Over a century old, the festival is better than ever There’s something for everyone at the Strawberry Festival By SUE STINSON For The Beachcomber
Welcome to the 105th annual Vashon Island Strawberry Festival. The Strawberry Festival has always been a part of my life. As a child, I walked in the kiddie parade and enjoyed carnival rides. As a teen, I danced to the Doily Brothers at the Saturday night Street Dance. And as a parent I watched my own children enjoying those same things. Now the Strawberry Festival is an entirely different part of my life. As Event Manager at the Vashon Chamber of Commerce, I work with the Executive Director, Jim Marsh, the chamber

board of directors and several other passionate island planners to coordinate this annual event. I am proud of the way people come together to make this festival happen. We invite you to explore the stages, the art, the food and the local businesses. The festival is Vashon’s largest event and it benefits many. The Strawberry Festival is co-
ordinated by the chamber of commerce and is a fundraiser for us as well as over 25 other island charities and nonprofits. Last year more than $80,000 was raised by island nonprofits during festival weekend alone! The festival also supports commerce, local artists sell a lot of art, musicians who play the seven stages gain exposure, restaurants are busy, and local businesses get a chance to showcase themselves to more than 40,000 people in one weekend. Additionally, families and friends come together, reunions happen, and visitors get the chance to experience our island. We work hard on the mix of vendor booths so that the festival is interesting and exciting. A majority of booths go to local businesses, organizations and artists, but we also have
a loyal following of off-island vendors who love Vashon and consider our festival one of their favorites. They support Vashon because they feel a part of this community. This speaks highly of the people at the festival and the kind of community we are and strive to be. While many towns are cancelling their fairs and festivals due to cost-cutting measures, disinterest or lack of volunteers, it is wonderful to know that our celebration of summer, music, art and community is still growing and vibrant at 105 years! A homegrown parade kicks off the weekend Vashon’s true colors come out in the Grand Parade Like island residents, the Strawberry Festival’s Grand Parade is colorful, fun, artistic and quirky. There are floats, bands, lots of costumes and
even some animals. This year’s Grand Parade will feature some perennial favorites, such as the Thriftway Shopping Cart Drill Team, antique tractors, Vashon’s own ukulele band and more. You can also expect a few surprises from creative islanders.

The parade starts at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Children’s Parade and is immediately followed by the Grand Parade. The Grand Parade starts south of town and marches north up Vashon Highway through the heart of the festival grounds. There’s not a bad seat on the route, but performances take place in front of Zombiez, in front of Pandora’s Box, at the intersection of the highway and Bank Road and in front of the Grand Marshal Stage, on the north end of the route, where Voice of Vashon will broadcast. At the end of the parade, the antique tractors, floats and other vehicles will park along

Fun for little ones The Strawberry Festival brings out the kid in all of us. But for those who are genuinely children, here are a few highlights. The carnival will be located at the north end of festival, across the street from the library, and will open at 6 p.m. Thursday. It will also be open from 3 to 10 p.m. Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The carnival may be smaller this year, as it is in a new location. On Thursday only, bring four cans of food for the food bank and get 25 tickets for $20, a $5 savings. A highlight for kids from last year’s festival is returning. Once again kids of all ages
A homestyle dinner and music The Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association (VMIHA)will put on the third annual Miss Lucy Dinner, a buffet-style dinner that has quickly become a festival favorite. The dinner is named for Melissa Lucy James, who became Strawberry Festival Queen in 1923 at the age of 104. The dinner, a fundraiser for VMIHA, will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday on the museum lawn, and there will be live music. Tickets are $25, or $10 for kids 10 and under, and are available at the Vashon Bookshop and the museum. The museum will also be open 1 to 4 p.m. each day of the festival.

