7 gang members convicted in car show shooting

A costly repair to the ShoWare Center’s ice plant equipment led to higher losses than expected in the first six months of this year. The city-owned arena lost $319,963 for the first two quarters of 2014, according to the ShoWare Center income statement released last month. The arena had expenses of $1.35 million and income of $1.03 million. Expenses were

Seven gang members connected with a July 2011 shootout at a Kent car show at a West Hill strip mall have been convicted on a variety of charges. The last two of the defendants recently pleaded guilty, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Twelve people were injured during the shootout at the La Plaza strip mall, 23311 Pacific Highway S. About 250 people attended the lowrider car show. Another person was injured later that night in a retaliatory shooting at a Kent East Hill apartment. Of the 13 victims, seven were gang members, according to Kent Police. None of the injuries were life threatening. The convicted men were identified as members of the Playboy-Surenos street gang. Kent Police detectives led the effort, but nearly a dozen police agencies contributed to the investigation. Detectives, despite facing a chaotic crime scene and uncooperative witnesses, were able to build a solid case, according to prosecutors. [ more CONVICTIONS page 2 ]

One of Kent’s most heavily used and year-round multisports facilities wears a new rug. The welcome mat was infor-
mally put out to the public Friday at the popular Wilson Playfields baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse complex on Kent’s East Hill. The city of Kent and its contracted crews recently completed installing $1.7 million worth of new synthetic turf, just in time to welcome the return of soccer and other league play.
All told, 225,000 square feet of Classic HD, the latest slitfilm fiber from FieldTurf, was placed throughout the complex, according to Brian Levenhagen, Kent Parks planner and project manager. The makeover was completed on schedule, city officials said. [ more PLAYFIELDS page 14 ]

The race will be from 2 to 6 p.m. and will feature teams of drivers racing around a track for two hours. Prizes will go to the teams that complete the most overall laps in the time allowed. The cost is $400 per team, and each team can have up to four drivers. Lunch is included in the registration fee. Last year’s Karting Challenge raised $15,000 for Guide Dogs of America, the California-based charity that provides service dogs and training in their use free of charge to people who are blind or have impaired vision from across the United States and Canada. “It was very successful last year and everybody had a lot of fun,� said Local F President Robley Evans. Isai Hernandez and James Lopez pleaded guilty last week for their involvement in the shooting. Hernandez pled guilty to a charge of drive-by shooting and Lopez pled to a charge of first-degree rendering criminal assistance. Six men pleaded guilty and one was convicted at trial. The defendants are from SeaTac, Seattle, Federal Way and Auburn. Kent Police made most of the arrests in September 2011. He was sentenced for both the rendering criminal assistance, as well as some unrelated charges, and received a 41-month sentence. • Patrick Auble, 32, brother of Shea Auble, was convicted by a jury of first-degree rendering criminal assistance and was sentenced to one year in jail (work release). He hid one of the vehicles that carried shooters away from the scene and threatened to destroy evidence. Kent detectives Phil Johnson and Heather Vance led the investigation. Prosecutors said Kent Police Chief Ken Thomas was instrumental in the response to solve the shootings and in the formation of the South King County Gang Violence Initiative, which helped investigate the case.

Kent city officials plan to keep a close watch on marijuana lawsuits filed against the cities of Fife and Wenatchee by people who want to open recreational marijuana businesses. Fife and Wenatchee each ban recreational marijuana businesses. Kent also bans such businesses but the City Council is expected to consider a zoning ordinance this fall that could allow retail, processor and

The King County Council approved the first 161,000 hours of Metro transit reductions which includes Routes 152, 161, 173 that serve Kent park-and-ride lots along Interstate 5. According to Kent’s senior transportation planner Monica Whitman, another 188,000 service hours are to be cut in February barring an upward trend in the county’s economic forecast and review by an ad hoc committee. “Specific routes have not been confirmed; however, a number of Kent East Hill routes are likely to be restructured,” Whitman said. Kent firefighters used a ladder truck and basket to lift a man Tuesday afternoon from the Green River shore after a woman and man had rescued the man from drowning. A passerby called 911 at about 4 p.m. to report a possible drowning in the 22000 block of Frager Road, according to a Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority media release. When firefighters arrived, the man was on the edge of the river and conscious. He appeared to be suffering from an unknown medical condition as well as exposure to the extremely cold water of the river, said Kent Fire Department spokesman Kyle Ohashi. Firefighters and paramedics provided medical assistance to the man at the river bank until a rescue stokes basket could be lowered to them using the tiller ladder truck. Ladder trucks have the ability to lower their aerial ladder below
A 41-year-old Burien man pleaded not guilty on Monday to the stabbing death of his former wife July 20 in Kent. Telesforo HernandezRoa entered the not guilty plea to a second-degree murder charge in King County Superior Court at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent and is scheduled to return to court Aug. 14 for a case setting, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. A trial date could be set at the court hearing or attorneys could ask for more time to

