Jared Lanphear and Aeriel Strough, 22-yearold White River graduates, were killed at a logging site near Wilkeson Thursday evening after an excavator they were in rolled down an embankment. The driver, 35, survived and reported the incident at about 10:45 p.m. The three reportedly met over drinks and decided to go for a ride in the woods that night. “They were located 10 to 12 miles from Wilkeson, up a gravel road near a logging camp,” East Pierce Assistant Chief James Jaques said. “Both patients were dead at the scene.” The survivor’s injuries were treated by East Pierce firefighter-paramedics and he was transferred to a local trauma center for further evaluation. His injuries were not reported to be life threatening. Law enforcement began the initial search for the other two victims, who were pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the accident is being investigated by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Two private donors joined financial forces with JPMorgan Chase to bring a unique twist on the classic Goodwill store to a corner of downtown Sumner, located at 926
Main Street. Blue, a Goodwill boutique, carries designer brand clothing for men, women and children; accessories such as handbags and jewelry; movies, books and home decor. Prices are expected to be 60 to 70 percent below retail cost. The store held its grand opening on May 8 and many people from the community attended to honor the Ladds.
“This store is going to be a great new addition to historic downtown Sumner, and we really appreciate the Ladds, Chase and Goodwill for investing in the heart of our town,” Mayor Dave Enslow said. “Sumner is really getting to be a shopping destination that offers unique stores that specialize in up cycling. It fits perfectly to have the best donations offered in a boutique format on our

Bonney Lake takes second Panthers win one, lose
two at state tournament

In a season of ups and downs, wins and loses, the Panther baseball team found the formula to bring home the second place trophy from the 3A state tournament at Gesa Stadium in Pasco Saturday. Bonney Lake finished the season 9-6 in 3A South Puget Sound League and 18-11 overall. The Panthers lost in the state title game to O’Dea 12-0 in five innings. The Panthers took the fourth seed out of the district tournament, beating Mountain View 2-1 in the first round. Bonney Lake lost to Timberline 3-0 and Shelton 4-2 to take the fourth seed spot into state. In the first round of state Bonney Lake beat Glacier

Koltermann took the loss for the Panthers. Burill and T.J. Potts each had hits in the game. The second place trophy is the best finish for the Panthers who have been coached by Mike Olson since the school opened in 2005. Olson guided the team to third in state in 2007.

The Bonney Lake Panthers softball season ended Friday after going 1-2 in the first round of the 3A Softball State Championships. The Panthers faced Mount Si High School in the first round beating them 14-9. Bonney Lake scored first with two on and no outs in the first inning. The Sumner girls track and field team took 10th with 19 points and the boys 35th with five at the 2A state track and field team May 29-31 at Mount Tahoma High. For the girls, the 1,600 relay team of Emma Bakke, Rachel Stowell, Kinsey Saiz, Alyssa Murray took the silver medal in 4 minutes, 00.39 seconds. Junior Alyssa Murray finished eighth in the 800 meters in 2:20.43. Senior Amanda Riley was sixth in the 300 hurdles in 47.91. Khenya Dean took 13th in the discus reaching 95 feet, 8 inches. Rhaven Dean took sixth in the javelin reaching 123-03 and Alexandra Espinda was 13th at 107-07. Kimi Nakayama was fifth in the pole vault clearing 10-00. Senior Montana Galias took eighth in the javelin with 167-07. For the boys side, Andrew Andrada was fifth in the pole vault clearing 13-06 and Kolby Nikolaisen 15th at 12-00. Sophomore Josh Riley was 11th in the high jump at 5-10.

On this side of the mountains, golf is played in the fall but the state championship tournament is played in the spring. Seven golfers from Bonney Lake High School and Sumner High School played in the tournament on May 28 and 29.

The Spartans sent five to the state tournament. Three of the five played in both rounds. Matthew Stevens finished with 174 and tied for 36th place. He scored 87 in both rounds. Connor Smith tied for 38th finishing with a total of 175. Smith scored 82 in round one and 93 in round two. Riley Bruil and Alec Esterbrook played only in round one and they both scored 92. On the girls side, the Spartans sent Tianna Munroe. She played in both rounds scoring 103 in the first and 98 in the second. Munroe finished with a total of 201 and tied for 28th place.

