GRADUATION DAY

Humor, home marks momentous day Ben Watanabe / The Record

South Whidbey High School seniors stand to recognize retiring art teacher Don Wodjenski during their graduation ceremony June 7.

By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record For such an emotionally charged day, a watershed moment for a hundred or so South Whidbey High School seniors, the dominant expression was humor. The four valedictorians and pair of student speakers worked plenty of jokes into their speeches Saturday, June 7, inside a packed Erickson Gymnasium. Jack Hood, a valedictorian, worked a set worthy of the Laff Hole in Seattle. In his soft, nearly monotone talking style, Hood spoke of being motivated by his younger sister who

would criticize him when he wasn’t studying. “Being called lazy does wonders for your work ethic,” he said, prompting the crowd to chuckle. His hearty laughter-inducing jokes came when he gave a peek into his family life. Hood said his speech would ramble, but it would be like a bag of trail mix, or in his case, homemade trail mix that replaced M&Ms with chocolate chips. The M&M simile was used throughout his speech in encouraging his peers to think in peace without distraction while walking in the woods, a practice in which he frequently engages. “Here comes my second piece of advice. Write it down or

you’ll forget it,” said Hood, letting the crowd lean in and wait several seconds for the next lesson. “That’s it: write it down or you’ll forget it.” Before Hood had the crowd laughing, valedictorian Sydney Ackerman used another simile of maturing like Frodo Baggins and his fellow Hobbits in “The Lord of the Rings.” “When we were freshmen, we were like Hobbits in the Shire,” she said, adding that by 10th grade they were like Frodo at the Council of Elrond realizing their journey had SEE GRADUATION, A14

Divers recover mystery anchor off Ledgewood, Vancouver link possible By JUSTIN BURNETT South Whidbey Record

Diver Joe Chang, a Mount Vernon resident, speaks with the barge crew following the raising of an ancient anchor on Monday.

First they cheered, then they wept. The long-submerged anchor believed connected with Captain George Vancouver and his famed exploration of the Pacific Northwest more than 200 years ago touched down on the deck of a barge off Ledgewood late Monday. It was a moment of joy, but also one of closure, as it marked the end of six years of

research, toil and obsession. “I’m pretty overcome right now,” said a teary-eyed Scott Grimm, moments after the anchor was recovered. “It’s been a long time.” The anchor was discovered in 40 feet of water by Doug Monk, a diver and ship captain, in 2008. Teaming up with Grimm, they have spent the years since trying to identify the relic, jumping through the hoops of establishing legal ownership and navigating the state’s lengthy permit process.

They contend it’s the stream anchor lost on June 9, 1792, from the HMS Chatham, the 80-foot survey brig that accompanied Vancouver and the HMS Discovery on the famed exploration of Puget Sound. Recovering the relic, exactly 222 years after the Chatham’s anchor was lost, was no easy task. Small teams of divers spent most of the day working in tough conditions. SEE ANCHOR, A10

Concrete gets green with garden planting Many hands made light work of the Second Street garden features in Langley over the weekend. A total of 48 volunteers joined the Langley Main Street Association (LMSA) to plant the new gardens along Second Street, redesigned to be more pedestrian friendly with wider sidewalks, more planters and a central plaza crosswalk. The 18 new garden beds, stretching from the corner of Anthes Avenue to the Langley

Library on Cascade Avenue, are now filled with 1,500 plants, shrubs and ground cover. According to a news release from LMSA, Cathy Waymire Rooks, a Langley resident and owner of Inspired Gardens, chose plants that would add year-round interest, bold color, contrast and continuity. Plants include digiplexis “illumination flame,” a cross between common foxglove and the Canary Island foxglove with pink and orange flowers, Rooks said, and

agastache or hyssop, a droughttolerant plant in raspberry and apricot nectar colors that hummingbirds enjoy. Dwarf conifers and heathers that change color in winter were also planted. Pumpkins plants were added to the larger beds to continue the edible landscape theme created at Langley City Hall last year, which won a State Excellence Award for creating a greener community. A mutual agreement was made between the City of Langley and LMSA to plant and maintain the new Second Street landscape.