Vashon Highway is a colorful, fun and busy place all weekend. There will be more than 160 booths this year selling clothing, art, household goods, jewelry and more. Vashon businesses and nonprofits will also be on hand to meet visitors, raise funds and add to the fun. Organizers say many favorite booths are returning this year, but they’ve invited some new and unique exhibitors as well. Look for the “Homegrown Vendor” signs on booths, which mark Vashon products and organizations. Many of the booths at this year’s festival are Vashon-based. In addition, more than 20 food booths will offer a variety of dining and snacking choices. Look for the VIGA booth selling Vashon-grown strawberries as well as the treats from island businesses, such as Anu Rana’s Healthy Snacks, Snapdragon and Midlife Crisis Farms.

The Burby puts the ‘fun’ in fun run
Firefighters will compete in the Firefighter Challenge.
See firefighters in action Watch the men and women from Vashon Island Fire & Rescue show what they’re made of in the Firefighter Challenge. They’ll race against the clock, donning gear, grabbing hoses, climbing ladders and quelling an imaginary fire, all in the middle of town. The Firefighter Challenge takes place at 2 p.m. Saturday in front of the Vashon Pharmacy. But watch out — spectators have been known to get wet.
Get out your running shoes for the Bill Burby Inspirational Fun Run. Now in its 34th year, the run will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. by the VYFS PlaySpace. The event, named after a beloved Vashon coach who died in 1989, has become a festival tradition and includes a 10K race, 5K race and 5K walk. Proceeds support high school sports teams and an annual scholarship. Again this year, participants can choose to “Run for Ryan” and donate to the Ryan Krug Memorial Scholarship Fund. Sportsmen’s Club continues the pancake breakfast Start your day at the festival with a hearty pancake breakfast for a good cause. The Kiwanis club, which held the breakfast for years, recently disbanded, but this year the Sportsmen’s Club is taking the event on with enthusiasm. Volunteers will serve pancakes, strawberries, sausage and beverages. The meal is $8, or $5 for children under 10. Discounted tickets, $7 and $4, can be pre-purchased at Barber & Beauty Shoppe, Vashon Bookshop and James Hair Design. The breakfast takes place from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to noon Sunday in the IGA parking lot. Proceeds benefit the Sportsmen’s Club’s charitable activities.

The annual Classic Car Parade takes place at noon on Sunday.
Car Parade: Hot rods and classics will roar through town The Tom Stewart Memorial Classic Car Parade, which takes place at noon on Sunday, features vintage and unique cars from around the region. There are the classics you know and love as well as newfangled and one-of-a-kind rides. Afterward, the cars line up for viewing in town. In a new route this year, cars will drive north on Vashon Highway from Sawbones and turn west onto 178th Street by the Vashon Theatre. From there, they will head north on 100th Avenue, past The Little House to Bank Road. They will turn east onto Bank and loop back onto the highway, where they will park for viewing. The best place to view the car parade is near the intersection of Bank Road and Vashon Highway, as Voice of Vashon will be announcing the parade at this location. 178th and 100th will provide good viewing as well. The parade is a memorial to the late Tom Stewart, a generous businessman and owner of Misty Isle Farms. Car owners and participants bring a jar of strawberry jam to donate to the food bank.

A good time for adults, too Ober Park will fill with art Vashon is an island of artists, and the festival is a great place to meet them and purchase unique works. Vashon artists will sell their wares in Ober Park this year. There you’ll find woodwork, photography, mosaics, pottery, tile work, blown glass, textile art and more. The La Biondo Pizza truck will sell hand-crafted pizza as well.

