Welcome to our island A writer for The New York Times once described the ferry ride from Seattle to Vashon Island as a trip back in time. Indeed, stepping foot onto our island seems like stepping into a simpler time. There are open pastures dotted with cottages and barns, stretches of beach where dogs can play off-leash and miles of quiet hiking trails. Islanders greet one another in the grocery store, and family farms have stands on the side of the road. But Vashon is also a lively place with much to offer — vibrant shops and galleries, inviting restaurants, fun community events, impressive theater productions and concerts of all kinds. So what makes this island in the sound seem worlds — or decades — away from the big city? On Vashon, we’re surrounded by natural beauty — dense woods and scenic shorelines. But we’re also surrounded by island residents of every stripe, and in many ways it’s the people who inhabit this place who make it special. addling Vashon’s waters, whether exploring a quiet harbor or crossing an open section of Puget Sound, is one of the joys of island life.

Vashon Watersports helps make those paddling trips possible. Located on Quartermaster Harbor, Vashon Watersports has a fleet of kayaks, canoes and paddleboards available for families looking for a relaxing outing, experienced paddlers in search of adventure and everyone in between. Boats and boards are available to rent by the hour or day, and Vashon Watersports staff also transport their watercraft to several places on the island for an additional fee. If a group wants to explore Colvos Passage on Vashon’s west side, for example, kayaks can be transported to and from Lisabeula Park. Should paddlers wish to stay close to the rental center and explore Quartermaster Harbor, they will find calm, protected and relatively shallow waters and an abundance of wildlife, from eagles flying overhead to harbor

“For beginners, Quartermaster Harbor is paradise,” said Doug Kieper, who owns Vashon Watersports with his wife Erin.
For those who would like to experience the harbor at night, guided monthly nighttime paddles when the moon is full provide an outstanding opportunity. Special weekly trips led by naturalist and environmental educator Maria Metler offer paddlers, including families, a window into the natural world of the harbor and may include a chance to see sand dollar beds, sea stars and a variety of birds as well as learn about the maritime history of the area.
Beyond typical paddling excursions, which people can do on their own or with a guide, Vashon Watersports offers kayak classes, camps for teens, moonlight paddles and weekly trips led by a local naturalist. Vashon Watersports’ classes — basic strokes and basic rescues — are typically offered on Saturday mornings and provide an excellent introduction to the sport. For teens, monthly camps this

Vashon Watersports is located at 8900 S.W. Harbor Dr. on the Burton Peninsula. From Memorial Day weekend into September, the rental center is open from Friday through Sunday. Kayak enthusiasts may wish to head to Vashon this August, when Vashon Youth & Family Services (VYFS) hopes to draw 2,500 kayaks and canoes into Quartermaster Harbor for a record-breaking raft-up. The event, which will include a weekend of activities, is a fundraiser for the social services agency. When kayakers pull together, grabbing each other’s boats or oars to make themselves sturdier or create a higher profile, this is called rafting up. Kathleen Johnson, the executive director of VYFS, said the metaphor of rafting up is perfect for community life. “It speaks to bringing all sorts of people together and recognizing that we’re stronger when we’re together,” she said. The tiny town of Inlet, N.Y., set the rafting up record when it gathered 1,902 kayaks and canoes. VYFS hopes to get 2,500 boats on the water off of Vashon, a feat that could place Vashon in the record books and raise more than $100,000 for the agency. Raft Up will begin Saturday, Aug. 16, with camping and a music festival at the Open Space for Arts & Community. On Sunday, Aug. 17, there will be a waterfront festival at Jensen Point, and the raft-up will begin at 1:30 p.m. Registration is $25; to sign up see www.vyfs.org/raftup.

Cycling Vashon Island is known throughout the region as a great place to cycle. Its expanse of rural roads — some hilly, some not — take cyclists past forests, farms and beaches, as well as some great places to stop for a bite to eat. Though the roads can be narrow, cars are often sparse, and the share-the-road ethic runs strong on Vashon. And there are plenty of great routes to consider. David Weller Photo

Popular among serious cyclists is a 32-mile loop of the island, which takes riders along the quiet west side, as far south as the so-called
A 12-mile loop starts at the north-end ferry terminal, heads down the highway to 171st and then veers east along the Dilworth Loop, ultimately circling back to the ferry. Another fantastic loop — especially on a warm, summer day — takes riders from the north-end ferry dock south to Quartermaster Drive and then north to KVI Beach, a great place to stop and relax. All of these routes, and much more information, can be found at BikeVashon.org, a site created by a group of local cyclists. The site links to www.seattlebiketours.org, which also lists nine different suggested routes for Vashon, replete with detailed maps.

Passport to Pain
The toughest ride in the region Forget the Chilly Hilly, Bainbridge Island’s 33-mile bike ride with a vertical gain of a mere 2,675 feet. Cyclists who want to prove their mettle — and feel every aching muscle in their body the following day — should head to Vashon for the Passport to Pain. If one does the full 78-mile course, called, sardonically, “The Idiot,” one climbs 10,000 feet. But not to worry. Less ambitious cyclists can go for “The Weasel” or “The Weenie,” both shorter options. The Passport to Pain (or P2P) started a few years ago as a fundraiser for the Vashon Island Rowing Club. The event now draws both local riders and serious athletes from around the country. This year’s event — it’s not a race but a fundraising ride — takes place on Saturday, Sept. 13. And what a way to see the island. P2P’s circuitous course strings together Vashon’s steepest hills (27, all told), circumnavigating both Maury and Vashon islands and visiting nearly every waterfront community with paved access. Riders obtain a “passport” with a pledge of $100. That passport gets stamped at 18 strategic checkpoints along the route. Every stamp gives the rider a $4 “rebate,” so that those who collect all 18 stamps end up making a contribution of only $20. (Many riders, however, forgo the rebate.) A big weekend for races The organizers of Vashon’s two triathlon events, the XTERRA Vashon Off-Road Triathlon and the Heart of the Sound (HOTS) triathlon, have joined forces this year to offer these races, as well as a separate trail run and open swim, all in one endurance-testing weekend. The newly christened Vashon Island Clean-and-Dirty MultiSport Festival Weekend will take place July 5 and 6 at Dockton Park, and the weekend will be as challenging as the name is long. The holiday weekend will include both off-road as well as road racing, something organizers say should complement rather than conflict with each other.

