Bearcat clearly remembers his first “level two.” A child had been sexually abused by his varsity wrestling coach and family members of the accused were trying to intimidate the victim against testifying. Before Bearcat and the other motorcycle riders — all clad in leather — showed up, the young victim hadn’t slept for days and would change clothes every time he walked out of the house. But during Bearcat’s first shift covering the front porch, the boy came outside just to say, “hi.” He was also wearing the same clothes as he’d been in before. He eventually slept for 17 hours straight. “This kid doesn’t need to be afraid, to hide when coming out of his COVINGTON house,” said Bob Stutz, a.k.a Bearcat, president of the Lake Washington chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse. “It is very rewarding.” BAKA is an international nonprofit organization that assists any child exposed to domestic violence or child abuse and live in fear of the perpetrator. The city of Maple Valley is reviewing it’s options for courts and jail services as the expiration of the city’s current interlocal agreement for services with Kent is set to expire at the end of this year. Courts and jail costs soared last year, the first of the two-year interlocal agreement with Kent. Prior to 2013 the city had interlocal agreements with Enumclaw for both services. City Manager David Johnston previously told the Reporter that Enumclaw MAPLE gave notice VALLEY and terminated those agreements because Maple Valley’s needs had outgrown what Enumclaw could provide. Johnston has also said the city had expected an increase in costs because of a “sweetheart” deal the city had with Enumclaw, however actual costs far surpassed what the city had budgeted last year.

When Tahoma School District Superintendent Mike Maryanski did his student teaching with the district he never imagined that one day he’d retire after an entire career with Tahoma. “I just loved teaching and I was experiencing success, and I stayed because these other opportunities that were presented are aligned with a passion I had for leadership and the opportunities I had to learn and share that passion kept me here,” Maryanski said.

Originally from Auburn, Maryanski said he wanted to do his student teaching close to home to save money and, “that’s what started this whole experience.” In 1970 Maryanski began his career at Shadow Lake Elementary School, later taking on leadership positions as director of curriculum and human resources. He continued to move up in district administration, being named deputy superintendent in 1989 in addition to his other duties. In 1994 he took the helm as superintendent. Maryanski counted his first

Howard “Howie� Koch may not have been able to attend the fundraiser in his honor, but he still made a strong impression. Koch, 3, is one of dozens of children who will be Chief for a Day around the state on August 21. The Black Diamond Department struck first, holding a luncheon for Koch on June 22 at Mama Passarelli’s restaurant. The fundraiser collected thousands of dollars, which will be donated to Howie’s family. Howie was unable to attend the June fundraiser because he is in the hospital. Police Chief Jamey Kiblinger has known Howie’s mom, Jenna, since she was a kid. Kiblinger said she doesn’t know much about the little guy other than he is “the cutest little thing
you’ve ever seen� and a perfect fit for the cause. “It’s just one more example of the things that we try to do for our community,� Kiblinger said. “We are in the service business and I don’t think there’s a better cause than our kids.� Koch was diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma in Dec. 2013, at the age of 2. Doctors determined a tumor in Koch’s adrenal gland was sitting on his kidney and required chemotherapy. The tumor was removed in April, but Koch still undergoes chemotherapy and will need various other procedures, including a bone marrow transplant, over the next few months. After months of fighting through the disease, Little Howie gained the moniker “Cancer Ninja.� The Black Diamond Police Department has reached out to a chronically

