Holiwell pleads guilty to charges

Dana Parnello was appointed to Maple Valley City Council Position No. 6 in a 5-1 vote by the City Council Monday night. Parnello was one of nine applicants for the position that was vacated by longtime Councilwoman Victoria Laise Jonas earlier this summer. Parnello Dana Parnello has lived in the city for 11 years and has previous City Council experience, serving an appointed term on the council from 2010-2011. He also served in various roles on the Planning Commission from 2007-2010. Council members Layne Barnes, Erin Weaver and Noel Gerken, as well as Deputy Mayor Sean Kelly and Mayor Bill Allison, all voted in favor of appointing Parnello. Councilwoman Linda Johnson was the lone nay vote.
Former King County Sheriff ’s Office deputy, Darrion Keith Holiwell, pleaded guilty Monday to three felonies in King County Superior Court. Holiwell, 49, will serve one year and a day in prison for the three crimes and one year of community custody once he is released. He was ordered to pay $1,600 plus restitution and have no contact for five years with his wife and 20 witnesses listed by the court. Holiwell was found guilty of promoting prostitution in the second degree, first-degree theft and selling steroids, a controlled substance. He was arrested June 19 and has been incarcerated in the King County jail in Seattle since then on $150,000 bail. The King County Prosecutor’s Office charging documents stated Holiwell “did knowingly advance and profit from the prostitution” of his wife. Holiwell told his wife, a former exotic dancer, to start an

Editor’s note: This is the final piece in a three part series. My cheeks feel slightly flush as I sit in front of my plate that’s holding a chicken pot pie and mashed potatoes. The questions I’m being asked aren’t making me uncomfortable, per se, just pushing me out of my spiritual comfort zone. I’m searching through my brain’s incomplete notecards on Judaism principles and practices. “Is synagogue a weekly thing?”
asks Kathy Higgins, my meal hostess, who is also celebrating her birthday. “… What is Shabbat? Is that a family thing?“ I’m not used to being the primary source on such pointed questions. Ever since college, telling people that I am “Jew-ish” has been enough. I was Bar-Mitzvahed at the traditional age of 13. I’m a biannual (at best) templeattender. I fasted once on Yom Kippur, only to find out I was a day early. I believe that faith is a good thing. The Higgins family — Kathy and her husband Steve, along with
children Spencer, 6, and Stephanie, 7 — invited me, sight unseen, into their home with the Mormon missionaries I’d followed for the day. Now, Kathy is hoping to learn more about me. “Do rabbi’s report to someone higher?” she continues. “I don’t necessarily think there would be a leader,” I respond, shaking. “There’s probably a hierarchy of rabbis, kind of. The Black Diamond City Council developed its list of nine Capital Improvement Plan priority projects at a town hall meeting July 10. The document is a six-year road map that identifies the city’s current and future capitol and infrastructure needs. The CIP is a plan, not a budget, with actual authorization for capital project spending occurring when City Council adopts the annual budget in December. Funding for capital improvements generally comes from real estate excise tax revenue, capital reserves, public trust fund loans, grants, impact fees and developer funding. The nine projects are not listed in any order and, even though they have been
listed as priorities, that does not mean they will be started to completed in 2015. Council members have discussed the projects during multiple meetings. “It’s been fine tuned as we’ve gone along,” said May Miller, the city’s Finance Director.
CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PLAN PRIORITY PROJECTS 1. Roberts Drive/state Route 169 roundabout — This project is to change the intersection control from stop control to a roundabout and accommodate a future road connection to the east for the Lawson Hills master planned development. 2. Lawson Street sidewalk phase two — Construct 1,015 feet of new 5 foot concrete sidewalk on the north side of Lawson Street from Sixth Avenue to the east boundary of

Replace primary fire engine — Replaces the newest engine in the fleet with a suitable, demo pumper that has better longterm maintenance prospects. 8. New fire station and equipment — Provide a satellite fire station sited and equipped to enhance fire and emergency medical service delivery in the community. This initiative begins with a site location study, proceeds to construct the station and ends with a complement of essential equipment in service at the new facility. 9. Ginder Creek trail and site restoration — Design and construct a 1,400 foot long, 10 feet wide multi-purpose trail and a small parking lot on Roberts Drive.

