committee holds a public hearing on Robinson’s bill. “At this point, I do not plan to testify,” Alex Pietsch, the state director of aerospace, wrote in an email. Asked why, he replied: “I’m afraid there isn’t anything to elaborate upon. As I’ve shared, I’m not working these bills.” Don’t expect anyone from Boeing to testify, either. The firm views the bill as “harmful and unnecessary,” but it’s not Boeing’s style to engage in hearings, even with $8.7 billion at stake. Robinson’s bill is the handiwork of the unions representing machinists and aerospace engineers. It stems from frustration that the 2013 law didn’t stop layoffs or prevent Boeing from shifting hundreds of jobs to other states without penalty. Washington headed for water warfare? California is in the midst of a fierce water war, a conflict that holds lessons for us in Washington state. In many ways, we are alike. Both of our states’ populations are growing and we have some of the world’s most prolific agriculture regions which require lots of water. Washington is served by a vast network of storage reservoirs that make up the Columbia River drainage. It stretches from the northern Canadian Rockies to as far south as Wyoming. On the other hand, California with its 38 million people has a series of reservoirs in the Sierra Nevada Mountains but draws heavily from the Colorado River. A 1922 compact governs the amount each state takes from Colorado River. A big problem is California, which gets two-thirds of its water from the Colorado, has taken more than its share. Now the State of Colorado wants to keep more of water for its population growth. Even wet years, there is barely enough water in California to nourish arid farmlands, supply thirsty cities and flush young salmon down its rivers to the sea. In early March, California’s hydrologic survey revealed that the Sierra Nevada snowpack is far below normal and 2015 could be the lowest in Don Brunell

Even if the Pacific Northwest could bail out California, this year would not be the year to do so. We too are short of snow in the Cascades. At the end of February, some snowpack monitoring stations near Mount Hood recorded no snow for the first time in at least 33 years. The bottom line is we also need water for our 1.8 million irrigated acres of farmland, of which three-fourths depends on surface water accumulated in reservoirs. Our state must protect its $49 billion food and agriculture industry which employs approximately 160,000 people and contributes 13 percent of the state’s economy. Our state’s population is growing as well; surpassing seven million people. Competing interests in our state must find ways to avert what is going on in California. It won’t be easy, but taking the battle to Congress, state capitols and courts only creates winners and losers. Solving this problems requires creative leaders and innovative thinkers with broad vision who are able to find common ground, compromise and new approaches. By staying neutral, Inslee might be trying to make amends with the unions, especially the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), some of whom are still seething at what they considered undue pressure put on them by the governor to approve a concession-laden labor contract to accompany the tax break. That vote landed the 777X. The governor will want their support in next year’s re-election campaign and staying out of this fray now should help in that pursuit. But if the governor won’t defend the tax break he signed, might enough lawmakers who voted for it in 2013 agree to rewrite it? This week’s hearing might offer clues to the answer. Shots were fired during an argument between two men at the Gurudwara Singh Sabha Sikh temple the afternoon of March 8. A large fight and shooting was reported at about 2 p.m. at the temple, 5200 Talbot Road S., Renton. The incident was still being investigated midweek, but it appeared there was a dispute between two men who are known to each other, according to Terri Vickers, a Police Department spokeswoman. Two shots were fired, no one was injured, and the people involved have been identified, she said. No clear victim or suspect had been established as of midweek. The investigation will determine whether the case will be sent to the prosecutor for filing of charges. SHOTGUN FIRED: A 34-year-old Renton man grabbed
a sawed-off shotgun from his backseat, loaded it and walked toward a house Feb. 15 on Shelton Avenue Northeast. He left, then returned a few minutes later and neighbors heard a loud bang. Officers found a broken living-room window but no one inside. Officers called a resident, who arrived minutes later with her two children. Her husband had rushed into the house to tell her to get out with the kids. The wife heard yelling from outside and then one or two gunshots. The suspect screamed that he was going to kill her husband. He also threatened to shoot the man’s wife and two children. He left. The couple strapped their children into their car seats, but he stayed behind in case the suspect, who was a friend of the couple’s, returned. The suspect was later found walking on Northeast 24th Street at about noon. He was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of felony assault. He had about $4,850 in cash.

