Permitting effort sees mixed response
WALKING TO FIGHT CANCER The football field at Vashon High School transformed last Friday into a camping scene, as around 100 islanders on a dozen teams set up tents and prepared to spend all night walking around the track in shifts. “Every year I say ‘How am I going to stay up all night?’ and then I get here and I get it,” said Jeannette Smith, who attended Relay for Life with a team from Sawbones. This year’s event raised more than $19,000 for the American Cancer Society. Those who participate, however, say Relay for Life does more than raise much-needed funds for cancer research and patient services. Julie McCormick-Saathoff said it brings islanders together behind a common cause. The all-night event, with the slogan “Cancer never sleeps, so neither do we,” includes a gettogether for survivors, games and a Luminaria Ceremony, where paper bags honoring those who have died from cancer are lit all around the field.
Half who did shoreline work have responded By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer
In 2009, Rodney Hearne refaced his bulkhead at Sylvan Beach, something he said he and his family members have done many times since 1928, when his grandfather built their walk-in home. In June, however, Hearne received a letter from King County informing him that he may be required to seek a construction permit for the work he did. After following up with the county’s Department of Permitting and Environmental Review (DPER), he learned that he did in fact need a permit, and that obtaining it would cost about $1,900. “I’m not very happy about it,” Hearne said last week. Hearne’s property was one of 72 on Vashon identified in a study completed last spring as

having had shoreline changes in the last decade that could require permits. Unpermitted changes around the shore of the island include bulkhead repairs, bulkhead installations, clearing of vegetation, and the construction of docks, stairs or other structures. Two houses were found to have been built entirely without permits. Since then, 40 homeowners have responded to letters sent out by the county, according to Jim Chan, DPER’s director of permitting. DPER staff have investigated each case, and of those who responded, 32 homeowners must now seek construction permits. Six people didn’t actually make changes or did work that was too minimal to require a permit, and two people will be required to remove structures they built. This fall the county will send another round of letters to those who didn’t respond, this time including a deadline and an explanation of what action the county will take next. SEE PERMITTING, 20

Islander took a risk with beans and built a coffee empire By JULI GOETZ MORSER Staff Writer
In his kitchen overlooking Quartermaster Harbor, Jim Stewart, the founder of Seattle’s Best Coffee, grinds coffee beans from his farm in Costa Rica. The kettle whistles. Stewart pours the steaming water over the grounds, using the drip-brew method to fill a narrow, well-worn thermos. There’s not an espresso machine or coffeemaker in sight. Stewart takes his coffee black, in a demitasse. While today Stewart is known on Vashon and beyond as the man who brought fine coffee to Seattle, 44 years ago he never drank the dark beverage. Ice cream, not coffee, was the name of Stewart’s first retail game.
Stewart sold 18 flavors of ice cream at The Wet Whisker, a shop he opened in Coupeville in the summer of 1969, between graduating from the University of Washington and starting optometry school in California. As Stewart tells it, the path to Seattle’s Best Coffee began with the two women who did The Wet Whisker’s taxes. “At the end of that first summer, they said we have this donut recipe — to hear them talk it was going to save the world — and there are these great coffees in Monterey, California,” Stewart recalled, shaking his head with a humorous glint in his bight blue eyes. Longtime consignment shop closes, another expands into its space Wendy’s Weather’d Wear has closed its doors after 15 years selling clothing on consignment in Vashon town, and Luna Bella’s will expand into its former space. Wendy Rogers, owner of Wendy’s Weather’d Wear, said last week that she was closing the shop and moving off-island for reasons related to her husband’s death. Her husband Jeff Rogers, known to many as Rambo, died in January of a heart attack. Wendy Rogers, who has lived on Vashon for 40 years, said she loved the shop and was unhappy to close it, but she hopes to spend time with family before settling elsewhere. Meanwhile, Luna Bella’s, another clothing consignment shop across the street from Wendy’s, announced last week that it will expand into the space. Owner Diana Anderson said that space has been tight at Luna Bella’s.She’s been hoping to expand for some time, though she’s not happy to do so “under sad circumstances,� she said. The new space, which will be called Luna Bella’s Too, will carry clothing for the whole family, Anderson said, with items for women, teens and children, as well as a limited selection for men. Luna Bella’s will become a women’s only shop. Anderson, who is now working to hire additional staff, said she hopes to open Luna Bella’s Too before the end of the month. It will have the same hours as the original shop, she said, but it will have separate customer accounts. “I didn’t expect this to happen,� she said. “It’s exciting.� — Natalie Martin