Another man on the road called 911. “She got his neck out of the water and we pulled him up,” Coupe said. “When she got there, his face was in the water. The woman is the real hero.

Time for the city to allow marijuana businesses

I’m a 72-year-old retired homeowner. I have MS and regularly use prescribed marijuana. I previously took a number of very strong prescriptions. I’ve had a 70-percent reduction in this usage as well as better control of my MS symptoms. The side effects of my legally prescribed medications were, quite literally, killing me. Every study I’ve read says that marijuana is less addictive and less harmful to our bodies than alcohol and other drugs on our streets, including misused prescription drugs. Children, teens and adults die from the shortand long-term effects of alcohol and these other drugs much too frequently. Many of your neighbors use marijuana responsibly. They have jobs, raise children

Inslee water quality plan too little, too late More delay is about the only thing that any of us who live here in Washington can count on when it comes to a badly needed update of state water quality standards to protect our health. After decades of footdragging by previous governors, Gov. Jay Inslee recently unveiled his plan to revise our state’s ridicu-
lously outdated water quality standards. While the plan offers a small increase in protection from 70 percent of the toxic chemicals regulated by the federal Clean Water Act, it maintains the inadequate status quo for the other 30 percent. At best, Inslee’s plan offers minimal progress in reducing contamination;

In his June 26 opinion piece, Don Brunell discusses safety issues regarding the transport of energy products, i.e., coal and oil, into Washington. Yes, safety is an issue; unfortunately Mr. Brunell missed the “elephant in the room” – climate change. Not once did he mention the most critical issue related to the transport and export of such carbon-intensive products – climate change. Do we as the most powerful country on Earth want to perpetuate more climate disruption by shipping Montana and Wyoming coal via trains into Washington for transport to China? While we try to convince China that the biggest carbon polluters must take responsibility to solve the greatest problem ever to face humankind, are we going to help them pollute even more? Talk about double standards. Beside climate change impacts, important reasons for not allowing the transport of such carbon-intensive products are safety of such transport, significant traffic snarls in each city along the way, and the huge costs to jurisdictions and people trying to deal with it. Mr. Brunell mentions jobs – the standard argument used to get people to accept something they don’t want or need, and that would adversely impact them and their children. However, no jobs would be created in South King County. So, we would get all the costs and none of the benefits. Any permanent jobs created anywhere in Washington would be very few, amounting to a drop in the bucket. The big energy companies and railroad conglomerates would get all the profits, but none of the risks. The local citizens would suffer all of the impacts. It amounts to a selfish money grab by a few at the expense
at worst, it provides a tenfold increase in our cancer risk rate. Water quality standards are based in large part on how much fish and shellfish we eat. The more we eat, the cleaner the water needs to be. Two numbers drive our water quality standards: our fish consumption rate; and our cancer risk rate from pollution in our waters. Inslee’s plan rightly increases our fish consumption rate from the
communities. The city of Kent allows other controversial businesses – bikini baristas, fireworks, taverns, even ShoWare’s Legends (lingerie) football. Kent rightfully accepts this tax revenue. I’d like to suggest that we not confuse safe and legal recreational and medical use of marijuana with that horrible “Reefer Madness” film or with the harms caused by alcohol and the many other legal and illegal drugs available. I urge the city of Kent to allow marijuana businesses in Kent, both for the convenience of its residents and for the tax revenue. – Coleen Bertino

While giving a little with one hand, Inslee takes away a lot with the other, increasing our “acceptable” cancer risk rate tenfold, from one in a million to one in 100,000. Do you think anyone who gets cancer from the pollution in our fish and shellfish would find that risk rate acceptable? Would you? That one in a million rate has protected all of us for the past 20 years. By increasing the cancer risk rate, Inslee effectively cancels out most of the health benefits and improved water quality provided by the increased fish consumption rate. The fish consumption and cancer risk rates are supposed to protect those who need it the most: children; women of childbearing age; Indians; Asian and Pacific Islanders; sport

