Honeybee decline causes concern on Vashon Some call for ban of certain pesticides By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer
Bob Dixon has been raising bees on Vashon for nearly 20 years, but after losing two hives this spring, he is not sure how long he will continue. These losses were not like those that beekeepers routinely experience in the winter, Dixon said, but abnormal and indicative of the loss of bees currently happening on an international scale. The hives, located in different parts of the island, were thriving and had plenty of food when he checked them. When he checked them again less than a month later, there were no bees left in one and only dead bees in the other.
FOURTH ON THE WATER Quartermaster Harbor was a busy place this Fourth of July, as boaters from Vashon and surrounding areas dropped anchors in the bay to enjoy the water and watch the annual fireworks display. The show, sponsored each year by The Hardware Store Restaurant and other donors, went off without a hitch and again drew hundreds of people to watch from the perimeter of the harbor. As darkness fell on the water, powerboats full of partiers quieted and sailboat mast lights twinkled, a scene that photographer Ray Pfortner, who captured this photo, called magical.

“I am really at a crossroads. I have a lot of equipment, but not a lot of hives,” he said. “It’s an expensive proposition.” Dixon believes the cause of his missing bees is Colony Collapse Disorder, where seemingly healthy bees abandon their hives en masse. He attributes the loss of both hives to a class of pesticides called neonicotinoids, or neonics, used in many lawn and garden products and in other pesticide applications, such as flea and termite control. These chemicals, derived from nicotine, act as a nerve poison and are increasingly in the news for their potential link to bee deaths worldwide. On Monday the Natural Resources Defence Council filed a legal petition against the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), asking the EPA to withdraw its SEE BEES, 19

From hydros to dogs, responders see a number of holiday incidents By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer
Officials responded to a number of holiday-related emergencies over Fourth of July weekend, including an accident during the annual hydroplane race around the island. “It was a busier fourth than normal,” said Assistant Chief George Brown of Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR). Brown said VIFR crews responded to the hydroplane incident, where no one was injured, and also transported one person to the hospital for a fireworksrelated injury on the Fourth of July. They also put out three brushfires caused by fireworks, and on Saturday rescued a dog that had become stuck deep in a bog after running from its home during fireworks. Brown said there were a higher number of emergency calls on the Fourth both on Vashon and throughout King County compared with past years. He said he believes there may have been more firework activity this year because the holiday fell on a Friday. “When you combine these things
with the weekend, it changes people’s mentality,” he said. The first emergency call came early in the morning on Friday, when one of the hydroplanes participating in the annual race around the island flipped just off the north-end ferry dock. Paul Hoffmann, who said his boat flipped after hitting a wave wrong, was pulled out of the water and had his boat towed to shore by a boater that follows the hydros every year. Hoffmann was uninjured, but the Coast Guard and King County Sheriff’s Office both responded after someone reported the accident, and Hoffmann was issued a ticket for not wearing the proper life jacket (he was wearing a racing life vest) and not carrying a boater education card. The citation totalled less than $200, according to Dept. Charlie Akers with the King County Sheriff’s Office’s marine unit. For decades hydros have been racing around the island at dawn on the Fourth of July, and for years officials with the King County Sheriff’s SEE HOLIDAY, 18

Third species survey will continue gathering data on Vashon’s natural life Vashon naturalists and other volunteers are gearing up for the island’s third 24-hour species survey. The Bioblitz, an annual event held by the Vashon Nature Center, will be from 3 p.m. Saturday to 3 p.m. Sunday at Lisabeula Park and several surrounding properties. Vashon Nature Center director Bianca Perla said organizers chose the Lisabeula area, which includes pond and beach habitats, for this year’s Bioblitz because past surveys have been near the south and north ends of the island. “It’s a new locale in terms of the island and getting a complete look at what biodiversity looks like on the island,� she said. Islanders start petition to Group Health regarding Catholic hospitals

t this time last year, most of us were excitedly planning for summer vacations, home improvement projects and BBQs. But for three Washington women – Sheila Asselin, Brenda Lee Bail and Amanda Blanchard –July brought an end to all those things. Last July, Sheila, 57, was killed by her husband. Brenda Lee, 48, was strangled by her fiancé. Amanda, 41, was killed by her fiancé days before her wedding. All three were victims of domestic violence. In 2013, 35 people in Washington – including three children – were killed as a result of domestic violence. Thousands more endure daily verbal, physical and sexual abuse.

A group of islanders concerned about access to health care at Catholic hospitals is seeking signatures they will submit to Group Health Cooperative (GHC) for a resolution they hope will be voted on this fall. Kate Hunter is one of those involved and says that she and other Group Heath members working on the resolution believe it is important because in much of the south Puget Sound area, members are referred to Catholic hospitals, which are governed by care guidelines known as the Ethical and Religious Directives. These directives can limit care, she said, and she and five other petition organizers want to ensure that GHC providers and patients will not have to abide by them. “One of the things we want to emphasize is Group Health is a cooperative member organization,” Hunter said. “Members should have a say in how it is run and the care we get.” Hunter noted that on Vashon, Group Health members are frequently referred to Virginia Mason, a secular hospital, but may be referred to a Franciscan hospital in Tacoma. The text of the resolution calls for GHC to have written policies and procedures to ensure that all patients have ready and convenient access to the full range of sound medical practices, that medical staff will have full knowledge of potential