Maury Island
Where people turned the tide Amy Carey at the former Glacier site, which is now called the Maury Island Natural Area.
Proposed mining site is now an expansive park BY LESLIE BROWN
A
my Carey paused on a bald bluff overlooking Maury Island’s former gravel mine – a cavernous bowl ringed by stands of madrone and a long ribbon of beach, the gray-blue expanse of Puget Sound beyond it. But she wasn’t thinking about the quiet beauty of the spot. It was here on a chilly winter afternoon, she recalled, that she lay flat on the ground, binoculars in one hand, phone in the other, giving reports to Preserve Our Islands’ attorney about apparent infractions by a Japanese-based conglomerate racing against time to build its industrial-scale pier. “I felt too prominent standing up, so I laid on the ground,” said Carey, who was president of Preserve Our Islands (POI) at the time. She smiled at the memory. “There were several of us who called ourselves POI spies.” Not too long ago, this 275-acre site was ground zero in one of the biggest environmental battles in the region, a protracted, 13-year struggle between environmentalists who wanted

to see the madrone forests and eelgrass beds protected and a company that wanted to excavate and export tons of gravel to a growth-hungry Pugetopolis a few miles away. Most of the skirmishes took place in courtrooms and government offices, where Glacier Northwest — owned by the Japanese conglomerate — sought the permits it needed to move forward. But the battles also unfolded here, at what is now called the Maury Island Natural Area, when Glacier appeared to have victory in its hands and hundreds of islanders rose up to try to block it. People protested. Dozens, dressed in black and white, formed the shape of a giant orca whale, posing for news helicopters overhead. And people like Amy Carey took to the empty bluffs above the site, watching and reporting as Glacier began to build its pier. To walk it now, all that seems a lifetime ago. Today, Carey says, the site — known simply as Glacier to most islanders — stands as “a shining moment” for Vashon and the entire Puget Sound region, a symbol of what a tenacious band of environmentalists can accomplish. It’s also a remarkably peaceful place to take a walk. Purchased by King County in 2011 after a federal judge threw a barrier in Glacier’s path, the Maury Island Natural Area is now open to the public and laced with miles of trails. One skirts the rim of the former mining site, affording visitors dramatic views of Puget Sound and the occasional glimpse of Mount Rainier. Others wind through thick stands of madrone and salal, forests that suggest Middle Earth when sunlight glints on the trees’ gnarled, cinnamon-colored trunks.
Outdoors People walk their dogs here. Some ride horses. On a recent spring morning, chickadees and white-crowned sparrows sang in the thickets. Salmonberries bloomed, drawing native hummingbirds to their magenta-colored flowers. Towering maples were leafing out. In heavily developed King County, this is a place of superlatives. The site’s nearly one mile of beach is the longest stretch of undeveloped Puget Sound shoreline in King County. When combined with the nearby 320-acre Maury Island Marine Park, the two sites represent the largest public holding of protected marine shoreline in all of Puget Sound. Plans are underway to develop trails that would join the two sites, separated now by a mile of road and private property, a move that would result in a park-like expanse more than 800 acres in size. Amy Carey helmed POI during the final stretch of the 13-year battle. But she was hardly a lone warrior.
public ownership, a victory that often seemed out of reach to many who were watching from the sidelines. During the heat of that battle, Carey repeatedly said she believed POI and its supporters would prevail. Still, when it actually happened, when POI’s lawyer called with the news that Glacier had lost in federal court, Carey ran out into the streets screaming. “Every inch of my body tingled,” she recalled. “I couldn’t stop screaming and crying.” Now, when she gets a report of an orca sighting off the shores of the Maury Island Natural Area, she relishes the news. This is what drives her, she said, a deep belief that tenacity can make a difference and an honest realization that hers is sometimes a lonely position. “It’s easier to give up than to have hope,” she said. Remnants of mining activity remain at the site, which is now popular with hikers, joggers and mountain bikers. Sharon Nelson, now a state senator and the Senate Democratic leader, founded POI; indeed, the battle against Glacier launched her political career. The Backbone Campaign, a progressive group known for its use of political theater to push for social and environmental change, organized much of the direct action that captured the attention of Seattle-based media. Tom Dean, who heads Vashon’s land trust, found critical pots of money that helped the county and Forterra, a land conservation organization, piece together the $36 million deal to purchase the property. And dozens of other islanders stepped in along the way, raising funds, pressing politicians, shaping strategy and attending hearings. Carey today heads POI’s successor, Sound Action, a watchdog organization that continues to advocate for the health of Puget Sound. As we made our way through the site, walking along the bluff, then dropping down on an old road to the beach, she talked about her ongoing frustration with state regulators and their seeming inability to enforce laws crafted to protect marine environments. But she also relished the win that took place in 2011, putting this former mine site into www.vashonbeachcomber.com

ith 51 miles of shoreline, Vashon has lovely and diverse beaches — empty stretches for quiet walks, sandy expanses that delight children, places that are hard to reach and others that are easy to drive to. Here’s a list of beaches that are open to the public. Dockton Park
Owned by King County, this 23-acre park doesn’t have much sand but it’s a favorite on Vashon — especially among teens, who swear the water is the warmest on Vashon. The park has a playground, a grassy lawn, restrooms, a boat launch and a pier. It’s also the beginning of the Dockton Historical Trail. Directions: From town, go south on Vashon Highway. Turn left at S.W. 204th Street. When it comes to a T at the water’s edge, turn right onto Dockton Road S.W. Cross the isthmus to Maury and continue south until you enter Dockton. Ray Pfortner Photo

Maury Island Marine Park This 320-acre park, owned by King County, was once a gravel pit. But thanks to an ongoing restoration campaign, the park — an expanse that begins in the woods and ends at the shore — is looking

The North End If you happen to be stuck at the north-end ferry dock during a low tide, the beach in front of La Playa Mexican Restaurant is a fun one to explore. Blake Island can be seen directly to the north. Look for sea critters, especially under the dock, but be respectful of nearby homes.