Residents can meet the city of Kent's new chief administrative officer and finance director during a reception from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19 in the City Hall lobby, 220 Fourth Ave. S. Mayor Suzette Cooke recently hired Derek Matheson as chief administrative officer and Aaron BeMiller as finance director for the city of more than 120,000 people. BeMiller started his new
job July 24 and receives a salary of $110,000 per year. He oversees Matheson the city's financial operations and a 33 employee department. He previously worked as finance director and county treasurer for Clatsop County in Oregon after leaving a job as the Pierce
fishermen; and anyone who likes to eat local fish and shellfish. When the most vulnerable among us is protected, so is everyone else. To make up for the loss of protection under the cancer risk rate, Inslee proposes a statewide toxics reduction effort that would require legislative approval and funding. While the idea of a large toxics reduction program is a good one, it is not a substitute for an updated state water quality standards rule that carries the force of law. No one knows what the Legislature might do, but two things are certain. There will be more delay and more opposition to Inslee’s proposal. Boeing and other opponents of improved water-quality rules will likely engage in full-strength lobbying during the session to block any meaningful change, claiming that it will increase their cost of doing business. The state has a clear duty to protect the environment,

What good is restored habitat if it does not include clean water? Washington could have joined Oregon as a leader
in protecting human health and natural resources. Oregon two years ago increased its fish consumption rate to 175 grams per day and kept the one-in-a-million cancer risk rate. Now Oregon has the highest standards of protection in the United States. Meanwhile, the Oregon economy hasn’t suffered, and not one company has

It’s all for Asia and, in fact, would burn American energy in the process of mining and shipping it to its final destination. In effect, this would mirror typical third-world countries whose natural resources are mined, drilled, stripped, and shipped to first-world countries. The fact that this would grossly impact climate disruption, thus rendering moot our country’s own very gone out of business as a result. Don’t we all deserve the same level of protection as Oregonians? Any kind of justice that is delayed is justice denied. That includes both social and environmental justice. Further delays and weak water quality standards only worsen the suffering of many. Inslee’s plan is too little, too late.

Police arrest grandmother for DUI, meth possession Kent Police arrested a 48-year-old grandmother for investigation of driving under the influence and possession of methamphetamine after pulling her vehicle over along Interstate 5.
The incident started at about 6 a.m. July 26 when a Kent officer on a return trip from Tacoma spotted a vehicle behind him speeding up and slowing down very dramatically as well as crossing the left shoulder line, according to the police

BLOTTER report. The vehicle reportedly exited northbound I-5 at South 317th Street and struck a concrete barrier. The officer then got his car behind the vehicle, activated the overhead lights and pulled the driver over. The woman had three young grandchildren in the vehicle with her. She told the officer she had been driving all night and had been drinking a lot of coffee and 5-hour energy drinks to stay awake so she could meet up with her husband in Bellingham. Because the woman spoke in a very fast and excited manner, the officer suspected possible cocaine or meth use. Another officer arrived to take the children to the Kent Police station so the woman’s husband could pick them up. Police found a glass case in the vehicle that contained crystals that later tested positive for meth. The

grandmother at first said the crystals belonged to her daughter but then admitted that she smoked meth earlier in the morning with her daughter. The officer took her to the city jail and she was later transferred to the King County jail.
Assault Officers arrested a city jail inmate for investigation of fourth-degree assault after he allegedly punched another inmate twice in the face in the jail library. Jail officials reported the incident at about 10:44 p.m. July 29 at the city jail, 1230 Central Ave. S., according to the police report. A corrections officer told police he escorted two men to the library for their allotted hours when one of the men reportedly hit the other man in the face with a closed fist near the center of the library. The guard pushed the man who threw the punches onto a table and pinned him there before the table collapsed and they both fell to the floor. The guard then struck the man in the chest

