Patrons wandering into the downtown Bremerton Library this week got a little taste of Japanese culture. Special guest Mary Mariko Ohno, a transplant from Tokyo, Japan, filled a small portion of the library with Japanese music, chants, singing and dances for onlookers. Ohno, who owns a dance studio in Tacoma, visited Bremerton for the first time on Monday afternoon. Bremerton resident Erick Painter brought his two little boys to the event for some exposure to a different culture. Painter spent some time

as an exchange student in Hiroshima as a young adult. “I really like to share it with them,” Painter said of the Japanese culture. Painter and others sat on the floor of as Ohno and three of her dance students performed different dance routines and songs. For one special number Ohno and two students performed on the shamisen — a three-string musical instrument — and played the familiar tune from the Mario Brothers video game. Ohno’s dancers also brought out scripts with easy Japanese songs and encouraged the audience to sing along. Ohno sang a verse and

then asked audience members to mimic her, allowing for a playful atmosphere that left most kids bobbing their heads to and fro. Dances special to the Japanese culture dotted the hour-long performance by Ohno and her students. At the end, she encouraged the youngest library visitors to get up and dance with her. “All the little ones were so happy,” Ohno said. Some in the audience weren’t just lucky to have wandered upon the event, presented by Kabuki Academy. One parent of a dancer follows the troupe from city to city. Eric Dennison of Silverdale,

has trailed behind his daughter, Ariel, 18, from Tacoma to Kingston for the last year and a half she’s been involved with Ohno’s studio. She’s even learning some Japanese. “She’s really into it,” he said of his daughter, whose Japanese stage name is Akina. Once a month, they travel around to attend performances, some with audiences as large as 4,000 people, Dennison said. Ever the proud dad, Dennison brings along his camcorder and camera. “It’s amazing. I can’t take enough pictures,” he said. “It’s really neat when we walk through an area and she gets stopped to take a photo with someone.”

The Kitsap County Deputy Sheriff ’s Guild hasn’t determined which candidate it will endorse in this year’s Kitsap County prosecutor’s race, but it has decided who it will not endorse — incumbent Russ Hauge. The guild announced last week, in a strongly worded statement, that while it was still assessing the other three candidates for the prosecutor seat, it had decided to officially oppose Hauge and encouraged the voters to consider one of the other three candidates in the August primary. Running against Hauge are fellow Democrat Bob Scales, Republican Tina Robinson and Independent Bruce Danielson. Guild President Jay Kent explained that the guild took the unusual position of issuing an “anti-endorsement” because of its strong opposition to Hauge. “The prosecutor’s office is a mess and Hauge is responsible for that,” Kent said. “We are not going to get the office’s problems fixed until he leaves the office.” Kent said the guild wanted more time to assess the other three candidates, but it is “firmly set” against Hauge’s reelection. Hauge said he was disappointed that the guild was not supporting his re-election effort. “The issues that they raise are issues that we really have no control over, nor can I comment on them. We act as legal counsel for sheriff’s office and county commissioners, who manage labor contracts and pay. We’re

essentially just the lawyers and anything I say to the county commissioners or the sheriff is subject to the lawyer-client privilege and I can’t rally talk about.” Hauge noted that the deputies guild, unlike many other public sector bargaining units has for years used mandatory arbitration as a tool for negotiating contracts. Those arbitrations are contested legal matters, in many ways similar to an ongoing legal trial, and are adversarial, Hauge said. “It’s an adversarial legal proceeding and we represent, by law, the adversary of the deputy guild in these legal proceedings, that is the sheriff’s office management and county commissioners,” Hauge said. “The positions that we take in the mandatory arbitration that the guild asks for, are positions that we are instructed to take by our clients. A lot of things get said in the context of litigation, but consider the source. Personally, I think every sheriff’s deputy should make twice as much as what they make now. I’m sorry the deputy guild is taking it personally.” Kent, though, explained that the guild and its members had “no confidence” in the Prosecuting Attorney Civil Division. “We are especially unhappy with Hauge’s manageSee full ment of story on the civil law m a t t e r s ,” website Kent said.

