KENT’S RECORD-BREAKING DRIVE Businesses respond with hefty donations to the Kent Food Bank BY STEVE HUNTER shunter@kentreporter.com
Businesses, churches, schools and other groups blew away the goals this year for food and cash
donations to the Kent Food Bank during the fourth annual Kent Turkey Challenge. The friendly competition raised 10,820 pounds of canned food and $22,418, said Katie Brown, marketing director for Torklift Central, which organizes the drive to provide Thanksgiving meals for people who come to the Food
Bank. Sixty-six businesses participated in the challenge that started in early October. Organizers set goals this year of 4,000 pounds of food and $17,000 after raising 2,784 pounds of food and $9,978 in 2013. [ more DRIVE page 2 ]

Kent has its landmark district BY MARK KLAAS mklaas@kentreporter.com
A historic Kent neighborhood has become a registered landmark, the first of its kind in South King County. The King County Landmarks Commission unanimously approved the Mill Creek Neighborhood Association’s nomination for official landmark designation at a Nov. 20 public hearing at the
Kent Senior Activity Center. The Kent Historical Museum and Mill Creek Neighborhood Council have been working with city and county officials to complete the steps necessary to designate a concentrated, lower East Hill area of historic homes as a registered King County Landmark District. A surprised Eric Hannon enters the ShoWare Center as the venue’s two-millionth guest last Friday night. ROSS COYLE, Kent Reporter
With a showering of confetti, horns and a special greeting from Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke, the ShoWare Center welcomed a special guest. Eric Hannon became the two-millionth ShoWare guest last Friday night. The 38-year-old West Hill
resident, who works at CDK Digital Marketing in Seattle, knew that the ShoWare Center was nearing its two-million mark but didn’t expect it would be him. He and his wife arrived later than usual for the Seattle Thunderbirds game and thought that the landmark guest had already arrived. [ more GUEST page 8 ]

Torklift stepped up to fill that gap for us and each year it has grown and just made our holiday distribution exceptional. “The families that are receiving the food are overjoyed when they know they are receiving a turkey and all of the fixings they need to have a holiday meal with their family and friends.” People showed up on Tuesday at the Food Bank for the distribution of the holiday food.
AND COMMUNITY SERVICES
“We estimate more than 1,000 people will come and we will be able to serve all of them,” Choate said. Kay said the people of Kent were very giving of food and cash this year. “I think it’s a picture of the community coming together,” he said. “When you have a common goal and a unified effort that’s what you end up with. I think the volume of donations are a great representative of the heart of this community and the people that contributed.” The Seattle/Tacoma KOA campground supported the
challenge by asking travelers who stayed at the Kent site to donate. Visitors were greeted with a Turkey Challenge donation box and a thermostat graph that tracked the KOA’s goals. “A lot of us take for granted being able to sit around the table and have a nice meal,” Kay said. “The people that come here it’s so many stories from cancer to mental illness to a lost job or whatever. There’s hundreds of reasons why people need help at different times. To have the community reach out and make a difference like this is wonderful.”

Kent Police arrived and funeral home officials came later to recover the body at the family’s request, according to charging papers. But funeral home staff refused to take the body because of its bad condition and contacted the King County Medical Examiner’s Office. Adult Protective Services, a division of the state Department of Social and Health Services, initially investigated the case and reported the autopsy showed Adriana Hondolero was in an adult diaper completely soiled and filled with feces. The woman had significant bedsores and weighed just 63 pounds at the time of her death.