VCC struggles with nurse shortage, seeks RNs Care center hopes to hire island nurses By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer
Vashon Community Care, facing a nurse shortage that adminsitrators call concerning, has put out a call for local nurses to consider applying there. The assisted living center north of town currently has positions open for two registered nurses (RNs). It has been seeking applications for several weeks, but has had very few responses. “I was just feeling kind of at my wit’s end last week,� said Donna Zaglin, director of clinical services at VCC. “I’m trying to appeal to that person who’s not working full time that would come in and work here.� The care center recently lost two RNs who quit their jobs for personal reasons not related to VCC. Both Zaglin and VCC Administrator Janelle Ansell say it’s unusual for the center to have more than one RN position open at once, and they normally don’t have such difficulty hiring nurses. Ansell and Zaglin say that with 10 nurses normally on staff, being down two is significant. It means that other nurses must work more overtime and the center relies more on on-call nurses, something Ansell said isn’t

Vashon rider selected to compete in national championship
Travel and Leisure names Thai restaurant one of Islander has been doing dressage since childhood country’s best Travel and Leisure magazine recently named May Kitchen + Bar to its list of the best Thai restaurants in the United States. The popular restaurant in Vashon town was included on a list of 20 restaurants published as a June web exclusive. The author praised the eatery’s warm interior and traditional fare, particularly the pad thai, which she called the most authentic. Owner May Chaleoy has garnered praise from critics before. In 2008, Seattle Magazine named her former Thai restaurant in the Wallingford neighborhood one of Seattle’s 10 best restaurants — an honor no Thai restaurant, up to that point, had received. Of the most recent accolade, Chaleoy said the whole restaurant was thrilled. “To make everyone happy, I’m happy,” she said. The restaurant is busier than ever, Chaleoy said, and she’s considering opening a booth at the Farmers Market, where she would offer appetizers and Thai iced coffee.

This month islander Jen Verharen will participate in her first internationally recognized dressage competition, a goal she has been working towards almost her entire life. “The idea of partnering with an animal to achieve athletic accomplishment is just like breathing to me,” she said. Verharen and 14 other rider and horse teams were selected from 50 hopefuls to participate in the Markel/United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) National Developing Horse Dressage Championships. The competition is highly specialized, open exclusively to horses between eight and nine years old. It will be held in Wayne, Illinois, from August 20 to 24. Verharen, 43, is currently ranked 14th in this category nationwide. She qualified by participating in local competitions that had special verification by the USEF. “I was really competing nationally, so even if I did well in all of the local competitions, it didn’t mean I would qualify,” Verharen said. Dressage, often referred to as “horse ballet,” focuses on the nuanced training of the horse. During competitions, the rider guides the horse through a variety of steps and techniques, with minimal command, and with the goal of appearing effortless. With roots dating back to the Renaissance, modern dressage stays true to many of the methods developed by the first riders. “Dressage is about training of the horse,” Verharen said. “But it’s really the intersection of sport and art like nothing else I’ve seen.” Verharen was originally drawn to horseback riding at age 3, when she first moved to Vashon.

Jen Verharen will compete nationally in dressage. She fell in love with the sport, and by age 11 she was teaching lessons to her neighbors to save money for her next horse. “Horses are such a great way to grow up,” Verharen said. “They teach you to be responsible for someone outside yourself, even at a young age.” As a child, she participated in Vashon’s Pony Club. Today, she teaches lessons to the new Pony Club riders and values this opportunity to “give back to the sport,” she said. Verharen decided to focus her own riding on dressage about 11 years ago and now primarily teaches dressage in her private lessons. Married with a young son, she continues to teach jumping for the Pony Club as well. Due to the subtle nature of dressage, it is crucial that the horse and rider have a strong connection, Verharen said. Her own horse, Antano, is a 9-year-old Dutch warmblood Gelding who

