By JESSIE STENSLAND South Whidbey Record Two candidates who have the support of their respective parties are being challenged by party outsiders in the race for state representative, position 2 in the state’s 10th Legislative District. Dave Hayes, R-Camano, is running for a second term. He is facing three challengers in the primary election, including one candidate from his own party. Island County residents should have received their ballots in the mail. They must be returned by primary election day, which is Aug. 5. Oak Harbor resident Brien Lillquist, who admits to being unconventionally honest in his views, is running as a Republican. He previously sat on the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District board and ran unsuccessfully for the school board. His reason for running is straight to the point. “I don’t like any of the people down there,” he said. “My main concern is that nothing seems to change.” Mount Vernon resident Nick Petrish, a Democrat, earned the endorsement of the Island County Democratic Party. He has many of the conventional views of Democrats, but a unique background. He grew up hunting and fishing in Anacortes and was an interrogator in the U.S. Army before becoming a union electrician; the Second Amendment and labor rights are both important to him. “I’m all about guns, gun SEE PRIMARY, A9

Raider “signature” clear, but lack of evidence hampers arrest By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record Police are on the hunt for a commercial burglar on South Whidbey, and though they have a suspect in mind, the thief remains at large. Solid evidence: a fingerprint, video footage or any other clues have proved as elusive as the burglar, leading police to suspicions and theories but no arrests. “I think it’s probably one person,” said Island County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Laura Price. “We have a suspect in mind, someone we think might be attached to this. We just need the ‘smoking gun.’ ” Burglaries hit businesses from Clinton to Freeland hard in the past few weeks, and they all seem to be done in a similar way.

Owners of Cozy’s Roadhouse in Clinton and the Freeland Cafe said they found their restaurants broken into over the past couple of weeks. Each was reportedly done the same way: a snipped telephone connection to disarm the alarm, and forced entry. Lani Bryant opened the Freeland Cafe on July 13 and found the place amiss. The alarm was beeping and the front door was open. She saw desk items tossed on the floor and a staff locker pried open in the upstairs office. The cafe’s owners were vague on exactly what was taken, but estimated it to be far less than the cost of missing a busy business day on Sunday. For Bryant, whose sister is a co-owner of the cafe, the loss was more than dollars. She was insulted that the perpetrator was likely a customer

or patron. “Whoever wrecked this place, I’ve probably made them lunch or they’ve been in this establishment,” Bryant said. At Cozy’s in Clinton, the Cook family had to fix the century-old front door and repair the phone cable. Stephanie Cook said the burglary lasted less than 3 minutes because the phone cord was not connected to the alarm, so when the thief set foot on the floor, the alarm was triggered. A few years ago, the Cooks upgraded their security system after being burglarized and losing money, alcohol and pull tabs — paper gambling cards. Herman Walters dies Sunday eve of heart attack “A sudden and unexpected heart attack which struck Sunday evening at his home took the life of Herman C. “Butch” Walters, a Langley resident for the past 24 years and an employee of the town for the past 15 years. “Herman had planned to retire in August from his work for the town. He was the town superintendent for water, street and sanitary departments, in addition to serving as town marshal. He had undergone major surgery two years ago, but had recovered from that and appeared in at least fair health and continued to work until the day of his death.”

Lunch at Soup Kitchen in Langley The Soup Kitchen in Langley has served a lot of people over the past 12 years. The weekly free meal and free fellowship gathering recently served its 1,530th lunch. The crew marked the occasion by serving 170 hot dogs and hamburgers, donated by the Clinton Food Mart. The kitchen is community funded and can always use meat, vegetables or cash.

“Going full-bore all the way and helped by perfect racing water, Tom Adkins of Seattle Advance Outboard set a new course record Sunday in the 10th annual running of the Around-the-Island Outboard Marathon. “Adkins, with twin 100 horsepower Mercs pushing his boat at top speeds, whipped around the Island in one hour, 49 minutes and 42 seconds. The old course record was two hours, 27 minutes, set by the Frei brothers of South Whidbey in 1962. There were faster times before, but on courses that were not as long as that of ‘62 and ‘64.”

Two banks ask OK of Freeland office “Two Whidbey banks have made application within the past two weeks to establish a branch office at Freeland, it was learned this week. “The applicants are the Langley State Bank at Langley and the Whidbey Island Bank at Coupeville. “E.E. Noble, president of the Langley Bank, said this week that if their application is accepted, a branch office would be located in a new building to be constructed for that purpose on the site of the old Harbor Center Grocery.”