The two men had been assigned as cell mates earlier in the day. Jail officials said the man who threw the punches had been involved in at least two prior incidents of assaulting other inmates.
Theft Police arrested a woman for investigation of thirddegree theft after she reportedly took a Seahawks jersey and a pair of sneakers at about 9:40 a.m. July 28, from Kmart, 24800 W. Valley Highway. A loss prevention officer watched the woman stick the sneakers and jersey into a black purse and then exit the store without paying for the items, according to the police report. When police searched the woman’s purse they found a glass pipe, the type used to smoke narcotics. Officers also arrested her
for investigation of possession of drug paraphernalia. The woman had a theft warrant out of Redmond.
Assault Officers arrested a man for investigation of fourth-degree assault after he allegedly slapped his wife in the face during a dispute at about 10:17 p.m. July 26 at a home in the 800 block of Woodford Avenue North. The woman told officers they were married two years ago but until the last few months her husband had lived in India as he awaited authorization to enter the United States, according to the police report. When the wife came home from work, she reportedly found her husband drunk and trying to take the keys to the car. She tried to stop him but he slapped her and grabbed the keys and left in the car. Police arrested the husband after he returned to the home in the car. He didn’t speak to the officers because he said he didn’t speak English.

Their attorney, James Bible, wrote in the lawsuit, which was filed in King County Superior Court, that the Juvenile Justice and Rehabilitation Administration is responsible for “the wrongful death of Adrian Wilson because it failed to adequately supervise James Mills,� during the months it was supervising him, an interval of time when he was allegedly buying and
selling drugs, carrying guns and associating with other gang members. In April of 2012, Mills, then 18, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for second-degree murder. According to Auburn Police Detective Michelle Vojir’s account, here is what happened: On May 22, 2011, 911 received multiple reports of shots fired at the Aspen Meadows Apartments at 402 21st St. SE. Police responded and found young Wilson dead on the ground in front of apartment No. 45. Witnesses told police that Wilson and his family had been attending a community barbecue that afternoon in the common area of the complex. Shortly before the shooting, Corey Branham, who lived in apartment No. 42, showed up with Mills, who was armed. Within minutes, Adrian Wilson confronted Mills about the weapon. He was walking toward Mills when Mills pulled out the weapon and fired, hitting Wilson once in the head.

The second week of August is a time not to worry about the lawn, but do think about your thirsty rhododendrons and azaleas. Late summer is when these spring blooming shrubs are deciding how many flowers they should
wander outdoors and enjoy a summer evening. Provide your thirsty shrubs with at least one inch of water a week to keep them forming flower buds.
Q. My front lawn is turning brown but my back lawn is still green in places where the shade keeps it

A. Most lawns need one inch of water a week to stay green but during hot dry weather the grass in Western Washington will naturally turn brown and go dormant. No worries
A. Lobelia is a lovely plant but also a lush with a drinking problem. This trailing annual loves cool, moist weather and throws a fit if the roots dry out even once. New growth can occur if you keep your lobelia roots moist so cut back up to half of the damaged lobelia plant and add some fertilizer when you water. If you don’t want to wait for new growth and an encore performance of your thirsty lobelia, you can get rid of the entire lobelia plant by cutting off the top of the plant at soil level. Then the more heat-tolerant petunias zinnias and geraniums will take over your mixed basket. These colorful characters can control their drinking and still be the life of the summer patio parties.

Kent Old Timers 25th reunion unfolds Sunday FOR THE REPORTER
The annual Kent Old Timers Greater Community Reunion will run from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Kent Senior Activity Center, 600 E. Smith St. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the reunion, which was started in 1990 by two longtime citizens, Jim Bigger and Dorice Wolfrom as co-chairman with Al and Audrey Sells, Bob Brown, Alex and Evelyn Thornton and Rae Reitan as committee members.

Foliage will turn yellow if a plant has too much water, too little water, lack of nitrogen, damage from pests like mites and various disease and weather conditions. If the plant looks wilted or limp, you can suspect root damage from poor drainage, dry soil or even a mole or vole. If the yellow leaves have brown tips, than too much fertilizer or sun may be the cause. Webbing on the foliage is a sign of spider mites turning the leaves yellow and yellow leaves with green veins is often a sign that a plant is lacking in iron. Feel the soil for moisture, check for mites, fertilize and hope for the best. Kentwood’s Cheryl Havener recently was recognized as the 2013 Northwest Sectional Girls Golf Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High School Associations. Havener’s Conquerors took the South Puget Sound League North Division title, captured the league championship and finished second in the 4A tournament during the season. Ravae Canas, Jamie Huo, Stephanie Cogswell and Catherina Li led Kentwood to the highest state finish under Havener. “I was totally thrilled by it, but I also know it’s due to the girls who did well,” Havener said. “The girls were fabulous. I enjoyed working with them. They have so much energy and zest for life.” In addition, the Washington State Golf Coaches Association selected Havener as the state 4A Girls Golf Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013. Kentwood finished a sixth consecutive season undefeated in the SPSL North last fall. The Conks went on to win the league tournament Oct. 17. The Kentwood girls have won the league tournament five of the past six years. Havener enters her eighth season with the Conks this fall.

