Santa Paws is coming to Everett Animal Shelter tanimalservices.org. Adopt now and your pet will be feeling right at home in time for the holidays. If your furry family is already complete, you might want to consider bringing your cat or dog down to visit Santa Paws this December. The Animal Rescue Foundation is offering pictures with Santa Paws from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 6 and 13 at the Everett Animal Shelter. The cost is just $20 and includes a framed photo and a CD with other shots to take with you. Make a Santa Paws picture on your mantle a new holiday tradition! The Everett Animal Shelter cares for and houses lost or unwanted pets from most cities in Snohomish County. That’s a lot of area to cover, so gifts and volunteers are much appreciated. A donation to the shelter in the name of a loved one can make a great holiday gift, especially for the person on your list who is difficult to buy for. Donations can be made easily online or in person.

f you’ve been thinking about adding a new furry or feathered family member to your home during the holidays, this is the perfect time to visit the Everett Animal Shelter. There are a number of cats, dogs and small animals looking for a forever home to call their own. When you adopt from the Everett Animal Shelter, you can feel good knowing you’re not just giving an animal a good home, you’re also getting a great deal. Affordable adoption fees for dogs or cats include spaying or neutering, first vaccines, worming, microchipping, a collar and more. These services together would cost much more than the modest cost of adoption. But the Everett Animal Shelter isn’t just about cats and dogs. Adoption fees for birds, guinea pigs, rabbits and other small pets are also very affordable and sometimes include their cage. You can see pictures and videos of the adoptable animals online at www.everet-

Art, carolers, wine, chocolate at Schack Art Center

BEAUTIFUL GIFTS

F

a-la-la-mazing. That’s the artistic twist Schack Art Center in Everett gives each holiday season. What does that mean for you? An opportunity to fill gift boxes and Christmas stockings with cashmere scarves, stunning bracelets, turned wood art and stoneware creations all handmade by popular local artists. The fa-la-la season at Schack begins with its holiday art exhibit that runs until Dec. 27, at which over 50 artists from the Northwest Watercolor Society have displays for the community to enjoy and make

purchases from. Whimsical artistry from Chica Brunsvold, the coastal brushstrokes of Molly LeMaster, Richard McDiarmid’s painted light series and rich transparencies created by Peg Rosenlund provide a sampling of the beauty and creativity Schack guests will enjoy. Thursdays in December will be especially popular days for holiday shopping as The Schack Shop features local artists in three holiday trunk shows. Judy Macauley and Karen Lyons will be the featured artists on Dec. 4. Macauley, a Seattle glass artist, will sell fused-glass orna-

ments, decorative plates, whimsical tiles and more. As her counterpart, Lyons will provide a softer side of art with hand-painted silk scarves and a demonstration of silk painting. On Dec. 11, Carie Collver and Madeline Chadwick will show their wares. Each focuses their skills on wearables. Collver’s fashions include earrings, necklaces and bracelets. Chadwick is known for her stylish and trendy designer handbags, purses and totes. Melinda Barnett, who incorporates handmade, vintage and recycled components into her jewelry, along with Susie Howell, designer of one-of-a-kind cashmere scarves, glovelettes and accessories, will round out the trunk show on Dec. 18. Each trunk show runs noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free. From noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, shoppers will find a treasure trove of artistic gifts and home furnishings from 35 local artists at Schack’s Fa-La-La: Holiday Sale of Fine Arts and Crafts.

During Friday’s Fa-La-La event, happy hour will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. and Maren Oates, marketing manager, invites you to enjoy beer or wine and light appetizers along with live music by Glen Cunningham. Carolers will provide entertainment during Saturday’s Wine and Chocolate Happy Hour, 2 to 5 p.m. Schack Art Center is open daily. Hours are posted at www.schack.org. Admission is free. For last minute gift shopping, be sure to visit Schack from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Olympic Ballet Theatre’s ‘The Nutcracker’ returns

