Two bears sighted in a week By Sarah Wehmann Staff Writer

In the last week, two bears have been spotted both in Sumner and Bonney Lake. It appears the bears have been on the hunt for food, looking for any blackberries, plums or other ripening fruit in the area. On Monday, August 4, shortly before 9 a.m., the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife

received a call from state patrol reporting a bear sighting in Sumner. Once Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife officers arrived on seen, they saw the bear on 60th Ave. East. The officers moved the bear east, toward town, to a vacant lot on Graham Ave. The vacant lot is filled with blackberry bushes and other brush and according to the

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Sumner Police Department brought a backhoe to help clear the property. The bear went into an uncleared area of the lot and officers sent in a specially trained Karelian bear dog to find the bear. The dog located the bear and alerted officers of its whereabouts.

The East Pierce Fire and Rescue Maintenance and Operation Levy appears to have failed to muster enough support to pass according to results from the Aug. 5 primary election. As Monday the result were 55.88 percent yes and 44.12 no. State law required a supermajority of 60 percent. “The levy would have allowed the fire district to maintain the current level of fire, rescue and emergency medical services,” said East Pierce Fire Chief Jerry E. Thorson. “It also would have allowed the district to increase staffing for improved firefighter safety and efficiency.” East Pierce Fire and Rescue is funded at a rate of $1.50 per thousand dollars of assessed property value for fire services and 50 cents per thousand dollars of assessed value for emergency medical services. For a $250,000 home, a homeowner would expect to pay around $500 per year. The levy passed in 2012 added an additional cost of 38 cents per thousand dollars in assessed property value in 2013, and 43 cents per thousand dollars in assessed property value in 2014. For a $250,000 home, homeowners paid an average of $600 per year for in 2013 and 2014, a $100 increase from 2011. The proposed four-year levy would have renewed the 2012 levy and would have increased the additional cost to an average of 50 cents per thousand dollars of assessed property value. For a $250,000 home, homeowners could have expected to pay an average of $625 per year for the four years the levy would have been in effect, a $25 increase from the previous two years. The proposed four-year levy was estimated to raise an average of 4.8 million per year between 2015 and 2018. “I do believe that the public appreciates and values our services,” Thorson said. “They just couldn’t approve an increase in their taxes at this time.” Thorson said that the Board of Fire Commissioners and command staff are now reviewing funding options for next year.

Bonney Lake and cities across the state celebrated National Night Out Aug, 5. The Bonney Lake Police Department and East Pierce Fire and Rescue organized the event and provided vehicles like motorcycles, squad cars and a fire truck for children to climb in and explore. An important reason for putting on the event was to get the community together in one place to get to know each other, according to Bonney Lake Police Officer Kristine Yanez, who helped organize the event. Another reason, she said, was to give the community a chance to talk to the local police department and city officials in a low-key setting to increase communication between the community and the police department. “The community is our

OBITUARY Mary Hollenbeck Mary Louise (Brown) Hollenbeck, 84, died July 25, 2014, after declining slowly from dementia. She had been a resident of Clark Place in Moscow, Idaho, for six years. She was born April 25, 1930, in Brush, Colo., to Willis Clark and Bernice Louise Brown. health, she moved to Troy, Idaho, to be close to family She is survived by daughters Diana (Guy) Buzga of Troy, Idaho, and Laura (David) Peacock of Buna, Texas; sons James (Valerie) Hollenbeck of Winter Garden, Fla., and Joseph Hollenbeck of Bonney Lake; sisters Dorothy (Howard) Botts of Black Diamond and Betty Hoffman of Missoula, Mont.; 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and a grandson. A celebration of her life is planned for 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at the Black Diamond Community Center, with a luncheon to follow.

