It took just one year of Relay for Life to hook the Leverton family. In support of Marty Leverton, a Renton police officer who was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer in July of 2012, Marty’s wife, Jennifer, and two children helped take this year’s local cause to new places. Close to 1,000 people attended the Relay for Life of Black Diamond, Covington and Maple Valley at the Tahoma High School on June 7th and 8th, according to Jennifer Leverton, co-chair of the event. A total of 54 teams with 414 registered participants lined the track to “celebrate, remember and fight back against cancer.” Sixty survivors registered and walked the opening survivor lap. The Relay missed its goal of raising $100,000 but collected more than $84,000 for the American Cancer Society. “I’m exhausted but it went really well,” Jennifer Leverton said. After first taking part in the event in 2013, Jennifer said last year’s organizers saw how much passion and support she brought to the event and gave her increased responsibility. “I was very surprised,” Jennifer said. “Last year being our first year, Team Marty grew so big… we had 52 people my first year… It was fun for me and something to do and get my mind off what [ more RELAY page 6 ]

The county will begin closing its Roads Maintenance Facility located at Summit Place, also known as the Donut Hole, this year. The city and the county are in the final phases of completing the annexation of the Donut Hole property — which is currently part of unincorporated King County — into MAPLE the city of Maple VALLEY Valley. “It’s been sort of an ongoing saga since I was first elected to council nine years ago,” King County Councilman Reagan Dunn said of the Donut Hole. The Donut Hole is 54 acres of unincorporated land within the urban growth boundary off Kent-Kangley Road Southeast and Southeast 228th Street that is home to nine holes of Elk Run Golf Course, a stand of trees and the county’s 13-acre roads maintenance facility. Mayor Dave Gordon may need to wait a little longer than usual to order paper clips, as the Black Diamond City Council unanimously adopted a resolution June 5 that requires a second signature for any and all purchases made with city money. The resolution requires that one member of the Finance Committee sign off on all contracts for nonbudgeted goods and services costing $7,500 or less and prebudgeted contracts for goods and services up to $15,000. In the process, the council repealed the previous resolution, described as “ineffective,� that allowed the mayor to approve all contracts and purchases without any other authorization. The Finance Committee currently consists of councilwomen Janie Edelman and Carol Benson, but can change every year. Following the meeting, Gordon told The Reporter
that he was “disappointed� in the resolution because it lacks provisions for emergencies and also requires signatures for everything — from a box of paperclips or packet of paper to major expenses. Gordon gave an example of a late night sewer pump failure that will now require more time and hassle to get resolved. Even a test run for buying a new printer became a hassle, he said. “There should be a reasonable amount that doesn’t require a second signature,� Gordon said. “We’ve literally locked and keyed the money. In case of emergencies there could be problems.� Finance Director May Miller had a different perception on the resolution, saying this change only pertains to professional service, contract situations. She said she was not concerned about the doublesigning, as she didn’t “really see where there will be any situations where will need to use it.� “We don’t contract for

While the long-term financial concerns for the city of Maple Valley remain unchanged, city Finance Director Shawn Hunstock shared some positive shortterm news with the City Council Monday night. “I’ve never seen this before,” Hunstock told the council when he reached the line item for Lake Wilderness Golf Course in his report — a line that for the first time wasn’t in the red. “We’re currently projecting a surplus for the golf course.” The golf course is projected to have a surplus of $49,022. City Manager David Johnston attributed the positive swing to the good
golfing weather this spring. Hunstock advised caution in expectations of the golf course. “I wouldn’t bet a lot of money on that,” he said. Also on a positive note, higher than expected sales tax revenue and increased permit activity put the city revenues slightly ahead of budget. On the broader forecast for the year, Hunstock reported higher than anticipated revenues, cutbacks and expenditure savings, meaning the year end deficit for the general fund now projects to be smaller. In the budget for 2014, which was approved in December, the 2014 General Fund Deficit was estimated to be $600,385. About $100,000 was added to that in the first quarter, but at the end