restrictions when referring or sending patients to religiously affiliated institutions and that Group Health staff will fully inform patients about potential restrictions when they send them to those facilities. Only people who are registered GHC voting members can sign the resolution, but anyone who is a GHC member is eligible to register, Hunter said. As of Monday, Hunter said 100 people had signed the petition. The goal is 300 signatures, due to be mailed back to her by July 19 so she, in turn, can submit them to GHC. Hunter noted she is cautiously optimistic that the group, which includes three members on Vashon and three members off the island, will meet that goal. In October, GHC will hold its annual membership meeting, and the resolution, should it garner enough signatures, will be voted on then. If it passes, Hunter says, it is her understanding that the terms of the resolution will become policy at Group Health. Several preserves grow with a flurry of land purchases One seller will donate back to land trust, VAA By NATALIE MARTIN Staff Writer
Vashon’s land trust and King County recently announced a series of purchases that officials say expanded existing nature preserves and will allow aging structures that threaten local habitat to be removed. Last month the VashonMaury Island Land Trust closed on one purchase by the Whispering Firs Bog and two at its Shinglemill Creek preserve. King County, on the other hand, has focused its recent efforts on the south end of Vashon and recently wrapped up a series of shoreline acquisitions at Piner Point and Northilla. The land trust’s $387,000 in purchases were funded by a $4 million state budget allocation secured by state Sen. Sharon Nelson last year for open space preservation on Vashon. Land Trust Director Tom Dean said the agency, working with the county and state, has only two years to spend the funds. He said they have been moving quickly to prioritize land purchases and negotiate with property owners. “Two years may seem like a long time, but it’s not that long for this type of work. We’re busy,” Dean said while walking one of the recent purchases, a 5-acre wooded parcel adjacent to the Shinglemill Creek preserve. The land trust purchased the property from islanders James and Edna Dam, who live on an adjacent parcel. The $145,000 acquisition is significant, Dean said, because it protects all of Baldwin Creek,

Small cutthroat trout have been spotted in the creek. Edna Dam said she and her husband were approached by the land trust and decided quickly to sell the piece of property, as they had already considered gifting it to the nonprofit in their will. And in what Dean called “paying it forward,” the Dams plan to donate a large portion of the proceeds of the sale back to the land trust and to Vashon Allied Arts. “We feel quite good about the whole thing,” Dam said. The land trust closed last week on another 2.5-acre property by Shinglemill, one with a dilapidated cabin perched above the creek. The home was foreclosed on earlier this year and the land trust purchased it from Freddie Mac. The house will be torn down, Dean said, as it is within the stream buffer. It likely couldn’t be permitted today, he said, and has a graywater system and

dysfunctional septic system that feed into the creek. A house in disrepair will also be torn out at the land trust’s third purchase, a half-acre parcel adjacent to the Whispering Firs Bog. Originally the land trust hoped to secure property on another side of the bog, but a local bog expert, Tom DeVries, advised that it instead work to rid the bog’s drainage basin of some old
septic systems. The rare bog, Dean said, is extremely sensitive to outside influences such as nitrogen from septic systems. “He said this is a much more dangerous situation over here,” Dean said. The property, which was on the market for some time and didn’t sell, was purchased for $110,000. The house and its septic system will be torn out.
The Dams’ $50,000 donation to the land trust will likely be used to tear down the two houses, Dean said, as the state funds cannot be used for that type of work. At the south end of Vashon, King County recently purchased nine separate parcels totaling 5.9 acres at the Piner Point preserve and the adjacent Northilla Natural Area. Greg Rabourn, Vashon’s basin steward for King County, said most of the parcels are undeveloped properties and make up about 400 feet of marine shoreline in an important area for fish spawning. There is now 2,500 feet of protected shoreline at Piner Point and Northilla. “Such important ecological properties are always very valuable to get into a place where they’ll be protected forever,” Rabourn said. One property does have a bulkhead that will be removed, Rabourn added, and debris that will be cleaned up by King County. The purchases, totaling a little over $400,000, were mostly funded by the Conservation Futures Tax and the King County parks levy.

