The rebuilding of a frequently used bridge appears to be good news for some students and area park walkers, but miserable news for some neighbors. “I’d just assumed it (would) stay the way it is,” said Joe Diambri, who has lived across the street from the former Jenkins Creek pedestrian bridge for 15 years. The Covington City Council completed the first major step to rebuilding the bridge by entering into a contract agreement with King County at a council meeting May 20th. The roughly 60 foot bridge washed away during a particularly heavy rain storm in the winter of 2010. It took the city nearly three years, but it finally received a $418,000 federal community development block grant from King County in November
A marijuana grower and dealer from Maple Valley who shot fleeing robbers in a residential neighborhood was sentenced to 32 months in prison, while one of the men that was shot received a 12 year sentence. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Jason Loken, 38, received the 32 month prison sentence, along with three years of supervised release, on May 27. Prosecutors said Loken thought he lined up a drug deal to sell six pounds of marijuana to a call girl he met on Backpage.com on Aug. 13, 2013. Instead, he was confronted by two robbers who bound him with zip ties and stole his marijuana, hash oil and guns. Following the robbery, Loken freed himself, grabbed another gun and started shooting, wound-

One of the first things to be noticed about John Ewell is his ink. A small, plain cross adorns his left cheekbone, just under his eye, and his arms and hands are covered in an array of art as well. At first glance the colors run together, but a question about a tattoo on his right hand – a heart, anchor and a cross — reveals that much of his art, done by his
brother, tells Ewell’s story. That particular tattoo, he explained, represents faith, hope and charity. Then there’s “hold fast” and “disciple” spelled out across his fingers, the latter word formed when he folds his hands in prayer. On the right side of his neck is a piece that reads “prodigal son,” a label he said is more than fitting for him. That tattoo is juxtaposed with one on the left side of his neck that is the logo for his passion, Anchor Ministry.

Ewell lives in Maple Valley and attends Hope Fellowship Church. He formed the nonprofit Anchor Ministry as an outreach to inmates four years ago. He’s the first to admit that he never expected to work for a ministry, let alone run one. “Guys who do ministry have big degrees and speak well, and certainly don’t look like me,” Ewell said. He grew up hopscotching around Los Angeles and his dad worked for the LA County Sheriff ’s Office. A spooky run is coming to Maple Valley this fall. A dead run, to be exact. The event, Cedars Dead Run, is a collaboration between the Youth Council at the Greater Maple Valley Community Center and King County Parks. Kristiane Byers, director of youth programs at the community center, said the function of the Youth Council is to plan different events for the community and the students wanted to plan a running event. The Youth Council’s idea began as an ugly sweater themed run during the Christmas season, but the realities of ugly weather caused them to rethink that idea. Resident Leia Duckworth has been a longtime runner
and became a King County Parks Ambassador last year for Cedar Creek Park. Passionate about running and connecting to people in nature, she was looking for a way to have an event where families could come together and get outside. “I was actually running one day and I was thinking that Maple Valley doesn’t have any events that are over three miles,� Duckworth said. She said her desire to give back led her to a Maple Valley City Council meeting, where she spoke during a comment period about wanting to organize a run. From there, Councilwoman Victoria Jonas connected Duckworth with City Manager David Johnston who connected her to the community center and Byers. From there they were able to get the county on

Police have arrested two individuals they believe are responsible for recent thefts at the Maple Valley library. Detective Jeffrey Johnson said a 22-year-old female and 25-year-old

male are believed to be responsible for three instances of purse and wallet thefts that occurred May 20, May 23 and June 4. Johnson said the cases will be joined and sent to the prosecutor’s office for review, with felony charge recommendations: three counts of seconddegree theft, two counts of forgery, and one count of second-degree possession of stolen property. Maple Valley resident Kelsey Jones, who frequents the library, had her purse stolen June 4th while she used a library computer. Jones said
police arrived within five minutes of calling 911 and were able to reclaim her wallet, credit cards, gift cards and her ID - delivering it to her home less than two hours after the incident. Johnson said police had surveillance footage of the two individuals using previous victims’ credit cards and was able to identify them walking out of the library on June 4th following Jones’ reported theft. Police found the reported stolen credit card on the female suspect while she attempted to make purchases at QFC and a stolen
gift card on the male, who was located behind the supermarket. Jones credited collaboration from police and the library for the apprehension. “I was mulling through the events that transpired, realizing that this kind of story so very rarely has a happy ending. But mine did!� Jones said in an email. Johnson said the arrests were made thanks to some good police work, good timing and luck. “All that came together and we got it,� he said. “It worked out well.�
Johnson still recommends due diligence in order to keep personal items safe and protected. “I don’t think people should put their guard down for things like this,� he said. “All it takes is an opportunity.�

