Mini burglar hits Neil’s Clover Patch By JUSTIN BURNETT South Whidbey Record

The winemakers emerged as the 2014 Soup Box Derby champions over the course of seven heats that lasted two hours. Their first race may have been the closest. Neil’s Clover Patch Cafe became the latest victim in a string of commercial burglaries on South Whidbey this past weekend. The Bayview eatery was broken into sometime late Saturday evening or early Sunday morning. Access was gained through a tiny window and the thieves got away with $200 to $300 in loose change. But, holding to their namesake, luck was with the Clover Patch and a suspect in the burglary was taken into custody Sunday morning. Christopher Nielsen, 29, was found passed out in a stolen vehicle in Coupeville, and a search of the car on Monday revealed money bags with the restaurant’s name on the side. Nielsen is currently being held in the Island County Jail on unrelated charges, but the arresting officer, Lt. Mike Hawley with the Island County Sheriff’s Office, said more are likely to follow. Clover Patch owner Neil Colburn said the entire affair was a bit strange. The thief got in by squeezing through an 18-inch-wide, metalscreened window in a food pantry. It was located behind an ice machine, which the burglar pushed aside to gain access to the rest of the building. Colburn marveled how someone could have wiggled through the tiny space. Like the fable of Cinderella’s shoe, he said only the smallest of thieves could have fit. “He’s gotta weigh only 70 pounds,” Colburn said.

Whidbey Island Winery barrels into Soup Box title By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record Looking like Racer’s Row, the US Bank parking lot in Langley was filled with 17 race cars and dozens of admiring spectators Sunday morning. Instead of sleek Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari or BMW F-1 cars, the Village by the Sea was overrun with soup box derby cars seemingly made of junk and spare parts—a long held tradition in the Soup Box Derby. The name is a play on words
in honor of a now-long closed restaurant on First Street near the race’s finish line. People lined the sidewalk and curbs on either side from the Inn at Langley to beyond the finish line at the intersection of Anthes Avenue. “Great turnout with racers, spectators,” said Tucker Stevens, a member of the Langley Community Club that organizes the annual race. “The famous Rolling Thunder with Colin Campbell and Bob Bowling made its first entry. Unfortunately it was too heavy, but it looked great.” After a rainout last year when the race was scheduled for mid-September, organizers set it for mid-August hoping for better weather. They

Hannold secures second spot in commissioner race Treasurer’s race to start recount Monday By JANIS REID South Whidbey Record Retired Navy chief Rick Hannold secured the second slot for the commissioner District 3 election, and pulled far enough ahead to avoid a recount. Primary election results were certified Tuesday morning. Democrat Karla Jacks took the majority of the votes in the commissioner race with 3,028 votes. Hannold, a Republican, took the second general election spot with 946 votes, with interim Commissioner Aubrey Vaughan a close third with 896 votes — a 50-vote margin.

Hannold said his strategy was mainly “door knocking� and meeting people in person. Moving forward, he plans to step up his campaign with advertising and finding more volunteers to help out. “I’m looking forward to the challenges of the general election,� Hannold said. A total of 233 ballots were
rejected by the elections office for the primary due to late postage dates and other issues. Commissioner Jill Johnson commented at Monday’s regular commission meeting that with races this close, every vote needs to count. Vaughan, who was appointed to the District 3
position in May, said it was unfortunate that so many votes had to be rejected. “Yes, I’m disappointed that those votes weren’t counted,� Vaughan said Tuesday. “But would they have swung the election one way or the other? We’ll never know.� Only voters within District 3 cast ballots for the commissioner primary, but the
winner will be decided in the general election through a county-wide vote. The election for county treasurer is an even closer race. Democratic incumbent Ana Maria NuĂąez took the majority of votes with 7,847, but the other two candidates were still within 11 votes of each other at certification.
Nudist sheriff hopeful won’t be on November ballot By JANIS REID South Whidbey Record Nudist Democrat David Olinger, who ran as a writein candidate for Island County Sheriff, won’t be going on to the general election. T h e Nor th Whidbey resident gained only 64 votes in Olinger the prim a r y election. In order to be placed on the ballot as a write-in, a candidate must get at least 1 percent of the votes cast in that race. Olinger would have had to get at least 133 votes to
move on to the November election. Self-described as “pretty ferocious,� Olinger said he ran because he was unhappy at how many of the county’s elected officials were running unopposed. He announced his choice to run for sheriff but added that he’d take any job people wrote him in for. Olinger also took four votes for prosecutor, two votes for assessor, one vote for auditor and coroner, and three votes for state representative District 10 position 1. But while his dreams to become sheriff have been dashed, his hope of becoming a punchline on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart might actually come true. Since the story ran in