MAPLE VALLEY RUNNERS COMPETE IN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP Two Maple Valley youngsters finished strong in the USA Track and Field Championships held in Houston on July 27. Brian Martinez, 12, and Faith Martinez, 10, finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 1500 meter race. To qualify for the event, both needed to finish near the top in the state meet and Regional Championship. Brian, who won the state meet and finished second at regionals, finished with a time of 4:37, which was good enough for All-American status. Faith finished second at state, and won regionals. Her time of 5:23 also earned All-American status.
hen Erinn Cassidy decided six weeks ago to organize Digs for Denise, a volleyball tournament fundraiser for Wings of Karen in honor of her friend who is battling triple negative breast cancer, she hoped to raise $1,000. Cassidy was astonished after the tournament, which was held at Lake Wilderness Park on Aug. 3, when the total came to more than $6,000 and continued to grow, eventually passing the $7,200 mark. “It went better than I could have ever expected or imagined,� Cassidy said. Her friend, Denise Thom, has been battling the rare and aggressive form of breast cancer for the past couple of years, Cassidy said. “It’s actually the type of breast cancer they’ve done the least amount of research on,� she explained. Cassidy said that she selected Wings of Karen because Thom is a supporter of the Maple Valley based nonprofit and all of the funds raised through the nonprofit go to Seattle area breast cancer researchers. As for the idea for a volleyball tournament,
that came from both the Thom and Cassidy families involvement in the sport. Maple Valley’s Synergy volleyball club sponsored and helped organize the event. “There were just so many people who kept asking how they could help her (Denise),â€? Cassidy said. “So I thought if I organized a volleyball tournament‌I thought it would be a fun day to play volleyball and maybe raise a little money.â€? As the weeks before the event flew by, the size of the event continued to grow. “We had prizes and donations and everything coming in faster than we could manage,â€? Cassidy said. In the end, 24 teams with more than 100 players signed up. There were also games, raffles and a silent auction, and three University of Washington volleyball players came to show their support. “I would guess there were 150-200 other people who came to the park to be a part of the event itself,â€? Cassidy said. The tournament was split into age divisions with two different types of play: pool play in the morning and a single elimination bracket in the afternoon. During a lunch break

Laura and I had just returned from a weekend away and were searching for a place to park in Capitol Hill. The man on the street corner in front of our apartment building held what appeared to be a long leaf, or maybe a feather, like a broadsword. It looked as if he were attempting to start a fire — like a confused caveman unsure of his tools and what he was doing in the heart of Seattle. We searched for an open space, circling around the area for roughly 10 minutes. Of course, a spot cleared about 15 feet from the man. Good spot, bad timing. We sat in the car longer than we usually would, watching to make sure we were safe to get out and grab our luggage. He would move along. At least, we hoped he would. His shaggy unkempt hair made it hard to see his eyes. Did we want to help this man? Sure. I suppose. There are plenty of homeless people in the Seattle area that need assistance. Some are on drugs, others suffer from mental illness and a few might just be unlucky. But, in the unrefined darkness of a few street lamps, this didn’t seem like an appropriate time to find out. Or even to be compassionate. That’s when I asked myself, “What would the Mormons do?” So, later, I called Sister Webb and asked. She told me a story of a time on the mission when she approached a drunk man — she’s not good at noticing when people are drunk, she said — who kept grabbing at her hand and face, straddling her bike and telling her to kiss him. She and Sister Pearson rode away, slightly raddled, but also not defeated. “I would try to help as best as I could, but there is only so much you can do,” she told me.
A closer look at psychedelics So, before concluding my befuddled discussion about addiction and states of consciousness, I want to pay some attention to the actual drugs. They’re usually divided into three classifications: narcotics, stimulants and psychedelics. The narcotics include morphine, heroin, codeine, oxycontin, opium, alcohol, barbiturates and any number of sleeping pills (whatever chemical cocktails they might contain). The stimulants are cocaine, crack, caffeine, amphetamine, methamphetamine, Benzedrine, nicotine, Dexedrine and a number of other diet pills. The psychedelics include pot, LSD, mescaline, “magic” mushrooms, Ecstasy and any new concoction they might have been developed in the last few days. The narcotics are all depressants; that is, they depress the central nervous system. Whatever euphoric effect they produce, in the long run they simply knock you out or, at the extreme, kill you. Heroin is the most powerful and, since

