Unable to settle, Mukai activists prepare for trial County attempted to purchase the historic farmhouse By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer

The legal battle over the Mukai farmhouse continues, as the island group attempting to take control of the property was unable to reach a settlement with its current owner, despite an offer from King County to purchase the house. Both sides are now preparing to return to court, with a trial date scheduled for next May. “We really worked hard to get it done, and it didn’t happen,” said Friends of Mukai President Lynn Greiner of the recent negotiations. “We were really disappointed.” This fall marks two years since the Friends of Mukai filed suit against Island Landmarks, a nonprofit headed by Texas resident Mary Matthews, over control of the historic Mukai farmhouse and Japanese garden. While unable to prevail in court so far, the Friends group has steadily amassed support for its mission — to get the property out of the

hands of Matthews, who has not opened it regularly to the public and who many say has let the house and garden fall into disrepair. Organizations and government agencies ranging from King County 4Culture to the National Trust for Historic Preservation have called for change at Mukai and have thrown their support behind the Friends group. “A lot of people are excited about what we’ve got going on and are eager to get this resolved,” Greiner said. Earlier this year, King County offered to purchase the property as part of a settlement agreement between Island Landmarks and the Vashon group, a move that would have ended the legal dispute and added the property to a short list of historic sites the county stewards. However they could not reach a deal Island Landmarks would agree to. “We’d get right up and very close to what I thought would be a final deal, and they would back away,” said Christie True, who was closely involved in the negotiations as the director of the SEE MUKAI, 19

The Murph has been sitting at the bottom of Quartermaster Harbor since 2007.

Sunken tugboat emerges with a story By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer

Thomas Donovan has always been fascinated by The Murph, an old Navy tugboat that sank in Quartermaster Harbor in 2007. An attorney living in Tacoma, he went scuba diving there often, exploring The Murph’s hallways and the sea life growing on it. He researched the 70-yearold tug’s history and wrote an article about it for The Beachcomber. And when he was married in 2009, there was only one place to hold his wedding reception — on a flotilla of boats above The Murph.

Last week, however, the 100-foot tugboat was raised from the water in a two-day effort by the state Department of Natural Resources, which considers the sunken boat a hazard. “It’s tough to see it go, and much of the diving community is going to miss it as well,” Donovan said. “But it’s for the better and for the greater good.” The Murph is the fifth sunken boat that DNR’s Derelict Vessel Removal Program, funded by boater registration fees, has removed from Quartermaster SEE TUGBOAT, 17

Local sculptor draws on geology as her works dot the country Arist recently chosen for large installation at Tacoma Art Museum By JULI GOETZ MORSER Staff Writer

Julie Speidel in her Vashon studio.

Julie Speidel’s studio sits on a rolling piece of land that runs along the spine of the island. When the Vashon glacier finally relinquished its frozen hold on Puget Sound 15,000 years ago, it deposited in its wake a scattering of geologic calling cards — irregular boulders or glacial erratics. And it left one for Speidel.

Little did the internationally acclaimed sculptor know when she discovered the ancient missive behind her studio that it would eventually become the muse for “Kinetic Repose,” Speidel’s most recent installation for the Tacoma Art Museum (TAM). Last Saturday the museum unveiled the outdoor sculpture, one of three pieces it commissioned for its newly expanded building designed by Olsen Kundig Architects. Elegant and soft-spoken with a delightful, dry wit, Speidel, 73, is an artist who juggles a busy schedule packed with multiple projects. Her large-scale art requires working with a crew of three professionals to exe-

cute her designs. Several outbuildings connect to her spacious studio, and a walk through them reveals a spiraling piece of bronze for a commission still in progress, a tall-ceilinged room used for welding, sanding and painting and at the very back alcove, a stainless steel sculpture inspired by a recent trip to Brittany, France. Indeed, the larger-than-life piece captures the sway of traditional Breton skirts and jaunty tilt of a lace headdress, but the figure is surprisingly abstract. This intersection of abstract and figurative is familiar territory for Speidel, who wonders SEE SPEIDEL, 13

As war draws to an end, quilts are still needed for the wounded The war in Afghanistan made headlines last month when the remaining Marines left Helmand Province, where some of the worst fighting took place during the 13-year war. While the message to the public is that the United States’ role in the war is nearly over, Sue Nebeker, who has run American Hero Quilts from her Maury Island home for the last decade, says that quilts for wounded service men and women are still in demand, and her organization continues to send them and continues to seek financial support for what is still a large need. “Nothing has changed, much to my great chagrin, at least for us, she said recently.

Nebeker delivers quilts each month to Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM), which has seen an influx of 1,400 veterans coming for care after being relocated from elsewhere, Nebeker said. She plans to take 250 quilts there this month and send 100 to Afghanistan, where the red, white and blue quilts are still being requested for wounded members of the military. In all, since she delivered her first quilts to JBLM in the early days of the Iraq War, American Hero Quilts has provided more than 17,200 quilts to wounded members of the military. Nebeker has no plans to stop now. “Our plan is to continue as long as its needed and we’re able, she said. For more information on the project and how to donate, see Americanheroquilts.com.