In the County Auditor’s race incumbent Sheilah Crider took 9,287 with challenger Rebecca Wagner taking 6,955 votes. LANGLEY Former deputy joins police force Michael Beech was officially sworn in as a Langley police officer Monday night. After two decades with the Island County Sheriff’s Office, four years serving in the United States Marine Corps and a handful of months as a reserve officer in Langley, he will wear the black-and-blue of the Langley Police Department. His hiring restores the city’s police force to three officers and a chief, the first time in months the department’s been a it’s full staffing level. “Mike, we’re deeply honored to have a man of your expertise on the force,” said Mayor Fred McCarthy, adding that the city now has the right personnel in its police department. Langley is preparing for a court fight against a former officer who was let go earlier this year. Mitch Hardin alleged that he was fired for not complying with Chief Dave Marks on union negotiations. McCarthy defended the city’s decision in a prepared statement last month, saying that new officers are given a oneyear probationary period to make sure they are a good fit, and that Hardin was not.

A celebration of life for Paul Schell will be held in Seattle this October. The event begins at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Bell Harbor International Conference Center, 2211 Alaskan Way, in Seattle. The date was set for Schell’s birthday. He would have been 77. Schell, a longtime Langley resident and former Seattle mayor, died July 27 from complications associated with heart surgery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either

Vocal group celebrates 10 years By KATE DANIEL South Whidbey Record SlapHappy isn’t a typical a cappella group. The band, which is composed of Matt Bell, Mark Arand, Gabe Harshman and Cameron Gray, has been performing their signature act, which Bell describes as “30 percent funny, 30 percent cool and 30 percent pretty,” for 10 years. The comedy a cappella group formed during backstage preparations for “The Music Man,” a show at the Porter Building in which the then-teens were all performing. Bell recalled that the original foursome, which then included Jared Moore, “randomly” began singing “Barbara Ann” by The Beach Boys when fellow actor Orson Ossman casually suggested the boys should form a band. By the time Ossman returned from getting his makeup done, Bell recalled, SlapHappy had been created. “It just took off from there,” said Bell. According to Bell, the band name has become a sort of Whidbey-famous brand, performing at venues from Choochokam to a Langley pub and Whidbey Children’s Theater. Although there have been a couple of changes to the group’s repertoire, a goal to appeal to all age groups has remained largely consistent. As the years have passed, the guys have each become more knowledgeable and artistically versatile, Bell explained, saying that now the group is capable of performing “pretty much anything” and has a repertoire

Bell explained that most of their songs are covers from groups such as Weird Al, Lonely Island and Da Vinci’s Notebook, although they occasionally toss some originals—and some Taylor Swift—into the mix. “We don’t just sing barbershop, or do what you’d expect. There is a joke between every song; we do a lot of skits…most of our songs are funny. We have a pretty firm rule that at least one-third of our music has to be a joke or funny song for us to do a concert.” Bell said that the set for their 10-year anniversary will include a lot of old favorites like “Zombie Jamboree” as well as some new tunes including one from Lonely Island and what
Bell described as a “surprise song involving instruments about ‘Game of Thrones.’ ” “It’s pretty crazy. We’ve made it an annual thing for the last six years to say ‘This is probably the last concert we’re ever going to do,’ ” Bell said. “We’d find a way to put together a show for the summer before everybody left the island again and we’d… get all emotional about it, and somehow there was always another show. At this point we just assume there will be more SlapHappy. It’s really cool that the community has supported us.” The group will be celebrating their decade-long run with an anniversary performance at 8 p.m. Aug. 21 at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts. Tickets are $15.