The billboard contest is sponsored by the Washington State Patrol, Maple Valley Police, Tahoma School District and King County Emergency Medical Services. Avery, daughter of Michael and Jill Estes of Maple Valley, created a drawing that advises drivers not to use their cell phones while driving. The artwork features a cell phone surrounded by a “no� symbol and the words, “Shut off and drive.� In addition to having her art displayed on the billboard for the entire month of September, Avery won an HP laptop computer that was presented to her in a brief ceremony during fourth-grade lunch at Glacier Park Elementary School June 17. Maple Valley Police Chief Michelle Bennett presented the award, along with State Patrol Trooper Stu Frink and Lt. Ken Noland. Avery knew she had won the contest and even had a speech prepared. “I would like to thank my family and my class, I couldn’t do it without them,� she said, as her classmates clapped and shouted their approval. The law enforcement agencies began using emphasis patrols in February to identify and cite drivers who are not driving safely near school buses. The State Patrol and Maple Valley police are partnering in Operation S.A.F.E (Speed, Aggressive Driving, Fail to Stop and Enforcement), a proactive and educational approach to keeping students safe when exiting and entering school buses while stopped. hen domestic violence is in the news, it’s usually after the worst has happened: a violent assault, an injured child, a murder. So it’s no surprise that when we think about domestic violence interventions we think about police, courts, and hospitals. But what about the role each of us can play? Many of us have either experienced abuse in our own relationships or know someone who has. And often we don’t know what to do about it. Fortunately, in this community, and in every community across Washington State, there is a local domestic violence program: a place where anyone can call—privately and at no cost—to talk with someone about concerns, options, and safety. You don’t have to be the person experiencing abuse to call. Advocates are there to talk with friends and family, neighbors and c ow o r k e r s — a ny o n e — about how to be supportive if someone turns to you for help. But what if we didn’t have to wait until things were awful to intervene? What if we could stop this violence before it started? Domestic violence is preventable and talking with people of all ages about relationships is a key part of prevention. No one is too young or too old to think about what a healthy relationship looks and feels like. It’s never too early, and it’s never too late, to talk about how we deserve to be treated. My legal battle of the century
I spent weeks daydreaming about how I would Perry Mason the dude — calling him to the witness stand and cross-examining him until he realized the full meaning of hostile witness. “I OBJECT! THAT IS HEARSAY!” … “HE CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH” … “OH, I’M OUTTA ORDER … NO YOU’RE OUTTA ORDER.” … All right, so I’m not an attorney, and have never cared to be one, but I’ve seen plenty of trials — in movies and in person as a cops/courts reporter in multiple states. And I was angry. I was recently pulled over for, what I believed to be, questionable reasoning. I then sat meekly as a two-bit, no-good, dirty, rotten, ugly, menacing, jerk of an officer belittled my girlfriend and me. Yes, I still might carry a little resentment on this. And perhaps I carry a slight bias. The man in question might be a fine cop that we caught on a bad day. Or maybe he’s a bad cop that I caught on a normal day. The point is, I planned to tear into this officer’s character and knock him off his proverbial high horse. I didn’t actually care if I won or not. It was the principle of the thing. … I’ve never been one to seek conflict, but this officer turned me toward a different course. He ground my gears. All of them. Four car passengers and I found him to be rude, unprofessional and, really, quite scary. I wanted to call him out in a public setting. To be self-righteous. To fight for the little guy: me. I’ve been a party to the court process one other time, fighting a civil case against an unreasonable landlord. I hired an attorney and won. But my attorney’s fees were more costly than the amount that actually came back to me. So I would be fighting this $175 ticket pro se — e.g. on my own. … Here are some cliff notes on the altercation: I drove four friends (three ladies, one guy) to a house in Gig Harbor. The passengers noticed a man two lanes over, staring directly through his window at us. This was not a casual glance — this was a hard stare from an intense man looking to make eye contact with people in the car. The women are sincerely frightened and, actually, ask me to get away from the “super creepy guy staring at us through the window.” The “creep,” as you might guess, is an officer in an unmarked cruiser. And, lucky me, he is unhappy that I didn’t recognize him as an officer of the law. At this point, the man appeared to be looking for a fight. trying to get my attention and get me to slow down, he said. “She saw me,” he said, pointing his finger through my window at Laura, my girlfriend who sat in the front seat. “So did he,” this time to the male backseat passenger. “I’m so sorry,” I stumbled, caught off guard by the aggression. “We had no idea who you were or why you were driving at our side.” “You were scaring us,” Laura added. These responses didn’t sit well. The officer began to yell questions at me. When I didn’t answer fast or loud enough, he ordered me to get out of the car. “Wait, I’m sorry. What did I do?” I asked. “You don’t need to get out of the car,” Laura said to me. This may not have been entirely accurate advice. “So you’re not getting out of the car?” the officer asked, leaving before I could respond. The five of us sat stunned; unsure of what just happened. It was hard not to laugh and jump to conspiracy theories: this guy is going to plant evidence on me. He is going to throw me up against the hood of the car. Am I about to get shot? “Please don’t escalate this,” said the male passenger, a former war journalist who was once shot and held as a prisoner of war during a conflict in the country of Georgia. As I considered the use of a recording device to document the rest of the interaction, we saw two more police vehicles arrive. There were at least five officers on scene. Uh oh. Another officer approached my vehicle – playing good cop to the others’ bad. He politely asked if I would step outside to separate me from the situation. I obliged. I had nothing to hide. The officer informed me that I was dealing with a lieutenant. Apparently I’d angered him. Had I been drinking? Smoking? Had I ever smoked, ever? Had I ever done any drugs, ever? He administered a horizontal gaze nystagmus test — having me follow a blue light with just my
eyes. After about four minutes of eye-watering pupil gymnastics, he led me back to my seat. The original officer returned shortly thereafter with a speeding ticket. He handed it to me but stared directly at Laura. “This all could have gone much quicker if he’d just gotten out of the car,” he said, snarling. ... As Laura and I brewed, trying to not let the interaction ruin our weekend, it became increasingly clear that I would be fighting this man in court. So I slowly set up my legal team of one. I Google’d “pacing” and tried to figure out why the officer would pace me from the side, rather than from the standard position of behind. Why didn’t he use radar? Can Laura testify in her military uniform? I subpoenaed the officer and requested discovery on multiple pieces of information. I checked the officers profile on the county website. His credentials were fairly substantial and he was also a county court liaison. Yikes. He may know what he is doing on the witness stand. I sent a draft of my six-plus pages of notes and bullet points to a friend who recently graduated law school. She provided pretty simple advice: “You probably won’t have this much time,” she said. “Shorten it.” In essence, this is not a murder trial. The judge may not be that interested in what I have to say. So I chopped my questions and opening and closing statements. I’ve covered the crime beat as a newspaper reporter for more than five years in four states, and have worked with dozens of law enforcement officials over that time. I’ve found almost all of these individuals to have integrity and take pride in what they do. I am glad to live in a country where an individual has the right to speak up in a “my word versus the officerâ€? situation. And I also think it’s wise that the officer generally gets the benefit of the doubt. The expectation is that the officer has no real skin in the game — that he or she is a trained enforcer of the law who will remember these situations more accurately than the likely nervous individual in question. But, in my mind, this was different. This was an unnerving situation that involved an abrasive officer who saw a
group of 20-somethings laughing together in a car. Did he expect it to be an easy DUI? Drug bust? Maybe it’s just me convincing myself, but I questioned the motives.‌ I worked on perfecting my script until 1 a.m. the morning of the hearing. After a quick sleep, I asked Laura to help pick out my clothes. Do I need a tie? “It’s just traffic court,â€? she responded, as sweetly as she could. I had her pick me out a suitable tie. We arrived early at the courthouse and waited. My legs shook. Laura’s did, too. Every person who turned the corner or opened a door brought the eager inevitability that it would be our accuser. Laura was ready to glare. And yet, a half hour after the case was scheduled, the officer was still nowhere to be found. About an hour after the hearings started, the prosecutor informed the judge that I had checked in, but that the subpoenaed officer had not. The judge said he typically gives law enforcement a