The Aug. 5 primary narrowed the field of prospective political candidates in the 31st District and set up the high-noon showdown in the race for the district’s seat in the Senate. The intraparty primary clash between Sen. Pam Roach, R-Auburn, and Rep. Cathy Dahlquist, R-Enumclaw, drew plenty of smoke and fire, and both will be on the November ballot. As of Monday, Roach maintained a narrow 288 vote lead over Dahlquist, according to the Secretary of State’s website. Roach had a 156 vote margin on election night. In the weeks leading up the primary, Roach faced a series of newspaper reports from The Courier-Herald, Tacoma News Tribune and Seattle Times concerning some of her Senate expense reports payments over the past six years. Roach, who is seeking a seventh term in the Senate, had to pay back about $5,000

to the Senate for mileage that was not allowed, two cell phones and her post office mailbox that received legislative and campaign mail, which is not allowed by state law. The senator repeatedly said the accuracy of her expense reports were not her responsibility, but the responsibility of the Senate administration. During the weeks leading up to the primary and after the expense reports stories broke in the media, Roach sent an email to The CourierHerald stating she delivered a letter to the Public Disclosure Commission alleging Dahlquist violated campaign finance rules. The accuracy or validity of this allegation has not been confirmed. Roach receive 9,077 votes, 40 percent, and Dahlquist had 8,789 votes, good for 39 percent. Lynda Messner, from Bonney Lake, who ran as a Democrat, received 4,551, 20 percent. Messner has been eliminated and Roach and Dahlquist now advance to the general election. In King County, Dahlquist

received 3,254 votes and 42 percent to Roach’s 3,064 votes and 40 percent. Roach’s strength was in Pierce County where she polled 6,013 votes and 41 percent to Dahlquist’s 5,535 votes and 38 percent. Where Messner’s votes end up may determine the next senator in the 31st District. Dahlquist and Rep. Chris Hurst, D-Greenwater, have maintained Messner was a “fake” Democrat who ran only to siphon votes away from Dahlquist, thus helping Roach. State House Position No. 1 In State House Position No. 1, Republican Drew Stokesbary and Democrat Mike Sando will line up against each other in the general election. Stokesbary took 11,413 votes and 52 percent to 31 percent for Sando with 6,929 votes. Democrat Jonathon Dunn is out after pulling 3,658 votes and 17 percent. Driving With a License Suspended: Officers on a routine patrol checked the records of a vehicle driving near 81st and Myers Road. They were notified that the registered driver was driving with a license suspended. The vehicle made a quick turn into a private driveway before backing up with two additional passengers. Officers continued to watch the vehicle and observed the passenger moving around and throw something out of the window. Once officers approached the vehicle, they saw that both passengers were not wearing seat belts and a large butcher knife was laying on the floor in the front. After a records check, the female passenger showed in Auburn, Wash., and graduated from Auburn High School in 1963. He served in the U.S. Navy Joe Crain during the Vietnam War, retired from

a felony warrant for Pierce County and was arrested and transported to the Pierce County jail. She was also cited with an infraction for no seat belt. The other passenger was released at the scene and also cited for not wearing a seat belt. The driver was cited and released for driving with a suspended license and no proof of insurance. Runaway: Officers responded to the report of a juvenile runaway. Once the officers arrived, the father of the subject said they have had ongoing problems with his daughter. Her dad contacted her at a local park and left her there to cool off but she did not come home. The dad expected she may be with a friend who lives in Buckley. Officers contacted the friend’s mom and found the runaway was at his house. Officers picked her up and transported her the Bon Marché warehouse after 32 years and also worked as a custodian for the White River School District for 10 years. He married Shirlee Newell on June 12, 1982, in Buckley. He loved family gatherings, fishing, gardening, playing cards and following the Seahawks.

She told officers as she left the house, the neighbor threw rocks at her car as she drove off. It is unsure if there was any damage to the vehicle but she contacted officers because she believes the neighbor causes problems for other surrounding neighbors. Officers tried to make contact with him but were unable to. No further action was taken, the report was for informational purposes only.

