Officials say they will work to address concerns with the plan By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer
As soon as next January, Vashon’s paramedics will be replaced by a rotating crew from King County, as the island’s paramedic program is incorporated into the larger south King County emergency medical system. The board of Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR) voted on Tuesday, Aug. 19, to move ahead with a proposal to absorb Vashon’s eight paramedics into the South King County Medic One program. Many say they expect the change will improve island response to serious medical emergencies by providing former Vashon responders more experience in busy south King County and by allowing two paramedics to respond together at all times. “I applaud you. It’s a tough decision to make, but it’s an important one,” said John Herbert, chief of King County Medic One, at Tuesday’s meeting after the board voted. Several people from both VIFR and King County at the meeting said there is still some concern over how paramedics under the new system will respond to second calls on Vashon. However, they called the plan an improvement over the island’s current system and said they would spend the following months attempting to work out some of the details. “We have time to collectively work on those challenges,” said VIFR Chief Hank Lipe. On Sunday, more than 1,000 motorcyclists gathered in downtown Vashon for the Vintage Motorcycle Enthusiasts’ 32nd annual Isle of Vashon TT. Islander and longtime member of the club, Jody Heintzman, said 750 people registered for the event, about 100 less than last year. It was a safe event, he said, with no problems reported. “Everybody seemed to have a good time,” he added. Those who register participate in a poker run, drawing playing cards at designated points along the island ride, and the person with the best poker hand wins. Following the ride, which takes motorcyclists from town to the west side, Tahlequah and Dockton, many participants gather at The Sportsmen’s Club for a barbecue and motorcycle-related games and races. The motorcycle club typically hosts the event the weekend before or after Labor Day, drawing many onlookers and some criticism on Vashon for not divulging the date to anyone but club members. Heintzman says they do this to keep the event from being overrun — something that has happened in the past — and to keep the focus on vintage bikes. Still, for motorcycle enthusiasts of all kinds, there are plenty of bikes to look at and wish for, with the latest gleaming bikes parked next to classics from the past, like the Indian above.

Just a few years ago, several island preschools were serving fewer children than in years past, but preschools appear to be flourishing again, with three new schools set to open this fall and three others reporting significant changes. While there are no hard facts about whether Vashon’s demographics are changing, anecdotally, some say that the island is seeing an influx of families with young children, possibly the result of the strengthening economy. For years, the island has had a variety of preschools to fit individual needs of families, and now the options have expanded and include several more possibilities, ranging from one set on a farm to a free,
bilingual program funded by the state for children in need.
Honeybee Playschool In the Gold Beach neighborhood, Honeybee Playschool will open its morning preschool on Sept. 9 with teacher Anna Sander. Sander, who grew up on the island, attended The Barbie School as a child. Zoe Cheroke, the head of that school for 39 years, retired earlier this year and mentored Sander as she prepared to open her own school. The timing was not coincidental, Sander said, as she and Cheroke have talked about Sander opening a school for some time, and Cheroke encouraged her to begin now. SEE PRESCHOOLS, 16

Vashon Community Care (VCC) will soon be looking for a new administrator, as current administrator Janelle Ansell has given her notice and will leave next month. A press release last week said Ansell is leaving to pursue other opportunities. Reached Monday, Ansell declined to comment about her resignation. VCC board president Valerie Howe, who assumed her position last month after serving on the board for one year, expressed appreciation for Ansell and her tenure at the center. “We watched her do some wonderful things,” Howe said. “We appreciate the work she did.” Truman O’Brien, the head of the new Vashon Community Care Foundation, said everyone wishes

Ansell came to VCC in January of 2011 and served during the refinancing of its HUD loan last year and spearheaded the creation of VCC’s rehabilitation services for residents and other community members. Judy Beggs, who previously held a nursing leadership role at VCC, will assume operational responsibilities for VCC while the recruitment pro-
cess for a new administrator is under way. Beggs is pursuing an internship to receive her administrator’s license, Howe noted. “We are trying to catch our breath while we make ourselves stable in terms of who is going to do what, and then we will start the (search) process,” Howe said. Howe noted that VCC is in a time of transition in several ways, having recently lost some board members and welcomed others, including Shawn Hoffman and Susan Hanson, who were recently elected. A strategic planning process is also under way. Despite the financial benefits of refinancing, Howe said VCC must still raise $300,000 every year. So far this year, she said, $102,000 has been raised, and fundraising will continue. “We need more awareness about what we do here,” Howe said. “It is different than what happens in the rest of the country.”