MAPLE VALLEY RESIDENTS INVITED TO ATTEND OPEN HOUSE Members of the Maple Valley community are being asked to provide comments and ideas to the city of Maple Valley Parks and Recreation Commission that will help guide future development recommendations for two city owned park properties in Maple Valley that are undeveloped on June 25. The Commission will discuss what to do with two specific park properties: the “Henry’s Switch” site, located at Hwy 169 and SE 288th ST., and the “216th ST/276th St.” site, located at the intersection of 216th Ave SE and SE 276th St., which were purchased by the city for future park development more than a decade ago.
That essentially means there is a line showing how much the city wants and needs to keep in reserve for good financial practices, as the city’s general fund — which has largely been funded by revenues from residential development — decreases as the city approaches build out. Black holes are still a mystery
Science is not a compilation of a few isolated minds with grandiose ideas, but rather an accumulation of the work of many scientists, working independently, over decades or centuries. Black holes are a strong example of such a scientific struggle. Because they cannot be seen, science argued their very existence from the 1600s until man landed on the moon in 1969. The saying, “What goes up, must come down,” seems to rule our daily lives. Even the strongest athletes cannot throw something up so fast that it does not eventually come down. Scientists, however, wondered if it was possible to move something so fast that it would escape Earth’s gravity. With Sir Isaac Newton’s creation of calculus he was able to use his new math to demonstrate that any object could escape gravity if it was going fast enough. In the 1660s he calculated that an object fired in the air would need a starting velocity of 25,000 mph to escape earth’s gravity. Two hundred and fifty years later, Edwin Hubble used observation to prove the correctness of Newton’s calculations. For 40 years scientists agreed that light’s infinite speed would allow it to escape any gravitational force. Edmond Halley and John Mitchell, however, disagreed. They had observed that stars seemed to be orbiting something that could not be seen. Clearly, they argued, there must be something so massive that nothing could escape its gravity, even light, explaining why it wasn’t visible. They argued that one did not have to see something directly to know it was there; just as one would know someone had been on a beach even if one could not see them by the footprints they left — the orbiting stars being the footprints. The scientific community disregarded Halley and Mitchell for the next century; they believed Guest Columnist

Letters to the editor Break the cycle of poverty I am a seventh grade student from Cedar River Middle School. In class, we have been studying global citizenship and have learned a great deal about child labor. Millions of children around the world as young as 10 have to work in difficult jobs, missing out on their childhood to get enough money to live. Some kids work without getting paid at all, also working more than 12 hours a day. These jobs can be very dangerous, putting children at a risk. There are multiple different problems linked to child labor. The work keeps children from going to school, so they are not getting a sufficient education enough to be successful in life. This leads to something called the cycle of poverty. The cycle of poverty is when kids grow up poor without an education, then they grow up poor, raise a family and their kids will basically have the same life. The only way to break the cycle of poverty is to give kids education. Another problem is that the jobs kids

About 100 years later, Einstein theorized that light had a fixed speed that everything could be measured against; this was his theory of relativity. If light had a finite speed, then enough gravity would prevent light from escaping. An object with enough gravity would be invisible, but could be detected by the orbit of items around it, just as Halley and Mitchell had argued over a century earlier. Over the last 150 years, additional observational and mathematical evidence confirmed and expanded upon these ideas. Contrary to science fiction and popular belief, black holes do not gallivant around the universe, consuming people, planets, airplanes and stars alike, but, rather, remain where they are. If our sun were to form a black hole, Earth would be in no danger (although humans would, since the lack of heat, light and energy would kill us very quickly), but would continue orbiting like usual, along with every other planet in our solar
system. The only difference would be that the light from the sun (now a black hole) would no longer escape, meaning that no other body outside the black hole’s gravitational field would be visible. Were something previously not in its gravitational pull to enter the black hole (a comet, asteroid, star, etc.); it would never be seen again. What occurs inside the black hole is a complete mystery, with nothing but loose, poorly supported theories to answer the question: an enduring challenge for future generations of physicists worldwide. The process of science was best described when Sir Isaac Newton, following his recognition for many scientific achievements, explained, “I can only see so far, because I stand upon the shoulders of giants.” His statement acknowledged that science is slowly developed over many centuries by the contributions, both large and small, of many different independently working scientists. Even the greatest scientist could make little progress without the assistance of previous scientific achievement.

