The Independence Day fireworks were little more than sparklers compared to the fiery battle brewing in the 31st District Senate race between Republicans Pam Roach and Cathy Dahlquist. Roach is seeking her seventh term in the state Senate and Dahlquist is a two-term member of the state House of Representatives, first elected in 2010. Reps. Chris Hurst and Dahlquist, Roach’s seat mates in the 31st, are working together to unseat the longtime senator. Both supported Roach in 2010. The primary is Aug. 5. Ballots have been mailed throughout the district and must be postmarked by election day. Lynda Messner is also on the ballot, identified as a Democrat, but there has been controversy whether she truly is a Democrat or was placed in the field to help Roach. Hurst and Dahlquist have stated she is a “fake” Democrat. Roach said she had not met Messner prior to a recent encounter at The Seattle Times and thought she was “a nice lady.” Both sides have accused the other

of attempting to keep some people off the ballot and get others on – a tactic known as ballot configuring. Hurst is being challenged for his seat by Republican Phil Fortunato.

Expenses

The campaign between Roach and Dahlquist was hostile from the starting gate, but the tone changed dramatically July 10 when Chad Minnick, a Dahlquist consultant, released Roach’s expense documents, which he received following a public records request. Hurst sent the documents with a press release to numerous media outlets, alleging Roach is using state taxpayer money to fund her campaign. Minnick is a political consultant who worked with Roach in 2010. Roach said, “His job is to tear me down.” Minnick was contacted concerning the records and he replied in an email, “As you can see from the email chain below that I was the one who requested the information. That is standard practice in any campaign... made (sic) simple information requests to get more information on your opponent. I forwarded the

Interview

During a nearly three-hour interview Friday, Roach said the post office box in question is for personal use. “The post office box is my box,” she said. “It is not the state’s box.” The senator said she receives personal, legislative and campaign mail, including checks, at P.O. Box 682. “It isn’t a state mail box but I’m charging them a little rent because they put mail in there,” Roach said. “I am allowing the state to send mail to me. Sometimes the state gets to pay me rent because I’m letting their mail go there. That’s how

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life started Friday night at Bonney Lake High School and ran until Saturday afternoon. This year 31 teams participated in the overnight event. A total of 231 registered participants helped support the fight against cancer and among those were 41 cancer survivors. At the press deadline, more than $42,000 has been raised for Bonney Lake’s relay. Bonney Lake’s Event Chairperson Christy Minzey said money can still be raised and turned in until August 31. “A special thanks goes out to all the committee, our sponsors, participants, the community, the city and the Sumner school district!,” Minzey wrote in an email. “With the help of everyone involved this event was a huge success.”

Box 682, both for the rental and daily mileage from her home to the mail box. The post office address is listed on all her campaign ads published by The Courier-Herald from the 2010 campaign to her current 2014 campaign. The expense reports also list payments for a cell phone, 253-797-2424, that Hurst alleges is used for her campaign. A campaign ad from 2010 for the C4L lobbying barbecue appears to be the only instance of Roach using the 253-797-2424 number. Minnick said she called him during the 2010 campaign on the 2424 number. In the ads published by The Courier-Herald from 2010 to the present, Roach used her home number in all. According to Roach she used 206-

He also refused to speak with the officers and exit the vehicle when they asked. The passenger was eventually helped out of the vehicle and while running a records check found that he had a felony warrant for escaping through the department of corrections. The passenger was cited with obstruction and failure to wear a seat belt. He was released due to the lack of jail space. An officer responded to the report of a residential burglary with an engagement ring and iPad missing. The reporting party stated she came home to find her front door kicked open and those items missnext 30 years. In 1980 he opened a business, Puget Sound Electronics. He retired from Boeing as an acoustical engineer and with his wife moved to Chehalis. Survivors include son Donald and wife Debbie of Enumclaw; daughters Terri Williams and husband Gary of Ravensdale, Karen Howard and hus-

ing. She was asked to fill out an inventory sheet of all the items missing. After walking through the house, the officer noticed it was odd that two laptops were not taken as well. The reporting party and her fiancé did not know of any possible suspects. At the time of the report, there were no leads in the case.