T

ickets are now on sale for one of the greatest holiday traditions — “The Nutcracker” by the Olympic Ballet Theatre. The full-length, traditional family favorite has been enchanting local audiences since 1982. Principal guest artists for this year’s production include former Pacific Northwest Ballet principal Mara Vinson, freelance artist Jennifer Safonovs and Le Yin, former Pacific Northwest Ballet and Houston Ballet principal dancer. Artistic directors are Mara Vinson and Oleg Gorboulev. Performances are at the Everett Performing Arts Center on Dec. 13 and 14 and the Edmonds Center for the Arts on Dec. 19 through 21. Last year all but one performance sold out, so it is recommended to buy tickets early. Groups of 10 or more may qualify for a discount. The wonderful dancing, story, music and props of “The Nutcracker” make it an ideal first performance to introduce children to the ballet. In fact, Olympic Ballet Theatre

offers special one-hour performances that are perfect for school groups and young children. These matinees are on Dec. 12 in Everett and Dec. 18 in Edmonds. But the Olympic Ballet Theatre isn’t just about “The Nutcracker. “ The company recently completed a very successful Fall program. Spring 2015, will offer an exciting mix of both classical and contemporary dance that showcases the artists’ diversity. The offerings include traditional classic “Paquita” grand pas classique and “Nyman,” a new contemporary work that will be shown in its entirety for the first time. The Olympic Ballet Theatre is a nonprofit performing company dedicated to sharing and promoting the arts within the community. About 15,000 people, including some 4,000 school children, enjoy their performances each year. For many local children, this may be their only opportunity to see and enjoy ballet and, for some, it may spark an enthusiasm

THE NUTCRACKER that could lead to a professional career. This is why a gift to the Olympic Ballet Theatre is deeply appreciated. It’s a gift that reaches out beyond the theatre and touches the community. In an age when so many people have too much stuff, it’s nice to be able to make a donation in a friend or loved one’s name. Your financial gift is also tax deductible. Performance tickets are also a thoughtful gift that can create both lifelong memories and also support the arts. For more information, visit the Olympic Ballet Theatre page on Facebook or go to www.olympicballet.com

Young children through adults may also appreciate professional instruction in the art of dance. For more information, visit the Olympic Ballet School on Facebook or www.olympicballet.com

The Lights of Christmas come again to Warm Beach LIGHTS OF CHRISTMAS

A

n overnight getaway, a stroll among the trees, perhaps a prime rib dinner alongside a delightful theater production – all beneath a mountain range

of lights. That’s just one scenario you can treat yourself to at The Lights of Christmas at Warm Beach Camp. Each year the festival lights the evening sky with enchanting magic. Trumpeting angels, Santa and his reindeer, wispy trees and forestland wonders are created by volunteers who place over one million lights throughout the 15-acre campground.

Standing paramount is Cascade Splendor, a mountain scene that is 247 feet long and includes over 60,000 individual lights. Just as the Cascade Mountains look over the beautiful state of Washington, Cascade Splendor looks over the vast wonderland at Warm Beach. Part of that wonderland includes lodging opportunities within themed cabins that, as one lodger put it, provide “a good destination for the whole family to have a chance to build a Christmas memory.” Deer Mountain Lodge holds the warm rustic décor of an old-fashioned mountain

cabin. More rustic charm is found at Trail’s End, furnished with western décor, and Eldorado, a cabin with a mining theme straight from the Gold Rush days. The Bayside Inn has nautical charm with a holiday twist. If you’d like a touch of whimsy, the Mount Baker Rooms are for you – some are decorated with penguins, others with elves. Fun and festive holiday decorations fill the Kringle Kottage and the Nutcracker Suite delights all. Whatever lodging you stay in, anticipate a relaxed and fun holiday atmosphere where you can connect with family and friends away from distractions and busyness. Another memory maker at The Lights of Christmas is the annual dinner theater. This year’s production is “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play.” “This is a beautiful story that gives us all worth and value,” director Victoria Ritchey said. “With the setting of a radio drama, it becomes a history lesson for

some and a pleasant reminder of childhood for others.” The production ultimately presents a story of value and hope. “Giving our audience a special evening to relax, be pampered with a lovely meal, have a few laughs and take home something to think about is our goal,” she said. The Lights of Christmas takes place 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., December 4-7, 11-14, 18-23 and 26-30. Pay-what-you-can nights are December 4, 11, 29 and 30. Pricing for the nightly festival, holiday theater and lodging are available at www.warmbeach.com.

Interactive displays honor legacy at Hibulb Cultural Center

C

hristmas comes to Hibulb Cultural Center on Dec. 6 and 7. The center, which hosts interactive displays honoring the legacy of the Tulalip people, will feature a two-day bazaar as part of its annual holiday celebration. For the cost of admission, the community can explore the gallery, take part in children’s craft activities and shop for unique items at the bazaar where tribal vendors will sell arts and crafts, specialty goods, drums, cedar baskets and clothing, all ideal for holiday gift giving. Additional gift items will also be available at Hibulb’s gift store which carries woolen items from Pendleton, unique shoes and rain boots, beautiful scarves and a wealth of handmade jewelry and home goods from local artisans. Gift items for the kids are also on hand and, for the book lovers in your life, several titles are available, including “Tulalip, From My Heart” by Harriette Shelton Dover. According to Mytyl Hernandez, spokes-