Traumatizing family vacations The middle of June is a happy time for students and teachers when schools release the future leaders of our country back to their parents. Parents must accept at some point that although your child has purple hair, wears hand-me-down clothes from a Martian and listens to music that sounds like barfing, they will eventually win. They will be smarter, cooler and able to make pink and green tech devices work that God doesn’t even understand. That war was lost the moment you decided to have a child. However, June 21 offers a little bit of solace. The first day of summer is opening salvo in the generational vacation wars. Let me reveal a secret only known and admitted by parents past the age of child-rearing consent. Family vacations are not meant to be fun, joyous, educational, bonding experiences to teach life skills or broaden horizons and all the other nonsense shown on television ads. Vacations with children are designed for generational revenge. New parents, (parents who do not have children … yet), are easy to spot because they still know everything about child rearing. There are few adults more knowledgable about child rearing than a couple who has never had children, but are preparing to begin the happy journey. That was me. I had it all planned out. Then my daughter was born and the plan dissolved into particle chaos. I was at a conference recently and a woman I was talking to told me how her father and mother made her go to every boring museum

When I asked her where she planned to take her kids on summer vacation, she said a new modern art exhibit in Wyoming. Heeheehee ... Another battle on the frontline of the vacation wars. When my daughter was about 9 or 10 years old, I took her to St. Ignatius, Mont. and the National Bison Range. Katy had the lucky chance to get up before sunrise and endure a slow trek through the bison range. The buffalo were so far away they looked like brown specks on the windows. Later that day, we decided to rush back from Helena and go through the range a second time, just making it at 6 p.m. before the gates closed. When we came over the top ridge we were
suddenly surrounded by the entire bison herd. They began using our car as a scratching post blotting out all light inside. She yelled at me for stranding her in the middle of knowwheresville surrounded by “marauding, stupid buffalo” ready to trample our car and use it as a bridge to romper room. It wasn’t until she was an adult that Katy realized I made her live through bison trauma, instead of going to Disneyland to see a threefingered mouse. She claims I have scarred her for life by not taking her to Disneyland. (I think I know a couple of colluding reporters who would agree, but I am careful to never let them compare notes.) Someday, somehow, my daughter will end up back at the bison range telling her bored kid about how she was nearly trampled because of her dopey brother and misguided father. I win.
events. Consider your own lives. Have there been times when a word or suggestion sets you off on a different course? I’m guessing all of us have had such events that occur to us. Here are some famous people in history whose lives have changed by chance or choice. George Washington came close to being killed by bullets several times during battles. During the Battle of the Monongahela in 1755, which started the French and Indian War, Washington was a 23-year old British colonial colonel under the command of Gen. Braddock. He had his horse shot out from under him twice. Of 1,300 British soldiers fighting the French that day only 30 survived and Washington was one. Had Washington died, the history of the United States would have been very different. Alfred Nobel (1833-1896), Swedish chemist and armaments manufacturer, and the inventor of dynamite, among other inventions, had the experience of being mistakenly reported to have died in a French newspaper obituary. It was actually his brother who had been killed in a factory explosion in 1888. The notice erroneously stated that, “The merchant of death is dead.” The report went on to say, “Dr. Alfred Nobel, who became rich by finding more ways to kill more people faster than any other person, died yesterday.”
The report shocked Nobel enough to cause him, according to some accounts, to create the Nobel Peace Prize after his actual death so he might be remembered for something more than creating explosives. A chance meeting between two strangers, Gwyneth Paltrow and Lora Lundstom Clarke, in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, saved Clarke’s life. Clarke was roller blading along the Hudson River when she crossed a street and saw Paltrow in an SUV on her way to a yoga class. They stopped to talk and because of the slight delay, Clarke missed her train to work. Had she made that train she would have undoubtedly been at her desk on the 77th floor of Tower 2 of the World Trade Center. When she arrived on a later train, she was in time to see the first airliner slam into Tower 1. Ten years later the two women met again. Paltrow’s remark was, “It still gives me chills, I can’t quite believe how many other people changed the lives of strangers on that day.” I write these stories because they are interesting, but also because it is sometimes a healthy thing to reflect on the major chance occurrences that happen to all of us that cause us to make different choices in our lives and thus change the course of events.