July 10 Driving with License Suspended: While on a

routine patrol, an officer conducted a random records check of a vehicle traveling on SR 410. The check revealed the registered driver had a suspended license and two misdemeanor warrants band Kurt of Tukwila, Cheryl Anderson and husband Bill of Bonney Lake and Lori Harvey and husband Curt of Tacoma; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Diana and sisters Margaret Burnside and Marylou Luoma. A funeral service

The officer observed the driver of the vehicle was now a male and he was the only one in the car. Due to the lack of jail space, she was cited for driving with a suspended license and no proof of insurance. She was released from custody. All you have to do is look at my poor car and look at the mileage on it.” Roach said multiple times during Friday’s interview her expense reports are not her responsibility; rather, it’s Secretary of the Senate Hunter Goodman and the staff reimbursing her for the expenses. “If there had been a problem they would have said something to me,” Roach said. “(These) policies have long been established. Everything is properly done. The responsibility for this goes to the person writing the check.” Roach also said she does not enter the expense items but that her legislative aide does. “I never see the report.” Roach said. “I didn’t used to be that way. Before everything was electronic I

Roach was questioned about an entry from Feb. 26 for two entries to a sportsman event. One listed as Sportsman’s Event Salem, 322 miles, $180.32, and the other as Sportsmen’s Caucus, 327 miles, for $183.12. She added if there was a problem a staff member working for Goodman would have called. “That didn’t occur. I was doing state business and there you go,” Roach said. She called her aide and asked her to check the entry. The next day the aide sent an email stating she made a clerical error and wrote to Goodman, “I owe the Senate $183.12 for the duplicate trip.” She added Roach does not review the reimbursement request. Roach was asked through email how mileage is calculated and reported to her aide. She wrote she did not know but believes Google is used, “figuring in the side trips if it is not a straight shot.” Dahlquist said she uses MapQuest and a legisla-

tive assistant enters the data, “Then I approve it. She could submit it without me seeing it, but I want to see it.” District Office Roach raised the issue that Hurst and Dahlquist rent their district office from Sound Publishing, owner of The CourierHerald. Roach said the two representatives “have a financial arrangement with the newspaper. I think that reeks.” Dahlquist and Hurst each pay $235 for their offices and the campaign office is $185, which the two share. Cell Phone In terms of the cell phone allegation, Roach said, “We all know we have to be very careful and I certainly am,” Roach said. “And so the point here is you can try to make sure everyone knows. It’s never going to be foolproof, which is why the senate allows something

called de minimis use – not a major thing. I try the best I can.” Neither Hurst nor Dahlquist have a legislative cell phone. Dahlquist said she uses her phone for legislative, personal and campaign issues and it would be a violation to charge the state. Hurst said it is too difficult to separate cell phones. “It isn’t worth it,” Hurst said. “If I make one mistake I’m in violation of the law.” Senate Oversight An email sent to Goodman concerning the responsibility of members’ expense reports was answered by Buchholz Monday because Goodman was out. “The Senate operates on an honor system,” Buchholz wrote. “We receive members’ statements for reimbursements and review them for basic compliance with policy.” Both Hurst and Dahlquist said all expense reports are

Flinging Accusations Multiple accusations from each campaign have been leveled. When Roach was initially called about the expense report allegations she said the “real story” was Hurst. Roach brought up an issue between John Torres and Hurst that she felt was the most important issue. “I think the story should be that a member of the State House of Representatives repeatedly called someone and urged them not to run,” Roach said. Torres filed a police report alleging extortion and harassment, naming Hurst. An Auburn police report appeared to uphold Hurst’s side of the story and charges

were not filed. Hurst said Roach’s approach with the Torres’ allegation is to use character assassination. “Pam will attack and try to destroy anyone,” Hurst said. “People will know the truth about Pam. I’m not afraid of her. Voters need to know who she really is.” Roach countered, saying, “He is using the character assassination, as is usually the case in an election year. In the last 12 years there has not been one of my opponents has ever brought up a vote I’ve taken. It’s all about coming after me.” She said she works hard and is a leader. “I think the things I have been doing is good stuff,” Roach said. “I am doing my job.” Dahlquist said she decided to challenge Roach, “Because I saw what she actually does in Olympia. I thought it was the right thing to do to give all the people a voice back in Olympia.”

