he Seattle Seahawks finished the preseason 2-2 August 28 losing 41-31 to the Oakland Raiders. But all eyes will be on Seattle as the National Football League regular season starts Thursday when the Hawks face the Green Bay Packers. And no 12th Man will be more prepared for the first game of the season than a group of friends who consider themselves to be an “extension of the Seahawks.” This group of friends unveiled their double decker, Seahawk-decked out bus to family and friends Thursday in Lake Tapps. “The Beast” as the group calls the bus is not named after the Hawks’ beloved running back Marshawn Lynch. One of the owners, Gary, said they chose the name after the President’s

limo. Most of those connected with the group of owners hold season tickets but before each game they will be enjoying all the amenities this bus has to offer. It houses three TVs, a beer pong table, a replica Lombardi trophy, King Dome chairs, a bar, goal posts, a graveyard equipped with tombstones from past opponents and much more. This is the second bus the group has worked with. The first bus was totaled by a logging truck on its way up from San Francisco. “It was jinxed,” Gary said. From the design to the finished product, it has taken six months to complete this ultimate tailgating bus. “We have one common goal, to support the best team in the NFL,” Gary said.

“The Beast” made its debut Thursday before the final preseason game to family and friends of the group of Seahawk fans who own this double-decker tailgating bus. A replica Lombardi trophy, bottom left, sits in a trophy case as one steps onto the bus. A vintage Seahawk helmet as well as chairs from the King Dome, bottom right, sit in the bottom level of the bus. Photos by Sarah Wehmann

Mayor celebrates third year as cancer free By Ray Still

onney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson recently celebrated his third cancer-free year by having a barbecue at his house on Aug. 17. He invited close friends, family, some nurses from his time in the hospital and the woman who helped save his life. Gail Gardner didn’t know Johnson when she decided to donate her stem cells – all she knew was her stem cells were being donated to a leukemia patient. Gardner became a donor because she read a story about a mother who died of cancer after three potential donors backed out of the process. “It was an emotional, impulsive decision,”

she said. “I vowed that if I was a match with someone, I wouldn’t back out.” Across the country, Johnson was given an estimation of a year to live without a stem cell transplant, and already had two donors back out on him. “I was worried,” he said. “They said I would have a few hundred matches.” Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) matching is used to determine donor/patient matches for bone marrow transplants. Luckily for Johnson, Gardner’s cells were a near match for his – on a 10 point scale, Gardner’s cells matched Johnson’s on nine points. After donating her cells, Gardner said she was eager to hear about the results because she felt “invested in the future of the recipient.”

However, Johnson received Gardner’s contact information a year and a half after the transplant. Gardner’s contact information was misplaced in the system, and Johnson and his family finally acquired it in spring of 2013. When the hospital released Gardner’s information, Johnson immediately sent her a postcard and letter only to have it returned and stamped as undelivered. As it turns out, Gardner had moved from her home in D.C. to Seattle in January 2013, unaware her stem cells were donated to a man just an hour south of the city. Eventually, Cancer Care Alliance helped Johnson track down Gardner’s personal email. Gardner recalled the email “came

Sumner grad elected Student Body President for Zags By Ray Still Staff Writer

Conner House, a Sumner High School alum, was elected Student Body President at Gonzaga University last spring. House, 21, said he starting thinking about student government in high

school. He played football for three years at Sumner High School, but decided to run for Associated Student Body in his senior year. “I found a calling through ASB that I didn’t have on the field,” House said. “It was a better way to build myself up.” House was admitted to

Gonzaga in 2011, where he lived in a dorm building for three years, eventually becoming a resident assistant. House also helped put together a Young Life program at Gonzaga, which is a ministry program for college students. House ran for Student Body President in his junior year because as

president, it would be “an easy way to reach out to people” on campus and make Gonzaga a better school. He said his three bigs goals for this year is to focus on making Gonzaga a more environmentally sustainable school, work on off-campus safety and look for ways students can work with the local com-

munity and bring together “two separate communities that are sometimes at odds with each other.”

