Daniel Robert Price Daniel Robert Price was born on June 22, 2014, at 4:54 a.m. at Forks Community Hospital; his parents are Katharine Crowell and Robert Price. Daniel weighed 8 pounds 9.6 ounces.

Now that the Rainforest Arts Center (RAC) is busy rising out of the flames and ashes to live again, it has occurred to many people that WOCA could use a bit of a Phoenix Rising Resurrection as well. What is WOCA? Why does it need to be reborn? WOCA (West Olympic Council of the Arts) has historically been an umbrella organization that supports, promotes and sponsors the arts in the West End. In order to reactivate this organization and to be in sync with the opening of our new RAC it seems that it would be an excellent idea to call a meeting in the very near future to develop ideas and plans for the future of the arts in the West End. Any form of the creative arts: visual arts such as painting, sculpting, and fiber arts; performing arts such as theater, dance, film, and music; or

literary arts such as the written word and poetry can all be included in these plans. The possibilities, if not endless, are at least vast. All of these forms of the arts can find their way into the Pantheon of performances and cultural events right here in our town at the RAC, especially if we come together and start thinking and planning for these events to happen. A review of a few of the WOCA by-laws is in order: “2.1 Mission: to promote a broad spectrum of arts at the community level.” “3.1 Eligibility: WOCA is an inclusionary organization open to all persons with a sincere desire to assist in carrying out and fulfilling the purpose for which this Corporation has been created.” There is no requirement for dues or for an application. There are other provisions regarding meetings and the required notification of meetings so that the public is

aware of what is taking place. I hope that this letter will motivate interested community members to come together soon, to share ideas for supporting the arts in our community. Sally Milici Beaver

Liedtke benefit garage sale to offer historical lamp raffle In addition to loads of items that will be available to purchase at the Liedtke garage sale this weekend, a chandelier with a link to the history of Forks will be raffled as well. The lamp, circa 1925, once hung in the Groffmans’ residence above their store that was located next to the Odd Fellows Hall. The Groffmans’ original store was lost in the January 1925 fire that destroyed most of the downtown area. According to the Groffmans’ grandson Bernard Judson, who now lives in Hawaii, there actually had been two lights that matched, one hung in the dining room and one in the “music” room. Judson thinks the light may have been purchased in Port Townsend or Seattle when all other fixtures were purchased when the store was rebuilt. Also being offered as a raffle item will be a brand new Mariners jacket. The garage sale is from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.Friday-Saturday, July 11-12. The proceeds from the sale and raffles will benefit Sue Liedtke and help provide financial aid as she waits for a kidney transplant.

White Rock Scandal By Christy Rasmussen Ford As my faithful readers (pretty much just my Grandpa) will recall, a few months ago I wrote an investigative article on the White Rock Scandal of 2014. For those of you who skipped over my column because it’s a joke … literally and maybe figuratively depending on who you ask … I will bring you up to speed. Basically I exposed the vandalizationing (not a real word) of the White Rock. I included some pretty concrete evidence, mainly consisting of non-concrete evidence, which concluded that Forks City Attorney Rod Fleck was the guilty party. What does Rod Fleck have to say about these alleged allegatory (also not a word) allegations? His official response was, “Call my attorney.” … which happens to be himself. A journalist who exposes scandals … including made-up ones … is always aware of possible retribution. I was no exception. Shortly after the article went nationwide, I received a call from a man instructing me to make the scandal “go away.” If I refused to comply, I would be sent to collections for an unpaid water bill. Suspiciously, I haven’t received a water bill in over a year. Even more suspicious is the fact that I am not on city water. Right before hanging up, the caller said, “And this isn’t Rod Fleck either. This is …uhh …Claude Beck!” Having never heard of a Claude Beck, I asked around. Two people claimed to have been in Mrs. Fraker’s class with Claude, six people said they remembered when he scored the winning touchdown against Elma, four people claimed that he played Santa at the Santa Breakfast for many years and my dad said that he remembered when Claude ran into a mama bear and her cubs on the old 5200. Completely off topic but to the hunters/loggers/outdoorsmen, I’m wondering if places such as the “5200” are real. It seems to me that you all just make up random numbers. My dad is always talking about the 900 or the 52,000 or the 3 trillion on Anderson Ridge. I never know where he is referring to but I pretend that I do … every time. Getting back to Claude Beck, I think it’s pretty apparent that the entire town (including my own father) is involved in this conspiracy. Either way, Claude can attempt to silence me with threats of ruining my credit, but realistically my credit cannot get any worse. Even if I had credit that didn’t always make loan-giver-outers laugh hysterically, I wouldn’t let this “go away.” I have a reputation as a serious journalist on the line. Well, not really, but the people of Forks deserve to know the truth or rather the half-truth. Let’s be honest, most things that go around Forks are only half-truths at best anyway. The fact remains that since I blew the whistle on this coverup, the White Rock has been painted green. Coincidence? I’m going to let the people of Forks make that call. I’ll be sitting in my jail cell, awaiting my trial on alleged allegatory allegations of slander against Rod Fleck. This scandal clearly goes deeper than I thought. Parade Countdown Fourth of July 7:30 a.m., I hit the streets of Forks early as I headed for Forks Outfitters and the parade registration table. As I drive down Main Street, many of the parade watching hopefuls already have staked out their parade watching areas with vehicles and chairs. I drive by the Wentworth family staking out their parade watching claim in front of Dana’s Barber shop at about 7:35. As I approach Pacific Pizza, I see nobody, great I am too early, but then no, I see Pat Soderlind, she has my table and I proceed to get set up for the onslought of parade entries. The “parade anxious” start registering even before 8 a.m. The parade entries come in at a steady pace, no problems, then the PUD entry enters the parking lot and it is on fire. Well, just part of it, people run and seem to get it under control. Royalty, logging trucks, horses, veterans, cars, service groups and a giant shopping cart all begin to get into place as the crowd begins to grow at the parade lineup. The Tourist of the Day and all the parade honorees begin to converge and the excitement begins to build as people want to know where to go and what to do, I tell them all to go find Rod Fleck and he will get them lined up. Chairman Mark Soderlind, on his bike, rides around the parking lot. Soon Charlene Caldwell lines up the judges. As the parade entry number goes over the usual 60-something, I can see we are headed for some kind of really huge