Port finance director Angi Mozer tapped as interim executive Angi Mozer, Port of South Whidbey’s finance director, has a new baby and a new job. Fresh off maternity leave, Mozer was appointed as the interim executive director at a port commissioners meeting Aug. 12 — one day after she returned to work. “It was pretty straightforward,” said Commissioner Ed Halloran. “Angi was
sort of the heir apparent without too much discussion.” While on leave, Halloran said Mozer was still on top of the port district’s affairs, regularly checking financial reports. The position is a first for the Port of South Whidbey. Previously, it had a port manager and a finance director as its top administrative jobs. Those were essentially combined into an executive director, which Halloran said is more in line with Washington’s other port districts. The job will eventually be up for a search, but a date has not been set. Acting director Dane Anderson’s contract expires at the end of August.

Newspaper stories make a difference By KEVEN GRAVES
Reporters and editors often half-jokingly remark amongst themselves that they don’t become journalists for the money. That’s drummed into journalism students starting in college. A professor told a group of us first-year Journalism 101 students to consider another major if money was the driving factor in our career choice. So, what motivates a reporter? I can only speak for myself and try to represent what I know about the many dedicated reporters I’ve worked with over the years. The common element seems to be that every reporter and editor wants to make a difference. Weekly reporters produce mountains of news copy over their careers, and every once in a while a particular article resonates with readers. For me, the quirky and the odd news items seemed to get a lot of comments. One article that grew legs quickly and resulted in changes for the better was an article I wrote many years ago about poor television cable service in Coupeville. It wasn’t a world-changing subject, but it brought a response greater than I’d seen up to that point. People even attended town council meetings to address the subject. More recently, the South Whidbey Record has published articles about the ongoing burglaries on the South End. Stories talked about who was burglarized, how the thieves got in and apparently got people thinking about how to safeguard their businesses. This past weekend, either late Saturday or early Sunday morning, Neil’s Clover Patch Cafe was broken into, but the culprits didn’t get away with more than some change. On his business’ Facebook page, owner Neil Colburn said articles in The Record and alerts from the Island County Sheriff’s office about the burglaries prompted him to remove cash from the building each night. “That probably saved us two or three grand,” Colburn said. New conductor takes lead at Saratoga Orchestra By KATE DANIEL South Whidbey Record After a two-year search, the Saratoga Orchestra has chosen Anna Edwards as its new conductor and music director for the 2014-2015 season entitled “Soaring to New Adventures.” The orchestra advisory committee, board of directors and community took part in the selection process. The concert season will begin in early November. Edwards has been a part of the Seattle music community for 20 years and is the founder and music director of the Seattle Collaborative Orchestra. In addition, Edwards is a member of the Auburn Symphony and works as a freelance violinist, playing with groups such as the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Northwest Chamber Orchestra and Northwest Sinfonietta. During Saratoga Orchestra’s upcoming season, concerts will be held in Oak Harbor, Langley and Coupeville beginning with “Curtains Up” at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at South Whidbey High School. The performance will include Rossini’s Overture to “Barber of Seville,” Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto #1, Op. 25 featuring pianist Mark Salman as soloist—and Beethoven’s Symphony #7, Op. 92. At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, a chamber music concert entitled