half hour to arrive. Thus, it was time to move on. Case dismissed.‌ Even though we won, we felt defeated. “I can’t believe he didn’t show,â€? Laura said, repeating it slowly two or three times. “All wound up for nothing. He probably didn’t even think twice about it.â€? But the relief had also set us free for cockiness. The case was summarily dismissed. No fine to pay, no dock on my record. We walked out of the courtroom saying things like you do when someone doesn’t arrive for a fight. “We woulda wrecked that guy‌ I really wanted to show him‌ to give him a piece of my mind‌â€? At the street corner outside of the courthouse we both finally declared victory. “We WONNN,â€? I shouted, throwing my arms up in a “V.â€? “Congratulations,â€? murmured a stranger in a bolo hat, as he walked past us on the street. Thanks, man. We earned it.

[ OPTIONS from page 1] The budget numbers were adjusted higher this year, and as of the end of the end of April, costs for the year for jails were estimated to be slightly over budget while court costs were estimated to be less than budgeted. In 2013 the city had budgeted $139,000 for costs related to jail services and as of Dec. 31 had year-to-date costs of $186,142, or 34 percent over budget. For municipal court costs last year the budget was set at $328,000 with year-todate costs at $351,175 as of Dec. 31, 7 percent over budget. This year for jail costs the city budgeted $226,100. As of the end of April $67,349 had been spent with a year end estimate of $226,251. For courts this year $375,950 was budgeted. As of the end of April $98,060 had been spent with a year end estimate of $354,473, or six percent under budget. So far the city has received proposals for services from Kent for both courts and jails, King County for courts, and SCORE for jails and Issaquah for both. City Manager