Many fruits and vegetables can’t grow properly without pollination, and bees even pollinate alfalfa, which cattle feed on. The cause or causes of colony collapse disorder — the phenomenon that is decimating bee populations — hasn’t been officially determined, but there’s strong evidence that a class of pesticides called neonicotinoids, or “neonics” for short, is to blame for the mysterious deaths. On Vashon there’s been concern for years about colony collapse disorder (CCD) and the role pesticides might play. Many islanders value access to locally sourced and even island-grown produce, and many of us are also environmentally conscious. So it makes sense that our small population would be at the leading edge of a movement away from using neonicotinoids. Two of our home and garden stores no longer carry them, and at least one other is considering whether it will continue to stock them after one islander raised his concerns and started a petition. But as one island beekeeper said, convincing stores oneby-one to stop selling neonicotinoids won’t go far in ending this global crisis. It’s encouraging that this issue is now being taken seriously at a national level, as President Obama recently formed a task force to devise a strategy for addressing CCD. However, temporarily banning neonics while the issue is studied, as the European Union did, seems a next step worth exploring. From what we know, King County, one of the more progressive counties in the state, has yet to take a serious look at this issue and what role the county could play in helping the local bee population. The cities of Spokane and Eugene, for instance, have already banned the use of neonics on city-owned land. Let’s not wait for more studies to be done and for science to irrefutably link CCD to these pesticides — there’s evidence enough of their harm to bees to begin taking action now. In the meantime, farmers and gardeners on Vashon who haven’t already can double check the contents of the pesticides they use. Bees travel just a few miles, so Vashon bees likely stay on Vashon and are critical to local agriculture. Those especially concerned might consider planting a bee-friendly garden or provide strength in numbers by starting their own bee hives.
At my house, we’ve been watching a lot of “Survivor” lately (don’t judge), and we have learned something important: Ozzy is super hot. That and a $1 million prize, a national audience and forced dehydration makes people mistrust everybody and want to vote them off the island. The show, of course, pits a diverse collection of people with excellent teeth against each other. Though in the end they connive, lie, cheat and charm their way to solo victory, for a while, at least, they strategically collaborate. See where am I going with this? Sometimes it does feel like “Survivor Vashon” out here. We don’t get to vote people off, but man, we can do the tribal alliances and simultaneous everyperson-for-themselves thing with the best of them. For instance, it’s a common saying that if you get 10 islanders in a room, you’ll have at least 11 opinionated personalities with different versions of what matters, how we should do things and what makes us ... unique? Is that what we think we are? Question: How many islanders does it take to screw in a light bulb? Answer 1: No idea. I have to call King County. Answer 2: I don’t need your help; get the hell out of my kitchen. Answer 3: Can I just look at the package first and see where the light bulb was made? I want to be sure it’s compact florescent, locally made, fair trade, has a union-friendly, diverse workforce and is non-toxic to dogs. Now there’s a community cocktail. Thriftway has crossed a line with gun owners Thriftway is now a “no weapons, no drugs” zone. What in the world? Vashon is a small community with a thriving Sportsmen’s Club, many hunters and many longtime residents who carry concealed. I just can’t think why Thriftway needs this sign other than to jump on the bandwagon of “think with your emotions” anti-gun sentiment. If there were to be a massacre at Thriftway, it would not be one of our Vashon gun owners who carries a handgun or knife (and you don’t even know it). It would be some mentally ill person who would not care that Thriftway is a gun-free zone. And if such a horror were to occur, someone would call the deputy, because they have guns. But if the deputy is way out on Maury, it wouldn’t help much, and there’d be no locals carrying concealed (with all their training and
practice) to maybe help out. It’s almost personal, this sign, because the people carrying guns are vaguely known about, and now they won’t be shopping at Thriftway. Well, neither will I. As for the no drugs… What? Wonder what that means. No smoking pot in the aisles? We know that already. No buying alcohol? No birth control pills? And the Supreme Court will back you up too. The gun issue is so charged. Like the abortion issue. Somewhere hidden in both are facts and evidence, and if we governed scientifically, both issues would fade away as “issues.” America has a culture of guns, and that is not what the problem is. Let’s go way back to Tim Eyman. Let’s get social services funded so that our babies don’t grow up with so many stressors, so that our mentally ill aren’t homeless on the streets. I guess, bottom line, I think “weaponsfree zone” is inflammatory and has no place or reason in our community. — Clair Englander

Congrats to All I was amazed and impressed at the Seattle Rock Orchestra performance on the 7th. What a lively and fun evening! My congratulations to all who planned and worked on this wonderful event, especially to Stephen Jeong, VAA’s new performing arts director, for the idea. Young people playing and listening to the songs their parents and grandparents loved presented in contemporary arrangements kids can enjoy. What a great way to introduce new audiences to VAA and the O Space. At an informal poll taken at the start of the show about one third of the audience (standing room only!) had never been to a VAA performance and about that same number had never been in the O Space. Clever collaboration! I hope to see many more such events. And a big thank you for letting kids in free. We don’t have enough such events. Emma Amiad
Islanders should unite to save honeybees This is a call to action in response to Bob Dixon’s intelligent letter regarding the chemicals that are killing the bees (“Consider the impact of chemicals that kill bees,” June 25). There are two movements underway. One has deep pockets, vast political ties and works behind closed doors. The other has limited funds, is grass roots, out in the open and gaining momentum. As Mr. Dixon eloquently explained, there are new pesticides (neonicotinoids) that are drastically affecting the populations of our pollinators. The producers of these pesticides (Monsanto, Dow, Syngenta and Bayer) are spending millions to distract the public and policy makers from thinking that pesticides might bee the cause. We, on our island sanctuary, should demand better. We are in control of our own bounty or demise. We need to help those who don’t understand to wake up and join in helping everyone to

understand. If we stop purchasing these products, the stores on island will stop carrying them. Therefore, the second movement. On August 16 (National Honey Bee Day), there will be events worldwide to raise awareness and create political/ regulatory change. Organizations are joining forces to create a “global swarm” to encourage change. There will be a “swarm Seattle” demonstration march, the question is, do we want a “swarm Vashon?” We’re talking a demonstration march, signs, speakers, costumes, media, etc. Perhaps we can create pockets of the island that are pesticide free. Perhaps vendors would pull them from the shelves. Normally, we are a group with diverse interests and priorities. However, this cause should unite us all. Let’s lay aside our differences, join as a community and find a better way. What a great way to educate ourselves and our children to this issue and grass roots action. On June 28, Vashon Island Fire & Rescue celebrated the graduation of its newest volunteer firefighter recruits with a ceremony at the Vashon Theatre. The class, pictured above taking the Firefighter Oath led by Assistant Chief Bob Larsen, includes Adam Joyner, Colin Orsini, Josh Lawson, Ky Burton, Lizzy Ryden and Jessica Swenson. Awards were also handed out at the ceremony, including class Valedictorian, which went to Ryden, who had the highest cumulative test scores. The recruit program is comprised of 280 hours of classroom and hands-on training and testing. Four of the new firefighters are also Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs); the other two will take EMT classes in the fall.

