Awards ceremony ahead for Tacoma Green Infrastructure Challenge

Campaign aims to increase safety for Tacoma cyclists, pedestrians Images Courtesy City of Tacoma The City of Tacoma is launching a new campaign to raise awareness of pedestrians and cyclists on local roadways. This Lane is Your Lane, This Lane is My Lane aims to help all road users understand the rights and responsibilities that come with having access to the right of way, as well as serve to help clarify new safety features, such as sharrows and green bike lanes. According to City of Tacoma officials, a "Green Lane" is green-colored pavement that enhances the visibility of a bicycle lane in places where there is a potential for conflict between cyclists and motor vehicles. For those traveling in motor vehicles, green pavement reinforces priority to cyclists. For bicycling traffic, green lanes offer guidance on where to position themselves in the roadway, as well a reminder to ride cautiously as green lanes are present in areas where there is higher potential conflict between motorists and bicyclists. The Federal Highway Administration considers green pavement marking to be effective in increasing awareness of bike lanes, according to City officials. This Lane is Your Lane, This Lane is My Lane also seeks to raise awareness of being visible at night, pedestrian rights at intersections, and what

to do when encountering "sharrow" symbols. In Tacoma, new safety features, including green pavement markings, can be found along the north edge of Wright Park and at the Interstate 705 entrance to Stadium Way as part of 13 miles of new bikeways and pedestrian improvements citywide (see "Tacoma completes 13.1-mile roadway improvement project for cyclists, pedestrians," Tacoma Daily Index, Aug. 27, 2014). Posted online Weds., Feb. 25 The brightest design teams from around the Puget Sound region will showcase their ideas for a greener Tacoma during the first-ever Tacoma Green Infrastructure Challenge awards ceremony next week in downtown Tacoma, City of Tacoma officials announced Wednesday. Teams of local firms, sustainability committee members, and students from four universities will share their ideas to jurors, fellow competitors, and spectators before a winning team in each of three categories receives a $5,000 cash prize and trophy. The competition was launched late last year when local design and engineering firms were invited to form teams and develop concepts for up to three realworld sites sponsored by public entities in Tacoma. The City of Tacoma is sponsoring a green roadway in the South Tacoma Way business district; the Port of Tacoma is sponsoring an industrial redevelopment site; and Metro Parks Tacoma is sponsoring an urban redevelopment of the South End Recreation Area (SERA) Athletic Fields. The public is also invited to weigh in on each team's design by voting online at cityoftacoma.org until 5 p.m. on Thurs., March 5. The awards ceremony will be held on Thurs., March 5, between 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the University of Washington Tacoma (Philip Hall), located at 1918 Pacific Ave., in downtown Tacoma. Tickets for the awards ceremony are free to anyone attending the Vision2Action Sustainability Symposium earlier that day (or $10 each for non-attendees).