Kent United Boys 98 Green hosted an international friendly soccer match against Tambarskjelvar from Naustdal, Norway, at Petrovitsky Park on Tuesday afternoon in Renton. The match was part of the Kent Sister Cities Association youth exchange program. In 2012 the local boys visited Kent’s Sister City region of Sunnfjord, Norway for two weeks to play soccer and experience Norwegian culture. This time, the Naustdal team spent a summer week here in Kent. Kent United prevailed in the friendly, 4-3. Mayor Suzette Cooke tossed the coin to open the match. The visitors formed a team called Tamba, short for Tambarskjelvar, one of the four communes in the Kent Sister Cities Association. Kent’s sister city is Sunnfjord, which is made up of Naustdal, Forde, Gaular and Jolster. Kent has two additional sister cities, Tamba, Japan and Yangzhou, China.

Kip Brown in the U-96 Spirit of Qatar got caught between roostertails in the first turn and rode the skidfin wake of Zimmerman’s boat up and over. Brown freed himself from the overturned boat and was not injured. The hull was not damaged, but crew chief Mike Hanson said the team would have to build some parts before the race in San Diego in September. The rerun was a deck to deck battle between Zimmerman and Kelly, with Kelly taking the win by inches at the finish. Heat 2B was all Shane as he drove the Oberto away from Cal Phipps in the U-7 Graham Trucking. Phipps finished second with Greg Hopp third in the U-12 Miss DiJulio. Tom Thompson needed a strong finish in Heat 3A in the U-11 West Coast Collision Center/Peters and May to put his team in the final, and Thompson delivered. In the middle of the field at the start, Thompson timed his start perfectly and was the leader out of the first turn. Jon Zimmerman got around everyone to take the win with Thompson second and Phipps third. Shane and Kelly went into Heat 3B with spots in the final virtually assured but still waged a spirited battle for the inside lane. Shane won that contest and the heat.
[ PLAYFIELDS from page 1 ] “The whole project went fairly smoothly,� Levenhagen said. “It turned out to be a success. “It’s a really popular park, well used year round, so getting it back up and running is really huge for us,� he said. “That new turf looks great. It will play great. It will be a big improvement. I think these user groups will really like it.� The City Council in April approved the turf replacement at the complex along 132nd Avenue Southeast. The council last December approved $500,000 in the 2014 budget to help fund the turf replacement. City officials will use another $800,000 for the field from the real estate excise tax and carryover money from previous years. The rest of the money will come from delaying improvements at other parks. Kent bought the turf through the King County Directors Association, a purchasing cooperative that the city has been a member of since 1982. The park had been closed since May 12 in order for crews to install the FieldTurf and make other needed improvements. In addition, netting that prevents balls from rolling away from the fields of play has been replaced. The track fashions a new rubberized surface. Levenhagen is hopeful the new rug will last beyond its industry standard of eight years. The previous turf was stretched to 11 years. Getting the ballfields back in action was important, considering their high
demand. Wilson Playfields hosts about 1,600 games in all sports, including track and field, on an average year, according to David Heldt, Kent Parks program coordinator. When the complex closed for 2 1/2 months for new turf installation, Heldt calculates the park lost 342 games or 30 percent of its normal schedule. “It’s very vital, very well used,� Heldt said of the complex. Heldt said the new turf supports lacrosse. Reference points have been provided on the upper field and, for the first time, permanent lines have been drawn on the lower field to accommodate play. “Lacrosse is growing leaps and bounds,� Heldt said. “It’s like what soccer was probably 15 years ago. They call it the fastest sport on two feet right now.� Wilson Playfields is home to many organizations and leagues, including the Kent Parks Youth programs that field soccer, baseball, flag football, track and other teams. It also is home to teams from the Kent School District, private schools and the Green River Community College women’s soccer program. “We’re pretty excited. We really like the field,� said Sydney Martinez, treasurer for the Kent Aztec League, which offers youth, adult and coed play for the Hispanic community. “Soccer in general brings the families together for quality time.� A formal grand opening for the new-look Wilson Playfields – in conjunction with a city soccer jamboree – is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.