Vashon will fill with art for Friday’s Gallery Cruise Most galleries and art spots are open from 6 to 9 p.m. Lori Gustafson will exhibit her photographs in the show “Flora” at Blooms & Things. Café Luna will show photographs by Seattle resident Jeff Abel, who specializes in landscape and nighttime photography. His work has been featured in galleries and local venues and has been shared by Northwest news sites, including King 5, Kiro 7, The Seattle Times and The Seattle P.I. Hastings-Cone Gallery/Snapdragon will show oil paintings by nationally recognized island artist Olivia Pendergast. Island Quilter will present quilts by Joe Cunningham, who lives and works in San Francisco. Cunningham began making quilts professionally in 1979. His quilts are in permanent museum collections as well as numerous private collections. His 11 books on quilts include the 2010 “Men and the Art of Quiltmaking.” Cunningham gives talks about quilts and teaches workshops nationwide. At Raven’s Nest, Sue and Israel Shotridge will show a collection of their sterling silver bracelets, pendants, necklaces and earrings accented with a variety of traditional materials, including paua and abalone shell, antique trade beads and semi-precious stones. Tlingit designs feature the Killerwhale, Raven, Eagle, Salmon and the Lovebirds of raven and eagle. The couple will be on hand to answer questions about commissioning work and their customdesigned Shotridge iPhone cases. Island artists Donna Romero and Bonnie Wilkins will exhibit their work of oil paintings on canvas and monotype collage at Romero’s house, located two doors north of the Puget Sound Cooperative Credit Union, at 17506 100th Ave. SW. SAW will open with a show called “Artful Handbags Handmade from Found Materials” from ReGenr8, which was founded 10 years ago by Roxy Hathaway and Nancy Scott-Wienker. The new bags in vibrant summer colors and patterns are an example of how the artists resource old materials to give new life to outdated goods. The Hardware Store Restaurant will exhibit two group shows by student photographers. The first is from Vashon
Allied Arts 12th annual Shoot to Show workshop with Ray Pfortner. Nine participants chose trees as their theme. The second comes from Photography Exploratory Week at McMurray with art instructor Katie Lewandowski and mentor Pfortner. Nine students captured impressions of the LeMay Car Museum, Chihuly Glass and Garden, Point Defiance Zoo and Vashon’s Old Chaser Farm. The Harbor School class of 2014’s “Self-Portraits in Pastel” will be on display at Two Wall Gallery. The graduating students created the drawings under the guidance of island artist Jeffrey Zheutlin. Creating self-portraits with Zheutlin’s instruction before graduation has been an annual tradition at Harbor School. VALISE will exhibit work by Matthew Olds and Jiji Saunders. Both artists explore ideas of beauty found in things typically considered unsightly. Olds’ work originates from a burnt-out house he came across while exploring Tacoma. Saunders’ work comes from years of considering the power lines above her mailbox. Olds, a former islander, will show a large-scale painting, video, drawing and interactive piece. Saunders has created a series of 35 encaustic paintings of radiant skies gridded by power lines. Vashon Allied Arts Gallery will show work by longtime resident Nancy Sipple, a skilled metal-smith, needlepoint artist, seamstress and woodworker. She will show an intricately beaded jewelry box, a five-piece jewelry set, handmade woman’s evening jacket, embroideries and a crewel wool hanging. The show also includes work by Ilse Reimnitz, a painter, printmaker and teaching artist who has called Vashon home for over 30 years. She creates watercolors and monotypes inspired by the natural beauty found in her garden. Vashon Bookshop will feature work by island potter and parcour trainer Abraham McBride, who first exhibited his work at the bookstore when he was 14. Vashon Intuitive Arts will exhibit a series of greeting cards and works by multiple artists. Vashon Tea Shop will show oil paintings by island artist Hartmut Reinmitz.