Brews and tunes at the festival Beer Garden Live music and local suds make the Beer Garden a hopping scene for adults. This year Beer Garden organizers are featuring a variety of brews from western Washington microbreweries. VIP bracelets good for the weekend are available; Vashon’s own Cliff’s Beer has brewed a special batch just for the festival, and there will also be a selection of Vashon and Washington wines.
The beer garden opens at 5 p.m. Friday at the north end of the festival, across from the library, and music kicks off at 7 p.m. when Loose Change takes to the stage. The garden opens at noon Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday, with music starting shortly thereafter. Music lasts until midnight on Saturday and until 5 p.m. Sunday. For a full music schedule, see page 12.
The Heritage Museum Stage, on the lawn behind the museum, is the place for local sounds and local tastes. With an all-ages area, families can take a break from the festival crowds and listen to local music. The stage features music from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday (for a full schedule, see page 12). The over-21 area features locally produced drinks. Cider from Dragon’s Head, wine from Vashon Winery, Cliff’s Beer and a special cocktail from Vashon’s own Seattle Distilling Company will all be available, as well as food from Rachael’s at Sound Food. There is a $5 cover charge, but no cover for anyone under 21 when accompanied by an adult. The cover fee also gets adults into the Beer Garden on Saturday. The Heritage Museum is also the location of the popular Miss Lucy Dinner on Friday (see page 5) and a great place to learn about the island. It will be open to visitors from 1 to 4 p.m. each day of the festival.

Getting around at the Strawberry Festival Shuttle service Organizers recommend parking away from the festival and taking advantage of the shuttle buses. A shuttle bus will serve the north-end ferry terminal from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, dropping riders off at Ober Park. Shuttles will wait for incoming boats at the end of the dock. The last shuttle leaving Ober Park back to the ferry dock will be at 7:30 p.m. both days. A shuttle from the south-end ferry will also bring people to the festivities. Shuttles will meet arriving ferries and drop visitors at the Vashon Senior Center. The last shuttle leaving the Vashon Senior Center for the south-end ferry dock will be at 7:30 p.m. A shuttle bus will also run from Agren Park to the Vashon Senior Center on Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to approximately 6:30 p.m. The last shuttle back to Agren Park will be at 7 p.m. For all shuttles, the cost is $1 each way per person. Children under 5 are free. Please bring exact change.
Road closures Part of Vashon Highway and many streets around Vashon town close during the Strawberry Festival. Traffic is routed onto Cove Road, 107th Avenue, Bank Road, 103rd Avenue, 100th
Avenue and 178th Street. Most streets are open in both directions, but 100th is for northbound traffic only while 103rd is for southbound traffic. For a map of closures, see www. vashonchamber.com. Festival thorougfare: Vashon Highway will be closed from Cove Road to Bank Road at 5 p.m. Friday and will stay closed until 8 p.m. Sunday. Street dance closures: At 7 p.m. Vashon Highway closes from Bank Road to 178th and stays closed until 8 p.m. Sunday. Bank Road Closures: Bank Road will close between 97th and 100th at 7 p.m. Friday and will stay closed through the festival. Grand Parade Closures: In preparation for the Grand Parade, Vashon Highway will close at 9 a.m. Saturday from 178th to 192nd (at Mom’s Deli) until the parade ends at approximately 1 p.m. Bank Road will also be closed from 100th to 103rd during the parade. Sunday Car Parade Closures: Vashon Highway will close at 11:30 a.m. Sunday for the Classic Car Parade. Bank Road will close at 103rd, and 178th will be closed at 100th to allow the cars to drive through. Once the parade is over, these roads will open back up for the festival detour route.
Bus service The regular Saturday Metro bus schedule will
be in service during festival weekend and will follow a detour around town. Times will vary slightly from the regular schedule. There is no Metro bus service on Vashon on Sundays. Get complete ferry and bus schedules online or by phone at the following numbers: Washington State Ferries, 888-808-7977, and King County Metro, 206-553-3000.
Parking and permits Festival-goers are encouraged to take a shuttle bus from either ferry dock or Agren Park. Those who drive to town will find parking scarce, and many roads to town will be closed much of the weekend (see Road closures). A limited number of disabled parking permits will allow some to park closer to town. Call the Chamber of Commerce at 463-6217 to obtain a disabled parking permit.
Pets welcome Well-behaved dogs are welcome at the festival, but not allowed in the Beer Garden, Heritage Stage and various other places. There will be eight watering stations for dogs, sponsored by JR Crawford, located throughout the festival. Check out the map in the center of this guide for the “dog bones” indicating where watering stations are located.