You don’t want to put yourself in harms way.” Part of what I learned in my three-part series about biking with the Mormons is that there is nothing wrong with doing your best to help. Even when it is difficult or easy to pass over. That doesn’t mean you should try to be a superhero — more a reminder of the incredible feeling that comes with helping others simply for the sake of it. That makes sense to me. I don’t mean this with any religious connotations or as any kind of endorsement for proselytizing — that’s not my job or my mission. But as a journalist, I think it’s important to jump into ideas with an open mind and try to pass along a learning experience if there is one to be had. Over my eight-plus hours with Sister Webb and Sister Pearson, I not only learned a little about
the mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but also of the sisters’ true innocence and sincerity towards others. I’m glad that there are people who volunteer their time to help those in need. The sisters admitted they know they are sometimes taken advantage of in that regard, but they also feel it’s their job to help. Even if for only 18 months. And they can feel good about that. I’d like to think that is true no matter what religion you’re representing. Hopefully my stories are representative of the good that comes from belief, whether you think Mormons are wonderful, evil or somewhere in between. Laura and I ended up walking past the shaggy man, eyeing him the entire way, as he harmlessly paced along the street. We didn’t help. We didn’t talk to him. We looked at him as threatening. But as we walked, I told Laura that I wished we didn’t have to treat people that way. She agreed. Safety first, but humanity needs to be a close second. I’m glad we talked about it.
it’s a street drug –you can’t buy it in a pharmacy, though Oxycontin has a similar effect – there’s little “quality control,” which makes using it a dangerous proposition. You never know what you’re getting. Compared to heroin, alcohol is a very mild narcotic, but if you consume a large amount in a binge-drinking frenzy, it can stop your heart, just like smack. If you use a large amount of any narcotic over a long period of time, the physiological consequences can be substantial; i.e., kidney failure, liver damage, mental deterioration, etc. However, if you use them responsibly, they apparently do little physical harm. There are physicians who’ve used morphine every few months for 40 years and never suffered any ill effects. Similarly, many people use alcohol in moderation for their entire lives and have no serious physical problems. Of course, the stimulants are just the reverse of narcotics; that is, they don’t depress the central nervous system, they perk it up. Speed, in all its manifestations, gives you a jolt, a shot of energy. If you want to study all night for a final exam, pop a couple hits of Ritalin or No-Doze. However, unlike the narcotics, if you’re using a powerful speed on a daily basis for even a few
months, it can have devastating consequences on your body. Based upon personal experience and observation, methamphetamine is a terribly ravaging drug, the worst I’ve ever seen. And finally, there are the psychedelics. Psychedelics are neither depressants nor stimulants though, since they’re often manufactured in basements and broom closets, you can’t really be sure what they might be cut with. (One benefit resulting from legal grass in licensed stores is that you can be sure the product isn’t mixed with speed or any other “contaminant.”) Psychedelics are the most subtle drugs and the “trip” they produce is greatly influenced by what the user brings to the experience. If you’re looking for a giddy, drunken state that’s what you’ll get. If you’re seeking more “spiritual” dimensions, that’s also possible. In conclusion, I want to point out that messing around with any of these chemicals can be a risky proposition. Drugs are dangerous commodities, especially if you’re prone to addiction. They’re definitely something kids shouldn’t fool with. (If I have to draw an arbitrary age limit, I’d say no one under 21.) If you’re 13 or 14 years old and you’re playing around with any of these chemicals – even weed or booze – you better think twice before you flush your whole life down the drain. Trust me on this. I know the subject well.

leader, they also had a patriarchal father figure as absolute head of the family. Since their family was Lutheran, they stayed Lutheran in America. Their religious beliefs were also, like the German and Russian cultures, rigid and uncompromising. The church taught them about a God who was strict and unbending. Their world consisted of a series of opposites, black and white, good and evil, salvation and damnation. Because getting an education was required by the state of Nebraska, the children enrolled in public school and learned English as well as American culture and values. They became the translators for their parents of American culture. The Kleins had three sons: the oldest remained the most “Rooshin� as his way of coping with his Old World family and the New World culture: strict, obedient and dutiful. He was drafted into the Army during World War II and later became a policeman telling others to obey. The youngest became the most American, shucking his German culture and background in the process, as his way of coping with two cultures. In his desire to fit in, he became interested in American history, eventually ending up as a high school history teacher, teaching others about U.S. culture. The middle son was the one most caught between the Old World and the New. He became the rebel, the one who refused to obey either his parents or school authorities. Seeing his brother drafted, this son enlisted and ended up getting killed in World War II. But in doing so, he became a hero to the town and, as a result, his family was accepted into American culture. Gradually, as time passed, the family structure of the adult children became more democratic and less rigid in their beliefs. The church changed too, becoming less rigid