‘Gypsy’ will light up Drama Dock boards

Drama Dock will present the 1959 Tony award-winning Broadway musical “Gypsy, a Musical Fable,” at the Vashon High School theater. The show, directed by Stephen Floyd, will open on Friday and run for two weekends. Although“Gypsy” is based on the memoirs of the famous burlesque dancer and Seattleite Gypsy Rose Lee, the show focuses on the blind ambition of her stage mother Rose. Rose is responsible for pushing the showbiz careers of her two daughters June and Louise. June grew up to become the actress June Havoc, while Louise became the striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee. The quintessential role of Rose was first created by Ethel Merman and since has been played by powerhouse performers such as Bette Midler, Patty Lupone, Angela Lansbury and Bernadette Peters. Vashon’s
own powerhouse actress Stephanie Murray will bring her strengths to the role. With music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the show — considered by many to be one of America’s great musicals — produced such standards as “Let Me Entertain You,” “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” and “Some People.” Floyd said he is excited to direct “Gypsy” because it “features one of the greatest women’s roles ever written for theater. We have assembled a great cast with an incredible cross section of talented kids, teens and
adults with some of the island’s favorite performers as well as newbies to Drama Dock.” In addition to Murray, other cast members include Phil Dunn playing the role of Herbie. Louise will be played by Allyson Tuel, Hannah Fellbaum and Zoey Rice, and the role of June will be played by Catherine Brown and Maria Gilmour. Due to the nature of the story, “Gypsy” will include some burlesque dance scenes. Although there will be no nudity or obscenities, parents of younger children may want to exercise discretion.
“Gypsy” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 11 and 12m and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 17, 18 and 19. Matinees will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 13 and 20. All shows will be held at the Vashon High School theater. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors and students, with reduced prices on Sunday, July 13, and Thursday, July 17. Troubadours play a Celtic, folk and world concert The husband-wife musical duo Four Shillings Short will play a concert from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Church of the Holy Spirit. Four Shillings Short plays traditional and original music from Ireland and Scotland, world and folk music and a cappella songs. The couple plays over 30 different instruments in their musical repertoire. Celebrating almost two decades together, Aodh Og O’Tuama from Cork, Ireland, and Christy Martin from California live as classical troubadours, performing 150 concerts a year in the US and Ireland. O’Tuama specializes in playing the tinwhistles, woodwinds, recorders, Moroccan doumbek, bowed psaltery and spoons. He sings in English and Gaelic. Martin studied sitar for 10 years with sitar master Ravi Shankar. She also plays over 10 other stringed instruments and sings in English, Irish, Spanish and Sanskrit. Tickets are $10 at the door.

At Tahlequah beaches and cliffs offer a walk full of intrigue Meanderings is an occasional series on local walks by author and naturalist Ann Spiers. She wrote a similar series a few years ago.
MEANDERINGS By ANN SPIERS
A suite of thrills occurs on this beach walk that proceeds west from Tahlequah, around Dalco Point and north to Spring Beach Park. Cliffs host locally rare flora, the salt-chuck churns as tidal currents snag on underwater Dalco Wall, and the sharp turn north opens views up Colvos Passage. Park in the Tahlequah ferry lot, if only to inhale the aroma of low tide and honeysuckle as you exit down the stairs. Cross the road to access the beach through the jersey barriers graced with grasses and pink beach peas. The site’s owner, Washington State Ferries, at one point planned to close the beach access. The South End Community Club reacted, resulting in the barriers left ajar for walkers, ferry waiters and the beach launch of hand-powered boats. Next to the ferry dock, the wacky second dock is bird famous for its perching crowd of spread-winged Brandt’s, doublecrested and pelagic cormorants. Crossing the first beach’s shallow bowl, feel the shore’s matrix underfoot, just right for clams: gravelly and slightly mucky. Bivalves squirt from their fleshy siphons. Three kids play in the tide pools. One lifts a good-sized fish, and her mom comes out of the cabin to check on the excitement. American flags furl in the wind, one being a black and white POW/MIA flag. Rightly named Clam Cove, this community oozes good times, the soft partying that happens in small cabins, wide decks and rowboats. The beach is not open to public clamming,
but longtime islander Carol Slaughter offers a clam-digging opportunity through Vashon Community Care’s auction each year. At the cove’s end, a lone boulder has a federal survey marker that reads Dalco Point, locating Vashon’s southwest tip. A mammoth cement revetment (lacking a house) pinches the beach. Check your watch to time your hike so the tide doesn’t block your return. Look back across Dalco Passage, the name for this part of Puget Sound. Tacoma has smoke stacks, and perhaps Mount Rainier is out. What’s missing is the 571-foot ASARCO chimney, that, when blown up in 1993, brought island crowds to witness its demise. Point Defiance is directly south. Once past the empty bulkhead, the backshore rises to become cliffs. The Vashon Stade of the last ice age deposited the massive layers of sand and gravel about 15,000 years ago. Now, the cliffs weep with groundwater at various levels. Some cliffs present sandy faces, pocked with bird-nest holes, and some are dark, slimy green, attesting to continuous dripping water. Large chunks slough to the beach delivering shore-building sand and gravel. Alder and fir trees with giant root balls accompany this sediment buildup so at anytime but low tide, walking is a scramble through the tipped-over trees.

The cliff face on Dalco Point shows steepness, water seeps, vegetation and massive slumped sediment on the beach. These cliffs host hanging gardens of verdant vegetation, a curious mess of rampant invasives (blackberry, Scotch broom), garden escapees (St. John’s wort, rose campion) and both common and locally rare Northwest natives. Among the more common natives (coltsfoot, pearly everlasting, ferns, mosses, salmonberry, thimbleberry) grow tough goldenrod and flashy yellow monkey flower. Spotted midbluff through binoculars, scarlet Indian paintbrush bunches up, an inholder on Vashon’s
south-facing exposure. In a seep, tiny iris grow in the clay. Islanders who are adults now remember Indian paintbrush growing rampantly among the south-end cabins. They recall adventures traveling this beach around Dalco Point, and Grandma’s warning not to wade too far out because of giant whirlpools and big dropoff. STORY CONTINUES, NEXT PAGE