Affordability, fairness top list of public concerns over park user fees By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer

After last week’s meeting about Vashon Park District’s user fees, the commissioner who led the meeting says any increase in fees he will seek will be nominal and that he may also seek to lower some fees or provide additional services. About 50 people filled the Ober Park performance room last Wednesday, when commissioner Scott Harvey presided over a meeting to collect input on a range of fee-related issues. Several of those who attended weighed in, expressing support for the district creating a reserve, but also expressing the need to keep fees as affordable as possible and that any fees paid be fair across the board. Harvey promised such a meeting last summer when he chaired a district finance committee that suggested raising user fees to help bolster the district’s finances. He said he was pleased with the number of people who attended and spoke up. “We gathered a lot of information. I was excited about how diverse the group was,” he said. “Youth sports — they did not have more people than anyone else. It drove home here the importance of multiple constituents and that no one constituent should drive the bus.” Commissioners Doug Ostrom and Bill Ameling also attended the meeting. While Ostrom agreed with Harvey, Ameling repeatedly disagreed with Harvey’s position that fees be raised to help build a financial reserve. “You don’t balance your budget on the backs of those least able to pay,” Ameling said. “That’s not going to happen as long as I am sitting here.” Moreover, Ameling said, he believes the park district is in good financial shape now, and it will continue to improve over the next two years, with higher tax receipts and the retiring of a bond, which will free up $100,000 a year.

While many may think of running the Vashon Pool as a costly proposition, Scott Harvey says that pool users pay 72 percent of its costs, a high reimbursement rate compared to users of most other park district venues. “I could show everyone here in simple math that in the year 2016, we could put $100,000 in reserve and have no user fees and balance the budget,” he said. In preparation for the meeting, Harvey created a spreadsheet that shows the amount of income different park facilities generated with user fees this year compared to the park district’s expenses for them. There was a wide range, with Burton Adventure Recreation Center paying just 7 percent of its costs, which were less than $5,000, Paradise Ridge fees accounting for 38 percent of costs there and Ober Park renters paying 208 percent of related costs. Field and gym fees brought in 16 and 17 percent of their costs respectively, and swim fees covered 72 percent of costs at the Vashon Pool. Harvey would like to get rid of this kind of disparity, he said, and have all users pay within just a few percentage points of one another. At Ober Park, instead of lowering

fees, he might like to propose those who rent the building get additional services provided. Some members of the public, however, raised questions about how to determine what is fair, saying that what sounds fair on paper might not be fair in actuality, as the facilities vary widely and some user groups may end up paying little, while others may pay a lot. Former commissioner and longtime soccer coach David Hackett also attended and spoke out for the need for fairness, indicating that some user groups do not pay user fees because of special arrangements with the district. But overall, he said, he does not believe the current system is broken, so there is no need to fix it. “We just need to move forward as a park district and get the levy passed and stop trying to stick it to whichever group is not your favorite,” he said. “I think it is especially wrong to soak the kids for using our facilities.” Vashon Park District board president Lu-Ann Branch was not able to attend the meeting, but said she had been briefed about it and planned to watch a recording of it. The board will begin budget work later this month and will consider user fees as part of that process. Branch said she has requested more information from park district Executive Director Elaine Ott about the fees, as she believes the board needs more information, including potential increases in administrative costs to implement any changes, before making any decisions. “If increases cost too much to put into effect, is it worth it?” she asked. “The board needs to go through a discernment process, getting more information and finding out what bang for the buck we would get.” She added that she knows some people are concerned that fee increases could price some out of offering activities or taking part them. “What is the tipping point for people not to participate anymore?” she said. “I do not think any of the commissioners want to get to that point.”

Former restaurant kitchen will open to public Owner hopes new community kitchen will fill a need for commercial kitchen space By SARAH LOW Staff Writer

Addressing what he believes to be a long unfulfilled need on the island, Chris Lueck plans to turn his former Express Cuisine restaurant space into a community kitchen while the property remains for sale. “Ever since we first came to the island, people have been saying that Vashon needed a (community) commercial kitchen,” said Lueck, who closed the popular restaurant in August due to a personal health issue. “So now there will be one.” Now, the commercial kitchen in the space can be rented by the hour by anyone who wants it for business ventures or personal needs, such as preparing food for private parties or functions. Lueck is calling the new business The Kitchen Larder. While several island organizations have commercial kitchens, none have been actively marketed for business purposes. “Patty (Freebourn), of Patty’s Tamales, is the perfect example,” Lueck said. “She rents the kitchen space from me for 12 hours every Monday to make her tamales, which enables her to then sell them at the market and elsewhere.” For Freebourn and anyone else who might make use of the facility, the financial implication is significant, Lueck said, as it means they do not have to buy or build their own. Washington state has strict laws regarding the production of food that is to be marketed or sold to others, and a commercial kitchen is one of the requirements. “I’ve heard so many people talk about special recipes they have for various things that they think would be a big hit at the market or on an even broader scale. Not having access to a commercial kitchen is what stops the majority of people who think about starting a food business,” Lueck said. In fact, “kitchen incubators,” as they are often referred to, have started to spring up all over the country. It’s a business model that has seen dramatic growth in recent years, most likely due to growing consumer demand for specialty, artisanal and locally made foods. A recent report from the Specialty Foods Association showed a nearly 20-percent increase in specialty food product sales between 2011 and 2013. Using the kitchen incubator model, entrepreneurs can get started in a licensed kitchen at a fraction of the cost of