Winghaven Park This 12-acre park on the north end of the island suggests Vashon’s grand past; it’s the site of a former waterfront estate and still boasts a crumbling balustrade. The rocky, quiet beach offers views of Mount Rainier. Owned by the Vashon Park District, it’s also a great place to collect beach glass. Directions: From the north-end ferry dock, head south on Vashon Highway. In about a mile, take a left on Cunliffe Road. The park entrance is a half-mile down the hill, down a wooden staircase on the left side.

Point Robinson Park Play at the beach, picnic and see a lighthouse Point Robinson, on the easternmost tip of Maury Island, is a particularly beloved spot. It boasts a historic lighthouse, a large lawn for picnics, white-washed keepers quarters and a long stretch of beach.

The lighthouse began as a fog signal in 1885; a light was added in 1887. The structure still holds a fifth-order Fresnel lens, a beautiful piece of Victorian technology that traveled from Paris to Vashon in 1915. Though now decommissioned, the lens still sits in its original spot and is wired, so visitors can see how it works.
Point Robinson is managed by the Vashon Park District. Tours of the lighthouse take place between noon and 4 p.m. every Sunday, from mid-May to mid-September. ashon Island is a haven for birders. It provides a quiet, rural environment, attracting all of the region’s bird diversity with its wide variety of habitats. Over the years, observers continue to record new species to add to the island bird checklist, which now comes to 251 species.

to sit on a log and look across the water. At low tide, mud flats extend almost a quarter mile into Puget Sound. These mudflats attract a great variety of shorebirds and gulls after the Fourth of July. Spotted, western, least and Baird’s sandpipers; semipalmated plovers, greater yellowlegs and longbilled dowitchers scatter across the sand and mud, probing and prying for food. One can’t take a step without setting off the shrill cries of killdeer, which scamper by the dozens through the exposed mussels and barnacles. Bonaparte’s, mew, California, glaucous-winged and the occasional rare Franklin’s gull rest and preen along the water’s edge. In winter, loons, diving ducks and black turnstones give nature a chance to delight with dozens of beautiful variations of black and white. In the middle of Vashon, Fisher Pond, just a mile west of town, has a wonderful trail along Bank Road. Masked by trees, the path allows quiet walkers to behold the beautiful wood duck close up at any time of year. The weird, jungle bird-like call of the pied-billed grebe floats over the pond in spring and summer. In the late spring and summer, as the pond dries and lily pads expand, bald eagles and Cooper’s hawk swoop in, looking for young wood ducks and mallards. Snipe and other shorebirds probe the mud in early fall. Come November, rains swell the pond back up to size, attracting
The local land trust, King County, the park district and others have identified important habitats and scenic locations that preserve the key natural places for birds and wildlife. The network of parks and preserves helps keep bird populations stable and offers easy, close and quick access to many ecological niches that support a large range of species packed into a relatively small area. Choices available in just a short walk vary from the hidden beach at Fern Cove to a secluded walk through woods at Fisher Pond to the sandy shoreline at KVI Beach and the diving birds of Tramp Harbor. Fern Cove, hidden on the northwest corner of Vashon, provides a short, quiet walk through an older, second-growth coniferous forest where winter wrens sing and twitter throughout the summer. The trail opens to a secluded beach that looks out across Colvos Passage to the craggy Olympic Mountains. At high tide, there’s just enough room 20 2014-2015 Destination Vashon

many kinds of puddle ducks, including shovelers, teal, ring-necked duck and bufflehead. KVI Beach boasts a great sandy beach with beautiful views of Mount Rainier and Puget Sound. A small stream creates a nice wading and sandcastle building area for kids. During the extreme low tides of summer, a spit grows far out into Puget Sound, revealing eel grass beds and sea life.
Meanwhile, birders won’t be able to miss the cloud of purple martins overhead, joined regularly by local ospreys diving for fish. Behind the beach, this location supports a small salicornia salt marsh/estuary surrounding a pond. As at Fern Cove, an excellent shorebird migration moves through in spring and late summer, giving close-up views of many species of sandpipers. During the fall and winter, a flock of green-winged teal, mallard and the occasional northern pintail or gadwall utilize the pond and many loons, grebes and diving ducks forage just off shore. Flocks of Brant geese investigate the shoreline in March and April. Nearby Tramp Harbor provides the best birding from October through April. Viewed from the parking pull-off at Ellisport, the fishing pier mid-harbor or the exercise bikes at Portage, these sheltered waters host hundreds of scoters, goldeneye, scaup, grebes, loons and cormorants. Beginning in September, a flock of American wigeon builds to 600 or more birds by late
December in some years. Usually one or two Eurasian wigeon, birds that took a wrong turn up in Siberia, show up with the more usual American wigeon. The pier offers close-up views of common and Pacific loons, both goldeneye species and the most dependable spot for eared grebe in the central Puget Sound area. Usually a mixed surf scoter and white-winged scoter flock, numbering in the hundreds, dives off Portage.

ashon is a walker’s paradise. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust, King County and the Vashon Park District, the island is laced with trails, some of which wind for miles through moss-draped forests. And while popular, they’re often quiet, offering up sweet solitude for those in search of a bit of tranquility. Island Center Forest Now more than 400 acres in size, Island Center Forest is the largest and most popular expanse of trails on Vashon. The site, owned by King County and managed by a consortium of users, was once a working forest. Today, this large, contiguous forest boasts a warren of trails, two ponds, extensive wetlands and an artful, open-sided shelter for picnics and social gatherings. And, as the name suggests, it’s centrally located. Kiosks are now in place, replete with maps that can help hikers find their way. But be sure to wear your boots — trails are sometimes muddy. The forest also closes for a few weeks in the fall to all but hunters. How to get there: There are several entrances into the forest, but the one that offers the best parking is off of Vashon Highway. Head south from town, take a right on S.W. 188th St. Go to the end — about a

Dockton Forest / Maury Island Natural Area Like Island Center Forest, these two natural areas are big enough to get lost in. Combined, the two sites — one a former mining site — are now more than 400 acres, an expansive forest with a confusing but delightful warren of trails. Hardy walkers can go from shore to shore at this site — trails lead from Dockton Park on Quartermaster Harbor all the way to the eastern edge of Maury Island on Puget Sound. See page 14 for more on this area and its history. How to get there: The easiest entrance is right across the road from Dockton Park. Head to Dockton on Dockton Road S.W. A pullout large enough to accommodate horse trailers can be found on the south side of the road just before reaching the park. Another approach, which begins on a ridge overlooking Puget Sound, is reached by going to a gated entrance at the corner of 79th Ave. S.W. and S.W. 260th St., just west of Gold Beach. Dogs and horses are allowed.