Reaching friends on the party line When I was a little kid, the Pacific Telephone Company owned the phone service within the greater Enumclaw region. Of course, by modern standards this operation was pretty primitive. Its basic unit was an electrical circuit that connected perhaps eight or nine residential or business phones. Each circuit was called a “party line.” There were several of these party lines within the city limits and many more in the surrounding region. Behind this, in a large, poorly lighted inner sanctum with dark, rather depressing wood paneling, 25 or 30 operators – all women who were assigned various shifts and split-shifts – sat on high stools at a 15-foot switchboard of electrical jacks. Wearing earphones and mouthpieces, they controlled and connected the various party lines. If you were calling someone on your line, you could dial them directly. However, if you were calling someone on another party line, you had to dial the operator and she’d connect you. “Number, please,” she’d say. My first telephone experience took place while

China at the historical crossroads: Part 2 “Reform is China’s second revolution,” and “To get rich is glorious.” These are words from China’s communist leader, Deng Xiao Ping, who led China from 1978 to 1992. He set out to undo all the damage Mao Zedong had done to China with his Great Leap Forward (1958-61) and the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) as I discussed in last week’s column. As a 15-year-old in 1919, Deng set off to France for a work-study program. Just before he departed, his father asked him what he planned to learn in France. Deng’s answer was a prophecy of what he actually did as leader of China: “To learn knowledge and truth from the West to save China.” While Mao’s philosophy of applying communist ideology to China had disastrous effects, Deng’s approach was pure pragmatism: “It doesn’t matter whether a cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice,” was Deng’s famous quote. That pragmatism transformed China, giving the nation growth rates averaging 9.5 percent a year for 30 years. In 1977 Deng launched the “Beijing Spring” that encouraged open criticism of the excesses of the Cultural

Revolution. This weakened his political opponents and allowed him to rise to the top of power and influence in the Communist Party by 1978. Deng’s policies closely followed his pragmatic approach. He began to open up China to the West, following his youthful goal. Deng reversed many of Mao’s programs with his “Four Modernizations”: agricultural growth, economic development, increased development in science and technology and national defense. He de-collectivized the farms in a program called the Responsibility System, allowing individual Chinese families to grow what they wanted on their own pieces of land and to keep the profits from their work. The
program was highly successful and Chinese food production skyrocketed. Deng also set up the “One-Child Policy” to cut China’s growth rate, a pragmatic, if draconian, way for the government to increase the prosperity of the Chinese by decreasing the number of mouths they had to feed through artificial birth control and forced abortions. Calling his return to capitalism, “Socialism with Chinese Characteristics,” Deng encouraged cities and provinces to set up industries directed toward exporting goods overseas, thus taking advantage of the millions of China’s low-wage workers. Deng also set up “special economic zones” which encouraged Western companies to invest in the economic development of China. Deng Xiao Ping was the leader who ordered the People’s Liberation Army to crush the pro-democracy demonstrators who were using western nonviolent demonstrations in Tiananmen Square in 1989. He did so while he was on his sickbed. This, too, was a pragmatic, Machiavellian method for the Communist Party to maintain

izing our current, older cat. But in my youngest daughter’s desire to have a cuddle buddy, we went to the shelter and found an affectionate male cat. So far, I think it will turn out okay, even if our older cat isn’t quite sure, at least she’s not being terrorized. They don’t have to love each other, they just have to tolerate each other. Anyway, when my oldest daughter had several friends over for her birthday party, the new cat started dashing around the house frantically looking for a place to hide. He bolted from the family room, which concerned me because the sliding glass door in the kitchen was wide open. But he wasn’t interested in going outside; in fact, he seems quite adverse to the idea. I suspect he was someone’s indoor cat, somehow got caught outside, had a runin with another animal (he had an abscess on his head when he was brought into the shelter), and determined that the great outdoors is not his friend. Once he