Express Cuisine goes up for sale By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer
After a year at the helm of Express Cuisine, island chef Chris Lueck is selling the business because of health problems. Lueck has been a cook since 1974, and like most culinary school graduates, he said, he had always wanted to own his own restaurant. That dream became a reality almost exactly one year ago, but came to an abrupt end earlier this month when an orthopedic specialist informed Lueck that he needs to have both knees replaced. His days of standing to cook and work for 12 to 16 hours at a stretch are behind him, he said. “I thought I would get Six Million Dollar Man knees,” Lueck said, “but the doctor told me I will never have the knees of a 20 year old.” In an interview last week, Lueck said that word of his situation has begun to spread and some people have already expressed interest in buying the restaurant, but the process is in the very early stages. This sudden change of direction has also brought several plans Lueck had for Express Cuisine to an end. When he bought the business, he also bought the recipes that former owners Jim Riggsbee and Jocelyn Savoie used for their long tenure there. While Lueck said that food was excellent, he wanted to serve his own creations. He had recently begun serving an Asian-

Chris Lueck inspired lunch, an homage to his Japanese mother, who he says was an excellent cook, and he had hoped to install a wood-fired oven. “Had I not gotten injured, that would have been my next step,” he said. He planned to close for three weeks in the fall, like the former owners had done, and with the reopening he intended to introduce table service and a whole new menu featuring Asian food. “That was my original idea,” he said. “Had I not bought Express Cuisine, my restaurant would have been Asian-inspired. ... All of this is not happening.” Lueck is a familiar face to many on the island, given his long work history on Vashon. After working offisland at Whole Foods for several years, he became the deli manager at Thriftway, a position he apparently had not considered before it became available. “I traveled so much, I didn’t even realize the island had a grocery store,” he joked.
Once hired, he said he built the plans for the deli, bakery, cheese island and food tasting counter there. After two years in that position, he became the store’s wine steward. He missed cooking, though, he said, and eventually became the manager of the Mileta Creek Restaurant at the Vashon Golf & Swim Club. While there, he began looking for a restaurant he could make his own. His wife Lauri Mitchel suggested he talk to Riggsbee and Savoie, who had planned to retire fairly soon. “We just kind of hit it off,” he said. “I ended up buying the restaurant.” Though it was only for a year, Lueck said owning Express Cuisine allowed him to pay homage to his parents. His father’s artwork hangs on the walls, and his recent lunch offerings — and interrupted plans — were a tribute to his mother. Looking ahead, Lueck said he is not sure what he will do next and added the realization that he could not continue in his former path was difficult. “I was in a funk. I did not want to face reality,” he said. His wife made several sacrifices over the years so that he could open a restaurant one day, he said, and he credits her with helping him begin to view his circumstances differently. “A window of opportunity will open that I never expected,” he said. “You have to put a positive spin on these things.”
Homeshare program seeks homeowners with room to spare for renters By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer
Vashon Household, the local nonprofit organization dedicated to affordable housing, is looking for islanders willing to rent out rooms in their homes. Barbara Brown, Vashon Household’s assistant property manager, said that the organization has several people seeking housing as part of its Homeshare program but does not have any rooms available for them. “They are all very personable people,” she said. “I have done complete background checks and interviewed references.” Brown noted that many people who have rooms to rent do it through other methods, such as VashonAll or Craigslist, and that the Homeshare program, now two years old, has been slow to take off. However, there are several advantages to renting through Vashon Household, she said, including that renters are carefully vetted and those who rent receive information on how to set up agreements, solve problems
that might arise and make clear both parties’ responsibilities and expectations. Brown said that most people in the program can pay between $300 and $500 per month in rent, and some are also willing to provide labor, such as cooking, pet care or elder care, as part of a rent exchange. Ideal candidates for renting a space would have an extra room in their home, provide access to a bathroom and kitchen and possibly share their living space as well, Brown said. Such an arrangement would be a contribution to the community in terms of increasing affordable housing, she said, and would help people immediately. Currently one man and four women are on the waiting list; one of the women has two grown children and a grandson. Additional people are also seeking housing, but they have not been through the complete approval process yet. Soltman said school districts in Tacoma and Seattle are not accepting new students under such circumstances, but one elementary school in the South Kitsap School District is. The district is required to cover students’ transportation there should they choose to transfer, using some of its $140,000 in Title 1 funding, but Soltman said he doesn’t believe any parents will go that route. “Ironically, we have about four kids commuting from South Kitsap to here,� he said.