person, this poignant autobiographical account of life on Tulalip Reservation flies off the shelf year round. The book also nicely correlates with the displays found throughout the cultural center. Tulalip’s traditional territories, seasonal lifeways, the importance of cedar trees, the tribe’s seven value stories – all are featured components celebrating ancestry, family, tradition, challenges and growth. As part of the center’s tour, guests experience a Tulalip longhouse where drums beat in the background and recorded stories told by Tulalip’s gifted storytellers provide a historic perspective of the ideals and actions that have shaped Tulalip’s spiritual, political and everyday lifestyles. Guests will also discover a rich heritage of craftsmanship behind the story poles, carvings and art-stenciled design throughout the building and embrace Tulalip Tribe’s military tradition through an exhibit entitled, “Warriors: We Remember.” Additionally, archaeological finds, historic

CANOE DISPLAY AT HIBULB CULTURAL CENTER

photographs, commemorative tributes and Coast Salish legends provide a sweeping portrait of Tulalip’s history and integrity. As does the center’s current special exhibit, “A Journey with Our Ancestors,” which expresses the importance of canoes within tribal history. Hibulb Cultural Center and its gift shop are located a short distance from I-5 exit 199. The center is open to the public 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Holiday hours are found at www.hibulbculturalcenter.org. Free admission is available the first Thursday of every month. General admis-

sion ranges from $6 to $10. A family pass for two adults and up to four children is $25. HCC and Tulalip tribal members enjoy free admission.

ngel Of The Winds Casino, the world’s friendliest casino, has added a five-story hotel, set to open midDecember, 2014. The more than $27-million construction project will add more than 100,000 square feet to the casino and create an additional 50 jobs for the community of Arlington. “We are truly blessed to have an opportunity to add a hotel to our facility, allowing us to provide an amenity our casino guests have been requesting for quite some time,” said Travis O’Neil, general manager of Angel Of The Winds Casino & Hotel. “As we continue to grow, we anticipate adding more amenities that will make Angel Of The Winds a destination for not only the area, but the greater Pacific Northwest.” The new hotel at Angel Of The Winds will feature 125 guestrooms, including six two-bay suites with most over 800 sq. ft., that will be connected to the casino. It boasts the brandnew River Rock Smoke Shop, gift shop as well as a porte-cochere and valet station, which provides guests a distinct entrance into the hotel. All standard rooms boast signature photography from local artist Steven Kennedy, RainDance shower fixtures, polished chrome bathroom fixtures by Kohler, 42-inch LED TVs, custom-designed Simmons Beautyrest mattresses, Keurig coffee makers, and iPod speaker docks with clock radios. Complimentary high-speed Internet and Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. Angel Of The Winds is owned by the Stillaguamish Tribe, which opened the

casino in October 2004 on tribal land. The Tribe’s vision has always been to develop “The World’s Friendliest Casino” in the market. “We built Angel Of The Winds Casino on our Tribe’s lands and the addition of a hotel gives us the opportunity to welcome old and new friends back to our home for just an evening, or a weekend adventure,” said Shawn Yanity, chairman of the Stillaguamish Tribe. The hotel was designed by DreamCatcher Hotels and constructed by Exxel Pacific. Angel Of The Winds Casino is located just three minutes east of I-5 Exit 210 in Arlington, Wash. This is the third phase in the Angel Of The Winds Casino & Hotel expansion project. The first phase consisted of adding 400 slot machines and remodeling of Katie’s Kitchen, the signature restaurant named after tribal member and advocate Kathleen Goodridge Johnson. The second phase expanded the casino to include table games, Keno and a poker room, as well as updates to the Watershed Restaurant & Lounge. Reservations can be made by calling 360-474-9740 or visiting www.AngelOfTheWinds.com.