David Johnston said the city had also expected proposals from Seatac, but in evaluating what it could offer decided it couldn’t take on more at this point. “We’re presently assessing all the proposals,” Johnston said. “We do have options that we are looking at. For jails Maple Valley currently pays Kent for two guaranteed spots for prisoners at the Kent Corrections Facility every day at a rate of $220 per day. In addition, Maple Valley pays $135 per additional inmate per calendar day. For courts Maple Valley currently pays $14,583 per month for two court days, one overflow court day, and one jury day per month. In any month where the number of cases filed is in excess of 333, the city pays an additional $4,000. Additionally, the city receives a quarterly invoice for other costs such as summons and interpreter fees. Johnston said the city’s police chief, prosecutor and judge will be part of the review process. “They look at it totally differently than I do,” Johnston said. “On the administrative side it’s very limited how we can involve ourselves in the court process.”

He added that as users of the courts and jails, the insights the chief, prosecutor, and judge bring to the process is helpful. One of the issues to be considered, Johnston said, is the location of the jail and courts and the accessibility of both, including public transportation options. “We’re trying to get all the data in a comparison matrix, and then we’ll make a presentation to the City Council in the next month or so,” Johnston said. Johnston said he had not yet reviewed the proposals and he didn’t know yet if the city could expect much difference in cost under a new contract. He did reiterate that cost won’t go back to what it was under the city’s previous contract with Enumclaw. “That increased cost is something we should have built into our model as we grew, but we didn’t have to,” Johnston said.

Members of the BACA chapter are expected to be involved in the Covington Days parade on July 19th. BACA only works with children who have been referred from child protective agencies. Victoria Thron, director and founder of the Covington Domestic Violence Task Force, said she has been working to collaborate with BACA for a couple months. Thron said she discovered BACA through a Facebook post. “I’d never heard of them before,” she said. “It was video. I was so moved by it.” Covington hosts the annual Domestic Violence Regional Task Force meeting. Last year a forensic nurse presented on strangulation. This year, they hosted Bearcat and his Vice President, Danger, who told BACA’s story and mission to about 60 people in the business of helping children. “Everybody was just so blown away at what they do,” Thron said. “The commitment they have as warriors for children is just phenomenal.” The stereotypical perspective of bikers is slightly misleading in BACA’s case — these are certainly not Hell’s Angels. BACA is a 100 percent voluntary organization filled with social workers, mechanics, software engineers, farmers and even a minister who goes by the monicker Preacher Man, who must all pass background checks. No matter the professional background, the mixture of leather jackets, revved cycles and rugged road names seem to come together as exactly the kind of friends a scared child needs. “We use that image to our benefit,” Bearcat said. Bearcat, a retired social worker who worked for more than 40 years with neglected and abused children, wears multiple patches, including one that says, “No child deserves to live in fear.” When he started with the organization, he’d tell people that