doing it on their own. Another benefit to many of these community kitchens is business help and advice from those who have experience, and Lueck said he is prepared to provide that for clients who lease his space. “Making the food is just the first step,” he said. “I’m hoping that if things take off, this could work as another selling point for the space. The ones in Seattle and Tacoma are always booked.” Caleb Johns, manager of Vashon’s Farmers Market, thinks the idea is a good one. “Having a facility where people can create more Vashon grown and produced products is wonderful,” he said. “It will be interesting to see what kinds of creative ideas people come up with. Maybe we’ll have new vendors next summer because of this.” The kitchen isn’t the only space in the former restaurant that Lueck intends to offer for public use. The front of the space — the former dining room — will also be available for rent on an hourly basis for art showings. The Kitchen Larder and art space are now available to rent by the hour. For more information or to book ones of the spaces, contact Chris Lueck at 578-2852 or email vtwineguy@gmail.com.

The north-end ferry route now has one larger boat assigned to it, something state officials hope will reduce ferry lines during busy travel times. The new vessel arrangement has been planned by Washington State Ferries (WSF) for some time, but went into effect on Monday. The route will now permanently have two 124-car Issaquah Class ferries and one 87-car Evergreen State Class ferry, compared to the previous arrangement of one larger boat and two smaller boats. The route is now sailing with the Chelan, the Evergreen State and the Cathlamet, though the exact boat assignments could change. For years, the tightly scheduled triangle route has been plagued by delays, particularly during peak travel times. Hoping to address the delays, WSF recently implemented a new schedule with slight adjustments to sailings times. Ferry officials hope the new schedule and new boat arrangement will work together to alleviate delays andas long lines at the dock. “We’ll be tracking how the loads balance out between vessels,” said WSF spokeswoman Marta Coursey, “but we expect that the lines should be shorter during peak travel times as a result of having a larger vessel on that route.” —Natalie Martin

TOOTH TALK

DID YOU KNOW? Having pretty teeth is good for you. Multiple studies have shown that an attractive smile boosts confidence, self-esteem and improves quality of life. Many people who are embarrassed by the appearance of their teeth try to hide them by not smiling which can have social and physical consequences. Luckily, there are many simple ways to improve the appearance of teeth. First of all, take pride in your teeth by improving your home care. By brushing and flossing regularly, you can remove stain which darkens the teeth and improve gum health. Many people are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth because of unhealthy gums. Over the counter and professional bleaching products are safe and effective over time. Bleaching can cause reversible sensitivity but does not damage the enamel. For many people, simply repairing a chipped or worn tooth with a bonded filling can restore symmetry to the face and drastically improve aesthetics.

Think of it as an what I looked like sans head fur, omerta for guys with male patthat was the time to do it. Even terned baldness. The second rule before I put the razor down, I is wind is your enemy. If it hits could see if I kept my head shaved you at the right angle, you can I would never meet anybody on go from an uber-cool coiffure the island. People tend not to to something that looks like a strike up a friendly conversation frizzy weather vane sticking out with someone that looks like a

It’s clearly time for the Mukai farmhouse to change hands, and its owner should have taken King County up on its offer to purchase the property. The Mukai farmhouse and garden is an important place to preserve. It’s a piece of the island’s Japanese-American history as well as its agricultural history. The Mukais ran a successful strawberry growing and packing business, and many have called their home just outside town a marrying of two cultures — an American-style farmhouse set off by a traditional Japanese garden. Mary Matthews, a former islander, saw the significance of this site years ago. In what many considered a visionary effort, she raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for her nonprofit, Island Landmarks, to purchase the house and garden. She successfully got it declared a King County landmark and a site on the National Register of Historic Places. But Matthews’ vision to restore the property and open it as an interpretive center — a vision for which public agencies gave her money to purchase it — has not come to fruition. Years later, she and her husband now live in Texas and seldom seem to visit. The house and garden are in need of significant restoration work — work Matthews has said she’d like to accomplish but doesn’t have the funds for. It wasn’t opened to the public at all this year that we know of. And it’s still surrounded by a deer fence that King County ordered Island Landmarks to remove this summer. The property seems largely ignored. For some time, Matthews has said she’s ready to sell the farmhouse to an entity that can properly steward it. That’s why it’s baffling to learn that Island Landmarks could not come to an agreement to sell the property to King County. King County has significant resources and its own historic preservation program. The county has proven it can steward other historical properties, such as the Clise Mansion at Marymoor Park. The county also has a troop of dedicated islanders — the Friends of Mukai — standing in wait to help restore and manage Mukai and do education around it. Island Landmarks is currently battling the Friends group in court, but the Friends have helped facilitate a solution that seems to be the best for both parties. With King County ownership and the Friends’ help, the house could one day become the interpretive center that Matthews dreamed of. It’s due time for the Mukai property to be passed on to a new owner, before it falls further into disrepair, and King County seems a perfect fit. It’s not clear why Island Landmarks didn’t take the county up on its offer. Matthews wouldn’t comment, but a top county official said the county “bent over backwards” to come to an agreement. Whatever the holdup, a trial isn’t scheduled until May, so there’s still time for a settlement. Island Landmarks should reconsider and try to negotiate a sale of the Mukai property to King County, paving the way to restore this important place.

