Spaceworks Tacoma opens downtown co-working space Posted online Mon., Feb. 9 Image Courtesy Spaceworks Tacoma Do you want to be part of a vibrant community of creators and activate a long-vacant building on Pacific Avenue? If so, Spaceworks Tacoma officials want to hear from you. According to Spaceworks Tacoma — a joint initiative of the City of Tacoma and the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber that aims to activate empty storefronts and vacant spaces — a downtown Tacoma building that was once home to the Master Builders Association of Pierce County and Ticor Title Insurance Company will soon offer co-working spaces to artists, small-business owners, non-profit organizations, and other individuals pursuing creative endeavors. Private spaces range from 150 to 250 square feet and include 24/7 access, wireless Internet service, and Spaceworks Tacoma marketing and promotion. Common spaces include a shared kitchen, art sink, bike storage, shower, access to "gallery" space with art made by tenants, as well as a monthly Art Walk event organized and promoted by Spaceworks Tacoma. 10-Year action plan aims to improve Tacoma air quality City of Tacoma officials announced this week the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has adopted a 10-year action plan that aims to improve air quality and reduce unhealthy wood smoke pollution in the Tacoma/Pierce County Smoke Reduction Zone area. In 2009, the EPA declared the zone as a nonattainment area for air quality primarily due to smoke from wood burning stoves, which can cause health-related issues. Two years later, a task force was created to recommend strategies for reducing particulates in the atmosphere and to restore Tacoma as an attainment area. The task force concluded its work by offering the following recommendations: provide incentives to replace uncertified wood stoves; increase compliance with burn bans; ban uncertified wood stoves effective Sept. 30, 2015; and initiate a robust public education campaign. According to City officials, the EPA's acceptance of the 10-year action plan re-designates Tacoma as an attainment area for federal air quality standards. Grand opening in March for new Pierce County AIDS Foundation headquarters Posted online Weds., Feb. 11 Photo Courtesy Pierce County AIDS Foundation The Pierce County AIDS Foundation will celebrate the grand opening of its new Tacoma headquarters building (pictured) in March. A renovation of the nearly-10,000-square-foot building, located at 3009 S. 40th St., began in mid-October and was slated to include the buildout of six private interview rooms, meeting rooms for support groups and workshops, and a more spacious and comfortable waiting room, among many other amenities (see "Major renovation under way for new Pierce County AIDS Foundation headquarters," Tacoma Daily Index, Nov. 12, 2014). Improvements were also being made with energy efficiency and environmental standards in mind, such as natural and LED lighting, an energy efficient HV/AC system, and use of recycled materials. According to organization officials, the new building is 40 per cent larger than Pierce County AIDS Foundation's former facility, located at 3520 S. Pine St. Zenczak & Partners

Architects and BPCI / Accrete Construction were hired to complete the $1.6 million project. The Pierce County AIDS Foundation financed the purchase of the building and the majority of the funds needed for renovation through the Washington State Housing Finance Commission. A ribbon-cutting and grand opening ceremony will be held on Weds., March 18, between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., at 3009 S. 40th St., in Tacoma. The Pierce County AIDS Foundation serves over 700 clients affected by HIV/AIDS annually with case management and support services, and provides HIV awareness and prevention efforts throughout the South Sound, reaching thousands with prevention messages and confidential, no-cost HIV testing. Through education and service, the organization aims to prevent HIV infection, assist persons affected by HIV/AIDS, address related health problems, and combat discrimination.
