Feeding the needy Man faces Local activist fuels daily free meals program charges after ramming patrol car, fleeing police By LESLIE BROWN For The Beachcomber

Deputy-involved shooting will also be investigated By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer

A 24-year-old Vashon man faces criminal charges after ramming his truck into a patrol car, fleeing from police and breaking into a home over the weekend. Shots were fired by a sheriff’s deputy before the man fled in the Saturday evening incident. He was found hiding in an unoccupied house Sunday morning and was booked into King County Jail for investigation of felony assault, attempting to elude police and residential burglary. The man was scheduled to appear in court today. The Beachcomber does not name suspects until they have been formally charged. The deputy-involved shooting will also be investigated, and the deputy who fired the shots, Richard Ehlers, has been placed on administrative leave per King County policy. There were no injuries. According to King County court documents, the incident began at about 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, when the suspect’s mother SEE CHARGES, 16

Harmon Arroyo moved through the meeting hall at the Lutheran church like a man in his element, chatting amiably with several of the men and women eating platefuls of black-eyed peas, ham hocks and succotash. He rested a large hand on someone’s shoulder, leaned over another and cleared a plate, ambled toward the kitchen where the volunteer crew needed help fixing a drain in the sink. It was chilly in the dimly lit hall, and most of the diners were wrapped in coats. Arroyo wore a loose-fitting T-shirt and khaki shorts. One elderly man in a tattered ball cap grinned at Arroyo as he walked past. “Thank you very much. It was a wonderful meal.” Arroyo was quick to deflect the praise. The volunteers — on this particular night Sheila Brown, Judy Sarkisian, Alice Block, Jessica Lisovsky and JW Turner — were the ones who bought the food, prepared it and served it. Even so, Arroyo, more than anyone else, has become the face of one of Vashon’s most signifi-

A new program on Vashon is proving that an activity many people take for granted — plugging in headphones and listening to music — can make a big difference in the lives of the elderly. “They light up when they see it’s time for their music,” said Deborah Byington, the Life Enrichment Program coordinator at Vashon Community Care. “You can really see the change in expression on their faces.” This winter Byington has been overseeing a program to get residents at Vashon Community Care

(VCC) listening to personalized music, an activity that’s been shown to ease the symptoms of dementia and is believed by some to improve access to memories that seem otherwise unreachable. The care center is now collecting new and used iPods as well as iTunes gift cards for its Music & Memory program, and it will have a table at the Vashon Senior Center’s screening of “Alive Inside,” an award-winning documentary film about the program and the effects of music on memory in the elderly, at the Vashon Theatre on Tuesday. “Memory loss is a big issue for people on the island,” said Ava Apple, the senior center’s director. “We held a couple of forums back in September about it ... and were amazed at the turnout and hunger for knowledge around the topic. Vashon’s heritage association has purchased the historical home next door to its museum, closing on the sale last week for $383,000. The nonprofit plans to rent the home, the 1910 parsonage of the church the museum is now housed in, until eventually transforming it into a historical education center. “It was a cool coming together of something that was meant to be good for the island, said Deb Dammann, the president of the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association. “I’m very happy about it. The group was under contract to purchase the house last year for $450,000, but the sale fell through when it learned what repairs were needed there. The house was eventually listed at a lower price, $399,950, and the nonprofit negotiated a purchase for slightly less. “I think both parties felt this was a fair price when everything came together, Dammann said. The nonprofit raised about $160,000 for the purchase and secured a $225,000 mortgage. Dammann said the heritage association believes monthly rent will cover its mortgage payments and taxes, and it may eventually hold another fundraiser to retire the debt. “The sooner we do that, the sooner we can start using the building, she said. There will be an open house at the parsonage from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Misty Isle Farms, the 500-acre estate once owned by the late Tom Stewart, was put back on the market last month, listed with a high-end international real estate broker for $43 million. The central island property was first put up for sale in 2007, when Stewart moved his company, Services Group of America, to Arizona. Then priced at $125 million, it did not sell and was taken off the market for a time. Stewart died in a helicopter accident in 2010. The estate is now owned by Stewart’s family and company and was listed in mid-December with Realogics Sotheby’s International Realty, which has offices in Seattle, Bainbridge Island and Kent. Brad Vancour, the realtor handling the property, said that Sotheby’s will target high-net worth individuals and large international buyers who can afford such properties. Only qualified buyers will be able to see it. “At Sotheby’s International Realty we already deal with the who’s who that can afford such properties, Vancour said in an email. “We also have many qualified clients that seek such unique trophy properties. Misty Isle Farms is a sprawling estate that Stewart, a wealthy businessman who kept a cattle farm there, pieced together decades ago from dozens of parcels. At 525 acres, the property includes rolling pastures, 8 miles of trails, a 6,500-square-foot home and several other smaller homes and structures. It also has a driving range and putting green, horse stables, an indoor riding arena and a 2,200-foot landing strip with a helipad and hangar. Stewart also extensively landscaped the property, creating a private arboretum with more than 3,000 trees, hundreds of varieties of flowers and shrubs and a 3-acre man-made lake. In 2013, a group of islanders looked a the possibility of purchasing Misty Isle for farmland preservation and developing a multi-use site there. Representatives of the Vashon land trust, Vashon Island Growers Association, King County and PCC Farmland Trust were all in talks about the idea, but were ultimately asked by a representative of the owners to stop discussing it. Vancour declined to say why the property’s owners decided to put it back on the market now, but said, “It’s like any big property. You get to a point where it’s very expensive to maintain. No one is using it that much. In a press release from Sotheby’s, Dean Jones, president and CEO of the firm, suggested that the improving real estate market makes it a good time to try to sell Misty Isle. It was already promoted at a luxury properties showcase in Shanghai, and Sotheby’s created a website to advertise the estate at