Question of the week:
Democrats are trying to sort out what went wrong in the election and why the presence of Initiative 594 on the ballot didn’t motivate more of their voters to turn out. Party leaders all along thought the popular measure requiring background checks be conducted on buyers of guns online and through private sales would spur some of those prone to skipping midterm elections to participate. They believed a small boost of proDemocrat voters in just the right places could swing a close race and maybe upend a targeted Republican. It didn’t play out that way. Democrats lost seats in both chambers – sometimes in communities where the measure was passing handily. Republicans picked up one seat in the Senate in south King County and four in the House, deposing three incumbent Democrats in the process. Those seats are in districts covering swaths of Pierce, Thurston, Clark, Mason and Kitsap counties. Initiative 594 is passing in all those counties, except Mason, according to data assembled thus far by initiative supporters. Precinct-by-precinct details won’t be available until next month when election results are certified. “I don’t think it hurt us but I don’t think it helped us to the degree that we thought it would,” admitted Adam Bartz, executive director of the Senate Democratic Campaign Committee. One explanation is that in spite of polls detailing the measure’s popularity with voters, only a handful of Democrats associated themselves with the initiative. Only a few were like Sen. Marko Liias, D-Everett, who actively campaigned for it and went on to win with 54.5 percent. Most Democratic candidates steered clear of the measure as best they could. They feared any overt demonstration of support would trigger a reaction from the NRA like in 1994 when the national gun rights group helped defeat Democrats who endorsed an assault weapons ban. The NRA flexed its muscles again three years later by helping upend a statewide gun control-related initiative. Rep. Sam Hunt, D-Olympia, chairman of the House Democratic Campaign Committee, said he didn’t view I-594 as a “positive tool” and knew Democratic candidates avoided using it because of what the NRA did in 1994. Yet Hunt didn’t think it would have made a difference had they embraced it more strongly. [ more CORNFIELD page 6 ]

A personal attack forum? While I found the recent article about Mayor Suzette Cooke’s condo dispute to be in poor taste due to the personal nature of the story, I understand the reality that our elected officials are subject to public scrutiny. However, I was shocked to turn the page and see the vindictive letter to the editor by Susan St. Clair, the very same person interviewed for the story and in dispute with the mayor. It is obvious that Ms. St. Clair has an axe to grind with the mayor, which may or may not be justified. It is not for me to say. However, given this dispute I don’t think Ms. St. Clair is the most impartial judge of whether the mayor has the “right stuff ” to do a good job or comment on whether she deserves a raise. By giving Ms. St. Clair so much space to air her grievances it would seem that the Kent Reporter is serving to advance her slandering campaign against Mayor Cooke. Was it your intent to allow your paper to be used as a personal attack forum? I certainly hope not. – Diane Javelli
City’s answer: keep digging I received a response from a City Councilmember who wanted to correct me on some of my points about the financial bottomless pit that is the ShoWare Center.
Letters policy The Kent Reporter welcomes letters to the editor on any subject. Letters must include a name, address and daytime phone number for verification purposes. Letters may be edited for length. Letters should be no more than 250 words in length. Submissions may be printed both in the paper and electronically. Deadline for letters to be considered for publication is 2 p.m. Tuesday. The councilmember pointed out that Moody’s had upgraded the city’s financial score after having downgraded the city’s financial health twice. Point taken. Our rating is still not stellar. Also, the city is seeking repairs on the ice plant from the original contractor. Good. He went on to explain the council’s bottom line for continuing to subsidize ShoWare to the tune of at least $500,000 (and as high as $750,000) of our tax dollars each year for many years to come: 1, the contract with the Thunderbirds that would be costly to cancel and 2, the mortgage on the building. I’m not a lawyer, but there are always legal options when a person, company or city has unsustainable debt. Is the cost to cancel the Thunderbirds more than $500,000 or more than a million – but less than half a million a year for the next decade? Couldn’t the city sell the building to help pay off
the mortgage? What’s the cost/ benefit analysis on these or other options that would stop the bleeding? The idea of digging oneself further and further into debt doesn’t seem wise. How hard have the city attorneys worked to propose a new plan to get taxpayers out from under this situation? It may not be a pretty solution or one that downtown businesses would like, but a viable one that gets ShoWare off the books sooner rather than later. I’m not anti-business as some have suggested, but it’s naive to ignore the Chamber of Commerce’s influence on city officials. Taxpayers have no influence even remotely as persuasive. We have the vote and the press – and three minutes to speak in front of the council each month. The rationale that it’s terrific to have our own city arena in spite of the cost is irresponsible. The original City Councilmembers who voted for this albatross did not look very hard at the statistics for ventures like this for a city our size and the prospective draw from outlying areas. Some advisor along the way must have advised the council about the very real financial risks. Recessions and depressions are consistent events in our financial history. Why did those council members not use history as a guide or a caution? Why are current councilmembers going along with this fiasco today? All the talk is about why we should support this yearly half-million-dollar [ more LETTERS page 6 ]