Commissioners clash over Whidbey Island-wide bike trail By JANIS REID South Whidbey Record A portion of a Freeland trail project was removed from the county’s Capital Improvement Plan on Monday, despite urging from South Whidbey Commissioner Helen Price Johnson. Island County commissioners voted 2-1 to remove phase II of the Freeland trail project at Monday’s regular session. Price Johnson said Monday she was “disappointed” that her fellow commissioners could not see the value of the piece of trail that would eventually contribute to an islandlong bike and walking trail. “There is a high priority for me to continue to create a path that goes from the ferry to the bridge,” said Price Johnson during discussion at this past Wednesday’s work session. “That’s not going to happen overnight, it’s going to happen in pieces and these are two really important pieces for my community.” Newly-appointed Commissioner Aubrey Vaughan cast the deciding vote to remove the project. Vaughan’s main concern about the project was the one-third-acre property adjacent to the trail owned by Island Transit, which remains undeveloped.

County public hearing on fish and wildlife continued to July 28 A public hearing on the county’s fish and wildlife habitat conservation plan has been continued to 6:15 p.m. Monday, July 28. Those who did not already have the opportunity to offer public input at the Monday, July 21 public hearing will have a second chance to do so. But they have not abandoned the project, Oakes said. Vaughan said that if a concrete plan for the transit station was presented, the commissioners could reconsider returning the Freeland trail project to the Capital Improvement Plan. “I like phase II but I want to know more about it,” said Vaughan, during Monday’s meeting. The project would cost more than $1 million in state transportation funds with Island County’s contribution at roughly $135,000. Commissioner Jill Johnson said that while she says “yes” to a lot of these types of projects, the cost of this project crosses the line. Johnson agreed with Vaughan that the trail project should come after the transit station is built. Johnson said she doesn’t share Price Johnson’s priority for an islandwide trail and knows people who talk about it “with an eye roll.” “I’m not huge fan of the milliondollar Freeland trail,” Johnson said Monday. “I don’t need a trail to nowhere. I’m not supportive of the concept. It’s only multimodal if transit connects to it. Transit can go first.” Price Johnson said that the trail has enough value to her community without the transit station.

“I don’t believe my colleagues understand the nature of that area,” Price Johnson said. “There is more than just the transit station it connects with it. Those communities would be using that trail both for pedestrian and for bicycles. I think it’s a false dilemma you’re proposing… folks in Freeland are very excited about having this opportunity.” The other project Price Johnson fought for was the feasibility study for a trail segment at Midvale Road and Highway 525. Vaughan, again casting the deciding vote, said that he was in favor of keeping the Midvale feasibility study in the Capital Improvement Plan. The purpose of the study is to determine if the two small parcels, which include some wetlands, could be of public use as a trail. The Gabelein family has filed a petition for the county to relinquish, or vacate, the property’s right of way to them if a use cannot be found. “That’s why the road vacation and that feasibility needs to be done,” Price Johnson said Wednesday. “We need to have that done to be able to answer that question at hearing about how feasible that property is.” Vaughan supported Price Johnson on the Midvale Road study with Johnson dissenting.

City proclaims festival day Let it be known throughout the realm that evermore, the fourth Saturday of July shall be Island Shakespeare Festival Day in Langley. The Langley City Council agreed to the proclamation, as read into the record by Mayor Fred McCarthy, at its July 21 meeting. As such, it is asked that people in Langley wear a bandana on July 26 in honor of the Wild West theme of “The Taming of the Shrew” produced by the Island Shakespeare Festival that opens this weekend. At last week’s work session, commissioners agreed the best course was to find a contractor to manage the Island County fairgrounds for one year. Monday’s vote to put some “placeholder” funding toward the fairgrounds was part of the larger discussion about the Capital Improvement Plan, which needed to move forward this week. That plan will now go to the Island County Planning Commission for discussion and public

comment. Fair supporters released the $71,000 Island County Fairgrounds Master Plan earlier this year which called for a demolition of about half the buildings. The unpopular $10 million proposal would have turned the facility into an island event center over a 10-year period. Commissioners, wanting to invest in a shortterm solutions, have directed staff to reach out to the Port of South Whidbey, the parks district and fair association to find out what it would take to put out a request for property management proposals.