Christensen Pond Preserve A birder’s paradise, this 30-acre preserve on the west side of the island was protected in 2000 with the help of the Vashon Audubon Society. It offers both a small pond and extensive wetlands — a haven for migratory songbirds, waterfowl, owls and hawks. A trail, not quite a mile long, circumnavigates the pond through a pleasant coniferous forest. How to get there: The preserve is due west of Burton on Wax Orchard Road just south of S.W. 232nd Street. Look for the small sign that says “nature preserve.” Dogs are not allowed.
Fisher Pond Preserve
Burton Acres This 64-acre park on the Burton Peninsula offers several lovely trails winding through a mature, diverse forest, with towering big-leaf maples, Douglas firs and the occasional Pacific yew. The trails are flat and provide easy walking. How to get there: Take Vashon Highway into Burton and head east onto S.W. Burton Drive. Turn right at 97th Avenue S.W. and follow the road to Jensen Point Park, where parking is available. Dogs are allowed.

A lovely, half-mile trail circumnavigates Fisher Pond, named for islander Bill Fisher, who donated this 90-acre preserve to the land trust. At the west end, a picnic shelter and table are perched above the water, providing views of this shallow, bird-friendly pond. The land trust has built an additional trail from the east end of the loop, which extends through a lovely forest to Cove Road, and another from the west end, which extends almost to Agren Park.

Shinglemill Creek / Fern Cove Vashon’s newest hiking trail is a delightful two-mile traverse that takes hikers along the crest of a ridge, into a tree-studded ravine, across Needle Creek and along the shores of Shinglemill Creek, a salmon-bearing stream that empties into Fern Cove. At the end of this topographically diverse trail, cross Cedarhurst Road S.W. and pick up the last leg — a final stretch that

Vashon activists promote only shorebased whale watching, and under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, boats must stay at least 200 yards away from whales, giving them a wide berth in their home.

Acclaimed Thai chef brings her dream to Vashon BY SARAH LOW
hen May Chaleoy left her popular Thai restaurant in Wallingford several years ago, she thought she was done with the restaurant business for good. That is until a dream she had one night while staying on Vashon.
W
“In the dream, my friends and I walked into a restaurant, but I didn’t know where or whose it was. Then I saw my statue of King Rama V, and I knew,” she recalled. “This was my restaurant, the one I was supposed to have. So I decided to do it again.” Luckily for the residents of Vashon and anyone willing to catch a ferry from the mainland, Chaleoy did just that with her new venture, May Kitchen + Bar. The restaurant opened in 2012 in the heart of Vashon town and has already received rave reviews from Seattle area restaurant guides and travel guides such as Fodor’s. With quotes like “The best Thai in Seattle is on Vashon” and “Foodies swoon over the delectable Thai dishes cooked to perfection,” it’s easy to see why this unobtrusive eatery rarely has an empty table.

While the road to this Thai restaurant perfection has been anything but predictable, Chaleoy’s culinary creations clearly speak to her skills — skills that she says she learned not from formal training, but from her grandparents. In an interview, the diminutive restaurateur explained that growing up in Bangkok, she was the only girl of three children, and her mother didn’t know what to do with her. “So she sent me to the country to stay with my grandparents a lot, and I always helped them cook,” she said. This is also the reason, Chaleoy says, that the dishes on her menu are not typical urban Thai fare. “The things I make you would not find in the city, like Bangkok, or at my mother’s house. I learned the older, more traditional style.” But Chaleoy did not see her time in her grandparents’ kitchen as anything but happy memories until much later in her life. With a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a successful career as a real estate agent in Bangkok, Chaleoy decided to pursue a degree in English so that she could better serve her international clients, and in 1995, she came to Seattle as a student. After studying English, fashion design and performance production, she eventually decided to pursue a master’s degree in computer science as well. Needing to support herself through all of this schooling,

Chaleoy got a job as a dishwasher at a Thai restaurant. At the restaurant she moved her way up the ranks of the kitchen staff. Eventually, with the help of a friend, she decided to open her own Thai restaurant, May Restaurant and Lounge, in the Wallingford area of Seattle. Under her management and culinary direction, the Wallingford eatery established itself firmly and with much critical acclaim in the Seattle restaurant scene. But after her business partner moved back to Thailand, Chaleoy became exhausted and unhappy with the demanding work of running a restaurant alone. “I was doing everything myself seven days a week for three years. It was time to end that,” she said of her decision to leave the otherwise successful business. In need of a new job, Chaleoy ended up helping a friend manage his vacation rentals on Vashon. Soon after that night, Chaleoy and the friend she was working for became business partners and set to work on the restaurant of her dreams — literally. It took nearly two years to get the restaurant ready, Chaleoy said, because everything had to be right. Being right, according to her dream, meant importing centuries-old teak and mahogany for the interior, as well as antique light fixtures and almost everything else that’s visible in the restaurant, from Thailand. “I did most of the work on my own or with friends helping. It took a long time. People were knocking on the door asking all the time when it would be done,” she said.