of the side of your head. And rule number three, hairspray. Lots of it. By the time you are done, your tresses should be harder than a bike helmet. However, one of the pitfalls of this type of hairstyle is when narcissism raises its ugly head — literally. When this happens, a man can go from tasteful sleight-ofhair design to full Donald Trump. Trump does for hairstyles what Jeffrey Dahmer did for cooking. Seriously, how self absorbed must you be that the entire world thinks you’re wearing a diseased merkin yet you parade around like it’s a work of art on your head? I am surprised he hasn’t tried to patent it. For those of you that aren’t familiar with the world of merkins, a merkin is artificial pubic hair. These faux-filaments have been around since 1450 or so. Apparently it was tres chic to shave your real hair to cut down on various infestations. You know what, on second thought I shouldn’t say The Donald’s bungled bouffant looks like a merkin because it’s an insult to fake trouser beards everywhere. So gentle reader, when you begin to see your hairline ebb, don’t despair because just like Yogi Berra’s barber said, “It ain’t over til it’s over, and then you do a combover.” In fact, I’ve become so enamored with this style I’ve recommended it to everyone, men, women, children and pets. I am so convinced this is wave of the future I am campaigning to change our name to the Vashon Maury-Island Beachcombover.

Parents hope to make changes for Vashon’s Millennials After tragedy, islanders in their teens and 20s are invited to speak up about their needs and wants By SUSAN RIEMER For The Beachcomber

Following the death of their son Rj Ontiveros, Judith Neary and Ramon Ontiveros have launched a nonprofit and are reaching out to islanders in their teens and 20s to learn what they believe would make Vashon a better place for them. In the days immediately following Rj’s death from suicide last month, Neary said she and her husband spent time with his friends and extended family, and ideas sprang from those conversations: building a community house or center where teens and young adults can gather, offering classes in mindbody body balance and nutrition — simple things that they can use to manage stress — and possibly following a dream of Rj’s by growing mushrooms for medicinal and ecological purposes. Neary said she has only an outline of what might come to be and will rely on island Millenials to create the rest. “We will find out what they want, and we will build what they need,” she said. While the loss of her son, who was just 25, is fueling this action, Neary said that his death was the tipping point in a difficult two years on the island, which has seen far too many suicides. “We need to just stop this,” she said. “This is insane. We are losing so many kids, not just kids, but young, vibrant adults.” In conversations with some of Rj’s friends, she said, some consistent themes have emerged about being a teen or young adult on Vashon.

“The feedback from those kids is they have nowhere to go,” Neary said. There is no safe, central place that is easy to get to, where they can create their own community, she added. She noted that millions of dollars have been raised to create a new arts center, yet there is not even a simple place for island youth. This is one of the problems she hopes to address and has scheduled a series of meetings beginning next week, inviting teenagers and “20 somethings” to Ober Park to brainstorm on a range of issues that the newly formed nonprofit Rj’s Kids might be able to take on. Older adults are welcome too, she said, but “it’s the Millenials who get to talk.” As news of the plans has spread, many islanders have said they would like to donate because of their own concerns about island youth and young adults, especially after the tragedies in recent years, Neary said. With the assistance of islander Chris Hunt, Rj’s Kids has been registered as a nonprofit, and donations are welcome. Neary, an interior designer, already has seed money, she noted, including $5,000 the appliance company Jenn-Air provided for this cause. “I am committed to it. I am going to resource every connection I have in my industry. I am going to make it happen,” she said. “My husband and I lost our only son, and we are going to save somebody else. I am going to kick the ass out of the island and fix this.”

Rj’s Kids Brainstorming meetings are set for 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, Nov. 20, Dec. 4 and Dec. 18, at the Ober Park performance room. All islanders in their teens and 20s are invited to attend. For more information, see the Facebook page for Rj’s Kids.org and www.rjs-kids.org.