The old Economics 101 model was, “Technological progress will lift all boats equally, making all workers more productive and hence more valuable.” The new economic model is one where, “Superstar-based technical change is upending the global economy.” I have a digital scanner on my copy machine, which is able to duplicate data that can be sent at virtually zero cost in seconds to almost anywhere in the world via email. Pam Roach’s ad in last week’s paper and on the flyer board states that she is rated “No. 1 most effective legislator in Olympia, Washington Post 6-13-14.” This is not true. The Washington Post does not endorse candidates for state Senate races outside the Washington, D.C., area. This so called “rating” is a fantasy apparently created to mislead District 31 voters. We need honest state senators who will work together to solve issues. Dahlquist has traits of an effective legislator I experienced the inner workings

of Washington State’s Legislature as a Republican intern in 2012. I got to see more than just the sandstone and marble walls, but also had the opportunity to get to know the men and women behind the suits that represent you. What I learned more than anything is to disregard the resumes; personalities are what make a good politician. Positive energy, proactive efforts, and above all, an absolute selfless commitment to the people of their district are all traits of a good legislator. Cathy Dahlquist embodies all of these traits. I saw her day in and day out exemplify the integrity, humility and honesty that all politicians should maintain. Her willingness to put partisanship aside and work across the aisle in order to benefit the district is exemplified by her effective legislative relationship with Chris Hurst. I admire her for her dedication to the district. Pam Roach on the other hand, subjects others to her priorities and forces others to function for her out of fear. She threatens, she intimidates, she frustrates those who need her to cooperate in order to benefit not only her district, but the entire state. She is the kind of person at the legislature that

you make way for as you walk past her and look over your shoulder just to make sure she doesn’t double back. It is all about Pam’s personal agenda regardless of whether it’s good for the people or not. Pam’s been kicked out of her caucus, she’s missed votes on the floor because she was gone on an unauthorized trip to Azerbaijan lacking any relevance or benefit to Washington state during legislative session. However; in an election year, what should offend voters the most is that she’s recruited a fake Democrat in an attempt to draw votes away from Republican Dahlquist because polls show that in a head-to-head, Roach suffers a loss to Dahlquist. This campaign has so far shown how eccentric and increasingly desperate she has become, all telltale signs of the waning period of a tyrant’s rule. Throughout history some of the most powerful and abusive politicians began their careers honestly. But all bad representatives of the people seem to lose their seat at some point because those whom they represent choose to stand up against them. I hope the voters make that stand. Maybe 20 years

Messing with any drug is risky So, before concluding my befuddled discussion about addiction and states of consciousness, I want to pay some attention to the actual drugs. They’re usually divided into three classifications: narcotics, stimulants and psychedelics. The narcotics include morphine, heroin, codeine, oxycontin, opium, alcohol, barbiturates and any number of sleeping pills (whatever chemical cocktails they might contain). The stimulants are cocaine, crack, caffeine, amphetamine, methamphetamine, Benzedrine, nicotine, Dexedrine and a number of other diet pills. The psychedelics include pot, LSD, mescaline, “magic” mushrooms, Ecstasy and any new concoction they might have been developed in the last few days. The narcotics are all depressants; that is, they depress the central nervous system. Whatever euphoric effect they produce, in the long run they simply knock you out or, at the extreme, kill you. Heroin is the most powerful and, since it’s a street drug –you can’t buy it in a

pharmacy, though Oxycontin has a similar effect – there’s little “quality control,” which makes using it a dangerous proposition. You never know what you’re getting. Compared to heroin, alcohol is a very mild narcotic, but if you consume a large amount in a bingedrinking frenzy, it can stop your heart, just like smack. If you use a large amount of any narcotic over a long period of time, the physiological consequences can be substantial; i.e., kidney failure, liver damage, mental deterioration, etc. However, if you use them responsibly, they apparently do little physical harm. There are physicians who’ve used morphine every few months for 40 years and never

suffered any ill effects. Similarly, many people use alcohol in moderation for their entire lives and have no serious physical problems. Of course, the stimulants are just the reverse of narcotics; that is, they don’t depress the central nervous system, they perk it up. Speed, in all its manifestations, gives you a jolt, a shot of energy. If you want to study all night for a final exam, pop a couple hits of Ritalin or No-Doze. If you want to stay up for 24 hours, try something a bit stronger. However, unlike the narcotics, if you’re using a powerful speed on a daily basis for even a few months, it can have devastating consequences on your body. Based upon personal experience and observation, methamphetamine is a terribly ravaging drug, the worst I’ve ever seen. And finally, there are the psychedelics. Psychedelics are neither depressants nor stimulants though, since they’re often manufactured in basements and broom closets,

(One benefit resulting from legal grass in licensed stores is that you can be sure the product isn’t mixed with speed or any other “contaminant.”) Psychedelics are the most subtle drugs and the “trip” they produce is greatly inf luenced by what the user brings to the experience. If you’re looking for a giddy, drunken state that’s what you’ll get. If you’re seeking more “spiritual” dimensions, that’s also possible.