parade! At 11:45 a.m. I leave my parade registration post and head for the Forkestra float. There I find my fellow musicians warming up for the parade — Deborah Dillon, Dorothy Burr, Tina Matchett, Barb Nowicki (who had sliced half her finger off the night before, still showed up to play her violin) Cindy Bork, Edna Wade, Jim Stehn, (drove all the way from Grays Harbor to play, bringing a trumpet playing friend), Mike Tetreau and Chiggers Stokes. As parade time approaches, parade entries get restless, especially a large shopping cart full of rowdy groceries. The main instigator seems to be a very large hotdog. At one point the hotdog seems to pick a fight with the can of Coke, but then they seem to settle down. Finally it is noon and the Grand Parade is under way, as the Forkestra leaves the parking lot, Rod Fleck makes the hand motion of “grinding sausage” which is his description of organizing the parade, “It is like making sausage, something nobody should ever see,” and we head out on to Main Street. There is quite a head wind and it plays havoc with our sheet music, which is secured with clothes pins. Our selections for the day are “Semper Fidelis,” “Grand Old Flag,” the “Original Thirteen” and “Beer Barrel Polka.” It is soon apparent the “Beer Barrel Polka” is a hit. At about the Forks Motel my sheet music for the polka is caught up in the wind and leaves my music stand — thank you to the

Sarge’s Place receives Gratitude Grant North Olympic Regional Veteran’s Housing Network, a nonprofit agency located in Forks, is the proud recipient of a Gratitude Grant from Forks Elks Lodge No. 2524. These grants offer an opportunity for Elks to think about how best to serve their community and make it stronger. It is a grant from the Elks National Foundation in appreciation for the local Elks Lodge in increasing its membership for the previous year. The Forks Elks Lodge applied for the $2,000 grant and received it to aid NORVHN in its housing program in Forks. NORVHN is a nonprofit organization that serves Clallam and Jefferson counties whose mission is to heal the wounds, to restore dignity, hope and

self-sufficiency to all veterans in need and to significantly reduce homelessness and poverty among local veterans. NORVHN owns two programs in Clallam County, Sarge’s Place in Forks and The Outpost in Port Angeles. Sarge’s Place houses

eight men and four women veterans for up to six months in individual sleeping bays with a communal kitchen, dayroom, laundry and computer lab. Through this Gratitude Grant the Elks Lodge purchased an upright freezer, free-standing

KitchenAid mixer and various supplies for the program. “With the addition of a freezer, our veterans are better able to get more bang for their buck. When local plumber Nathan Damron goes on a service call he takes his “plumber’s helper” Alice, a Yorkie terrier. Alice survived the mean streets of Bakersfield, before the Damrons rescued her, but sadly on the Fourth of July she did not have as much luck on Blackberry Avenue where she was hit by a pick-up just a few feet from her home. Alice has suffered two broken back legs and is awaiting a final prognosis. Due to the holiday and the fact Forks does not have a full-time vet, her family had a difficult time finding help for her injuries. The Damrons love Alice and she is a big part of their family. Here is hoping the best for Alice’s recovery and hopefully she will be back on the job as a plumber’s helper again real soon.

Domestic Violence Affects Us All A

t this time last year, most of us were excitedly planning for summer vacations, home improvement projects and BBQs. But for three Washington women – Sheila Asselin, Brenda Lee Bail and Amanda Blanchard –July brought an end to all those things. Last July, Sheila, 57, was killed by her husband. Brenda Lee, 48, was strangled by her fiancé. Amanda, 41, was killed by her fiancé days before her wedding. All three were victims of domestic violence. In 2013, 35 people in Washington – including three children – were killed as a result of domestic violence. Thousands more endure daily verbal, physical and sexual abuse. Domestic violence touches more people than you may realize including children and men. Some are able to break away from the destructive cycle, but too many often die trapped in it. Deciding to leave is one of the most risky and terrifying decision most victims will ever make. It’s a decision some victims will only get to make once. Imagine picking up the phone and making a call to someone you hope can provide a safe place to flee and being told there’s no room. That’s the reality for tens of thousands of victims every day. That’s why supporting organizations like the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence is so important. They make sure victims have a safe place to turn and provide important prevention tools for teaching our sons and daughters how to develop healthy relationships, training ourselves to identify signs of abuse among our coworkers, friends and family, and helping abusers break the cycle. I’ve seen how much of a difference every dollar makes for groups like WSCADV. Their Refuse To Abuse 5k is an easy way to raise awareness and resources for an organization that provides a lifeline to thousands of families every year. If you can’t join the 5k, I encourage you to learn more about identifying the signs of DV and how to help.