‘Langley Lift’ elevator gets soft OK from city council By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record First the funicular, now the Langley Lift. Getting people from South Whidbey Harbor up to the city’s business hub is Langley’s next big project. The city seems to have a willing partner in Paul Schell, owner of the Inn at Langley, who is interested in having the elevator installed on his property. “We really need a partner for the project,” said Director of Community Planning Jeff Arango during the city council meeting Monday. “We don’t have a place to land.” “It serves a really important need,” he added. But various proposals have been discussed. Early on, Schell pitched an idea for a bridge-and-elevator mode of transportation from Cascade Avenue down to the waterfront, where he owns property that would get a city easement from the landing to the water. The city also proposed the much-talked-about and more eye-catching proposal of a funicular, a tram-style lift that cranked up the hillside’s slope on a track. City leaders appeared ready at the meeting to take a different tack on the mode of transportation for people from the waterfront up to the commercial core. A funicular, council members said, could put too much stress on the bluff, would cost too much and may not have enough space in the car, as compared to an elevator. Before the Port of South Whidbey, which recently completed a major expansion of the marina in Langley, can proceed to its next phase, the port and city need a parking plan. Despite early plans for a single elevator that took people from Cascade to an expansion of the Boatyard Inn, which is a partner in the project, Schell opted for separate elevators for customer comfort. The one in the expansion would only service the three-story building, not Cascade Avenue.

Golf course lawsuit is unfortunate, unneeded Last week was a bad one for the community surrounding Holmes Harbor Golf Course. The writing has been on the wall for months, and on Thursday conflict over the clubhouse and pro shop came to a head with sewer district commissioners deciding to sue property owners and landlords Kevin Hanchett and Mike Hooper over a parking dispute. That it has come to this is unfortunate, as much now hangs in the balance. If the golf course were to close, as some claim, homeowners will pay the ultimate price through lower home values and higher sewer rates. That they should suffer for those who can’t settle their differences amicably is a shame. Any pending court battle would focus on an easement for parking, but the legal argument is a dress for what appears to be a squabble turned personal. Saturday’s story detailing the escalating controversy was a soap opera of he saids/she saids, accusations and character jabs — not a tale of a disagreement needing resolution by a judge. First and foremost, Hanchett and Hooper should put aside past resentment concerning tenant problems, private clashes with sewer district commissioners or both, and reconsider leasing the now vacant pro shop for golf course activities. The clubhouse was clearly designed and made for one purpose — to be the centerpiece and start of the golf course. The restaurant space was meant to bolster the facility, not the other way around. Hanchett and Hooper are the rightful owners, yes, and it’s their right to do with the building what they please, but hamstringing an integral piece of operations over a personal beef is unnecessary and unfair to residents. If there is more to it than that, and this really is about money and making the most from an investment, then they should be clear about their intentions publicly, for the surrounding community has a vested interest in what happens at the golf course. For the sewer district’s part, commissioners are in a tricky spot. The fairways are an integral part of its wastewater treatment process, making their future very much the district’s business. It’s why the board bought the 18-hole course last year, but ever since commissioners have been desperately avoiding the sand trap of getting too involved in the management of a for-profit business. Authorizing a lawsuit over an operational matter, a service contracted out to avoid the very reasons mentioned above, is the not the way to keep your hands clean nor is it the best way to cement future good relations with Hanchett and Hooper. Like it or not, the district is in business with them and it’s incumbent upon the board to do whatever it can to foster a positive partnership. Both parties should take a breath, consider what’s at stake and then meet and hammer out their differences. This is a fight that can and should be settled over a round of golf — figuratively — and not in a courtroom.

Challenger’s letter was inaccurate, unfair Editor, I feel a recent letter to the editor by my opponent in the South Whidbey Record distorts the truth for personal political gain rather than telling the whole story. My opponent chose to pick a period in which there was a loss in the investment portfolio for Island County. While there was a fair market value loss, it was not for the amount she stated, which was exaggerated. Her statements were clearly a spin and not the whole truth. Investment values increase and decrease based on market conditions. It is the nature of investing. Knowledgeable investors are aware that when you purchase an investment, there are inherent risks involved, interest rate risk being but one. The whole truth is that all invest-

ments I make meet the guidelines of the Island County investment policy. This policy sets the parameters under which funds are to be invested. All investments were and are suitable for the portfolio and earn a marketable rate of interest. Ethel Simmons