The top two votegetters in the primary will advance to the Nov. 4 general election. Report all crimes, large and small In the past month or so, the increasing number of small crimes occurring in my Union Hill neighborhood have been on a significant and personal rise. My own property has not been impacted, as far as I know, but we take additional precautions with some solid fence improvements, gates that are closed at night and a large barking dog that lets everyone know when he sees or hears someone on the property that he does not know. Neighbors on both sides of me and on surrounding streets have discovered that various levels of theft have occurred on their property as well as in or around their vehicles. One neighbor, up at 1 a.m. with an 8-week-old baby, looked out to see a man going through one of the cars in his driveway. I was honestly shocked when several neighbors affected by crime told me they did not report the crimes to 911 at the time they occurred. The reasons varied: it was late at night; they did not want to bother the police with such a small problem; the guy going through their car was just looking for change, obviously homeless and they did not want to get him in trouble; and so on. It has always been my own personal policy to report any crime that occurs however big or small. I understand that I am not in any

sort of position to prioritize any crime. However, it is my very important position and responsibility to report it to those that can by calling 911. Bremerton Police Department

Colleen Smidt Captain Tom Wolfe was kind enough to pass on some advice to me regarding what the police department would prefer that residents who are victims of such crime do when it does occur. Report crimes to 911, large or small, immediately. CenCom triages all incoming calls and places them into a priority basis that are dispatched and responded to in kind. Higher priority calls have resources directed to them first, but officers do eventually get to the lower priority calls. At times, they will contact the caller themselves or have dispatch do it if

there is going to be a delay. There is a perception that would have callers believe that all officers do all day is respond to high priority calls and that low priority calls are a bother. That is NOT the Bremerton Police Department belief. Many times there is an officer not that far away and will be right on top of the issue if dispatched. Please allow officers the opportunity of stopping a crime in progress or future crimes by reporting it immediately. This is what they are here to do. Give the 911 dispatcher as many descriptive details as possible. Height, weight, skin color, clothing, facial hair, hair coloring, a license plate if possible or the direction of travel. Remember that the block watch concept is very basic. You, as a resident, become the eyes and ears for the police department. Criminals who know they are being watched will go elsewhere. Ensuring that city resources are allocated or budgeted towards active community solutions requires that data be collected to show that a problem exists in the first place. If crimes are not reported, solutions will be few and far between until they are brought to police attention. Help your community by reporting crimes.

Whaling Days was a great success On behalf of the Silverdale Lions and Kiwanis clubs I want to thank everyone that came out to watch the First Federal Bank Whaling Days Parade on Saturday, July 26. If you missed it, tune into Comcast channel 12 or Wave Cable channel 3. Virtually all the work before and during the parade is done by volunteers and we would like to thank the following individuals and organizations for stepping forward to make this year’s parade a success. Our judging team of Captain Williamson, CO Puget Sound Naval Shipyard/IMF; Captain Zwolfer, CO, Naval Base Kitsap; Pat Burch, Lions Zone Chairman 19-C4; Kathleen Knuckey, Silverdale Chamber of Commerce Executive Director; Pastor Edward Denton, Silverdale Methodist Church; Cyndi Hueth and Dana Donohue of First Federal Bank; David Foote, Kiwanis Lt. Governor; and our Grand Marshal, Sheriff Steve Boyer. Our support team included the parade sponsor, First Federal Bank. Chico Towing pro-

vided a reviewing stand platform and Gordon Sound set up the PA system. Our announcers were Bud Grahn and Rob MacDermid. Silverdale United Methodist Church provided reviewing stand chairs and the Silverdale Target Store allowed the use of their parking lot as a staging area. Port of Brownsville commissioner Jack Bailey provided radios used to manage the parade and WestSound Community Television videotaped the parade. Rick Leenstra transported the Grand Marshal and Boy Scout Troop 1540 helped pick up litter. Members of the Silverdale Dandy Lions, the Silverdale Kiwanis Club and Jim White of the Kitsap County Sheriff ’s Office, along with his support team, coordinated road closures and traffic control. This great community event would not be possible without the support of the individuals and organizations listed above. I would encourage everyone to express their appreciation by thanking the individuals the next time you see them or give them your business when you need those goods or services. Local challenger Bob Scales actually received the Kitsap Patriots Tea Party’s highest ranking! Finally, I know how Mr. Hauge’s local challenger Bob Scales works, because I served with him on city council for four years. In my opinion, his behavior is not good representational government. Instead of encouraging teamwork with colleagues and community members, his approach is combative. As a result, many of his own policies he promoted while on city council were shortsighted and not in the best interests of the community, including the effort to move the Bainbridge Island Municipal Court to Poulsbo, against strong community objection. Candidate Scales’ mean-spirited ill will towards fellow coun-