assure you the Seattle metro area is very much on the map overseas. At the same time, this sort of property segment and price point is well-represented in popular ranch markets throughout California, Colorado or Texas. The parcels that make up Misty Isle, are mostly zoned as rural, Vancour said, meaning it would be difficult for a buyer to develop the site. King County also owns a farmland preservation easement on 208 acres there. While there could be opportunity for smaller development, Vancour said that’s not likely the direction a buyer would take. “Due to the economics of this property, it will probably be a buyer who will keep the property as is and maintain its beauty, he said. Ken Zaglin, who owns Vashon’s John L. Scott office and is familiar with Misty Isle, agreed. “At anywhere near the pricing that this property is currently at, there would be virtually no chance someone would buy it based on potential development rights, he said. A press release from Sotheby’s called the asking price $43 million a “relative deal. Zaglin said it would be tough to determine a fair price for the estate because it is so unique, but called $43 million “much more realistic than the former price of $125 million. Sotheby’s recently listed a 240-acre ranch outside Santa Barabara for $125 million, as well as Tom Cruise’s 300-acre retreat in the Rocky Mountains for $59 million. A 7,500acre ranch in Malaga, Wash., is currently for sale for $19.4 million, and a 150-acre Arabian horse ranch in Ellensburg is listed at $12.5 million. Emma Amiad, a buyer’s broker on Vashon, agreed that the new price is more realistic but said it could still be a challenge to find a buyer for Misty Isle. “I think the challenge is mostly what else is there you can get for that kind of money in the world, she said. “Why would someone in that price point be attracted to Vashon as opposed to buying an island in the Mediterranean or a waterfront chateau? Zaglin said he doesn’t think a sale is out of the question. “It may very well have an appeal for someone who has that breadth of monetary latitude, he said.

DID YOU KNOW? There is a whiter smile diet? Teeth darken over time due to pigments in the foods we eat. These pigments stay in the porosities of the teeth and absorb light causing teeth to appear darker. Teeth bleaching agents work by breaking down the chemical structure of these pigments which prevents them from absorbing light. The pigments in cigarette and cigar smoke, colas, red wine, coffee and black tea seem to be the main culprits. The park district needs us to support its levy

A newspaper’s dreams for the new year on Vashon

The organization is moving forward with a plan for success

It’s the beginning of January, the time of year when many of us look back at the past 12 months and reflect on what we’d like to see happen in the coming year. On Vashon, 2014 was a mixed bag. The year brought some positive things as motivated islanders continued to find ways to serve the community and worked to make Vashon a good place to live. For many, however, 2014 was also a difficult year, as several tragic deaths rocked the island. In the spirit of looking ahead, here are 10 things In the spirit of looking we at The Beachcomber ahead, here are 10 things would like to see happen we at The Beachcomber in 2015, some fanciful would like to see happen and far-fetched, some well within reach and a few in 2015. quite up in the air. 1. Several new doctors decide to hang their shingles on the island, providing new options for patients and accepting many insurance plans and Medicare. 2. The Mukai Farmhouse is secured by the Friends of Mukai group, which restores and revitalizes the historic site, while the land trust raises enough money to purchase the former Matsuda strawberry farm down the road. 3. After years of kicking the can down the road, state lawmakers approve new funding for the cash-strapped ferry system. Prices for ferry tickets plummet. 4. The Vashon Park District’s levy is renewed by voters who realize strong leadership will help the district change course and taking away its funding will only hurt islanders. 5. Misty Isle Farms, back on the market, is purchased by a wealthy investor who leases it out for use as affordable housing, community farming and a dog park. 6. Vashon Youth & Family Services secures the funding it needs to rebuild and even expand its mental health and prevention programs. 7. Kids and families embrace the Vashon School District’s new suicide prevention program, participating in trainings and growing a greater understanding of mental health issues. 8. There are no more deaths due to suicides or tragic accidents. 9. A popular new restaurant opens up in the former Nirvana storefront, complementing the current dining options. 10. K2 is purchased by a responsible marijuana company that quietly produces pot — but not pot candy — and donates half its proceeds to community causes.

The dawning of the new year brings with it some thoughtful consideration for the taxpayers of Vashon and Maury Islands as we approach an important decision regarding the Maintenance and Operations Levy for the Vashon Park District. The levy election is slated to run this year, and I write in support of the park district levy after a recent inspiring meeting with Elaine Ott, the district’s executive director, where the agenda was user group leadership participation in her preparation for the district’s fiveyear plan. My association with the Vashon Park District is as the Quartermaster Yacht Club representative for the Bruce Haulman Junior Sailing Program. The park district facilitates registration and administrative support, while the Quartermaster Yacht Club administers the sailing instruction. I have witnessed firsthand the many changes and challenges that have occurred at the district over the past several years, and I can honestly say that they are on their way back and moving forward with energy, sound financial footing and a plan for success. My meeting with Elaine left me encouraged and confident after learning of the park district’s accomplishments this past year. The BARC skate park shines with the addition of a skate bowl that regional skateboarders claim is one of the best in the Northwest. The 2015 budget includes a one-month extension to the pool season thanks to the enthusiastic efforts of the Friends of the Vashon Pool group. The Keeper’s Quarters at Point Robinson proudly boast a shiny new paint job, while the lighthouse is slated for a new roof this spring. Additional park district system improvements include an online lodging reservation system, a streamlined facility database, a newly designed website and a oneinch thick notebook containing the new Maintenance Management Plan. These improvements point to increased efficiencies and improved