Cut your own tree this year at Farmer Brown’s Tree Farm

H

ave you ever wanted to take your family into the woods to cut your own Christmas tree? Just south of Arlington, 32-acre Farmer Brown’s Christmas Tree Farm is the next best thing. Since 1990, Bill and Lila Brown have been running this ultimate in tree farms. It features thousands of trees, both sheared and unsheared, in a delightful rural setting. Wandering through Farmer Brown’s is like taking a stroll through the woods only better because it has been designed for customer convenience. One big difference is the extensive property features a road so families don’t have to stretch their legs too far with walking – unless they want to. Some people like to spot their tree from the comfort of the car. Others like to stroll through the trees and find the perfect specimen. “Some people might want in and out in 20 or 30 minutes. Other people might want to stay two hours,” Bill Brown said. He has

taken great care to make sure people can stay as long, or as little, as they like when choosing their tree. In fact, the Browns spent many years researching Christmas tree farms before they laid out and built their own. Pets are welcome at Farmer Brown’s as long as they are on a leash and if the owners clean up after them. That means it can be an outing for the whole family. After choosing and cutting or digging the tree of your choice, many families like to sit by the bon fire, listen to music or enjoy a snack. “We’re going to give the proceeds from our hot dog sales this year to the American Cancer Association,” Brown said. Kettle corn, hot chocolate and cider are also available. Farmer Brown’s features all of the most popular varieties of trees. There are Noble fir, Fraser fir, Grand fir, Douglas fir, Norway spruce and Colorado Blue spruce. Most tree farms charge by the foot or by the species

ACRES OF CHRISTMAS TREES but at Farmer Brown’s pricing is related to the area where you cut or dig your tree. Attendants greet families as they drive in, offer instructions and provide you with a saw. They can even suggest the best ways to keep your tree fresh through the holidays. Flocking service is also available. Farmer Brown’s Christmas Tree Farm is open 9 a.m. to dusk, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from Nov. 28 through

Dec. 24. For detailed driving directions, visit the website.

Downtown Everett Downtown Everett is alive with holiday fun

aroling, caroling up and down, Christmas bells are ringing. Mark ye well the song we sing, gladsome tidings Everett brings. Ding dong, ding dong, Christmas bells are ringing! This best-loved Christmas carol by Alfred Burt was originally written in 1954 to accompany a Christmas card. In 1960, Nat King Cole recorded the carol and The Muppets adopted the song for their 1987 TV special, “A Muppet Family Christmas.” This year, the words have been changed up – just a bit – in anticipation of Everett’s holiday shopping season. From 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, Everett’s annual Wintertide Celebration will take place at Wetmore Theatre Plaza, 2710 Wetmore Ave. At this old-time village festival, carolers will fill the air with music while you warm your hands by the toasty bonfire and enjoy free hot cocoa and cookies. The much-anticipated tree lighting and the arrival of Santa on an Everett fire truck will also be part of the magical evening. Holiday music will again fill the air on Dec. 6 and 7 as the Everett Chorale presents “The Sweet Sounds of Christmas with the Brass Reflections Quintet.” Diane Giese, a performer in the choir, is especially excited about this performance, which will feature John Rutter’s “Gloria,” a compilation that Everett Chorale last sang 12 years ago at Carnegie Hall. “John Rutter directed us at our Carnegie Hall performance and he signed a copy of my music,” Giese said. “Twelve years later, I still have that copy and I still love his music.” Everett Chorale’s performance will take place at

WETMORE THEATRE PLAZA

EVERETT CHORALE 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, and 3 p.m. on Sunday, at Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave. Ticket information is available by phone, 425-257-8600, or at www.everettchorale.org. Unique gift shopping opportunities are, of course, part of Everett’s holiday charm, and Burkett’s Savvy Clothing at 2617 Colby Ave. is filled with American-made women’s fashions. Owner Holly Burkett-Pohland strives to offer merchandise not shown in major department stores and has trained stylists on hand to help you find the perfect outfit for yourself or someone you love. Further fashion finds are at Erickson’s Jewelers, 2625 Colby Ave., where romantics and sentimentalists alike will find the perfect touch of sparkle to tuck beneath the Christmas tree. Emeralds, amethysts, diamonds, contemporary settings and vintage styles – all are available from this company known for its custom wedding rings and jewelry redesigns. Another sentimental gift that can be tailor-made – memorabilia and keepsakes custom-framed within a shadow box. At Anabel’s Framing and Gallery, 2531 Broadway, favor-

ite photographs, souvenirs and heirlooms are preserved as treasured pieces of art. The shop also specializes in etchings, watercolors, giclées and serigraphs. Citrine Health may be known as a nonprofit health center for women of all income levels, but it also has plenty of gift options on hand. The building, located at 2940 W. Marine View Dr., houses a fair trade gift shop with local art, jewelry, scarves and BeadPositive® key chains. It is also home to The Bra Shop, a boutique filled with sweet and sassy bras for all body sizes, including bras for women who are post-mastectomy. And yes, bras are available in a sizzling Christmasy red. Speaking of red, Washington State University’s colors are on full display at the new WSU Connections store, 2809 Colby Ave., where you’ll find crimson and gray apparel, Cougar Gold cheese and Wine By Cougars. A short distance away at 2615 Colby Ave., you’ll find plenty of wine glasses, serving trays, napkins and party goods at J. Matheson Gifts, Kitchen and Gourmet, where a holiday open house will be held 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 5 and 6.