cil members, city committee/commission members, and individual citizens was not, in my opinion, acceptable behavior from an elected official. He consistently made derogatory public comments and/or personal attacks from the council dais to citizen members of the Ethics Board, Utility Advisory Committee, former Municipal Court Judge Carruthers, and former Civil Service Commission Examiner Hendrickson. His approach with colleagues and community members was to belittle, mock, shame, and/ or debase those that did not support his personal views. He often misused his own arguable personal interpretations on the law in attempts to discourage debate. I believe it is one thing to disagree with some-

A Persian proverb states, “Courteous men learn courtesy from the discourteous.” Having experienced the continual discourteous behavior of candidate Scales, I know how important it is to elect respectful and cooperative individuals who display the ability to work well with others. Over the two decades of serving as Kitsap County Prosecutor, Russ Hauge has exemplified respectful manner and thoughtful decision making. Prosecutor Russ Hauge has earned our vote.

man with machete chases woman Last F r i d a y, dispatchers received a call about a man with a machete chasing a female. The caller flagged officers down, noting the male ran westbound on Sheridan Road. The female told Bremerton police officers that he had swung at her and

left two cuts on her shoulder, which were bleeding. The two have a child in common, but they had not been together for years, the woman reported to BPD. The female said she saw the man at her house when she drove past, and not wanting to confront him, she stopped at the Sheridan Mini Mart. According to charging documents,

the man swung at her when she got out of the car. He then opened the back door of the car and took her children’s PS3, their clothes and her clothes before running away. The female told authorities drugs were the reason he was “acting crazy.” A K-9 unit could not locate the man. Based on the victim’s statement and damage

W h e n deputies arrived, they found the glass front door broken. The church’s facility director arrived on scene, claiming he did not know the woman and she had

no right to break into the church. Video footage showed the woman wrapping her belt around her fist before punching through the glass of the front door to enter. Her blood alcohol content level was .232, according to deputy reports. She was booked into Kitsap County Jail on burglary in the second degree.

Kitsap Bank opens new branch in East Bremerton Kitsap Bank opened its brand new East Bremerton Branch July 21. “Kitsap Bank was welcomed into the East Bremerton neighborhood over 50 years ago, and we are very pleased to contribute to its revitalization by providing this new, upscale facility at the same location where we’ve been since 1961,” said Chief Executive Officer Steve Politakis. John Glomstad, the first

manager of the original branch when it opened 53 years ago, was welcomed as the first customer at the new branch during the opening. A ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration are scheduled on Kitsap Bank’s 106th anniversary on Friday, August 8. “We are proud that this project brought together great local talent in the design and construction of the building,” said Politakis.

“Several local companies, including BOE Architects, RFM Architecture and BJC Group were engaged in the design and construction of this new facility, which utilizes green building practices.” Incorporated in the construction are a number of energy-efficient, sustainable solutions, as well as solar power and re-purposed materials from the previous branch. The

majority of the materials from demolition were recycled, totaling 205 cubic yards of brush, stumps and clean wood waste; and 1,089 tons of asphalt, concrete and metal. Additionally, usable furnishings and fixtures from the former location were donated to Habitat for Humanity and Northwest Furniture Bank. The new branch features clean, contemporary design, leading-edge

technology, a welcoming environment and versatile community space. The facility accommodates the Kitsap Bank branch and one tenant, Starbucks Coffee, which opened on July 25. Established August 8, 1908, Kitsap Bank is headquartered in Port Orchard and operates 21 locations throughout Western Washington. With over $900 million in assets,