Indeed those fears are well founded. Listen to the noise of the water. Rips, whirlpools and fastcolliding currents create that ruckus. Pigeon guillemots dive for fish; motor boats troll, jig and mooch. In the kelp bed, a seal head bobs, a silver cast to its forehead, looking shoreward. Island artist Mike DeVoe has rendered that dark-socket gaze in public art works: the wild animal interested in us humans, our curious stare returned. What causes this watery to-do? Think of Vashon-Maury Island as the center of a great clockwise movement of salt water. Incoming tide flows from the Strait of Juan de Fuca, past Seattle, then down Vashon’s East Passage. The current pushes west through Dalco Passage, then constricts and gains force as it flows through the Tacoma Narrows and heads into the mud flats of south Puget Sound. The returning tide’s journey gets complicated. The Tacoma Narrows constricts the flow, strengthening the tide’s force like water through a nozzle. This energy meets the waters off Dalco Point, and the outgoing tide is forced north up Colvos Passage. The action of this two-way, circling river of sorts keeps the Sound healthy by twice daily flushing the south sound and delivering its nutrient-rich water north through Colvos Passage into central Puget Sound. Adding to the tidal journey’s complication, massive Dalco Wall creates an underwater barrier of what the divers call sandstone, running parallel to Dalco Point’s east reach. Divers’ blogs describe the wall as dramatic and dangerous, a geologic feature eroded by “power wash-

One blog, Emerald Diving, describes the Wall’s appearance: “Current from the Tacoma Narrows has sculpted amazing vertical channels into these sandstone sections. Ebbing tide blasts huge volumes of water through the Tacoma Narrows and across Dalco Passage. These waters hit Dalco Wall and carve the soft sandstone as they waterfall. The carvings look like exaggerated ripples on a sandy beach turned vertical. Nature is truly a fabulous artist.” A few cabins inhabit this stretch of beach. Gone are the days when one could trespass to peek into windows for a look into beach life. And certainly gone are the days when off-island

teens, solo or in pairs, could “vacation” on Vashon as modern Goldilocks, cabin hopping, choosing the best beds, and eating, not porridge, but summer folks’ store of tinned goods. The ethic, shaky I know, held to today’s backpackers’ motto of leaving no trace. Today, cabins have cameras, motion detectors and alarms. Abruptly, the beach turns so Colvos Passage displays that iconic Puget Sound view: a wide ribbon of glinty water and the shore’s firtextured points receding mythically into the marine haze. Ahead, Vashon Park District’s Spring Beach Park (south of the Spring Beach community) has a stream spreading across the beach, large drift logs to picnic on and a wetland fronting 46 acres of trail-less ravine and ridges. The return rewards constantly: River otters swim purposely along the shore, Mount Rainier looms ahead, the ferry boat slides into the dock. Island teens wrestle at national level Middle schooler leads the way through competitions By SARAH LOW Staff Writer
At just 13 years old, middle schooler Adrian St. Germain’s wrestling resume looks more like that of a veteran, after competing in several high-level competitions across the country last month. After what coach Per-Lars Blomgren referred to as “a whirlwind of very exciting stuff,” St. Germain’s season was capped with a third place in Greco and fifth in Freestyle at USA Wrestling’s ASICS Kids National Championships in Orem, Utah. Leading up to Nationals, St. Germain was chosen to compete for Washington in his age group’s National Dual Team Championships in Indianapolis, helping the team to place fifth in Greco and eighth in Freestyle. With only a week to recover, St. Germain’s next stop was Western Regional Championships in Pocatello, Idaho, and then straight on to Utah for Nationals. “It was a great experience, really fun,” St. Germain said. “I learned a lot about wrestling and a lot about what I need to improve on.” Blomgren, who has been coaching St. Germain for

Three other Vashon wrestlers — Hunter Burger, Chase Wickman and Logan Nelson — have also been busy competing. Burger wrestled with St. Germain at their age group’s regional
and national championships, and Wickman and Nelson are heading to their age group’s nationals, after helping Washington place fourth in the country at the Cadet Dual Team championships. “These are the guys putting in the most time. They are really special kids,” Blomgren said of the young competitors. “They love to wrestle and they’re all a dream to coach.”

On a calm Fourth of July morning, Karl Olsen won the annual hydroplane race around the island, coming in with a personal best time of 40:19. After passing the finish line, Olsen took a tour of the inner Quartermaster Harbor, and upon returning to Jensen Point, asked members of the 175 or so onlookers, “Who won?” To Olsen’s surprise, the crowd yelled back, “You.” The winner of the race the last two years, Evan Mattingly, came in second,
recording a time of 41:26. Four seconds later, Ty Cristophersen crossed the finish line in third place, and Mitch VanBuskirk came in at 42:08, in fourth place. But the story of the morning was that of racer Paul Hoffmann. While the hydros were making their 40-minute run around the island, word came back to the spectators at Jensen Point that a hydro had flipped just off the northend ferry dock. Concerned wives, dads and friends anxiously awaited word of who it was. Word soon
arrived that it was Paul Hoffmann, who caught a wave near the ferry dock and flipped his hydro. Hoffmann later explained what happened. “I went through the front of a wave. ferry dock, caught the flip and ferry service response on video. The ferry Tillikum sent out a rescue boat to investigate. Upon arrival at the scene, it was found that the driver was alright and that the hydros’ chase boat had the situation under control, so the rescue boat returned to the ferry. The Coast Guard and a King County Sheriff’s Office marine unit also came out to investigate. County police cited Hoffman for not having a Coast Guard-approved life jacket and not having a boater education card. The county deputy read off other possible violations for the driver, including no registration, no soundproofing device and no carbon monoxide decal. Hydro drivers have explained that the reason they have not followed all Coast Guard regulations in the past, is that similar hydros in permitted races are not required to comply with all of the Coast Guard’s requirements. Several drivers said that they were going to work to get their hydros
to meet those requirements. The King County Sheriff’s Office, citing safety concerns, contends that the annual race needs to be permitted through the county. Racers have explained that in the 56-plus years the hydros have been circling the island, there has never been an injury, despite several mishaps. The racers say they take many safety measures and the event should not be considered a race, as there is no fee, prize or responsible organization to permit. The event was stopped by the Coast Guard and county police once in 1973, due to similar code violations. Hoffman, whose boat flipped, had flushed his motor and had his hydro running again by the afternoon. He will repair the minor damage to his hydro and along with the other drivers gear up for next year. All drivers say they are determined that as long as they can keep their antique hydros running, they will be circling the island every Fourth of July into the future.

