West End Thunder Drags this weekend
WET drag racers will attempt to get two full days of racing in this weekend as well as run the Arlen Pearsall Memorial Race which has been rained out twice. In addition to racing there will be a Show and Shine car show. Racing will take place at Forks Municipal Airport on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. Admission for spectators is $10 each day; children 12 and under are free. Registration for the Show and Shine is $15 each day and drag-race registration is $30 daily. WET will host Nostalgia cars at the club’s Everyone’s friend and TECH guy, the late Arlen Pearsall. Sept. 13-14 race weekend.

On Aug. 21 Ethan Gossard and Ryan Anderson both of Forks, will be honored as Sheriff and Chief for a Day, respectively, at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission in Burien. Chief for a Day is about celebrating the lives of children who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening or chronic illness. Each law enforcement agency is providing their “Chief” or “Sheriff” with a hand-tailored uniform and a gift basket containing gifts for each child and their families. This year 34 law enforcement agencies sponsored a child to participate in the event. The two will be “sworn in” and then have lunch with all other attendees and academy recruits, and then participate in outside presentations provided by law enforcement agencies and criminal justice entities including K-9 units, bicycle patrols, SWAT, rifle units, aviation units and much more. This event is donation-funded and is open to the public, children and families are encouraged to attend. After spending only one day of incarceration at Olympic Correction Center, 37-year-old Aaron Richard Brown III saw an opportunity to escape and did so. Brown had arrived at OCC on Wednesday from the state prison in Shelton. He had been incarcerated at Shelton since June 27, when he began a 27-month sentence for drug possession. Brown, of Snohomish County, reportedly slipped away from custody after he was last seen at the Olympic Corrections Center’s dining hall at about 4:35 p.m. Thursday. A team of corrections officers found and arrested Brown, at about 9:30 a.m. Friday in a wooded area about 10 miles north of the corrections center, Department of Corrections spokesman Norah West said. After his capture, Brown was placed in segregation at the corrections center and corrections staff planned to interview him, West said. How he escaped is still under investigation. Forks Visitor Center staff thought Brown might have been their last “tourist” of the day on Thursday, when a person fitting his description stopped in just before closing and was evasive in his manner of speaking. VC staff notified local law enforcement, but it was felt the timing did not fit with Brown’s escape. The state Department of Corrections was the lead agency on the search, with assistance from Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol and the Hoh Tribal Police. Olympic Corrections Center is a minimum security facility and is located about 27 miles south of Forks. It opened in 1968 and can house up to 381 prisoners.

‘Hogs’ like Toleak The fifth annual “Hogathon” got under way last Thursday morning. Hogathon? Never heard of it? Well, it is a group of 1970-something Forks High School classmates that get together each summer and “relive their youth” with a hike in to Toleak. It is sort of like “Survivor,” only they eat a lot better. They all “made it out alive” mid-day on Sunday. Loggers Memorial Book to be updated The Forks Loggers Memorial committee is looking to update the Loggers Memorial Book, originally published in 1994. The original publication has 400 tributes to local timber industry workers who have died. Since its publication, another 300 names have been added to the list and they will be included in the new book. The project also will be an opportunity for individuals to add their tribute to a loved one that worked in the woods industry, with an entry in the book and/or a plaque at the site of the Loggers Memorial statue. THE REAL FORKS Toddlers Assault Tourists
By Christy Rasmussen- Ford A week ago or so, some bicyclists were passing through town. They stopped at Tillicum Park and then were pelted by rocks for no reason at all. This was probably done by a local who was irritated by tourists. Having lived here for most of my life, I understand that tourists can be frustrating. They stop in the middle of the road to take pictures, often go 30-40 miles under the speed limit … in 30-40 mph zones and just seem confused all the time. However, we have a need for toural dollars in Forks. Toural is not a word, but it should be. Toural dollars are more important now than ever with the closing of Interfor. The assaulted tourists will not be visiting Forks again. Neither will any of the 2.5 million other tourists that they warned. Their toural dollars will be spent in other areas. So, that’s good. Clearly this assault was done by a toddler. After all, throwing rocks at people for no logical reason has “toddler mentality” written all over it. No one over the age of 4 would do this. Toddlers though, are notoriously jerkish. If you are a parent, you know that it takes patience, love and lots of vodka to get through the toddler stage. Replace vodka with your personal choice of alcohol if need be. Whiskey, tequila, rum, etc. I’m not judging. I have a toddler so I immediately came to the conclusion that she was the guilty party. Madelyn has a shortage of logic and throws things when mad. I’ve never seen her throw rocks, but I refuse to be the “not my kid” parent. The whole incident probably started after a tourist sat in the swing that Madelyn decided she must have NOW! Add in the fact that Madelyn thinks everything is hers and you can see how things quickly could escalate in a situation like this. Case closed, right? Wrong. My daughter has an alibi. She’s been in bed every night for months. Two credible witnesses back up her story; a baby doll and a stuffed monkey (her BFF). Unfortunately, with Madelyn being cleared as a suspect, we are back to square one. Our focus is still on toddlers in the area though. If you have a child between the ages of 1-3, you might want to question them about their whereabouts for the last couple of nights. Check their hands for dirt marks resembling the small rock patterns at Tillicum Park. Ask their stuffed animals if they have been acting strange lately. Let’s get to the bottom of this and uncover the toddler (or the adult with a toddler mentality) who threw rocks at harmless people just passing through. Lastly, I would like to thank whoever was responsible for preserving the stereotype that all Forks residents are jerks. Considering that 99 percent of us are friendly, we almost became known as a nice community to visit. Thanks for turning things around for us. Letters to the editor policy