Kids can lose their personality from working all day, and are also shy from only knowing their life at work. But knowing about these problems won’t help fix it. So what can we do about it? As one of the main causes of child labor is poverty, we can donate money to poor families so they can hopefully take their kids away from their jobs. If we donate, families can have the sufficient funds to send their kids to school. Nonprofit organizations also help children that are forced to work. You can help these organizations and help them stop child labor. Another way that we are solving this problem is by the International Labor Organization. The ILO makes conventions to help this child labor problem. For example, convention number 182 outlaws the worst forms of child labor like slavery or debt bondage (families giving away their children to pay off a debt, forcing the child to work until the debt is paid off ). We can support the ILO to help child labor go down in this world. As you can see, child labor is a terrible thing in this world, and we should try our best to stop it.

YarrowBay files suit against Black Diamond Kirkland developer YarrowBay has filed a civil complaint against the city of Black Diamond over the city’s plan to build future government facilities. The court document claimed the plan contains “fundamental errors in analysis” and violates The Villages and Lawson Hills development agreements between YarrowBay and the city. Black Diamond Lawson Partners LP and Black Diamond Village Partners LP – known collectively as YarrowBay - filed a summons May 22 in King County Superior Court asking the court for a declaration judgment on the city’s $48 million government facilities mitigation plan, which was adopted in April. Though the city has accepted the plan, it has not yet taken a step to adopt the mitigation fee recommendations. According to the documents, YarrowBay asked to “clarify rights and obligations” under the city’s government facilities plan ordinance. YarrowBay

The motion to dismiss stated YarrowBay filed 39 days after the council’s enactment of the ordinance, when it should have been filed within 30 days after enactment. A mitigation fee is a one-time payment assessed on each unit of new development; the city uses the money to ease the impact of the development on government facilities. The city hired the consulting firm MAKERS in April 2013 to perform a study on the city’s government facilities needs and the findings were presented in February. The study addressed City Hall, the police department, municipal
court and public works facilities. YarrowBay claims that the city’s plan applies a methodology that calculates the size and costs of constructing government facilities that are purportedly needed to meet projected future demand given the city’s future population projections. The plan includes fees to be imposed on new development within the city, such as the development within YarrowBay’s master plan developments. The complaint claims that the plan contains “fundamental errors in analysis,” including a “gap analysis” that proposes to impose fees on new development within YarrowBay’s developments that will be used to “correct existing deficiencies in the city’s facilities.” “Requiring new development to pay mitigation fees to correct existing deficiencies is illegal because such mitigation is not tied to the specific impacts of new development,” the complaint stated. It’s since grown dramatically. More than 4 million cancer survivors, friends and family take part in the overnight event each year, with the goal of keeping at least one team member walking at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of the fundraising prior to the event, but some also hold creative fundraisers at their campsites during Relay. The Relay season doesn’t officially end until Aug. 31. Jennifer is certainly not alone in her enthusiasm for the event — around the community or even in her own home.

