Sammamish senior Jaimey Hayes graduated from high school June 21 without setting foot in a traditional classroom in more than a year. Hayes attended Insight School of Washington (ISWA), a full-time, fully accredited online high school. She decided to enroll after feeling frustrated and disinterested at her brick-andmortar school. “I went to Eastlake High School and then for my senior year I switched,” Hayes said. “Elementary

school and junior high weren’t the easiest for me.” Hayes is dyslexic and said she found her classes exhausting, which left her with little energy for other activities that interested her. “I like to move around and being in a classroom every day is kind of boring, so I wanted to change it up,” she said. Hayes said ISWA is a good school if you are self-motivated and enjoy activities outside of the traditional classroom. For Hayes, that activity is skiing. “You definitely have to be your own

By the beginning of 2015, the five partners in Eastside Fire and Rescue will be operating as a 501c3 nonprofit organization. The partnership includes Issaquah, Sammamish, North Bend and fire districts 10 and 38 in unincorporated King County. When the partnership began in 1999, District 10, which is in unincorporated King County, was the largest member with more employees and money. It agreed to be the employer of record, which placed extra liability on it. Deputy Chief Greg Tryon said that situation affected voting as well. For example, in collective bargaining, all of the partners could vote yes to a contract, but if District 10 voted no its vote would prevail, giving it unfair power. Tryon said the new seven-year interlocal agreement, which begins Jan. 1, 2015, will stay the same. When EFR receives its nonprofit status, it will still be called Eastside Fire and Rescue, but the nonprofit will be the employer of record. That way all the partners will be on even ground. EFR’s new operations committee has assembled the language for the nonprofit, the attorneys are happy with it, and four out of the five partners have all approved it. Sammamish has yet to take up the issue. Tryon said it has gone through the majority of the red tape — for example with the IRS and the Department of Retirement Systems, but there is still some fine tuning to do.

Timber Ridge has relinquished a certificate of need it received last year to establish a 56-bed skilled nursing facility within the community called Briarwood. Timber Ridge is a continuing care retirement community that offers multiple residential options and services, so residents can stay in one community, even if their needs change. It will continue to offer skilled nursing, but only to current residents of Timber Ridge. The certificate of need would have allowed Briarwood to offer skilled nursing to nonresidents of Timber Ridge, according to Janis Stigman, the manager of the state's Certificate of Need program. Timber Ridge has 184 independent living units. "Over the past year, the needs of the center have changed," said Heather Turner, executive director of Timber Ridge. Turner said the facility will now give priority access for skilled nursing services to existing residents. It has 36 beds for residents who need skilled nursing, and if more residents need the extra help they can receive services in their own apartment from a home care agency, or go to another facility and Timber Ridge will pick up the difference in cost until a bed becomes available.

Former Bellingham City Planner Jeff Thomas has been hired as the new Community Development Director in Sammamish and will start work on July 1. The position Jeff Thomas has been vacant following Kamuron Gurol's departure in early March. Thomas was in Shoreline before moving to a position in Bellingham a few years ago, where he was appointed director of planning and community development. “We’re excited to have Jeff coming aboard,” Sammamish City Manager Ben Yazici said. “He has a wealth of experience in western Washington and should hit the ground running for us.”

Sammamish wants art work for new comprehensive plan The city of Sammamish is looking for some artwork to brighten up what is often a drab government document – its 2015 Comprehensive Plan. The plan guides future decisions land use, transportation, housing, development, capital facilities, parks, economic development and the environment. It was last updated in 2003. Artwork will be submitted to the Arts Commission and a panel will select the final artist. Priority will be given to Sammamish artists and a total stipend of $800 will be distributed amongst selected artist(s). Applications are due by 3 p.m. Friday, July 18 and can be submitted to the main reception desk at Sammamish City Hall, 801 228th Ave. S.E. Safe, sane – and fun – activities abound in Issaquah and Sammamish

e’re a week away from one of the grandest days in the year – the Fourth of July. The day offers a variety of exciting community activities in both Issaquah and Sammamish. It also presents an unnecessary danger to the community in the form of illegal fireworks. Both Issaquah and Sammamish flat out ban the use of fireworks. Unfortunately, they are allowed in unincorporated King County from 9 a.m. to midnight. The sad truth is that as exciting as it is to see and hear them explode, each year scores or more people nationally will be hurt, disfigured or killed by our fixation with fireworks. There’s no reason to put ourselves or those we love at risk, given the wide-variety of July Fourth community events that provide excitement that is both safe and sane. Around here, Sammamish will have a full-blown celebration at the Upper Common and Lower Commons that includes a variety of food vendors, music, a kids play area with six bouncy toys, and – of course, fireworks starting at 10 p.m. Nothing a person can shoot off at home can come close to matching the spectacular show planned by professionals. Issaquah, too, has much to offer on the Fourth. The day – Down Home Fourth of July and Heritage Day – combines family fun including a Kids ‘n Pets Parade, pony rides, water balloon fun, and such traditional events as a gunnysack and three-legged races. The heritage comes with activities at the Issaquah Depot Museum that includes making a cedar shingle, eating freshly churned butter, cranking an old-fashioned laundry “mangle” to wring water out of clothes and a chance to work the pump car down the railroad tracks. Let churches help with Tent City issue