The reporting party watched one conceal cosmetics into her purse. She purchased a number of items but did not pay for the cosmetics. While officers were at the store, the suspect was sitting in a car in the parking lot. After a records check, the suspect showed an outstanding arrest warrant for theft. The suspect gave the items back to the officers and was issued her a trespass from the store for a year. Officers transported her to Sumner where she was transferred to a Puyallup police officer.

Lake Tapps resident Dustin Hegge tied for 17th place on Thursday in the Washington state men’s amateur championship at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla. Hegge finished the first round with 72 and the second and third round with 73. He finished five over par with a combined total of 218. Five other players tied with Hegge. Throughout the tournament, he had nine birdies, 10 bogeys and made par 33 times.

New club opened season with tourney Seattle Polo and Equestrian Club, the newest and premier polo club in the Pacific Northwest, played its opening matches in Enumclaw for the Seattle Cup Tournament. Polo, one of the oldest team sports in history, originated in Persia more than 2,000 years ago, and has spread around the world since then. The United States Polo Association (USPA) was created in 1890, and now boasts more than 250 active polo clubs throughout the country. I’m all alone in the newsroom I have officially become fogey. How and when I slipped down that slope is a conundrum to me, but all the young reporters working for me have confirmed my fogeyness. I have hired young, talented and very smart reporters at the Courier-Herald and Covington Reporter. What was I thinking? I’m dumb and I hire brainy (palm hits my forehead). My drooling slide into ol’ fogeydom was gleefully pointed out to me last week when I told Mr. Ray Still (the Dennis Box, new reporter in Editor Bonney Lake) and Sarah Wehmann I planned to shoot a haying season shot for the front. I immediately began to think back to happy hay days on my family farm. Haying season was the hot time in the old town when I was young. I thought they would all be waiting on the edges of their chairs to hear my haying season tales of adventure. What follows is an accurate rendition of the dialogue between Sarah and I (with Ray secretly rooting her on) that has been carefully crosschecked with my imaginary friend (who always agrees with me). Sarah: “Is that a word?” Me: “Is what a word?” Sarah: “Hay…ing?” Me: “Haying? Sarah: “Did you make that up?” Me: “No I didn’t make it up. (My most haughty voice)

It’s not quite like ancient Rome

Well, friends, we’re kicking-off another football season with all the glorious hoopla that characterized the games of ancient Rome, though our games aren’t quite as brutal. Not quite. And even though some fans might hesitate to admit it, the violence is, in part, the very thing that turns many spectators on – especially male spectators. Otherwise, why the laughter and the humorous groans when a receiver gets clobbered and knocked half-unconscious? Yet, violent as it is, football is still America’s most popular sport, long ago replacing baseball as our favorite pastime. Of course, we celebrate all our sports, but somehow football seems a bit more “heroic.” And make no mistake, heroes are born on the gridiron and under the Friday-night lights. All parents want the best for their little boy and at times it seems like all the accolades are laid at the feet of football stars. I mean, doesn’t the varsity quarterback always date the cheerleading queen? So, it starts early in life. Kids 8 and 9 years old tackle one another in little league ball, gearing up for middle

school and, finally, combat on the high school line of scrimmage. Though players get injured from time to time, hopefully it’s nothing too serious. But life is hard and people get hurt, so football simply prepares kids for the real world. Furthermore, if a fellow can survive the hard knocks of high school ball and show a certain athletic skill, he’ll be in line for a college scholarship and the opportunity to really demonstrate his ability to talent scouts and a national audience. Talk about a hero! Perhaps your son even harbors dreams of actually playing with the pros, thereby making big bucks doing precisely what he wants to do. Who could ask for anything more? They’ve tried to make the game

safer. Some rules have been changed to curb the most devastating tackles and strengthen concussion detection, but all the risk can’t be removed without decimating the game itself. Of course, as with any sport, money is paramount and the bottom line ultimately determines the game’s general rules and policies. Currently, the NFL has suggested doing away with two preseason games, adding two more wild-card teams and playing extra playoff games because public interest is especially high during the playoffs, which means the owners could make a few extra nickels. After all, they have to recoup the $765 million dollars they agreed to pay ex-players who are permanently crippled by physical injuries and concussions. I recall the day they pushed ex-Husky linebacker Curtis Williams onto the U-Dub football field. He’d been severely hurt in a game, paralyzed from the neck down and confined to a wheelchair. The entire stadium rose and gave him a standing ovation. Then, a year later, he died.