Hogathon 2014 Last week Christi RasmussenFord and I both pondered the idea of former Forks kids, now grown-up, returning “home.” Last Thursday such a group of “kids” now all approaching the age of 60 and some having passed it, came home for the fifth annual “Hogathon.” The idea for a hike-reunion to Toleak Point came about in May 2010 at the memorial service for Russell Thomas, Kent Thomas’ father. The group of friends decided they never got to see each other anymore, some still lived in the Forks area, but the majority lived across the state, including Thomas. So the date was set and the hike was named Hogathon 2010. Those participating that first year were Thomas, Kevin Hinchen, Jeff Sullivan, Ron Archer, Mike Brandeberry, Dave Otos, Cliff Otos, Bruce Dunlap, Stephan Morgan and Bill Brager. Also one younger “hog,” Sam Hinchen, joined the first hike. Several of the participants still did some hiking but the majority had not had a pack on for many years. The hike to Toleak was a trip most made many times in the 1970s. Ocean views, sea stacks and just to the south of Toleak Point are beautiful sand beaches. There are excellent opportunities to view bald eagles, seals and bird life is common on the sea stacks. The hike to Toleak in August 1971 was one that would never be forgotten. On Aug. 12, 1971, a California man, his wife and her mother had rented a 17-foot

fishing boat. When they came too close to the shore near Toleak Point the boat had capsized. The man had managed to pull the two women, who had no life preservers and could not swim, onto a nearby rock. He then swam for shore and walked three miles to LaPush to the Quillayute Coast Guard Station. Searchers later found the body of the older woman but the man’s wife remained missing and the search for her was called off the next day, Friday, Aug. 13. A few days later the Otos brothers and friends were being driven to a drop-off point on the Goodman Mainline, by Betty Otos, for their hike to Toleak Point. They were all aware of the boating accident and the older boys in the vehicle began to tease the youngest, Cliff, that they were going to find a dead body on the beach. The camping trip was going normally until they spotted the body. Dave Otos recalled, “After the three of us found the body, I ran down the beach and drug Hinchen, Brager and Farrell Thomas back to help get her above the high tide mark. Hinchen and I jogged out to LaPush and told the Coast Guard. We later found out a guy we talked to at Scott’s Creek didn’t tell us he had a radio so by the time we got to LaPush the Coast Guard already knew.” That experience has stayed
with the hikers all these years and at the first reunion hike in August 2010, the hikers had a small ceremony at the spot they found the woman so many years ago. Since the original Hogathon in 2010, some Hogs have been added: Mark Hithcock, Mike Drovdahl, Bruce Hanify, Ron Paul, and this year some Hogs didn’t make it, but luckily on Sunday they all made it out alive.