The season continues in March with “Fairy Tales and Ancient Legends,” an “epic undertaking” including the presentation of Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” and solos by Karl Olsen, baritone, Lisa Berritella, soprano and Voltaire Verzosa, countertenor. The program will feature a choir of Whidbey community members and students and will be held at 7 p.m. March 21 at Oak Harbor High School and repeated at 2:30 p.m. March 22 at South Whidbey High School. One of three applicants for recreational marijuana-based businesses on Whidbey Island is withdrawing its application. Ester Bandelin Rodriguez said the planned Coupevillebased Salish Sea Industries is withdrawing its land-use permit request due to federal regulation conflicts. Rodriguez, along with Judy and Josh Harvey and Mark Rodriguez proposed to build a 3,833-square-foot barn for the production and processing of marijuana on Edgefield Lane off Engle Road. The problem, said Rodriguez, was that part of the property includes a conservation easement with the Whidbey Camano Land Trust. “As there is a federal component to this easement which provides little to no flexibility at present time, we simply do not wish to enter into a protracted legal battle with the federal government at taxpayer expense,” Rodriguez and her counterparts said in a prepared statement. Pat Powell, executive director for the Land Trust, said she notified Salish Sea Industries that the terms of the conservation easement would not allow them to do something that is in violation of federal law. Powell said part of the $75,000 easement was paid for with federal funds. “The Land Trust has no position on this issue,” she said. “We just have to make sure property owners comply with easement regulations.” The proposed location for Salish Sea Industries lies within Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reser ve. County officials initially proposed banning pot businesses from the area, but that changed after Coupeville farmers said they were against restrictions that would treat Central Whidbey differently from other areas of the county. While the permit was still in process, the public was invited

One resident wrote against the proposed business, but Rodriguez said he was misinformed and thought all property within in the reserve is federally owned when in fact a large portion is privately owned. While working on the permit application, Salish Sea Industries worked with Island County, the Land Trust and Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve. “To our knowledge we were in good standing with all of them,” Rodriguez said. “The only conflict we encountered was the easement.” While not all of the proposed location is protected by a conservation easement, Salish Sea Industries cannot operate on the other portion of the property because the bordering property is zoned rural residential. Per Island County code, marijuana-based businesses cannot operate in rural-residential areas. Another permit was application still in processing is submitted by Maureen Cooke, who filed applications for a site plan and a building permit for a 760-square-foot marijuana retail store in Bayview next to the El Corral Mexican restaurant. She opened the shop for a short time in early August — though she didn’t have any product — but it turned out she didn’t have the necessary approvals from the county. Cooke did not return calls for comment regarding this story. A third Whidbey Island applicant submitted this month, Bud Brothers, a proposed producer/ processor business on Goldie Road in Oak Harbor. “We’ve had several pre-application conferences and conversations with potential applicants that have yet to file for county approval, but at present, we have only three applications,” said David Wechner, Island County Planning Director. He confirmed Salish Sea Industries withdrew its application Tuesday morning via email. A third application is also pending for a business proposed on Camano Island.

Triathlon newcomer makes a Long-time Whidbey racer Drew Magill wins

The winner at the Whidbey Triathlon is a regular at the South End’s swim-bike-run race now in its 18th year. Drew Magill, who won three years in a row between 2008-2010, returned to the top of the Whidbey Triathlon crop Saturday. He finished in 1:28:16 during the overcast-turned-sunny race day Aug. 16. It was the second-place finisher, however, who turned heads. Tyler Clark of Seattle burst ahead of the first wave — generally projected to be the top finishers — during the half-mile swim at Goss Lake. By the first buoy, he was several meters ahead of the next racer. Once he reached shore for the transition to the bike segment, the fourth and final wave of racers was just getting ready to swim. After the swim, the seasoned triathlete with about 20 races from short sprints
to Ironman events to his name, never looked back. Literally, he said he never turned his head to check on the competition. “I fully expected to be caught on the bike, then when I got on the bike I fully expected to be caught on the run,” said Clark, a former collegiate swimmer for the Rutgers University men’s team who now works for blueseventy, an aquatic and triathlon apparel company. Clark, 30, had only signed up four days before the 23.8mile race. Swimming strokes were as varied as racers’ outfits and times. Clark utilized a front crawl, but several other people did what they could manage, from a frantic trudgen to the well-paced breaststroke and even a handful of recreational backstrokes. Weather was ideal for many athletes, with an overcast start that kept the air a bit chilly, then warm, sunny skies by the end. “Cool in the morning, sunny in the afternoon after most of the people were done,” said Carrie Monforte, the race director

list and closing registration a week before the race. Racers came from across the country and state for the triathlon with a distance in between sprint and Olympic lengths. For Mickey Cleveland, a former Texan and recent Kent resident, his second Whidbey Triathlon was just the most recent triathlon in a long list of races. But for all the events he’s competed in, Cleveland said he hadn’t gone full-tilt with the culture and was not using the triathlon suits that double as wetsuits, bike outfits and running apparel. “My 180th-place finish wasn’t because of my outfit,” he said, referring to his finish at the 2013 Whidbey race.