Ethel Marie Simmons

Ethel Marie Simmons passed peacefully to her heavenly home on the evening of June 27 with all five children surrounding her bed at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett. Ethel was the first child born to Carsten and Viola Knaplund in Ketchikan, Alaska, on Aug. 7, 1935. Her parents and grandparents were fish buyers in Kelly’s Cove on Noyes Island. Her family moved to Whidbey Island in 1949, where they built and ran Knaplund Hardware in Clinton until 1974. She is preceded in death by her beloved parents; husband, Carl; and grandson, Timothy Roth. She is survived by brother John (Marlene) Knaplund and their sons, Tim, Jeff and Gregg and families; children, Don (Suzy) Simmons, Kathy (Peter) Roth, Kenon (Sherri) Simmons, Lynette (Chris) Gallagher and Loren (Jeni) Simmons; grandchildren,

Emily (Ryan) Brotherton, Ben (Anne) Simmons, Luke and Caleb Roth, Brandon, Carly and Taylor Simmons, Ashley (Travis) Van Overbeke, Katelyn Gallagher, Jacob, Samantha and Audrey Simmons; great-grandchildren, Evie and Ella Brotherton, Jonathan Roth, Katherine Simmons, Lillian and Stella Van Overbeke. At age 15, she met Carl Simmons, a cute boy with a car. She graduated from Langley High School in 1954, attended Everett Business College, and worked at Everett Trust and Savings Bank. She and Carl were married on April 17, 1955, at the Church of Christian Fellowship (became Langley C&MA) in Langley. She worked at National Bank of Commerce in Seattle before starting a family and moving back to the island. She raised five children and helped Carl run the family business, Simmons Glass. They were both very active in the Langley C&MA church. On retirement, she and Carl enjoyed traveling with overseas trips to the Philippines, Norway and Israel. They took the grandkids on Alaska cruises and trips to the East Coast. They also enjoyed many winters in Arizona with family and friends. Carl passed away in 2011 following a lengthy illness. Ethel stayed busy working in the church library, gathering with other widows and visiting her children and grandchildren. Special thanks to the

Open water Adventure Swim has limited spots By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record A tide change has hit the Whidbey Adventure Swim this year, its fourth as an open-water race. Run by the South Whidbey Island Masters, a group of swimmers dedicated to the open water, the race is based at Seawall Park in Langley. The course, completed in either four laps or eight — 1.2 miles or 2.4 miles — is new this year. It was designed to stay closer to shallow water, allowing racers to see the seafloor as they splash past one another in a triangle. “If somebody needs to stop, they can stand,” said race director Emily Weinheimer, adding that at its most shallow the water will be about 4 feet deep. Only 50 people can sign up for the swim. The participant limitation was necessary to keep the open water just that — open. Unless a swimmer signs a waiver saying they are capable of taking on the frigid water of Saratoga Passage with just skin, they are required to wear a wetsuit. safety and gun rights,” he said, adding that he’s in favor of gun safety classes in schools. Oak Harbor resident David Sponheim, on the other hand, is also running as a Democrat but has been spurned by the party. On its website, Island County Democratic Party warns against voting for Sponheim, stating that, “He is not actually a Democrat. Don’t be confused!” Sponheim has run for president as a member of America’s Third Party, a centrist political party he co-founded, but he said his views most closely align with Democrats when it comes to the two major parties. Yet he wrote, “The Democratic Party is completely out of step with the people of America” in a letter to the Whidbey News-Times. “I’m a fiscal conservative and a liberal on social issues,” he said. Sponheim and his partner, Sarah Hart, have an internet video chat program where they talk politics and introduce a variety of creative solutions for world problems, including “a seawater pipeline [that] will bring fresh water to the deserts and help solve problems of drought by implementing passive desalination,” and “a transcontinental mag-lev rail system;” Sponheim, however, raised some eyebrows for wearing blackface in a parody of Barack Obama on his program, though he said he’s not a racist and was just practicing his First Amendment rights. The four candidates have pretty diverse views on the issues, but they agree that funding education will likely be the biggest matter facing state lawmakers in the wake of the McCleary decision. The state Supreme

Court ruled that lawmakers aren’t meeting their constitutional responsibility by fully funding education, and ordered them to fix the problem by the 2017-18 school year. All four candidates agree that additional funding for schools should go directly to the classroom and not to state bureaucracy. Hayes, who is on the House Education Policy Committee, said he expects that McCleary will “absolutely overshadow everything else” during the next legislative session. Hayes said small reforms can help schools. He plans to work with local school districts to propose a way to streamline the audit process. He wants to prevent unfunded mandates from being passed on to school districts. He said he fully supports the House Republicans’ policy of funding education first, and doesn’t think a tax increase will be necessary. He would only consider one as a last resort, and only after all the other options have been explored and implemented. He said lawmakers should be able to find savings from

reforms and streamlining government. He said the exact number in the education shortfall is a moving target that needs to be settled once “basic education” is realistically defined. “People have been trying to grow the box of what is basic education,” he said.

