always rely on one friend to cheer him up. Bert Colon had an infectious smile and a genuine love for everyone around him. He never allowed his disability to stop him from
being social and active in school. Colon helped out on almost every sports team and was always there to cheer on the school’s athletes. “Whenever anyone walked by Bert, he was always excited
to see them and would make a big deal about them,” Sickich said. “You couldn’t help but light up and smile around him.” It’s this contagious positive energy that made Sickich
want to do something special for Colon. Sickich decided to gather as many people from the community as possible to throw a parade for him. “I wanted this to be epic; I wanted him to drive into

fter almost a decade of meeting and discussion, Bothell will receive a new City Hall building soon. Bothell City Council members approved construction of a new City Hall building, replacing the current City Hall which was built in 1938. Construction is scheduled to start in late July 2014 and is expected to take 15 months. “This is an exciting moment for the city of Bothell, and I thank the citizens of Bothell for their input and support of this important public facility,” Mayor Joshua Freed said. “In the last 10 years, no project has [ more HALL page 5 ]
To have a complete understanding of what their future patients go through, four naturopathic medical students at Bastyr University became homeless for a week. Allie Donnell, Lydia Peters, Jenna Biollo and Krisitn Thorvilson set up a tent at the back of the campus and challenged themselves to live there free of luxuries, such as cellphones, showers, transportations and microwaves. The students are not eating anything that is not a donated nonperishable food item and they only use a propane heater to cook their food. [ more TENTS page 5 ]

Kenmore City Council members have chosen community activist and volunteer Stacey Denuski to fill in for
Deputy Mayor Glenn Rogers as he takes a leave of absence. Denuski moved to Kenmore with her husband and two boys in 2011 and has been active in the community ever since.
“I have two children and am passionate that the city where they grow up is safe, has passive and active play spaces, a sense of community and a good economic base,” she said. “I have volun-
teered in many ways over the years and would like to expand my commitment to the city as a council member. I would like to help Kenmore reach its goals and shape the city’s future in a
way that allows all citizens to be heard, acknowledged and respected.” Rogers is taking a leave of absence for four to six months for health-related reasons. He was involved
in a rear-end-collision in February on the way to his son’s wedding in New Jersey, which resulted in whip lash, pain throughout Rogers’ back and neck and a sustained [ more COUNCIL page 3 ]

Man brakes into apartment for sex A man is in custody after Bothell police arrested him for entering a stranger’s apartment with a knife and soliciting sex. The suspect, Zachariah M. Higuera, entered the 18-year-old woman’s apartment the night of June 2 in the Husky Village Apartments, located on the UW Bothell Campus, according to investigators.
Prosecutors said Higuera attempted to hug the woman, took off his pants and asked her if she wanted to have sex with him. Higuera was arrested in the apartment parking lot after another man told an officer he was trying to open doors. The woman told police she didn’t know the man. Prosecutors call him a danger to the community.

H
igh school graduation is a great time in a person’s life. You reach that point where you feel like you have obtained a life-long goal, you can finally start making some choices about your life and that all-important feeling of freedom. But it can also be a stressful time. Where do you go from here? What kind of jobs are available? What college do you attend? Should you take time off if it is available to you? That feeling of freedom and becoming an adult can be exhilarating and full of pitfalls. After all, the choices you make will only impact the rest of your life, so, no pressure. But put the pressure into perspective. The rest of your life is now a blank canvas on which you get to make the decisions as to which colors you use and how to create the picture. So again, no pressure, but think big. Don’t settle for the first thing that comes along. If your passion is the arts, don’t be put off by the struggling artist’s lifestyle. Most great art comes from those who struggle to attain greatness and dedicate themselves to their craft. The arts can be the most difficult to find success in than most other endeavors as it not only takes exposing your soul but hard work and some natural talent all mixed together. If you are set on attending college, go for the area of study that you are most interested in. If it makes you happy, you can find ways to be successful. And aim high with your studies. You live at a time in human history when we are making huge breakthroughs. You could be part of a team that cures cancer, perfects growing replacement organs in a lab or lands a human on Mars. Many people shy away from going after their biggest dreams for one reason or another. They feel the need to find comfort for the short term at the
expense of taking “their shot” at bigger possibilities. Some are pushed onto a road they would not choose for themselves. But the great thing about your new-found freedom is that you have choices. You always have choices. Some people go after their biggest dreams and fail. But the majority of those people don’t end up with regrets. When you commit yourself to your dreams at a young age you still have time to recover and find stability later in life. I have many friends who spent their 20s going after their dreams. Some attainted those dreams and some did not. But none of them have regrets if they committed themselves to it until they made it or it was no longer obtainable. For those who never tried, it can be a different story. Luckily, if you grew up around here and attended schools in the Lake Washington School District Matt Phelps