she described as the most “eager, sweet, playful” horse she has ever known. She began working with Antano six years ago, and this is their second year competing together. “I originally thought he would make a good kids’ horse, but he has had very surprising talent,” she said. “He is also super serious about his work.” When she is not teaching, riding or competing herself, Verharen is a life and business coach, primarily for athletes. She coaches clients over the phone, which allows her to work with athletes, both professional and amateur, around the country. “The reason I became a coach evolved out of my wanting to cast a broader net, and have a broader impact on the people I was working with as a riding instructor,” she said. Verharen sees the national competition she’ll compete in this month as an opportunity for both herself and for her students. “One reason I want to go is it’s such a great learning experience, and I get to bring that back to my students and clients,” she said. Beyond the rigors of qualifying, the competition also poses a monetary challenge. Transportation of Antano alone will cost Verharen about $7,000. County still faces tough transit decisions
County should consider why many ignore permits
Running a safe, efficient and reliable transit system is one of my top priorities as your county councilmember. Since April’s defeat of Proposition 1, which would have provided funding to maintain buses and the county’s roads network, the King County Council and Executive Dow Constantine have worked to find a path forward on the bus cuts needed to better align our revenues with costs. No one likes cutting buses, so the policy debate is heated. Everyone at the county knows that bus cuts will have a real effect on the people of King County. Cuts will make commutes longer for everyone — both bus riders and those who drive cars to work. Increased congestion could slow our economic recovery. Yet, we must tread carefully and avoid short-term gimmicks to address a long-term structural gap in our financing. So what does all of this mean for Vashon and Maury Islands? Vashon and West Seattle routes that you rely on aren’t slated to see reductions until September 2015. There will be little certainty around these cuts until we proceed through the budget process. The county is preparing in multiple ways for this budget process. We are undergoing a peer review of Metro bus service operations and a separate third-party evaluation of our fund management policies. Also, we will be debating additional fare increases and how to improve public input. It is going to be an interesting and busy late summer and fall. In the meantime, I think it is important to share some of the history and circumstances that led us here. The Great Recession,
It’s been said that Vashon Islanders tend to ignore construction regulations and often build without permits. And results from a recent study suggest the same thing, showing that a majority of homeowners who did work on the island’s shoreline in the last decade failed to seek permits. King County’s permitting department, which normally only investigates complaints, is now using the survey to narrow in where construction can most affect the environment, on the water’s edge. In recent years scientists have learned much about how construction on the shoreline can impact the beach. Building new bulkheads and other structures, and even removing trees, can result in a loss of important habitat for fish and other creatures, habitat that is already becoming sparse in Puget Sound. Building codes play a part in protecting the sound. However, most shoreline construction, perhaps with the exception of clearing and docks, can still be permitted. Environmental protection should happen when residents seek those permits. Going for a permit before the work is done gives the county an opportunity to ask for changes that would benefit the environment, and even to suggest alternatives that would accomplish the same job without as much harm. It’s encouraging that King County isn’t only going after permits, an act that by itself will do little to help our shoreline. The permitting department is also taking a look at why so many islanders have ignored permitting laws. And officials are considering what they might do differently in the future to play more of a role in shoreline work on Vashon. Various factors could be at play: the high cost of permits, lack of knowledge about regulations and narrow definitions of what requires a permit. For instance, should rebuilding a bulkhead that already existed still require a permit? On one hand, permitting is the law, and the county can enforce it. But as one county official said, many islanders had good reasons to do what they did at their homes. We hope officials take a hard look at how islanders interact with the regulations and what the results have been. Perhaps some flexibility on the county’s part, and even some willingness to reconsider its own rules and practices, would bring more people to the table when it matters most.

more about what’s really going on in the world than a lot of us do. That’s because those citizens figured it out. They know their governments lie and so they seek out more reliable information in other places. In recent years the internet has been a place where honest journalism can be found but it now takes a lot of time and intention to find it. How long those remnants of honest journalism will be available to U.S. citizens remains to be seen, but it should be a priority for us to know what’s really going on. It’s vital to understand that we are now each other’s last and only hope for keeping freedom alive in America, because the institutions that were created to do that are no longer working. I can’t say more than this here in 300 words. All we have now is ourselves and our shared commitment to one another if we expect to live in a culture that supports justice, truth and a fair distribution of wealth and opportunity among its citizens. We need to keep the channels of communication between us open and on a personal level, we need to do it with integrity and good will... and we need to do it now. — Mark A. Goldman

Like fossils, some jobs should be left to the experts Of all the jobs I’ve had, I’d have to say that working for a natural history museum was one of my favorites. It was in the department of Geological Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum. My coworkers were some of the brightest and friendliest folks I’ve ever worked with. In fact, if I had it to do over, I think becoming a paleontologist would be pretty high on my list, right below being a trustfund baby. Finding fossils has always been in my blood. I remember as a kid poking around Mrs. Hope’s yard looking for adventures. Our house was newly built with a boring yard and stunted little baby trees, but hers was filled with old-growth nooks and crannies. As a bonus, Mrs. Hope wasn’t opposed to giving the neighborhood kids a treat. I thought she was neato, too, because she had a gigantic beehive hairdo. I imagined a coiffure such as that would be an excellent place to carry my Legos and was pretty sure that’s where Mrs. Hope kept hers. Mom, however, put the kibosh on that idea pretty quickly. For some reason she didn’t want her fourth grader sporting a beehive. She was funny that way. One day while exploring the Hope Reserve, I looked into the culvert that ran under her driveway and saw a dinosaur egg. I wasn’t quite sure how a dinosaur had laid an egg in such a place, but there it was, plain as day. I
HUMOR By CHRIS AUSTIN lay down in the ditch and reached as far as possible, just barely grabbing it. Standing up, I was covered in ditch ooze, but it was a small price to pay for a prehistoric egg. Well, the dino-ova turned out to be a softball and not even a good one at that. It was plastic with cheesy faux-stitching around it. Disappointed as I was, my fascination with extinct plants and animals and the thrill of discovering them has never left me. That’s why I jumped at the chance to work with the paleontologists at the county museum. My job was to take data collected in the field and produce different types of maps for the boffins to pore over. Every now and then, though, I would get to go out with the crew and look for fossils. One particular job concerned a huge housing tract that was to be built in Las Vegas. Before they let the backhoes loose on the land, the contractors had to get the OK from all the “ologists.” The paleontologists looked for ancient life, the biologists looked for endangered species, and the archaeologists