Those noncontributing homes have either been remodeled to the point where they no longer have original features or have moved into the district from different neighborhoods, she said. past. Some homes are up to 100 years old, according to Nancy Simpson, president of the Greater Kent Historical Society. Bersaas added that the historic district boundary is malleable over time and can be amended to include others who would like to be included in the historic district. The move to designate and preserve the district as a historic landmark is important to the city’s heritage, project leaders said. “It’s an acknowledgement, more than anything, on the part of city and the community that their history is worth preserving, said Julie Koler, preservation officer for the King County Historic Preservation Program. Koler said the district represents of part of Kent’s history and paints a community’s social and economic picture throughout
the first six decades of the 20th century. Such landmark designation has its benefits, project leaders said. Homeowners can access grants, loans and tax-abatement programs to renovate and preserve their properties. Owners also can pursue materials and gain assistance from architects and those who deal with historic preservation. What’s left for the neighborhood group is the formalities of paying the nomination application fee and establishing specific design guidelines. City officials welcome the district and hope other historic neighborhoods will follow suit. “We really do have a great city and a great core of historic downtown that’s still intact, said Toni Azzola, the city’s Neighborhood Program coordinator, who has worked closely with the groups on the project.
[ LETTERS from page 5 ] deficit and set money aside to fund it. Crazy talk. City government cannot let civic pride overrule common sense. How much of the taxpayers’ money is too much just to keep this vain endeavor going on for decades? The building will age and need additional revenue for upkeep. SMG is owed money for loans it extended to the city to keep Kent stuck on stupid. This facility may never be profitable. The attendance records have never supported the idea that there were enough people consistently interested in spending their money at ShoWare events. It’s like polo: not many people can afford to participate and the rest just aren’t interested. – Sandra Gill

Man with common sense I would like to nominate letter writer Paul Nickelson to a citizens advisory position to help the city planners with a new proposal for a police building. My letter of a couple weeks ago was obviously incomplete, as he pointed out the missing architect and design fees necessary for a commercial building project. However, his conclusion is the same as mine: over $650/square foot is too much. Mr. Nickelson seems to have experience in this area, along with some common sense. If the leadership of our city presents the voters of Kent a reasonable, affordable facility proposal, we will pass it. – Michael Weros

Kentridge water polo club seeks higher status
EVERETT EDGES THUNDERBIRDS IN SHOOTOUT The Everett Silvertips defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-2 in a shootout Saturday night at the ShoWare Center. It was the eighth overtime game of the Western Hockey League season for Seattle, now 9-11-2-2 and four points back of the Spokane Chiefs in the U.S. Division. Everett is 15-4-2-1 on the season and leads the division. Taran Kozun got the start in the second night of a back-to-back. The 20-year-old stopped 29 of 31 shots but came away with the shootout loss. Seattle plays Friday at Everett and returns home at 7:05 p.m. Saturday against Kootenay and 5:05 p.m. Sunday against Spokane.

Despite placing eighth among water polo clubs at the state high school boys tournament on Nov. 14-15 and pulling its membership for 20 years from Kentridge High School, the Kentridge Water Polo Club has yet to be recognized as a legitimate club sport of the school. The club’s coordinators are fighting to change that. Kentridge High School doesn’t support or endorse the team because, according to Kent School District Athletic Director Dave Lutes, the district prohibits associated student body organizations from creating athletic-based clubs. It comes down to the district’s resources, Lutes says, because it’s hard for the district to find a way to elevate one sport above any other. If they incorporate and support water polo, he says, they would have to also incorporate rugby or lacrosse or a multitude of other sports. “It’s a cost and resource issue,” said Lutes “but it’s also a philosophical issue, what makes water polo any better