MUSIC Live musical performances at the Strawberry Festival run the gamut from bluesy and twangy to sweet and soulful to funky and funny. When it comes to music, the festival delivers toe-tapping entertainment on a variety of stages throughout town. Many of the acts are homegrown, and some performers come from other parts of the region. Several are returning favorites, and many are new to Vashon. A youth stage at the Village Green will again be a part of
the scene. And not to be missed are the street dances, when Portage Fill and other bands with big sounds will get you swinging with your partner. Again this year a stage at the Heritage Museum is being billed as a place to relax away from the commotion and hear great music. So hang on to this handy guide and enjoy Vashon’s rich musical traditions. Everyone on this island, it seems, has a song or two to sing. Paa Kow’s By All Means Band
Loose Change 7:00 - 11:00 p.m. A longtime Vashon favorite, Loose Change aims to entertain with nonstop danceable tunes and a commanding stage presence. The band’s frontman Troy Kindred is an entertainer in every sense of the word. His infectious energy, enthusiasm and powerful voice get the crowd into the act. Kindred is backed by a tight 10-piece band that includes the big organ sound of keyboards, an inspired lead guitar, solid bass and drums and a dynamic three-piece horn section. The sheer size of Loose Change makes for a big sound and a great stage presence.

The Monday Night Jazz Band 2:00 - 2:45 p.m. This jazz band began two years ago under the instruction of Todd Zimberg. Zimberg has worked in music education for the past 20 years. The Monday Night Jazz Band meets weekly to develop a beginning repertory of classic jazz pieces in the styles of the great jazz masters. Current members include Payton Lieske, Aaron Kitchener, Brady Stinson, Ronnie Kruger, Kate Atwell, Christopher Beardsley, Josiah Sprute, Isaiah Hazzard and Steve Braicks.
Mark Graham & Orville Johnson 3:00 - 3:45 p.m. Wry humor, soulful blues, hot pickin’ and sweet country vocals — that’s what audiences get when these two musicians combine forces. Graham’s harmonica virtuosity on Irish and American fiddle tunes and his rich, woody sound on clarinet are well known to fans of Kevin Burke’s Open House. Johnson, an instrumental gunslinger who The Seattle Times has described as “player’s player,” has a gift for finding the secret ingredient that makes a song sound letterperfect, whether it’s an R&B tune from New Orleans, a country blues song or a jazzy ballad.

They play a distinctive blend of folk, folk-rock, singer/ songwriter classics, country, Celtic, bluegrass and R&B.

This band’s smokey vocals will unwind twisted tales of gravel roads, wet city streets and ancient lands. RFQ energizes the air with their prosodical rhythmic covers of timeless classics and shines light on lesserknown songs hidden by the shadows of time. Their original music offers songs of hope and warning, lullaby and alarm, encouragement and caution.
Phil Royal washed up onto Vashon at the turn of the century. Along with his family and a book of cherished photos, he carried a small box of fingerpicks and a couple of old guitars. After hundreds of hours of solitary play, he now has the temerity to climb onto a stage to share what he’s learned, to try to withstand the terror of performing and to generally enjoy laying down a finger-snapping groove.

6:00 - 6:45 p.m. Joe Panzetta cut his singer-songwriter teeth in Boston in the late 1990s and has released seven albums. Kim Thal is most likely teaching your child violin or guitar at this very moment. With Thal on violin and voice, this duo serves up acoustic originals that range from folk rock to ballads to funkalicious beats.