“When we saw what the original landscape architects had in mind [for Second Street] we knew we had to make the plantings unique and exciting,” Rooks said in the news release. “Even though they have some nice streetscapes for other towns, we wanted more than nice.” Volunteers planted all of the new garden features on Second Street except the rain garden area by the Langley Village and the trees, which were completed by SRV Construction. Volunteers came from all over South Whidbey, including city officials Mayor Fred McCarthy, and council members, Rene Neff and Jim Sundberg. Enough assistance was offered that only two days were needed instead of the planned three-day event. Two more areas will be plant-

ed by LMSA at the Good Cheer thrift store and the Langley Library. LMSA will continue to water the new garden beds and the hanging baskets that were added this spring, but some volunteers took unofficial ownership of the beds they planted. Janet Ploof, the LMSA president, was thankful for the volunteers and welcomed their requests to keep the beds weeded. “Wouldn’t it be fun to have an individual or business owner adopt a bed for one season,” Ploof said. “Community ownership is what makes Langley so remarkable.” Those interested in adopting a bed should email mainstreet@ whidbey.com

South Whidbey welcomes state’s newest ferry, the Tokitae By NOAH HAGLUND Herald Writer CLINTON — To many people here on Whidbey Island, Washington state’s newest ferry is more than just a ship. The Tokitae, as it’s called, is the fruit of their labor in a local shipyard. It promises riders slightly shorter ferry lines. And it’s a floating awareness campaign for endangered resident orca whales. Hundreds of admirers stopped by the Tokitae, docked at the Clinton Ferry Terminal, for a welcoming ceremony on Sunday. “Now we are breathing life into the steel and giving it a soul and making it a ship,” interim state ferries director Capt. George Capacci said. Transportation officials and shipbuilders offered up applause lines to an audience gathered on the car deck. Members of the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community and Samish Indian Nation performed blessings. The Tokitae is scheduled to start sailing this summer, as part of the state’s 23-ferry fleet. The $144 million ship was christened in March at Vigor Industrial in Seattle. While Vigor built the hull, much of the structure above deck took shape at Nichols Brothers Boat Builders in Freeland, a short drive from the Clinton Ferry Terminal. Numerous other contractors had pieces of the job. All told, about 500 workers participated. Walk up the steps from the Tokitae’s car deck, not yet reddened by rust or blackened by exhaust, and you start to notice differences from the current fleet. The angle of the stairs is more gentle, making for an easier climb. The stairwell gives ample space for people

As a fire-proofing measure, the corridor is walled off from the car decks. The new ferry promises to be more efficient, easier to maneuver, safer and cheaper to maintain than any others in the state fleet, said Chris Morgan, a vice president with Vigor. The 144-car Olympic Class vessel will replace the Cathlamet, which is being moved to the Vashon Island route so the state can retire a ferry built in the 1950s. “We build these vessels for a 60-year life cycle,” Capacci said. “It will allow us to replace some of the vessels that are 60 years old.” The Tokitae is the first of three planned vessels in the new Olympic Class. The Tokitae took two years to build. The next boat, the Samish, is under construction and scheduled to be finished in spring 2015. The third boat was funded just this year.

The Tokitae has two diesel engines that crank out 6,000 horsepower. At 362 feet, 3 inches long, it has space for up to 1,500 people. Mukilteo is getting the Tokitae because more cars travel on that route than any other in the system — more than 2 million last year, according to state transportation officials. The new vessel will hold 20 more cars than the 124-car Cathlamet. A Whidbey Island couple in their 50s stood in line to tour one of the Tokitae’s two wheelhouses on Sunday. “We really do appreciate it and what it’s going to do for us on the island,” Steve Sloan said. They hope the added car capacity will cut down on time spent waiting to drive on. “We sat in a two-hour ferry line yesterday,” Tammi Sloan said. The Tokitae’s wider main tunnel also will accommodate

more trucks or motor homes. Open passenger decks at each end of the new ferry will be larger, each about half the size of a regulation tennis court, said Broch Bender, a state ferries spokeswoman. Visitors for the Tokitae’s open house were able to tour a sun deck, which won’t be open to passengers during regular service. The ferry system can only afford to staff the runs with a 12-person crew, given current passenger volumes, Bender said. Using the sun deck would require two more crew members. “Initially it will be closed,” Bender said. “If more funding arises, we will open it.” The Tokitae’s name comes from a Coast Salish greeting meaning, “nice day, pretty colors.” A state commission picked it in 2012 to honor an orca whale captured in Penn Cove off Whidbey Island. Caught in 1970, Tokitae the whale was taken to a Miami sea

