The Forks City Council will hold a public hearing on a proposed set of revisions to the city’s animal code, specifically Chapter 6.05 of the Forks Municipal Code, tag at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 11 in the Forks City Council Chambers at 500 E. Division St. The purpose of the public hearing is to take comments on the set of proposed changes brought originally forwarded by a small working group and then reviewed and modified by the city council. I would like to tell you how much I enjoy your paper. My brother, who moved to Forks not too many years ago, sends me a package full of them every so often. I must tell you how much I, as well as many others here, enjoy your articles. The humor, the adventure, hobbies and even the sports are such a joy in comparison to ours here in Wisconsin. When I was younger, I got as far as Port Angeles. I ever so enjoyed the scenery and the friendliness of the people. Although we were just passing through, it left lasting memories and your newspaper brings me back to those happy

memories. I want to know more. I want to learn about your customs, religion, food traditions, your holidays, the rain forest, mountains and wildlife. The one thing I would really like to see more of would be recipes from your side of the country. I love experimenting and cooking different types of dishes. Jeanette L. Zellar, 88, of Forks died July 18, 2014, at Forks Community Hospital. She was born April 20, 1926, in Rib Lake Wis., to Louis and Jennie (Sharp) Greene. She married Dean G. Zellar on Sept. 14, 1944. He died Dec. 4, 1987. She is survived by sons David Zellar of Forks and Ronald (Candy) Zellar of Montesano; daughters Gail (Micheal) Brandeberry of Waikoloa, Hawaii, and LaRene (Rick) Barlin of Olympia; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Bruce Zellar. The family will hold a private graveside service. Memorial contributions can be made to Forks Long Term Care, 530 Bogachiel Way, Forks, WA 98331.

Death Notice John Ten Harkel

John Henry Ten Harkel, 76, of Surprise Ariz., died Saturday, July 12, 2014. He was born to Henry E. and Esther E. (Liebenstein) Ten Harkel in Michigan City, Ind., on Feb. 21, 1938. The family subsequently moved to Phoenix, Ariz., when he was a child. He attended Arizona State University and the University of Utah, receiving his bachelor’s degree in meteorology at Utah. He worked 30 years for the National Weather Service in Phoenix before retiring in 1995. After retiring, he moved to one of the wettest places in the United States, Forks. He loved weather, travel, hiking and adventure. He was considered a reverse snowbird, spending rainy winters in Forks and the summer thunderstorm season at his cabin on Mount Graham. During his tenure in Phoenix he was passionate about adventure, extensively traveling off-road across the Southwest U.S. and hiking and backpacking with friends. Donations can be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation in his honor at www. parkinson.org. Funeral arrangements were handled by Wickenburg Funeral Home in Wickenburg, Ariz. A memorial will be held on Mount Graham near Safford, Ariz.

Mayor Monohon City Update

Mayor Bryon Monohon spoke to the West End Business group on July 16. He said that tourism is fine and has benefits but ultimately the success of any community is what it does for its own citizens After spending this past year teaching at Forks High School, Monohon said, “Kids in the past 10 years have changed a lot. They are incredibly caffeinated and dependent on smartphones. We need to find a common ground with them. Alcohol and recreational drug use is high. We can ignore it and pretend it will go away or we can reach out and attempt to deal with what is already becoming the new normal.” Regarding new employees at City Hall, he said that Ginger Simons and Holly Clark are settling into a daily routine at the front counter. In other city business he said the police department has hired a new officer and soon will be fully staffed. “Spartan Way is rebuilt and

looks good and the RAC construction continues,” Monohon added. A public hearing on new portions of the animal ordinance is scheduled for Aug. 11 that will include requirements for dog licenses and leashes. Also in early draft is a new piece of legislation regarding animal collecting which will regulate the number of a type animal any person can have at one time. The mayor also mentioned that City Hall has gone through considerable financial system upgrades which has kept staff very busy and will continue to do so in the future. Water bills have a different appearance now. There also are continued system upgrades coming to the city’s well houses for the community’s drinking water supply. He also mentioned that city council talk of instituting a business license seems to have cooled and is not being discussed at this time.

Changes at Beaver Post Office Things are changing at the Beaver Post Office. Long time Beaver Postmaster Maureen McGarrett has been moved to the Clallam Bay post office, due to the recent retirement of Linda Dillard. Stephanie Calhoun is now at the Beaver post office. In addition to staff changes, Calhoun said that the Beaver post office is slated to see a reduction in hours of operation, most likely going to a six-hour day. Calhoun added that she was not sure when that decision will come down saying, “It could come in an e-mail anytime.”

by Christy Rasmussen Ford A week after writing about the lady who suggested that I educate myself on the issues of Forks, it has become crystal clear that she was on to something. There are a lot of things that I do not know around here. For example, I don’t know why people wave to everyone they pass while driving in the woods. Back when I was a kid, my dad and I spent a lot of time driving on gravel roads in places such as the 4400. Do not confuse this area with the 4300, which looks exactly like the 4400 but has 100 fewer trees. That’s my new theory on areas which are referred to in numbers anyway. It’s the tree count I think. Whenever we passed another vehicle in the woods, my dad would wave by throwing up the 3-finger lift from the steering wheel. Though it wasn’t a normal wave, you technically got a wave from my dad when crossing paths with him in the woods. Each time he waved, I would ask him, “Who was that?” Each time, he would reply, “I don’t know.” Each time, I would then ask, “Why did you wave?” I’m sure it was really fun to have such an inquisitive child (translation; annoying kid who asked too many questions). Twenty years later, I found myself driving down the gravel road to my house. It’s out on the 8800 … I think I counted right anyway. I was with my own little inquisitive (see translation above) child.