Wealthy working to alter gun laws Our state’s super wealthy social changers are at it again. Two years after their money helped make charter schools possible, the Ballmers, the Gateses and the Nick Hanauers are using some of their loose millions to try to tighten gun laws in Washington. They’ve made six- and seven-digit contributions to the campaign for Initiative 594, the measure on the November ballot which would expand the state’s background check law to cover most gun sales conducted Jerry Cornfield, at gun shows and Columnist online. Their checks went to the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility whose strategists will, sometime after Labor Day, start spending the dough on television commercials claiming wider use of background checks will bolster public safety without infringing on anyone’s Second Amendment rights. The alliance can afford to wait because it is already getting a boost from a million-dollar ad campaign paid for by its nonprofit alter ego, the Center for Gun Responsibility. Since Aug. 8, the center has been running dozens of 30-second commercials as part of an “education” campaign dubbed “Background Checks Make A Difference.” The effort is set to end Sept. 5. The ads stress the value of background checks for enhancing public safety but never mention the ballot measure that its political self is promoting. What’s nice

Congress should put the country first “While American politics has always been a shrill, partisan, and ugly business going back to the Founding Fathers, we have rarely been so polarized and so unable to execute even the basic functions of the government, much less tackle the most difficult and divisive problems facing the country.” These are the words of Robert M. Gates, former secretary of defense under George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Gates goes on to give six reasons for this polarization of Congress that he saw under both presidents in his book, “Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War.” The first reason Gates gives for the polarization is the constant “take-noprisoners” attitude that has driven the moderates in both parties out of Congress. According to Gates, the very definition of moderation has transformed into something nearer to a person “lacking principles” and offering compromise tantamount to “selling out.” These changes in attitude have evolved over decades. The second reason given for these changes is gerrymandering, the creation of congressional districts by state partisans, in such a way that only 50

to 60 seats of the 435 in the House of Representatives are not “safe” for either party. The last redistricting occurred after the 2010 census. I remember how the voting districts were determined by horse-trading between Democrats and Republicans. The results were that the incumbents were given virtually guaranteed seats in their districts, making me wonder why I should bother to vote for any candidate for the House. During the Cold War that lasted from 1945 to the fall of the USSR in 1991, there was a need for the two political parties to cooperate. When the Soviet Union collapsed, there was no longer the pressure to work together for the common good. This is Gates’ third reason for the current dysfunction. It is apparent that being the only

superpower has not been good for this nation. As a fourth reason, Gates bemoans the loss of power by committee chairs who could wheel and deal to come to agreement and to enforce their decisions. This changed when chairs were appointed solely by seniority. The need to constantly raise campaign money changed the dynamics and the priority of elected officials in Congress. This is Gates’ fifth reason. The imposition of the three-day Congressional workweek from Tuesday to Thursday contributed to the weakening of bipartisanship. It used to be that members of Congress would room together, eat and play cards together, building rapport and trust with each other in the process. Gates attributes his sixth cause to the changing media. There used to be only three major networks and a handful of newspapers that filtered out the negatives. Now there are hundreds of cable networks, blogs and the infamous 24-hour news cycle that both dilutes and ignores the journalists who write. Too much competition and information can be as bad as too little.

Love the low-maintenance, high-color garden

So how does your garden grow? If you think you work too hard for too little return on your energy investment it may be time to evaluate your plants and maintenance this month. Consider a landscape makeover that will give year-long color without the yearly planting of annuals or maintenance of traditional perennial plants. If you can’t make it to one of the classes I teach on this topic, then here are some of the secrets to a successful designs for low maintenance, high color gardens in western Washington:

The Compleat Home Gardener

Choose plants with great foliage

Flowers do not last as long as great-looking foliage. In western Marianne Binetti Washington we are Columnist blessed with the perfect climate for heucheras, and these spectacular foliage plants can be used to highlight fall foliage or add drama to spring bulbs. Simply label the corner Heucheras can also be used with the Japanese maple the in containers and they will fall garden, the east side of look great even during the the house with rhodies and winter months. Add Heavenly Hellebores for Winter blooms

The new hellebores come in shades of pink, green, speckled and burgundy colors as well as the classic white. These evergreen, deer-, slug- and droughtresistant perennials love our cool, moist weather and do not need to be divided, fertilized or watered as much as other perennials plants. (In fact, you should never divide a hellebore – get new plants from the seedlings that sprout around the base of happy mother plants.) You can grow hellebores in pots for winter blooms near the front entry as these plants will flower in the shade or partial sun. Once you have

hellebores and heucheras to liven your winter garden you’ll be able to survive our gray days of winter.