Lolita is the subject of a multi-year dispute between animal rights activists and the privately owned Miami Seaquarium. Activists have petitioned the government to list her under the

Endangered Species Act. A Whidbey-based whaleadvocacy group called Orca Network suggested the ferry’s name. “She’s Lolita now, because she’s performing,” said Howard Garrett, the network’s founder. “When we bring her back, she will be Tokitae; she’ll be Lolita no more.” In a broader sense, the network hopes the new ferry’s name will raise awareness about troubled orca populations in Puget Sound. “It just opens the window to the whale’s presence in these waters so people will know they live here and appreciate that they live here and will want to help them continue to live here,” Garrett said. The Tokitae is the fourth new ferry built in six years. The three other boats — the Chetzemoka, the Salish and the Kennewick — were built after the 1920s-era Steel Electric Class boats were pulled from the water in 2007 after cracks and corrosion were found in their hulls. The 124-car Kittitas will continue as the second vessel on the Clinton-to-Mukilteo route.

NEWSLINE | WEATHER REPORT: Take in the sun today, because rain is coming Thursday and Friday.

FIRE/EMS No injuries from capsized sailboat A 14-foot Hobie sailboat on Lone Lake capsized Sunday, sending two men into the water and its 20-foot mast into the mud. No one was injured in the accident caused by strong wind gusts around 7 p.m. June 8, said South Whidbey Fire/EMS Deputy Chief Jon Beck. “There was nothing they could do,” he said. “There were some squalls, some gusts that came through there,” he added. Someone in a rowboat retrieved the men before emergency responders arrived. The boat owner used a powerboat and tried to tow the sailboat out of the mud, but the powerboat died, stranding two men on the lake

again. “It was a double rescue, basically,” Beck said. The fire protection district used its inflatable rigid dinghy with a 60 horsepower, 4-stroke Yamaha engine to slowly pull the sailboat out of the mud and back to the boat launch and repeated the towing service for the powerboat. Beck said the lake was fairly warm, and the estimated 15 minutes the men were in the lake did not pose an immediate threat of hypothermia.

Brush fire put out by bystanders A small brush fire off Highway 525 and Midvale Road was put out by bystanders Friday night. “They just stomped it out with their feet,” said South Whidbey Fire/EMS Deputy Chief Jon Beck. “It was small enough that it wasn’t much of a prob-

lem.” Beck said there were no injuries from the foursquare-foot grass fire caused by a catalytic converter that was spit out of a car’s exhaust. When it sat in the dry grass, it ignited.

SCHOOLS Report on schools’ progress coming Progress toward the South Whidbey School District’s goal of having 100 percent of graduates “college and career ready” by 2020 will be the main topic at its board meeting Friday. School improvement plan updates will be given for each of South Whidbey’s four public schools: South Whidbey Elementary School, Langley Middle School, South Whidbey Academy and South Whidbey High

School. The plans are the principals’ approach to increase student performance on metrics like standardized tests and attendance. A report on the district’s goal of having all of its graduates “college and career ready” by 2020 will be presented by Christopher Sink as well. An executive session to discuss Superintendent Jo Moccia’s evaluation, scheduled for one hour, will conclude the meeting. It has been an endof-year school district practice since Moccia was hired in 2011. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the school board meeting room at South Whidbey Elementary School, 5380 Maxwelton Road, Langley.