and unbending, emphasizing the grace of God rather than his wrath. There are lessons to be gained from these two accounts: The senator and the Senate leadership should put into practice the comment Ronald Reagan made about nuclear disarmament with the Soviets: “Trust and verify.� They need to hold themselves accountable. The story of the Kleins show us that what happens at the highest level of a culture and its government creates attitudes and behaviors that filter down to the lowest levels of society. We are living in a culture where the financial elite in their greed can nearly destroy a nation as they almost did in the economic meltdown of 2008, yet all corporate leadership escaped prosecution. Instead, the government rewarded them with taxpayer bailouts. They escaped accountability for their actions. Look at our families and our institutions and you will see a mere reflection of the attitudes of our power elite who shift responsibility onto others.

Recently an incumbent state senator was found to have misused her Senate expense account to the tune of over $5,000. The senator had been getting reimbursed for years for expenses such as a post office box and mileage expenses to and from the box that was used for state, campaign and private purposes. There were questions about other mileage charges to other locations as well. Additionally, she admitted using a state phone for personal and political use. All these items and others could cost her thousands of dollars to repay. Her reasoning for these actions was that the senate should have told her if any expenses were not allowable. The senate leadership responded with the explanation that the Senate operates on an honor system. The problem with the senator and with state Senate leadership is that neither claimed to be accountable for taxpayer money. Both are passing the buck. And that attitude seems to have become part of not only the culture of the state Senate, but also of U.S. culture. These attitudes begin with the powerful elite and filter down to average citizens. The following story is an example of that “trickle down effect�: When I taught sociology in high school, there was a story in the text about a German farming family, the Kleins, who had immigrated to Russia in the early 1800s and had settled just east of Crimea. Their descendents had lived there for more than 100 years before the Russians drove them out in a fit of xenophobia (fear of foreigners). They emigrated to live near Lincoln, Neb. As most immigrants do, they settled among their own, the father working as a laborer for the railroad. These German-Russians had difficulty assimilating and continued to speak German and follow the customs they had developed while living in Russia. Because they had lived there with an autocratic and patriarchal czar as their

This should have been expected, since much of my time was spent with Sister Mikayla Pearson and Sister Savannah Webb, who bike around the area daily, asking strangers about faith and religion, discerning the likelihood of conversion to the LDS Church. When asked, and some-

No one seemed to judge me for my responses, though I don’t think my half-explanations spawned any Hasidic converts, either. I learned much more from them. Over a period of about eight hours, we biked multiple miles and stopped at three LDS member homes (going inside twice, once for dinner), and checked up on two individuals who had shown interest in learning more about the religion.
There are 337 families and about 650 members in the Lake Sawyer Ward, which covers Covington, a majority of Kent and portions of Black Diamond. There have been 11 convert baptisms in the ward since sister missionaries took over two years ago. There have been only 20 total in the last five years. To put this in perspective, some wards in Salt Lake City baptize upwards of 150 new members each month. Hours prior to my meal
with the Higgins family, we met with Sister Jenny Wolf, who recently moved into the ward. While Wolf went to get her Bible, the sisters sat next to her infant son, whose mini elbow perched up on the couch armrest. The cuteness was almost too much for the sisters to handle. But there are rules on their mission. And one of them prohibits holding babies. I presume this precedent is out of liability concerns.