community, from page 5 The move is tentatively set to occur during the first two weeks of September, as long as weather, visibility and trail conditions allow. Once all materials and personnel are onsite, moving the building will take about one week to complete. “Visitor, employee and contractor safety is paramount as we prepare for temporary relocation of the chalet,” said Olympic National Park superintendent Sarah Creachbaum. “While we will strive to provide day-use and through-hiker access, the Enchanted Valley will be closed for overnight camping for up to two weeks while the project is ongoing,” she explained. In addition to the camping closure in Enchanted Valley, the Graves Creek Stock Camp will be closed for the duration of the project. Additional details about hiker access to the East Fork Quinault Trail and Enchanted Valley are being developed and will be released when available.
The Enchanted Valley Chalet is located 13 miles from the nearest road, deep within the Olympic Wilderness. The chalet was constructed by Quinault Valley residents in the early 1930s, prior to the establishment of Olympic National Park. The chalet served for several decades as a backcountry lodge and more recently, as a wilderness ranger station and emergency shelter. The chalet was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Photos shared by park visitors in early January showed that the main channel of the East Fork Quinault River had migrated to within 18 inches of the 1930s-era chalet. Last winter’s storms and high flows resulted in the Quinault’s main channel continuing to shift by at least 15 feet. It was a tough day fishing as 44 young anglers and the adults who took them fishing braved thick fog searching for legal salmon. Fishing for clipped coho, 27 youths brought in fish and all participants chose from an array of prizes donated by families and businesses. In the annual Kids Derby, sponsored by the Clallam Bay Sekiu Lions Club, the
first-place winner in the Aug. 16 Derby was George Toponce, age 14, of Arlington, with a coho weighing 9 lb. Chandler Devine, age 14, from Kent, came in second with a 7.5 lb. coho. Winning third place was 9-year-old Evan McGinnis, of Fircrest with a 6 lb. coho. Rounding out the top 10 award winners were Hailey Clemmons (13) Clallam Bay, Christopher Evans (14) Lacey, Sadie Carlyle
(11) Hoquiam, Gabe Barrows (7) Clallam Bay, Jada Clemmons (11) Clallam Bay, Chase Chambers (11) Maple Valley, and Dixsan Martin (5) Maple Valley. Young fishers came from all over western Washington, as near as Clallam Bay, Beaver and Forks and as far as Bellingham, University Place and Maple Valley. The weigh-in, award ceremony and refreshments were held at Van Riper’s Resort. The sun came out as all participants chose their prizes, according to their rank on the fish ladder. Van Riper’s and Olson’s resorts, Weel Road Deli and Forks Outfitters donated $100 each. Sunshine and Rainbows Carnival was indoor fun

The Sunshine and Rainbows annual carnival got off to a wet start, last Tuesday, with no sunshine and only hopes of rainbows as the skies opened up and poured down with a little thunder and lightning thrown in. So the fun moved indoors with all types of games and food for all the youngsters and Smokey the Bear even showed up both days. Smokey was a huge hit, getting lots of hugs and photos with children and adults. In an exclusive interview with the Forks Forum, Smokey was asked what he thought about the rain. Olympic National Forest has announced four dates on which permits for commercial salal collection will be sold. A total of 100 permits will be available on each of the sale days, divided among different harvest areas. Permits will be issued from the Forks, Quinault and Quilcene district offices during business hours on the following dates: Sept. 10, Nov. 5, Jan. 7 and March 18, 2015. On each sale day, 50 permits will be offered from the Quilcene office for harvest areas located within Mason County and the east side of Clallam and Jefferson counties; 25 permits will be offered from the Forks office for the west side of Clallam County; and 25 permits will be offered from the Lake Quinault office for harvest areas within Grays Harbor County and the west side of Jefferson County. A lottery system will be used if the demand for permits exceeds the supply. Each permit will cost $150 and can be used for up to two months. A valid United States picture identification will be required at the time of purchase and those buying the permits must be at least 18 years of age. Cash or checks only will be accepted; credit and debit cards will not be accepted. Only one permit may be purchased per person per sale day.