Speak out in support of Amanda Knox and against legal corruption It’s been some time since Amanda Knox was in the headlines, but the West Seattle native’s struggle with the Italian legal system is not over yet. Knox’s supporters are now pushing for final justice to be served in Italy, where a young woman’s murder was mishandled by officials. A safety net comprised of constitutions, laws and treaties was signed and sealed decades ago by a well-intentioned global community. It was specifically designed to protect sovereign nations and first-world citizens in business and pleasure, but on occasion, unscrupulous public officials will abuse that sacred trust. The 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy, spawned a textbook example of such corruption when a few people and a few pieces of paper were enough to push Meredith’s grieving family, Italian student Raffaele Sollecito and American student Amanda Knox down the judicial rabbit hole. Amanda has gone through the looking glass, and the law is topsy-turvy. The prosecution,

Amanda continues to be used as a distraction to keep the public eye off Meredith’s real killer and his plea deal. IT’S YOUR HISTORY

George McCormick Unites the Island By Chris Austin

In the beginning of the twentieth century daily life on Vashon and Maury Island would be difficult to recognize today. Rather than a central business district surrounded by residents, the island was peppered with seaside communities isolated by water and a virtually impenetrable forest. In fact the interior of the island was so densely wooded that if you wanted to cross it, the easiest way was to take a steamship from the west side to Tacoma and then catch another steamship to the east side. It was the kind of arduous, complicated travel that WSDOT can only dream about. These disparate communities often had their own general store and post office which meant many folks never had to leave their small part of the island. As a result of this isolation people didn’t consider themselves residents of Vashon but rather a resident of Lisabeula or Colvos. This began to change as the depression of 1920s and 1930s began to depopulate the area. Where once we had 16 post offices it would be reduced to one. Where once we had various business centers it would be reduced to just a few. However what really gave a face to this sense of community was George McCormick and it all started on a bet with his neighbor, Theo Berry, owner of the Dockton Store. Mr McCormick wagered that he could walk the entire coastline of the island within twentyfour hours. George’s trek was officially started with a shot from Sheriff Finn Shattuck’s pistol. As he circumferenced the island he was urged along by hundreds of islanders all along the way. He hiked along through night and through day and through low tides and high tides - at times he was chest deep in water. And just ten minutes shy of twenty-one hours his gamble paid off. While George’s day-long journey didn’t unite everybody all by itself, it did give well-wishers across the island a common cause for celebration.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Animals

Rescuers do good work Baahaus Animal Rescue Group provides an important service to our rural community (“Couple creates a sanctuary for farm animals,” Dec. 31). We are neighbors to Baahaus and appreciate the sounds of what a real animal farm sounds like. Their sounds of daily feedings and rhythm of life help us stay grounded in what we hold most dear and reinforce the reasons for choosing to live on Vashon. Thanks for supporting their good work. — Ron Leaders

teach,” (Dec. 31). I love this island! These letters show that we are a diverse community with the freedom and security to express ourselves on important issues. I want to thank both Peter Thalhofer and Lily Robinthal for their comments. Peter seems to make the point (I totally agree) that we need to find meaning in our lives. How do we find meaning and purpose if we exist as a result of natural causes? It’s an important question that thinking people will ponder. We can come to different conclusions and hopefully learn from others, while being open to honing our own conclusions. Lily emphasizes (I also agree) that denying science (including evolution) is not in our best interest. Science helps us determine how things work — not why they work. My beliefs are based on the five sources of intuition, experience, authority, reason and faith. We may differ on which sources to emphasize, but we use all five. Our beliefs about evolution depend on how we marry science and religion. Can our experience and reason coexist with our intu-

Hunting

Vashon visitors appreciate island hospitality I would like to take a few minutes to offer a sincere and heartfelt thank you to the residents of Vashon and Maury Island. I belong to a very small group of blacktail deer hunters who have been treated so well by residents that words alone are insufficient to express our gratitude for you hosting us each year. We make a half dozen scouting trips to the island each summer and on many of those trips bring along our wives and kids, who enjoy spending the day in town shopping, and then we visit one of your wonderful eating establishments before heading home. I bring my family’s travel trailer over before the season and leave it through sometime around Thanksgiving, and our group will also plan family outings during times that the hunting season is not open.