Vouchers available for teens seeking confidential health care Vashon’s medical voucher program, which covers the cost of some medical care for people who cannot afford it, now provides an expanded number of vouchers for teens seeking confidential medical care regarding sexual and reproductive health. Previously, only the Vashon Women’s Health Center had those vouchers, but now the program has grown to include Fulton Family Medicine, Vashon Natural Medicine and Maxwell Family Medicine. Deborah Rieschl at Vashon Youth & Family Services administers the voucher program, which typically requires an appointment with her, but teens seeking confidential care are able to coordinate it directly with the participating clinics, she said. According to Washington state law, the age of majority for health care is 18, but minors younger than that can receive treatment without parental consent for several health issues, including those related to sexual and reproductive health. These vouchers, funded by Granny’s Attic, cover being tested for sexually transmitted infections, obtaining birth control or discussing other areas that teens may be uncomfortable talking about with their parents. With these vouchers, a family’s insurance will not be charged. Seven youth used these vouchers last year, Rieschl said, but more may use them this year now that the program has expanded to other clinics. For more information, teens should call the clinics or contact Rieschl at 463-5511, ext. 225. — Susan Riemer

Lost, then found

Lights for Tykes

A couple of weeks ago, we lost and then found our beloved Golden Retriever, Hoss, after seven days, by our home at Paradise Cove on Vashon. If it had not been for all the encouragement, love, and support, we wouldn’t have had the energy to continue our search. Hoss is recovering from surgery and we just got the good news that Hoss doesn’t have cancer! The heroes were all the friends and neighbors that stepped up to help and Hoss would like to recognize all with a special thank you “woof!” Thanks to searchers Corinne Harmon, Anne Woodward, Janet Miller and NW Canine Connection and King County Search and Rescue, Randy York, Beth Kellner, Polly Kranick, Charmaine Adsero, Emily Vogt, Reed Nichelson, Lisa Lenihan, Jen and Ukiah Justice, Jason, Jen, Quinn, and River Williams, and Amy Carey from VIPP who tirelessly coordinated all the efforts. Thanks to Cindy Koch, Michelle Philips, VIPP, Dr. Alan Givotovsky from Fair Isle and Tacoma Mountain Rescue, Susan Bates, Dr. Julie Decaire, Dr. Okrasinski, and Dr. Lawson from Summit Referral in Tacoma, Backcountry Avalanche Rescue K-9s (BARK), for their medical and financial support. Thanks to Vashon Island Fire and Rescue for assisting in getting Hoss out, priority load to Washington State Ferries, and the Beachcomber for getting the word out. How awesome our friends and neighbors are!

Thanks to Susan Riemer’s article in the BeachComber, and thanks to the generous folks on Vashon (and their visitors) Lights For Tykes raised $500 to buy lights for our children who walk or ride the roads of Vashon in the dark days of winter. Thriftway donated their wonderfully sunny spot on Sunday for a bake sale. If you missed out and want to join the effort, there is a large jar at Spider’s Ski & Sport store. Spider will purchase at cost and distribute lights which children may obtain with a voucher that will be offered at Chautauqua, McMurray, The Harbor School and the Food Bank. Puget Sound Energy and Lutheran Thrivent Financial have each contributed $250 making a grand total so far of $1,000. The next project is a King County grant. THE MORE MONEY, THE MORE LIGHTS.

Kevin, Kim, Austin, Parker, Midnight, and Hoss Ward

Special thanks from PTSA Thank you so much to all the volunteers who helped support the fall PTSA events at Chautauqua, and have signed up to volunteer throughout the year. For those of you who generously donate your time, energy, materials and ideas, please know that your efforts are making a difference. Special thanks also to True Value, Thriftway, Café Luna, Vashon Bakery, Snapdragon, Country Store and Gardens, The Little House, and Langley Farms for your donations to the Harvest Party and Staff Appreciation Breakfast. We are grateful to the Vashon community for helping to raise money for school programs, honor our staff, and provide free family activities. Thanks again! Popular slack key musician returns to the island Enjoy the sounds of Hawaii without leaving Vashon when slack key guitarist Makana returns to perform at the Open Space for Arts & Community at 7 p.m. on Sunday. Described as dazzling by the New York Times, Makana is an internationally acclaimed guitarist, singer and composer and a popular performer on Vashon. His previous two shows at the Open Space ended with standing ovations. Makana has been featured on three Grammy-nominated albums, including the soundtrack for the Academy Award winning film “The Descendants.” He has shared the stage with Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson, opened for music legends Sting, Carlos Santana and Elvis Costello and performed in venues ranging from Asian and European opera houses to The White House. Born and raised in Hawaii, Makana began singing when he was seven years old, took up ukulele at nine and began learning the ancient art of slack key at 11. By 14 he was performing professionally. He has dedicated his life to celebrating the beauty of tradition while exploring new, relevant perceptions, sounds and themes. His music often honors his forebearers, the Hawaiian music legends as well as the rock poet idols of the 1960s, paying homage to the kupuna (elders). Slack key, or Ki Ho’alu, is over 200 years old and indigenous to Hawaii. The style is charac-