Portage Fill Big Band 1:00 - 1:45 p.m. Comprised of about 20 islanders ranging from professional musicians to amateurs, the community musical group is celebrating its 38th anniversary this year. Charter member Lou Engels still plays in the band. He remembers how Monty Sewell, who once played with Louis Armstrong, helped found the band back in 1973. “The band has pretty much been the same over all the years,” Engels said, “except we have a bigger group of musicians to choose from now. All the seats are occupied.”
Sarah Christine 2:30 - 3:15 p.m. Sarah Christine’s voice is a soulful siren that delivers uplifting messages of empowerment, positivity and connection. Having called Vashon Island home for the past 15 years, this songwriter with a vision thrives in the peace and tranquility of the Puget Sound region. Teaching voice lessons, she also works as a labor support doula. Balancing a career in music with family life offers her constant lessons in surrender, self-reflection and growth, which she then pours into her art.
The Jeff Kanzler Band 4:00 - 4:45 p.m. One KEXP reviewer called Jeff Kanzler “reminiscent of a young Bob Dylan.” Kanzler released “Black Top Road” to critical acclaim and extensive airplay in the US, Europe, Japan and Brazil. The independent release made KEXP’s top 10 list of 2007 Americana releases and reached number four on the Euroamer-

Rumor Has It 5:30 - 6:15 p.m. Rumor Has It formed in 2009, when a group of longtime island musicians from diverse musical backgrounds started jamming and realized their musical destiny was string-band rock. Five years later, after surprisingly few personnel changes, the band is still kicking it. The band includes Roger Taylor on guitar, Steve Amsden on guitars, banjo and cittern, Paul Colwell on mandolin, Sarah Perlman on fiddle, Dan Bruce on drums, Gen Amsden on vocals and Steve Meyer on bass.
4:50 - 5:25 p.m. Touring across continents, Josh Harty’s unique blend of American music has become a must-hear for those who keep the tradition of country, blues and folk close to their hearts. Harty was born and raised in North Dakota, and beginning at the age of 5, he and his father were a staple at town festivals, church events and community centers across the Midwest. He recorded his first album at the age of 9 and the second at 11, together selling nearly 10,000 copies.
Kiki Means 6:20 - 6:55 p.m. Kiki Means has been immersed in music since she was a little girl. Her wide range of covers of singer/ songwriters in the style of Schuyler Fisk, Ingrid Michaelson and Gavin Degraw was the mainstay of her repertoire until she discovered her talent for composition and, more recently, songwriting.
The FieldHands 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. Together for years writing and playing original music on Vashon Island and in the Seattle area, The FieldHands are a rock band. Their music blends some of the best traits of rock, alternative country and the Americana vibe present in music from artists like Wilco, Son Volt, Lucinda Williams, Ryan Adams, Iris Dement and others. Multiple harmonies, driving guitar lines and soaring lead instrumentals punctuate good stories and strong melodies.

Ron Hook 1:50 - 2:25 p.m. Mysterious, captivating and ever so talented, this man will lay down his funky grooves and make you forget about your troubles. Frontman for the legendary island band Subconscious Population, Hook has earned the respect of many people — not only with his ability to play many different instruments, but for his love of life, his artistry and wisdom.

Geordie’s Byre 1:45 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. The name of this band comes from an old Scottish song called “The Muckin’ of Geordie’s Byre,” which roughly translates as “cleaning the cow poop out of George’s cow barn.” The band started in 1999, an offshoot of the Vashon Celtic Players. Geordie’s Byre spent its formative years performing at parties, weddings and the Irish pub Tir Na Nog. This band has a grand time playing and singing jigs, reels, waltzes and various other tunes from the old country.
The Flying Mandolinis 2:45 - 3:30 p.m. The Flying Mandolinis all live on Vashon and perform exclusively on varied instruments of the mandolin family. Each of them also participates in at least two other bands, but they come together in this configuration to find a creative outlet for their acoustic string music. The Mandolinis play a mix of original compositions, American standard covers and world genres in both instrumental and vocal formats.