In conclusion, I want to point out that messing around with any of these chemicals can be a risky proposition. Drugs are dangerous commodities, especially if you’re prone to addiction. They’re definitely something kids shouldn’t fool with. (If I have to draw an arbitrary age limit, I’d say no one under 21.) If you’re 13 or 14 years old and you’re playing around with any of these chemicals – even weed or booze – you better think twice before you flush your whole life down the drain. Trust me on this. I know the subject well.

The increasing use of automation and robotics, 3-D printing and artificial intelligence will mean the least skilled in this country and in developing nations will be the most deeply affected and harmed by these changes. The last three words of Apple’s eight-word business plan are being transformed in front of us. Cheap labor being performed in China, Southeast Asia and Latin America is being “reshored” to America, but with machines doing the work, not humans. The “Foreign Affairs” article uses the example of Instagram, a photo sharing application. Fourteen people created the company without needing many unskilled workers or even much money. The idea went viral. After a year and a half, the company sold for $750 million! Ironically, Kodak, a photo company that at its height employed 145,000 and had billions in assets, went bankrupt near the same time. A few superstars make millions, while the masses salaries stagnate and/or their jobs disappear. This is true in sports and music, as well as on the Internet. As time passes, more of the economy is being transformed by the developing technology: retail, manufacturing, finance and marketing. “And sure enough, the United States today features one of the world’s highest levels of real GDP per capita – even as its median income has essentially stagnated for two decades,” the article states. This brings up a troubling question: Who will be able

to afford to buy these newly developed products if jobs disappear and incomes continue to stagnate? These changes are likely to be permanent and pervasive. Trying to prepare for these changes for both our children and ourselves is challenging for the best of us. Those who have fewer opportunities and resources, both financially and educationally, will be hurt the most. Schools will need to change as competition from more cheaply paid graduates in other parts of the world make it even more difficult to find jobs in the U.S. Highquality education, health care and retirement security must be addressed to avoid increasing the gap between the haves and have-nots. To ignore this issue is to invite political and economic unrest. According to the authors, the strategy to combat these enormous technological shifts is “intellectually simple, but politically difficult”: increase basic research in health, science and technology, in education and fix our decaying infrastructure; roads, sanitation, energy and communications. These would give this nation longterm economic growth to make the necessary adjustments. Perhaps the McCleary decision requiring full funding of K-12 education will help Washington state keep up with these trends, if only the Legislature will comply. The first step in this process is to understand the rapid changes taking place in front of us that are often too close to see clearly. Not facing reality will see a continuation of the increasing gap between those who are doing well in our society and those who are left behind. To do nothing is to invite more of the same.

You showed a really interesting plant with long strands of red flowers and it had a very unusual name that I have somehow forgotten. Do you know what plant I am asking about? L.M., Enumclaw First, thanks for watching the show. That plant was the romantically inspired “Love Lies Bleeding” because those unusual flower clusters drip down from the center of the plant. It is also called the “chenille plant” because of the fuzzy texture and “summer poinsettia” due to the deep red color. Some plants have many different common names so this is why you should look for the seeds by using the Latin name Amaranthus. Follow the instructions on the seed pack and you’ll be able to grow this ancient, edible plant in your own garden with little problem. I know I am supposed to deadhead or remove the faded blooms from my hanging basket but what about the tiny flowers from plants like lobelia? Do I really have to cut off all those spent flowers? J.P., Buckley No worries, most plants with small blooms will be self-cleaning and the faded petals will fall on their own. Fuchsias are an example of a plant that will produce more blooms if you remove the flower and the fat green seed pot just behind the bloom. If you leave these pods on the plant they will darken as they begin to ripen the

seed inside and this saps the energy of the plant so flower production slows down. Fuchsias prefer a balanced plant food with the numbers 20-20-20 on the label to keep pumping out maximum flowers. Is it true that you should never fertilize a plant with dry soil? I am supposed to water the plants for my neighbors while they are on vacation. W.H., Enumclaw Dr in k before food is the general rule of green thumb because a plant suffering from drought and looking a bit wilted can suck in the fertilizer water so fast the tips of the leaves can turn brown or burn. To really pamper your potted plants give them just a tiny pinch of plant food mixed into a watering can every time you water. The easy way to keep nutrient levels constant for potted plants is to use a slowrelease plant food.
