The 11-member commission was established last year by Tacoma City Council to advise the City of Tacoma on matters such as short-term and long-range transportation planning; compliance with local, regional, and federal transportation regulations; bike, pedestrian, and mass transit-related planning initiatives; and parking and capital improvement plans. The commission meets at 6 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month at Tacoma City Hall. Earlier this year, the City of Tacoma issued a call for applicants to fill four three-year terms on the commission. Seven candidates applied: Yoshi Kumara (seeking re-appointment); Justin Leighton (seeking re-appointment); Vance Lelli; Seth Lundgaard; Tara Newton; Andrew Strobel (seeking re-appointment); and Jana Wennstrom. Tacoma City Council's Infrastructure, Planning, and Sustainability Committee conducted interviews during a public meeting in July. Tacoma City Council is tentatively scheduled to vote on a resolution to appoint or re-appoint Lelli, Kumara, Leighton, and Strobel to the City of Tacoma's Transportation Commission during a public meeting on Tues., Aug. 12, at 5 p.m., at the Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market St., City Council Chambers / First Floor, in downtown Tacoma.

17th Street between Jefferson Avenue, Broadway, and South Commerce Street. For anyone familiar with the area, South 17th Street is cut off between Broadway and South Commerce Street by a small greenspace, forcing cars and pedestrians to head south on Broadway for a half-block, then backtrack a half-block north on Jefferson Avenue, before reconnecting to South 17th Street. According to a report prepared by City of Tacoma staff, University of Washington Tacoma officials approached City officials to discuss the idea of turning South 17th Street into a through street. After a series of meetings, a re-alignment was proposed that would connect the two segments of South 17th Street, preserve a portion of the greenspace, and terminate Jefferson Avenue at Broadway. The two groups drafted an agreement whereas the City would manage the project while the University of Washington Tacoma would pay for the project. According to a legal notice published this week in the Tacoma Daily Index, the project will extend South 17th Street from Broadway to Commerce Street; realign the intersection of Jefferson, Broadway, and South 17th Street; improve pedestrian amenities; construct a reinforced concrete wall, new sidewalk, bulbouts, and ADA ramps; remove and replace asphalt and concrete pavements; and add new channelization, crosswalks, street lights, and a raised mid-block crossing. The project will also include significant utility work, such as a new storm drain system; a 60-inch diameter storm transmission segment; and a water supply main replacement. The project budget is estimated at $1.55 million. A pre-bid meeting will be held on Mon., Aug. 11, at 9

2 locals could join Tacoma's Board of Building Appeals Posted online Fri., Aug. 1 Two local residents could be formally appointed to the City of Tacoma's Board of Building Appeals. The seven-member panel reviews and provides recommendations to Tacoma City Council on new additions, amendments, and proposed changes to the City of Tacoma's Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire, Dangerous Building, Minimum Housing, and Energy codes. The board also holds public hearings and makes decisions on appeals of orders, decisions, or determinations made by the Building Official or Fire Chief relative to the application and interpretation of the Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire, and Energy codes. Finally, the panel hears appeals of orders or decisions made by the Hearing Officer for the Dangerous Building or Minimum Housing codes. In June, the City of Tacoma issued a call for applicants to fill two five-year terms on the board. Three candidates applied: Laurie Bischof, Dan Fishburn, and Kellene Richards.