looked for signs of human activity. I think the archeologists were the most important because we all know that building on top of an ancient burial ground never ends well. For the first two days, it was less Indiana Jones and more Bataan Death March as I slogged through the Nevada desert. The only signs that I was even close to Las Vegas were the burned-out cars riddled with bullet holes. One of the keys to finding fossils is identifying the small differences between the fossils and the soil they are eroding from. It didn’t help that I am color blind. Anyone that has ever seen my choice in clothes can attest to this fact. Yet on one of the many undulating hills I saw a chunk of something that looked slightly different, then I saw another and another. I followed them up the hill like bread crumbs. Reaching the top, I saw the unmistakable outline of a gigantic mammoth tusk. I was so excited I nearly stewed my pants. I found one of the curators and nearly yanked his shirtsleeve off towing him to my find. He took one look at it and said, “Oh yeah, we found that yesterday.” Sad trombone music played in my head. Another project produced an enormous and interesting set of data that I plotted on a map. I was fortunate enough to be asked to share the map at the annual meet-

ing of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP). On the evening of the last day, they had the awards ceremony. As I sat at a table, each of us explained our circumstance. As we went around the table, I noticed that just like dog owners look like their pets, paleontologists look like the things they study. The turtle guy looked like a turtle, and the badger lady looked like a female badger (which I learned is called a sow). All of the awards and recipients were unknown to me, and my mind tended to wander. I was snapped back to the proceeding when the emcee announced that it was time to present the Homer Simpson Award. I slapped the table and guffawed, “Homer Simpson, ha! It’s good to see you guys have a sense of humor.” I couldn’t have been more in error. The stone-faced badger lady spoke. “It’s the Romer, Simpson Award. It is named for Alfred Romer and George Simpson, and it is given for outstanding scholarly achievements. It represents the highest honor bestowed on a paleontologist.” Actually I think there should be a Homer Simpson prize, one awarded to the person that squeals like a little girl when discovering a fossil everybody knew about the day before. Band combines sound of cumbia with ska and rock The free Concert in the Park series continues from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Ober Park with the band The Cumbieros. The group is a Seattle-born, multinational cumbia band made up of musicians from Chile, Brazil and North America. Cumbia is a genre of music and dance that originated in Colombia and is now popular across Latin America and features such instruments as violin, accordion, guiro, guitar and horns. The Cumbieros fuse traditional and contemporary South American cumbia with the modern sounds of ska and rock to create fun, high-energy dancing music.

Fresh off several international film festival premiers, filmmakers Scott Schaefer and Steve Edmiston will bring their award-winning independent short film “The Maury Island Incident” back to Vashon on Tuesday, Aug. 12. The film will be shown as a fundraiser for the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association “We’re coming back with the full film, and we’ll be more than happy to share our secrets this time,” Edmiston said with a nod to their April visit, where only parts of the film were shown due to constraints imposed by film festival regulations. The film had its world premiere at the Big Island Film Festival’s seemingly tailor-made, under-the-stars opening in Kona, Hawaii, on May 22 and its North American premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) on May 25. “It worked out really well. SIFF was happy,” Edmiston explained. “Even though Hawaii is a state, it’s considered to be part of Oceania, not North America. So SIFF was able to host the official North American premiere, and that’s what they had wanted.” Based on information gleaned from declassified FBI documents, the film’s story of an alleged UFO sighting off Maury Island in June