Wineries add taste to any island outing Vashon winemakers produce award-winning flavors, sometimes from local grapes A small place with classic taste, Vashon boasts five commercial wineries. Two of them are open to the public for tastings, so wine lovers can set aside a summer afternoon to meet local vintners and get a taste of what they make. Palouse Winery on Vashon’s north end produces 1,000 cases of handcrafted wine a year. Owners George and Linda Kirkish, whose bottles have won a slate of awards, complete the entire winemaking process on-site using Eastern Washington grapes and aging the wine in French oak barrels. The winery recently released its first port, which it makes using all Vashon-

Food & Drink Vashon’s oldest winery, Vashon Winery, has been producing cabernet sauvignon, merlot and its reserve red for more than two decades. Ron Irvine, the winery’s owner, was named Best Winemaker of 2012 in the Seattle Weekly’s Best of Seattle edition. Irvine now works with several local vineyards, so many of his bottles incorporate grapes grown right on Vashon. Irvine has also been gaining a following for his hard cider and his sparkling white wine. Tasting: Vashon Winery is open for free tastings from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday through Oct. 1, and for

Sweetbread Cellars, made by Sea Breeze Farm, is another Vashon vintage. It’s available in specialty Seattle shops.
Try a wine bar Vine to Vashon is a wine shop with a twist. Instead of a dizzying array of bottles lining the shelves, the shop, nestled between The Hardware Store Restaurant and Vashon Liquor, sells a selection of wines all on tap. Wines can be tasted before purchasing and are sold in one-liter reusable bottles. Return customers will receive a discount for bringing the bottle back. Most of the wine is from Eastern Washington, but one tap is reserved for Vashon wines. Vine to Vashon is open 1 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. It sometimes has special events as well; see its Facebook page for more.

Cider, spirits and more In recent years a crop of innovative islanders has begun hand-crafting alcohol and producing bottles that rival those of the best known makers. Now nearly any type of drink you can think of — wine, beer, cider and even liquor — is made and sold on Vashon. Dragon’s Head Cider is made by an couple who use apples from both on and off the island and are growing their own orchard. They offer several varieties of semi-dry English cider, with bottles available at Thriftway, Vashon Liquor and The Minglement, and they hold tastings at the Farmers Market. New to the scene, Nashi Orchards recently opened with the release of its Chojuro Blend Asian Pear Perry, with more varieties to come. Owners and winemakers Jim Gerlach and Cheryl Lubbert operate a pear orchard that was established in the 1980s on Wax Orchard Road. Their perry — a wine-like drink made from pears — can be purchased at Thriftway, The Minglement and Express Cuisine. Nashi also offers tastings and orchard tours by appointment; call 463-3058. Vashon Brewing Company offers original beers brewed right on Vashon using all Washington and local ingredients. Several local restaurants carry the beer, called “Cliff’s Beer” after the brewer. Or pick up a refillable growler at Vashon Liquor, The Minglement or the Farmers Market, where the beer can also be tasted.

Seattle Distilling Company, operated by two island families, has quickly taken off since opening at Center and now makes vodka, gin, whiskey and coffee liqueur. It recently won an award from the American Distilling Institute for its vodka, and this summer it will release a strawberry vodka in honor of the Strawberry Festival. The Country Store turns 50

alking into The Country Store and Farm, a place that has been in business for 50 years on Vashon, is a feast for the senses.

Mike Biel now manages The Country Store, a general store his mother started. den staples — everything from tools to seeds to pest control products and fertilizer. And outside the store, 10 acres stretch out in a lush you-pick orchard and nursery.
It starts in the parking lot, as customers spy rows of colorful ceramic pots and flats of delicate perennial plants on the store’s wraparound wooden porch.
The store’s success and charm, according to manager Mike Biel, all boils down to the inventiveness and imagination of its longtime owner — his mother, Vy Biel.
Just across the threshold, a bounty of goods awaits — racks of colorful clothing, a case filled with handcrafted jewelry, stacks of books, displays of thick wool socks, shelves stocked with Northwest specialty foods, hand-dipped candles, rubber boots and much, much more are all on display. Everywhere, it seems, there are textures to reach out and touch.
“What we’re doing here is just carrying her original vision forward,” he said. “She had a really good vision.”
But there’s also an appealingly earthy smell in the air. It’s the unmistakable, old-timey scent of a general store — one that offers not only necessities for the inside of your house and closet, but niceties for your pets and garden as well. One large room of the spacious store is stocked with organic livestock and pet food, as well as organic and natural gar-

Vy has owned the store for 42 years, beginning in 1971, but last year, at the age of 91, she moved into an assisted-living facility on the island, and Mike took over, regularly commuting for weeks at a time to Vashon from his California home. Since then, he’s added staff and new inventory to the store, as well as spruced up the building’s interior and exteriors. All the while, he’s continued his longtime career in California, working in the boat industry. “We decided that because the store has been a part of the community for so long that it was important to keep it going,”

Food & Drink Mike said. “We really just want to make it a more fun place for people to come and hang out and get whatever they need.” For Mike, who is now a youthful-looking 52 years old, the business has been a central fact of his life since childhood. “When I was in the fifth grade, my mother asked us if we’d be interested in her buying the store,” Mike said. “She actually was concerned about it — was it a good idea for our family?” Mike remembers helping out at the store, sometimes joined by his older brother, Jim Biel, throughout his childhood, teenage and young adult years.