Supporting Roach for another term in Senate I would like to voice my support for the re-election of Sen. Pam Roach. Although her political adversaries are trying to band together as some type of bipartisan team, don’t be fooled by who they represent (themselves!) as they endeavor to secure their personal legacies versus ensuring that all their constituents are represented.

Sen. Roach has acquired a great deal of experience dealing with local, county and state legislative issues. She is backed by the majority in her party and many organized groups. She has a very long history of supporting open and t ra nspa rent government as well Growth Management issues as they relate to protecting our schools, preserving and protecting our rural lands. She lives a humble existence and represents the family values that I desire to see in my representative. I understand that some have painted Sen. Roach as a polarizing figure in politics, but generally those who primarily serve their constituents versus making deals with corporations and developers face a more public critique. I know that I

Roach makes the efforts to meet her constituents and ask their concerns and then takes those back to Olympia. Welcome to Bonney Lake Days 2014 Greetings! Over the years we have made it a priority to provide a wide array of entertainment so that the community can come together and celebrate. We continue to make Bonney Lake Days a must attend event, which is evident by the variety of entertainment that has been provided. This year we will continue featuring a number of local businesses, clubs and booths full of information. This includes the City of Bonney Lake, Historical Society, Beautify Bonney Lake, just to name a few. Please make sure to visit all of the local vendors and organizations. I am excited for this yearâ€™s event, so myself and other local officials will be around for the event both days. If you get a chance, stop by and say â€œHiâ€?. Of course, letâ€™s not forget about all the fun stuff, starting with entertainment on Friday night followed by our 4th annual fireworks show presented by Cascade Water Alliance. On Saturday itâ€™s a full day starting with a pancake breakfast, parade, Jacoby fun run, Car Show, Skate Board Competition and a lot of entertainment on the main stage. Please donâ€™t forget, these events couldnâ€™t take place if it wasnâ€™t for all the sponsors and feedback from you. If you have any ideas or suggestions regarding how we can continue to improve your experience, please make sure to stop by the city booth and share. Thankfully, effort can bring us transformation When Paul says, “difficult times will come” – “terrible times” – he’s not referring to natural disasters or war. But what could possibly be more terrible? Answer: people being “lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power. Avoid these kind of people” (2 Timothy 3:1-5). Would you agree that the basic pieces of that description are already in place?

These people who make for difficult times ”hold to a form of godliness.” How disturbing! Speaking of which, Hitler made a show of going to church on occasion and, tragically, many Germans assumed the best about him because of this. This highlights the very problem: having a “form” of godliness is an unreliable indicator of true Christianity. Yet it’s the one we’re always looking to. Make a

conversational reference to Jesus or even just to spirituality, do a good deed once in awhile, be polite at the critical moments, make regular appearances at church, give credit to God for the touchdown, donate to a worthy cause, etc, and everyone will be satisfied. How stupid of us. A form, whether it’s a paperwork form, or a form for pouring concrete, is something that has to be filled in. By itself, it’s nothing; just an empty template with an unfulfilled purpose. The power isn’t in the form, but in the completion of its purpose; and even the template for godliness is no exception to this rule. BTW: Denying the power of godliness isn’t the same

thing as denying the miraculous power of God; it’s denying the transformative power of God. Miracles are outward. Transformations are inward. God speaks the word + Nature obeys = Miracle. God speaks the word + We obey = Transformation. (Please don’t be trite about it, obedience here means choos-

ing to learn and follow his way more accurately over time with his help; not a stunted reference to merely responding as good pets do. Note also: Miracles can be more easily dismissed by onlookers than transformations can be). We recognize that ungodliness only has power when we cooperate with it.