Those questions were: 1) Prosecutors are some of the most powerful elected officials in Washington state. Why should Kitsap County voters trust you with this office? 2) What will your philosophy be regarding charging decisions and the plea-bargaining process in criminal cases? 3) A good deal of a prosecutor’s attention is consumed by civil matters. I understand the complexity of the often times interrelation between civil, criminal and domestic relations law and the consequences of poor legal advice and ill advised litigation. I view litigation as the last resort to a problem. 4) There are two very large issues in selecting the next prosecutor. The first is the “revolving jail house door” which I intend to close by fully prosecuting repeat and violent offenders. The second major issue is insuring that the civil division of the prosecutor’s office avoids costly civil litigation whenever possible and that we

ney, advisor and analyst, as well as by citizens who have followed my public service career. 2) A charging decision should be based upon two factors: the facts and the law. Unlike the current prosecutor, I would never file reduced charges in order to save money. Plea negotiations should be based upon the strength of the case. If new evidence comes to light after a charging decision is made, a prosecutor might consider offering a reduced charge. Otherwise a defendant should be expected to plead guilty as charged or go to trial. 3) I am the only candidate for Prosecutor who has hands on municipal law experience working for a governmental entity. For two and a half years I was the Director of the Government Affairs Section at the Seattle City Attorney’s Office, supervising a team of attorneys handling public disclosure issues, tax and collections, and constitutional law matters. We advised elected officials and City departments on a wide variety of civil matters and assisted in preparing legislation. 4) The Prosecutor’s Office needs a leader who can restore the community’s trust and confidence in the criminal justice system. Protecting and assisting victims of crime should be the office’s top priority. Vindictive prosecutions and the revolving door for repeat offenders must come to an end. I have a proven track record of successfully managing challenging public safety problems and I am committed to serving the public in a fair and just manner.

TINA ROBINSON I served 10 years in the Air Force, management in private sector business for 12 years, and worked as a defense attorney representing indigent defendants accused of felonies from simple drug possession to murder for nearly 8 years. It is this combination of experience that makes me uniquely qualified to serve in this position. I also will be fiscally responsible with taxpayer dollars, utilizing alternative dispute options rather than costly litigation in civil cases. 1) The Prosecutor must balance great power with its enormous responsibility. As the elected prosecutor I am accountable to the taxpayers – who want to know that their tax dollars are being used wisely and that crime is appropriately addressed. As a manager, taxpayer, and prosecutor I will balance the great responsibility with the power, never forgetting who I work for or what I work for. I want to do this job, not aspire to a bigger job. 2) I will make fiscally responsible charging decisions concerning low level crimes and aggressively prosecute crimes against personal security. Plea bargains are appropriate when the case is weak, or the defense is strong, and when a victim is involved, the victims wishes should be considered. However, if cases are charged appropriately, bargaining down charges should be minimal. 3) Actually, about 90 percent of the work done in the prosecutor’s office is the criminal work. However, the civil work affects 90 percent of the citizens. I am a skilled manager who will hire the best people to lead and work in the civil division. I will also complete a top to bottom review of the civil division and set policies to address issues. I will also develop a way to measure whether the changes are successful. 4) Each candidate has a different opinion, however, I believe it is inappropriate charging and failure to consider victims concerns or desires in the resolution. I will set policies addressing charging decisions and measure the outcomes. I will ensure all deputies and staff are trained in communicating with victims. Bremerton resident Timothy Ray Richardson, 40, was sentenced Monday in Kitsap County Superior Court to 12 years in prison for child molestation. Richardson, a co-owner of the Wang’z N Thang’z restaurant in Bremerton, was arrested by Bremerton police in March and denied allegations that he had sexually assaulted the 13-year-old victim in the case. Richardson pled guilty, though, on June 16 to two counts of child molestation in the second degree. He was sentenced to 72 months on each count and the sentences will run consecutively, meaning he will serve 144 months in prison. As part of the sentence, Richardson will also have to serve 36 months of community custody upon his release from prison. Community custody involves regular meetings with Department of

Corrections officers and a variety of other conditions that must be met in order not to go back to jail or prison. The victim in the case told police that the molestation started in California when she was 11. She said Richardson would “come into her room at night and touch her vagina and breasts.” It continued to happen even after the family moved to Bremerton from California. Based on information in the charging documents, during incidents of molestation, Richardson would tell the girl “you’re mine” when she told him his touching made her uncomfortable. The child also told detectives she was taken to his restaurant where he “laid a coat on the floor” and “would turn off the camera because his wife has the ability to watch the cameras on the internet” before performing oral sex on her. Richardson also told the victim he would take her virginity.