The two men had argued at the home of the suspect, who was upset because his girlfriend had left him. ANGRY OVER TIRES: A customer at Sam’s Club on Grady Way became angry Feb. 16 when he was told he needed his wife’s membership card to buy tires. A manager was called in to explain the store’s policies but the 49-year-old Renton man responded he didn’t care about the store’s policies. He needed tires. He shoved the manager and kicked over a tire display. He threw a tire at the manager, hitting him in the chest, then did the same thing again. He told an officer he was really angry. He was told the manager wanted to press charges against him. He said he wanted to press charges against the manager for mental anguish. The officer explained that being rude or providing poor customer service wasn’t a crime but hitting someone with a tire was. A citation for fourth-degree assault was sent to Renton prosecutors for review. PEEPING TOM OR BURGLAR?: A 27-year-old Renton
woman ran from her bathroom Feb. 9 after she saw a hand pressed against the window trying to open it while she was taking a shower. Her husband found the man kneeling below the window, still trying to open it outside their apartment on Northeast Fifth Street. The screen was on the ground next to him. The suspect lunged at the husband when he asked him what he was doing and punched him in the face. The two men struggled, until the suspect fled. A K9 unit attempted to track the man. It’s unknown whether the man was trying to peak through the window or break in. VINTAGE GUNS STOLEN: Two vintage guns were stolen Feb. 14 from a gun shop on Wells Avenue South. The guns were British and Egyptian long guns from the World War I and II era. The British gun is valued at $425 and the Egyptian one at $300. The guns were on display on the sales floor. Dean A. Most ink tells a story. This especially holds true in the armed forces. For many years, warriors have inked their skin as way to commemorate the time in their lives when they stood prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice, dying for a flag, cause or country. This remains true today. The White River Valley Museum seeks submissions for “Service Ink: Veteran’s Tattoos and Their Stories,” an exhibit that recognizes veterans for their sacrifices and stories, and showcases the art of tattooing. According to Museum Director Patricia Cosgrove, the idea for the exhibit has been bouncing around the “file of tickler ideas” for a couple of years. “We put our heads together and thought this would be a good way to honor veterans and introduce some of the experiences that a veteran
might have had to those who aren’t veterans or in veteran families,” Cosgrove said. “For me that’s alien, it’s a whole new world I know nothing about it, yet I’m emotionally interested to learn about it. So it’s for us and also for those who lost loved ones and commemorated them with tattoos. The assault was broken up by a City of Renton employee, who was recognized by Mayor Denis Law during his State of the City address on March 4. Bob Sowards of the Community Services Department saw a struggle at the stand as he drove by early on the morning of Feb. 17 and decided to go back to investigate. After his arrival, Johnson fled Shad Johnson the scene. Sowards called the police and gave a description of the suspect and his vehicle to police. According to Law, the detective on the case believes the victim may have been killed if not for Soward’s actions. The case has been referred to the King County prosecuting attorney. The middle of March is a good time to give your lawn a spring feeding. You can assure a grass-roots movement
by raking the lawn first to remove dead grass, storm debris and leaves so the lawn food can fall more easily onto the soil.
Do not waste your money on a weed and feed product. The soil is too cold and many weeds are not yet actively growing. By encouraging the lawn to grow now it will crowd out newly emerging weeds. Got lots of moss in your lawn? There is nothing wrong with enjoying a moss lawn and making peace with Mother Nature. Moss stays green during the summer; it crowds out dandelions and other wind-blown weeds and is soft to walk upon. Another huge advantage of a moss lawn is that it does not need mowing.
Most lawns in the Northwest are part moss and part grass. The moss takes over in the winter when the soil is wet and the grass will dominate in the summer. Feeding the lawn in early spring helps the winter weary lawn to wake up and compete with the moss. Moss killing products are effective in the short run but you must change the soil conditions to keep the moss from coming back. This means improve the drainage, limb up trees to allow more sunlight, and add lime to make the soil less acidic.

You should not cut the stems but instead grab and pull off to the side so that you’ll take the entire stem and petiole of the rhubarb stalk. Rhubarb is ready to harvest when the stalks are 12 to 18 inches long. You should stop harvesting when the stalks that emerge become smaller – usually in late spring. Yes, the leaves of rhubarb plants are poisonous but then so are the leaves of many other edible plants. I like to cut off the large leaves from the stalk while still in the garden and use them as a weed blocking mulch around other plants.

DETERMINATION OF NON-SIGNIFICANCE Black River Pump Station Forebay Sediment Removal King County plans to remove about 2,900 cubic yards of sediment that has accumulated on the concrete forebay apron located immediately upstream of the Black River Pump Station. Sediment will be removed by dewatering the work area and excavating directly from the riverbed. Excavated material will be decanted in a temporary, water-tight facility on the south river bank. He or she will be patient enough to let a story develop, but will also be capable of executing an unreasonably quick turnaround, and will be impeccable in observing deadlines. And the Staff Writer will excel at crafting long-form features, though he or she will also be able to deliver impactful, thoroughly reported accounts in just 800 words. Since Seattle is an unusually competitive market, the Staff Writer will need to possess an ability to uncover stories that readers won’t find anywhere else. Second only to that is an insatiable desire to find a new angle on a well-trod story, revealing something new about a subject that other reporters might think is over and done with. She or he must be able to talk to people who don’t want to tell their story, or who maybe think they don’t have a story to tell. The right candidate will be smart enough to find the right sources and brave enough to ask the next, tougher question.