Create a Hydrangea Room

Hydrangeas are another plant that love our climate and new varieties make these old-fashioned shrubs the new-fangled darlings of the low-maintenance gardener. Dwarf hydrangeas are easy to tuck into shaded spots for late summer and fall color and hydrangeas bloom best with no pruning – ever. The problem with hydrangeas is that they lose their leaves in the winter and that most varieties want to grow into 12 foot shrubs. In my garden I used hydrangeas as the walls for an outdoor room. Hidden behind a hedge of evergreen arborvitae you can’t see the leafless hydrangeas in the winter but step through the archway in the hedge and you enter an opening that is surrounded by blooming

hydrangeas in the summer and fall. I’ve added hellebores at the base of the hydrangeas and a few heucheras for winter color. This makes a nice color surprise as you enter the area on a cold winter day. Hydrangeas, heucheras and hellebores – three great plants to add to your landscape now for more year round color. • • • Marianne Binetti has a degree in horticulture from Washington State University and is the author of “Easy Answers for Great Gardens” and several other books. Numbers change and schools move in SPSL By Kevin Hanson

ranges are shuffled every time the exercise is completed, so the 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A classifications each account for 17 percent of the state’s schools; the smaller 1B and 2B classifications get 16 percent each. Some schools choose to opt up for a variety of reasons, playing outside their classification. Locally, Bonney Lake High School fits that description; despite 2A numbers, those who control Panther athletics prefer playing in the SPSL 3A. Compared with last spring, both South Puget Sound League divisions now have a new look. Sumner

Senior Writer

With the launch of the fall 2014 athletic season, changes have come to both the South Puget Sound League 3A and 2A ranks as one team moved up a classification, a couple moved down and another simply changed one address for another. Change comes when the Washing ton Interscholastic Activities Association looks at enrollment figures every two years, attempting to keep its six classifications evenly balanced. Enrollment

has grown and has departed the 2A ranks for the 3A. Taking the Spartans’ place will be River Ridge, which was granted membership. Through the spring 2014 season, River Ridge competed in the 2A Evergreen Conference. The biggest change has come to the SPSL 3A, which has grown from six to eight teams. Decatur’s numbers increased enough to send the Gators to a 4A league, but both Auburn High and Auburn Mountainview have dropped from 4A to 3A.

White River senior named All-American By Sarah Wehmann Staff Writer

After participating in the Stars and Stripes camp in July, White River senior Hannah Lewandowski was selected to the USA

rugby girls high school AllAmerican team. When she found out she was named to the All-American team, Lewandowski said she was “excited!” “I want to play in the

World Cup when I’m ready and this is one step closer to reaching my dreams!,” she wrote in an email. Aside from this honor, she has also been nominated as top 15 in the nation. “(This) is a great honor,”

SCHOOL DISTRICT VISIT US ONLINE: SUMNERSD.ORG

SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE The 2014-15 school budget is designed to support educational initiatives, district goals, and reflects our commitment to prepare all students for a successful life and multiple opportunities after high school. As educators of children in our area, we are grateful for the many ways in which we receive support from the community. Sumner School District is deeply committed to wise financial management while providing the highest level of service to students and families. Excellent instruction in every classroom every day is the core of our work. Sumner School District is committed to use formative and summative data to guide in the development of programs and services, ensuring every student is receiving an excellent program of study. Even with the many changes we encounter from the State and Federal departments of education, we remain focused on our students and their strengths and needs. We are “Growing our Future” and will follow a pathway of sound planning and implementation of successful, proven practices. Preparing and planning for 2014-15 has required thoughtful study and preparation. As our district grows, and we are waiting for the next legislative biennium decisions, we carefully prioritize where to most efficiently spend money to best serve students. The beginning of the funding of the McCleary decision, combined with careful budgeting, has allowed Sumner School District to provide free fullday kindergarten. Also, we have established a “Schools of Hope,” program to serve students who need extra support to get on track to graduate. Through teamwork and collaboration, we settled five collective bargaining agreements with our employees in 2013-14. There is much to be proud of in Sumner School District – and a great deal of work to be accomplished to stay at the forefront of providing a first-rate education to our students.

COACHES OF THE YEAR Kristin Chapman, Sumner High School, and Anthony Clarke, Bonney Lake High School, were selected by their peers and the District Athletics Department as recipients of the 2013-14 Sumner School District Coach of the Year Award! Chapman coaches boys and girls cross country and girls track teams at Sumner High School. Clarke coached wrestling at Bonney Lake High School for eighteen years. The program has recognized coaches who build positive character traits and citizenship in their athletes for over 17 years.