SOUTH END Whidbey ROV team hosts fundraiser Atlantis Inc., an under-

water remotely operated vehicle team that was the runner-up at the 2014 MATE Pacific Northwest regional competition, is holding a fundraiser Saturday, June 14, for a trip to attend the Black Sea ROV International Competition in Romania this August. Several performers will be at St. Augustine’s in-the-Woods Episcopal Church in Freeland, including dancer Melyssa Smith, the Shifty Sailors, acoustic group The Barriotiques and musician Beverly Graham. Atlantis Inc. was invited to give the opening keynote address at the competition in Constanta, Romania, after winning the Pacific Northwest regional in 2013 and receiving the “biggest bang for the buck” award for cost efficiency. The fundraiser has two options for attendance — $5 for the dinner at 5:30 p.m. and $10 for the performances at 7. There will also be a silent auction.

Community commemorates veterans at D-Day event By GRACE SWANSON South Whidbey Record Around 100 people gathered at the Langley Middle School field on Friday morning to commemorate 11 Langley High School graduates who were killed in World War II and the Korean War. It was the 70th anniversary of D-Day. The event opened with Langley Mayor Fred McCarthy acknowledging those in attendance, which included veterans, members of the American Legion, the American Legion Riders, students and staff from Langley Middle School and Island Christian Academy, City of Langley workers, and many others. Members of the Maj. Megan McClung Marine Corps League Detachment 1210 raised the American flag and a prayer was given by Pastor Darrel Wenzek. Herb Weissblum, a veteran, recited a D-Day poem he wrote, which described the events that occurred during the Allied invasion of Europe on June 6, 1944. History’s largest amphibious assault took place along 50 miles of the Normandy coast. Many died in the battle for freedom, he said. “We gather here today to salute our brave neighbors whose lives were lost,” Weissblum recited. “Fighting for our liberty on Normandy’s beaches at great human cost.” A refurbished plaque containing the names of 11 veterans from Whidbey Island was revealed during the ceremony. She was instrumental in the organization of community members and South Whidbey students in the project. The memorial had resided at the Langley Middle School for years, Kizer said. In 1955, during a Langley High School football game, the South Whidbey Veterans of Foreign Wars dedicated the Memorial Athletic Field to the high school as well as a flagpole and plaque with the names of those graduates who died in a foreign war. The high school later moved to a different location and the football team began to play on a new field. As time passed, the memory faded. In November 2006, a Navy veteran was walking his dog around Langley Middle School and encountered the flag pole. He wrote a letter to the South Whidbey Record asking who the names on the plaque belonged to and

why the memorial had fallen into such disrepair. Kizer saw his letter in the paper, which began a two-year project to restore the memorial and honor those veterans. Students from Langley Middle School interviewed family and friends of the fallen veterans. Lloyd Carter, a veteran in WWII and a school district employee, was instrumental in the research process because he knew many facts about the young men. On Nov. 12, 2008, family and friends were invited as honored guests to rededicate the plaque and flagpole to those Langley grads who gave their lives in WWII

and the Korean War. Those veterans include: Paul Applegate, Delbert Drake, Lloyd Francis, Robert Orr, Stanley Simmons, Harold Bloomquist, Robert Fiske, Ernest Moser, Thomas Poyneer, Rafael Mylly, and Charles Greenshield. Each name was read from the plaque and was met by a toll of the bell. Wenzek played “Taps,” a song gener-

ally performed at the end of a military funeral, while the flag was lowered to half-mast in remembrance of all those lost on D-Day and domestic wars. The ceremony concluded when three vintage P-51 fighter planes flew overhead. The mission of the planes on D-Day was to target German soldiers or artillery by flying low-level passes.