So do the sisters. However, when I ask Randy Grover, the director of public affairs for the Kent Stake of the Church, about it later, he said he’s never heard of that rule. Apparently the specific stipulations vary from mission-to-mission, ward-to-ward. One constant of at-home visits, though, is some sort of scripture discussion led by the missionaries. With baby in tow, Wolf, who missioned in downtown Tokyo in the early 2000s, turned on a video “message” from mormonchannel.org. There are dozens of these videos on the site that feature gospel songs attached to uplifting messages about everything from bullying to testimonies about Jesus by the Church’s living apostles. After the video, Pearson read scripture from the Book of Mormon and the trio discussed its current day application. Wolf opened up, quite frankly, actually, about difficulties she’s encountered as a first time parent. She talked about asking God for help. “There are times when I’m like ‘are you even listening?’” Wolf said. “But there are times, too, where I wake up the next morning completely refreshed even though I’ve only had four hours of sleep.” The threesome then prayed together. The sisters gave Wolf a challenge before leaving: to pray for gratitude – don’t ask for anything, simply thank the Heavenly Father for the gifts she has. And then we were off. … Steve Higgins, the witty Brit who originally thought Mormons were Amish and spent their weekends in “witches covens,” is explaining his conversion to the LDS Church. He was 21 and was convinced to attend a weekend retreat. He was skeptical, to say the least. “I was completely intolerant,” he admits. “I knew absolutely nothing.” But he enjoyed the clean fun, confidence and honesty of the LDS believers he met. Then the music started. “At that point in time I’d never danced sober,” he says. “So that was kind of weird — to do not-drunk dancing.” Steve explains that he couldn’t get the weekend out of his mind. He called a local Church bishop for more information. After only a few lessons, Steve invited his friends to a baptism. The water immersion ceremony was held Sept. 3,
1995. “When you feel the spirit, when you get the prompting to the spirit, when you read the scriptures and take the challenges that are in the scriptures to pray... it’s a very hard thing to deny because you felt something,” he says. “And it’s just something that you don’t usually feel. Like a warmth.” … I received an email from Brian Gilman, of Renton, shortly after my first story in this series published. Like me, he was born Jewish, but decided to convert to the LDS Church and is now part of an organization of Jewish-to-LDS converts called B’Nay Shalom. The group was founded in Salt Lake City in 1967, but a Seattle chapter of between 25-30 members opened last year. B’Nay Shalom is not officially connected with the church, but received approval from the church presidency. I called Gilman for his story. How did this happen? Turns out, it took time. A lot of time. A Bar-Mitzvah bred Cleveland native, Gilman is proud of his family heritage — which includes greatgrandparents who were killed in the Holocaust. Though he’d occasionally attended temple for the High Holy Days (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur), he never felt truly religious. The 48-year-old met his wife, Kathi, a non-practicing Mormon (at the time) in 1991. She refocused on the LDS church in 1999. Gilman spent six years in “religious limbo,” as half of a “part-member” family, attending church gatherings and listening to the missionaries. But nothing really clicked. He wasn’t interested and had no desire to learn. “Really I was just supporting my wife and her callings in the church,” he said. Gilman told me that the main thing holding him back was Jesus. “As a Jew, I had no idea or conception of Jesus Christ or Messiah,” he said. “He wasn’t part of my life growing up. I didn’t know how to accept that. I had a hard time accepting Jesus Christ.” Then, suddenly, he said, something changed while watching a church video he’d seen multiple times before. “I had this overwhelming feeling that I hadn’t experienced before,” Gilman said. “I felt that was the answer I was looking for.” [ more Bike page 7 ]

We are not hiding anything, but we also don’t claim that the Lord doesn’t expect much of His children.” About half way through my questions, Robert snuck in his own: “what role has religions played in your life?” That was followed by: “We would love to be able to set up a time and present why we believe what we do, and how you can come to know as well.” ... Following dinner and a rendition of “Happy Birthday to you…” I followed the sisters via car to an appointment with a prospective convert, 21-year-old Pratik Loomis. Pearson met Loomis in the rain on the street. They’ve had multiple sessions, often on a big rock near his home. When we arrived, Loomis said he was busy and needed to reschedule. I asked him why he’d decided to talk with the sisters in the first place. “Just to find faith,” he said. … I say my goodbyes to the sisters. It’s time for me to go home. I’d give them hugs, but that seems like it might be against the rules. It’s also fairly unprofessional. We shake hands and head to our respective vehicles. I turn on my engine and notice Pearson jogging to my window. “Wait,” she yells. She hands me a pamphlet titled “The Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ” and asks, “Will you read it?” I smile and, this time, my brain doesn’t swear and quickly search for an escape excuse. “I will,” I respond. It’s a miracle.