It has to do with protecting and empowering kids.” There are five BACA chapters around the state and about 153 more in 44 states, plus in countries around the world, such as Australia, Italy, France and Canada. There are approximately 30-35 bikers in the Lake Washington chapter, split about evenly between men and women. Bearcat said the chapter has helped 135 kids since it started in 2007. Each accepted child gets a bicycle jacket and picks a “road name” to be part of the BACA family. The level one acceptance ceremony involves all available bikers coming together at the victim’s home for a united front that often leaves the child in awe. “The only reason I’m here, the only reason I do this, is to see the smile on that face,” said Celt, a member of the Lake Washington chapter for five years. BACA members attempt to form relationships with victims, taking them to ice cream and going on rides. Victims are also invited to come together barbecues and a Christmas party. Kids may stay under the BACA wing until the age of 18, but it is not typically a multi-year process. Still, BACA members are available all day or night, every day of the year, for help. “Even though a case may end, that doesn’t necessarily mean the case goes away,” Bearcat said. Bearcat said he’s never been involved in a fight over his nine years as a BACA member. He said the organizations goal is to always get the proper authorities involved. “We don’t believe in violence and don’t condone violence,” he said. “If push comes to shove we will protect the kid… but it’s never come to that.” The group’s physical presence is most powerful at home and in the courthouse. BACA members are known to surround a child victim as he or she walks into the courtroom to testify – providing a shield from the eyes of an alleged abuser. Kathryn Lavender Coulbourn passed away on June 14 at home in Black Diamond with her family nearby. Kit was born in 1939 in Atlanta. She graduated from Southern Seminary College in Buena Vista VA in 1959. She majored in and taught equitation. She was an accomplished rider and competitive jumper. She is survived by her husband George Irvin Coulbourn, Jr whom she met while attending college. They were married in 1960. She is survived by her three children, Kathryn Coulbourn Mitchell who lives with her husband Joe in Redmond, George Irvin Coulbourn, III who lives with his wife Lesley and son John William in Black Diamond and John Craighead Coulbourn who lives with his wife Kim, son Price Irvin and daughter Hazel Mae in Maple Valley. Douglas Keith Thompson Douglas Keith Thompson was born August 5, 1959 in Thibodeaux, Louisiana He died June 16, 2014 in Maple Valley, Washington. Keith graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1978 where he was a member of the famous Robert E. Lee Marching Band. He graduated from East Texas State University with honors in 1983. He was an Associate Editor of Model Railroader Magazine at Kalmbach Publishing in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He married Michelle Sullivan on November 26, 1994 in Kent, Washington. Their twin girls were born September 16, 1995 in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Shortly after their birth Keith and Michelle moved the family back to Washington State. As a technical writer Keith worked for AT&T Wireless, Microsoft, Nintendo and F5 Networks. The hobbies he loved were photography and model railroading. Keith is survived by his wife Michelle; daughters Denver and Mikayla; sister Kemala Thompson-Knott (James); and mother-in-law Millie Sullivan. Robert W. Thompson Robert Thompson passed away on Saturday, June 14th after a great day in his garden. Bob was born April 17, 1931 in Seattle to Bill and Germaine Thompson. He graduated from Enumclaw High School where he lettered in three sports and was voted, “Most Likely to Succeed.” The first in his family to attend college, Bob worked several jobs to pay for his education. He graduated from Washington State College where he pledged Sigma Phi Epsilon. His Aunt Hazel Medina encouraged him to pursue a career in dentistry and in 1959 he graduated from the University of Washington Dental School. Bob was always a cougar at heart. Bob was a dentist in Auburn for over 30 years. He was gentle in his work and kind to his patients. Everyone loved him. He was the last generation of dentists who “did it all” from fillings and cleanings to braces and dentures. If a patient couldn’t pay his or her bill, Bob would “barter” with them. He volunteered his time with the elderly in a cerebral palsy home. Following his retirement from dentistry he spent hours upon hours in the garden. He loved working around his home and five acres of land, while playing with his dog, Bogey, and helping care for the 4-H club’s alpacas and llamas. He became a certified Master Gardener and continued to serve others, helping neighbors prune trees and sharing starts of his various vegetable plants. Bob also enjoyed golf. He was a founding member of the MeridianValley Country Club and was board president in 1976. Not to be left out of fun, he was a founding member of the Shank City Invitational Golf Tournament and played in the tournament for over 40 years. His other hobbies included reading, hunting, fishing, skiing and hiking. One of his accomplishments he was most proud of was climbing Mount Rainer. He made the trek with Judy two times and was successful in scaling the summit in 1987. Bob also loved the Seattle Mariners and Husky football. Later in life, he became a docent with the Black Diamond Historical Society & Museum. He enjoyed his weekly visits to Black Diamond and he loved sharing stories about the town and his childhood. Bob is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judy; his son Will, (Helicia) and daughter Sarah, (Tim); three grandchildren, Robbie, Madison and Samuel, his brother John, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. His smiling face, warm personality and love of life will be missed by all who knew him. He had an amazing network of friends. There will be a celebration of life service on Wednesday, July 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church (24447 94th Ave. S., Kent 98030) followed by a reception at Meridian Valley Country Club. Please join us in “wearing red” as that was his favorite color. The Carly Stowell Foundation helped Luciano Mariano reach his dream of competing in the US

