Tacoma Bid Watch

Building demolitions, tide flats road repairs, and South 56th Street signage Article By Todd Matthews, Editor Photos Courtesy City of Tacoma The Tacoma Daily Index often publishes the City of Tacoma's calls for bids asking contractors to meet the City's needs on a range of supplies, services, and projects. Here is a short-list of some recent and notable calls for bids issued from Tacoma City Hall. First, the City is accepting bids to demolish three derelict and abandoned buildings in Tacoma. The first building — a 925-square-foot, 52-year-old singlefamily residence — is located at 1027 E. 60th St. The project budget is estimated at $12,000 to $16,000. The bid deadline expires at 11 a.m. on Fri., March 20. More information is available online at cityoftacoma.org. The second building — a 716-square-foot, 72-year-old single-family residence — is located at 6956 S. Stevens St. The project budget is estimated at $12,000 to $15,000. The bid deadline expires at 11 a.m. on Fri., March 20. More information is available online at cityoftacoma.org. The third building — a 1,382-squarefoot, 109-year-old single-family residence — is located at 2236 E. 32nd St. The project budget is estimated at $20,000. The bid deadline expires at 11 a.m. on Fri., March 20. More information is available online at cityoftacoma.org. The Tacoma Daily Index has closely followed demolitions related to derelict and abandoned buildings. For complete and comprehensive coverage of the issue, visit our Web site for the following articles: — Tacoma Bid Watch: 3 acres for sale, fire simulation training, and building demolition updates (Tacoma Daily Index, Jan. 22, 2015) — Tacoma Bid Watch: Foss Waterway Esplanade, building demolition, and arts funding (Tacoma Daily Index, Dec. 29, 2014) — Top Stories 2014: #6 — Dangerous Domains (Tacoma Daily Index, Dec. 23, 2014) — Dangerous Domains: A conversation with Tacoma building inspector Dan McConaughy (Tacoma Daily Index, Nov. 17, 2014) — City selects contractors to demolish 3 abandoned, derelict Tacoma buildings (Tacoma Daily Index, Nov. 12, 2014) — Bids are in to demolish 3 abandoned, derelict Tacoma buildings (Tacoma Daily Index, Oct. 6, 2014) — City seeks wrecking crews for 3 Tacoma buildings (Tacoma Daily Index, Sept. 16, 2014) — Tacoma picks contractor for 2 building demolitions (Tacoma Daily Index, May 27, 2014)

— City Hall News: Historic preservation, building demolitions, and Tacoma Water property sale (Tacoma Daily Index, April 25, 2014) — Partnership could develop former Hilltop 'Filthy 15' site (Tacoma Daily Index, March 11, 2014) Second, the City is accepting bids on a project to make roadway and sidewalk improvements to an area near East 11th Street and Portland Avenue East on the Port of Tacoma tide flats. Bid documents prepared by City staff show the project involves removing asphalt pavement, removing and replacing sidewalks, excavating roadways, constructing concrete curbs and gutters, and installing topsoil and wood chips. The project budget is estimated at $16,000. The bid deadline expires at 11 a.m. on Thurs., March 12. More information is available online at cityoftacoma.org. Incidentally, the project is located near the base of the west end of the century-old East 11th Street Bridge, which spans the Puyallup River and was closed last summer to all vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic for public safety concerns due to deteriorating joints, beams, and trusses (see "Tacoma's East 11th Street Bridge will close Friday," Tacoma Daily Index, July 15, 2014; and "City of Tacoma to close East 11th Street Puyallup River Bridge," Tacoma Daily Index, July 1, 2014). Finally, following up on an item reported earlier in the Tacoma Daily Index (see "Tacoma Bid Watch: Port of Tacoma Road, South 56th Street signage, and a billiard table," Tacoma Daily Index, March 3, 2015), the bid deadline is set to expire this week on a project to install City-supplied signs on existing posts along South 56th Street, replace posts where required, and return salvaged signs to the City, according to information on the City's Web site. The project budget is estimated at approximately $10,000 to $12,000. The bid deadline expires at 11 a.m. on Thurs.,

March 12. More information is available online at cityoftacoma.org. Earlier this year, the City awarded a contract to install a gateway entrance sign near the intersection of South 56th Street and South Orchard Street (see "Tacoma Bid Watch: Fire simulation training, ADA street improvements, and gateway signage," Tacoma Daily Index, Jan. 6, 2015). WSDOT: I-5 HOV project will close 20th Street East in Fife Posted online Mon., March 9 Image Courtesy Washington State Department of Transportation Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) officials will close a segment of 20th Street East in Fife to all traffic for two years beginning on Mon., March 9. During the two-year closure, crews working for WSDOT will build a new northbound Interstate 5 bridge over the Puyallup River, build a new northbound high-occupancy-vehicle lane, and make other improvements to Interstate 5 between Portland Avenue in Tacoma and the Port of Tacoma Road in Fife. The road closure is part of the Interstate 5 — Portland Avenue to Port of Tacoma Road — Northbound HOV project (see "WSDOT breaks ground on latest I-5 HOV project in Tacoma," Tacoma Daily Index, Feb. 18, 2015). Vehicles and bicyclists will be detoured while the road is closed.