Geordie’s Byre stylings of artists such as Steve Earle, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan and John Prine. Castle has opened for such artists as Iris DeMent, Rod MacDonald, Steve Young and Bill Staines. Originally from Maryland, he performed during the 1980s as part of New York’s Greenwich Village acoustic scene. Accompanying Carter will be Vashon artists Rob Strausser on lead guitar and Bob Kueker on bass.
3:45 - 4:30 p.m. Janie Lidey has been a singer/songwriter since she was 12. She has been recognized for her excellence in music through garnering an Emmy for her songwriting, a Grammy for the fine arts program she helped direct at a high school in Anchorage and a spot on the George Lucas Edutopia website for her role in helping make the world a better place. Most recently, Lidey had the opportunity to sing alongside John Carter Cash at Willie Nelson’s 80th birthday tribute in Nashville.
The Local Strangers 4:45 - 5:30 p.m. Whether in a vast theater or an intimate living room, The Local Strangers captivate audiences with their powerful voices, compelling lyrics and engaging presence. Over 8,000 miles of independent touring over the last year has seasoned Aubrey Zoli and Matt Hart, both as an acoustic duo and fronting their raucous five-piece band. In each performance, the band’s honest and soulful songs evoke a wide spectrum of emotions spanning from irrepressible joy to wistful introspection.

Home Sweet Home 4:30 - 5:15 p.m. Home Sweet Home is a group of musicians based in Seattle. The themes in their music lie heavily on the contrast between powerful emotions. Their sound sound starts with powerful melodies, strong rhythms, thoughtful lyrics and high energy musicianship. They love traditional forms, but also embrace their modern musical perspective.

They play a balance of originals as well as interpretations of songs by some of America’s greatest songwriters, including Bob Dylan, JJ Cale, John Fogerty and Jackie Greene. The Backyard Bandits are Isaiah Hazzard on drums, Greg Martin on guitar and vocals and Sam Van Fleet on bass and vocals.

The Great Divide

9:00 p.m - midnight at the US Bank Stage This all-islander band was formed in the early 1980s and played locally for many years before hitting the “big time,” touring with blues guitar great Elvin Bishop. In 1987 the band won the Marlboro Country Music Talent Roundup, with a $5,000 grand prize and the privilege of opening for Alabama, The Judds and George Strait in the Tacoma Dome before a crowd of 20,000. Playing a mix of country rock, Texas swing and straight-up rock, their arrangements are sure to rock the town.
1:45 - 2:15 p.m. Always ready for a solo set, Whalen brings cool to its knees (just so he can look cool in the eye) and never forgets that he’s just a punk from the East Coast that stumbled his way across the continent by way of Alaska to end up in the Pacific Northwest. Folk, maritime/Celtic, blues, rock and some musical theater will fill the bill at his festival concert.

Gypsies bring both a sense of fun and passion to their original roots-based rock. The powerhouse rhythm section of Fletcher “Dr. Drumm” Andrews and bassist Steve Meyer, along with Curry on rhythm guitar, provides a deep groove for Rick Dahms (lead guitar) and Larry Lawson (flute/harmonica) to layer on sweet melodic fills, solos and call-and-response magic.
Rooster 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Brought together at The Coop, this group of veteran island musicians packs a wallop. Last year saw the band cutting its beak at the island festival main stage, the Red Bike and numerous sets at Vashon’s infamous Coop parties. Rooster pulls from an eclectic mix of ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s rock, pop, blues and soul music to more obscure jazz/rock and originals with identifiable influences.
Chasing Oz 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. Chasing Oz members have embraced the roots of soulful rock and have produced cutting-edge original songs that showcase their love for music and their spirituality. Their songs are based on real-life events and wrapped with enormous depth, passion and luscious harmonies.