Parents with children at Chautauqua Elementary School will receive letters this week informing them that their child is attending a “failing� school, a result of the state losing its waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind law. The letter from Chautauqua Principal Jody Metzger, along with a cover letter from Michael Soltman, superintendent of the Vashon Island School District, informs parents that the school didn’t meet the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) benchmarks put forth by No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and is now labeled as failing because less than 100 percent of students passed state tests in reading and math. EDITORIAL Biking at midlife: crazy outfits optional LIFESTYLE Political game is no reflection on Vashon’s thriving schools Vashon’s public schools are strong. The school district is constantly working to address areas that could be improved, and most people would never label island schools as failing. That’s why it’s worrisome that this week a letter will go out to Chautauqua Elementary School parents that does just that. This letter is not unique to Vashon, though. Washington had its waiver from federal No Child Left Behind requirements revoked earlier this year, after lawmakers refused to make student test scores a component of teacher evaluations in this state. As a consequence, most schools in the state are now required to send letters notifying parents that their children’s schools are considered “failing” because less than 100 percent of students passed state tests. Schools will also lose control over some of their federal funds. Those who have followed this issue in the news will know this letter is meaningless and toss it. And those who read Chautauqua Principal Jody Metzger’s explanation of the letter’s background will likely do the same. So while the letter doesn’t mean much, it does symbolize a problem. Schools and children in our state are caught in the middle of a political game. The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act, handed down by the Bush administration in 2001, is badly in need of an overhaul. The flaws in the law have been clear for years, and most states in the country have obtained waivers from its requirements. However, Washington was the first state to lose its waiver after it refused to enact the new teacher evaluation requirement. Now we’re seeing the repercussions. Expecting schools to obtain a 100-percent passage rate for state tests by 2014 was unrealistic when the law was passed, it is unrealistic now, and it doesn’t do much to create better schools. If Washington fails to restore its waiver before Congress takes action, there could be even worse consequences for schools in our state, many of which are actually making progress and thriving. While Congress needs to either fix or do away with this law, our state Legislature should consider its own compromise. A simple act — making test scores a part of teacher evaluations — would save schools from the burden now brought on by NCLB. Incorporating test scores into teacher evaluations is controversial, and most teachers’ unions oppose it. However, the law would also give school districts freedom to decide how and to what extent the scores are used, and there are many other components of the evaluations. A compromise at this point may do more good than harm. However, one of the most significant things the state can do to improve education in the state right now is to fund it better, something it’s making poor progress toward under the McCleary decision. Issues with NCLB only serve to distract lawmakers from the task. Our elected officials at both the state and national levels need to set aside partisan squabbling in order to start putting students first.

For years we’ve been watching our friends, male friends, get into biking. Not to stereotype, but it seems to be a mid-life thing. We’ve enjoyed listening to their bike chatter with a sense of smug detachment. Who knew there was so much to talk about? There’s bike technology, bike gear, bike routes, elevation gains, mileage conquered, horror stories, injuries, epic highs and lows. Truly, before I alienate the amazing bike riding men in my universe, I really love hearing about biking. It’s just not my thing. And, as it were, it wasn’t my husband’s thing either. We’d soak up the stories and boyish excitement of our friends’ stories while shooting each other knowing glances that said, “We’re runners, not bikers. We’ll never go there.” And, I have to tell you, although I will talk about the outfits in a moment, I do not think bike riding is for sissies. On the contrary, listening to my friends talk about their run-ins with rabid drivers, King County rumble strips, raccoons, gravel, potholes and senile old ladies on rainy days (yes, someone got rear-ended at the four-way stop right in front of Sound Food) — all of it has left me completely freaked out about riding a bike. Then there are the hills. Vashon