came into my bedroom and ran in terror because I had my window wide open. I went after him as he tore down the hall. He is able to open drawers and cupboards to find the perfect hiding place so finding him can be tricky. I found him in my bathroom windowsill cowering over the trauma of encountering seven laughing, screaming, teens (I sometimes feel the same way). I picked him up and put him in the computer room, shut the door and gave instructions not to open the door or approach him in packs. He was perfectly fine the rest of the night. Since I’ve invited a crowd of people to my party, I have to consider the animals. My sister will be here and she’s allergic to cats, but I’ll still have to put the cat in the computer room, which is also a guest room. I can put
a sheet over her bed in case he curls up on it. Then there is our little dog; she hates the laughter and joy of teens, but she loves the attention a crowd affords her. The problem is her breath stunk from ten feet away. I took her to the vet and had her teeth cleaned so people won’t lose their appetite when she’s near. She’ll also get a summer trim so she’s tidy in case she jumps into people’s laps. Then there is the bird. The bird gets territorial around crowds and may bite, so I’ll put her in my older daughter’s room and close the door. Last, but certainly not least is our older cat. She loves parties because all the doors are usually open and she can run in and out as she pleases. She thinks we do that just for her and she’s highly disappointed when the company leaves and we close the doors. So you see, parties at my house are not about how nice the garden looks, how clean the house is, or what we eat, it’s really about whether my animals are happy or not. Summer Recipes Rhubarb Cardamom Galette Carmen Palmer, Sumner’s communications director, tried this recipe last year from Sunset Magazine. Palmer said she “always recommends rhubarb recipes.” Ingredients 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed 3 tablespoons granulated sugar, divided 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom 2 tablespoons flour 12 ounces rhubarb (roughly 8 thin or 3 thick stalks)
Preparation • Preheat oven to 425 degrees with a rack set on lowest level. Unfold pastry onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. In a small bowl, mix together 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, the brown sugar, cardamom and flour. Evenly sprinkle sugar mixture over pastry. • Trim rhubarb 1 inch shorter than pastry then split lengthwise into 1/2 inch wide pieces. Lay pieces parallel across the pastry square leaving 1/2 inch border of pastry. Sprinkle rhubarb with remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar. • Bake galette until edges are golden brown and puffed
- 12 to 15 minutes. Serve with sweetened whipped cream or ice cream. This recipe is available at www.myrecipes.com.

SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE There are plenty of things to celebrate and be proud about in the Sumner School District. Namely, our students! Many of our seniors are counting down the minutes before they fling the mortarboard and embark on a new journey. The high school years go by quickly and its always impressive to see what senior students have accomplished – and learn of what they will do next. We want them to soar as they exit high school. But the soaring is already occurring. So many of our students have successfully “launched” and are positioning themselves for success. With the help of parents, teachers, and principals, our students are accomplishing great things. Let me share some highlights with you … Arturo Perez will be graduating from Sumner High School this year. Arturo has been awarded many honors, including International Baccalaureate Math student of the year and Tacoma Athletic Commission athlete of the year. Arturo speaks English and Spanish fluently and has excelled all the way through his 12 years as a Sumner student. He has overcome all obstacles and has been awarded a full ride, four-year scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. Celine Patrick and Ashlee Tarro, 10th graders at Sumner High School, were just honored at The White House Science Fair. Because of their National Award Winning FFA agri-science projects, Celine and Ashlee were invited to attend the 2014 White House Science Fair and meet President Barack Obama. Chelsie Conroy is a Bonney Lake High School graduate. Chelsie took 1st place in the Congressional Art Competition. Her astounding, winning painting will be on display for a full year in the U.S. Capitol beginning in June.

Cheyenne has also been chosen for The News Tribune’s 2014 All-Star Graduates team, which recognizes 12 outstanding high school seniors from South Puget Sound high schools.