We hunt public land as well as private land, but primarily focus on the private lands available to us. We hunt modern firearms season, but use both shotguns in more open areas and archery tackle where it is more congested. We have moved increasingly toward hunting from tree stands because doing so has increased our success rate, but as an unintended consequence, this also makes it so that we have less of a concern with where our shot will end up if we miss the deer we are shooting at because we are shooting down at a steep angle toward the ground. The fact that Island Center Forest is open for hunters who have not developed long-term relationships with island residents is something that I applaud. It allows access, and it is a great place to hunt blacktails. We have taken deer there and probably will in the future, but more than that, when hunting there, we meet others who are new to hunting Vashon and have a chance to offer them advice and encouragement. In closing I would like to once again try to convey in words the gratitude we feel toward the residents for hosting us each year. — John Hasty

Rabbi will share civil rights stories at forum honoring Dr. King By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer

For the 24th year in a row, a local event will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King on his birthday, Jan. 15. This year’s event, free to everyone, will feature Rabbi James Mirel, who will speak about the rabbis who marched with King and were heroes during the civil rights era. Emma Amiad, who has organized the previous events honoring King’s work, also organized this one. “In a community like ours that is so white and so middle class, it is easy for people to think that it (racism) is no longer a problem,” she said. “We have to work on it individually and as a society. We must remember what people paid in blood sweat and tears, and in some cases their lives, to be where we are now.” Over the years, Amiad has hosted Martin Luther King commemorations of all kinds, with some featuring music, others calling upon audience members to share their experiences with racism and others with a range of public speakers, from pastors to a state supreme court justice.

to an ongoing interfaith discussion to which Mirel was a part. Mirel has been a community leader for over 40 years. He is rabbi emeritus at Temple B’nai Torah in Bellevue and currently serves the Wood River Jewish Congregation in Sun Valley, Idaho. He will be joined by his wife, Julie Mirel, a renowned singer and catorial soloist, to share music of the civil rights era. He will also show film clips from that time. Amiad noted that Mirel is an exceptionally good speaker and that he also has been a bass player in a Klezmer band, a combination that she said bodes well for a meaningful evening. Amiad, who shares a birthday with King, said cake will be served, and donations will be accepted to the Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness; she is the president of that group’s board. Twenty-four years is a long time to host any event, but Amiad says she plans to keep on. “As long as I can do it, I will do it,” she said. “Some of us do not want anyone to forget those years.”

This year, Amiad said she chose to invite Mirel because of his personal involvement with the struggle for civil rights. While she has known him for 35 years, she said she only recently learned about this aspect of his work and of other rabbis’ involvement with the civil rights movement. “I had not paid attention,” she said. “I thought if I had not, then probably a lot of people had not.” She added that the civil Rabbi James Mirel rights movement was an interfaith one, with activists who were Christians, Jews and Buddhists, all of whom were vulnerable to being beaten and jailed. In 1961, Amiad said, King came to Seattle and spoke at Temple De Hirsh before a standing-room-only crowd. Many of the mainstream churches were unwilling to host the civil rights leader at that time, and this event gave birth

This year’s event will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Havurat Ee Shalom, 15401 Westside Hwy. SW.

Heron’s Nest marks 30 years with event at shop Heron’s Nest will celebrate its 30th anniversary Friday night with music, prizes activities, drinks and appetizers as a thank you to the island for supporting the nonprofit over the last three decades. Heron’s Nest began as the brainchild of Penny Grist, who suggested selling lower-priced items to augment gallery sales after VAA bought the historic Odd Fellows Hall building in 1985. Tom Bardeen and Director Cindy Metler raised public funds to renovate the building, while Grist and Steve Schlossman built out the Craft Gallery with lumber donated by Loren Sinner. Grist was hired to run the shop, which was only open on Saturdays. As more artists moved to the island and interest in local arts grew, so did the need for more space. In 1995, under the guidance of manager Brenda Moore, the Craft Gallery relocated to the Vashon Landing Building and was renamed Heron’s Nest. Debi Cekosh designed the new space, and many volunteers helped with construction running the shop. Three years later, Moore organized the move into the gallery’s current space. While the location has remained the same, the Heron’s Nest has gone through several changes. Managers Priscilla Schleigh, George Wright and Ellen Parker each added to the Nest, enhancing its look, adding more artists and new computer systems. Heron’s Nest is now open seven days a week and represents 125 part or full-time Vashon artists, while dedicated volunteers help with a number of gallery tasks.

Latin concert will benefit a cause in Africa World-renowned classical guitarist Enrique Henao will play a benefit concert on Friday night. The concert was organized by King Caramel’s Hedy Anderson and will be held at The Sugar Shack, the former Little House building and the new location of her business. Known for his soulful interpretations of flamenco and his rhythmically intense renditions of the music of Latin America, Heneo is a master of classical and jazz music. He has performed on concert stages in over 80 countries, garnering critical acclaim as one of the world’s finest guitarists. Henao has appeared on “The Mike Douglas Show” and “The Tonight Show” and performed for heads of state, including concerts at the White House and the Vatican.

Captivating audiences with his charismatic style and spirited solo interpretations, Henao has also performed during his 50-year career with a long list of music legends, including Charlie Parker, Sammy Davis Jr., Julio Iglesias, Johnny and June Carter Cash and Andres Segovia. Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit organization “A Barefoot Mile Foundation.” The foundation’s mission is to help bring sustainable health care, education and economic services to disadvantaged communities in rural Malawi, Africa. The concert’s proceeds will also help provide prosthetic surgery for a 12-year-old Malawi girl who lost her foot in a cooking fire when she was a toddler.