Mental health BBQ slated for Aug. 9 Partnering for youth Achievement, a ministry of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, and Emmanuel Apostolic Church are sponsoring a Community Mental Health Awareness BBQ from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, at Bremerton’s Kiwanis Park. Organizers note that one in three people with diagnosable and treatable mental illness never

seek help due to fear of judgement and isolation. Pastor Richard Johnson from Mt. Zion has been working with various community leaders to spearhead the event, which is hoped to evolve into an annual event aimed at informing the public about mental health issues. The free event will feature food at no cost, information about mental health and various fun and

educational activities. The barbecue is aimed at folks who know someone suffering from mental illness, whether they be a friend or family member. People suffering from depression or other issues are also encouraged to attend to meet with professionals and get resources to improve their lives. Other groups and individuals involved with

STEM camp is a hit with young girls and boys BY SERAINE PAGE SPAGE@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

Summer camp is a little bit different for kids from the Central Kitsap area. Central Kitsap students in grades five through seven had the opportunity to participate in a six-week STEM camp focused on using code, working on robotics and building and testing Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) “I really like it all,” said sixth-grader Kayleigh Byers. “But I like to do the engineering and build the ROVs.” Byers came with a neighbor friend to the camp, which alternates between all girls and all boys each week. The camp was created by two Central Kitsap High School graduates who just finished their first year of college. Kaitlyn Duarte is major-

ing in computer science at Whitman College and Larisa Brown is majoring in electrical engineering at Seattle University. Duarte wrote the grant for the camps that was received through the National Center for Women and Information Technology. The grant covered most of the three-week session for the female students, dropping the price for students to pay just a $25 fee for registration. The district used Department of Defense STEM grant to fund the boys’ portion of the camp. “The best part is seeing the light click on in their brains,” said Duarte. “When I went to school, there was nothing like this offered for us.” For a culminating project, students were broken down into teams to operate a robot through an obstacle course. The

robots picked up various items like bean bags and balls to bring back to the start of the course, each one scoring points for various maneuvers. Students also worked on testing ROVs in a pool for another final culmination project. “This program is not like high school,” said Duarte. “It’s a job for the kids. They’re coming into this like it’s a work environment.” High-school students and recent graduates also volunteered to help with the daily six-hour camp sessions Monday through Friday, One of the camp volunteers was Maggie Cordray, who just graduated from Central Kitsap High School this year. “It surprised me how fast they learn these things,” she said. “They’re very interested in it. They get frustrated sometimes,

Adamson is the computer and engineering technology instructor at Central Kitsap High School in Silverdale. He has served as a SkillsUSA advisor for over 15 years. Adamson came to education from the industry, so he knew immediately what his students needed to succeed after graduation. He has shared his expertise at all levels of SkillsUSA’s competitions and has helped develop other teachers and SkillsUSA advisors, too. Adamson’s students have won a state championship every year he’s been an advisor. He has also worked with local colleges to ensure that students completing his classes earn college credit. One local woman is looking to help in the repurposing of wedding dresses for a cause dear to her heart. Two months after her son, Malik, passed away, Cara Saba came across an organization called NICU Helping Hands that offers Angel Gowns to mothers impacted by a preterm birth. The gowns are created from wedding dresses to offer grieving parents comfort and clothing for final photos or burial services. “There’s such a need and people want to talk about this,” stated NICU Helping Hands Founder and Executive Director Lisa Grubbs. “There hasn’t been an opportunity until now. It’s a taboo subject most of the time. This gives people a way to discuss infant loss. There’s something hopeful about that start of life, about a wedding, and to me, it’s that full circle. Malik Saba’s shadow box sits atop wedding dresses his mother is collecting in memory of him for the creation of Angel Gowns like his. The gowns are for bereaved families who lose babies preterm.