There’s also enough mystery to throw a widely held historical convention into question. Although the Maury Island events were reported and investigated first, pilot Kenneth Arnold’s sighting over the Cascade mountains and the widely publicized alleged UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico, are often referred to as the beginning of the UFO era that gripped the
country in the 1950s and ‘60s. Whether salvager Harold Dahl’s story of strange discs hovering off the coast of Maury Island and raining burning metal slag onto his boat is true or not doesn’t matter to Schaefer and Edmiston. Their focus is on the story itself, its local
and historical significance and its potential for further development. “We just want to tell this story,” Edmiston said. “It’s truly fascinating.” And growing, according to Edmiston. As the film is garnering more attention, more people are coming forward with their own recollections of the events surrounding the incident. “We’re hoping that people continue to feel comfortable approaching us. The more information we collect, the closer we are to something bigger,” he said. The wheels of that “something bigger” are already in motion as the online, independent film streaming service IndieFlix is set to launch “The Maury Island Incident” webisodes as their first original series on Aug. 19. Add to that screenings at the Port Townsend, Tacoma and Burbank, California film festivals this fall, and Schaefer and Edmiston appear to be well on their way to putting “The Maury Island Incident” on the map and into the history books. “There is so much of this story that we couldn’t fit into this short film,” Edmiston said. “This is just the beginning.”
Edmiston and Schaefer will host a screening of “The Maury Island Incident” 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12 at the Vashon Theatre. Admission is by a $10 suggested donation, with all proceeds going to benefit the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association.

Rock n’ roll, blues and soul define Moonroof Moonroof played at Strawberry Festival and will return to Vashon due to popular demand to play the Bike at 8:30 p.m. Friday. Based out of the industrial heart of Los Angeles, Moonroof is a four-piece group built on a foundation of rock and roll, blues and soul. The group turns its root music into three-part vocal harmonies, guitar duels like the Allman Brothers and smart songwriting, and uses the collaborative influence from all members of the group. The music combines the sound of funk, jazz fusion, classic rock and soul. All ages are welcome to the free show until 11 p.m., then 21 and older.

Vashon Allied Arts’ annual outdoor summer concert Bramblefest was named in honor of the many brambles that grow abundantly across the island and bear fruit at the peak of summer. VAA envisioned a family tradition of listening to music at an outdoor concert and capturing the idyllic summers that characterize Vashon. Bramblefest will return to Camp Burton from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday with world beat music from Cuba, Brazil and Spain. SuperSones has been called Seattle’s answer to The Buena Vista Social Club. They play the music known as son — acoustic dance music of the Cuban countryside that inspired modern salsa. The genre blends Spanish guitars, Afro-Cuban percussion and swing, call-andresponse singing and trumpet improvisation. Since 2001 SuperSones has played this musical tradition with a wide range of classic and original songs in the many styles within the son family, including bolero, cha cha and guaracha. The band Maracujá delivers the languorous and nostalgic sounds of bossa nova and energetic samba with its version of Brazilian music from the 1950s to 60s. The group reinterprets hits from popular Brazilian artists such as Joao and Astrud Gilberto, Sergio Mendes and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Maracujá guitarist Terrence Rossnagle speaks of how this music invokes saudade, which is a Brazilian Portuguese word for a
deep emotional state of nostalgic longing that is simultaneously both happy and sad. Caitlin Belem (vocals, saxophone) has lived and studied in Brazil and Cuba, and sings beautifully in the original Portuguese. Dhara Goradia (upright bass) and Sam Esecson (percussion) round out this dynamic quartet. Flamenco guitarist Ben Woods and dancer Stephanie Pedraza will return to Vashon for an encore performance. Wood’s virtuoso guitar-playing and Pedraza’s expressive and fiery flamenco moves impressed audiences at last November’s performance at VAA. A talented and prolific flamenco guitarists, Woods is known for his innovative blend of flamenco and metal and has recently traveled across Europe as part of the Master Guitar Tour. Based in Vancouver, B.C., Pedraza has her roots in Colombia, where she was immersed in Latin song and dance. Her original music compositions reflect her rich Latin American background, blending traditional Latin rhythms with pop and jazz.