VHS theater class performs original works By JULI GOETZ MORSER

The Vashon High School’s Theatre Arts II class will perform the play “30 Reasons Not To Be In A Play” for one weekend only, beginning on Friday. Playwright Alan Haehnal wrote his original script — “15 Reasons Not To Be In A Play” — as a tongue-in-cheek look at the myriad examples of why one should not be in a play. His scenes included memories of being put in a play by a second-grade teacher and then made to wear the tree costume, or the curse that befalls an actor when their father stalks him or her with a digital camera, creating embarrassing moments by shooting hundreds of photographs. Students in Stephen Floyd’s theater class used Haehanal’s work as a springboard to write scenes based on their own reasons not to be in a play. “I’m very pleased with the new material students have written, with only a little editing help from me,” Floyd said. “The first half of the final scene was written by a student, and I wrote the last few minutes of dialogue to bring it to a close, which is the only section of the show that I wrote myself.” The topics students chose to bring to life include the difficulty of fitting the theater arts class into a busy schedule, the reality of backstage drama that occurs during play production, how boys interested in theater get bullied for being gay, the humiliation of wearing stupid or ugly costumes and the agony of the audition process because it seems so unfair. “We also rewrote the ending to conclude with a character based on Holden Caufield

from ‘Catcher in the Rye’ talking about how phony actors are and how nothing good can come from being in a play,” Floyd said. The other characters then argue with Holden, trying to change his mind by telling him about the good things that have happened to them when they’ve been in plays. “And that refers back to many of the earlier reasons not to be in a play by recognizing them as positive things, (which) closes the circle,” Floyd added. About two dozen students have participated in the project, Floyd said — by writing, stage managing, working backstage or on lighting, as well as acting. With the addition of the new material written by the students, “30 Reason’s Not To Be In A Play” will be the first original works to be performed at the high school since the 2007 production of “It’s a Wilder World Today: Our Town Revisited.”

The play will be performed on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m., at the VHS Theatre. Tickets are $5. Opening night tickets are priced 2-for-1, if each individual brings a donation for the Vashon Food Bank. All tickets are available at Vashon Bookshop, the VHS office and at the door.

Pirates hang on for final win of the 2014 season By CHERYL PRUETT For The Beachcomber

The Vashon Pirates closed out their 2014 football season with a hang-on-by-your-nails victory over the Chimacum Cowboys last Thursday. The final score, a tight 16-14, swung in the balance down to the final seconds of the game. The Cowboys had driven down the field in the last two minutes of the game, only to have the attempted go-ahead field goal blocked by the Pirates. With 20 seconds to go, Vashon took the victory formation practically in their own end zone, taking a knee on four successive snaps as the clock wound down to zero. After blowing out the same Chimacum team a week ago on their home field, the Pirates had difficulty all night on the sty-like muddy turf conditions at the Port Townsend field. The Cowboys were clearly prepared for the Pirates and played a much more disciplined game. They focused their efforts on stifling senior running back Nate Lawson, who had run roughshod over them the prior week. Sophomore Bryce Hoisington was another target, but he still managed to put together a 100yard rushing game. After being forced to punt on their first possession, Vashon turned the game into a defensive battle, setting the tone on Chimacum’s first drive. The Cowboys returned the punt all the way back to the 9-yard line with junior Hunter Stanley saving the score. Deep in the red zone, the Pirates held strong, turning the Cowboys back and taking the

From there on out, it was a seesaw affair with both defenses shutting down the offenses as the mud bog developed mid-field. Deep in the trenches, junior Logan Nelson consistently contributed with key hits the entire game. Senior Jason Kruly and junior Ron Krieger continued their line dominance with multiple tackles and sacks. Sophomore Kellan Riley came through with a couple timely key tackles. Junior Chester Pruett showed strong pass defense all night, capped with two gamechanging interceptions, one on the goal line. Freshman Connor Hoisington also had a pick that turned the ball back over to the Pirates with good field position. Defensive play of the game would have to go to Bryce Hoisington, who saved a sure Chimacum touchdown by hur-

dling his own downed teammate, bringing the ball carrier down with a waistband grab that relieved him of his pants. Offensively, the first score of the game didn’t come until mid-second quarter. The Pirates moved the ball down the field behind a huge 30-yard Hoisington run, followed by 14 from junior Arthur Moore, with Pruett punching the score in from inside the 5. With the 2-point conversion, the Pirates took the lead, 8-0, with about six minutes to go in the first half. The best defensive series of the night followed the touchdown, with the Pirates driving the Cowboys back to a fourth and 30 situation, forcing a punt. Nate Lawson snaked his way through defenders for a score that was subsequently called back by a Vashon penalty. At halftime, the score was 8-0, Vashon. After a horrific and stupefy-