Although Saba and her husband, Kyle, lost their son 18 weeks into her pregnancy in December, the couple decided they wanted an Angel Gown after hearing about the program in February. Saba requested the gown so she could place it into a shadow box in memory of her son. The white gown came wrapped in tissue with a poem attached by an angel pin. Saba placed it in a shadow box with black block letters spelling out her son’s name. “It’s so pretty,” Saba recalled thinking of the dress. “I loved it.” Now, Saba is collecting dresses from local women to send to the national organization. She’s received wedding dresses from Navy wives, friends and family stretching from Port Orchard to Bangor. One woman who just married in the last few weeks told Saba she’d be willing to part with her two wedding dresses for the cause. “I was actually surprised how many people wanted to give it up,” said Saba. “A lot of people are sentimental about it.” Once she has 10 dresses, she’ll package them up to be sent off to Texas. Saba has agreed to pay the shipping for the dresses. The gesture, she said, is a way for her to remember her son and for him to leave a mark on the world. “I kind of wanted him to have his own little legacy,” Saba said of her son. “No one acknowledges the fact that they were a human. I think everyone should have a stamp on the world and that could be his.” Saba is asking local women across the Kitsap

Peninsula to consider donating their dress to the cause. “There’s a lot of people that are giving me theirs,” she said. “It’s amazing to know that there are people out there who want to help and who will help my son make a name for himself.” Karissa Pena of Bangor chose to donate her wedding dress from her first marriage. As a mother who lost her child in 2007, she said that the organization is one that she feels is special and deserving of her wedding dress. “I’ll do it in honor of Malik,” said Pena. “I wanted to do it to help her. I think it’s a worthy cause.” While there have not been any requests from hospitals in Kitsap County, the foundation’s president said she welcomes any requests from parents or hospitals anytime. Grubbs said she’s been seeing shipments of donated wedding dresses from across the world and that many groups gather together to collect dresses for donation like Saba has been doing. “If a donor or seamstress requests that gowns be sent to a particular hospital, we will follow up with that hospital to see if they can and will utilize the garments for the families that they serve,” said Grubbs. “We would be honored to provide garments to any hospital in that area.” For those who are interested in donating a wedding dress, contact Cara Saba at caraoberloh@ me.com to get more information. ithin a year of landing in Kitsap, Honey Toad Studio began making viral waves with its hit 2012 web series “WRECKED.” Now, the independent studio is taking that momentum to the big screen. “We made ‘WRECKED,’ we had a web series and it was successful, but now we are doing something that is more ambitious,” said Nathaniel Buechler with Honey Toad Studio. “Anyone who watched ‘WRECKED’ can expect a step above,” he added. That ambitious “something”

is an indie film, made locally with regional talent. Honey Toad aims to truly embrace the independent credo, producing the project itself without the larger film industry’s influence, and with a $75,000 budget. “There’s very little, truly independent films being made,” said Executive Producer Liz Ellis. “There’s people making $2,000 movies on their phone, and then there’s studios making movies with a lesser budget than their big films, but really, there aren’t a lot of indie films being made.” The studio knows a thing See HONEY TOAD, Page 2

or two about the power of independent filming, and garnering financial support for it. “WRECKED” made its first season on a shoestring budget, then sought online support for the web series’ second season. A Kickstarter campaign brought in $32,012 for the season two project, overshooting its $30,000 goal. Despite its newcomer status, Honey Toad earned considerable nods from the film scene. Aside from rave reviews, the adult-oriented web comedy took in awards at the LA Web Fest, and the Indie Series Awards. In fact, it was the most nominated show at the 2014 Indie Series Awards. Honey Toad has secured partial funding for its current film project, which has already begun shooting in a Bainbridge Island studio, but it is still seeking investors. “It’s an exciting project and people can be involved,” Ellis said. But Ellis makes a note of being honest and upfront about the investment. Investing in such a project is more about supporting the local economy and the arts, rather than making huge returns, she said. Honey Toad has packages for investor circles, such as invitations to cast and crew events. “If your thing is that you like to support he arts, and people do, then this is for you,” Ellis said. Honey Toad aims to complete filming by September, and then con-

tinue with post production through to the end of the year. The movie will be sent through the film festival circuit, and will begin screening in 2015.