From soaring to fluttering, flight helps ID birds
WHIDBEY BIRDING Frances Wood While having coffee with a friend recently, she suggested, “Why don’t you write about bird flight. I’d like to know what those birds are that make a wave pattern as they fly through my garden.” It got me thinking how much of bird identification can depend on flight behavior. Is the flight fast and direct? Slow and meandering? Is the bird hovering or soaring? Paying attention to flight behavior can be a joy in itself and is one more way to deepen our connections to the natural world. As we sat, I noticed a black bird out of the corner of my eye. I didn’t

The basics of flight behavior are pretty obvious. Big birds like the great blue heron have large wings and a slow, deliberate wing beat. You could easily count the beats.
At the other end of the size scale, hummingbirds have a fast, rapid wing beat. It’s impossible to count those beats, sometimes as fast as 80 beats per second. But flight behavior is not just a matter of wing size versus body weight. Birds fly to locate and capture food, to escape from danger and
to migrate. Some take short flights from tree to tree or tree to ground. Others take miles-long flights. Swallows consume their prey on the wing, flitting and gliding through the air. Once they spot an insect, the birds dart to snatch it into their mouths. Gulls soar over large stretches of
water, holding their wings still and catching wind currents. Hawks do the same over land. They are keeping an eye out for their prey down on the water or land. When they locate something tempting, they descend quickly. The champions of all soaring birds are the albatrosses. They stay aloft for days at a time and even sleep on the wing. Soaring preserves their energy for these long flights. Another flight characteristic to watch for is hovering. You’ve probably observed a hummingbird hover near your feeder or as it sips nectar from a flower. They have an amazing ability to pause mid-air without moving even a fraction of an inch. This is accomplished by beating their wings in a more or less figureeight pattern with the “eight” lying on its side. If you’ve seen a small hawk hovering over open fields, it’s likely a kestrel. Hanging in one position, by flying into the wind at a speed equal to the wind, allows the raptor to scan the ground without alerting its prey. Kingfishers are also excellent at this skill. seeks the roots of family trees
By KATE DANIEL South Whidbey Record The a convicted murderer is in the family isn’t exactly what Langley residents Graham and Jackie Johnson hoped to discover when they began researching a bit of family history. Yet, that’s just what they found. Jackie’s great-great grandmother, Elizabeth Van Valkenburgh, is “very famous” in Fulton County, New York, for being the only woman hanged for murder in the state. Adding to her notoriety was that the 34-year-old mother of two was executed in 1846 while sitting in her rocking chair, due to being obese and having suffered a broken leg from falling through a barn floor while hiding from authorities. The Johnsons had been on a quest to find Jackie Johnson’s great-grandfather’s parents, to “fill the gap in her family history,” according to Graham Johnson. Although the Johnson’s son had uncovered some family history books, little was noted about the children’s mother and father — the record said simply that they were orphaned at a young age. It failed to note that their mother had confessed that she had poisoned their father and her previous husband with arsenic and killed them. The Johnsons finally uncovered the unique bit of family history on a trip to New England. “The look on her face was worth the trip,” Graham Johnson said with a laugh, recalling the moment his late wife read the criminal record of her great-greatgrandmother. “She loved to tell the story,” he said. Mary Sue Kriefall, president of the Genealogical Society of South Whidbey Island , said that society members like Graham Johnson often uncover genealogical facts they never would have surmised from handed-down family trees,