“I don’t know if it would be enough, but it would be a start,” he said. Petrish said he would likely support a small sales tax increase to support education.

Lillquist said he has little faith in lawmakers to solve such a big problem. “My feeling is that the Legislature is going to wait until 2018 to do anything,” he said. Lillquist said the state simply doesn’t have the billions of extra dollars it would take to fully fund education. He said part of the problem is that small, pet projects “nibble away” at the budget; but even without those expenditures, the money just isn’t there. Lillquist said he wouldn’t be in favor of raising taxes to fund education, but he would make his voice heard in Olympia and in the district. “At least people would hear from me before the next election,” he said. Petrish is more optimistic about the McCleary issues and

He supports the legalization of recreational marijuana and believes it can be a goldmine for the state, but he believes progress in opening dispensaries has been too slow. He said the tax revenue could be appropriated to schools. Sponheim proposes that the state set up a scholarship fund that will be doled out to students based on test scores. He said he was a top student in high school, but later fell through the cracks. Scholarship funds could help other students like himself, he added. Sponheim feels that the nation still hasn’t recovered from the recession and he wouldn’t be in favor of raising taxes, even for education. He said lawmakers should be able to find other ways. “I want to get my feet wet,” he said, “get into local office and see what I can do.”

The hills will come alive with the sound of music during Whidbey Island Music Festival’s ninth annual summer concert series. The chamber music concerts, performed by members of the Benvenue Pianoforte Trio from Berkeley, Calif., and Pacific MusicWorks of Seattle, will run Aug. 1-10. This summer, the musicians will present six performances of four programs: Program One, featuring works of Beethoven and Haydn; Program Two, featuring Mozart; Program Three, “An American Tune;” and Program Four, “The Enchanted Isle: Music from England and Scotland.” New to this year’s festival is the inclusion of period instruments like the forte piano (an earlier version of the modern piano) and baroque harp, offering a taste of distinct historical and stylistic flavor. The addition of the program “An American Tune,” which features songs ranging from bluegrass and Civil War era folk songs to early American murder ballads, is also new this summer. Tekla Cunningham, founder and director of the Whidbey Island Music Festival, said she was inspired to bring the chamber music concerts to Whidbey after visiting her aunt over the Thanksgiving holiday nine years ago. Cunningham, who resides in Seattle, said she appreciates the naturally beautiful aesthetic of the island as well as the favorable acoustics of the festival’s two locations: the barn at Greenbank Farm and the hall in St. Augustine’s in-the-Woods Episcopal Church. Cunningham said the barn appealed to her initially because of a fond memory playing in an old barn as a high school musician, an experience she described as “very intimate but kind of rustic.” Brandon Vance, two-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion, who will be performing violin alongside Cunningham during “An

American Tune,” said this is his first time performing at the Whidbey Island Music Festival. His expertise lies primarily in Celtic music, but he has also performed bluegrass on several occasions. “I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to perform with good musicians… [and Whidbey is a] beautiful location,” he said. “We have a very creative program with versatile musicians.” “This is going to be a journey through American history with music,” he added, in regard to “An American Tune.’” “We’re basically telling the American story through music.” According to Vance, the storytelling will include Appalachian music sung by Catherine Webster and a variety of unique instruments like the Irish banjo [invented in New York] and baritone banjo, as well as a washboard used in the mid-to-late-19th-century by musicians who couldn’t afford traditional percussion instruments. For those who have not yet attended a chamber

music concert, but who are interested, Cunningham suggested that “An American Tune” may be an excellent choice. “I think this year we definitely have something for everyone,” she added. Maxine Eilander, Managing Director of Pacific MusicWorks, who is performing on the baroque harp in “Enchanted Isle,” and her husband Stephen Stubbs, founder of Pacific MusicWorks, who will be performing in both “Enchanted Isle” and “American Tune,” said they are looking forward to returning to Whidbey for the festival. “Enchanted Isle” is described as songs of the Scottish Highlands or the “Wild West of 17th century Europe.” Stubbs noted that, although each program is played by similar musicians, the performances will differ greatly. As for “American Tune,” he said it is the groups attempt to tackle a rarely attempted feat: reconstructing 19th century American music. He