Anchor recovery a captivating story By KEVEN GRAVES Whether the rusty, barnacleencrusted anchor gingerly raised from the swift waters off of Whidbey Island is truly a relic of Captain George Vancouver’s expedition remains to be seen. Nonetheless, the anchor’s recovery is a story of dedication, determination, mystery and adventure. In summary, it contains all of the elements of an engaging story. From its discovery in 2008 by Doug Monk, it was an obsession for him and those working with him. Monk says he believes the anchor, which was lifted onto a barge in the waters off of Ledgewood on Central Whidbey late Monday, is from the HMS Chatham. The HMS Chatham was part of Vancouver’s fleet that explored the Pacific Northwest 222 years ago. The anchor was recorded as lost on June 9, 1792. Monk and his wife, Li Li, said they’re ready for this great adventure to come to a close. “It’s been a long project — most of our conversations end with the anchor,” Li Li told Justin Burnett, editor of the South Whidbey Record. Burnett has covered this story for months, and was aboard the boat that pulled the anchor from its murky depths this week, documenting a significant chapter in the anchor’s story. While the chapter of recovery is coming to a close, the chapter of investigation and verification is just beginning. Scott Grimm has done the most research and worked closely with Monk. He’s pored over journals and logs to establish that the anchor was lost here, not somewhere else. “I think we’re going to be vindicated,” Grimm told Burnett. There are skeptics who believe the HMS Chatham’s anchor was lost near Bellingham, red flags that indicate the anchor recovered this week is not 222 years old. “It’s an anchor; that’s my expert opinion,” said Scott Williams, an archeologist who specializes in marine recovery. Whether or not the anchor is from the Vancouver expedition, the fact is, the journey to the point of discovery was engaging and exciting. We hope that the anchor is the real deal, but even if it’s not, we will be interested in learning about its origins. There is a story that this anchor is waiting to tell. In the meantime, we are appreciative of the fact that we got to tag along in this adventure, even if vicariously. — Keven R. Graves is executive and publisher for the Whidbey News Group. Letters Response

The child you get is not always the one hoped for Editor, Such a howl of indignation has risen from Langley. Condominiums where the venerable Dog House once stood. And down the street, a sprawling threestory retail/condo complex along First Street, effectively walling off the remaining views of Saratoga Passage. But why should anyone be surprised? For years, the city has adopted an “anything for tourism” agenda: a multi-million dollar marina expansion, a $2 million tourist-friendly Second Street, and an $800,000 funicular — essentially a conveyor belt delivering tourists from Langley marina to downtown’s shops — is on the way. No price is too high to keep lowwage tourism jobs in Langley! Now Langley’s mayor is sitting on a committee that is pitching a proposal

to raze much of the fairgrounds and replace them with a $10 million “events center” to lure still more tourists. As condo developer Richard Francisco gleefully told The Record “I’m seeing some great things in Langley.” Yes, there is a great change underway — a new Langley is being born. But the city may soon find that the child you get is not always the child you were hoping for. BRIAN LOWEY Clinton

their voracious appetite is a marvel – we discover we are not libertarians. With instincts as simple as life’s ABCs they seek out the highest branch of our apple and alder and juicy plum trees – we do not give them carte blanche. MARK Thompson Road property finds buyer for $47,000 loss THE DATE By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record South Whidbey Fire/EMS is considering an offer for its 19.3-acre Thompson Road property at a $47,000 loss. District commissioners are expected to hear an update on their accepted counteroffer to sell the property for $189,000 on Thursday at their regular meeting. The district purchased the two adjoining 9.3 and 10-acre parcels in 2001 for $236,000. “They bought it during the high period when real estate was good on the island, just like everyone else did,” Chief Rusty Palmer said. “The market just isn’t there anymore.” Losing $47,000 of public money through the pending sale was not taken lightly by the South Whidbey Fire/EMS board chairman. “It is a distressing thing,” said Commissioner Kenon Simmons, chairman of the fire commissioners. “It’s something that we’ve talked about

the benefits and cons of selling it at this point.” Simmons declined to discuss why the commissioners are willing to let go of the property at a loss until it’s successfully sold, though he maintains those reasons are good ones. “There’s definitely reasons why now is a good time,” Simmons said. “But the sensitivity of us having a sale pending on this thing, I’d like to see it go through first.” Ten years after the purchase, the district tried to sell the properties once residents around the proposed location objected to it and the district reconsidered the ease of access to the highway for its emergency response vehicles. “Really, that’s what made it less desirable,” Palmer said. “We want to do what we do for fire protection, but we also want to be good neighbors.” After a year on the market, the district pulled the Thompson Road property to keep the value from plummet-

across the street. “Our goal is to make it a really nice place,” Palmer said. “My direction to the architects is we want to fit into the neighborhood. It’s not going to be a chrome-and-glass monolith in a rural area.” Other than some liability insurance and an annual timber tax of about $40 for the property, South Whidbey Fire/EMS has no expenses for the Thompson lot. But keeping the property longer to see if its value would rebound closer to its original purchase price was not an option. Palmer said the advice he received, and with which the commissioners agreed, was that it could take several more decades for the land to creep up to its purchase price. “They convinced us that properties were never going to get back to where they were,” Palmer said of the district’s real estate agents. “If you’re willing to wait 30, 40, 50 years, it might get back up there.”