wants recognition for bringing notoriety to the school. There are 25-30 club teams in the state, many of which are supported or partially funded by schools. “They’re going to be a good team down the road,” said Auburn Mountainview club coach Justin Pritchard said. “They’ve been around quite awhile, but they have to fund their own team. There is no school support. They’ve got amazing kids, real good coaches. They care enough to pay $300400 to play. It’d be neat if the school would support them just a little bit.” “I certainly try to keep it so that we follow all the high school rules, it’s been kind of my goal to get it recognized by the school district,” said McKee. McKee said the Auburn School District supports club water polo teams He plans to present a proposal to allow Kent schools to recognize and support water polo clubs this year or early next year. “We’re happy that they don’t outlaw us,” McKee says, “they could really take the stance that we can’t have the Kentridge name.”

Tap into ideas for your garden
THE GARDENER
Add color with paint, tile and garden art. Gardeners in warm climates have always looked for ways to add color that does not require a watering can. Sicilian gardens are rich with ceramic tiles, painted pots and garden statuary. Stucco walls are painted peach or pink and native stone mellows to gold to create a lovely back drops for plants. In one poolside garden at a resort in Taormina we admired colorful square pots that were made from five 12-inch-by-12-inch ceramic floor tiles. A simple do-it-yourself project, each brightly painted tile was glued to the edge of a 12inch bottom base tile and secured with construction adhesive. The result is a tile cube open at the top that can be filled with potting soil and heat loving plants
such as palms, plumbago, thungbergia, sedums and citrus fruits. Turn your balcony into a hanging garden. Traveling the world should always make one appreciate home and visiting a country like Sicily with high taxes and higher unemployment made us very aware of our status as “rich Americans.” All over Europe fewer citizens own property and can afford the luxury of a large garden. Renting a small apartment does not keep Italians from creating roof top, balcony and even alley gardens. Geraniums spill from terra cotta pots over wrought iron railings, potted palm and orange trees cast needed shade on roof top gardens and vegetable lovers harvest eggplant, tomatoes and basil from narrow alleys where containers may be as economical as recycled olive oil tins or plastic water jugs. Visiting Sicily showed us there is no excuse not to make the world a more beautiful place by growing plants. Lack of water and money in this country did not mean a lack of gardens or passion for living. For more information on visiting the ancient Greek

Use overhead timbers and wisteria vines to create quick shade in outdoor living areas. It may not be practical to add shade trees to your own patio area close to the house or to wait years for young trees to cast a shadow. Villas in Sicily grow almost instant shade by using the foliage of robust vines such as wisteria over pergolas made from wood, stone or even metal pipe. The north or east side of a building becomes the preferred spot for an outdoor living room in a hot climate while back home in rainy Washington the sun-drenched west or south side of a home would
be a more practical location for an outdoor living room. Wisteria not only drips with fragrant clusters of flowers in spring and sun-blocking foliage in summer but this vine has the good sense to lose its leaves during the winter months allowing much needed sunlight into the home. Marianne Binetti
The end of November is the beginning of the winter planning season. Winter evenings are made for garden scheming and dreaming and here are a few ideas to steal from our recent tour of Sicily, a sun drenched island sitting off the south toe of Italy. Our small group visited Sicily “off the beaten path” and discovered a people rich in history, wine, olive oil and a slower pace of life based on outdoor living and dining.

Toys for Joy returns to help those in need FOR THE REPORTER
The Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority, Kent Firefighters Local 1747, and the Kent Firefighters Foundation are once again sponsoring and supporting the Toys for Joy program. The annual event collects, sorts, wraps and delivers new and unwrapped toys to local
food banks and outreach programs for distribution to needy families in the community. The program also will be working with the city of SeaTac to provide for its residents this year. In addition to toys, nonperishable food and monetary donations are accepted. According to organizers, this year has seen an upturn
in the economy, but there are still many families in need. Some families have to dedicate their money to the basics in order to survive and do not have the finances to buy gifts during the holidays. Toy wrapping parties are scheduled for 6 p.m. Dec. 9 and 18 and are open to the public. Last year the public