Chance shapes all that we do When I was in my early 20s, a father of one of my friends asked me what my goals were. I didn’t have an answer, nor did I want to think about it, but his question kept coming to the surface of my consciousness again and again. Another man, a college professor, suggested I go into teaching. Something clicked in my head because I liked learning. It seemed to fit. I set my goal to become a teacher. Why did I become a teacher and now a writer? Another person, my future managing editor, having seen my letters to the editor about the local fire district, asked me if I wanted to write a column for the paper. I had just lost my bid for re-election to the Enumclaw City Council and the timing was right. As I reflect on my life, I see that chance has played a big part in it. Someone made a comment, or a suggestion, and it changed my life forever. Opportunities and choices in all our lives are influenced by such occurrences. Our lives are often made up of such serendipitous

The children were excited as the first cars appeared, carrying smiling, waving guests/dignitaries. Everyone in the crowd was enjoying this old-time tradition when suddenly the loud noise of an electronic bullhorn shattered the peace. A small group of severely misguided religious zealots carrying a cross and banners assaulted everyone with a harsh admonishment to “repent”. I was shocked by the inappropriateness of this behavior, which was clearly
upsetting to all. A short time later, they showed up at Lake Wilderness Park doing the same thing amongst the cars on display. I pray that these poor, misguided souls will come to understand that no one comes to repentance through such tactics. Oh, and by the way, Why didn’t the Maple Valley Police enforce the law against disturbing the peace?

It’s a week after my 50th birthday party and I’m still feeling the glow. I’m not talking about the feeling of love I still have from all the people who took the time to wish me a happy birthday (I am grateful for them), I’m referring to the fact that my house and yard are still fantastically tidy. Over the years, my sister has occasionally done “commando cleaning� of my house. She entered into a Catholic Convent when she was 20 years old and they taught her how to thoroughly clean. Not that she didn’t already know how to clean, but convent
window cleaner?� Whatever their aunt did seemed like an exciting adventure. Gone are the days when my kids clamored to help my sister clean the house, but she still whips them into action. They don’t protest, knowing cooperation will result in a shorter chore time. Don’t misunderstand here; I had already “cleaned� house to “it will have to do� condition. My main thoughts were focused on setting up tables and chairs for my guests, finishing making the food for my birthday tea party and arranging the serving table. However, my sister came ready for action. Watch out whoever was standing in
the way; you would have been liable to get swept out with the cobwebs. Okay, I admit it, when I clean, there are usually cobwebs left hanging in the corners of the rooms. I don’t always look up when I clean because I’m afraid of what’s up there. Regardless, my sister was there to make my house shipshape and she had an agenda. I stood back and let it happen. Really, who would protest a person’s desire to thoroughly clean your house? I didn’t interfere, especially, since she took time off work to help me organize and clean for the party. If she had a plan, who was I to interrupt it? Then there was my yard. My best friend from Florida

surprised me and showed up the Wednesday before my birthday. She helped me design my garden many years ago before she moved away. She comes once a year to spend a week playing and gardening in the Northwest. Her presence the week of my birthday was a surprise and she jumped right in to polish up my garden. Again, don’t get me wrong, I had weeded the garden before she came to “it will have to do� condition; I had other things on my mind. Have you heard this scenario before? She put the finishing touches on my garden that I hadn’t had time to do: she planted, rearranged, weeded, got my drip system up and running, replaced broken pots
and got it ready to show off at its best. She did all the tasks I didn’t have time for. So besides bragging that I have the best sister and best friend in the world, I’m trying to expound the virtues of having a big party once in awhile. All the things we always mean to get done actually get done. Hmm? Maybe I’ll plan for another big birthday party next year. Anyone?