ing. Last October, Palmer was advised by the district’s Coldwell Banker real estate agent, Christina Parker, also a volunteer emergency medical technician and firefighter for South Whidbey, to test the market. Palmer said there was no concern about a conflict of interest in having a district volunteer handle the transaction. Also since then, the district has scaled back its plan for the new Bayview-area combined central office and fire station. Essentially, the district is looking at building the fire station adjacent to Bayview Road with the administrative offices above it, leaving plenty of room for a future training facility elsewhere on the 4.5-acre lot. One of the benefits of the Thompson Road location was its seclusion, which meant there was little chance of it being an eyesore to passing motorists. The new location between the Bayview School and Good Cheer Food Bank, however, is a main thoroughfare with the Bayview Cash Store

Seniors set softball team’s cheery tone despite record By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record The batting average Chantel Brown put up this season is hard to believe, even for her South Whidbey head coach, Tim Collins, who fully believed in his senior first baseman and catcher. Brown, who was voted to the Cascade Conference first team for fastpitch softball, hit .558 this year. That means that more times than not when she stepped to the plate, she was going to get a base hit. For the season, Brown amassed 29 hits — 23 singles, four doubles and two triples — in 52 at-bats, 17 runs, 11 RBI and a pair of walks against, believe it or not, two strikeouts. “She really helped us out,” Collins said. “If we’d have finished a little higher in the standings, I think she would have been recognized a bit more,” he added. Numbers like that nearly garnered her a league MVP title, though that was split by Archbishop Murphy’s Alyson Matriotti and Lakewood’s Kiana Smith. Brown was far from alone as a South Whidbey representative in

Anne Madsen, a junior catcher, was voted to the second team after compiling a .409 batting average. As the catcher for a firstyear high school pitcher thrust into the prime duty, Madsen was

RBI and hit .396. “She did a great job at the plate,” Collins said. In fact, the whole team hit well. South Whidbey recorded a .339 batting average this season, though their ability to drive in base runners fell short. Limiting other teams’ scoring was a regular struggle, and South Whidbey allowed 11.4 runs per game overall while scoring 4.3 — a recipe for a losing record. The Falcons finished in last place in the league with a 3-15 record and were 4-17 overall, including a pair of District 1 playoff losses. Tallying more losing streaks than overall wins meant it was a long season for the whole team, and especially four-year varsity seniors Haley Viers and Brown. “It was rough losing so many games and the way we lost them,” said Viers, an honorable mention nomination to the all-league teams. “I just had to focus on having fun and enjoying the company of my team, getting to know all the girls.” “It would have been nice to win more, but I still had a lot of fun,” she added. Having Viers and Brown as

team leaders who had played for two other coaches during their Falcon careers was an important part of the team’s chemistry, Collins said. He praised them for recruiting some younger girls to join the team, even a few who had not played organized softball before, to bolster the program and add depth to its roster. “Their leadership, their positive attitudes — they’ve been through the grind before and didn’t let the losses affect their enthusiasm for playing the game,” Collins said. “That was their most important aspect of the season. It’s easy to get caught up in the number of losses. I was impressed by their work ethic and their attitudes and their hustle. They didn’t dog it, they didn’t quit.” Viers said the most memorable game this season was the Falcons’ victory over the perennial power Archbishop Murphy Wildcats. South Whidbey rallied to take the lead in the first game of the series and went on to win 8-5. “We felt we were the underdogs and weren’t gonna come back,” Viers said. “Then we beat them and it boosted our confidence.”