(Northshore School District) you have the advantage of receiving a good public education. You have a basis on which to build upon, wether it is the arts, sciences, athletics or another area. But after you have removed your cap and gown and are able to relax a little, take a look at what you really want to do with your life. If it is a career, remember, you will be doing it for at least 40 hours a week, and maybe for the rest of your life. Sometimes achieving greatness is leading a life you are happy with. If your dreams are more of a hobby that you would like to grow into something bigger, commit yourself to it and don’t look back. But go for greatness and don’t waste that blank canvas that lies ahead. No pressure, just dream big.

terest costs even more. With that said, we need our city manager and his staff to find ways to finance the project that will minimize long-term debt. We do not want our debt ratios and bond rating to be compromised. Here are a few of my ideas and I’m sure there are many others: Can we build a parking structure as part of this project that will serve visitors and citizens coming to downtown Bothell and also provide ongoing revenue? Can we write leases for retail and office space that maximize current, potential revenue while giving flexibility and capacity as Bothell’s city staff grows in the coming decades? Let’s encourage private investment in this project wherever possible and look for interesting new retail concepts on this site that will minimize capital costs, accelerate our growth and attract more visitors. Also, by making this decision now we increase the chance of maximizing the return on the sale of the Dawson Building and other city properties as we consolidate, to offset the initial cost of this new facility. Character - We, as Bothell citizens, are proud of our city’s history, its leadership in education and technology, as well as its rural and unpretentious values. Our new city hall must reflect these values so that each citizen feels a sense of identity with it.

Donnell said. “It’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life and not step back and be thankful.” The women say they have received many stares and have received questions from students walking by observing their tent. “This has served as a great opportunity to raise awareness of our cause to those who ask about it,” Biollo said. “The response from our peers
has been really positive so far.” They have raised more than $700 for Tent City so far. “We also put out a box near our tent for people to put in nonperishable foods and we were amazed at the huge response we got,” Peters said. “I think everyone is willing to be generous if they know the cause and where their generosity is going.” The four women say this
experience has been stressful because it fell during school and a week before finals. “But we ended up doing it at this time on purpose because we realized that homeless people are always faced with stress too,” Peters said. “They are looking for jobs or busy with other things while they are also homeless and searching for food.” Despite the hardships, the women say they are glad they
did it. “It’s been a wonderful experience overall, it’s brought us together and taught us so much about what our future patients struggle with on a daily basis,” Peters said. “We hope to make this a yearly tradition.”