Tilia Trees will perfume your garden We may call this the Linden tree in America, but all over Europe the little-leaf Linden or Tilia cordata is successfully used as a fragrant street tree, blooming in late spring and early summer. Very tolerant of city pollution with well-behaved roots, the Tilia tree would be a good choice as a patio tree and can even be sheared into a hedge. Different varieties of Tilia are available in dwarf or columnar forms but all have a silver color on the undersides of the leaves, butter-yellow fall foliage color and a symmetrical branching pattern. There is even a Tilia tree that is native to North America. This tree deserves more
use in American gardens. Cleome is the hottest new plant for beds and planters This annual flower is also called the spider flower because the fluffy pink, purple or white blooms explode with spider-like petals. The new, more compact cleome varieties make this summer bloomer a low maintenance “thriller” plant that does not need staking yet blooms taller than your more traditional geraniums and petunias. We saw cleome grouped in the center of island beds, used as focal point flower in container gardens and even as tall edging flowers to create a hedge along walkways and sidewalks. In dry soil and warm areas this annual can reseed to a fault but the newest varieties are hybrids from Proven Winners and
mosquito larvae and other insects. • Note blank spots in your garden, then plant late summer bloomers to add color, making sure they get enough water during the hot, dry weather to become well-established. • Mow your lawn more often to defend against weeds. Grass also goes dormant this time of
the season, so water brown lawn regularly and deeply. • Plant fall and winter vegetables. Toss overgrown or rotting produce on the compost heap. • Harvest herbs and dry them in a cool, airy and shady place, or freeze. • Prune and fertilize Halloween pumpkins for big results,

MAPLE VALLEY FOOD BANK SEEKS DONATIONS The Maple Valley Food Bank & Emergency Services is increasing the number of summer food bank visits for households with schoolage children. Families who live in Black Diamond, Covington, Hobart, Ravensdale and the Tahoma School District are eligible. The food bank is asking for donations of kid-friendly foods, such as peanut butter, jelly, macaroni and cheese, soup, tuna, mayonnaise and cereal. Monetary donations are also asked for the wholesale purchase of milk, eggs, meat and fresh produce. The agency is also helping fill backpacks with grade-level appropriate supplies for young neighbors. Donations of new school supplies will be accepted until Aug. 17. Holiwell was a firearms instructor at the Ravensdale firing range and a member of SWAT, the King County Sheriff ’s Office Tactical Team. He began working as a deputy in 1995. The theft charge involved stealing brass casings and turning them in for credit to three local vendors and using the money as a personal slush fund. He also stole live ammunition. At the hearing Monday before Superior Court Judge Bruce Heller, Holiwell read an apology for his crimes and the embarrassment he has brought to the Sheriff ’s Office and his family. The judge called him a “disgrace.â€? Holiwell was described in charging documents as a “highly skilled marksmanâ€? and a “proficient competitive shooter on a national level.â€? Witnesses told the investigators Holiwell owned high-quality personal firearms, a mix of military-style rifles and handguns. The court order stated he cannot own or posses any firearms. According to the investigator’s report, his residence was searched upon his arrest and no firearms were found. The gun safe was also found to be empty. Arrangements are being made for the firearms to be turned in. The case broke when his wife found out he was having an, “intimate dating relationship with her twenty something year old friend.â€? His current wife contacted Holiwell’s second wife and described the domestic violence she experienced. The former wife “was so overwhelmedâ€? by what she heard she contacted a friend who works for the

Urquhart said June 19 that he is concerned the Holiwell case may have exposed a case of corruption inside the sheriff ’s office. The sheriff said Holiwell may have been selling steroids “inside the sheriff ’s office‌.â€? Urquhart said some SWAT team members may have been involved in purchasing and using steroids. The sheriff he intends to “root out this kind of behavior inside the sheriff ’s office.â€?

Bronson quiets the noise at training camp BY ERIC MANDEL

The raucous practice atmosphere at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton no longer rattles Demitrius Bronson. The former Kentwood High School star is soaking in the professional game, competing for a roster spot with his hometown Seattle Seahawks, while the coaches and local and national media dissect every snap. Bronson competes in all running back-specific drills and subs in for plays during team drills. He saw extra action while running back Marshawn
Lynch held out for a new contract. Lynch ended the holdout last week. On July 29, Bronson stayed after the scheduled practice for a few more reps after not being in the normal rotation. Afterwards, Bronson told The Reporter that he is making strides forward. “It’s just a blade of grass a day,” he said. “They are teaching me as if I’ve been here for 10 years… which is good. There are limited reps. You’ve gotta be near perfect.” Bronson said each day starts at about 6 a.m., with a full day of meals, weight-lifting and practice.
“It’s going good though,” he said. “Being a pro basically.” Bronson said he’s learning from other, more veteran running backs in camp and is confident in his abilities. He is not intimidated by the superstars all over the lineup anymore. “They’re my family,” he said. “My brothers.” As for all the attention from the thousands of fans who show up each day of training camp? It was surprising the first day, but since then he’s “locked in.” “You hear the noise, but you’re not really paying attention to it,” he said.