Force Play

The film itself is currently untitled, but is based off of a little-known play called “Force Play,” originally performed in Massachusetts on a Hampshire College stage. The story takes place in a slightly-altered reality. “There is this sort of corrupt, inefficient dictatorship in which the story takes place,” Ellis said. From there, multiple elements interact to create the plot of a comedic, sci-fi farce. “Colonel Theodore Pelk’s three children are kidnapped. He turns to the detectives of Woodsend Park Semi-Secret Police Station and Interrogation Center to get them back,” said Nathan Whitehouse, director of the film. “What is a totally obvious case quickly becomes complicated, however, as personal motives and secrets become entangled with the investigation.” An investigation into the incident could easily retrieve the colonel’s children, but also likely expose his extramarital affair. This causes the colonel to become more entrenched in the case than he normally would be, moving players around to protect his indiscretion. “It’s about him bumbling through the investigation,” Buechler said. “It’s a comedy of errors. The audience is always in the know.” But the story has a few

more elements and surprises than that. When discussing the film, it is clear that Honey Toad members are holding back — with a smirk — additional, intriguing aspects of the movie. “The script is all about these little details and throwaway lines which end up being relevant later, long after you’ve forgotten about them,” Whitehouse said. “It’s full of twists and turns, but the groundwork for every twist was carefully laid earlier in the plot.”

What would become Honey Toad’s indie film began at Hampshire College in 2012, where Whitehouse first encountered it. “A good friend of mine at Hampshire College named Mike Lion wrote the play, along with a friend of his at Yale named Ethan Wilcox,” Whitehouse said. Now directing the film, Whitehouse acted in the original run of “Force Play.” It only ran one weekend, but the story never left him. “Everyone who saw it really enjoyed it, and it was a piece that people would spontaneously bring up months after the show had closed,” he said. “Which, to me, was an important omen suggesting ‘hey, maybe this could go somewhere.’” After graduating, Whitehouse moved out to Bainbridge Island in 2013, where fellow Hampshire alumni were in the midst See HONEY TOAD, Page 3

Bremerton residents resurrect old pastime

Cruisers with hot rods to modern rides roll through downtown

remerton’s culture can bring forth a variety of nostalgia from military times to catching a show at the Admiral Theater. Recently, an almost forgotten pastime has reemerged onto the street, bringing back enthusiasm for automobiles and hanging out downtown. “Cruising down here was a big deal for several decades,” said Chuck Mitchell, who sparked recent interest in cruising the downtown stretch once again. “It started back in the ‘50s,” he said. “It was a big part of the identity of the

of producing “WRECKED.” He wanted to do something with “Force Play” with fresh West Coast audiences, and brought it to Honey Toad. “When I first brought up Force Play it was actually with the intention of trying to put the play up again somewhere out here,” he said. “I hosted a reading out here and, to my surprise, everyone suggested adapting it into a film.” With writers Lion and Wilcox’s blessing, Honey Toad embarked on a new, bigger project and Whitehouse began the work of converting a play into a film. “Building up this world, its technology, and its fashion, and all the little details that couldn’t appear in a zero-budget college play, has been one of the great joys of adapting this story for film,” Whitehouse said. “Much of this work was done by our costume designer, Aidan Vitti, and our production designer, Taylor Crockett. We’ve also had great help from Alex King and Kayla Rabe of Bainbridge Performing

“We held auditions and there were a few parts that we struggled with to nail down who it was going to be,” he added, noting that the cast for the film is, he feels, spectacular. “We found several people that are just amazing. They are fantastic. I think this is something that an audience can look forward to.”

A local project

So far, with six months of preparation and nearly a month into filming, the play is making the crossover to film well, according to the crew. “One of my hardest jobs is to not burst out laughing,” added codirector of photography Ben Ausmith. “They are bringing it to life in a way I never thought possible.” From renting filming locations, to pumping money into local businesses for film-related activities, to even stopping in at the Ale House on Winslow as crew are en route to the ferry, Honey Toad feels that beyond being an indie film, it is an injection of commerce into the local economy. “Every cent, other than for the actors, goes into the Bainbridge economy,” Ellis said. “And we’re hoping to screen the movie for Bainbridge audiences. It’s really a local project.” “We’re shooting the entire thing on Bainbridge Island,” she added. Then there are local sound technicians, cameramen, and so on. “People get in the spirit of it, and they go extra miles when it’s a community thing,” Ellis said.