Moonroof 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Based out of the industrial heart of Los Angeles, Moonroof is a four-piece group that was built on a foundation of rock ‘n’ roll, blues and soul. Moonroof seeks to take roots music and turn it into layers of canopy with three-part vocal harmony, Allman Brothers guitar duals, smart songwriting and collaborative influence from all members of the group; it’s a true jambalaya of swampy funk, jazz fusion, classic rock and blue-eyed soul.
Reardon and Bell started singing together three years ago by accident at a party and what a festive time it’s been ever since. Whether it’s jazz standards, folkie favorites, pop singalongs or clever originals, their voices blend and weave into one beautiful sound. Come warm your heart by their soul fire.
March To May 3:15 - 3:45 p.m. Both halves of this duo are passionate about their music and view March to May as a constant evolution. From pursuing collaborations with other artists (with styles ranging from classical to hip hop and electronica) and keeping an ear attuned to the myriad ways they can expand the range and expression of their own music, their primary interest is to keep the music fresh and personal. Above all, they keep love — love for the music, love for each other and love for the world they live in — at their core.
Bill Brown & The Kingbees Adena Atkins 7:00 - 11:00 p.m.
4:00 - 4:30 p.m.
Bill and the band continue to work on refining their show and most recently completed their second album, which will be available at the show. Michael Stango continues to write some incredible songs; John Gaborit is keeping his chops up playing with a few other groups around the Puget Sound, as has Tony Handy. Jim Smiley, a recording artist and regular performer at Harrah’s in Las Vegas, rounds out the band with incredible keyboard playing. Altogether, this group spells high-energy, well-oiled entertainment.
At the intersection of cinematic orchestration, captivating lyrics and polished pop production stand such compelling artists as Florence and the Machine, Lorde, Kate Bush and now Adena Atkins. Hailing from Seattle, this singer/songwriter began work with producer Angelov in early 2013. Angelov’s background in commercial, high-profile projects provides an energizing counterpart to Atkins’ introspective songwriting. The team spared no effort in perfecting their sound.

MUSIC John Browne 4:45 - 5:15 p.m. In the guise of one-fifth of the Ph Phactor Jugband in San Francisco in 1966, Browne was present as an opening act for a number of notable performers, including Frank Zappa, Lenny Bruce, Dan Hicks, The Dead and The Doors. He is married to his art and journeys on with something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue — all of which will likely accompany him to the final fireplace (and some sort of more-or-less inevitable immolation).
Walter & Donny 5:30 - 6:00 p.m. Walter and Donny is a band from Vashon that plays cosmic Americana music, a mix of Americana pop songs blending in an alt-country feel and elements of space rock. So many influences are evident: the Dead, some of the stalwarts of outlaw country (Jennings, Nelson), maybe even a sprinkling of Eagles and James Taylor. But it’s hard to draw a straight comparison.
Rebekah Kuzma & Andy James 6:15 - 6:45 p.m. Rebekah Kuzma and Andy James sing close, sweet harmonies over old and new music of Italy, Appalachia, the British Isles and anywhere else they like. With guest musicians, Kuzma adds mandolin to James’ guitar and banjo.

The Allison Shirk Band 4:00 - 4:45 p.m. Allison Shirk is an all-original, country-rock singersongwriter. A sweetly southern artist with an edge, her music tells stories of a small town girl with an honest quality that shines through her voice and guitar. Shirk is currently fundraising to record her debut album, “Break My Heart.”
11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Avaaza plays Mediterranean-inspired music that is fun to watch and dance to. The musical styles influencing the band’s sound are primarily those from the Mediterranean region, including Flamenco, Gypsy, Arabic, Persian and North African. Members are also fans of music found along the ancient silk trade routes from the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia.
Joe, Kim & Steve
Loose Change 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. A longtime Vashon favorite, this band aims to entertain with danceable tunes, including R&B, swing and the occasional disco hit. Inspired by the movie “The Commitments,” the band’s front man Troy Kindred is backed by a 10-piece band that includes Kevin Pottinger on keyboards, a solid rhythm section, dynamic horns and backup singers.
1:00 - 1:45 p.m. Joe Panzetta, together with Kim Thal on violin and voice and Stephen Meyer on stand-up bass, serve up acoustic originals that range from folk rock to ballads to “funkalicious somethingerothers.” Together this threesome has serious fun sharing rich harmonies and melodic goodness.
The Garth Reeves Band 2:30 - 3:15 p.m. Garth Reeves has been a professional musician for over 18 years, playing with bands such as Dangermouse, Nubbin, Goodness and Blue Spark. Now both as a solo artist and in collaboration with others, Reeves is expanding his catalog of work while mining the roots of the American music vernacular.