CANCER NEVER SLEEPS Relay for Life has become a global effort, as each year more than 4 million people in 20 countries walk throughout the night to raise money for the American Cancer Society. This year a dozen teams on Vashon raised money before and during the Friday event, including the Cancer Crusaders, which raised the most funds at $7,350. The Sawbones team came in second, raising $2,660. Sawbones team member Julie McCormick-Saathoff said she believes islander continue to hold Relay For Life because it’s “a cause that hits every family.� At the fundraiser, each team was required to have one person walking around the Vashon High School track at all times. Some people donned costumes, while survivors wore purple T-shirts. Participants who weren’t walking could socialize and enjoy thumping music playing over the loudspeakers, sleep in their tents or participate in activities throughout the night that included games like Twister, limbo and musical chairs. Historical but dilapidated cabin torn down Last week the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust tore down a cabin that once belonged to Artemus Judd, an early Vashon settler for whom Judd Creek is named after. The property where the cabin sat, just off Vashon Highway near the mouth of Judd Creek, was recently purchased by the land trust, adding to a patchwork of properties it has protected around Vashon’s largest creek. The cabin was decades old, but hadn’t been lived in for about 30 years and had not been maintained, according to Tom Dean, director of the land trust. The cabin didn’t pose a threat to the environment, Dean explained, but was beyond restoration and considered a liability, he said, noting that land trust properties with homes are often broken into. “It was an attractive nuisaince,” he said. Artemus Judd, often called Captain Judd, was born in Canada in 1840. He traveled throughout his life and homesteaded on Judd Creek, though the cabin that was torn down was not his original home. He died in Florida in 1927. Dean said the cabin was never designated a historical landmark, and he checked with the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association as well as the state Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation before the land trust had it removed. The project was funded through a recent donation as well as a grant the land trust obtained. This summer land trust interns have been removing invasive plants around the mouth of Judd Creek, and this fall the land trust will work with the county on a restoration project there.

About 20 local elementary and middle school aged children worked on projects to beautify the island as part of Vashon Youth and Family Services’ summer art camps. The children gathered in two week-long sessions headquartered at the PlaySpace and worked on two public mural projects. One group designed and created a mural for the bus shelter at Burton, which will be installed by Metro in the next several months. The other group designed and painted a mural at the VYFS main campus depicting an underwater world. The VYFS summer art camp has been happening for over 20 years and is run by counseling staff and interns to provide children fun and creative opportunities.

Diversity abounds in school woods used by students and walkers MEANDERINGS By ANN SPIERS Meanderings is an occasional series on local walks by author and naturalist Ann Spiers. The quietest way to enter the Chautauqua Forest is at the trailhead located where Beall Road ends at SW 198th Street. Here, a sign maps the main north-south trails and lesser east-west rambles. The hike loops through the Vashon School District campus woods, buildings and athletic fields. Open to the public, the 40-plus acre forest comprises the entire east boundary of the school property. These acres buffer the orderliness of the developed campus with the wildness of native flora and fauna. Walk west through evergreen huckleberry bearing fruit so thick one can “milk” the berries into a carton. Above, madrona, high crowned with blistered trunks, may not be the healthiest individuals. However, in late winter, hundreds of gregarious American robins migrate here to feed on the madrona’s red berries. In winter, the male’s song challenges the grey skies with cheerily cheer-up cheer-up cheerio. Turn south on the trail to parallel the school buildings. During the school year, noises are familiar — basketballs thumping, coaches instructing and buzzers demarcating the school hours. Closer, wind disturbs the trees’ high crowns, and the small brown creeper sings a high tsee as it spirals up the mature fir trunks. Sometimes there is a soft quiet, and weather changes the ambiance. Soon you cross a slough bridged with two boards, a split sequoia log felled on campus. The slough drains surface water from Chautauqua Elementary School to a retention pond, and then off to Tramp Harbor. At the next trail post, choose the path to the retention pond. Built in 1993 to function as a water catchment, the pond was once cleared annually of vegetation. In 2009, King County awarded the school district a grant to turn the pond into wetland habitat while preserving its function of capturing runoff. Native flora was planted, and frog and newt eggs were introduced. In summer, the pond is bone dry. On its rubble edges and bottom, willow and grasses stake a claim. After the autumn rain, water fills the basin. In summer, Cedar Waxwings perch in the willow tops, and in winter, water fowl brighten the water. Circle the pond. Crowding the east fence, the shrubby, sticky-leafed Snowbrush is a host plant for the eggs of the California Tortoiseshell butterfly. Look for its plump, curved cocoon hanging from the stems. Its lower end looks like a horned and beaked helmet. The black and yellow caterpillar is bristled. The butterfly is russet with a black border on the upperside wings; its underside wings look like brown bark. Growing around the pond, yellow daisy-like Tansy