specializes in hills. This is not some Burke Gilman joyride at sea level. This is home to the Passport 2 Pain, for goodness sakes. What started as a friendly fundraiser for the Vashon Island Rowing Club has become a rite of passage for all of the bike crazies in the Pacific Northwest. Why else would you pay to ride 80 miles and 10,000 vertical feet in a day? Yes, I know, they get their money back, but we all know it’s really uncool to collect the refund. And now we’ve come to the outfits. Dave and I used to have so much fun giggling about the Tour de France-esque outfits that “biking people” seem to have to wear. I mean, I run (okay, jog), but do I dress like Jackie Joyner-Kersee? A huge percentage of bikers wear tight tops emblazoned with logos, shrunken hot pants and weird shoes that make men clip clop around as though in stilettos. I just placed two of those tight racing shirts with the funny pockets into the washing machine. About four months ago, my husband Dave came home and said that his downtown athletic club went out of business. “I’m thinking of commuting to

It’s time to get back to nature My name is Joe, I’m 69 years old, and I’ve lived on the island for 14 years. I care about the Earth and am concerned for its health. It is my body and sustains me personally as well as everyone I see and the entire web of life. I/we need to eat “humble pie.” The news tells of so many examples of the consequences man-made chemicals have had as they have been introduced and then allowed to build up in the environment since the 1950s. They have built up in our bodies, the ground, our rivers and oceans and the air. Evidence shows much harm has been done.
Our highly esteemed scientists from the 50s on have been conducting a gigantic experiment, the results of which are not yet completely known. It’s time to eat “humble pie” and pull back; renew our faith in Mother Nature and learn again as a society how to live within her laws. We’ve been playing with something sacred, ignoring obvious warnings because of vested interests. This is absolute irreverence; it cannot last. Like any life form, nature is extremely resilient. Any correct actions taken will begin to balance the organism and health will gradually return. The time is now!

Two days later he was up at Spider’s Ski & Sports getting outfitted with a loaner; two days after that he was in, full Monty: road bike, convertible pedals, bike shoes, helmet, nubby tires for off-road and fenders for foul weather. The entire family embraced his new lifestyle. Even our Rotary exchange student from Taiwan got in on the action reporting to Dave his arrival time each day. We all ran outside screaming the day he beat his best time by 5 minutes! “You’re not going to wear those crazy outfits, are you?” I snuck the question in as we sipped wine and waited for the barbecue to heat up. “No need,” he said. A couple of weekends ago he went off to ride his first bike event, a 50-mile fundraising ride around Lake Washington. They gave him one of those fancy shirts to wear and another one for completing the race. He loved the experience so much that he’s going to ride the 150-mile route next year. “Did the shirt make a difference?” I just had to ask. “The pockets are really handy,” he confessed. I caught his eye and we both broke out laughing. “You’d look pretty cute in those little bike shorts,” I added. “We’ll see,” he replied. My how the tables have turned.

Money talks when it comes to chemicals Oh my! It looks like the sacred dollar has influenced another well-meant effort to encourage people to do something to help the environment into a position of “can’t prove nothin’, wait and see.” How sad. My beekeeper friend in a farming community in Europe has very healthy bee colonies which have continued to thrive for years. He claims it’s because none of the farmers in his area use chemicals. Scientific studies? Has anyone asked how many of those are funded by the manufacturers of these chemicals? Did you know that in Europe 459 cosmetic ingredients used by the industry are labeled harmful to human health? Does it surprise you that in the USA the FDA has only listed nine chemicals used in cosmetics as harmful? Yes, you read correctly — nine! I tried using the logic of “if I don’t sell it, they’ll buy it somewhere else” on some other objects I believe are harmful, like guns, DDT, fireworks, lead paint. Seriously, that’s logic? Good for Mr. Davila to stand up for his principles. His children or grandchildren
We need to think about the future Our children’s future may be the most obvious reason for stopping the use of toxic chemical pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers on this beautiful island. Let’s be responsible for our actions now to prevent further destruction of our agricultural system; let’s avoid leaving behind a bigger problem for the future generations. We have plenty of evidence now to realize there is a huge negative impact from the use of pest and weed killers and chemical fertilizers. There is also much that is still unknown. We have learned that these seemingly helpful garden potions are doing more harm than good for our food supply and our ecosystem. In the spotlight at this time are the neonicotinoids and their responsibility for the dwindling population of bees. Roundup does not immediately kill the bees, but affects their neurological system, weakens their immune system making them more susceptible to disease, mites and other natural attackers (putting it simply). These are not the only effect these chemicals have. The EPA considers several insecticides in use on food crops today to be