Local musician releases album at special concert

New storytelling event launches at Open Space

Local country-rock musician Allison Shirk will release her debut album “Break My Heart” during a special concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Red Bike. The album is the result of a Kickstarter campaign Shirk held last August, in which donors contributed a portion of the funds needed for recording. The campaign raised $9,269 in two weeks, with 112 Vashon residents — 65 percent of the total backers — contributing. Shirk funded the rest of the album, a project totaling $15,000 for the album’s recording, replication and distribution. “The album release party is my way to giving back to everyone who supported me,” Shirk said. “I can’t wait for everyone to hear the songs — both performed live and as recorded on the album. Making this album has been a dream come true for me.” Shirk will perform the album’s 11 songs cover to cover with the same musicians who appear on the album with her: islanders Todd Zimberg, Joe Panzetta, Jacob Bain, Mike Nichols, Paul Colwell, Jason Stacek, Sarah Christine, Sarah Howard and Richard Lipke, plus Seattle musicians Keith Lowe, Daniel Walker, Dave Harmonson and Bill Jones. Shirk noted that Kickstarter and other crowdfunding sites have become a critical tool for musicians to create and distribute music, as the music industry isn’t what it used to be. She said she needs the album to help open doors to playing venues in Seattle and for touring around the Northwest, Texas and California. For Shirk, songwriting comes from a place of story. She believes all her songs have elements of her own life in them, but that they also have a life of their own to which others can relate. Shirk also said proceeds from one song, “Monster,” will be donated to domestic violence agencies when it’s downloaded as a single. The song was written as an autobiographical account of her experience witnessing domestic violence. “I want to give the song back as a way to help people in need,” Shirk said. “One of the organizations I plan to

The Open Space for Arts & Community will launch a new program called “Lit Lounge” at 4 p.m. Sunday. The brainchild of islander Cara Briskman, Lit Lounge was inspired by similar events in other parts of the country and by programs like The Moth Radio Hour on NPR. Briskman worked with Maria Glanz at the Open Space to craft this storytelling program, hoping to honor the ancient art of storytelling as a way of gathering community, making sense of one’s life and sharing that with others. Islanders are invited to bring to the event a three- to five-minute story, with the theme of something being new. That something could be a new car, a new job, new love, new child, new look on life, new pair of shoes, new haircut, new experience — whatever “new” means to the storyteller. People who bring a story will be asked to drop their name in a hat at the door when they enter. Names will be drawn as the event unfolds. People whose names are drawn will have the chance to tell their stories on stage. Between 10 to 12 names will be drawn. More Lit Lounge installments will occur later in the spring, summer and fall, with different themes for each event. The first installment on Sunday will introduce islanders to the new format of storytelling. Event organizers hope that the storytelling may end up revealing new truths about islanders, their friends and neighbors. Doors will open at 3:30 p.m., and the show will begin at 4 p.m. Admission is $10, and tickets are on sale at Vashon Bookshop, www.brownpapertickets.com and at the door. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. All ages are welcome, but the event is not intended for children. Stories may include mature language or themes. Lit Lounge is supported in part by a grant from King County 4Culture.

She enlisted me with getting a focus group together to figure out how to get on-island services for survivors of domestic violence.” The collection of songs that Shirk chose for the album spans 10 years of songwriting. She said the album has been a long time coming, and that the time was not right until this year to make it all happen. “There is no way I could have done it without the support of this community and of Pete Welch, my partner,” Shirk added. “Pete has been there every step of the way. He sat through all the recording and mastering sessions and is a constant source of encouragement.” Tickets are $10 at the door, and all ages are welcome. Girls’ basketball team drops two in tough losses on the road By ADAM ATWELL For The Beachcomber

The Vashon High School girls’ basketball team took their two-game winning streak on a double-ferry trek to Whidbey Island to play the Coupeville Wolves on Dec. 29. The Wolves came out shooting, connecting on seven field goals in the first quarter to quickly establish a lead. Sienna Janetty sank several 3-point shots, while freshman Cassandra Hernandez had two great shots to pull the Pirates to within 1 point midway through the second quarter. A late rally by the Wolves, however, led to a 24-17 deficit at the half. Both teams turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, and Vashon again pulled within a point with 28 seconds left in the third quarter on shots by Hernandez, Natalie VanDevanter, and a nice move to the hoop by Eva Anderson, who drew

a foul and converted the free throw. Coupeville converted the last two shots, including a 3, to make it 32-26 after the third quarter. Vashon fought back in the fourth with buckets by Janetty, Kate Atwell, VanDevanter and another foul shot by Anderson. Back-to-back 3s by Janetty with two minutes left in the game brought the score within 3, but Coupeville again scored the final points of the quarter for a 44-37 win for the Wolves. Scoring for the Pirates was led by Sienna Janetty with 19. Natalie VanDevanter and Cassandra Hernandez both added 6; Anderson had 4 plus 6 rebounds, Atwell added 2 points plus 10 rebounds. Against the Washington High School Patriots on Friday, Jan. 2, Annika Hille had the hot hand early for the Pirates, scoring 15 points in the first half. Janetty added 13 to give the Pirates a 33-27 lead at the half. The Patriots adjusted

their defense in the third quarter, reducing Vashon’s lead to 1 point going into the final period. The Patriots aggressive defense came at the expense of two of their key players fouling out halfway through the fourth quarter. Vashon continued to lead in a closely fought contest until, with the score tied and 4.9 seconds on the clock, Washington sank two free throws to win the game 48-46, giving a particularly tough loss to the Pirates Scoring was led by Jannetty with 20 points and 7 rebounds, Hille 19 points, Anderson 4 points and 6 rebounds, Kai Li Scheer 2 points and VanDevanter and Melanie Stoffer each added 1 point. The girls play at home next at 6 p.m. today, Jan. 7, against Darrington High Scoool and at 7:15 p.m. Friday against Seattle Christian. — Adam Atwell is the father of a Pirate player.