As superintendent, I consider it one of my most important roles to develop a budget that supports quality experiences for all students and ensures excellent instruction for every child, every day, in every classroom, from grades K – 12. Our student achievement remains strong, and continues to improve. Sumner School District has some of the best teachers and schools in Washington State. We believe in accountability and welcome community members, legislators, and families into our schools. When Washington State lost the No Child Left Behind waiver from the US Department of Education, it did not change the caliber nor quality of work we are doing in Sumner School District; it only changed the labels placed upon schools by politicians far removed from the classroom. Rest assured, we remain a premier district with outstanding teachers, administrators, and support staff and we continue to improve every year. Our ranking as a district is climbing, and we believe it will continue to follow that trend as we work hard every day to provide outstanding service and education.

With the beginning of the new school year, the district is transitioning to a new look and feel. A new district logo was unveiled to staff at the annual convocation event held August 25. As part of the new Web site survey, feedback was received on updating the logo from administration, teachers, parents, community members and students. District Communications Manager, Sarah Gillispie, comments “The upcoming launch of the new district Web site later this year provides the perfect opportunity for us to update our look. The new logo incorporates design elements from the previous logo created in 1988.” PAID ADVERTISEMENT.

Equal Opportunity: The Sumner School District complies with all applicable federal and state rules and regulations and does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, families with children, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, age, honorably discharged veteran or military status, or the presence of any sensory, mental, or physical disability or the use of a trained dog guide or service animal by a person with a disability. This holds true for all district employment opportunities. Inquiries regarding compliance and/or grievance procedures should be directed to the school district’s Equal Opportunity Officer and/or Section 504/ADA coordinator, telephone 253 891-6000.

DISTRICT LAUNCHES TEACHER TUESDAY! Teacher Tuesday is a weekly opportunity for the district to highlight a teacher in our schools making a difference. This is our way of recognizing the hard work teachers do all year long and say “thank you!”

The District hired eighty-six new teachers to serve Sumner and Bonney Lake schools for the 2014-15 school year. Teachers were welcomed by the School Board during New Staff Orientation. Approximately twothirds of the new staff members replace recently retired teachers and teacher resignations. About twenty-seven additional teachers were hired because of increased need due to growing student enrollment. This is the largest group of new employees the district has hired since 2005.

VOTER REGISTRATION To register to vote in Pierce County, applicants must be at least 18 years old by the date of the next election; be a United States citizen and a Pierce County resident; and, not presently have civil rights denied as a result of a felony conviction. Voter registration forms are available in all school offices and the District Office, as well as the Pierce County Election Department.

SCHOOL DISTRICT CALENDAR

The first teacher recognized for Teacher Tuesday in the Sumner School District was Bonney Lake High School teacher, Lindsey Stevens, for increasing the conversation about Common Core. As a teacher leader in the Puget Sound area, Lindsey writes bimonthly blog posts for CORElaborate, an online common core resource for teachers and parents provided by the Puget Sound Educational Service District. Lindsey is also currently featured on the Gates Foundation website explaining how social media elevates the common core conversation among teachers. To nominate a teacher for Teacher Tuesday, email teachertuesday@sumnersd.org.

BUS SAFETY INSPECTION The Washington State Patrol’s annual safety inspection of the District’s bus fleet rated all buses as passing and earned the District Transportation Department a rating of exceptional. The staff, mechanics and drivers at the Transportation Department have a well-earned reputation for earning high marks during this rigorous review process. Our buses travel over 650,000 miles each year, transporting over 4,000 students safely each day.

SCHOOL BOARD ROLL OF HONOR

1060398

At the August 20 board meeting the School Board recognized Brandon Frederick for the School Board Roll of Honor. The Roll of Honor recognizes accomplishments, achievements, awards and other notable activities of and by students, staff and educators, presented by Sumner School Board Superintendent, Dr. Sara Johnson.

The 2014-15 school year calendar with key dates for the coming year and information about academic programs was mailed to all families of registered students. Bus transportation schedules are not included in this mailing. Please check the Web site for route information. If you would like to receive a calendar, please contact the District Office by calling 253-891-6000.