Instead there will be a turn-around at 159th and near the end of Glen Acres Road. These modifications give the route a better flow and views of the water. Race proceeds help support Vashon High School (VHS) athletic teams, including track and boys basketball, as well as fund the annual Bill Burby Wellness Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a VHS senior who has most clearly demonstrated a healthy lifestyle consistent with the living philosophy shown by

They have threatened to shut the race down, but only did so once in 1973. Those involved in the annual race, however, say the event shouldn’t require a permit, as it’s loosely organized with no official sponsor or prize money. While they know some complain about the noise, they say far more islanders support the longstanding tradition. This year five racers participated. Akers said that should the group obtain a free permit, they could have the life jacket and boater safety card requirements waived. He could have ticketed Hoffmann for several other violations, including not having his boat registered. However, he said the marine unit wants to work with the racers, and he cited Hoffmann for what he considered the most serious violations. “These citations I felt were appropriate. James Knauss, who supervises the marine unit, agreed. “What we really want is them to get that application in,” he said. “What we don’t want is to be the guy out here being the bully and writing tickets.” Knauss added that in the last two years, his office received fewer complaints about the Fourth of July race, and this holiday was the first in years that it received no complaints about the noise. “We’re not getting the huge blasts of complaints we used to,” he said. During the day on the Fourth of July, Vashon firefighters responded to three brushfires caused by fireworks. That number is higher than last year, Brown said, but all were put out fairly easily. Just as darkness fell, VIFR was also called after a firework exploded in a man’s hands on Maury Island. Brown said the man lit a mortar, an illegal firework, and was holding it in a homemade holder made of PVC piping when the firework went off, exploding the holder as well. day, responded when a dog that was scared by fireworks ran from his home on Bank Road into Island Center Forest and got stuck in a thick bog. Amy Carey, a volunteer who handles lost and found dogs for Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP), said neither VIPP nor emergency responders could locate the dog, a Vizsla, in the forest, and when he stopped barking they had to leave him for the night. However, on Saturday morning a couple who lives near the forest — and incidentally had their own elderly dog run off on the Fourth — heard the dog crying in the woods. The man waded into the bog, which was thick with mud and brambles, to locate it. Carey said he stayed with the dog for about two hours until VIFR responders finally reached the dog and carried him off on a stretcher. The dog was reunited with his owner, who took him to the vet. VIPP helped reunite eight dogs that ran off on the Fourth with their owners, Carey said, and a couple others were lost but found by others. The couple that helped the dog in Island Center Forest was still missing their own dog as of Monday. Carey had high praise for VIFR, which she said has always been willing to help in serious incidents with dogs in need of rescue. “It’s so great they don’t hesitate,” she said. “I’m sure they are still feeling the nettle stings and pond itch.” As for the hydroplane, Hoffmann said on Monday that he had finished some minor repairs on his boat and only needed to replace the broken windshield. He said he plans to get his boater education card — a fairly new requirement in the state — but he was unsure whether racers would get the event permitted before next year. A permit for the race would be free, but racers would have to obtain event insurance, explain their safety plan and negotiate with the sheriff’s office about the early morning noise, which Knauss said the office may excuse if morning is found to be the safest time of day for the race. Hoffmann, who has raced for about four years, said one challenge is that no one person or organization heads up the event. “Who is going to be the person that gets the permit?” he said.

approval of neonicotinoids because of their effect on pollinators. The European Union has banned them temporarily, and the cities of Eugene, Oregon, and Spokane have banned their use on city-owned land. On Vashon, neonicotinoids are the focus of a petition available at a dozen island businesses and farm stands. The petition, put out last month by island farmer Greg Davila, requests that local businesses stop carrying products in that chemical class. Last week, Davila said more than 450 people had signed on. “We are a unique ecosystem. If we do damage to the island that is irreparable, that is it,” Davila said. On Vashon, the health of honeybees can be determined only anecdotally, and individual beekeepers report a range of experiences. While Dixon believes the death of his bees is attributable to pesticides, beekeeper Margot Boyer said she lost all six of her hives over the winter to natural causes. Islander Elizabeth Vogt, a beekeeper and entomologist, estimates there are about 50 beekeepers on the island, and she knows about 10. While she does not believe she has seen strong evidence of neonicotinoid’s effects on Vashon bees, she would like to create a survey so that a more scientific study could be done, particularly concerning winter losses of bees, a number she said is increasing. “We see abnormal losses, and it is a mystery,” she said. All three beekeepers, however, voiced support for banning neonicotinoids, with Boyer stressing the need for a broad ban on the products. “Going from retailer to retailer begging them not to carry a class of chemicals is a very inefficient way to regulate a neuro-