T

Pip and Sugar,” McAllister said. “And I always have wreathes. They’re very popular.” Sometimes seed cakes are also popular with squirrels. If you know someone who is going crazy trying to keep squirrels out of their bird feeders, Wild Birds Unlimited has the solution. They carry the very best in squirrel-proof feeders. But people often enjoy feeding squirrels too, and for those folks McAllister carries a number of squirrel feeders — both practical and whimsical — to keep furry friends happy. Quality seed mixes specially blended to appeal to local birds are available year-round. With no messy fillers, they keep the patio cleaner and cut down on the potential for rodents. Wild Birds Unlimited also has an array of bird and wildlife related apparel. There is a selection of hats and socks featuring bird images. McAllister also keeps a large selection of well-priced and attractive scarves in stock. They’re one of the biggest sellers during the holidays, she said.

here are many kinds of birds that frequent the Puget Sound region. But this year, one bird stands out above all others in popularity – the Seahawk. That’s why Michele McAllister, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Everett, has a wide variety of licensed Seahawks gifts and apparel in stock for the holidays. “We have Seahawks flags of all sizes, ornaments, wall hangings, bottle openers, hats – you name it,” McAllister said. “We even have a Seahawks birdbath.” Seahawks gifts come at all price points. They’re not just perfect for fans, they also please hard-to-buy-for people and make great Secret Santa gifts. There is another gift at Wild Birds Unlimited that McAllister often hears is destined for Secret Santa exchanges and loved ones. Novelty seed cakes molded into characters and holiday shapes are almost as popular with the recipients as they are with the wild birds that they feed. “There are two new characters this year,

MICHELE MCALLISTER HOLDING DOLLY, WOODY MCALLISTER AND CHERYL CREEDEN Ornaments of all types also fly out the door during the holidays. The store carries all kinds. Many are nature or bird related. Some are lighted and many are very collectable. Some customers have a holiday tradition of coming in to pick out a new ornament every year. People also come each year in search of quality educational toys and books for children. Another popular holiday gift are weather stations. A wireless station is available for under $50. “It also charges your mobile devices,” McAllister said. Wild Birds Unlimited is located in the

Claremont Village shopping center on Evergreen Way. There is plenty of parking.

Make it a catered Silvertips game night of luxury S

ilver bells are great this time of year. But for hockey fans, Silvertips are even better. Lightning play and powerhouse faceoffs have led the Everett Silvertips to one hot season. The team’s shutout victory over the defending Western Hockey League champions, the Edmonton Oil Kings, is proof positive that tickets to a Silvertips game are bound to be a very popular Christmas gift this year. Admittedly, there is one tough part about this particular Christmas gift: choosing which game to attend. There are 17 home games for the

Silvertips following Christmas; including three against the Seattle Thunderbirds. The team has several away games, too, so you’ll have to decide which you’d rather do: stick close to XFINITY Arena at Everett or make a road trip. Single game tickets range from $14 to $44.You also have package options to choose from and, just in time for Christmas, a four-game package includes a free hat and a 10-game package comes with a free jersey. Additional game packages are available online, www.everettsilvertips.com, or by phone, 425252-5100. If you’re still not sure which game tickets

to get, no worries. You can purchase a gift certificate, along with authentic Silvertips merchandise, at the Silvertips Team Store located on the corner of Oakes Avenue and Hewitt Avenue inside XFINITY Arena. Now, game night for mom, dad and the kids is a pretty great idea. But what if part of your family just isn’t that interested in hockey? No worries. A night at a Silvertips game isn’t just about hockey. There’s a whole other entertainment experience waiting for you – everything from light shows and live music to theme nights and contests. And the scoreboard. Let’s not forget about the scoreboard. Who knows when its

screen will zoom in on you for the chance to dance for your dinner or smooch with your honey to win a dozen roses? Since a night out with the Silvertips offers such a wide range of entertainment, you might be interested in hosting an office party at a game. Groups of 15 or more can enjoy block seating with special pricing. For a bit of luxury during the game, reserve some catering and a suite that includes a lounge area, wet bar, HDTV and theater style seats. To entertain 35 to 90 of your friends, clients or employees, reserve the Octane Lounge where you can host a dinner buffet, appetizer spreads, bar service and more.