TEACHER RECEIVES WASA COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD Sumner High School teacher, John Norlin, is the recipient of the 2014 Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) Region III Community Leadership Award. We are so proud of the impact John has on our district culture and students. For 18 years students who had failed everywhere else had a second chance, and 50 percent of them finally made it and graduated. It was a wonderful thing. But with the Dahlquist fund-
ing cuts, those students now have dropped out. They have nowhere to go. In 1997 the way was opened for homeschoolers to work with the public districts in a variety of ways that benefited both. That flexibility to educate children in the ways they learn best ended in 2011. Guess who sponsored the bill that ended educational flexibility in Washington? Dahlquist. I have been an educator for 41 years and have worked with needy stu-
dents for 17 of those years. I have written to Hurst, to Dahlquist and to Roach many times. I have invited them to speak to our students, to visit our programs. I have supplied facts and research about how to best educate students, particularly the neediest of our students, and have informed them what actually works. Roach visited our schools and learned about the alternative programs on the Plateau. She spoke to our students. She listened to educators with years of
experience. She sponsored two bills in the senate to provide a more appropriately focused curriculum and job-ready graduation requirements for at-risk and needy students. Hurst wrote me a letter explaining his position and courteously disagreeing with mine, but never visited to discover the facts. Dahlquist never even replied at all. When my wife called Dahlquist at her office to express her disappointment that she (Dahlquist) would oppose the very best
aspects of public education, and to explain a better way, Dahlquist did not listen. Dahlquist did chatter endlessly to my wife, attempting to dissuade her. As a professional educator, I can tell you straight up that Dahlquist, and those who side with her, have been the death of education in this state. And that is why it is so appalling that she would pretend to be a pro-education candidate.

“Hi, Gary! Can you come over and play?” The party line always had considerable fascination for children, especially those with hyperactive imaginations. I mean, you could actually spy on your neighbors! With a hand clasped tightly over the mouthpiece, you could hold the receiver to one ear and surreptitiously listen to “private” conversations. My mother scolded me for such eavesdropping, but that simply increased its appeal.
Mom knew many of the operators on a first-name basis. When phoning one of her friends across town, she’d occasionally get side-tracked talking with an operator. Such downhome, folksy ways ended when automation eliminated most of the operators around 1958. AT&T closed its last Washington state facility that had live operators about 20 years ago. Today, you can still speak to real operators in real time, but now you’ll be routed through Phoenix. (Chances are
you won’t know any of them.) So, I recall walking through New York’s Greenwich Village with my first cell phone in a coat pocket. And right there, on the street, my mother called me. Given the above history, you can understand what a “miraculous” and delightful experience that was. Nevertheless, I no longer have a cell phone. I don’t want people to find me that easily.

policies. They have been very successful and have transformed China’s economy and the nation with new roads, rebuilt cities, enormous water projects and more economic freedom. China has transformed itself into the No. 1 economic power in the world in 2013, according to Gross Domestic Product. Deng’s economic low-wage program brought more prosperity to China and was used to reform and rebuild the nation. But that phase has ended. Chinese wages have risen 10
percent in recent years. That means the end of cheap labor, China’s comparative advantage with the rest of the world. Under the new leadership of Xi Jinping, installed in power in 2013 for 10 years, China finds itself at another crossroads. How can China continue its economic growth and also take its place among the great military powers of the earth, challenging U.S. hegemony in the Pacific? That question will be answered in coming years.

Jared Lanphear and Aeriel Strough, 22-yearold White River graduates, were killed at a logging site near Wilkeson Thursday evening after an excavator they were in rolled down an embankment. The driver, 35, survived and reported the incident at about 10:45 p.m. The three reportedly met over drinks and decided to go for a ride in the woods that night. “They were located 10 to 12 miles from Wilkeson, up a gravel road near a logging camp,” East Pierce Assistant Chief James Jaques said. “Both patients were dead at the scene.” The survivor’s injuries were treated by East Pierce firefighter-paramedics and he was transferred to a local trauma center for further evaluation. His injuries were not reported to be life threatening. Law enforcement began the initial search for the other two victims, who were pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the accident is being investigated by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Main Street. Blue, a Goodwill boutique, carries designer brand clothing for men, women and children; accessories such as handbags and jewelry; movies, books and home decor. Prices are expected to be 60 to 70 percent below retail cost. The store held its grand opening on May 8 and many people from the community attended to honor the Ladds.
“This store is going to be a great new addition to historic downtown Sumner, and we really appreciate the Ladds, Chase and Goodwill for investing in the heart of our town,” Mayor Dave Enslow said. “Sumner is really getting to be a shopping destination that offers unique stores that specialize in up cycling. It fits perfectly to have the best donations offered in a boutique format on our