And now Mike, who was just out of high school when he helped build the current store and garden, has spent the last year rejuvenating the store, which he said had become a bit run-down as his mother’s health and vitality waned in her last years there. It is work that seems to be in his blood. “I enjoy this kind of stuff,” he said.
Vy Biel was actually the third owner of The Country Store and Farm, a place of business that opened up in 1964 in its first location, in the historic Center building that now houses Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie. The mural that graced the south side of the building then depicted old-timers sitting around a pot-bellied stove, with the legend “The Country Store,” painted above it. (That image is now available on T-shirts sold in the store.)
Mike’s improvements to the store include the addition of several brands of apparel, including Patagonia, Levi’s and Red Wing shoes. The store also now features more children’s clothing than before, as well as other things that appeal to youngsters, including a big model train set that graced the store’s windows at Christmas time. The toy department has also expanded, featuring wooden, science and other educational toys.
Vy first had an antique business in the basement of the building, and then bought the Country Store business in 1971. But sometime in 1978 or 1979, her rent for the space went up, and she decided to buy land a little farther south on Vashon Highway and move her store there.
Mike also has big plans for the gardens that surround the store.
Mike said Vy was the general contractor for what is the now familiar and picturesque store and nursery. She was assisted, he said, by local fine and finish carpenters, as well as by himself and his brother, in the build-out of the space. A mail-order catalog business, which Vy added after the

“We’re trying to turn the outside into a more park-like setting, to make it a place where people can hang out and have a picnic,” he said. He’s working hard, he added, to reorganize the perennial nursery, and hopes to add more fruits as you-pick options, along with the blueberries that have long been available there in season.
Food & Drink Another long-term goal for the business, he said, is to create a space for weddings to take place in the gardens. And already, he’s invited the public to use a meeting space he has constructed in the upper level of the store. And in a modern-day twist to his mother’s idea of creating a mail-order business, he’s also now in the process of improving the store’s website to allow additional income to flow in through e-commerce. Pamela Courtney, who works in the store as Mike’s assistant manager, seems to well understand his passion for the place. She too has fond memories of the store, having worked behind the counter there as a teenager. Now in her mid-40s, she recently returned to Vashon after living in Florida for many
years, and said she was happy to come back to the same place where she began her working life so many years before. “It’s actually really cool,� she said. “How many things are the same, and yet how many others are different.�

Fresh from the market Vashon’s Farmers Market is the quintessential community experience. It’s a great place, of course, to buy fresh, organic produce, flowers and wonderful handcrafted items — from caramels to jewelry to carved wooden spoons. There’s also beer and wine, body products and even pet treats. But it’s also a place to revel in the Vashon vibe. Most Farmers Market Saturdays, island musicians play; The smell of fresh-baked pastries wafts through the air, and children happily run around. The market runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday, from April through December. Until November, it’s held at the Village Green in the heart of town; it then moves indoors for the last few weeks, when the crafters hold center stage and holiday gifts can be purchased. Throughout the year, there are special occasions, including a “tomato taste-off,” a celebration of lavender and CiderFest, when island-grown apples steal the show. Navigating Vashon
Though not far from Seattle, Vashon is a rural place with rural sensibilities. That means the two grocery stores close early — Thriftway at 9 p.m. and IGA at 10 p.m. — and there’s no bus service on Sunday. Here are a few other things you might find helpful. Note that the only area code on the island is 206.

t’s been said that Vashon is a haven for artists, and indeed the island boasts art galleries, performance halls and frequent theater and musical shows. But even a drive around the island is a testament to the creativity of our ordinary citizens. Artists collective brings variety to the local art scene BY JULI GOETZ MORSER
W
hen VALISE Gallery opened its doors five years ago, everyone on Vashon took notice. After all, it’s not every day you see a yellow suitcase emerging out of a glass window. And with the gallery first announcing itself as Zamfir’s Pay Day Loan and Pawn shop — the offbeat brainchild of founding member Vic Monchego — the buzz about this quirky business hit hard and it hit fast. And it’s been going strong ever since. VALISE, the acronym for Vashon Artists Linked in Social Engagement, formed overnight in response to the closing of Gallery 070, the gallery’s predecessor, which showed contemporary art found in galleries in Seattle, San Francisco and New York. Saunders saw Gallery 070 as a huge community asset and its closure as an equally big loss. So she took action. “I gathered 10 Vashon artists and proposed we become a collective,” Saunders recalled. “Everyone in the room that night said yes, and we got off to a flying start.” The collective structured itself in a democratic fashion, without a hierarchy. All artists received an equal voice, regardless of their medium or how much they sold. Monthly dues covered the rent, insurance and utilities, with everyone paying the same amount. “The organizing artistic principle behind the gallery was and still is our dedication to presenting work that is daring, unexpected and emergent,” Saunders said. Indeed, over the past 60 shows, the exhibits have run the gamut from contemporary paintings, drawings and sculptures to installations of interactive light by Dan Corsan, Heather Timken’s butoh dancer moving through 50 pounds of bread dough under suspended crystal stemware and tattoo artist Paco Rollins’ tattoo art, relics and tools. The museum-grade show curated by the late Mia McEldowney “Eccentric Visions: Outsider Art from the Collection of MIA Gallery” maxed out the tiny, two-room space and garnered much praise. Saunders likens the collective to a dynamic social club, a group of artists who share ideas and challenge each other to do fresh work.
Arts & Entertainment “I’m an encaustic painter, but what I love about VALISE is that as artists we encourage each other to stretch,” Saunders said. “It’s easy for me to paint trees or landscapes, but I’ve had the chance to do film and installation photo transfers. I’d never have that opportunity in another gallery.”

It seems like everyone is doing something creative on Vashon, and the island is supportive of that. In another place, the lawyer doing weird sculpture would be embarrassed, while here it is encouraged.”
Acting on the tenet of social engagement, VALISE finds ways to reach out to the community. Every May the gallery holds an all-island show, inviting any Vashon resident to submit a piece of art, and it receives up to 200 entries. In another commitment to social engagement, last year VALISE partnered with The DoVE Project, Vashon’s nonprofit dedicated to ending domestic violence. Each member was asked to do a piece about domestic violence. “It was our first foray into that kind of joint venture, and it was very exciting. ... It initiated conversations about topics we don’t feel comfortable talking about,” Saunders said. With such a strong run over the past five years, VALISE is nonetheless