The World Affairs Council honored Bonney Lake High School Social Studies Teacher, Brandon Frederick, with the 2014-15 World Educator Award. Since 1997, the World Affairs Council has recognized a local K-12 teacher who demonstrates leadership in connecting students to the world and contributes to the development of new programs and resources that enable other teachers to do the same. Superintendent, Dr. Sara Johnson, notes “Brandon is passionate about what is going on around the world. He brings this passion into his classroom by teaching our students about world affairs and inspiring cultural awareness.”

Friday night lights returns Sept. 5 as the Bonney Lake Panthers and Sumner Spartans take the field for the first game of the 2014-2015 season. The Panthers travel to play Bellarmine Prep in a nonleague match up against the Lions. “This will be a good test out of the gate for us,” coach Jason Silbaugh said. Silbaugh returns for his third year as head coach of the Panthers. Last year, Bonney Lake started the season 0-5 and then finished the season winning their last five in a row. The Panthers lost to Peninsula in the round of 16 to end their season. This year the league will look different. The Panthers will remain in the South Puget Sound League 3A and the Spartans will join them from the 2A. They will also face Auburn, Auburn

last year for setting a good example of leadership for the other players to follow and carry on this coming year. The Panthers return four offensive starters and five defensive starters. Returning players entering their senior year are quarterback Isaiah Weed, running back Ethan McElderry, defensive end Riley Miller, receiver and defensive back Dillion Jordon, nose tackle and guard Jordan Zimmerman and linebacker Baily Sulfridge. Silbaugh said Miller is a 4.0 student, student body president for Bonney Lake and

FOOTBALL FROM 16 has also spent some time on the east coast at Ivy League schools. “I would like to see him go play for Yale,” Silbaugh said. Silbaugh added Jordon also has the “potential to play at the next level.” Zimmerman missed his junior year because of surgery but is back for the Panthers and Silbaugh said he will be a two-way starter. Along with the returning seniors Silbaugh mentioned a few players to keep your eye on throughout the season. Silbaugh mentioned sophomore Jason Day who will play safety and running back for the Panthers, Ethen Koepke who will start as tail-

back and middle linebacker, sophomore Caleb Davis who will likely start both ways as offensive lineman and defensive end and junior Jordan Cozzi who will be a two-way starter playing corner and receiver. Koepke had a hearing August 28 to see if he will be eligible to play the first game. At the time of press, it was still unknown what the verdict was. “Outside of our seniors, we have a young team,” Silbaugh said. Fall camp for Bonney Lake ended August 29 with a black versus white scrimmage. “It will be an experiment, to see how the players react to game-like play,” Silbaugh said. When game week begins, Silbaugh said everything

starts to click more. The Panthers will spend time focusing on their opponent for each week. The Panthers and Spartans always play each other every year in the Sunset Bowl but for the last four years, Sumner has been in a different league than Bonney Lake. This year, playing each other in the second to last game of the regular season, the Sunset Bowl could mean more than the in district rivalry game it has been for the past few years. The Sunset Bowl could help secure a spot in the post season for one or both of the teams. Regarding the rivalry game, Silbaugh said “we want to treat every game the same, treat it like any other game.” He added he wants the team to enjoy the moment

when playing Sumner in week eight. “I’m excited to see what happens,” he said. “Many may not give us much credit but we want to focus on us

and do what we do. Good things will happen.”

FOOTBALL FROM 17 Lynden in the quarter finals. Sumner graduated three key players. “They may have been the three best players I have ever had,” Ross said. The three he is referring to are running back DeJon Lynch, offensive lineman and linebacker Austin Striplin and running back Brandon Tuilaepa. Ross said between Lynch and Tuilaepa, they rushed for

more than 3,000 yards last year. “It’s hard to replace that,” Ross said. “But we have guys who can fill in.” Captains for the upcoming season are returning starters senior quarterback Chase Torgison and senior middle linebacker Jesse Lindahl. Last season, Lindahl had 100 tackles, Ross said. And Torgison, a four year starter for Sumner, returns for his final year at the helm for the Spartans. Senior wide receiver

enter into the 2014-2015 season, Ross said. When it comes to playing other teams that are new to the league, it is different. “We don’t have film of us versus them, Ross said. “We haven’t seen or played these teams in years. They have unfamiliar systems, teams and coaches. We have to be on point. Ross added, as coaches and players it will be nice to “dominate in the 3A and show everyone we can play

against anybody. Similar to Silbaugh, Ross said the in district rivalry between Bonney Lake and Sumner “always matters. He added, it is a “good healthy rivalry for the district. A lot of the players on both teams have grown up with each other, playing both on the same team and on the opposing team as each other. “It’s a fun game, Ross said. Week three of the season starts league play for both the Panthers and Spartans. Bonney Lake will first face Auburn Mountainview and Sumner will play Enumclaw.