The South Whidbey Little League Cubs fought their way through the consolation bracket and a mercy-rule loss to win the Andrade Tournament in Oak Harbor this weekend. lier loss, a 14-3 clobbering, to the Anacortes team in a pitchers’ duel that ended with South Whidbey winning 2-1. South Whidbey used a thorough rotation of pitchers for the win including Brent Bachelor, Ethan Petty, Thomas Simms and Drew Fry. Having split their first two games, Anacortes had to play one more decisive championship game. Fry pitched through six innings before being relieved by Simms to preserve the 8-4 victory and tournament title. Simms threw the final out not as

the pitcher, but as a fielder taking a cutoff throw for home and redirecting it to Elijah Sergeant at second base for the tag out. The Anacortes player, who had been injured in an earlier game, stayed on the field for a few minutes, prompting both teams to take a knee. Eventually, he walked off the field. Filled with complex characters and depictions of people at both their best and worst, “The Tin Roof Blowdown” is not only an action-packed crime thriller, but a poignant story of courage and sacrifice that critics are already calling Burke’s best work.

In the end, it was painstakingly pulled free with a crane that pulled from an angle that would free it without damage. “I’m just happy we didn’t break it,â€? said Monk, a man of rough hands and Carhartt coveralls. “It made it worth the extra trouble.â€? He said he was “ecstaticâ€? to get the anchor up in one piece, but that Monday’s successful raising was a relief in more ways than one. While there are many more chapters yet to be written about this anchor, Monk is ready for this adventure to come to an end. “I’d say I’m about done,â€? he laughed. And that was music to his wife’s ears. Li Li has been the consummate supporter, but she is looking forward to talking about something else for a change. “It’s been a long project ‌ most of our conversations end with the anchor,â€? said Li, with a smile. For many others, however, the mystery of the anchor is just getting started. Where it will end up after it’s restored, possible squabbles over own-

ership, and of course from what vessel this anchor was lost are all future topics of discussion. The authenticity of the anchor’s origins, which flies in the face of conventional belief that it was lost near Bellingham, has sparked debate and will likely continue to do so. Indeed, before the boats of Monday’s recovery had returned to port, experts on board were already speculating. A few expressed certainty that it is the Chatham’s anchor, others quiet doubt and some offered guarded opinions. “It’s an anchor; that’s my expert opinion, said Scott Williams, an archeologist

The team could get “lucky and find an embossment of the British navy on the anchor, but it’s considered a long shot. research, Williams said. But even if it’s not what some hope, it’s still a very old anchor and it has a story to tell, said Bob Mester, a marine recovery expert and owner of Underwater Admiralty Sciences. “It’s a wonderful find and nothing should detract from that, Mester said. The search for the Chatham’s anchor has captured the imagination of historians for years, including Mester, and news that this could be the same object has sparked countless discussions over its authenticity. That alone is valuable, Mester said. As for Grimm, he says there is probably no way to know for sure, with absolute certainty, that this is the Chatham’s anchor. However, he believes his research, some of which he has yet to reveal, will make a case too compelling to challenge. “It’s a great feeling, said Grimm, gazing at the barnacle-encrusted anchor. “I think we’re going to be vindicated.

Birds to study The Whidbey Audubon Society is presenting a free event where people can hold specimens of preserved birds found on Whidbey Island. By RON NEWBERRY Whidbey News Group On any given day, Robin Llewellyn can reach into the freezer compartment beneath her refrigerator and pull out a frozen surprise. Sometimes, it’ll be a bag of cranberries, sugar snap peas or free-range chicken. Other times, it’ll be something altogether different. “I have a pintail duck,” Llewellyn said as she checked her freezer inventory Monday. “It’s very heavy.” Llewellyn continued the search. “I have a goldfinch, a male,” she said. “I have a varied thrush. Here’s another couple of birds. I didn’t know I had all these in here. Here’s a house wren. A spotted towhee. I have a barn owl. What else do I have in here?” Llewellyn, who lives in Greenbank, can’t remember the last time she worried about sharing freezer space with dead birds. It’s part of the territory that comes with being program chair of the Whidbey Audubon Society, a role she’s held for nine years. With this title, she also eagerly embraces the desig-

nation as chief bird specimen collector on Whidbey Island, which explains the contents of her freezer. “I’m so far past thinking of them as being something that’s icky,” Llewellyn said. The Whidbey Audubon Society has assembled an enormous collection of dead birds, which the group uses to educate the public. Every two years, the preserved birds go on display for birding enthusiasts and other curious people to examine closely and to handle. The next opportunity will take place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, June 14, inside the barn at Greenbank Farm. The free event, called “Bird in Hand,” also will include a live raptor or two on the arms of their trainers. Llewellyn came up with the idea to let birders get an intimate look at dead birds seven years ago. The idea seemed to have merit since many bird enthusiasts go through great effort in the field to get as close as possible to the birds they study. But it took hundreds of hours from Audubon Society volunteers for the event to