First Friday Vashon’s vibrant arts scene shines particularly bright on the first Friday of every month, when galleries and other businesses open new shows. Many island places — shops, restaurants, banks and even two senior centers — show art and participate in the First Friday Gallery Cruise each month. Many have artist receptions, live music and nibbles on hand as the streets fill with locals and visitors cruising to see art. The fun usually begins at 6 p.m. See The Beachcomber for details. Vashon’s Art Studio Tour started some 25 years ago as a way for the island’s small pottery community to sell its wares. Over the years, the tour has grown into a rich and thriving twice-yearly tradition. These days, as many as 100 artists throw open the doors to their studios, inviting the public to come in and have a look, and to purchase art if they’d like. Visitors can step into a glass-blowing studio and watch a veteran glass-blower at work, a yurt on a small working farm where delicate Ukrainian eggs are painted, a cottage where a potter works at her wheel and a home where a celebrated jeweler sells intricate silver bells. Textiles, candles, pottery, paintings, jewelry, blown glass, tiles, garden art and painted furniture are among the creations Vashon’s prodigious arts community produces. The tour takes place twice a year — in May, the quieter of the two tours, and in December. Both give visitors an opportunity to purchase original artwork and support small-scale, local artists. The tour is also a wonderful way to see the island: Many of the studios are tucked in the woods or perched above the water in intimate, private settings. Each stop along the way is like stepping into another world. This year’s holiday Art Studio Tour will take place the weekends of Dec. 6-7 and 13-14. Spotlight on the opera Perhaps one of the island’s most stand-out artistic efforts is the Vashon Opera, a small opera company that turns out shows that rival big-city productions. It’s rare that a place the size of Vashon would boast its own opera company. But after a pair of professional opera singers landed on the island, Vashon Opera was born. Since its inception, the company has drawn sellout crowds and considerable praise. Since founding the company in 2009, Jennifer and Andy Krikawa have produced 11 full-scale operas, including “La Boheme,� “Madama Butterfly� and “The Tender Land.� The Krikawas have sung principal roles in each opera, and they’ve been joined on stage by up-and-coming singers and well-known Northwest performers. Season six of the Vashon Opera opens this fall with “Don Giovanni� a widely performed Mozart work that is considered by some to be the greatest opera ever written. It will feature a chorus of 26 Vashon performers. Sung in Italian with English supertitles, it will play Sept. 12 and 14 at the newly built theater at Vashon High School. In the spring, the company will put on “Albert Herring,� a British comedic opera written by Benjamin Britten. The modern opera highlights the misadventures of a lonely shop-boy in a small English village. It will play May 15 and 17, 2015, at Bethel Church. Michael Sage Photo

Drama Dock: Great community theater Drama Dock, now in its 38th year, is an island institution — a community theater company that showcases Vashon’s remarkable theatrical talent. Every year, the organization presents a full season of plays and musicals. Some of their recently performed shows include Garsan Kanin’s “Born Yesterday,� Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods� and a youth production of “Cats� (pictured at right). This summer, the small but ambitious group will produce “Gypsy,� a show by Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents. It’s a show that some reviewers have called the greatest American musical. Performances will be July 11 to 13 and 17 to 20 at the new Vashon High School theater.

Food, art and shopping at historical Center Located less than two miles south of Vashon town, the intersection known as Center — at Vashon Highway and Cemetery Road — was once Vashon’s business hub. Today Center retains its historical feel thanks to the maintenance of several historical buildings there, which are now home to some beloved, locally owned businesses.

Just south of the intersection, the nonprofit Vashon Allied Arts is located inside a 100-year-old structure built by the Odd Fellows. Now called The Blue Heron Arts Center, it holds an art gallery and a theater that hosts concerts and events throughout the year. See www.vashonalliedarts.org.
Kitty corner from The Blue Heron is another hub of activity on Vashon. The Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie is a favorite place to get a cup of coffee, grab a bite to eat and relax on the front porch. The building, also over 100 years old, was an early home of the coffee company that eventually became Seattle’s Best Coffee. Beans are still roasted there, and a small museum features coffee antiques. In back of the Roasterie, Zuzu’s Ice Cream serves up frozen delights during the warmer months. Also in the Roasterie building is the Minglement, an organic health food store established in 1979. Shoppers should head to the back of the Minglement, where Bookman West offers an impressive collection of rare, collectible and signed books, and Common Thread has fabric art and accessories by a slate of island artists.

Vashon’s a great place to venture out with a four-legged friend. There are several parks and beaches where a dog can be off-leash if it’s under voice command. KVI Beach and Point Robinson are favorite spots for well-behaved dogs to romp. (See pages 16-18.) Another favorite spot is Island Center Forest, a 400-acre expanse of trails where dogs are allowed. Also consider the long trails of Dockton Forest. (See page 22.) But dogs need to share the trail with horses, cyclists and joggers, so aggressive and overly friendly dogs need to be leashed. Sheepdog trials are a classic The Vashon Sheepdog Classic has become a celebrated island event that now attracts thousands of spectators. At the multi-day competition, dogs and dog handlers from around the country demonstrate sheepherding at an idyllic setting, the rolling meadows of Misty Isle Farms. The most well-attended herding event on the West Coast, the sheepdog classic is a nationals-qualifying event for the U.S. Border Collie Handlers Association. Maggi McClure, an islander and professional dog trainer, started the event in 2010. Slated to occur this year Aug. 22 to 25, the competition is sure to draw spectators to sit on blankets or chairs, watching the herding action from the natural amphitheater created by Misty Isle’s terrain. The weekend also features plenty of food, crafts and art, a wine and beer garden and raffles. Event proceeds go to support local nonprofits.