carcinogens. There have also been multiple studies showing links of low-level exposure to pesticides and Parkinson’s disease. This is just the beginning of the list of negative effects. Let’s work toward a toxin-free island and keep these chemicals off Vashon. Please do your research before you choose your insecticides: There are many alternative concoctions and methods of gardening. Together we can be proactive and create positive change for the community, instilling in our young people the importance of taking action to promote a thriving planet. — Lori Lane Kimmel

My wife and I just walked away from a short sale. I couldn’t believe we waited six months and gave the short sale lender everything they wanted and they still wouldn’t close. What is the matter with these people? Don’t they want to sell these places?
A:
I wish I knew the answer to that question. I’ve been involved in several short sales and like many brokers, I hate them. They require far more work and effort than a regular sale and many times they fail. I always tell clients I work with that they can expect it to take at least six months and that they will have no control over the outcome or the transaction. I won’t have any control either. Being a bit of a control freak, that drives me crazy. It would make sense, from a logical point of view that the banks would want to sell these short sales, get some money out of it and move on. Not true. I have come to believe it’s some sort of plot. That sounds paranoid but there is no other explanation for a lender to spend many months sitting on these properties and then refusing to do necessary work (septic failure for instance), or delaying the closing for no reason. For investors paying cash, with no emotional attachment, short sales can be a real bargain. These are buyers who will fix up the place and rent it out or turn around and resell it. But for folks wanting to live in the house and anxious to get settled in, it can be maddening to wait so long. I wish I had an answer. There is truly no sense to it and I’m sorry you’re so frustrated. Before entering into a short sale, ask yourself if you can really wait out four to nine months. Be sure you have your financing ready to go as soon as you get the acceptance from the seller’s lender that they will accept the offer. Also be sure you understand that you will have no control over the process.

Sheepdog trials draw thousands to Misty Isle The Vashon Sheepdog Classic drew about 5,000 people over four days of sheepherding competition, food, music and vendors at Misty Isle Farms. “It was such a great turnout,” said Maggi McClure, the director of the sheepdog trials, noting that there was good weather last Friday through Monday for the event. The Sheepdog Classic began in 2010 after earlier island trials ended in 2002. Since then, it has grown in popularity among both competitors and audiences. Last year the trials drew about 3,000 people over three days of competition, and this year organizers added another day of competition because there was so much interest from sheepdog handlers. Tina Shattuck, the event’s producer, said she was pleased but not surprised at the turnout as this year there was more media coverage beforehand. The event also offered more craft and vendor booths than ever, as well as a spirits garden and live music Saturday night. An alert Washington State Ferries sent about heavy traffic on the Vashon route due to the trials served as “free advertising,” she joked. “People are realizing how much fun it is,” she said. Unlike most sheepherding trials, the Vashon Sheepdog Classic is also a fundraiser for local nonprofits. Each year, thousands of dollars go to island causes that support youth, including the Vashon Park District, the Rockbusters wrestling club, the Bounty Club and the food bank. McClure said on Monday that including a dog sponsorship program put on by Partners in Education, the event likely raised more than $10,000 for nonprofits. —Natalie Martin