Pirate hoopsters keep on winning trip was a culmination of several hundred group hours of fundraising efforts by the entire team. There’s no place like home, though, and the boys bounced back to their winning ways on Jan. 3 against St. Michael’s University School of British Columbia. The first half ended with a slim 4-point lead for the Pirates, but they came out fast and furious in the third and fourth quarters and doubled up the Canadians, ending with a final score of 52-26. The team was pleased to have a former Pirate, Zach Andrus, back in the gym. He is an assistant coach for the St. Michael’s team. Scoring totals for that game were Norton 17, Yates 11, Symbol 8, Schoenberg 5, Tillman 4, May-Power 2, Forest 2 and Stewart 1. The Pirates play at home next at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, and Tuesday, Jan. 20.

The Pirate boys’ basketball team travelled to Phoenix Dec. 26 to 31 to participate in the Cactus Jam high school tournament. Teams from all over the United States were in the field. The Pirates won their opener against Dimond High School of Anchorage and then took down local power, Thunderbird High School from Phoenix. Both these schools are much larger than Vashon, so the victories were hard fought. Due to the Pirates’ bracket being short one leg, the team had to play Dimond again for the tournament championship. The final game was an emotional and exhaustive saga in itself and ended in somewhat bizarre fashion, in overtime, with the other team having scored 1 more point than the Pirates. Jessie Norton and Sam Yates were both named to the All-Tournament team. The

Grapplers continue on a winning roll at two tough tournaments Pirate wrestlers are on par with teams from larger schools By CHERYL PRUETT For The Beachcomber

The Vashon Pirate wrestlers racked up another successful week, performing well at their own Rock Tournament and the massive Everett Classic Tournament. Proving that you can do more with less, a small group of quality wrestlers are making a big splash at every event. The 26th annual Rock Tournament on Dec. 30 saw 15 teams from around the state converge on the high school gym for the full-day event. Vashon entered 14 wrestlers, both JV and varsity, and emerged in ninth place, within 2 points of both the top 1A schools in the state. Coach Anders Blomgren noted that this is exactly where he wanted to see the team. Being able to closely match up with the top schools in the 1A classification bodes well for a good run at the state title. Taking medals for the Pirates were Chase Wickman, champion; Luke Larson, second; Chester Pruett, Logan Nelson and Joe Coller, all third. Franklin Easton rounded out the field in fifth place. Matches of the day went to Nelson, who dropped a heartbreaker to Kylar Prante of Montesano, 1-0. It was a six-minute brawl of two evenly matched wrestlers. Nelson had won the first match-up of the season in midDecember, and when these two go at it, it is always electric. Larson, a freshman, made it to the finals, and though lost the contest, wrestled a brilliant match against a more experienced wrestler. At the Everett Classic on Jan. 3, the Vashon team put together another stellar day. There were 26 teams, most from much larger schools, and over 500 wrestlers. The Pirates entered only seven varsity wrestlers, and they Special for Jan. 7th Jan. 10th

Freshman Hunter Burger, in the 126-pound weight class, competes en route to a win at the Everett Classic. ended the day with an amazing ninth-place finish. Of the seven, five finished in the medals, and the other two — Coller and Easton — wrestled well, earned valuable team points and finished just one match away from the medal round. Vashon had two champions on the day, with Wickman and Larson continuing to roll their way through brackets like bowling balls. Both of them were absolutely dominant in all four of their matches. Taking third were juniors Shane Williams and Nelson. Chester Pruett rounded out

the group, taking fifth. Vashon continued its dominance on the junior varsity side of the tournament, where the Pirates had 11 wrestlers. Of those, five emerged as champions, each winning three matches. Preston Petersen, Hunter Burger, Connor Hoisington, Alyx Arteaga and Clyde Pruett all left with first-place medals. Matches of note go to several wrestlers, including Clyde Pruett, who took to the mat for the first time since sidelined with injuries last February. He was dominant throughout the day, and coach Per Lars Blomgren noted that his first match was the most moving JV match he had ever watched. Burger, a freshman, strung together three great matches, the first two nail-bitingly close. Then he closed it out strong with an early pin for the win in the third match. Sophomore Cori Williams had a good day, dropping his first then rebounding with two resounding wins. Rodolfo Flores also notched two wins, and getting his first win as a Pirate was freshman Ben Angelacos. Vashon’s resiliency is noteworthy, with the theme of the year seeming to be reduce, reuse and re-wrestle. They are doing more with fewer grapplers than at any time in recent memory. The team is still missing Bryce Hoisington, who is scheduled to return in time for the playoff run. The team’s next action will be Jan. 15 and 16, backto-back home dual matches. On Thursday the team will take on Nisqually League rival Bellevue Christian, and on Friday, the new regional competition, Klahowya. Friday will be senior night and special recognition for the Rockbusters junior wrestling group. On Jan. 17, the team will travel to the Rainier Tournament, which is always a preview of the upcoming state competition. — Cheryl Pruett is the mother of two Pirate wrestlers.