Samberg pointed out that every financial decision is linked. Since the city decided to build a new City Hall, they had to ask the public to assist in repairing parks and streets through a $43 million bond levy, she said. “These are not separate issues, they are linked,” Samberg said. “When we use money to build a build-
ing, we must use money from others to help take care of our other necessary expenses.” Freed said the old City Hall building is falling apart and the cost to repair it was too expensive. “When the first City Hall was built, there were only 500 residents and we now have more than 41,500 residents in Bothell, so it just makes sense we would need a new space to fulfill new needs that result from this population increase,” Freed said. “Also, repairs needed for this building were starting to become more frequent and outrageous.” Freed also said that the repairs needed to fix the front of the building that is deteriorating would be very expensive. “The current City Hall and
Dawson buildings are old, tired, and inadequate and have become increasingly costly to maintain,” Stowe said.”City Hall is an essential public facility. The construction of a new City Hall is an important decision for Bothell.” Bothell City Hall will be built alongside a private sector development that is planned for the City Hall block, known as the ‘City Center.’ “Our goal is for the community to use this building, to take ownership of it and feel like it is a part of Bothell,” Freed said. The new City Hall will provide office space for staff members who are currently housed in City Hall, the Dawson Building, and multiple portables and leased spaces, combining nearly all
city services and functions most visited by the public into one building. The facility will be an energy-efficient office building along with public and civic components that fit the character and function of Bothell, while providing a public place that Bothell residents and businesses can use. Active public discussions, evaluation and planning for a new City Hall have been ongoing since the first discussion of it. In 2011, following a competitive process, the city selected a development team led by Vulcan Real Estate to complete the City Hall project. The project was suspended in late 2011 due to timing of completion of Bothell’s other major downtown revitalization projects. “The timing and location of City Hall construction is expected to help ignite the fuse of redevelopment, as well as unlock the flow of private sector capital investment in Bothell’s downtown, ” Stowe said. “The City Hall’s office presence, with nearly 200 employees at build-out, will positively impact the health of downtown businesses during the day while the additional parking the City Hall provides will support both existing and new businesses.”

“We thought it was so important to put ourselves in the shoes of our future patients,” Peters said. “This has been so good for us because it has taught us how hard it is to be homeless; there is no privacy and we feel like there is nowhere for us to put our stuff. We are going to walk away with so much more empathy and compassion for the homeless.”
The women got the idea from a nonprofit they volunteer at called Tent City, which is a tent community that provides a free, safe place to live for low income individuals. They created a Facebook page and a website detailing what they are doing and asking for food or money donations they plan to give back to Tent City. “Trying this out has made us appreciate all we have,”

While the sales and discharge of fireworks are illegal in Kenmore, Bothell allows them on a limited basis. The city of Bothell does allow the sale and discharge of state-approved Class C fire-
works within certain dates. Sales dates are July 1-4 and times vary by date. Discharge times are only on July 4 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Washington State Patrol maintains the list of legal fireworks, which includes ground and hand-held sparkler devices,
certain aerial devices (small mortars), smoke devices and devices which offer combinations of these effects. Firecrackers, salutes, chasers, skyrockets and bottle rockets are not allowed. You must be at least 16 years old to purchase fireworks and at least 18 to discharge fireworks.
It is illegal to discharge fireworks on city property or publicly owned parks. Schools, churches and private facilities should be contacted for approval before any discharge occurs on their property. For the use of illegal devices or any fireworks use outside of approved discharge hours dial 911. City police resources will be stretched thin during the fireworks season and may not be able to respond immediately.

or the longest time, nutrition experts have emphasized the importance of eating breakfast. But while numerous studies have been conducted on the subject, it has never been scientifically proven that having a meal at the start of the day can make a significant difference for our nutritional health and wellbeing. Now, two studies have questioned just that. Most of the past research focused on the eating habits of study participants and observed certain advantages among those who ate breakfast by comparison to those who didn’t. For instance, several studies, including some sponsored by the government, found that school children who came to class hungry were less attentive and scored lower in academic tests than their well-fed peers, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. Still, as scientists like to say, research of this kind can only reveal correlative but not necessarily causal relationships. In other words, we don’t really know whether having empty stomachs actually turned these kids into poor students or whether other factors played a role as well. Yet, one studysuggested that feeding young children a healthy breakfast every day could increase their IQ. Among adults, taking time for breakfast seems most beneficial for those who try to lose weight. A number of studies have found that breakfast eaters have an easier time to control their cravings than their breakfast-skipping counterparts, thereby keeping them from overeating later in the day. But again, these are observational studies that don’t really tell us whether having breakfast can actually contribute to weight loss, although many health experts like to think so. By contrast, the latest studies first mentioned above tried to shed some light on the actual effects of breakfast on the body in terms of metabolic and cardiovascular health. One study, conducted at the University of Alabama, concluded that neither eating nor foregoing breakfast had any discernable impact in terms of weight control. The other, this one from