Arts briefs: It’s all about music this weekend Roots reggae will rock the Ober park stage Always a crowd pleaser on Vashon, Clinton Fearon & The Boogie Brown Band will return for another performance of the band’s roots reggae music. This time the band will play outside — as the next Concerts in the Park event 7 p.m. Thursday at Ober Park. Like a number of other reggae musicians who came of age in the late 1960s and 70s, Fearon was a Jamaican country boy who, as a teenager, migrated to Kingston to seek his musical fortune. While in Kingston, he sang with a group before moving to Seattle in 1989. Clinton first co-founded The Defenders and then formed his own group, The Boogie Brown Band, in 1993. Fearon is counted among Jamaica’s most talented musicians by peers and professionals in the reggae music industry. A band that’s been called of the Northwest’s most innovative jazz groups, Island Jazz Quintet will bring its improvisational jazz, bossa nova and distinctive arrangements to the Red Bike for a show at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Beginning in 1999, the group held jam sessions at a Vashon cabin tucked into the woods. These jams helped the group develop its unique improvisational style. Before long, the jams turned into regular gigs, both on and off the island. The group recorded two CDs and garnered much critical acclaim. Victory Music Review said of the quintet, “Vashon Island boasts a group worthy of national attention. “It’s not a perfect plan,” said Mark Brownell, a paramedic and the battalion chief for emergency medical services at VIFR, “but it’s hard in emergency medicine to plan for everything because it’s the nature of the job,” Officials have been considering the move since earlier this year, when Brownell and Dr. Sam Warren, VIFR’s medical program director, outlined their concerns about Vashon’s current paramedic program in a formal letter to King County Medic One. They said they believe Vashon’s paramedics could keep up their skills better by responding to a greater number of emergencies. What’s more, Vashon’s response would be stronger if it followed Medic One’s model in which two-paramedic teams stay together. While studies have shown patient outcomes are better when two paramedics work together at all times, Vashon’s paramedics currently split up when one is required to take a patient on the ferry or

must respond to another serious medical emergency, considered an Advanced Life Support (ALS) call. “Not having a partner with them in these moments robs them of the teamwork and extra set of hands that are sometimes required to care for that patient at the highest level,” Warren recently said. At times, he added, Vashon paramedics have been required to handle serious emergencies such as cardiac arrests with help from emergency medical technicians (EMTs) but no other paramedics. Officials at last week’s meeting noted that the idea of absorbing Vashon’s paramedics into the larger, off-island system has been discussed for decades. “Many smart folks before us have looked at this,” said Jim Fogarty, director of Medic One. He said past proposals haven’t been financially viable. This time, however, officials with both King CountyMedic One and VIFR agree that Vashon should give up its $2 million annual contract with Medic One to provide paramedic services on the island and become part of south King County’s program. VIFR will continue to employ
EMTs, who respond to less serious medical emergencies, and firefighters, positions that are funded through $2 million in local levy funds. Lipe, who is now considering how to reorganize the fire department in light of the new system, said he doesn’t expect the transition will affect local taxes and he doesn’t plan to lay off any VIFR employees. He will also begin to look at how the department make the transition, perhaps keeping some Vashon paramedics at the station for a time to work with new ones. “Our eight medics have that island knowledge,” he said. “I think it’s very important to have a partnership for the first year.” Some VIFR staff have expressed concern, however, that the new system could at times compromise Vashon’s response to emergencies. When paramedics take ALS patients to the hospital via ferry, something that happens an average of 2.7 times per week, Medic One will rely on off-island paramedics to provide backup on Vashon. Under the proposal, either a paramedic supervisor or a two-paramedic team in south King County will head to the Fauntleroy ferry as