called police from an apartment near Vashon town to report that the two of them had been in a verbal argument. The woman said her son was “out of control” and “having a nervous breakdown” and that she was concerned for the welfare of him and others. He left the apartment before police arrived, and reportedly rammed his pickup truck into at least one car in the apartment complex before leaving. According to DB Gates, a spokeswoman for the King County Sheriff’s Office, the

police received several more calls about the same man that evening, with people reporting that he had been involved in road rage incidents, threats and vandalism. Ehlers, the sheriff’s deputy, located the suspect driving on Windmill Road in Dockton at about 6:45 p.m., and after he refused to stop, there was a short pursuit. He eventually pulled over, and as Ehlers was getting out of his car, the suspect rammed the patrol car with his pickup three times, knocking Ehlers off balance. Ehlers then fired several shots, according to Gates. Gates did not yet know if the deputy fired at the suspect or his truck, but no one was hit. Ehlers’ patrol car was not drivable, and the suspect fled, prompting an overnight

manhunt by the sheriff’s office. Several sheriff ’s deputies who live on Vashon as well as some who were on duty in White Center and Burien were called in to help search for the man, and a helicopter aided in the search that evening until the weather turned. The sheriff’s office posted an alert about the incident on Twitter and asked the public to call 911 if the suspect’s red Ford pickup truck was seen. After fleeing, the suspect broke into an unoccupied home on the 24600 block of Dockton Road SW on Maury Island. According to Gates, a detective following leads from the public located him there at about 4:30 a.m. on Sunday. He again tried to flee on foot but was tasered and arrested. According to court documents, the man

said after he was arrested that he rammed the patrol car because “I did not want to go to jail.” The man also spent time in jail last month. According to the King County Jail website, he was booked on Dec. 24 for investigation of assault and released on Dec. 26 when he posted $10,000 bail. Dan Donohoe, a spokesman for the King County Prosecutor’s Office, said the sheriff’s office is still investigating that incident and the suspect has not been charged. The suspect’s bail was set this week at $50,000. He was scheduled to appear in court today, Jan. 7, which is also the deadline for the prosecutor’s office to decide on charges. stayed and asked questions for a long time.” Around that same time, VCC became certified in the Music & Memory program, enabling it to offer its residents iPods to listen to music they enjoy or that is meaningful for them. “It’s really something to watch your loved one and know that they are enjoying … something,” said Martha Woodard, whose mother Kathleen Haygood, 91, participates in the program. “Music was always very important to Mom.” Cara Aguilera, VCC’s activities director, said that she and several staff members saw the documentary “Alive Inside” at a training session and wanted to give the Music & Memory program a try. Coincidentally, it was around this time that VCC received a call from the Lucky Seven Foundation, which offered to pay the $1,000 certification fee for the program. Members of the foundation’s board had also seen the film and wanted to help get the program started in several Seattle-area care facilities. Aguilera and several staff members participated in the

training process, and in November VCC became one of 15 long-term care facilities in Washington to be certified in the Music & Memory program. Byington has been primarily responsible for implementing the program and has been working with most of the residents in the skilled nursing area, including Haygood and Lilah Hook, 90. “Lilah lost her words completely about six months ago, but she’ll respond to the music,” Byington said. “You can see her foot tapping sometimes, and she’ll relax. It really seems to comfort her.” Byington said she often uses the iPods and personalized music playlists for Hook and several other residents at mealtimes as it seems to keep them alert and more interested in eating. Woodard credits the music program with helping her mother bounce back from a fall she suffered several months ago. “She had stopped talking. But since they started the music with her, she’s trying to talk again, and she’s more responsive,” she said. “Music is the key. It’s been a real force of communication through the whole process.” Some of the benefits that listening to personalized music has been reported to have in people with dementia include decreased agitation, increased alertness, increased engage-

ment with caregivers and family members, increased verbal and non-verbal communication and even a decrease in the need for psychotropic drugs to treat behavioral and psychiatric issues. While scientific studies are inconclusive as to whether music can actually improve memory function in patients with dementia, they do support many of these behavioral findings. In 2013, Wisconsin launched a statewide initiative enabling 100 nursing homes to become certified in the Music & Memory program as part of a broader effort to decrease the use of antipsychotic drugs in those facilities. Within a year, the antipsychotic prescription rate had dropped by 3 percent across the state, with officials attributing much of the credit to the music program. In fact, officials were so impressed with the positive impact they observed in the facilities where the program had been implemented that they expanded funding for an additional 150 facilities to implement the program. Joshua Grill, PhD, director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Treatment Development Program at the University of California, Los Angeles, Center for Alzheimer’s Disease Research, has written that music has an ability to activate the brain uniquely, in several different areas and in different ways. This makes it likely that some or all of these areas are spared from the damage done by the degenerative processes that most often affect the areas of the brain responsible for memory and language. Studies have also shown that music can activate pleasure and reward centers in the brain, lending further support to its positive impact, regardless of whether there is any significant change in communication or engagement. The film “Alive Inside” follows Dan Cohen, a social worker from New York who founded Music & Memory, a nonprofit organization devoted to bringing music to those suffering from dementia-related memory loss, and chronicles the experiences of people all over the country who have seemingly been revitalized and reconnected to the world around them through listening to music. Cohen began the program after considering his own future — if someday he were to end up in a nursing home, he hoped that he would have a way to continue to listen to the ’60s music that he loved. After hearing a news story about the prevalence of iPods, he came up with the idea to take iPods into nursing homes so that residents could listen to music that they enjoyed. He tested a program of creating personal playlists for residents of several long-term care facilities in New York, which yielded positive feedback from residents, staff and family members. He started the Music & Memory nonprofit in 2010 with an eye to expanding the program to reach as many facilities as possible throughout North America. Apple said she was inspired to bring the film about Cohen to Vashon, even before she knew VCC was beginning the Music & Memory program. “I watched the trailer and got choked up,” she said. At VCC, staff and residents’ family members now put together music playlists that are personalized for each participant in the program. “We give the families, and residents if they’re capable, a questionnaire about music they like, genres, artists, or even specific albums or CDs if they can name them,” Byington said. At the moment, VCC has enough iPods for its 30 skilled nursing residents, but staff would like to expand the program to assisted living residents as well as adult day program participants. All donations received at the documentary screening will go to expanding the program and building the music library. Apple, for her part, is hoping for a good turnout not only to support the VCC program, but also the senior center. The documentary’s distributor initially asked for $700 to show the film on Vashon, but eventually agreed to $350. “Most importantly, we are bringing the film as a service to the community. But it was very expensive (for us), so hopefully we’ll be able to recoup at least some of the cost,” she said. “We’re very excited. This is the first GreenTech night that the Senior Center has hosted,” Apple added. “Hopefully it’s the first of many.” “Alive Inside” will show at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Vashon Theatre. Tickets cost $9, with all proceeds going to the Vashon Senior Center. Gently used or new iPods and iTunes gift cards may be donated to VCC’s Music & Memory program at the screening or at the care center.