Found at the Chautuaqua Forest pond, the caterpillar of the cinnabar moth devours the tansy ragwort, poisonous to livestock. Ragwort is poisonous to some livestock. Folks pull it and leave it trailside. But look more closely. Some plants crawl with black and orange caterpillars, soon to metamorphose into red and black cinnabar moths. Decades ago, an island orchardist introduced the moth locally, and folks argue to keep a few tansy ragworts around to host the natural eradicator of ragwort. Feeding on ragwort leaves, the caterpillar’s damage appears to “melt” the plant. Return to the main trail and keep left to continue south. The next major intersection is marked with a boulder and a sign. You can continue south to the high school, through the thistle field, curve toward the school gym, and then weave through the buildings as a way back north. Or you stay in the forest by choosing the most westerly north-leading trail. If you stay in the forest, exit the woods by one of the side paths leading west onto the athletic fields. Stepping out from the dark woods, you step onto much more than the Field of Dreams. You emerge onto a field of light. For most of us with woods all around, rarely does Vashon offer a wide sky view from southeast to west. Star-gazers and comet watchers have here a clear view of celestial phenomena. Cross to the north-south paved path. This path with its

bench midway provides a walk-out for physically limited islanders needing firm ground. Walk north on the path through the school buildings. Cross the Chautauqua parking lot to its northeast corner. Re-enter the forest where the entry sign displays tiles made by high schoolers. Some tiles depict the forest flora and fauna, while others stray off-topic, featuring mythic beasties and a nuclear power plant. This north-to-south stretch, looping back south to Beall Road, is undergoing restoration. Big trees were cut due to root rot. Other trees were cut and some trails closed to lessen the chance of windfall harming walkers. The forest was opened up so sun filters in. The lay of the land now is evident. A wide ravine, muddy in the wet season, crosses from the northeast toward Chautauqua. To increase forest health, a diversity of native flora, such as cedars, snowberry and vine maple, was planted among the existing natives of fireweed, red elder and trailing blackberry. Unfortunately, the sunnier acres and cleared ground encourage invasive plants. Now, one side of the trail grows Himalayan blackberries, thistle and nipplewort, and on the other side grows the original range of flora. Which species will persist depends on the attention of the hard-working stewards. To return to Beall Road, choose among the many paths. In this area, some trails have banked curves and low jumps constructed by dirt bikers. Mid-woods, high school science students fenced an area for one of their deer exclusion plots. Two clearings outlined by branches are muchused classrooms. And for the birds, the stumps of the recently felled madrona sprout new growth. If the trees reach maturity, robins will continue to return in winter. Over time, groups have lobbied to replace the forest with development. The question remains: How to protect Chautauqua Forest? Recently, one level of protection was accomplished through the county’s and state’s requirement for wetland buffers and forested space to be included in the permits for the new high school. Another protection, according to Facilities Director Dave Wilke, resides in the school district and the wider community perceiving the forest as having cultural value. Wilke, describing the district’s commitment, believes that the deeper the school district invests in the forest, the more the students, youngest to graduates, perceive the forest as having value. He defines the investment as use of the forest through the daily curriculum and through its care and restoration. “Our hope is that what we do and the way we do it [with the forest] becomes normal, becomes automatic,” he said. — Ann Spiers is a local writer and the coauthor of “Walks, Trails and Parks on Vashon Island,” a guidebook that is available at Vashon Bookshop,The Country Store and Thriftway.

Not intending to leave optometry, let alone sell coffee, Stewart found the women’s suggestion rattling around in his mind as he drove toward Los Angeles and optometry school. So he stopped in Monterey to check out JJ Adams coffee. He liked the ambiance of the shop, the burlap bags on the walls and how it smelled. But the eureka moment came when Stewart discovered The Coffee Bean, a specialty coffee shop in Los Angeles. “They had coffee samples, and it was like whoa, this coffee has flavor. Each one is different from the other. So I started drinking coffee,” Stewart said. And he started selling it at The Wet Whisker, buying from a wholesaler in Portland. Roasting came along the following summer, after Stewart learned the art while working at The Coffee Bean. By the third summer, Stewart’s younger brother Dave became a partner of The Wet Whisker, and in 1971 the two opened another store at newly developed Pier 70 on Seattle’s waterfront. When Stewart left optometry to sell coffee, he said the move happened because he was going through a divorce and not thinking clearly. But coffee and the success of The Coffee Bean also drove the decision. “That coffee was different. People didn’t know what it was,” Stewart said, refilling his tiny cup with the piping hot liquid from his thermos. In those days, coffee was about $1.59 per pound retail, Steward said. In grocery stores one could get three pounds on sale for 33 to 39 cents. “But it just tasted awful,” he said. Visitors to Stewart’s house are greeted by an impressive elk head hanging in his entryway. It is one of many trophies for the man who grew up hunting in northern Wisconsin. Stewart is still an avid hunter, but he credits the time he spent working at The Coffee Bean for opening his eyes to a whole other world than the one he grew up in. “People were coming in like Robert Redford and Cary Grant. I mean for a 21or 22-year-old kid from Wisconsin, you could hardly believe you were there,” he