The society’s objective, according to Kriefall, is education and exploration of genealogy both within the United States and internationally. Its programs, which are free and open to the public, incorporate discussions and talks from genealogy experts. When Kriefall began researching her own heritage, her mother was still alive to advise Kriefall as she went about constructing her own family tree. After listing her cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents, Kriefall said she thought she was done. However, she said, she realized she was far from finished. There were facts to check and details to uncover. She explained that, for her, finding basic names and dates was not the most
interesting part. It was discovering the culture and lifestyles of her ancestors that prompted Kriefall to keep looking. “It becomes fascinating to put yourself in your ancestor’s shoes,” she said, explaining that for her allGerman ancestors, it must have been “quite a [culture] shock” coming from Germany to America as early as the 1600s. Not all information is available online, explained Kriefall, citing the fact that prior to the Internet era, facts and family trees were copied down in books or duplicated from one family member’s rendition of the family tree to another. “You can’t just take information from someone else’s family tree,” Kriefall explained. “You pretty much have to check it out yourself if you don’t want to go down the wrong branch. … Genealogy is a lot of detec-
tive work,” said Kriefall. “It’s what makes it work but it’s also what makes it fun because when you get a little kernel that supports your theory or sends you down the right path then you feel like you’ve really accomplished something.” Due in part to widespread illiteracy, official records can also contain errors, something Kriefall came to recognize when she obtained her grandmother Christina’s birth certificate which listed Christina as Christian, a male child. Although Kriefall and her mother were able to have the record amended after verifying Christina’s information with a marriage certificate and her mother’s recollection, Kriefall said this type of mistake is common. Death certificates can be particularly inaccurate, she added. “Many official records contain errors so using a single source is not enough,”

In addition to historical facts, family secrets and cultural knowledge, Kriefall said the exploration of ancestry can lend a better understanding of what makes individuals who they are in terms of personality and features. “I think there is a lot of nature that gets passed down, personally,” she said. “And I think that’s why America is so can-do. Our ancestors had to be can-do in order to get over here.” According to Graham Johnson, the help he received from the society members allowed him to discover his own family heritage in Sweden and lent him a better understanding of himself in the process. “To find out who you are today you really need to reflect back on your ancestors, those who preceded you,” he said, explaining that he can now trace his values and traits back to the farm of his ancestors in Sweden, and the church at which they
were married nearly 400 years ago. Meetings of the Genealogical Society of South Whidbey Island take place at 1 p.m. on the second Monday of the month from September through June at the Trinity Lutheran Church Community Building. The society is composed of approximately 100 computer literate members from Clinton to Oak Harbor whose levels of expertise range from beginning to advanced. Membership is $15 a year which pays for the society’s overhead costs and affords privileges such as subscription to the society newsletter and access to one of the interest groups: Legacy Software, Reunion Software, German Research, New York and New England Research and a Writers Group. nosed ahead. When Peter Lawlor, 93, made his way into the staging area at US Bank, it was as if Enzo Ferrari or Jeff Gordon were in Langley. Comments heard as he took a hero’s stroll—walking cane in his right hand—into the parking lot: “Hey! Peter’s here,” and “Oh, Peter!” The staple at the race was adorned in a gold sequined vest, a black button-up shirt with a collar worthy of Elvis Presley, and a helmet covered in flowers. Lawlor became the subject in many a photo with spectators and friends clamoring for a chance at a selfie with the living legend and his car, “Over-Ripe Old Banana.” Near the end of the event, grudge matches took over the two-lane course. Lawlor was challenged by Gary Piper in a neck-and-neck race between a car shaped like a
banana and one shaped like an outhouse. “It was very close, but apparently Peter Lawlor won by at least six feet. My, my, my, he’s 93 years old,” said Stevens, remarking on Lawlor’s age. As the racers pulled their cars up the First Street hill to the Park Street start line, the crowd cheered them on— none more so than when Lawlor made his way up the hill, cane in hand; the other hand balled into a fist, triumphantly pumping into the air. Hay bales lined the street to protect spectators, homes and stores from any wayward derby cars, though they were never needed Sunday. “No bumps, no lumps, no scratches, no bruises,” Stevens said. “Pure joy.” The event is a fundraiser for the Langley Community Club, which uses the money to pay for various civic projects around the city. Stevens and club President John Lawson noted that the Island Shakespeare Festival and the Whidbey Island Center for