As the world watches Brazil host the dazzling spectacle of the World Cup, Luciano Mariano is content to train indoors, on mats, four hours every day, more than 6,000 miles away. Mariano loves soccer, but doesn’t mind missing the expensive commotion. He is living his dream in America. “I fought many championships in Rio de Janeiro and one in Sao Paulo, but my dream was to fight one day in the United States because for many it’s an impossible dream,” said Mariano through a translator in an email interview. Mariano, 27, is 1.6 meters tall and 51 kilograms. That’s about 5 foot 6 inches tall and 112 pounds. In jiujitsu, he competes as a blue belt in the rooster weight division. Thanks to a grant and a nonprofit organization, Mariano arrived on his first ever plane flight at SeaTac airport on May 22 to compete in the International

in Brazil. And though the journey to Mariano’s dream of fighting in America is complex, it all started with Elena Stowell and the Carly Stowell Foundation. The foundation is built on Elena’s heavy heart, started by she and her husband after the sudden death of their daughter, Carly, in
April 2007. Carly, a talented athlete and musician, was a freshman at Kentlake High School and participating in a club basketball trip in North Carolina when she suffered a fatal heart arrhythmia. The mourning parents formed the Foundation shortly after the death, with the goal to provide afford-
able and accessible opportunities in sports and music to area youth. Elena found her own peace in Brazilian jiujitsu . It’s her sport of choice and “part of my journey toward healing.” She opened a jiujitsu branch in the foundation two years ago, starting a donation program to help the favela — a.k.a. slum — kids in Brazil who participate in the sport. Elena secured a $1,500 grant from the Challenged Athlete Foundation to pay for Mariano’s travel, while her own foundation picked up the other expenses. Elena wasn’t exactly sure how to handle the adventure and told the airline agents that Luciano may need some assistance because he didn’t speak English and was a doublearm amputee. At the exit area of the gate, she saw her guest being escorted in a wheelchair. “Apparently most people requesting ‘special assistance’ receive this courtesy,” [ more CHANCE page 10 ]

[ CHANCE from page 9] Elena wrote in a blog post on her website, elena-stowell.com. “I think he was embarrassed. I later learned that someone on the plane tried to feed him, thinking he couldn’t do that himself. I’m glad he had a good laugh over it and didn’t start his trip off thinking Americans are helpful, but presumptuous and maybe a little dumb.” Mariano lost his hands at 3 months old, after being placed in the care of his drunken grandfather who inadvertently knocked a candle over and fled the burning house while Mariano burned in his crib. Prosthetics are not an option in the impoverished neighborhood of Japeri, located in Rio de Janeiro, where Mariano
was born and lives. Thus, he’s never known hands and adapts as such. Mariano uses a fork and toothbrush, can write and use a computer keyboard. Most of his free time is spent on “Faceebookee,”Elena said, where he keeps family and friends updated on his trip. His family and friends cried during the first conversation through FaceTime and Skype. “This is gigantic for the whole neighborhood,” Elena said. “He’s not just his own dream, but living all of their dreams.” Despite some communication lapses, Mariano has helped solidify a healthy dose of perspective in Elena’s life. purchased an electronic tablet for taking pictures in America. But the portable computer never made it far, as Mariano was robbed at gunpoint on the way home with his girlfriend. James Foster, a jiujitsu coach at Foster Brazilian jiujitsu in Kent where Mariano is training, gave Mariano a new tablet as a present. As much as Mariano enjoys watching soccer on TV, and hopes Brazil does well in the tournament, he also knows that many people in his home are upset that the games distract from important issues in Brazil. Driving by the suburban houses in Kent, Mariano commented to Elena about the beauty of the area. “I always watch American films in Brazil and always saw the houses and cities but never imagined to see in person,” he said through email translation. “All different and beautiful.” Mariano’s favorite move on the mat is the leg triangle — a submission that involves choking the opponent with his legs. During his first training, he showed off a move where he grabs the tail of his opponent’s Gi uniform with one foot, tosses it to the other foot behind his opponent’s back, and drags the individual down to the mat. It’s worth three points.
“Everybody watched like a deer in headlights,” Elena said. “It’s amazing.” Mariano speaks Portuguese and very little English, other than words such as “thank you” and “OK.” Mariano said his disability has led many to doubt his abilities, but jiujitsu gives him the ability to fight and “made me overcome the fear” and “to see I don’t have disability in my life.” Elena said arm amputees are extremely uncommon and Mariano became a celebrity of sorts at the competition. Though he feels he could have done better at the competition, Mariano looks for the positive. “I’m gonna keep on trying,” Luciano said, translated through Elena. “He didn’t get submitted and that’s a victory,” Elena added. Mariano returns home on July 4. Until then he will keep training, sightsee in San Francisco and participate at a tournament in Santa Cruz where he will have at least one match. There may be a roller coaster or two mixed in, Elena said, though that may be superfluous. “Training and access to the internet is all he needs,” Elena said.