The Pirate girls’ soccer team played its final two playoff games last week, losing 3-2 to the Seattle Christian powerhouse and 2-1 after a tied game and penalty kicks to Bellevue Christian. Despite the losses, coach Karen Olsen was quick to point out the strength the of the girls’ team, which had an extremely successful season in league play. “They have grown beyond my expectations, and that is why I am so excited about next year,” she said. “I think we are going to be the ones that are unstoppable.” In the first game last week, Olsen said the Pirates played exceptional soccer and attributes the loss, in part, to a poor call by the assistant referee, which had the Pirates essentially handing the ball at one point to the their opponents, who made the most of it and scored. Still, the Pirates scored two goals in the second half, once with a penalty kick by Emily Browne, who also assisted Amy Olson with a goal. Coach Olsen designated Browne the MVP of the game. “She played the best game I have ever seen her play,” she said. In the second game of the week, against Bellevue Christian, both teams played exceptionally well, Olsen said, noting the Pirate defense was outstanding. Vashon had possession about 75 percent of the time but could not seem to score. At the end of regulation play, STORY CONTINUES, NEXT PAGE

ing Chimacum possession that seemed to last forever and included the lowlights of eight penalties in a row (both teams) the Cowboys finally got their first score of the night, and with the 2-point conversion the score was tied. Vashon answered with a quick and impressive march down the field, but was unable to get in the end zone. Three plays later, Connor Hoisington got his interception, leading to the Pirates’ second touchdown of the night by big brother Bryce. With eight minutes to go in the game, it was 16-8, Vashon. Chimacum scored their final touchdown with just over five minutes to go in the game, but failed to convert any extra points, leading to the final score of 16-14. With the game on the line and the Cowboys at first and 10 on their 20-yard line, the Pirates dug in for the final tense defensive push of the night. Big stops by Pruett, Nelson, Krieger and Bryce Hoisington kept the clock running as the Cowboys slowly moved down field. In the final series, the Cowboys, thanks to a huge Krieger sack, were facing a steep fourth and 11 and opted for a field goal from the Pirate 30 that would have won the game. With the kick blocked, the Pirates took over on downs with a minute to go and ran out the clock for the win. The gritty and close teammates, 16 strong for most games, had a roller coaster of a year and were thrilled to close out the season with two successive wins.

the game ended at a 0-0 draw, and the teams went on to play 10 minutes of overtime. In the end, the game went to penalty kicks, with Emily Browne scoring and goalie Hannah MacArthur saving two goals. It takes an exceptional goalie to do that, Olsen added, noting she named MacArthur the MVP of that game. “I truly believe we could go to State,” she said. “If we had had 10 more minutes or another match against them, I know we could win.” Looking ahead to next year, Olsen said there are a lot of younger talented players, who benefitted from seeing and participating in this year’s level of play. Even though the season has ended, Olsen is still running practices — with the focus on fun — until next Monday. “I don’t want them to think about what happened with Bellevue,” she said. “I want them to have fun and remember why they love the sport.”

Cross country team ends season with state competition Two athletes run their personal bests at the meet By BRUCE CYRA For The Beachcomber

Two Vashon Pirate cross country runners set personal bests at the state meet in Pasco over the weekend. Sophomore Jessica Merritt, in a break-out performance, finished as the first Pirate in a personal best of 21:44 over the 5-kilometer course. Junior Taryn Mulvihill, racing in place of an injured Kate Atwell, stepped up her game with a personal best of 24:18, placing as the sixth Pirate across the line. The team was fortunate to have another pleasant morning to race, as the sun was out after the valley fog cleared. As in past meets, the Pirates ran as a closely packed team, pushing each

Last Tuesday, Nov. 4, The Murph was hoisted up by crane in a project that cost the state around $622,000, including the cost to salvage the boat as scrap metal. It took several hours to bring the tug up, as the contractor, Global Diving & Salvage, repeatedly raised it, pumped water from its bilge and raised it a little more. The boat was covered in sea life, and workers tried to scrape off and return to the water as many creatures as they could. That sea life, many say, was one thing that made The Murph an attractive spot for scuba diving. “We don’t have that many wrecks in Puget Sound, and that one was really nice, said Rick Myers of Bandito Charters, a scuba diving charter based in Tacoma. Myers said The Murph was one of about a dozen shipwrecks that Bandito regularly took trips to. He understands why the state removed it, he said, but he is sad to see it go. “What constitutes garbage to others, it creates life, he said. Donovan said The Murph was considered a good dive not only because of its sea life, but because it was so near the surface, allowing for more natural light and making an easier dive for beginners. It also sank

TUGBOAT CONTINUED FROM 1

Harbor since summer of last year. But those involved in its retrieval say the tug is unique in its large size and in the time it spent underwater. “We don’t normally pull up ones that have been down for this long, said Melissa Ferris, who manages the program. The Murph was abandoned and sank in shallow water near the mouth of Quartermaster Harbor in 2007. At the time, the Coast Guard responded and removed oil from the boat, but Ferris said some oil still leaked afterwards and the state was worried more might eventually be released. “We felt it was important to get it out of there before the tanks rusted through and we ended up with an oil problem in Quartermaster, she said. What’s more, she said, the boat was close to the surface — it could been seen sticking out of the water during very low tides — and was considered a navigational hazard. Lighted buoys were placed around it to warn boaters coming in and out of the harbor.