Of late the state’s electorate has been in the mood for reshaping society in ways the government won’t. They’ve privatized liquor and legalized marijuana, charter schools and gay marriage. Last year, voters seemed primed to pass a food-labeling initiative until opponents shelled out $22 million to successfully defeat it. The NRA can’t fork out that kind of money, nor must

IMPORTANT LAKE TAPPS INFORMATION: LAKE TAPPS TO BE DRAWN DOWN SEPTEMBER 15, 2014! C A S C A D E W AT E R A L L I A N C E

URGENT!

Lake Level Information for Homeowners on Lake Tapps

Cascade’s White River Lake Tapps improvement projects are underway. No water has been added to the lake since July. While it is expected that recreational lake levels will be maintained through Labor Day, they will be reduced immediately after.

HOMEOWNERS TAKE NOTE: Cascade has set MONDAY SEPT. 15 to begin this drawdown, during which the lake level will be reduced by up to a foot a day. Residents should note their own unique conditions in their locations and make the determination when to remove their boats from the lake. While the drawdown will begin after Labor Day, some areas may become too shallow for some uses more quickly than others and homeowners should gauge accordingly. 1121679

destructive, lying, killer. I lost my cousin to it. He died when he relapsed after nearly nine months of sobriety. I have friends here in Enumclaw whose sons and daughters have recently overdosed on heroin and died. And recently I have been introduced to family after family who are struggling to deal with the chaos, shame, confusion, fear and anger of having one of their family members addicted to either heroin or meth. Today I want to tell you that you are not alone and that there is hope. I see drug and alcohol addiction as a vice of the devil he uses to rob, kill and destroy. They are subtle in their deception masquerading as fun, excitement or YOLO (You Only Live Once), while all the while stealing hours, days and years of your life. These addictions thieve away your joy, peace, beauty, confidence, innocence, moral judgment and integrity without much of a fight. While you waste time defending them, insisting there is no problem, they mercilessly destroy your relationships, bank accounts, careers and future. Typically you end up estranged from the people who love you, in and out of jail and eventually dead because the

intent of the devil was never anything less. Then, after all of that ,the enemy works on your mind. He heaps upon you guilt, shame and condemnation; too much for any person to carry. He tells you that you have no hope, that no one loves you and that God is not real. The devil is a liar. Not only is God real but he loves and cares for you! Our God is a restorer. He makes beauty from ashes and can take the rubble of our lives and rebuild it. He will restore to you the years the devil has stolen and the dreams he destroyed. God brings life to dry bones makes the crooked way straight again. Without God we are powerless. We are powerless to change, powerless to fix our lives and powerless to fix our kids. It’s OK to realize you are powerless. That is often the very thing that prompts us to cry out for help from the one who holds all power in his hand. We need God and he will never turn his back on you. When we turn to God we find that he never left us and that he loves us. Simply by believing in him we receive forgiveness for all of our sins and failures. Further than forgiveness the word of God says that we are literally separated from our sin. That means that never again will our fail-

SUPERINTEND. MSG. GOING OLD SCHOOL NEW GMS LEADERS OKTOBERFEST COMMUNITY ACTIVI. WRCAP SPORTS POWER OF TEAM PLAYGROUND

MESSAGE FROM JANEL As I spent time with staff at new teacher training and the events associated with welcoming our students to the 2014-15 school year, I had the chance to reflect on how blessed my life and the lives of our White River teachers are because We “get to” be educators; to perhaps become a hero to some student each day. William Graves, the editor of National Geographic, highlights the value of teaching and teachers by recalling the story of the internationally acclaimed violinist, Jascha Heifetz, who left performing to become a professor at UCLA. When asked why he gave up performing to become a teacher, Heifetz said that he remembered his Russian violin teacher who constantly told him that if he worked hard enough, someday he would become good enough to teach! This profession gives us the wonderful opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of children and families. Teaching is a difficult and complex job. When the grade level or course specific standards are linked to a caring relationship with a staff member test scores soar – students learn. In this issue we’ve highlighted the story of one teacher team, the White River High School Biology team. They’ve taken accountability for learning to heart and their value as educators-role models to our kids is measured far beyond a test score. They’re creating successful learners. Enjoy reading the story of this team. We’re also spotlighting the positive changes in our Community Activities Program.