Fun for kids In the age of endless electronic entertainment and jam-packed schedules, Vashon is a place to unplug and take in life’s simpler pleasures. With its beaches, woods and parks, Vashon is the perfect playground for kids of all ages.
Take a dip The Vashon Pool will open for the season on June 14 and continue through Labor Day weekend. Throughout the summer, the pool will offer early morning and noontime lap swims, open swims every afternoon and evening family swims and swimming lessons. A popular place, the pool has a curlicue slide, diving board and plenty of pool toys. Daily admission is $6 general admission and $3 for seniors and children age 3 and younger. Individual and group lessons and private pool rentals are available, too. Call pool manager Scott Bonney at 240-7721 for more information. The pool is located at 9600 S.W. 204th St. next to the high school. It is ADA accessible. Vashon’s small, one-screen theater offers a weekly lineup of films — blockbuster movies and more artsy flicks — for both adults and children. It usually has one or two screenings per day. The theater is a local treasure. Several community events are held there each year, and it regularly screens films or holds events as fundraisers for local nonprofits. In 2012, theater owners thought they may have to close their doors because they couldn’t afford a new digital projection system required to screen new movies. Go for a nature walk Choose one of Vashon’s less strenuous hiking trails to take little ones to explore the outdoors. Consider visiting Island Center Forest via that trailhead on 188th Street, where it’s just a short walk to Mukai Pond. Fisher Pond is also fun spot for families, and the trail there is wide and flat. A berry good time Strawberry Festival has something for everyone The best party on Vashon comes each July, when the Chamber of Commerce puts on the Strawberry Festival. More than 30,000 people attend the three-day affair — a classic, community-styled celebration, Festival replete with parades, booths, a beer garden and carnival rides. Vashon’s festival is homegrown — it boasts performances by island musicians, locally made arts and crafts and a funky, rural vibe. The festival this year will be held July 18 to 20, when the main road through town will be given over to booths filled with crafts, food and information. The highlight will be the Grand Parade, which takes place Saturday at 11 a.m. The Classic Car Parade, also a favorite, will be Sunday at noon. The festival goes back many years. According to the chamber, it began in 1909, when strawberries were Vashon’s

main export. Highlights this year will include favorites from years past — street dances on Friday and Saturday night, the Bill Burby Fun Run, a spot for local artists’ wares and music by local performers at numerous outdoor venues. There will also be shuttle service from both the north-end and south-end ferry docks for those who want to leave their car behind. A celebration for every season Vashon seems to have a celebration to mark every season and holiday — community-wide affairs that showcase the island’s creativity and fun-loving spirit. What might you want to experience? Consider these home-grown highlights. Spring Fling, when the Easter Bunny makes an appearance, is a delightful, kid-friendly event. It takes place the Saturday before Easter and includes an egg hunt, crafts and prizes for kids in Ober Park. A celebration of water, wind and sky, Kite Day draws islanders and guests to the beach for the May event at Point Robinson. The day includes food and music, kites available to purchase and tours of the lighthouse. Come summertime, Concerts in the Park draw crowds to Ober Park for free live music. Watch The Beachcomber for dates. The Low Tide Celebration, a chance to see sea life during one of the lowest
tides of the year, will be June 14. See page 18 for more information. The Fourth of July is a true community affair on Vashon. An impressive fireworks show generously sponsored by locals each year draws hundreds to the shores of Quartermaster Harbor. CiderFest celebrates the bounty of the fall harvest with apple cider, cider pressing and treats at the Farmers Market on Oct. 11. It traditionally ends with an old-fashioned barn dance in the evening. Halloween is a particularly spirited time on Vashon, when the town core closes to cars and both kids and adults — dressed in creative and sometimes extravagant costumes — hit the streets. Merchants hand out candy and there’s a haunted house or two to explore. Before the big day, many islanders carve pumpkins with intricate designs and put them on display at the Vashon Island Coffee

Vashon’s Native heritage

ative people have lived on Vashon and Maury islands for thousands of years, long ago forming multiple villages around the island and living off the area’s abundant natural resources. Before Euro-Americans arrived in Washington, there were approximately 650 Native people living on VashonMaury Island who identified themselves as the Sqababsh in the Twulushootseed language of the Puyallup tribe, or the S’Homamish in the later Chinook (chinuk wawa) trade language. The estimated 650 Sqababsh lived in six permanent village sites and used numerous temporary resource gathering sites all over the island. The permanent villages

Disputes over the treaty, however, led to the Puget Sound Indian War, and the Sqababsh were interned at Fox Island. The internment began in December 1855 and was a grim experience. Exposed to the Puget Sound winter with no shelter and without their traditional stores of food, the interned Natives faced a steady physical and cultural deterioration. Today, Vashon-Maury Island is considered part of the traditional territory of the Puyallup people who call themselves S’Puyalupubsh, “a people who are generous and welcoming to all people (friends and strangers) who enter our lands.” The island is also home to a number of Native people from other groups and other parts of the U.S. and Canada. It is also the location of aqua-cultural lands owned by the Muckelshoot Tribe. In the 2010 Census, there were 220 Vashon residents who identified as Native American. Of these, seven identified as being Puget Sound Salish, the original Native people of the Salish Sea. The other 213 Native people identify as being from 26 other tribes. The Native people of Vashon are still an
Native people spotlighted at museum The Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum, housed in a historical Lutheran church west of the main intersection, is small but jam-packed. Here, one can see artifacts and photographs of the island’s earliest settlers. The stuff of island life — herring rakes, tarnished school bells, a shaving kit from 1880 — lines walls and sits in cases. Nike missiles were sited on the island, and a nose cone can be found here along with toy rockets made on the island. Famous islanders — writer Betty MacDonald, for instance — are honored. This summer the museum, managed by a group of hard-working volunteers, will showcase a new exhibit on the Sqababsh people, a band of the Puyallup who lived

The house is much the same as when his widowed mother raised her family after the fire that claimed her husband’s life and destroyed the family home at Tahlequah. A legendary bicycle The bike in the tree continues to draw curious visitors Tales abound about how a red bicycle came to be lodged in a Vashon tree a dozen feet off the ground. But a longtime island family has laid a solid claim to the bike. The bicycle belonged to Don Puz, who left it in the woods in 1954, when he was 8. Don received the bicycle after a tragedy struck his family: A fast-burning blaze swept through his Dockton home one evening, when everyone in this family of seven was gone but Don’s father, Anthony Puz. His father perished in the blaze. Islanders, moved by the tragedy, responded in tender Vashon style, offering up clothes, furniture, financial support and a new bike for Don. But the bicycle wasn’t his favorite. So one day, when he and his friends were playing in the woods, Don left his bike behind. He never returned to fetch it, and the rest is history. The bicycle in the tree has become a legend on Vashon, and many travel to the island simply to take in the curious site.

How to get there: To find the bicycle in the tree, park in the parking lot of Sound Food, which is south of town on Vashon Highway. Follow a well-worn trail on the northeastern edge of the property, and the tree will be on the left.