perfectly upright — unlike many boats that settle on their sides — making it easy for divers to navigate the tug’s halls and rooms. “It actually sank like you’d think a shipwreck would sink, he said. Decades before it wound up at the bottom of the harbor, The Murph started its life as a Navy tugboat, built in 1944 in Jacksonville, Florida. “They made a lot of ships then for the war effort, Donovan said. Originally called The USS Wingina, the tug never saw action, but was stationed for most of its life at the Bremerton Navy Yard and in Astoria, Oregon, where it assisted large ships crossing the Columbia River bar. The boat was sold by the Navy in 1985 and went through several owners — including Seattle Central Community College — before its last owner, an Olympia man, abandoned it in Quartermaster around 2007. Accounts as to what happened next vary. Donovan has heard that an “eccentric individual lived on the boat for a time before it sank. Metal pieces were salvaged off the body, and Donovan believes it was scuttled to avoid disposal fees. Ferris, with the state, said she is unsure how exactly The Murph sank, but said it’s

Page 17

also likely that as parts were removed from the tug, it ultimately sprang a leak and sank. One person posted on a Seattle-area diving forum that The Murph was clearly scuttled, as it appeared its doors and windows had been tied open. Troy Kindred, a local sailor, said rumors about The Murph have made their way through the Vashon boating community, and he also heard that it was the stripping of the Murph that ultimately did it in. “I don’t think that they sunk it on purpose, he said. “I think they probably were careless in the way they were cutting out the valves. Kindred and a friend were on the water in his sailboat last week to watch The Murph come up. “It’s probably the biggest boat to sink around here, he said. “It’s pretty interesting. As for Donovan, he now travels for work more frequently and hadn’t been diving as much at The Murph. It was a shadow of its former self, he added, as divers have continued stripping pieces from the boat, taking latches, door handles, even the anchor. But still, there’s nothing like diving a shipwreck. “They’re time capsules from a different era of history, he said.

county’s Department of Natural Resources and Parks (DNRP). True said King County has been unhappy with the condition of the Mukai property, which was purchased with public funds, and last year the county council approved funds for DNRP to purchase the house and make preliminary repairs there. The money came from a $900,000 pot left over from a historic preservation loan program that DNRP initiated in the 1990s. While True could not say what the agency offered Island Landmarks for the farmhouse, she said King County allocated $190,000 for the purchase and repairs. Island Landmarks purchased the property for $300,000 in 2000. Once in county hands, True said, the Friends of Mukai would have been involved in managing the property and putting on related programming. “We saw it as a way of getting the property back under local control and making sure it was well cared for,” she said. True said Matthews seemed to like the idea of King County stewarding the historic site, but after nine months of negotiations, they couldn’t reach a deal. “I feel like we really bent over backwards to come to a resolution on all the concerns they raised,” she said. Neither Mathews nor Bob Krinsky, Island Landmarks’ attorney, returned calls from The Beachcomber. Matthews replied to an email with one comment: “The Beachcomber never lets the facts get in the way of a good story.” Now, the Friends of Mukai say the condition of the farm and garden has not

The barrelling plant was privately owned by Matthews and Nelson until they sold it to islander Frank Zellerhoff Jr. last year. The Friends group has hoped to take ownership of that property as well, something they said Zellerhoff is open to. Since last year, Zellerhoff has moved some of his construction business to the barrelling plant and is renting out the rest of the building, though he declined to say who his renters are. However, Vashon Youth Baseball & Softball (VYBS) recently announced a meeting at the barrelling plant, and Cheryl Pruett, the group’s vice president, said VYBS is raising money and has a $3,000 matching donation to outfit a portion of the building for batting cages. For his part, Zellerhoff said he hadn’t heard of the Friends group’s project to study the barrelling plant and he wasn’t sure if he’d be open to it. Asked if he’d consider selling the place, he said, “Anything is for sale if the price is right.” True, with King County, said DNRP will be watching closely in the coming months to see what happens with the lawsuit. If there’s another opportunity to settle, she said, the county will still consider purchasing the house. “The county is still standing by to see if they can help,” she said.

Born 2011, SHAWDOWPAW is very playful and loves to chase anything, whether it’s a bug flying around the house or simply a piece of yarn being dragged around (whether on purpose or by accident). He is very patient and doesn’t scratch or bite people, even when having a bath! He is afraid of dogs and does not like loud noises. His favorite place to sleep is in a basket of freshly washed laundry but he’ll settle for any place he can snuggle in. Born 2007, My name used to be Romeo because I had a lot of cat girlfriends before my little operation. Now I prefer the company of you two-legged types. I’m waiting at the door when volunteers come to the room I live in, and I like to sit on laps. Some people believe that having pets is good for your health, so why not give this lover a chance to lower your BP (blood pressure)?

Dear VIPP, Born 2005, Rogue came to VIPP in February of 2014 looking a little worse for the wear having lived his life as an outdoor cat. He was extremely shy, hiding in his cubby most of the time. Over time, Rogue has become more self-assured and likes to see the volunteers when they come with his daily meals. Rogue is looking for a warm safe indoor home with peeps who can be patient with him as he becomes more comfortable around humans.