soon as Vashon paramedics know that they will need to transport a patient. Should offisland paramedics be unavailable, or should ferry problems cause delays, the county may rely on helicopters or the sheriff’s office boat stationed in Des Moines to transport either paramedics or patients. Some have said they worry such a response system could fail when off-island paramedics are busy or problems with ferries or weather come into play. At the meeting, Fogarty and Herbert said they agreed the plan isn’t perfect. However, Medic One will continue to refine it, they said, and may even do trials before the transition. And if needed the county will make changes to the system after it is implemented. Built into the plan are formal reviews at 30, 60 and 90 days. “We have to iron out all the details,” Herbert said. “We’re going to spend all our time now looking at how we will address that second call.” Fogarty noted a couple of other response possibilities not included in the proposal. to off-island paramedics at the dock, or when necessary they could revert to the old system, where one paramedic transfers a patient with an EMT while the other stays on the island. “There are probably some (ideas) that we have not yet explored,” he added. The plan was unanimously approved by the three VIFR board members present at last week’s meeting — Camille Staczek, Rex Stratton and Ron Turner. The special meeting, also a public hearing, was called a week after the proposal was formally introduced and was attended by three of Vashon’s paramedics, several other VIFR staff members and a paramedic from south King County. No members of the public attended. Turner, who at the previous board meeting expressed skepticism about the proposal, introduced the motion to approve it. “It’s your program,” he told Medic One officials at last week’s meeting. “If you feel that you can do it, then make it happen.” Stratton, who also serves on King County’s EMS Advisory Committee, said he was unsure if the board would vote at that meeting, but he felt confident moving
forward with the proposal. He noted that in the south King County system, paramedics typically work fewer hours than they do on Vashon, something also considered a benefit. For some time there has been concern that the long hours Vashon paramedics work when overtime is needed could lead to fatigue and problems on the job. While at VIFR paramedics are regularly on duty for 48 hours straight, in south King County paramedics work a maximum of 24 hours, and 36 hours only when necessary. Under the new plan, Stratton noted, Vashon could also call for extra paramedic help from Medic One in the case of a major island emergency. “I have my concerns about some of the hiccups that we will incur going forward that will have to be solved,” he said, “but in the long run, I think this will be very beneficial for Vashon Island Fire & Rescue.” The proposal must also be approved by King County Executive Dow Constantine and is subject to union agreements, something county officials said they are not concerned about.

“This is really my passion, and I am excited to get started,” Sander said. “I get a little teary learning from my own preschool teacher about how to do it. It feels a bit magical.” The school will serve six children ages 4 and 5, and already four are enrolled in the program, which will meet two mornings a week in the daylight basement of a Gold Beach home that was a preschool years ago, Sander said. Children will learn about math, science and other academics through play, Sander said, with a large arts component as well. Sander’s background includes degrees in elementary and arts education and experience running the Seattle Children’s Museum’s after-school art program, writing an arts curriculum and facilitating art classes for children with disabilities. Now a mother of two children, she graduated from Vashon High School in 1996 and returned to raise her family on the island after being gone for 13 years. “I always knew I wanted to come back,” she said.

She plans to draw from several teaching modalities, she said, and days will include free and structured play, circle time and plenty of time outside. “I am big about the outdoors,” she said. “I think it is super important for kids to learn how to play outside without electronics and tablets.” By next year, Moe said, she would like to be a licensed daycare provider because there are so few on the island. Licensed daycares can legally care for children for full days, unlike preschools. In recent years, she has talked to many families with young children who are new to Vashon and have found the child care options lacking. “A lot have been shocked at the lack of all-day care on the island,” she said. The process to become licensed can be arduous and expensive, Moe noted, but she is working toward licensure as her goal. “People need it. That’s what they want,” she said. “I am hoping there will be a niche out there for that.”

At the north end of the island, Lisa Moe will open Little Islanders for children ages 2 to 5 in the middle of September. Moe is certified as a paraeducator and was close to completing a degree in early education when she stepped away to raise her children. She has considerable experience with young children, having served as a nanny for 15 years. She was also as staff member at Mossy Rock Preschool, which closed several years ago, and more recently at the Klahanie School. Opening
In October or November, the Vashon Island School District will open a free preschool, taught in English and Spanish, for children from low-income families. The program, likely to be called La Escuelita, is funded by the state as an Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program, according to Roxanne Lyons, the district’s curriculum director. She wrote the grant for the program several months ago and called the process “crazy competitive.” The district learned this summer that it