The human foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints and more than one hundred muscles, tendons and ligaments. It is one of the most complex parts of the human body and often times one of the most neglected. Our feet are an essential part of everything we do. Whether it is walking, exercising, playing sports or just standing; when you’re feet hurt it can impact our lives in so many ways. One problem many older adults have with their feet is circulation, but this is a problem that can affect anyone at any age. When you don’t have good blood flow in your feet, you may experience tingling, numbness, cramping and discoloration of the skin and toenails. There are many everyday factors that can restrict blood flow in your feet – being outdoors in the cold or having your feet in cold water; shoes or stockings that are too tight; sitting too long with your legs crossed; smoking and drinking too many caffeinated beverages. Individuals who suffer from diabetes need to be particularly sensitive to the circulation of their

The word ‘diet’ in today’s society often implies calorie restriction, calorie counting and deprivation, all of which will not support weight loss efforts. An increasing number of people are choosing extreme, calorie restrictive diets because they’ve reached a point of desperation and will do anything to lose weight. In addition, when it comes to losing weight most people want a quick fix that provides the most results in the least amount of time. While this would be great if it could be done in a healthy way, it just isn’t possible. When it comes to weight loss efforts, extreme calorie re-

feet. Reduced circulation can lead to a loss of feeling in the foot, a condition known as neuropathy. This can prevent diabetics from feeling small aches and pains that let us know we have been cut or bruised. Left untreated these small problems can develop into more serious conditions. As the days get longer and the temperature gets warmer many of us in the Pacific Northwest will be out walking, jogging, running or playing sports. For parents, this also means baseball, softball and soccer season. As we get more active outdoors the chances of injuring a foot or ankle go up considerably. Here are a few tips to help prevent those common sports injuries: • Warm up prior to any sports activity – Light stretching or a slow jog for two to three minutes will warm up those muscles. • Condition your muscles for the sport – Increase your amount of activity gradually over a period of time to build muscle strength and mobility. • Choose athletic shoes for your foot type – Choose a
shoe for the type of foot you have and use sport-specific shoes. • Replace shoes when tread wears out of heels – People should replace shoes every six months. • Be careful running too many hills – It is a great workout, but be sure and build up gradually to avoid injuries. • Prevent recurrent injuries – If you have experienced previous injuries, use a brace or tape to prevent it from reoccurring. Remember most strains and sprains can be treated with rest, ice, compression and elevation. More serious cases may require a brace or cast. It is important to seek medical attention as soon as you can for any foot or ankle injury, especially if it hurts to walk on it or you’re experiencing swelling. Prompt and appropriate treatment ensures the best possible recovery.

of different foods. When calories aren’t being consumed in adequate amounts the body goes into starvation mode, clinging on to all the fat is has available. The body will begin to break down and burn stored sugar (glycogen) and muscle before it spares fat, which may lower the number on the scale, but as a result may severely compromise healthy body composition. Finally, not only does extreme dieting cause negative physiological effects, it takes the joy and pleasure out of food, which we all need a little bit more of.

[ BRIDGE from page 1] of 2013. The bridge was originally built in 1990 when the park was owned by King County. Covington received the park from the county in November 2002. The city’s goal has been to construct a new bridge without using any city funds. “There were other things we had applied for, we just hadn’t been selected previously,� said Don Vondran, Covington Director of Public Works. In its prime, the bridge was part of a walking transportation corridor heavily used by residents of the Timberlane neighborhood to get to Covington’s downtown core, as well as by kids hiking to Jenkins Creek Elementary. Diambari said the bridge, shrouded by thick tree brush, also helped foster an area prone to drug exchange, vandalism and late night/early morning noise. Diambri said it was common to see needles and condoms strewn about the bridge. “The drug traffic we used to have – it was bad,� Diambri said. “I wouldn’t want my kids walking through. Especially when it’s dark.� Diambri said children and young adults still cross the creek, hopping the fence or going on private property. Another neighbor, Juan Morfin, agreed, saying the bridge brings in heavy foot and street traffic to the area houses at all hours of the night. Morfin, who lives in the house he grew up in, said he remembers when the bridge was first built. “I was so ecstatic when they tore it down,� he said. “It’s quieted down a lot and that’s good.� Morfin is quick to point out that he enjoys and supports parks. But when he was told of the grant to rebuild the