Bob Kueker 12:20 - 12:55 p.m. Bob Kueker has shared the stage with the likes of Chuck Berry, Little Feat and REO Speedwagon, worked in the clubs and studios of L.A. and collaborated in some way with an endless list of Vashon Island musicians. Kueker’s music is a combination of blues, rock and swing, and his vocal style has been described as a combination of Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen.
Wren 1:50 - 2:25 p.m. Wren’s all-original, alternative folk music is grounded in classical guitar finger-picking, gentle vocal harmonies and sweeping fiddle lines. The band’s haunting melodies evoke the lands and waters of the Pacific Northwest. Wren is the musical project of singer-songwriter Laura Brady, featuring Ariana Taylor Stanley and Anna Boyd.
Paul Mauer & Vinni Straube 3:20 - 3:55 p.m. Paul Mauer, whose music provides an interesting blend of acoustic indie rock and folk, has recently partnered with percussionist and backing vocalist Vinni Straube. The new duo plan to perform together this year throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Tuesday Nights 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Tuesday Nights is an all-island group of friends sharing tunes for the great fun of playing together, though most members have also played with different bands over the years. Performing mostly “old time” music, their eclectic repertoire includes surprises too.
MoZo 12:30 - 1:15 p.m. MoZo began as a street busking project for Moe and Aimee Zoe, where folk-pop and blues meets rock ‘n’ roll. Sometimes they play shows with just a washboard, harmonica and acoustic guitar, and sometimes Moe slings on the electric guitar and Aimee plays a full drum kit. Many of their songs offer commentary about the state of the world and people’s role in it’s health and survival.
RiverBend 1:30 - 2:15 p.m. RiverBend is the well-known island band of Paul Colwell, Chuck Roehm, Peter Larsen, Shelly Frankel, Dave Lang and Randy Bruce. With instrumentation that includes guitars, banjos, mandolins, fiddles, accordion, harmonica and upright bass, their music ranges from traditional old-time country favorites, to folk songs, Cajun, rock covers and original tunes.
Fendershine 2:30 - 3:15 p.m. Fendershine is a Puget Sound rock band whose musical influences run a gamut as wide as the corners of the country from which its members hail. Arkansas swamp rock, Minneapolis post-punk pop, Bay Area psychedelic doo-wop, Boston folk-punk and Idaho panhandle prog-metal are all represented within the musical library of this Pacific Northwest group.

Michael Whitmore & Callipygous Friends 3:30 - 4:15 p.m. Michael Whitmore is a multi-instrumentalist, deejay and self-described record geek. A veteran of the L.A. music scene before moving to Vashon nine years ago, Whitmore has dozens of recording credits to his name. Joining Whitmore will be Barry Cooper on trumpet, flugelhorn and percussion and Dianne Krouse on alto saxophone, clarinet and vocals.

Using lots of instruments, four-part harmonies and songs covered like you’ve never heard them before, this Seattle group aims to laugh, make new friends and shake up your musical senses.
Born from the Vashon Island music scene, ShayKaStik derives its name from the ability to walk into a local watering hole when there is live music playing, shake a stick and create a respectable band from that sample of customers. The veteran lineup of performers, including Luke McQuillin, Ainslie Macleod, Diane Krouse, Fletcher Andrews and Jon Whalen, are back this summer with more full-tilt music to keep you moving.