So he started making phone calls to the city. He discovered that there is no such ordinance. “Nobody including the chief or the mayor had a problem with it,” he said. “And it slowly grew from that.” A Facebook page — Cruisin Bremerton Saturday Nights — was launched to get the word out. park and people visit downtown’s nightlife, patronizing bars, grills and any place they can further hang out. Mitchell notes that cruising is not necessarily about classic cars or hot rods. Those cars do show

no requirement for it. “You cruise in whatever you have,” he said. “Lately, I’ve seen more of VWs, imports, low riders and some of the newer Camaros. One guy had a tricked out Chrysler 300.” Ultimately, the happening isn’t entirely about the cars. It’s about socializing. “It’s a social thing. Cruising is not an organized event,” Mitchell said. “We didn’t need somebody showing us how to do it. You just show up in whatever you have, and you drive.”

When humans and ospreys collide up high Man-made structures conflict with the nesting habits of ospreys

oulsbo’s two osprey chicks are flapping their wings like athletes warming up for the big game. But for them the “big game” will be surviving on their own. In the meantime, dad dives for fish in a nearby pond behind the North Kitsap School District’s horticulture building, while mom guards the nest and chirps instructions to her busy mate. The pond provides a dependable source of fish, which make up 99 percent of the osprey diet. The pond’s proximity explains why this pair thinks it has found such a perfect spot for a nest. For several years they’ve nested on top of a light tower in Strawberry Field, a soccer field next to Poulsbo Middle School on Hostmark Street and Noll Road.

During the 19th and 20th centuries the main threats to osprey populations were egg collectors and hunters. But populations declined drastically in 1950s and 1960s because of pesticides, such as DDT. The toxic effect caused the eggs to be thin-shelled, easily broken or infertile. But ospreys, eagles and peregrine falcons have all made significant recoveries since DDT was banned in the early 1970s. Today their main threats come from eagles and man-made structures. Ospreys like to build

We’ve watched the graceful bird as he perches in the branches above the pond and scans for movements below the water’s surface. Uniquely adapted for the job, he fixes on the slowly swimming fish, briefly hovers, and then plunges into the water, emerging with a squirming meal in his talons. He eats the head so the chicks won’t choke on the sharp-edged bones, and then delivers the rest to the hungry chicks, while mom comments. It’s a family scene repeated several times each day as the chicks grow nearly as big as their parents. Ospreys are found

their nests on the highest point they can find near a ready source of fish. This gives them a commanding view so they won’t be ambushed by eagles. Although they are smaller than eagles, their agility gives them a tactical advantage in the air. This predilection makes cell towers irresistible. It has become a growing problem as cell towers multiply to meet the rising demand. But the nesting materials are flammable, and contact with electrical equipment is a hazard for both the birds and the cell tower owners. Prohibited by law to tamper with nests while they are in use; owners now wait until the birds have left for the winter and replace the nests with excluder devices to prevent the birds from rebuilding them. When the birds return in April, they’re forced to find new

homes. Many are now nesting on light towers — such as the one at Strawberry Field — creating another fire hazard, and safety and health problems such as falling debris and excrement. Public utilities have a long history of providing alternative platforms and other devices to keep raptors from electrocuting themselves and causing power disruptions. But it’s a new problem for cell tower owners and contractors, and they are struggling to find solutions. Evicting the birds solves one problem, but

creates often another. Many communities are rallying support for these very popular birds and erecting nesting platforms to accommodate them. The charismatic osprey is an icon and mascot for many athletic teams, including our own Seahawks football team. The Kitsap Audubon Society is exploring a relocation of the Poulsbo ospreys. Osprey expert Jim Kaiser has identified two suitable locations close to the Poulsbo pair for a new nesting platform. Kaiser is a retired wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He has assisted in more than 300 nest platform installations on the West Coast and offers a consulting service for those dealing with the problem.