Today he is married with four kids and their family has called Maple Valley home for the last eight years. Prior to starting Anchor, Ewell owned his own construction business and built custom cars, but an
elbow injury that required surgery put an end to his days of hard work on cars. That injury six years ago ended up being the push Ewell needed to pursue ministry work. It turned out a neighbor had connections to a prison ministry and Ewell ended up working for them for two years before deciding to strike out on his own. To prepare for working with inmates he took classes offered through the other ministry he worked for and also attended Seattle Central Community College, getting a degree in chemical dependency counseling. Upon founding Anchor, Ewell began raising all of

Mary Burns, who lives on the other side of the park, near the main entrance, feels the Jenkins Creek bridge provides a nice shortcut for the public. She mentioned hope that rebuilding the bridge could increase foot traffic in the park that might scare off some of the more nefarious happenings. “The shady traffic comes and goes,� she said. “No big deal.� Covington City Manager Derek Matheson said misdemeanor crimes have been reported in the park, and, because of its naturally isolated location, is prone to issues. However, he said the new bridge design will be wide and his support and he volunteers at various jails, one of the main ones being the Kent Regional Justice Center. “Convincing people that inmates are valuable is not an easy task,� Ewell said. “You can’t clean a fish until you catch it.� Society, he said, views inmates as getting what they deserve, and often don’t want to reach out to them. “I think it’s important to love on people you don’t understand,� Ewell said. A normal day for Ewell includes getting his kids off to school, then visiting inmates. He explained that the inmates can put in requests to see him, and that’s how he knows where
to head on any given day. Ewell said that it is important to him to look at the whole picture when he meets an inmate. He gets to know them and works at gaining their respect, disciples them, and helps them get connected to housing and jobs so that they may be successful after they get out. “There’s a lot of people who get out and change their lives,� Ewell said. He explained that often former inmates will try to slip quietly back into society because of the stigma attached to being incarcerated, and as a result people often don’t realize how many former inmates do change and turn their lives
strong enough to accommodate maintenance and police vehicles. “I think the new bridge will help cut down on those misdemeanor crimes by getting more eyes in the park, but I also think that will always be a challenge just due to the nature of the park,� he said. Matheson said the grant will also cover a boardwalk in the park near Spring Lake that is failing in the same way as the pedestrian bridge did and an asphalt path that connects the boardwalk and pedestrian bridge. The previous bridge was made of timber boards and logs that rotted and collapsed into the stream after the 2010 storm and flooding. Parks and Recreation Director Scott Thomas told The Reporter at the time that kids continued to use the destroyed bridge on their way to school. Vondran said the city is going through paperwork and starting the process to hiring a consultant to do design the bridge. “We don’t know what it will look like at this point,� he said. Vondran said the city will have a better idea of what kind of environmental assessments will be needed once design planing begins. He said the project will also includes constructing an ADA accessible trail through the park. The goal is to complete the design in 2014, begin construction in early 2015 and be finished by the end of that summer. Not everyone is looking forward to completion day. “If it were up to me I’d put up a 10 foot fence so nobody could get through there,� Diambri said. “With penitentiary barbed wire on top.�

Ewell said. It’s a long process working with inmates, he added. But the work pays off, and when it does the difference is incredible. “When these guys change, they’re done going to prison,� Ewell explained. legiate softball, and another who is on her way. “I knew what caliber of kids we had at that point and potentially where they were going to go,” said Tahoma head coach Tom Milligan. “It doesn’t surprise me seeing what they are doing.” Emily Miller played two years of Division I ball at Towson University before transferring last year to Utah Valley University as a junior. She was a co-captain of the Tigers her sophomore year, the school’s second youngest ever captain. “It was awesome,” she said. “I got to play a lot of big schools. It is a full time job. A lot of the friendships
I created will be life long.” Milligan said that while earning the college degree is of utmost importance, participating in sport helps build relationships with teammates and other players all across the country. “That’s kind of what makes it fun,” he said. Miller agreed, saying the busy sports schedule helped her grow as a person. Now that she is out of the game, she feels the energy missing from her life. “I miss it like crazy, every day,” she said. “I plan on coaching at some point. Cat-face got your tomatoes? This is a condition where the blossom end of a tomato or squash will crack and rot. The third week of June is when this problem often begins. Cat-facing is caused by irregular watering, which results in a lack of calcium available to the tomato. So here’s a tip: Take an empty, two-liter pop bottle and use a push pin to poke six holes into the bottom and sides of the plastic. Now dig a hole next to your tomato, squash or cucumber plant and sink the bottle into the hole so at least half of it is buried. Fill the buried bottle with water and the surrounding
stalk when vigorous shoots emerge from below ground. Follow the new canes and dig into the soil if you must to cut out the shoots at their source. If you don’t see any yellow blooms at all this summer than perhaps you have already lost the battle. Either dig out this wild rose or learn to love the small blooms and mildew-prone foliage of the invader. Q: I made a cute herb garden by planting herb plants into an old dresser with drawers. It is outside on a covered patio. The mint plants look great but the basil looks wilted with the lower leaves turning yellow. I water the basil and it still looks wilted. -ing two people. The man prosecutors believed to be the lead robber, Melvin Charles Slaughter, 41, was sentenced in April to 14 years in prison for the robbery. Slaughter’s associate, Ferdinand Clay, 32, of Seattle, was sentenced on June 6 to 12 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Clay was shot in the face, neck and hip but recovered from his wounds. According to a U.S. Attorney’s Office press release, at sentencing, U.S. District Judge James L. Robart said, “This was a shootout‌ The sentences for the robbers are much longer, but you bear some responsibility for the decision to sell drugs and have guns.â€? Robart noted that even after the robbery, Loken continued to grow marijuana and purchased an additional handgun. “This is not someone who has gained wisdom from the experience,â€? Robart said in the release. According to the release, Loken was able free himself following the robbery and grabbed a gun from under his mattress. He raced out the front door and started firing – hitting one robber and wounding a woman
who was driving a car associated with the robbers. Police said the woman was not aware that she was involved in a drug rip-off. Both people survived their injuries. The robbers sped away and tossed bloodied items from the car, including some of the stolen firearms, which were recovered by police along the highway. Loken claimed to be a grower for medical marijuana dispensaries, but later admitted that his marijuana manufacturing was in violation of state and federal law, according to the release. Loken pleaded guilty in December 2013 to manufacturing marijuana and discharge of a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime. “This defendant brought gunfire and danger to a quiet neighborhood,� said U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan in the press release. “He is not alone. We are seeing an alarming increase in violence related to the marijuana trade. Guns and drugs are a dangerous and illegal mix. Those that bring that danger to our neighborhoods will face a dear price.�

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS EARN MONEY BY RECYCLING Glacier Park Elementary students earned thousands of dollars and prizes for their school by collecting and recycling the drink pouches they use at home and in the lunchroom. The Maple Valley students reached the third level of TerraCycle and Capri Sun’s Drink Pouch BrigadeŽ milestone contest by collecting more than 40,000 drink pouches, according to a press release from TerraCycle, an international upcycling and recycling company. For their accomplishment, the school earned 50 TerraCycle wristbands and a vinyl banner announcing their achievement. The students also earned more than $3,000 for their school. The Drink Pouch BrigadeŽ is a free recycling program that

rewards people for collecting and sending their waste to TerraCycleŽ to be recycled or upcycled. The Milestone Program began in September 2013 when Capri Sun added prizes for collecting certain amounts. “The Milestone Program is meant to inspire individuals and organizations to collect more waste while receiving prizes for their achievements,� said Tom Szaky, CEO of TerraCycle, in the release. “It is rewarding to see the students and administration get so involved in making this work. It’s an incredible achievement to have kept so many pouches out of the waste stream.�
TAHOMA SUPERINTENDENT AWARDED GOLDEN MAPLE LEAF AWARD The Maple Valley City Council presented Tahoma School District Superintendent Mike Maryanski with the annual Golden Maple Leaf award at the school district’s board meeting on Tuesday night. In addition, they proclaimed June 10 Mike Maryanski Day and Maryanski was grand marshal of the Maple Valley Days parade on June 14. Maryanski will be retiring at the end of June after spending his entire career with the district.