GOING OLD SCHOOL

September 12 at Sheets Field Kickoff 7:00 p.m. White River vs. Lindbergh We’ll be going “old school” with our annual non-league football game played on the grass at Sheets Field. Football team march to the stadium starts at 5:30 p.m. along Main Street. See you at the game!

NEW LEADERSHIP AT GLACIER MIDDLE SCHOOL

If you believe it is important to help children and young men and women acquire the knowledge, skills, and dispositions essential to productive and satisfying lives, then consider being a teacher. If you burst with passion for your subject and want to share that passion with others, then consider being a teacher. If you truly enjoy kids, if you are able to see the best in each of them, if you are willing to persist when confronted by their recalcitrance or indifference, then consider being a teacher. If you believe that an educated citizenry is critical to the well being of the nation, then consider being a teacher. If you feel joy in seeing students learn to believe in themselves because you helped them achieve what they felt was beyond their grasp, then consider being a teacher.

Glacier Middle School welcomes new administrative team! Principal - Robin Cerato Gibbs, center Assistant Principal - LeeAnn Alfano Tier 2 & 3 Education Director - Adam Uhler

If you recognize that giving of yourself to others and developing others can be one of the most significant and fulfilling ways in which to live your life, then consider being a teacher. Parents thank you for sending us what you value most – your children. We’re honored and ready!

THE POWER OF THE TEAM

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

White River Community Activities Program strives to provide quality recreation opportunities outside of the classroom. Our program spans from youth sports leagues and camps, to Kids Klub before and after school care, to active summer programming, dance and the arts. Our main goal is to build healthy families and provide ways for children to develop new skills and interests that open the door to lifelong healthy habits. The youth sports program is a prime example of this, with many different sporting options. Our leagues are designed to provide a positive place to play, while building skills and interests in healthy activities. We depend largely on dedicated volunteers to make our programs successful, and are very grateful for those who donate their time. At WRCAP we are always looking for new ways to engage youth. We have had some great success in expanding dance and drama programs in the recent years. If you have an idea for new programs or see a need for a program in our community, we would welcome your input.

Did you know?

WRCAP offers a safe and affordable before and after school care option for children, serving all four of our elementary schools. Our Kids Klub program starts at 6 a.m. and is available until 6:30 p.m. to meet the needs of working families. This includes late start and early release days. There are five options for enrollment to provide families with the flexibility they need. At Kids Klub, children are cared for by kind and compassionate staff who provide engaging recreational activities and experiences, such as group games, art projects, homework help and other structured activities. Kids Klub provides light healthy snacks in the safe environment of the school campus.

In the White River School District, teachers and administrators collaborating together in highly effective teams has been an important practice to ensure all students are continually supported in learning at high levels. One of the hallmarks of an effective PLC is data that supports students’ demonstration of proficiency or mastery on all of the courses’ essential standards. The science team at White River High School continues to refine their curriculum design, instructional strategies, as well as formative and common assessments, to target those important standards and provide meaningful feedback for their students. The Physical Science and Biology teams work together to ensure that all students taking the Biology End of Course (EOC) Exam have had multiple opportunities to interact with the content before taking this assessment, which will be required for a high school diploma beginning with the Class of 2015. One of the greatest celebrations of this team is the student achievement data from the Science HSPE and Biology EOC. Over the past five years, scores have increased from only 28.2% of students meeting standard on the exam in 20082009 to over 80% for the 2013-3014 school year. The relentless focus of this team in supporting each and every student skill by skill and standard by standard has played an integral role in these continued improvements. We are proud of the work of this team!

White River School District has completed construction of an accessible playground that is also developmentally appropriate for preschool aged children. The playground is located at Mountain Meadow Elementary School and will serve students enrolled in the District’s Developmental Preschool Program. The playground was funded with the support of the Mountain Meadow PTA, the White River Education Foundation, HELAC Corporation, and the White River School District. The playground provides an outdoor learning environment accessible to all preschool age children regardless of disability where they can practice social, motor, and communication skills. Like all the District outdoor equipment, the playground is available to the community outside school hours and on weekends. 1035892