To get the birds ready for the exhibit, volunteers have had to gain an education in skinning, preserving, pinning and mounting birds. That expertise was gained from Matt Klope, an Oak Harbor taxidermist and U.S. Naval wildlife biologist who taught volunteers the tedious process of preparing the birds. “It’s so important that you get upclose and personal,” Klope said of the Audubon program. “You can look through spotting scopes to see things like feather patterns and bill length. But now you’ve got them in your hands.” The Whidbey Audubon Society is only able to keep and display the dead birds because of a federal permit that allows the group to use the collection for educational purposes, Klope said. Klope said he gets calls all the time from people wanting him to stuff an owl or hawk that was found on the side of the road. Federal law, under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, prohibits that. “I can’t accept a bird without a permit,” he said. “It has to be for educational purposes.” The Whidbey Audubon collection consists of about 450 individual specimens

Nearly all of the birds were found on Whidbey, often casualties of windows, cats or cars. When a dead bird is discovered, members are told to freeze the specimen in a plastic bag containing a piece of paper that records who found the bird, the date it was found and where it was discovered. Ultimately, the specimen is handed off to Llewellyn and eventually winds up at Klope’s Whidbey Island Taxidermy shop in Oak

Harbor where preservation takes place. The Whidbey Audubon Society’s collection is considered museum-quality, prepared by specially trained members such as Sarah Schmidt of Coupeville. Select museums have access to the collection. And although the collection includes various species of owls, hawks and falcons, federal law prohibits the inclusion of eagles. “All eagles go to the National Eagle Repository in Colorado,” Klope said. Klope keeps the collection at his home shop. When he

retires as a biologist, he’ll devote his full attention to preserving wildlife specimens and one day would like to open an interpretive center with stuffed birds on display. Until then, he and Whidbey Audubon will continue to build on their bird collection, which currently represents about half of the bird species on the island. And Llewellyn will continue to surprise her grandchildren with the things she stores in her freezer. “They know how it is at grandma’s house,” she said.

GRADUATION CONTINUED FROM A1

much more ahead of it. As upperclassmen facing Advanced Placement courses in English, chemistry and U.S. history, the path to graduation was more perilous. “There are days when survival is the only goal … just as when the Fellowship was in Helm’s Deep.” The lesson, she said, was that she and her 106 peers need no longer bide their time for the next step. “If we’re always waiting for the next thing to be finished, we will always be waiting,” Ackerman said. Being able to count on “the rock” as their home was a consistent point made by the students. Faculty-choice speaker Nick French told his peers they were part of South Whidbey, no matter what. “You are always a part of this class, this school, and this community,” he said. Kiana Henny, one of the valedictorians, touched on the small-town nature of South Whidbey as well. “Where else do you stop at a traffic light and see your best friend in the car next to you?” she said. Student-choice speaker Ben Nerison, son of Langley Middle School principal Eric Nerison, rattled off several stories of growing up, including some PG-13 moments like his first kiss and getting into trouble. “This is the only school that lets you be you,” he said, later making a joke about retired physical education teacher-turned-school board director Rocco Gianni’s ability to wear “short shorts” and still marry well. At the end of his address, he brought up a trophy called the golden oyster, which he presented to his father, a man whom he said would get to school by 4:30 a.m. and come home at 7 p.m. and still be willing to play Xbox with him, who let him yell with joy after his first kiss as he was being driven home and “a dad who taught me a smile is worth everything.” Superintendent Jo Moccia briefly addressed the students, joking that in her third South Whidbey High School graduation, she noticed that their shoes became “much more sensible.” She imparted some advice about being present and responsible. “Be active in your own life. Make the right choice,” she said.