toxin,” she said. Beyond Vashon, the health of the honeybee is a consistently grim picture. Some 30 years ago, beekeepers in the state routinely lost 12 to 15 percent of their hives over the winter, according to Mark Emrich, the president of the Washington State Beekeepers Association. Two winters ago, Washington beekeepers lost 30 percent of their hives, and last winter, they lost 45 percent. Oregon has seen losses similar to Washington’s, and in the Adirondacks, Emrich said, beekeepers lost 80 percent of their hives last year. Additionally, he sees inadequate record keeping at the national level. “Things are getting much worse, and people are not keeping close track of it,” he said. “There are a couple of years to right this ship before we can’t right this ship.” While several factors may be playing into the decline of the honeybee, increasing attention is on neonicotinoids, which are listed in the active ingredients of products and include acetamiprid, imidacloprid and dinotefuran. Just last month, a study was released in which a group of global scientists, as part of the Task Force on Systemic Pesticides, evaluated 800 peer-reviewed reports on neonicotinoids. They concluded there is enough evidence of harm to pollinators, including bees, butterflies and birds, to warrant regulatory action. Exposure to neonicotinoids can be lethal and kill outright, the authors said, or it can cause chronic damage — impair a creature’s sense of smell or memory, reduce birth rate, alter feeding behavior, create difficulty with flight and increase the susceptibility to disease. The study, published in the journal Environmental Science and Pollution Research, found that terrestrial invertebrates, such as the earthworm, are the most affected group, with pollinators — birds and bees — following closely behind.
The stakes are high, Emrich notes, as bees pollinate one-third of the food supply. “Why isn’t everybody up in arms with pitchforks saying why isn’t this stuff off the market?” he said. Just as it is difficult to determine the health of bees on the island, some say it is difficult to know how prevalent neonicotinoid use is on Vashon. The Country Store and Farm now carries only natural products, and though True Value and Island Lumber were named in the petition, Island Lumber’s Tanner Yelken, who manages the store’s garden section, said the store got rid of most of its neonicotinoid products last winter because of pollinator concerns and just recently disposed of some stragglers that were missed. “It’s good for bees and good for customers,” Yelken said. At True Value, manager Kevin Linnell said they were unaware of Davila’s petition until a customer notified them of it about a week after it had been out. He says the store is now studying the issue further. “We have not said that we will not take the product of our shelves,” he said. “We are determining, with the help of knowledgeable sources, what the detriment to bees is, and will take action from there.” Linnell said both he and True Value owner John Yates would have preferred for Davila to talk with them before he put the petition out and noted that the staff at True Value could be helpful in educating people about different products and possible alternatives. “I am happy to work with the community,” Linnell added. “We want a partnership here.” Even if island stores stop carrying the products, they are readily available offisland, some note, stressing the importance of education. Gardeners may also inadvertently bring the chemicals into their gardens when they buy plants, Emrich said. In Washington, plants can come pre-treated

with pesticides and not be labeled accordingly. He recommends buying plants that have been organically grown. Of further concern in the Northwest, Emrich said, is that in wet, dark environments, neonicotinoids can exist for up to six years. “Just by our latitude, we are going to get more than we paid for out of this product,” he said. Despite the worrisome picture, several experts recommend actions people can take to help bees and other pollinators. Islander Michael Laurie, who developed a set of informational cards about the environmental impact of different gardening products, suggested that people slow down their gardening practices. If they have bugs in their garden, he said, it may be that the insects are beneficial. If the bug is an unknown variety, Master Gardeners will identify it for free. With that information, he said, it is more likely to find a safe, targeted approach for dealing with a particular insect. Laurie also said many problems can be prevented by building up the soil with compost and organic matter and growing a diversity of plants, especially plants that are less susceptible to problems. And, he said, it is often not necessary to deal with insects immediately. “It is not necessarily the end of the world to see a little plant damage,” he said. “Sometimes plants need a bit of time to kick in their own natural defenses.” Others also suggest gardening with bees in mind. Grow a variety of plants that will bloom from spring through fall, Emrich said, pull weeds instead of spray them, and get some beneficial insects, such as ladybugs, which like to eat aphids. He noted he is pleased to hear of the potential steps taken on Vashon, but he, too, would like to see more sweeping action. “Once the genie is out of the bottle, you really cannot put it back in,” he said.

But the years went by, and no one came to adopt me. Couldn’t they appreciate my cool magnificence? The volunteers tried to raise my public profile. I was Spokescat for PawPrints and, along with Flag the 3-legged dog, ran for unofficial mayor of Vashon. Flag got adopted, but nobody came for me. I began to eat too much and lay in my bed all day. I was very nervous because of all those other cats! One day a volunteer decided to take me home. She told her partner I might be a bad girl and scratch him. But when I got there I fooled them! I am so happy I don’t scratch anybody anymore.