Without fail for the last two and a half years — save for one day this summer when he was in the hospital following a car accident — he’s been the point man on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights. He is paid for this work, though not much. He does it, he says, because he loves Vashon and believes deeply in community. “I learned about the communion of meals while working at the Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation. That’s where I discovered the meaning of breaking bread,” Arroyo said, recalling his days as an environmental sciences and reading teacher on the reservation. He’s impressed by what Vashon has accomplished, an effort made possible by some 600 volunteers, considerable organization and the collaboration of both the Vashon Social Services Network and the faith community. Eight thousand meals a year are served. “No one goes hungry on this island,” he said. Vashon’s meals program started several years ago at the Church of the Holy Spirit, a one-night-a-week affair hosted every Wednesday by the Episcopal church and staffed by volunteers from several congregations. It was different in those days, recalled Nancy Vanderpool, volunteer caseworker for the Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness. The Wednesday night dinners were considered community meals, drawing a mixed crowd of elderly folks, low-income families and homeless people.

operations on the beaches of Pelelliu and Anguar prior to the amphibious landing on these islands. During the war, his ship stopped in Port Angeles, where he met his future wife, Helen. They moved to Seattle where Ralph worked on the waterfront for many years. He was a manager at Pope and Talbot Steamship Company, Foss Launch and Tug Company and Olympic Steamship Company (Salmon Terminals). He loved ships and small boats and just being on the water. He obtained his USCG Master License and spent summers taking his family and friends boating to the San Juan Islands, the Canadian Gulf Islands and north as far as Princess Louisa Inlet. In retirement, Ralph and Helen built a house on Vashon Island. Ralph did much of the work on this house and he had a large workshop in the basement where he also built a working scale model of a steam locomotive, of which he was quite proud. Ralph also was a woodcarver and came from a Swiss family of woodcarvers. He carved panels depicting various Bible stories on the stairway up to the Burton Church on Vashon Island. He also made much of the furniture in his home. Ralph loved to ski and continued to find snow until he was in his 80’s. Ralph and Helen were happily married for 56 years and travelled extensively until her death in 2000. They had 2 children, Ralene Walls (Burton) and Chris Staehli (Molly). Ralph is also survived by his grandchildren Mike Hurt (Susan), Tanya Tobler (Reto), Preston Walls (Ashleigh), Annie Gartner (Nick), Lisa Reasner (Michael), Michael Kledzik); and Ralph has 9 great grandchildren. After the death of Helen, Ralph met Sharon on a Caribbean cruise. They were happily married for 11 years and he continued to travel with Sharon to Alaska, Europe, South America and Norway until very recently. He had just renewed his passport in preparation for another trip when Ralph passed away on December 18, 2014. Sharon was a very enthusiastic travel companion for Ralph and together they amazed their family with the adventures they achieved. On their last major trip, they cruised the fjords of Norway in a coastal freighter while Ralph was confined to a wheelchair and had a number of health problems. We will remember Ralph as having an incredible zest for life. A celebration of Ralph’s life for friends and family is planned for January. If you would like to attend, please contact a family member for details. A Shining Star on Vashon Island for 31 years! Available for Adoption Angel, born 2011 is a quiet cat who can go with the flow. She was fostered in a home with kids and a dog and another cat. She was great with the kids and the dog but she was not so great with the other cat. Angel is looking for an indoor only home. Because she is white, she has a tendency to develop skin cancer on her ears. She is very content to rest on her chair and be adored. She has excellent house manners. Angel came to VIPP on 12/11/14. Danny Boy, born 2003 came to vipp when his beloved owners moved to assisted living and could not take them along. Danny boy is extremely sweet and laid back. He seems to cope very well with new situations. He lived with another cat but they didn’t particularly get along. The pipes, the pipes are calling from glen to glen to find this danny boy a new home. Danny boy came to VIPP on 12-6-14.

Next month is Deigo’s 7th birthday and all he wants is a new home and someone to love him as much as his previous owner did. Diego’s lifelong owner quite simply adored him‌ and he took diego with him everywhere he went. But when that owner recently died, diego was suddenly alone in the world. Diego loves to love and will be a faithful companion, right by your side when you walk and politely snuggled up to you on the couch. He loves to go on car rides and enjoys other dogs and people – though he can be a bit shy in higher energy environments so a child free home is best. Please contact amy if you would like to meet this gentle soul and truly special boy. Emailamycarey1430@gmail.com phone 206-755-3981.