Being much friendlier than my dad, I lifted four fingers from the steering wheel instead of his standard three. I hope the passer-byer noticed my friendliness. After I waved, I heard from the backseat, “Who was that?” I answered, “I don’t know.” Instantly I flashed back to my childhood. Therefore, it wasn’t a big surprise when MiniChristy asked, “Why’d you wave then?” I answer all questions that my daughter has with honest answers. When she asked why I waved at a stranger, I answered, “Because it’s the law.” OK, it wasn’t an honest answer, but it was a temporary end to the inquisitiveness. In reality, I don’t know the answer. Respect maybe? Maybe waving equivalent to saying, “Hey buddy! I respect that you are driving down this gravel road. As you can tell, I am doing the same thing right now!” I also have no idea why people wave by merely lifting their fingers off the steering wheel instead of giving a real wave. Lastly, I don’t know where the 9000 is … because I cannot count that high without losing my place. My reader was right. I don’t know anything … with the exception of how much fun it is to have an inquisitive child who asks questions that I cannot answer all day, every day. Dear Tim Rasmussen, this is my public apology for being such an inquisitive daughter and asking too many questions. Please lift the payback curse. Comments? Questions? Road work ahead It is summertime and that means roadwork time. With roadwork around Lake Crescent Westenders have found themselves grumbling and complaining about delays as they make their trips to Port Angeles. As I waited last Wednesday for a pilot car to take me around Lake Crescent, I thought about several things. One was, when stopped you can notice how much those trees on the hillside hang over the road and two, how good we have it with our modern roads. When compared to what earlier resident of this end of the county had to endure in order to get to the big city, it is now a piece of cake, even with the delays. The first piece of the puzzle that eventually would connect Forks with the rest of the world via roadways was with the completion of the Olympic Highway on the south side of Lake Crescent around 1922. Prior to completion of this road travelers booked passage on one of Puget Sound Mosquito fleet vessels. After disembarking near Pysht, a long road/trail awaited and once in Sappho you could go on to Forks. For a few years, from 19131922, ferries serviced travelers on Lake Crescent, the first, The Betty Earles, was used primarily to bring passengers to Michael Earles’ Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort. Later, after the resort burned down, several other passengeronly ferries serviced travelers. As automobiles became more popular, the ferry Marjory began ferrying cars; it held seven

autos and 50 passengers. The largest and last car ferry was Storm King. It held 21 autos and 150 passengers. Rates one-way were 75 cents for autos and 15 cents for passengers, kind of pricey for 1922. If you wished to travel south from Forks in the early 1900s it was even worse. There was a puncheon road and crossing of rivers almost certainly meant a ride in a canoe. So, it also was in 1922 that work began on a highway south. In the spring of that year crews began chunking out the right of way with steam donkeys. Steel and cement were hauled in for the Bogachiel and Hoh river bridges. Unstable wet ground and huge trees made for slow going. Finally in August 1931, the Olympic Loop was complete. On Aug. 26-27, a caravan of an estimated 6,000 cars left Port Angeles. Washington’s Gov. Hartley, British Columbia’s Premier Tolmie, Indian chiefs and pioneer settlers all took part. New bridges at Bear Creek and the Sol Duc had dedications and ribbon cutting ceremonies. Stopping in Forks at 11 a.m. the entourage enjoyed a “frontier dinner” provided by the Forks Chamber of Commerce. The caravan continued south and the Nolan Creek bridge was dedicated; they arrived at Kalaloch at 2 p.m. where a huge celebration continued through the next day with dancing, games and contests. Highway workers finally had encircled the farthest northwest

body of land in the United States with a $10 million highway project that looped the entire Olympic Peninsula. It skirted a great body of virgin timber lands and an entire mountain range. But, while it was called a highway, there was a lot of gravel and dust and it was quite a while before the road surface was blacktopped. The Olympic Loop in its final form represented years of work during which time sections of road were pushed through forest wilderness, across bogs and raging rivers and streams, which offered up some of the most difficult obstacles ever faced by western highway builders. As the Great Depression deepened, road construction projects expanded to provide “relief” to the unemployed. To cover the cost, the state issued its first road bonds in 1933. A reporter dramatically wrote in an article at the time “road boosters of half a century and pioneers with the joy of vanished isolation written on their weather-beaten faces joined in, lauding the new highway.” Also, it is a nice drive when there is no road construction.

Relay for Life a royal affair

Organizers of this year’s Relay for Life are ready to catapult in to 20-plus hours of fun and fundraising. Relay for Life 2014 will take place Aug. 1 starting at 3 p.m. and finish up Aug. 2 at noon at Forks High School, 261 S. Spartan Ave. The theme for this year is “A Knight with a Fight for a Cure … Curealot!” Activities and games will be knight-themed with castles, princesses, knights, catapults and dragons. There should be lots of fun and it’s all family friendly. A very special event at the start of the festivities will be the crowning of Relay Royalty during the opening ceremony. Survivors will be the royalty and 101-year-old cancer survivor Pearl Lucken has been selected to be queen. With fun and entertainment around the clock, Relay is shaping up to be a wonderful time with the celebration of survivorship and raising funds for the American Cancer Society.