Karla was diagnosed with breast cancer soon after Grace’s birth but fought hard to live for her girls, accepting every treatment option available to her and often demanding her doctor to think of a new plan. Her never give up attitude kept us all strong. Rhea moved in with Karla three and a half years ago and provided all her in home care and was her constant hospital companion. Without her, Karla would not have been able to stay in her home and be with her girls, for this Karla and her extended family are very grateful. Karla loved to read and play computer games and she had recently learned to knit and make wonderful scarves and enjoyed making jewelry. Karla loved to camp and had hoped to make one last camping trip so we hope heaven has a forest. Karla is survived by her daughters Shelby and Grace, her parents Dan and Rhea Harvey. William Erdt. Chan said ultimately those who never respond will face fines. Laura Casey, an environmental scientist for DPER who has been working with homeowners, said most Vashon residents she’s talked to have been willing to discuss what they’ve done at their homes and even allowed her to visit when necessary. Many island properties were flagged for cleared vegetation, she said, something not typically allowed by the county, as well as bulkhead repairs, as bulkheads require upkeep and can be damaged in severe weather. “A lot of people have really good reasons why they did what they did,” she said. Many, however, must now obtain what’s called a shoreline exemption permit, Casey said, a permit that costs $670. Some will also have to complete an environmental review process that will add $987 to the bill. Casey called responses to the county’s effort mixed, but “most people have been very polite and very cooperative,” she said. As for the two unpermitted homes, she said it turned out the county already had a code enforcement case open against one, at Dolphin Point, after a complaint was filed, and the situation with the other one is not yet clear. County

tax records say the lot on Glen Acres Road is empty, but the owner says a cabin and bulkhead have been there “forever.” The owner believes there’s been a mixup, Casey said, but won’t allow anyone to visit the site. “Without permission, I’m not going to look,” she said, adding that the owner would receive a second letter. David Raymond was contacted by the county after he installed a wooden ladder on the dock outside his home on the north end. He said that he would rather remove the ladder than apply for a permit. “Unless the permit is free, which I doubt,” he said. “I’ll put a temporary rope ladder down here. I’m not going to give those guys a dime.” Several people contacted by The Beachcomber said they had received letters and even applied for permits already, but declined to comment on the record. Several people criticized the effort. “I hope to heck they don’t overdo this business of intruding on people’s private property to implement their wishes as far as the waterfront is concerned,” said Robert Linroth, who owns a small vacation home on Tramp Harbor. Linroth received a letter from the county, but found there was a property line mixup and he won’t need any permits. Still, he said he’s been contacted by the county for similar matters before and it makes him uncomfortable. Chan, however, believes some don’t understand the county’s

current effort, which he said is not about bringing in funds. “We definitely don’t need the extra work,” he said. “We are really busy already.” A recent study of the marine shoreline of King County completed by the Department of Natural Resources and Parks (DNRP) found that despite large restoration projects undertaken in recent years, shoreline construction has outpaced those efforts. As a result, there has been an overall loss of natural shoreline in an area known as Water Resource Inventory Area 9 (WRIA 9), which includes Vashon and Maury. The results have prompted concern among officials and activists who say the already sparse natural shoreline is important habitat for salmon and other creatures and is vital to maintaining the health of Puget Sound. As part of the study, researchers compared current aerial and boat-based photos of the shoreline to those taken before 2005, identifying changes that had taken place outside. Of the 93 changes identified on the coast of Vashon and Maury (some properties had multiple changes), only eight of them had been permitted by King County. Chan said that DPER wants homeowners to obtain the necessary permits, but it’s also using the opportunity to look at the effectiveness of its own regulations. As the county works with homeowners, it’s getting a better idea of why so many people on Vashon have skipped getting permits for shoreline work. For instance, some people didn’t realize they needed permits, Chan said, and in some cases the work was done by prior owners. “Some are just ignoring the requirement and would rather ask for forgiveness than permission,” he added. Chad Magnuson, who lives on Raab’s Lagoon, said he is glad to see the county taking steps to protect Puget Sound, but he has mixed feelings about how they’re doing it. Magnuson was contacted by the county about a small ramp and floating platform he installed. He will now removed it rather than attempt to get it permitted, something the county said likely won’t be possible. His family used the float to swim and launch kayaks, Magnuson said. Charlie and his buddy Oliver were adopted from a shelter as kittens. Their owners have had to move and are unable to take them along. Charlie is “Mr. Social� and likes to be front and center. He will win you over the minute you meet him. He is what we refer at the shelter as a major mush cat, one who is totally sweet and lovable. Charlie came to VIPP on 5/7/14.
Dear VIPP, We were a bit nervous about bringing a new kitten into our home but after only two or three days of cautious meetings, a bit of hissing, folRiley & Morgan lowed by a brief period of disdainful indifference from Riley, they became the best of friends.