Johnson, in his second year as Tahoma’s head coach, had just six seniors on his roster, but guided the Bears to the Division I SPSL/Narrows Conference crown. Kaiea Higa has an impressive swing. And not just for a 10 year old. Or for a girl. But for anybody. “The skills are from my mom, strength from my dad,” said Kaiea, a 5-foot slugger. “I’m not gonna argue with that,” responded her dad, Grant, on his way to shag fly balls in the outfield. Kaiea is Maple Valley’s best chance at playing in this year’s Major League All Star Game, as she will be participating in the MLB’s Pitch, Hit & Run Team Championship on Sunday, June 15, after the Seattle Mariners game. She will be introduced on the field prior to the game and will compete afterwards. The national skills program is for boys and girls aged 7-13. It lets the youth showcase their pitching, hitting and running abilities. Kaiea, a student at Glacier Park Elementary who plays fastpitch for the Auburn Acers 10U team, won the local Pitch, Hit & Run competition in Kent and then took the Sectionals contest crown in Puyallup on Memorial Day. “She even had higher scores than the 13-14-year-old boys,” Grant said.
If Kaiea finishes with a score in the top three, of 90, in her age bracket, she will be flown to the MLB All-Star game in Minneapolis for a chance to participate in the National Finals and the All-Star game festivities. Like a poised veteran dealing with the media, Kaiea said she is excited to make it this far and making it to the national round would be “just a bonus.” “I was kinda nervous until mom told me it’s just for fun,” Kaiea said of the first competition. “It’s everything I know how to do.” Kaiea’s mom Michelle, who played collegiate softball for Oregon State from 1992-95, said Kaiea only attempted the competition because there was no tournament to play in over that weekend. “She won all of the events: hitting, pitching and running,” Michelle said. “She advanced to the Sectionals and did even better.” Kaiea wears size 10 shoes and is one of, if not the, tallest person in her grade. As she and her mom play catch, the ball makes a firm popping sound. There’s power and skill behind each throw. “She’s definitely better than me,” Michelle said. “At this age,” Kaiea adds modest-

Grant spent June 6-7 at the Master’s America’s Strongest Man competition in Indiana, where he finished fifth out of 10. He has returned in time to cheer his daughter on from the stands when she is introduced on the field. Some

giraffe – and poke the stems right into the soil to root. 5. Large lawns are expensive to maintain. Add a split rail fence to partition off a section of the lawn, let the weeds grow tall and bloom and call it a wildflower meadow. The bees will thank you. 6. Make your own slug-killing spray – put one-third ammonia and one-third water into a recycled Windex spray bottle. Spray this directly onto those tiny slugs that appear on your plants right after it rains. You can also use this mixture to wash the windows. (Bonus: The ammonia converts to nitrogen and feeds your plants.)
7. Never pay for plastic or other weed-blocking materials. Newspaper at least five pages thick and cardboard under wood mulch works better and is safer for the environment. 8. Make dirt-cheap pathways, patios and play areas by laying cedar chips on top of newspaper. Cedar chips are also called playground chips and the cedar repels fleas, keeps down weeds and smells great. Cedar repels water so don’t use cedar shavings or chips around your plants. Hardwood chips are better for mulching around plants. 9. The ball is marked where it lands on the fly, not where it rolls. Kaiea loves to hit and follows a specific routine: letting the bat role down her arm and shifting her
weight, focusing on the ball sitting on the tee. She lines up her feet and considers the angle of her hands. Her form is quite remarkable for a 10 year old, with every swing stinging the ball right back up the middle. Michelle recently pitched to her daughter and saw the ball screaming right back towards her. “I thought I was gonna
cry; I seriously thought you broke my hand,” Michelle said to Kaiea. Michelle said the boys winner in the 13-year-old division in Sectionals struck the ball 188 feet. Kaiea, in the 9- and 10-year-old group, belted hers 166 feet. “She crushed it,” Michelle said. The running portion measures speed in a sprint from the start line at second
base, touching third base and finishing at home plate. The girls run 120 feet, while the boys sprint 160 feet. Kaiea may not be the fastest, but Michelle says she is “a smart runner,” who is adept at maximizing her time. For making it this far, Kaiea will receive a hat, Tshirt, Team Championship award and two Mariners tickets.
Safeco Field is intimidating, but Kaiea still rates her chances of moving on at an eight out of 10. She is more excited than nervous. Michelle is proud that her daughter is not only having fun, but also excelling. “It’s exciting to see that she loves the sport,” she said. “She’s having fun. The main thing is we want to keep her busy.”