Eastside won last years National Championship title in the U-14 age group. They were the first Washington team to win the National Championship since 1999.

An opportunity born out of voter approval for charter schools in Washington in 2012 has turned into a flurry of activity for Elke Rushton. Rushton, who lives in Maple Valley, is leading the charge to establish a charter school in the Covington area. It’s a grassroots effort to provide a different take on education. “We aren’t going to revolutionize school,” Rushton said. “We will be a small school, but offering another option.” The stated mission of the school, which has been named Mountainside Classical Academy and is envisioned as a K-12 school, is “to train the minds and improve the hearts of young people through a rigorous, classical education in the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue.” Charter schools are, in essence, public schools with no tuition charge and entrance gained through a lottery system. The Valley Medical Center has completed development of a new primary and urgent care clinic in Maple Valley. The clinic is located at 26458 Maple Valley-Black Diamond Road SE and began accepting patients on Aug. 4. The urgent care clinic is open until 8 p.m. weekdays and 4 p.m. on weekends for walk-in appointments or patients may call ahead to reserve an appointment. I had to break up with my dentist, because I can no longer continue on the professional journey he is on. That’s all I will disclose; the point is, I had to break up with someone. I dated quite a few men before I met my husband, but really only broke up with a couple. The others just kind of drifted away after one or two dates because either they weren’t interested or I wasn’t. My first “big� breakup was via postcard (20th century text message). We had a long distance association for several years and had only met a couple times in person. Sure, I may have had teen-like fantasies that I would marry him, but we were really only friends. The year I turned 21, he chose to end the friendship via postcard while I was a
camp counselor. It was not difficult to let him go considering the method of breakup. There’s not much privacy in a camp, especially mail call, which was conducted in a field with all the other counselors and campers. I was just lucky it arrived between sessions. The only other big breakup I had was with a man I was dating in college. It was my longest, traditional relationship and I can’t really remember exactly what happened, but it was a mutual breakup. It was rather devastating as we were a couple for nine whole months. Although I knew I would not marry him, I thought it would last through college; study buddy if you will. We tried to remain friends, but you know how that goes; especially because

he found a girlfriend right away. I have broken up with other professional services before; the most notable being my car/homeowner’s insurance company. I was baffled every year when I put our RV back into active status and my checking account would get hit with an extra $300 or so dollars. Every year I’d call and ask why it was so much. Every year the receptionist would try to explain it to me. Once I had her good and confused, the agent would try and explain it to me. I never understood how they came up with this big number: something about pro-rating, pre-rating, post-rating, the ambiance of the sun when June’s honey moon is waxing gibbous. One year I finally got tired of feeling ripped off and I switched to an insurance broker who found us a better rate with a smaller, local insurance company. The price on my bill for my RV when I activate it for the summer? $35. That was a

But besides those two men, nothing was ever really spoken; the relationships just came to a natural demise. This whole dentist issue is the first breakup letter I’ve ever had to write. Partially because I owed him money, but also because I’ve been seeing him around 20 years, I felt he deserved better than a postcard, plus he’s a really good dentist. For me, a person who loves to walk into a restaurant and have my regular waitress meet me at my table with a Diet Coke, it is devastating to have to find a new dentist. I crave consistency in my professional relationships. Breaking up is hard to do no matter who it is.

Three Maple Valley athletes were apart of the Auburn Acers 10U fastpitch softball team that won the ASA 10U A Western National Championship in Salem, Ore. The Acers finished as the only undefeated team in the weeklong tournament, which was held at Wallace
Marina Softball Complex. The Acers are the first team from Washington to win Western Nationals. California teams had won the past nine years. Maple Valley athletes were Kaiea Higa, Emma Dazell and Brenna Henry. The team finished the season with an overall record of 44-6-2. They also won the NSA State and ASA State Championships.