Regarding the matter of tent city encampments, I strongly urge the Sammamish City Council to enact an ordinance granting religious institutions broad latitude with respect to how and when they choose to use their real properties for said purpose. Among the more compelling reasons are: Homelessness is a societal problem, which will not cease to exist simply because we choose to shield it from our sight. We, as a society, must and will deal with homelessness both on a long term and short term basis. Religious and charitable institutions are particularly well positioned to deal with the current, or short term needs of homeless individuals. The costs associated with homelessness when not

Little League baseball and softball AllStar tournaments are underway or set to begin, with the best from Issaquah, Eastlake and Sammamish trying to reach the state tournament and beyond. Team members from each of the three leagues at the 9-10, 10-11 and Majors divisions will compete in district tournaments, with a chance to earn a spot at state. The 9-10 District 9 tournament began June 21 at Hartman Park in Redmond, with the state tournament July 12 in Richland. The 10-11 tournament starts June 28, also at Hartman Park, with the state tournament July 19 in Chehalis. The Majors district tournament, which holds the opportunity to advance all the way to Williamsport, Pa. and the Little League World Series, begins June 28 at South Mercer Park on Mercer Island. The state tournament is July 12 in Seattle. All three of the softball tournaments are at Everest Park in Kirkland, with state tournaments in Walla Walla, Federal Way and Oak Harbor.

Three teams based out of Bellevue’s Robinswood Tennis Center are headed to the United States Tennis Association sectional tournament, after capturing local titles recently. Robinswood will send a men’s and women’s 2.5 team, as well as a women’s 3.0 team, to Spokane in August. The teams are all coached by Robinswood tennis pro Jason Chapman and include several players from Issaquah and Sammamish. Neil Lapinsky (Sammamish) is part of the Men’s 2.5 “Team Schmid.” Betty Lee (Issaquah), Asa Watts (Issaquah), Zuleika Deciga (Issaquah) and Madalena McAllen (Sammamish) are part of the Women’s 2.5 “Team Gertmenian.” Amy Huish (Sammamish) and Michelle Moskos (Issaquah) are part of Women’s 3.0 “Team Lilley.”

Skyline alum and former top-ranked prep quarterback Jake Heaps has taken the scenic route on the collegiate gridiron, and has found the last stop on that journey at the University of Miami, the school announced recently. Heaps’ career for the Spartans left him among the most decorated and heralded prep football players in state history. He earned Parade All-American honors, a starting spot in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and AP State Player of the Year honors as a senior, posting eye-popping stats through the air including 45 touchdowns and nearly 3,200 yards. Washington Fencing Academy in Issaquah is home to a national champion, after 15-year-old Matthew Comes won the Division III Epee competition at the USA Fencing National Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Comes, a Bothell High School student and Bothell resident, began training in fencing four years ago at a summer camp through the academy and Northshore YMCA. The championship was the first in three national competitions for Comes, who won all six of his matches in pool competition to reach the elimination bracket.

Once there, he beat out a field of 64 other fencers, beating Andrew Pidhorodeckyj 15-9 in the finals. Washington Fencing Academy students had previously won championships at national and international events. But Serge Timacheff, a co-founder and the CEO, said Comes title is the first gold medal for a club student at the U.S. National Championships. “I really think he has a future,” Timacheff said of Comes. “We are really excited about youth fencing.” Washington Fencing Academy is located at 1505 N.W. Evans Creek Preserve Trail Work Evans Creek Preserve is old farm land that was purchased by the City of Sammamish to both protect the natural landscape and to provide the community with recreational opportunities. The 179 acre site varies from nearly flat meadows to steep slopes. It includes a variety of habitats, including wetland, riparian and forested upland. Work with city staff and Sammamish Trail Stewards to finish the connector trail between Sahalee Way and Evans Creek Preserve! The new trails will be a primitive, natural surface, and will connect Evans Creek Preserve to Sahalee Way. Parties are scheduled on June 19, 28, July 1, 2, 3, 8, 12 and 13.

Sammamish Landing Restoration In partnership with the City of Sammamish, Friends of Cedar River Watershed is hosting volunteer projects at Sammamish Landing. The Friends of the Cedar River Watershed works hard to engage people to enhance and sustain watersheds through restoration, education and stewardship. Work parties are scheduled 9am-1pm on June 21, July 19, October 18 and November 15.

Fourth to bring festivities to Issaquah Issaquah's summer tradition, the Down Home Fourth of July and Heritage Day, will fill Olde Town and Veterans' Memorial Field with family-friendly activities on July 4. The festivities, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., kick off with the Kids 'n Pets Parade along Front Street. People are invited to dress up their bike, scooter, wagon, pet or family members and participate. Parade applications are available online or at the Visitors Information Center, 155 N.W. Gilman Blvd. Day-of registration for the parade will start at 10 a.m. The festivities continue on Veterans’ Memorial Field with pony rides, water balloons, gunnysack-and three-legged races, and red, white and blue prizes. Other events include a hay hunt, a slug race, beauty contest and a pie-eating contest. Immediately following the downtown Fourth of July parade, the Issaquah His-

tory Museums will host the 13th annual Issaquah's Heritage Day Celebration at the depot museum. The free, family-friendly event offers people a chance to make their own cedar shingle, eat some freshly churned butter, try cranking an old-fashioned laundry "mangle" or help work the pump car down the railroad tracks.