Entertain the idea of shoplifting and it affects your mental state; act on it and it impacts others; repeat it and its power gradually changes you into a different person. But omit the thoughts, action, repetition and it remains powerless. Simple. And it’s the same

I politely told her the term is dairy farm, or beef farm… not cow farm. Cow farm makes me want to throw up, but if I do I give them evidence to put me away in a very quiet place. OK, I admit it. The wunderkinds are a wonder and I am a card-carrying ol’ fogey. The wunderkinds can text using their fancy oppos-

able thumbs. I text with one shaky finger and it takes me five minutes to spell the word “the”… correctly. They can post pictures with their phone in 2 seconds flat. My phone calls all sorts of people for no reason. It is the spawn of Satan. The young women wunderkinds consistently side with my daughter when she won’t let me choose her boyfriends… even though I am clearly the father who know best (sounds like another cool TV show they never heard of). Fine. I am apparently a member of the lost cow farm generation… (at least I don’t have unhair like Mr. Scott Gray… please don’t let his Rotary friends know we’ve noticed). Since I have suddenly slipped down the slobbery slope of fogeydom I will now embrace it. That’s Mr. Ol’ Fogey to you.

Summer City Street Chip Seal Schedule

Over the past several weeks, the City has taken the following actions: • Concurred with the City of Sumner on the bid awards for the expansion of the sewer treatment plant in Sumner (upon completion of the project, Bonney Lake will own the majority of the capacity of the treatment plant). • Shifted the hearing of dangerous dog designations from the Hearing Examiner to the Municipal Judge • Refined the role and duties of the Parks Commission and adopted a Parks Work Plan

eginning August 18th, contractors will begin chip sealing selected portions of City streets. These include 205th on Inlet Island; 60th and 195th Place on Interlake Island; portions of 182nd, 184th, and 187th behind Lakeridge Middle School; selected portions of streets in the Bonnie Brae subdivision; portions of 97th, 203rd, 204th, and 205th in the Fir View subdivision; portions of Veterans Memorial Drive; portions of Angeline Road; portions of 96th and 196th in Cedar Grove; Portions of 103rd St E in Brookwater; and portions of 214th Ave E. “Chip Sealing” is a common street pavement maintenance practice that extends pavement life and provides a better driving surface. Local traffic in the neighborhoods to be chip sealed are notified in advance, and the City appreciates everyone’s understanding and patience. Sweeping is done 1 day following the chip sealing, and typically again every day or two for the next week to remove loose rock. 

• Amended and extended the solid waste contract with DM Disposal. In addition to Prairie Ridge, DM will be installing 3 glass recycling stations around town. DM will also be implementing automated service, and all residents will be getting new garbage, recycling, and yard waste carts at the end of the year once the new automated garbage trucks and carts arrive. Refuse rates will not increase as a result of the service enhancements.

City Creates Arts Commission

he Bonney Lake City Council has created a City Arts Commission. The initial members appointed by Mayor Johnson include: Valerie Foucart, Alison Hudson, JoAnn Taylor, Suzy Fontaine, Melissa Deckman-McVicker, Tyler Ussery, Sarah Strickler, and. Beverley Birmele. There is one more appointment to be made. The meeting place and time of Commission meetings will be announced and published. Meetings of the Commission will be open to the public. According to the Resolution establishing the Arts Commission, the general purposes of the commission are to advise the mayor and city council on matters of the arts in the Bonney Lake community; provide community leadership and assistance in advocating for, developing and promoting the arts in Bonney Lake; and improve the quality of life and enhance the aesthetic environment of Bonney Lake through art. 