fairly shallow water watching for fish. When they spot dinner, they plunge down to capture their prey in their beaks. Birds also fly to get from point A to point B. They might be moving from roosting areas to feeding areas or migrating. Loons, cormorants and diving ducks fly low over the water with fast, strong wing beats, looking for the entire world like they will fall out of the sky at any moment, yet stay airborne for miles. Whidbey’s favorite seabird, the pigeon guillemot, searches for
food at the bottom of the bay and its wings are designed more for “flying” underwater than for abovewater flight. Sparrows, quail and other ground feeders scurry to cover in shrubs or other thick vegetation rather than fly off. When they do fly, it’s a quick burst of energy. Woodpeckers display a strong, undulating flight with short glides in between their wing beats. Bushtits definitely romp. They move from branch to branch in a helter-skelter manner, thoroughly exploring one tree and then one-byone they cavort off to another tree. Chickadees caper through branches searching for insect larva. Finches frolic as they fly with a

wave-like flight pattern. Flight patterns can also help with some difficult to distinguish species. For example, crows and ravens fly very differently. Crows have a smooth, “rowing” action and never soar; ravens often soar and engage is aerial acrobatics. Sometimes the only way to tell a Cooper’s hawk from a sharpshinned hawk is by the flight. Watch for the sharp-shinned’s quick little shimmy as it careens through the woods. The Cooper’s flight pattern is more stiff and choppy. I hope this quick introduction to flight behavior has helped. Now, you won’t have to wait until a bird lands to begin your identification

While that fact alone might exonerate Nielsen, police apparently told the Colburns that he may have had an accomplice. “They said he had a small friend,” said Colburn, this time bursting out laughing. “This whole thing is getting pretty bizarre,” he said. Hawley did not mention another person when interviewed on Monday, and it could not be clarified by press time Tuesday whether a second suspect was arrested or is believed to have been involved in the burglary. Also, an officer based out of the sheriff’s office’s south precinct in Freeland is working on a separate case concerning Nielsen, to which the unrelated charges are connected. Messages left at the office were not returned by press time, but Island County Prosecutor Greg Banks confirmed Nielsen was facing misdemeanor

charges of criminal trespass from November, and driving on a suspended license from March. Despite the humor involved in the burglary, Colburn said he was relieved a suspect is in custody and that the stolen money would be returned. “It’s a couple hundred bucks,” Colburn said. “I’ll get that back so that makes me feel good.” He added that while the circumstances make the event a bit humorous, the loss might have been much greater if not for a recent policy shift to never leave cash in the restaurant overnight. It was enacted only recently and as a precautionary measure following the rash of burglaries at prominent South Whidbey businesses and organizations this year. Some of those hit include: South Whidbey Senior Center in Bayview, January; Eagles Aerie in Freeland, February and July; Freeland Cafe in Freeland, July; and Cozy’s Roadhouse in Clinton, July.

Marks said the burglars failed to gain entry into any of the locations except for a work truck, and he warned people to lock their cars, homes and business doors at night. “If you’ve got a vehicle, lock the doors and set the alarm,” he said. Several of the July breakins had phone lines snipped, which investigators say may have been attempts to circumvent alarm systems. Colburn said news stories about the break-ins and alerts from the Island County Sheriff’s Office indicated a pattern and prompted him to take the extra step to safeguard his business. It proved a wise move. “That probably saved us two or three grand,” Colburn said. The burglar did ransack a back office, pulling out several desk drawers and strewing their contents across
the floor. But, like the entire affair, Colburn took the mess in stride. “This one hadn’t been cleaned out in 30 years so it was just as well,” said a smiling Colburn, while pointing to one of the desk drawers. Nielsen is a South Whidbey resident, and a suspect in burglaries on the north and south ends. Island County Sheriff Mark Brown said this was the first major burglary that he was aware of since the string that occurred in July, and that it remains unclear whether they are linked. “We don’t know,” Brown said. “They could be connected, they might not. We’re looking into it.” Those burglaries were particularly “disturbing” due to the tactics used — cutting phone lines — and they remain under investigation. he said.