added that with Catherine Webster, who is experienced in singing both classical and country styles, and the inclusion of banjos played by Tom Berghan, fiddles and guitars, it is a experiment in reviving a classical American repertoire. The performance, he said, will be authentically reflective of what a 19th century American band would have sounded like playing the original songs by “the father of American music,” Stephen Foster. “All of this has sort of one foot in classical music and one foot in folk music,” said Stubbs. Tickets cost $10 for students and $20 for general admission. In an effort to encourage children and families to attend, kids are free. a panic, smashing through the locked front doors and breaking off the top bolt,

part of the old door’s original structure. “It’s sad, we just had the doors refinished,” Cook said, holding the snapped off bolt segment in hand. Owners of both places declined to list exactly what was stolen or the value. At the cafe, the owners lost a change bag and decided to upgrade their security system. One of the locker units in the office was damaged, apparently by the thief prying it open. The loss was greater than the amount taken, said Freeland Cafe co-owner Petite HuntBryant. After having sheriff’s deputies inspect the restaurant and gather evidence, including searching for fingerprints, the day was half through and they decided to close the rest of the Sunday during Choochokam weekend. “Unfortunately we were down the whole day Sunday, which is one of our busiest days,” Hunt-Bryant said. “Every day of sales is important to us,” she added later. “We have 20 employ-

ees.” Stephanie Cook, who owns Cozy’s with her husband Troy, said they replaced the door and upgraded their window security. But by and large, she said their alarm system worked and scared off the would-be thief from ransacking the restaurant. She was alarmed, however, by the forethought someone put into the crime. “It’s not the normal crackhead that thinks, ‘Hey let’s get a drink at 3 a.m.,’ and that’s scary,” she said. The Eagles Aerie in Freeland suffered a pair of similar break-ins. The social club off Highway 525 lost cash and alcohol in addition to property damage. Its security was fully disabled, and the burglar made of with thousands of dollars and did a few thousand dollars in damage. The club was the subject of a break-in earlier this year in February, though the alleged thief was apprehended thanks to video surveillance. “They’re getting in fairly easily through very poorly

locked doors and windows, whether they’re kicking it in or using a flatbar to open the lock or the window isn’t secured,” said Island County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Laura Price, who is handling most of the commercial burglaries on South Whidbey. “Go around and look at your security. Cameras are invaluable.” All of the commercial burglaries are still under investigation by the Island County Sheriff’s Office. Price said her office has a suspect in mind but does not have enough evidence to make an arrest. Finding a reason for the break-ins was common for the owners and victims of larceny. They pointed to the economy, people without work and rising drug use on Whidbey. “Unfortunately, it’s desperate times,” Hunt-Bryant said. “In our whole 40 years here, we haven’t had a break-in like this.” Later, she added: “The island is a whole different animal now. We used to not lock our doors.” “The reality is we have a lot

of drug use, and it’s a problem,” she said. Price gave a similar reason for why someone is targeting restaurants and places with alcohol - that it feeds someone’s lifestyle. Several years ago, a rash of commercial theft occurred in the Freeland area. Sheriff Mark Brown recalled meeting with business owners to discuss the problem and what could be done. He said he wasn’t sure a similar meeting was necessary, citing an unfamiliarity with the current South Whidbey burglaries. But Price said she would contact the chambers of commerce to speak with business owners about how to identify security weaknesses and improvements. “We would be very happy to meet with business owners through the chambers to talk to them and explain to them what we’re seeing,” she said.

Eagles to hold 15th annual Seafest event The South Whidbey Eagles Aerie will hold its 15th annual Seafest, a fundraising event and membership drive, at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Whidbey Island Eagles in Freeland. On the menu are delicacies such as shrimp cocktails, barbecue oysters and salmon, mussels, clams, a full salad bar, garlic bread and a plethora of desserts. Entertainment will be provided by Consetti Barbershop Quartet, something which Joan Smith of the Eagles Aerie said will be a highlight this year. According to Smith, the event will provide ample opportunity for attendees of all ages to enjoy themselves, with plenty of space for kids to play and food for all.