Lyons called preschool a game-changer for students’ educational careers and said she is happy it will now be available to some families who could not otherwise afford it. “We would expect different outcomes grade after grade after grade from kids who had the opportunity to go to preschool,” she said. The program will likely meet at Chautauqua and be full days Tuesday through Friday. In addition to the free schooling and lunch, students will receive free medical and dental care and visual screenings, and families will receive support if a crisis arises. The state has guidelines for who is eligible for the preschool, Lyons said, and she encourages low-income families and parents of foster children to inquire about possible enrollment. The district is looking to hire one teacher for the program and has already hired an assistant teacher, Lilia Longworth, who is from Colombia and worked at Chautauqua last year as an Americorps volunteer. The district and community partners have been conducting outreach this summer for the program, which will likely start out with about 14 children and perhaps grow as high as 24, Lyons said.
Heartstone Preschool Heartstone Preschool has been on Vashon for more than a decade, but last year underwent a large transformation, moving from Vashon Cohousing under the direction of Heather Carrie to Plum Forest Farm with teacher — and farmer — Joanne Jewell at the helm. Under Carrie, the school was based on the Waldorf curriculum, which is natureoriented, Jewell said. That outdoor emphasis is stronger than ever, she said, as the students spend from 9:30 a.m. to noon outside. For Jewell, who served as an assistant at the school several years ago and also teaches at the Vashon Wilderness Program, this emphasis is important. “They learn how they are warm and safe and happy outside,” she said. In the coldest months, the children spend time in the farm’s large greenhouse, gardening in the winter. Other activities include singing, baking and sharing a meal together. The school meets just two days a week. Eleven students ages 3 to 6 are already enrolled for the fall, and there is possibly room for one more older child, Jewell said. Fellow teachers are Mary Lawrence and Linda Moore. Before Carrie moved to California, she approached Jewell about taking over the school. “If they could move it to our farm, that would be ideal for me,” Jewell said she recalled thinking. “I have always felt that our farm was a place that needed to be shared.”
La Petite Etoile Going into its ninth year, French preschool La Petite Etoile will be run by a new teacher this year, Coco Banks. Banks is a native French speaker who is Kenyan and Swiss, and she recently moved to the island with her family from Johannesburg, South Africa. Aristy Gill, who owns the school for children age 2 through kindergarten and has been the primary teacher since opening it, will teach second grade at Chautauqua Elementary School this year. Moving to Vashon was three years in the making for her family, Banks said recently, and was inspired by an article about the island in Sunset magazine. In Johannesburg, Banks taught at a French school, and she also has experience teaching children with autism and special needs. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Before she and her family — a husband who works for the Red Cross and two young children — moved to the United States, Banks said she sent her resume to island preschools. For Gill, who was hoping to get back into the public school system, Banks’ availability and expertise could not have been more timely. “It nearly felt like a miracle to fall into place with Coco,” Gill said. At the school, which meets at Bethel Church three mornings a week, Banks said kids will enjoy play, cooking, getting dirty and a variety of the arts — all in French. She will also bring her experience and international influence to the school, and will have two assistants, Tina Parrish and Mariette Spence. Preschools in France are funded by the government, Gill noted, and all children attend. The curriculum is well developed, and all schools follow it. Banks will bring that knowledge with her, Gill said, as well as a variety of educational approaches from other countries. “It’s going to be a special experience for the Vashon kids who attend,” she said. Twelve students can attend La Petite Etoile; there is currently one opening.
Vashon Maury Cooperative Preschool Earlier this summer, the Vashon Maury Cooperative Preschool moved from the Vashon PlaySpace to the former courtroom at Courthouse Square. At the time, Tami Brockway Joyce, former president of the board, said the space was perfect for the school, with a wall of windows, space for a new playground, which has recently been added, raised garden beds and an area for bike and scooter riding. The preschool, the oldest on the island, has four separate classes for children, depending on their age, ranging from toddlers to age 5. The schedule varies from class to class. A second classroom has been designated just for toddlers, and new this year is a weekly drop-off play time for co-op families.

Dear VIPP, In 2002, Jack and sister, Gigi, were found as young feral cats at Portage, nurtured by VIPP volunteers, and adopted into a loving family on Vashon’s West Side. Jack and Gigi were as close as close Lonesome Jack–Part 1 could be. Over many years filled with constant affection, they grew from skittish ferals into beautiful, confident, and loving creatures of joy. Neither Jack or Gigi had known toys in their wild kittenhood and so played by chasing each other, cat-andmouse, around the house. One toy, however, a stuffed fabric cigar, intrigued them and they both batted it around between them. When Gigi passed away last summer, Jack became lonesome, sad, aloof, and wouldn’t purr. His distraught owners were at a loss to know what to do for him. One month later, the concerned folks at VIPP rode to the rescue…
